Game 92: Reds vs. Marlins (7:10 PM ET) - Martinez vs. Perez

Cincinnati Reds v Boston Red Sox

Go Reds!

The Cincinnati Reds need a win in the worst possible way.

They’ve lost three in a row and five of seven overall, and another loss tonight would send them all the way back to a .500 record.

For all the optimism that was sported through the month of June, this club is stubbing its toe during one of the most pivotal stretches of their season, and they’re running out of time to convince the front office and ownership that they’re worth investing in at the trade deadline to keep the 2025 dreams alive.

Once again, they have the Miami Marlins on their plate in their home ball park. It’s time they started winning games against the teams they absolutely must beat this year to stand a chance at making the playoffs.

First pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET tonight with Nick Martinez on the bump throwing it.

Game 93: Just please don’t get wrecked by the Marlins again, Reds

Milwaukee Brewers v Miami Marlins

Go, Reds?

Former National League Cy Young Award winner Sanday Alcantara is on the mound for the Miami Marlins tonight in Great American Ball Park as they attempt to take their third straight game off the Cincinnati Reds.

It’s been a brutal stretch for the Reds, who have now dropped four in a row overall to fall all the way back to .500.

For all the pseudo optimism there was around this club a week and a half ago when Chase Burns made his debut, we’re now talking about a club that’s 8.5 games back of its division leader, mired in 4th place within said division, 4 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot (with at least 3 teams they’ll need to jump depending on how today goes), and a blink away from literally having a losing record.

How long have we been asked to wait for a good, legit Reds team, again?

I digress.

It’s up to All-Star Andrew Abbott to help stem the tide on the mound, while the Bats, quite simply, have to wake the f&*k up.

Reds win 6-0, salvage series split with Marlins

Miami Marlins v Cincinnati Reds

It was bad, but it could have been much, much worse.

Things weren’t bleak bleak on Tuesday night. We’ve all witnessed the Cincinnati Reds lose a hundred games, rebuild thrice, and do everything in their power to underperform for the better part of our lives, after all.

Things were not 2022 bleak, nor were they 2015 bleak. They were, however, frustratingly bleak given the expectations placed on this year’s club, what with Terry Francona trotted in and Elly De La Cruz officially ascending into superstardom.

They’d just gotten smothered by the lowly, rebuilding Miami Marlins by the tune of 12-2, and had it done to them in their home stadium, no less. They’d lost each of the first two games of the series on a homestand that featured two of the worst clubs in the game, and they’d officially fallen all the way back to level-par - a literal .500 club.

Playing .500 ball through ~90 games would have felt like a godsend in some of those aforementioned seasons. Good lord, we have seen some shit around these parts. But for a team like this, that finally had expectations, to have slumped that low just a week or two after they’d finally played well enough to make us believe?

It really does make you weight whether it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

Anyway, these Reds have picked themselves up off the mat from Tuesday’s woes. They blasted the Marlins last night 7-2 and again this afternoon 6-0, following the lead of Nick Lodolo (6.0 scoreless IP) and Spencer Steer (dinger!) to sneak back up to 48-46 and halve the series.

On top of that, they’ve got the lowly Colorado Rockies coming to town for a three-game set this weekend, precisely the club who’s going to threaten to lose more games than any team ever has in a single season this season.

It would be preferred if things never proceeded as if they were on a roller coaster, but that’s just not the way the Baseball Gods prefer it. They’re going to reel you in, give you your lungs back, and do it all over time and time again. From Tuesday’s glumness to today’s high, it’s now feasible these Reds could enter the All-Star break five games over .500 and right back in this thing.

(If, of course, they don’t botch the series against the Rockies the way they botched the one against the Marlins.)

We’ve got a weekend of baseball left before the real baseball begins. Here’s hoping the Reds haven’t already looked too far ahead and can take care of business to - yes - send us into the break (and trade season) with more hope than we’ve had around here in years.

Who will win the 2025 Home Run Derby?

Gillette Home Run Derby presented by Head & Shoulders

Photo by LG Patterson/MLB via Getty Images

We’ll find out tonight!

The annual Home Run Derby commences this evening at 8 PM ET in Atlanta as part of this year’s All-Star Game festivities.

While there have been a few notable scratches and even more high-profile players decline to participate altogether, there will still be a solid eight-pack of sluggers who’ll be out there crushing dingers into the humid Georgia air tonight.

That includes Matt Olson, Atlanta’s All-Star 1B who - like Todd Frazier in 2015 - will be trying to win the derby in his home park. He’ll be joined by a cadre of National League and American League mashers (not all of whom are actual ‘All-Stars’ this year).

Here’s the full list of participants:

Matt Olson, 1B (Atlanta Braves)

Junior Caminero, 3B (Tampa Bay Rays)

Oneil Cruz, CF (Pittsburgh Pirates)

Byron Buxton, CF (Minnesota Twins)

Jazz Chisholm, Jr., 2B/3B (New York Yankees)

Cal Raleigh, C (Seattle Mariners)

James Wood, OF (Washington Nationals)

Brent Rooker, DH (Las Oaklamentgas A’s)

You can watch the entire festivities on ESPN beginning at 8 PM ET.

Who ya got winning this one?

How to watch the 2025 MLB All-Star Game

2025 MLB All-Star Game

Elly De La Cruz is there!

The 2025 edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game takes place tonight in Atlanta, with coverage set to begin at 8 PM ET on FOX. Joe Davis, John Smoltz, Ken Rosenthal, and Tom Verducci will spearhead the televised coverage, though we’ll surely have multiple players mic’d up (and interviewed mid-game), too.

They’ll be using the automated ball-strike challenge system in this exhibition, a quirk that will surely infuriate at least one or six people along the way. They’ll also each be wearing their own team’s regular season uniforms instead of the usual horribly designed ASG-specific ones we’ve seen in the past.

Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates will toe the rubber for the National League, meaning he’ll throw the first pitch seeing as the NL will act as the home team in the Braves home park. Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal will start for the AL on the other side.

Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz isn’t in the starting lineup at short for the NL as Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets earned that nod in the voting. Elly will surely feature at some point, however, while lefty Andrew Abbott - who’s on almost a full week’s rest - has a chance to toss some pitches for the NL squad at some point, too.

Go All-Stars!

NL team is stacked, AL team is, well, Cal Raleigh is fun!

Should the Reds call up Sal Stewart in this season’s second half?

Rocket City Trash Pandas v. Chattanooga Lookouts

Photo by Maddalena LoRae/Minor League Baseball

You tell us!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cincinnati Reds fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Cincinnati Reds prospect Sal Stewart was drafted out of Westminster Christian School (FL) with a reputation as a pure hitter. That’s the tool that earned him an offer to play ball at powerhouse Vanderbilt University, an offer he eschewed when the Reds used the #32 overall pick on him back in 2022.

Since turning pro, Sal has done nothing to dispel the notion that he’s one of the better young hitters on the planet.

He’s the owner of a career .389 OBP across over 1200 PA in the minors, including a brilliant .306/.377/.473 overall line so far in 2025. All that production has come for AA Chattanooga, to date, though Sal just earned a promotion to AAA Louisville while also repping the Reds in this past weekend’s All-Star Futures Game.

Still just 21 years old, it’s pretty clear Sal’s trajectory has him on the Cincinnati Reds in short order. The question, though, is just how short.

So far in 2025, the collective output from Cincinnati’s 3B corps has produced a miserable 64 wRC+, a mark that’s good for third worst in all Major League Baseball. Sal, of course, plays 3B.

So far in 2025, the collective output from Cincinnati’s DH corps has produced a mediocre 94 wRC+, a mark that’s good for 21st. Sal, of course, can hit designatedly.

He’s clearly a long-term piece. Is he a short-term answer, too?

Should the Reds give Sal a call-up in 2025? Is he the kind of piece that could help push this team into playoff position?

Tell us in the survey below!

What the Cincinnati Reds need to make a playoff run in 2025

Colorado Rockies v Cincinnati Reds

Or, rather, ‘who’ they need.

A lot has been made of ‘expected’ stats permeating the baseball analytics landscape and how they do yeoman’s work to determing how good a player probably ‘should’ have been.

Expected Weighted On-Base Average (xwOBA), for instance, was put together to estimate how much offense you should have expected a batter to produce based on things like exit velocity, launch angle, and the player’s sprint speed. In other words, if they’re only hitting .210 with a 10.1% HR/FB rate but they’re smashing line drives over 100 mph off the bat all the time, you’d be considered very reasonable to suggest that they’ve simply been a bit unlucky and better times are right around the corner.

When a player isn’t producing and their expected stats - xwOBA, xBA (expected Batting Average), and xSLG (expected Slugging) - all rank in the bottom tier of the game, that’s when you begin to think things simply are not going well for good reason.

Colorado Rockies v Cincinnati Reds

Expectations heaped upon certain players are harder to quantify than expected statistics, but they can also tell a pretty distinct story. Take, for instance, a Major League Baseball team going out of their way to trade an established player at a particular position to clear a path to everyday playing time for a younger, less established one. That’s a pretty clear indication they’ve got high expectations for the younger guy’s production, as is the conscious decision to bat said player 2nd in the batting order almost every single time they’re healthy enough to play.

The Cincinnati Reds went out of their way to trade for Jose Trevino this winter, sure, and they even gave him a contract extension. And he’s hit well - that 104 OPS+ so far is certainly better than anybody I know expected. That said, he’s batted 9th more than he’s hit anywhere else in the lineup when playing, and hasn’t started a game in a batting order hitting higher than 6th.

In other words, while the Reds built their roster and daily lineups with hope Trevino would hit like this, they clearly weren’t banking on it. Him hitting like this where he is in the lineup is simply a very much appreciated bonus.

The Reds, right now, have the single worst slugging percentage (.272) from the collective work of their #2 hitters in the lineup of any club in baseball, and it’s not particularly close. Cleveland, who’s the next worst, is slugging .322. By wOBA, HR, RBI, and wRC+, Reds #2 spot hitters rank 29th out of the 30 MLB clubs - whether you believe in new-age statistics or the vintage ones, they’ve been simply abysmal in their production there. Their .080 ISO also, predictably, ranks dead last.

It’s a bit alarming that it’s already been nearly two decades since Tom Tango released ‘The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball,’ a groundbreaking analytical look at the game in ways I’d never fathomed before. In it, Tango breaks down lineup optimization theory, effectively emphasizing that a team’s three best hitters should probably hit 1st, 2nd, and 4th based on a litany of inputs (like number of times they get to the plate, how often they’re up with nobody on, and countless others). It’s no secret that the old days of hitting ‘a guy who can handle the bat and bunt the leadoff guy over’ in the #2 spot have gone by the wayside, and Aaron Judge, Ketel Marte, Rafael Devers, James Wood, and Kyle Tucker now routinely bat 2nd in their respective lineups.

Whether they read The Book before bed every night and worship it by day or merely pay enough attention to what its byproducts have produced, front offices and dugouts now know that they need to have perhaps their single best bat hitting in the #2 hole every night. So, for the Reds to have struggled so, so badly in a spot that’s so, so important means one of two things - either their expectations on the guy being tasked with hitting 2nd were wildly off-base, or that guy is long overdue for a complete reversal of fortune.

McLain’s Statcast percentile rankings that don’t exactly scream ‘bad luck.’

That guy, more often than not, has been Matt McLain. He’s logged 217 PA in the #2 spot so far this season, and he’s hit a meager .191/.296/.293 (67 wRC+) in that time. Santiago Espinal (a brutal 36 wRC+ in 131 PA hitting 2nd) hasn’t helped the overall numbers, either, though he only ended up there when McLain was hurt early this year and after McLain hit so badly there that he was dropped to the bottom of the order.

In other words, the Reds didn’t just enter this season expecting McLain to be significantly better than he’s been, they entered this season with expectations that he would quite literally be one of the two or three bats that carried this lineup. Instead, he’s been one of the worst bats they’ve rolled out all year, the lost 2024 season and multiple shoulder and oblique injuries clearly putting more rust on him than was expected.

The Reds moved Jonathan India to Kansas City to free up a role for McLain. They’ve committed to him being one of the faces of this franchise. Despite all of his struggles so far, they’re still 3 games over .500 and have eyes on a Wild Card path to the playoffs. To get to that end, though, they’re going to have to make some really tough, really shrewd decisions to make the product on the field better.

Chief among them, in my opinion, is whether they have their #2 hitter, or need a new one. They need to figure out if what they’ve asked of McLain in 2025 is simply too much, or whether he’s just been worse than he will be by season’s end. That’s not even suggesting that they go out and trade for a big bat - these are the Reds, after all, and that’s never their M.O. This is merely them determining if they’re finally ready to back off their 2025 hopes for McLain and shake up the top of the lineup to get more out of the outstanding production they’ve received from the likes of TJ Friedl, Elly De La Cruz, and Austin Hays around McLain’s foibles.

Maybe they should move Elly up to 2nd. Maybe they should flip-flop Spencer Steer with McLain, seeing as Steer has shrugged off his early-season shoulder issues to post an .871 OPS over his last 35 games. Regardless, it’s just about time they realized that while McLain is still young enough and talented enough to show a lot more than he has, it just might not be on his back that this team gets carried to the playoffs in 2025.

How will the Reds divvy up their bonus pool?

The Cincinnati Reds picked Steele Hall out of Hewitt-Trussville High School (AL) with their first selection in this week’s MLB Draft, and followed that up with an additional 19 picks in their overall draft class.

To get that group signed, they’ll have to use some creative math while navigating an overall bonus pool of some $11,836,800. Hall’s slot value at pick #9 sits a little over $6.5 million, for instance, but there’s some hope he’ll sign for slightly below that number to allow the Reds to spread that savings across some over-slot deals elsewhere.

We’ll track all the signings here as they come in, with July 28th the deadline for these deals to be reached!

You would have loved to see Seth Hernandez be picked by the Cincinnati Reds

2025 MLB Draft

That’s not how the cards fell, however!

Mock Drafts were all over the place heading into the start of the 2025 MLB Draft. Since there was no consensus #1 overall pick, how the early portion of the draft went was sure to send the subsequent picks into some sort of chaos, with multiple players being linked to just about every single team in the Top 20.

The Cincinnati Reds held pick #9, and after asking for your opinion on several players linked to the Reds in the run-up to the draft, you responded collectively by saying you’d like to see Corona High School (CA) pitcher Seth Hernandez selected by the Reds.

Hernandez narrowly beat out Ike Irish in your voting. That said, Hernandez was long off the board by the time the Reds actually got to use pick #9 last night.

They selected Steele Hall, the reigning Alabama Mr. Baseball, with said pick, and seem to be incredibly happy with how that turned out. Given that Hall reclassified from a would-be member of the 2026 Draft class, the Reds think they got the guy who would’ve gone #1 overall next year at a bargain this year.

We’ll see!

Yeah, Reds fans want to see Sal Stewart in the big leagues this year

2025 MLB All-Star Week: Futures Game

Is he ‘the’ answer to their offensive problems?

MLB Reacts are brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook.

This week’s MLB Reacts question was simple and straightforward on the surface.

Do you think the Cincinnati Reds should call-up top hitting prospect Sal Stewart for his MLB debut before the end of the 2025 season?

Over three-fourths of you believe so, and given how well Sal has hit so far in the minors this year - including a promotion to AAA Louisville to begin the season’s second half - it’s hard to disagree with you.

77% of you think he’s worthy of a call-up at some point soon, though that points to a much larger issue at hand: the fate of the 2025 Cincinnati Reds. That’s a question that’s not nearly as straightforward as they sit just 50-47 and facing a gauntlet of teams also very much ‘in the mix’ for playoff pushes between now and the trade deadline at the end of the month.

Perhaps the bigger question is this - do the Reds need to add another quality offensive player between now and the end of the season in order to make a tangible chase for a playoff spot? And, if so, is Sal Stewart that guy?

The production the Reds have received from their collective 3B and 2B so far this year has been decidedly sub-par, after all, and those are the spots Sal has played throughout the course of his minors career. Cincinnati could also stand to boost production at both 1B and DH, too, and Sal has long been projected as a guy who might end up as a 1B long-term, too.

While we still need to see what Sal can do at AAA for at least a little bit, we also need to see if a healthy Noelvi Marte can help answer at least one of the above problems going forward. After that, though, it may well be that Sal Stewartat some point in August makes more sense as an offensive addition than mortgaging the farm to add a bat a couple of weeks earlier in what pretty clearly appears to be a seller’s market at the trade deadline.

Sal is clearly on the cusp one way or another. The kid can rake, and we’re going to see him in the big leagues sooner than later.

Game 99: Reds at Mets (4:10 PM ET) - Martinez vs. Holmes

Colorado Rockies v Cincinnati Reds

Go Reds!

If the Cincinnati Reds play the way they played last night for most of the rest of the 2025 season, Nick Martinez is going to end up being a key piece for their run to the playoffs.

How the Reds try to manage the innings on Chase Burns’ arm and how quickly they insert Hunter Greene back into the starting rotation will be eased significantly by the versatility of Martinez, who is both willing and able to throw an inning or four here and make a 100 pitch start just a couple of days later. In so many ways, he’s exactly what can ‘unlock’ an entire Cincinnati pitching staff.

If the Reds play at all worse than they did yesterday, however, today may end up being one of the final times we even see Nick in a Reds uniform.

Cincinnati won yesterday in their series opener against the New York Mets, but they still sit 7.5 games back in the National League Central division (in 4th place) and 2.5 games back of the last NL Wild Card spot (with the need to jump each of St. Louis, San Francisco, and San Diego). If the Reds stumble at all in the next week, Martinez - who’s earning $21.05 million in his final season of team control - would end up one of the better rental arms on the trade block.

Such is life in the tightly packed NL playoff race. Such is also life in the realm of the Reds, who are forever looking to be opportunistic when the chance arises to both save cash and load up on the farm system.

Martinez toes the rubber today at 4:10 PM ET against the Mets opposite Clay Holmes. Go get ‘em, Nick! Go get ‘em, Redlegs!

Cincinnati Reds sign 1st round pick Steele Hall

2025 MLB Draft presented by Nike

The deal is done!

Steele Hall has checked a lot of boxes in a hurry.

The former class of 2026 shortstop out of Hewitt-Trussville High School (AL) reclassified to graduate a year early, and that he did. On top of his high school graduation, he picked up both a scholarship to play ball for the University of Tennessee as well as Mr. Baseball honors for the state of Alabama - all prior to becoming a 1st round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2025 MLB Draft.

Now, he can add ‘bank account with an extra comma’ to that list.

The Reds made Hall’s signing official on Friday afternoon prior to the start of their series in New York against the Mets, with MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon reporting that it was a deal worth $5.75 million.

That would put it significantly below slot value of $6.513 million, meaning the Reds will have almost a million dollars left over to throw at some of their other highly touted draft picks.

Hall signed for $5.75 million bonus, below slot value for the pick.

Congrats to the Reds and Steele, who officially becomes a professional after signing said deal.

The Cincinnati Reds have played their way into ‘buy’ mode

Cincinnati Reds v New York Mets

They’ve got a series victory over the New York Mets already to show for it.

Cincinnati Reds superstar Elly De La Cruz has started the season’s second half by logging just a lone hit in 9 trips to the plate - a single - while striking out 3 times. And in the most twisted baseball-mind way, manager Terry Francona is probably kind of giddy about it.

Tito has long preached the effectiveness of a long lineup working deep counts and keeping the train around the bases moving as his offensive M.O., loving single after walk after double after single sometimes even more than his team just stumbling occasionally into a 2-run homer. While Elly has come out of the gate a little bit slow through two games, the rest of Tito’s ever-growing lineup has been bashing the ball all over the ballpark.

There have been dingers, of course. Notably, Matt McLain has come out of the gate roaring in a way we detailed was a must-have for this Reds offense, and he homered in Friday’s series opening victory against the New York Mets. Yesterday, though, the Reds went homer-free as Jake Fraley and Spencer Steer kept the line moving with hit after hit as the Reds once again shrugged off an early defecit to roar right back past a Mets club that’s clearly eyeing a postseason run in 2025.

These Mets sit in a Wild Card spot with 55 wins to their name so far. These Reds sit 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with 52 wins on their ledger. Even in a vacuum, thta puts the Reds into the realm of ‘contenders’ with 60+ games to go, but in a Reds world where we’re only gifted even these fringe opportunities once every blue moon, this Reds team has played its way into being proactive - even to a fault - at this July’s trade deadline.

That means now! That means this week! That means as early as they can possibly find a way to augment this team!

The question is, though, whether there’s even a clear void in the lineup the way there once was. Noelvi Marte has returned to help anchor 3B, mercifully reducing the roles of Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Santiago Espinal. Jake Fraley jumped right back into the RF mix, Austin Hays is as healthy as he’s been all year, and even Hunter Greene is poised to make a return to the starting rotation at some point in early August.

Espinal, it’s worth noting, started in RF on Friday with a LHP on the mound. Finding a RHH outfield option (a la Randal Grichuk of Arizona or Ramon Laureano of Baltimore) would be ideal, especially with Connor Joe the only other legitimate option for that on the roster. On the pitching side, a reliever to further push the likes of Taylor Rogers and Scott Barlow down the pecking order would be a dream.

Regardless, this is a Cincinnati Reds club that deserves to be given more of a chance. Hell, that might even include getting Sal Stewart into the mix - he singled and swiped a bag in his AAA debut with Louisville on Friday, by the way.

No more just waiting around to see if they’re still close enough by a set date. We are close enough to the set date of the trade deadline, and the Reds are close enough to a playoff position already. They’re in a playoffs to make the playoffs, and that has earned them enough of a leash to force the front office to go out and get better wherever they possibly can.

Lest we sit and watch this end up like the 2023 debacle.
