This Saints quarterback is already hard at work training for 2025

@SpencerRattler @Saints putting in some great work on Wednesday thank you Banner sports medicine for the use of your facility we really appreciate it!! @quarterbackmag pic.twitter.com/tgxvM4s9pG

— Mike Giovando (@Elev8QBacademy) February 20, 2025

Spencer Rattler is back at home in Scottsdale, Ariz. training with Mike Giovando, a personal quarterbacks coach with the Elev8 Quarterback Academy. He was joined by University of Washington quarterback Will Rogers at the Banner Sports Medicine High Performance Center for a day’s work.

Giovando shared a few video clips of the New Orleans Saints quarterback staying sharp as the offseason begins, demonstrating a mixture of footwork drills and throwing sessions.

One thing that was noteworthy is most of the throws were deep outbreaking routes that showcased Rattler’s arm strength.

With new coach Kellen Moore coming to town and Derek Carr’s future unknown, this is an important offseason for Rattler. The young player may have a chance to compete for a starting spot going into his second year.

Even if the Saints cut Carr, it’s unlikely they just gift the reins to Rattler. As much potential as he showed, he still failed to win a game in his starts as a rookie. He could be competing with another mid-round rookie quarterback, or possibly a veteran who would likely be a bridge quarterback.

It’s not as if Rattler was going to spend the offseason on the couch regardless, but the jump from Year 1 to Year 2 is crucial for Rattler.

Ashton Jeanty and Saints would be a perfect pair, per this draft expert

If you ask the Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski, the New Orleans Saints and Ashton Jeanty are candidates for a perfect marriage. Jeanty and the Saints have been connected because of Kellen Moore’s Boise State ties, but Sobleski stayed away from that low-hanging fruit to explain why Jeanty could fit the Saints so well.

Taliese Fuaga and Trevor Penning impacted Sobleski’s decision as well. He sees a world where putting Jeanty behind “two young, run-blocking tone-setters at offensive tackle” could be turn Jeanty into the “focal point” for the Saints offense for the future.

Sobleski highlighted Alvin Kamara’s injury history as a reason the Saints may need to add Jeanty. Kamara hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year. Drafting Jeanty would give you the best second option you’ve had since Kamara and Mark Ingram II’s first stint in New Orleans. If the Saints don’t touch Kamara’s contract again, he’ll be set up for retirement at the same time Jeanty is entering the third year of his rookie deal.

Sobleski does admit projecting where Jeanty will be drafted is difficult due to the unsettled nature of positional value. Teams are running the football more, and Moore’s own success with Saquon Barkley will likely keep that trend going. The only thing that would impact is how selecting a running back at ninth overall is perceived. Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs are two first-round running backs who have worked out very well for their teams, and Jeanty just might be better than both of them.

Brandon Staley's former All-Pro cornerback celebrates Saints' latest staff hire

my guy! https://t.co/enzHTzfHxS

— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) February 21, 2025

Miami Dolphins cornerback, Jalen Ramsey, took to social media to celebrate the New Orleans Saints hiring Brandon Staley as their defensive coordinator.

Ramsey and Staley crossed paths with the Los Angeles Rams. The cornerback was traded to the Rams in 2019, and Staley became the defensive coordinator the following year

Though the player and coach only spent one season together, they left a lasting impact on each other. Staley highlighted Ramsey as being “one of the biggest reasons” he got his first head coaching job. Staley also added that Ramsey “means so much to me.”

After the season, Ramsey called Staley “the best defensive coordinator that I’ve had for sure in the NFL.”

That praise never tapered off either. Staley was a candidate to be the Dolphins defensive coordinator just last year, and Ramsey recalled working with Staley as, “a good experience.”

Ramsey secured his second first-team All-Pro during that 2020 season, so it makes sense why he’d vouch for Staley. Ramsey has made first-team All-Pro three times with three different coordinators, though. Only Staley received such high praise. That should speak volumes.

Daniel Jeremiah says Saints are one of the best fits for top 2025 draft QB

The New Orleans Saints are in an intriguing position this offseason, as despite the salary cap being higher than anticipated, they remain in a tough spot regarding their money situation. The largest contract on the team in 2025 is quarterback Derek Carr, who is going to end up having a $51,458,000 cap hit.

With the hiring of new head coach Kellen Moore, maybe the Saints choose to keep Carr, or maybe they don’t and would rather look to pair Moore with a signal-caller of his own choice. One of the options would be drafting a quarterback, via trade-up or otherwise, and according to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, the Saints may be a quality fit for top prospect Shedeur Sanders.

“I think he makes more sense when you look at — the Saints make sense to me; the Raiders make sense to me. More so about fit than anything else when it comes to those guys,” Jeremiah said during a conference call this week.

He made it clear as well that in the event of a potential Matthew Stafford trade, the New York Giants would be a team to consider, which would take them out of the running for Sanders, leaving other options to fill in.

As many of us know by now, the Saints have not selected a first-round quarterback since Archie Manning decades ago, and have rather chosen to sign them or draft them later, focusing on trenches and other positions to fill out the roster instead. However, with things shaken up among the coaching staff and roster, maybe they finally shake that trend and select their guy to build around for years to come.

Jeremiah compared Sanders to other top quarterback prospect Cam Ward in the same discussion: “I like Shedeur. I think Shedeur is — when you look at the things he does really well, the accuracy, anticipation, toughness, he just keeps getting up after taking a beating, but some of the other things that Cam has, he doesn’t have, which is just a little bit more twitch in his body. He has a more live arm.”

It will be intriguing to see how things pan out in this first Kellen Moore draft class, as the Saints look to build up a platform for him to work from.

Wrestlemania 42 will take place in the home of the Saints in 2026

The city of New Orleans has another major event lined up. After hosting Super Bowl LIX, the city will be the home of Wrestlemania 42 in 2026. It is the biggest event in all of pro wrestling and it’s making it’s return to the home of the New Orleans Saints.

The announcement was made by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the latest episode of WWE Friday Night Smackdown. It was an appropriate moment to make the announcement as Smackdown was live from the Smoothie King Center, home of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Wrestlemania 42 will take place next door at the Caesars Superdome.

It’s the third time New Orleans has hosted The Grandest Stage of Them All. The first time was in 2014 and then again in 2018. In the eight years since the last time New Orleans hosted this event, Wrestlemania has increased from one night to a two-night event. It is tentatively scheduled for April 11-12, 2026, so that won’t conflict with the Saints’ 2026 season.

This year’s Wrestlemania will take place in Las Vegas. There will also be three weekly events and multiple fan events in Las Vegas during Wrestlemania week. New Orleans can expect a similar experience next year.

New Orleans is used to hosting large events, and if anyone needed any proof, they can look back to just two weeks ago when the city put on a great week of Super Bowl activities.

Former Saints first round draft pick released by the Cincinnati Bengals

We have released DT Sheldon Rankins.

Read more → https://t.co/XSGBzDMZmm

— Cincinnati Bengals (@Bengals) February 21, 2025

There have been quite a few moving parts with former New Orleans Saints players throughout the past few offseasons, with some working out and some not so much. Another player has been added to the list of free agents, as former Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins was released by the Cincinnati Bengals, the team announced.

Rankins left the Saints back in the 2021 offseason signing a two-year deal with the New York Jets, which he played out. He would then sign with the Houston Texans for 2023, and then the Cincinnati Bengals on a two-year deal for 2024 and 2025. Unfortunately, he dealt with viral meningitis for the latter half of the season and would miss all but seven games due to it.

In his seven games started this season, he had 18 total tackles (10 solo, 8 assisted), 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 2 pressures, and 3 missed tackles (14.3% missed tackle rate). He played a substantial amount of time as well, receiving 60% of defensive snaps and 9% of special teams snaps in the games he played.

Now Rankins will look to recover from his ailment if he has not already gotten to a good point in doing so, and will be looking for a new team entering the 2025 season. Given he has plenty of time to do so as he was released prior to the signing period opening, he will most definitely have the opportunity to find a new squad and hopefully will land somewhere that will give him a quality opportunity. The Saints could use another defensive tackle, and given his experience with the team, maybe they bring him in as a veteran presence and see what he can bring to the table.

Drew Brees answers burning question of whether or not he'll coach in the future

Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been one of the best signal-callers in NFL history, has dabbled in broadcast and has been quite the figure in the food industry scene between places like Walk-Ons and Smalls Sliders.

But one of the biggest questions surrounding his future, especially after his small stint at Purdue, is whether or not he will pursue a career in coaching in the future. For now, that does not seem like anything that will be on the immediate horizon. But, at the same time, Brees did not completely rule out the possibility.

“As far as specifically going into coaching, I probably wouldn’t be a college coach or an NFL coach, at this stage,” Brees said in an interview with RG.org. “But I would say that there is always some level of coaching or mentorship that is taking place (in my everyday life).”

Looking back at the time he spent as an assistant coach for Purdue’s bowl game a few years back, Brees seems to view that as just a little kind gesture he did to help out.

“I said to them, ‘While you’re going through this transition, if you need help for the bowl game, I am happy to do that,'” Brees recalled. “I felt like it would be fun to be with the team during the bowl season and kind of solidify confidence in that program at that time.”

When looking at coaching in general, Brees says he feels like he is ‘coaching’ essentially every day in some capacity or another.

“I love coaching. I love coaching my kids,” Brees said. “Indirectly, I am always coaching. Whether it be with young players who are coming up and asking for advice, or an NFL guy calling, I have those conversations all throughout the year.”

While it is still entirely possible that we could see Brees calling plays on the sideline someday, Saints fans will have to put their hopes away that such a thing happening in New Orleans soon is nothing more than a pipe dream.

Kellen Moore hires former teammate to the Saints special teams staff

One commonality on Kellen Moore’s coaching staff has been familiarity. You saw that with his connection to most of the coaches he hired on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley was the head coach when Moore was with the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore is continuing to use those connections to fill out his staff.

The latest coach to be hired by the New Orleans Saints with a connection to Moore is Kyle Wilber. The New Orleans Times-Picayune’s Luke Johnson reported the Saints hired Wilber as a special teams assistant Monday morning, an upgrade from being the Green Bay Packers special teams quality control coach.

Moore and Wilber’s paths crossed during their playing days. Wilber spent 10 years in the NFL as a linebacker, and the first six years of his career were spent with the Dallas Cowboys. The newly-minted Saints head coach shared the latter three years of Wilber’s stint in Dallas when he was the Cowboys’ backup quarterback. Wilber left right before Moore transitioned to the Cowboys coaching staff.

Wilber also quickly traded in his helmet for a headset. He’s spent the last two years in Green Bay. Wilber worked closely with All-Pro return specialist Keisean Nixon. Punter Daniel Whelan also recorded the second best yards per punt average in Packers history in his rookie season. Phil Galiano will be promoted to the Saints’ special teams coordinator but Wilber will work closely with him keeping the Saints’ kicking units on top of their game.

How a Matthew Stafford trade would impact Derek Carr's NFL future

The Los Angeles Rams have given Matthew Stafford’s agent permission to speak with other teams, which may open the door for him to be traded. The New Orleans Saints don’t have the current supporting cast to make this move make sense, so they shouldn’t be expected to be involved in trade discussions for Stafford.

The news however does impact Saints quarterback Derek Carr. His future in New Orleans remains uncertain, and Kellen Moore didn’t provide any clarification on the matter in his introductory press conference.

Stafford pushes Carr down the veteran quarterback big board if Carr leaves New Orleans. Additionally, Stafford and Carr could be competing in the same market of teams.

Carr may mostly attract teams trying to avoid the basement, but quality teams looking for a boost could want him as well. Teams who feel like they have a strong team but aren’t getting quality play from their quarterback may view Stafford as the ideal piece to take them over the edge.

The Saints once felt that way about Carr. Though it didn’t work out in New Orleans, a team like the Steelers could still view Carr similarly to how they viewed Russell Wilson a year ago. They feel like they have a championship team and could support Carr by not requiring him to do too much.

How many teams feel that way about their team? Maybe a couple. Those teams are now prioritizing Stafford and likely Sam Darnold. The more targets that fit the description, the tougher it could be on Carr.

The other side of the coin is someone would have to replace Stafford with the Rams. They’re positioned late in the first round. If they opted to draft a guy like Jaxson Dart, they may still want someone to mentor and start ahead of the rookie.

Alontae Taylor reflects on advising prospects at the HBCU Legacy Bowl

Alontae Taylor spent time with the athletes at the HBCU Legacy Bowl over the course of the week and reflected on his experience with New Orleans Saints team reporter Erin Summers.

The Saints defensive back is in the position these prospects are aiming to be in, so he’s more than qualified to give them advice.

Prior to the practices for the all star game, the players went through the HBCU Combine. Alabama A&M offensive tackle Carson Vinson was the only HBCU player invited to the NFL Scouting Combine this year. This event allowed more HBCU players to go through the process in front of all 32 teams.

This is where Taylor was able to give his advice. “Being able to talk to them earlier in the week with Marcus and pick their brain and just teach them things that I’ve already been through that can help them in their combine experience.”

Taylor understands the value of the game, as well as the combine, for these players. “It’s very important for them because they’re getting an opportunity.”

Every player in this game is competing for the chance to be drafted. The top players are looking to be drafted in the mid-to-late round rounds at best. Some of those players are fighting to be considered as an undrafted free agent option.

That’s part of what comes with being a small school prospect. Taylor was correct to point out “there’s a lot of great athletes in HBCUs that don’t get the exposure,” and the Legacy Bowl lets them “broadcast their talents in front of all 32 teams.”

Saints hire another college coach, former NFL linebacker, to work with Brandon Staley's defense

The New Orleans Saints are hiring California Golden Bears defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon to come work as their new linebackers coach, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He’s another new arrival with few connections to the old Sean Payton-Dennis Allen regime, and will work as a position coach under defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.

Sirmon, 48, was a fourth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans back in 2000 and played for them until 2006. A former linebacker himself, he’s continued to coach that position at a number of college stops over the years — he overlapped with Terry Joseph, the Saints’ new defensive pass game coordinator, when they were both on staff with the Tennessee Volunteers in 2010 and 2011.

He’s been at Cal since 2018, though, and has worn a number of hats as an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, while coaching both inside and outside linebackers at different times. Back in 2019 he was recognized as the college Linebackers Coach of the Year by FootballScoop. Now he’s turning pro.

Should the Saints sign DE Joey Bosa?

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

The five-time Pro Bowler was recently released by the Chargers.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Chargers released edge rusher Joey Bosa. For the first time in his career, he is set to test free agency.

Over the years, Bosa has become an iconic member of the Chargers. His 72.0 sacks rank second in team history, behind Leslie O’Neal, who had 105.5. Bosa is also a five-time Pro Bowler and was named the rookie of the year in 2016. He is sure to be a hot commodity once free agency starts.

However, his recent health issues have resulted in a career decline, with him playing only 28 games since 2022 and adding only 14 sacks to his total. Bosa's five sacks in 2024 would have ranked third on the Saints behind Bryan Breese (7.5), Carl Granderson (5.5), and Chase Young (5.5).

Currently, the San Francisco 49ers, where his younger brother Nick plays, are the favorite team to sign him. His mother, Cheryl Bosa, is leading the charge on that front.

“BREAKING NEWS Can we get a petition going to get @jbbigbear to the bay?” His mom said on her Instagram story.

Despite his injury history, his talent is enough for me to say that the New Orleans Saints should give him a call. The opportunity for a career resurgence is too good to pass up. Additionally, there is the Brandin Staley connection. The current defensive coordinator of the Saints was the head coach for the Chargers from 2021-2023.

Derek Carr converts salary cap, will stay in New Orleans, per reports

Las Vegas Raiders v New Orleans Saints

The veteran quarterback will be the starter for the Saints.

After weeks of speculation on the future of Derek Carr and the New Orleans Saints, the rumors of the veteran signal caller leaving have officially been put to bed.

Carr will be converting most of his nearly $40 million salary into a signing bonus for salary cap purposes.

After discussing multiple options for handling his 2025 compensation, the #Saints and QB Derek Carr are expected to convert most of the money into a signing bonus for salary-cap purposes, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

Carr is in line to get all $40 million owed this year. pic.twitter.com/NSSWg5kyJM

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 8, 2025

The news comes after weeks of speculation regarding Carr's future with New Orleans, thanks in large part to the nearly $30 million increase to the league's salary cap.

Carr will look to have a better season after missing half of the season in 2024 with multiple injuries, including a broken hand.

The 11-year veteran will also hope to get off on the right foot with his new head coach Kellen Moore, who will be looking to make an impact offensively early in his head coaching tenure.

The move saves the Saints nearly $30 against the cap, according to Nick Underhill.

Upcoming Saints free agents who could return next season

Los Angeles Rams v New Orleans Saints

All of these players could be retained on cheap contracts.

The New Orleans Saints have some cap space issues to deal with before making any signings this year, but re-signing or bringing in players on short-term cheap deals can still be done. Paulson Adebo and Chase Young are the two main upcoming Saints free agents, but their contracts will be very pricy for a team trying to rebuild the cap space. The team’s focus could be more on the cheaper players out of contract that could still make an impact next season.

WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

New Orleans Saints v Carolina Panthers

This move seems like a no-brainer, and a couple of weeks ago, it may have looked unlikely. Over recent days, players like Tyler Lockett and Christian Kirk being cut, and big-name WRs like DK Metcalf asking for trades, the WR market has become filled with options. Scenarios like this usually drops the contract price for the players in that position, so the Saints should be able to sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a cheap deal. Last season, the Bills cut MVS, and New Orleans signed him to a 1-year, $1 million deal. Scantling stepped up when injuries destroyed the Saints WR room and made massive plays throughout last season. Although his role should be slightly decreased from last season, bringing back MVS will still be the Saints keeping an excellent weapon for this offense. With this WR market, New Orleans will not need to offer Scantling much to return, and another short-term, 1-year deal would be expected.

Projected Deal: 1-year, $3 million

ED Tanoh Kpassagnon

New Orleans Saints v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tanoh Kpassagnon's name may be a forgotten one on the Saints roster, but should be one to look out for going into free agency. An injury in the offseason knocked Kpassagnon out of playing until January, and when he came back, his role was a bit all over the place especially with Dennis Allen being fired early in the season. Kpassagnon has been a solid piece to this defense since being signed in 2021, and he could be even better in Brandon Staley’s scheme. The team will unlikely completely change to Staley’s scheme right away, but 3-4 defense sets will still be utilized way more than before. Kpassagnon is a perfect short-term/rotational piece in a 3-4 defense, and if Chase Young does leave in free agency, the Saints will need as much edge rusher help as they can get. His run defense and strength is excellent for that 3-4 defensive end role, and if Staley does want to make that scheme switch early, bringing Kpassagnon back makes too much sense.

Projected Deal: 2-year, $4 million

S Will Harris

Las Vegas Raiders v New Orleans Saints

The last player that the Saints should try to bring back on a cheap deal is safety Will Harris. Last season, Harris made some mistakes but he also made some massive plays for the defense. There were few expectations for Harris in New Orleans, and in a very disappointing season, his impact was a bright spot. Kellen Moore has mentioned that he wants his defense to play with intensity, and Will Harris will bring that. The safety room needs better depth, and if Harris does leave, this spot on the defense may be one of the weakest. Bringing back Harris at least will be the retention of a decent depth piece, and if Staley can get the best out of him, Harris will continue to make impact plays while being more consistent.

Projected Deal: 1-year, $3 million

These three upcoming Saints free agents are cheap options for the team to keep on the roster. Would you be all for New Orleans bringing back these players? Or do you think the team should let them walk? Are there any other players the Saints can attempt to retain in free agency?

Saints restructure LB Demario Davis

New Orleans Saints v Green Bay Packers

Inching closer to positive cap space.

The New Orleans Saints need to get to positive cap space by the start of the league year, which is this Wednesday. With moves expected to be made in free agency and the Saints already trading for former Patriots DT Davon Godchaux, more cap space needs to be opened up. The team can do this without destroying next year’s cap space, and being selective in who they restructure is how they do that. The Saints can focus on only restructuring players expected to be on this roster for the next 2-3 years. Usually, this applies to the younger players, but one of the older veterans is the exception. Today, per Mike Triplett, the New Orleans Saints have restructured Demario Davis’s contract.

Hearing Demario Davis will be among the traditional restructures to help get Saints under cap. He is due $8.25M in the final year of his contract, and the Saints can move up to $5.6M in cap charges into future years with his deal

Still waiting on actual pay cuts with other deals

— Mike Triplett (@MikeTriplett) March 10, 2025

With the Saints being selective in restructures, pay cuts will happen with some older players, such as Cam Jordan and Taysom Hill. However, a restructure makes sense, with Demario Davis still incredibly impactful. Davis showed little sign of slowing down in 2024, and if he stays healthy, his impact on the field can continue. This restructuring will get the Saints closer to the positive, but more work needs to be done, so expect additional contract news in the coming days.

New Orleans now has a little over $13.5 million in cap space.

The New Orleans Saints have given themselves little more cap space by restructuring the contracts of DE Carl Granderson, G Cesar Ruiz and DT Khalen Saunders per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

Granderson first signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in May 2019. In 2022, he signed a two-year contract extension with the team. Then in September 2023, he received a four-year, $52 million contract extension.

Ruiz was drafted by the Saints in the 1st round (24th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft In 2023, he signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension with $30 million guaranteed.

Saunders signed a three-year, $14.5 million contract with the Saints in March 2023.

The trio of moves now gives the New Orleans a little over $13.5 million in cap space.

Former Saints 1st-round pick Payton Turner signed by Cowboys

Pass rusher leaves New Orleans after missing more than half of his tenure with various injuries.

One of the bigger disappointments in recent NFL Draft memory for the New Orleans Saints has moved on. Payton Turner has reportedly agreed to a 1-year $3 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys. The Saints obviously did not pick up his fifth-year option, so Turner departs for Dallas after just four seasons in New Orleans.

The #Cowboys are giving former #Saints first-rounder Payton Turner a 1-year, $3M deal with $2M guaranteed, source said.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 11, 2025

Turner was picked with the 28th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after a good but unremarkable career at the University of Houston. He was a project but never managed to stay on the field, as he only played 31 of a possible 68 games during his tenure in New Orleans due to injury problems. This is including his playing a career high 16 games last season as well, as prior to the 2024 season he had only played in 15 games in three years. When he was on the field, he was far from productive, as he only managed 5 sacks in 31 career games played.

What makes the pick hurt more is that three pass rushers drafted after Turner with picks 30-32 in the same draft (Gregory Rousseau, Odafe Oweh, and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka) all have played double the number of games and have at least triple the number of sacks as Turner.

Age is still on his side as he is just 26 years old, so maybe a change of scenery will benefit him. But Turner will be remembered in New Orleans as one of the more disappointing draft picks in franchise history.

Free agents the Saints should target after day 3

With some cap space to use, building for the present and future is paramount.

The New Orleans Saints started slow in the legal tampering period, but by the end of day 2, the team re-signed Chase Young and Juwan Johnson, traded for Davon Godchaux, and signed Justin Reid to a three-year contract. Even after making these moves, the Saints still have space to make more signings in free agency, so here are some options for New Orleans on day 3.

CB Asante Samuel Jr.

With Paulson Adebo leaving in free agency, the Saints have a massive weakness at cornerback. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor are the two current starters, but Taylor is projected to move back to slot corner. This leaves the second CB spot opposite McKinstry wide open, and although the Saints could and should select a CB in the draft, relying on a rookie right away is a considerable risk. The other option is to go with a free agent, and Asante Samuel Jr. makes the most sense. Being only 25, Samuel Jr. would be a dynamic young piece to add to the Saints defense and an excellent investment for the future. With New Orleans hiring several college-level coaches for this defensive staff, investing in development and youth is an apparent goal. There is a real chance this defense looks completely different in two seasons, so being prepared for that is smart. In addition, when Brandon Staley was the head coach of the Chargers, Samuel Jr. made massive improvements and was an important piece in the defense. Asante Samuel Jr. seems like a no-brainer signing, with him being a younger option and already succeeding in Staley’s scheme.

Projected Deal: 3-year, $36 million

OG Will Hernandez

Another massive weakness on this Saints roster is LG. Currently, they do not have a starting player for that position on the team, and although this year’s draft can be a great option, I would rather have that potential prospect develop instead of throwing them to the wolves. Going into the draft, the Saints need to find their starting LG, and Will Hernandez can be just that. Last season, before the season-ending knee injury, Hernandez was the starting RG for the Cardinals and looked really solid. He would have to switch to LG for the Saints, but he already has a prior history playing at that position. Unlike the Samuel Jr. signing, this one would not be a big investment for the future, but Hernandez can be a short-term fix to allow a drafted player to develop. Also, Hernandez should be a cheaper option compared to the other free agent guards available.

Projected Deal: 2-year, $14 million

The Saints have some cap space to use, so who would you like New Orleans to sign? Would you rather them sign 1-year deals? Or invest in the future? Let us know in the comments below!

MVS reunites with Klint Kubiak in Seattle.

Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks worth up to $5.5 million, per Tom Pelissero. Valdes-Scantling reunites with former Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.

New Orleans signed the veteran receiver late in the 2024 season after injuries plagued their wide receiver room, taking out Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

Valdes-Scantling burst into the scene with the Saints in his second game with the team, bringing in 3 receptions for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. He would respond one week later with a two-reception game for 87 yards and a touchdown. Valdes-Scantling’s Saints tenure would end with the veteran receiver recording 17 receptions for 385 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Now going onto the fifth team in his career, Valdes-Scantling hopes to land a bigger role with the Seahawks who recently lost veterans Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.

The Saints have a need at wide receiver and the departure of Valdes-Scantling only emphasizes the void. There remain other veteran receivers on the market for New Orleans to contact, such as wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, and the team has been linked to other receivers in the draft.
