The New Orleans Saints announced they’ve agreed to terms with veteran DB Ugo Amadi on a one-year contract for the 2025 season.

Amadi finished his 2024 campaign with 527 total defensive snaps (323 in coverage, 179 against the run and 25 in pass rush), recording 56 solo tackles (5 assists), 25 stops, 4 pass breakups, 3 total pressures, 2 sacks and 1 pass batted at the line of scrimmage, according to Pro Football Focus.

The 27-year-old has been a versatile depth piece for New Orleans since joining the team during the 2023 offseason, logging 483 snaps in the slot, 174 on special teams, 51 in the box, 45 on the line, and 31 out wide. Despite standing at just 5’9” and 201 pounds, Amadi plays with a chip on his shoulder and isn’t afraid to get physical with larger opponents. Since entering the league as a fourth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2019 NFL Draft, he’s missed just 27 tackles on 2,047 defensive snaps.

Miguez: Why the Saints should not trade up for Cam Ward

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

New Orleans is in no position to move up from 9 to 1.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results, so with that being said...

In 1999, the New Orleans Saints' front office traded their first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh round picks in that draft as well as the first and third rounders in the 2000 NFL Draft to move up to five and select Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams out of Texas.

Eight premium picks for one player that stayed in New Orleans for just three years before going to Miami, getting into some trouble and for the most part, finishing off a rather underwhelming career.

Sure, Williams had a few really strong seasons, including his 1853 yards in 2002, but he never lived up to those eight draft picks.

Fast forward 25 years and there have been rumors that the Saints are looking to do something similar.

Now, this time may not include so many picks, but the story is almost the same: trade up to the first overall pick to draft Cam Ward, a quarterback that flourished at Miami and was a finalist for the award Williams won in 1999.

Cam Ward pic.twitter.com/YG9OkH3oKV

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 24, 2025

Ward is regarded by many as the top prospect in this draft class after throwing for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns while leading the Miami Hurricanes to a 10-3 season. He won the Manning Award and the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback.

However, in my opinion, you just can't risk your future for a maybe, and you surely can't do it when you have more holes to fill than just a quarterback.

There is no doubt in my mind that Cam Ward has the potential to be a really good quarterback in this league (I think he's currently overrated, but that's just me). However, the Saints are not in a position of luxury where a) they only have to fill a single need at quarterback and b) truly have the draft capital to be sending the Tennessee Titans 2-3 years of premium picks to be moving that far.

Not to mention, as good as people think Ward may be, he's the fourth or fifth QB taken in a typical draft. He is benefitting from an extraordinarily weak quarterback class.

With saying all of this, do I think the Saints actually move up to one and do this? No, I don't. It just isn't Mickey Loomis's style. But it needs to be said so that the rumor train can slow down just a little bit on social media.

I'm sorry Who Dat Nation, but Cam Ward will not be your quarterback in 2025.

Saints have a busy day at Texas’ Pro Day

Syndication: Austin American-Statesman

Ricardo B. Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

With links among the coaching staff, interest was expected.

The closer the NFL Draft gets, the more pro days conclude around the country. Teams pick and choose members of their coaching staff/front office to send to select pro days. It is always interesting to see how many or who gets sent to watch the prospects, and when a team sends a massive contingent of staff members, it is incredibly noteworthy. A couple of days ago, the New Orleans Saints did just this at Miami’s Pro Day but left after the events concluded. Their next destination was in Austin for Texas’ Pro Day, and this one felt a bit more important than any other stop the Saints have had so far.

Throughout the pro day, the Saints were a part of many conversations surrounding the event. It makes sense with the Texas connections on the Saints coaching staff, but there seemed to be a real interest in Quinn Ewers. The young quarterback had a great pro day and made an impression on everyone present. It wwas later revealed that the Saints had some real interest in Ewers, and his draft stock could be on the rise, per Jeff Howe.

The Saints have shown a lot of interest in Ewers. He could be a second-day pick, according to the teams I’ve heard from. https://t.co/DEoRV0r3sa

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) March 25, 2025

Quarterback is an important conversation with the Saints’ future, and if there is some worry with the current room, drafting one in April makes too much sense. Ewers could be one of those QB prospects the Saints really like, and the contingency sent to the pro day could hint towards that. Now, it is important to note, Texas has so much talent being sent to the draft, and the Saints could be interested in a number of prospects. CB/S Jahdae Barron, DT Alfred Collins, OT/G Kelvin Banks Jr., WR Matthew Golden, S Andrew Mukuba, RB Jaydon Blue, and of course QB Quinn Ewers are just some of the players that could be in play at the Saints’ selections. The team’s interest was further emphasized with New Orleans hosting a dinner the night before the pro day with some of the Texas prospects, per Nick Underhill.

The Saints hosted a dinner last night with several Texas draft prospects, including CB Jahdae Barron, WR Matthew Golden, DT Vernon Broughton, QB Quinn Ewers, among others, according to sources. pic.twitter.com/ebJpmGtP2B

— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) March 25, 2025

It is hard for prospects to make a massive difference on the field at pro days, but in these meetings/dinners, that can be where the players raise their stock and cause teams to fall in love with them. In the context of this dinner between Saints brass and Longhorn prospects, one player needs to be mentioned, and that is Jahdae Barron. Barron is very much in play at pick 9. He can be a perfect outside cornerback in Staley’s primary zone scheme, and has flexibility to be a star nickel corner. Also, the Saints’ new passing game coordinator, Terry Joseph, was Texas’ DBs coach last season. Barron may not be the current consensus pick at 9, but the closer we get to the draft, this may change.

It is always hard to find the direction a team may go in, and there is no perfect way to do it, but pro days can be helpful in revealing the thought process of certain teams. With the New Orleans Saints, the Texas Pro Day may have just revealed what the team could do in the NFL Draft.

The latest on the Saints salary cap situation

Las Vegas Raiders v New Orleans Saints

Photo by Derick E. Hingle/Getty Images

New Orleans makes some space to make moves.

The New Orleans Saints' free agency has been filled with contract restructures, pay cuts, signings, bringing back players, and trades. Many expected a more active year than last offseason, but what the Saints did so far has exceeded expectations. As New Orleans always does, each contract they gave out had first years with low base salaries and void years attached. Currently, before the Dillon Radunz contract details come out, the Saints’ cap space is approximate $31 million, per Kat Terrell.

Saints now have about $31 million in cap space with all contracts in except Dillon Radunz

Some cap numbers:

Justin Reid: $3.8 million
Brandin Cooks: $3.2 million
Isaac Yiadom: $2 million
Landon Young: $1.3 million
Ugo Amadi: $1.1 million
Will Clapp: $1.2 million

— Katherine Terrell (@Kat_Terrell) March 26, 2025

The Saints have filled many of their pressing needs since the beginning of free agency, and going into the draft, it is doubtful the team will make any significant additions to the team. With compensatory picks in mind, signing a player to a larger contract would wipe out the projected 4th round selection the Saints would get from Paulson Adebo leaving in free agency. Having around $30 million in cap space may hint at more moves being made, but the team can easily roll over the money into next years’ cap space. Still, more work needs to be done, and if all their needs cannot be fixed through the NFL Draft, New Orleans could make more additions.

— Tulane Football (@GreenWaveFB) March 25, 2025

The Saints has multiple scouts as well as Ted Rath, their new director of sports science for the team in attendance.

Here is a list of the 21 players that participated:

  • WR Mario Williams
  • WR Dontae Fleming
  • WR Yulkeith Brown
  • TE Reggie Brown
  • OL Vincent Murphy
  • OL Josh Remetich
  • DL Terrell Allen
  • DL Patrick Jenkins
  • DL Adin Huntington
  • DL Javon Carter
  • DL Eric Hicks
  • DB Jalen Geiger
  • DB Caleb Ransaw
  • DB Micah Robinson
  • DB Johnathan Edwards
  • LS Ethan Hudak

Edge defender Adin Huntington raised some eyebrows

Adin Huntington, an edge defender from Stafford, VA., had a good day. All while standing 6’1’’ and weighing 281 pounds, he had a 4.64 40-yard dash, 30 bench press reps, a 38-inch vertical jump, and a 10ft 6in broad jump.

Last season, Huntington had 30 total tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. He was also named to the AAC all-conference third team.

Wide receiver Yulkeith Brown impressed

Tulane’s Yulkeith Brown, a wide receiver from Miami, FL, also stood out, with a 40-yard dash of 4.41 and a 9ft. 7in broad jump. He is 5’10” and weighs 167 pounds.

In 2024, Brown had 35 receptions for 470 yards and four touchdowns. He also had eight rushing attempts for 39 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, he was an honorable mention for the AAC all-conference team.

“Yulkeith was sort of an unsung hero as we went through the year last year.” Tulane coach Jon Sumrall said in a press conference at the end of the day.

— John Burrows (@BurrowsReport) March 25, 2025

Johnathan Edwards managed to raise his stock

Johnathan Edwards, who stands 6’1’’ and weighs 200 pounds, is another player that managed to raise his draft stock with an impressive pro day. He had an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.39 (tied for fastest of the day), a broad jump of 10ft 4in, a vertical jump of 38.5, a 4.41 shuttle run, and 13 bench press reps.

The St. Louis, MN native had 24 total tackles in last season, along with one tackle for a loss and one pass defended.

“You can’t teach his size and speed; you either have that or you don’t,” Jon Sumrall said. “When we got him, it was like getting a ball of clay.”

Saints eyeing Ashton Jeanty at Boise State Pro Day

New Orleans could potentially add to their running back room early.

New Orleans Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas was in attendance for Boise State’s pro day, per Luke Johnson.

Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas is at Boise State’s pro day today, for reasons y’all can probably guess.

— Luke Johnson (@ByLukeJohnson) March 26, 2025

Thomas was in attendance to spectate running back Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty had a monster year in 2024, rushing for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns, finishing second in Heisman voting.

While no player is a bona fide star right out of college, Jeanty is as close as you can get. His mass production in college and game IQ set the potential top 10 pick in the same category as Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants first-round picks Bijan Robinson and Saquan Barkely, both players rated highly out of college and contributed right away.

The Heisman runner-up is likely a top 10 NFL Draft pick, often being mocked to the Las Vegas Raiders (6th overall pick), Chicago Bears (10th overall pick), and New Orleans Saints (9th overall pick). While the Saints aren't just a running back away from being competitive, drafting Jeanty would be a crucial part of the team’s future, helping whoever their future quarterback may be.

Vrbo Fiesta Bowl - Penn State v Boise State

New Orleans offense will likely try to replicate the success new head coach Kellen Moore saw with the Philadelphia Eagles and focus on their running backs. A run game consisting of a Pro Bowl veteran in Alvin Kamara and the fresh legs of Ashton Jeanty would be too much for opposing defenses to handle. The Saints aren’t strangers to this form of offense, with the iconic “Boom and Zoom” era centered around Kamara and Mark Ingram.

The Saints' coaching staff has been busy this week with Pro Days and have scouted a range of schools with first-round players. While it isn't a certainty, sending Thomas to spectate Jeanty’s performance at his Pro Day is a tip that New Orleans is interested in adding the star running back to their locker room with the ninth pick.

Saints position group season review: Defensive Line

New Orleans Saints v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

How did the Saints pass rushers and run defenders stack up in 2024?

The New Orleans Saints defense ranked 30th in the NFL last season in yards allowed and 19th in scoring. The defensive line only had three players get more than 5 sacks, and none who got over 7.5, which is why the position group is seen by many as the Saints biggest need going into the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Saints had very little turn over on the defensive line this offseason, as Chase Young was re-signed to a three-year contract, and Cam Jordan announced that he is coming back for another year. On top of these moves, defensive tackles Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders both survived being cap casualties and remain under contract for one more year. The most notable departure was former first round pick Payton Turner, who signed with Dallas Cowboys after four injury riddled seasons in New Orleans.

Bryan Bresee led the team with 7.5 sacks, nearly doubling his output in his rookie season. His development was a bright spot for the Saints in 2024, and if he can take another step forward in 2025, he may rise to become a Pro Bowl caliber player who can anchor the middle of the Saints defensive line for the foreseeable future.

Carl Granderson followed up his 8.5 sack season in 2023 with just 5.5 in 2024, but did lead the team in TFLs with 9, and led all defensive linemen with 61 total tackles. Granderson is still a solid piece who is relatively young, and I expect his sack numbers to improve this year.

Yet another 4th down stop thanks to Bryan Bresee

FOX pic.twitter.com/iXztItFeyo

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) September 22, 2024

During the offseason, the Saints traded for DT Davon Godchaux from the New England Patriots. Godchaux has not missed a game over the last four years and is a very capable run defender who should fit nicely into the Saints rotation. In the draft, the Saints have many options if they elect to go defensive line early. The high-end guys like Abdul Carter and Mason Graham will probably be out of reach at #9, but the Saints could look to take a player like edge rushers Jalon Walker or Mykel Williams out of Georgia at 9, or trade back for a player like Walter Nolan. Walker and Williams both have tremendous upside given their athleticism, while Nolan is probably the product with the higher floor but lower ceiling. In the later rounds, don’t be surprised if they chose a player such as Oregon’s Jordan Burch or Michigan’s Josaiah Stewart on day 2.

Do you think the Saints should take a defensive lineman with their first pick in the draft or do you think they should try and find a sleeper in the later rounds?

James Pearce Jr.

Pearce Jr. is one of the top edge rushers in the 2025 draft. His performance last season was his best yet. According to ESPN, he gathered 38 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. Pearce Jr. was also named first team All-SEC in 2024. He is tied for tenth in school history with former volunteer Darrell Taylor, with 19.5 career sacks.

Will Brooks

A redshirt senior, Safety Will Brooks has been with the Tennessee Volunteers since 2020. And like Pearce Jr., 2024 was the best season of his career. He gathered 59 total tackles last season, along with five passes defended, four interceptions (one of which he returned for six), and one forced fumble, according to ESPN.

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) March 24, 2025

The 26-year-old from Becker, MN graduated from Becker High School where he played basketball, football, and threw shot put and discus on the track and field team. He was a two-year starter at both the offensive tackle and defensive end positions which saw the team go 25–1, winning back-to-back state championships.

He attended North Dakota State, playing in 33 games with 32 starts at left tackle in his five seasons with the Bison where he was a member of four Missouri Valley Football Conference championship teams and three NCAA Division I football national championship teams.

Radunz was selected by the Titans in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft State. In his four years in Tennessee, Radunz has played in 54 games with 31 starts at both the guard and tackle positions. Last season, he started and played at the right guard position all year, missing 2 games due to a rib injury.

— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) March 29, 2025

Turner played four seasons with the Aggies, totaling 10 sacks and 24 TFLs in 43 games. The 6-foot-3 defensive lineman had his best season as a junior, sacking the quarterback 6 times and forcing 2 fumbles.

Turner offers position flexibility. The 290-pound defensive lineman played defensive end before transitioning to defensive tackle. Turner’s combination of speed and power allows him to be a liable pass rusher from the inside, while his size helps him maintain ball carriers.

The Saints will switch to a 3-4 defense after the hiring of defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. With the shift, they'll look to add more size and pass rush to their line. The versatility of Turner makes him a possible target to take over in the Saints system.

Turner is projected to be a third to fourth-round pick. With New Orleans controlling two third-round picks and two fourth-round picks, they’ll have plenty of resources to select the Texas A&M lineman if available.

He was the first player at tight end to surpass both 100 receptions and 1,000 yards in program history. In 2024, Taylor’s 546 yards and 2 touchdowns set a single-season reception record at the tight end position for LSU.

Mason comes from some impressive football pedigree as the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame DE Jason Taylor and the nephew of Pro Fall of Fame LB Zach Thomas.

LSU OL Will Campbell visits with the Saints

2024 LSU Archive

Photo by Gus Stark/LSU/University Images via Getty Images

Could New Orleans target the offensive lineman if he drops?

The New Orleans Saints have nearly perfect flexibility going into the NFL Draft, and at pick 9, the team is not forced to select a certain position. In 2024, offensive tackle had to be their selection in the first because of how big of a need it was. Yes, Brock Bowers may have been the one exception, but if the Saints did get Bowers, imagine the offensive line struggles the team would have gone through. With this flexibility, New Orleans must do as much homework on the top prospects in the draft as possible because anything could happen. One of these prospects is LSU offensive lineman Will Campbell, who visited with the Saints Saturday, per Nick Underhill.

LSU OL Will Campbell visited the Saints today, according to sources. The Louisiana native is expected to be a top-10 pick in next month's draft. pic.twitter.com/8z3RpFddaM

— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) March 30, 2025

Will Campbell, in particular his arm length, has been of the main talking points throughout the draft season. Teams may be worried about his ability to play tackle in the NFL due to his arm length, but other teams may overlook that because of how talented Campbell is. Still, this may cause a drop for him in the first round, and this is where the Saints can pounce.

Offensive line is not the biggest need for the Saints, but as head coach Kellen Moore knows, a dominate offensive line can make life in the NFL easier. The Saints’ O-Line is not bad, but with no long-term answer at LG, and the fifth-year option deadline of Trevor Penning coming up, offensive line prospects should still be considered at every selection. If Campbell is available at 9, the New Orleans Saints need to consider drafting him.

Last season was his first with the Green Wave. Previously, he spent time at Louisiana-Monroe during 2023 and spent the 2020-2022 seasons at Kent State.

Primarily lining up on the edge in 2024, he had 30 total tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles, per ESPN. He was also named to the AAC all-conference third team. In his college career, he had 137 total tackles, 15.5 sacks, and five passes defended.

Under former New Orleans Saints HC and current Chicago Bears DC Dennis Allen, it was rare we’d know who the QB2 behind Derek Carr would be until game day. Amidst Carr’s absence in 2024, there was even uncertainty over the starter between Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for a stretch of the season, with decisions often being made after the last practice of the week—something that didn’t sit well with the fan base. However, new head coach Kellen Moore intends to redefine the backup quarterback role in New Orleans.

During the NFL’s annual head coach meetings, Moore was asked whether he plans to have a second-string signal caller set in stone before the season opener. He responded that in nearly every scenario, a team should identify the quarterback they feel most comfortable with taking over if something happens to the starter. While he isn’t opposed to a training camp competition, he pointed to the minimal practice reps during the season as the primary reason it’s crucial to establish a clear reserve early.

Moore also spoke briefly on 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler, noting that he was pleased with what he saw on tape from the former five-star recruit. That said, he acknowledged the challenging circumstances the rookie was thrown into amid an injury-riddled season for the black and gold.

The Saints still have 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener and veteran journeyman Ben DiNucci under contract for the upcoming season, while they’ve also met with the following quarterback prospects from the 2025 NFL Draft class:

Arguably one of the top options for the Saints

The New Orleans Saints have a multitude of options at pick 9 in the NFL Draft. Almost every position can be upgraded on the roster, but the Saints should fix their offensive and defensive lines first if they want any success in 2025 and beyond. This is something head coach Kellen Moore has stated multiple times, and there are some great options to improve the lines. One of these prospects is Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham, who is visiting with the Saints this week, per Jeremy Fowler.

Graham is the top defensive tackle in the 2025 class, and if he is somehow available at pick 9, there is no doubt he should be the selection. The issue is him getting there, which is unlikely. Almost every team in the top 10 could select Mason Graham, and if the Saints want him, a trade up may need to happen. Although, anything can happen in the draft, and there is still a chance Graham gets to 9, so bringing him in for a visit is a good idea. If the Saints do end up trading up from 9, which is not out of the question, Graham could be a prime-time target for New Orleans.

New Orleans projected to draft the cornerback out of Michigan with the ninth pick

ESPN’s draft day predictor is up and according to their simulation, Will Johnson is the expected pick for the New Orleans Saints at the ninth spot.

The Michigan cornerback is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL Draft. Though, Johnson considers himself to be a cut above the rest.

“A lot of respect to him (Travis Hunter); he won the Heisman; he’s done a lot of great things, but I know I’m the best cornerback in the draft.” Will Johnson said on PFT Live at the scouting combine.

Throughout his college career, he has received numerous honors, including being named defensive MVP of the 2024 CFP National Championship game, as well as second-team All-American and second-team All-Big 10.

Johnson has appeared in all 32 career games for the Wolverines, recording 68 total tackles and nine interceptions. He has not allowed a touchdown since the 2022 season, when he allowed two.

However, with him also comes an injury concern. Johnson’s 2024 season was cut short due to turf toe, and he was only able to play in six games. Furthermore, he had to miss Michigan's pro day due to a hamstring injury.
