Reds place Jake Fraley on injured list, activate Connor Joe

Who’s hurt? You hurt? You’re probably hurt.

You probably thought the Friday night trade that brought Connor Joe to the Cincinnati Reds from the San Diego Padres was a ‘depth’ move.

WELCOME TO THE DEEP, MY FRIEND!

With Austin Hays ‘back’ but still kind of DH-ing, Spencer Steer somewhat the 1B default now (despite his shoulder still not being 100%), Tyler Callihan’s arm broken, and the otherwise robust infield mix thinned by injuries to Noelvi Marte, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Jeimer Candelario, hell, you should probably go knock on Nick Krall’s door. It’s not as if Blake Dunn, Rece Hinds, Jacob Hurtubise, or Will Benson have seemed to elbow their way in and claim a regular role.

Enter Joe, who is going from AAA El Paso to Houston to join the Reds...and jump directly into the starting lineup tonight. That’s because Jake Fraley, who’s been battling a calf issue himself, is now heading to the injured list, too.

The Reds announced the move on Saturday afternoon.

The #Reds today added IF/OF Connor Joe to the active roster and placed on the 10-day injured list OF Jake Fraley (left calf tenderness, retro to 5/7).

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) May 10, 2025

Joe is in the lineup tonight batting 9th and playing LF, doing so against a RHP even though everything about his career suggests he’s a guy who should only really get regular PA against LHP. Hays, for what its worth, is out of the lineup tonight after only being activated yesterday (for a game where he was the DH, not in the OF).

It’s enough to make you wonder if the Reds sought Joe because he was already in Texas and could presumably get to Houston quicker than anyone from other AAA clubs. (No, don’t you dare tell me to check Google Maps to see how far El Paso is from Houston.)

Anyway, this is all getting somewhat ridiculous, especially if you’re of the age to remember Tyler Stephenson missing all of April and Matt McLain already doing time on the IL once this year, too. Get these Reds some vitamins, damnit!

Cincinnati Reds acquire IF/OF Connor Joe from Padres via trade

Cincinnati Reds Photo Day

The Reds moved Tyler Callihan to the 60-day IL to make room.

Old heads (and Getty photo archives) will remember the Connor Joe Era of Cincinnati Reds history. Back in December of 2018, the Reds selected Joe in the Rule 5 Draft, plucking him from the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and bringing him in to camp in Goodyear in search of a big league job.

That didn’t pan out, unfortunately. The Reds traded his rights to the San Francisco Giants prior to the start of the 2019 season, and Joe has since cycled through the depths of the Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and San Diego Padres organizations. In that time, he’s played corner outfield and 1B, and made a decent effort at being the lefty-mashing portion of platoons in the process.

He’ll be a Cincinnati Red again as of Friday night, too. The Reds acquired him from the Padres in exchange for AA reliever Andrew Moore, as C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic relayed during the Reds/Astros game on Friday evening.

Reds announce a trade for IF/OF Connor Joe from the Padres in exchange for RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations

C Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent.bsky.social) 2025-05-10T00:56:21.896Z

Joe, 32, owns a .760 OPS in his career against LHP (with a .702 OPS against RHP), and presumably he’ll help fill out the lineup against southpaws going forward. The Reds let Stuart Fairchild go in spring despite that being something of his calling card, but with Blake Dunn struggling and Spencer Steer’s services needed at 1B the Reds found themselves with a bit of a dearth of right-handed outfield options for the time being. In theory, Joe will help balance that a bit as a platoon option opposite Jake Fraley and the newly promoted Will Benson.

Joe has a pair of options remaining, and has actually spent most of his time with AAA El Paso so far in 2025. He’s under team control through the 2027 season, should things go well enough that the Reds want him around that long.

Welcome (back) to Cincinnati, Connor!

Game 43: Reds vs. White Sox (RAIN DELAY) - Abbott vs. Eisert

Paul Konerko #28

Go Reds, if Mother Nature allows!

The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox are mired in a rain delay at Great American Ball Park, with the original 6:40 PM ET start time now long past without first pitch having sailed.

There may be a late window this evening in which these two clubs could squeeze in a game. That remains to be seen.

Lineups below, featuring Andrew Abbott on the bump to start for the Reds. It appears the White Sox pivoted to using lefty reliever Brandon Eisert as an opener tonight prior to righty Jonathan Cannon taking over. Cannon was originally listed as the Chicago starter for the evening.

Pete Rose is now eligible for Hall of Fame induction

Cincinnati Reds vs Philadelphia Phillies

So sayeth the commissioner.

Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 by then commissioner Bart Giamatti when it was deemed that Rose had bet on the game of baseball while manager of the Cincinnati Reds. It was on that ‘banned’ list - or, rather, the ‘permanently ineligible’ list - Rose remained when he passed away in late 2024.

Such ineligiblity has left Rose, who collected more hits in Major League Baseball games than any other player, out of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Or, that’s the presumption, since we’ve not actually had the chance to see if anyone would vote for his induction given the gambling, his long refusal to admit to those misdeeds, and the admission of sleeping with underage girls during his playing career.

It appears as though current commissioner Rob Manfred has chosen to re-read the ‘permanent’ portion of the ineligible list, however, and on Tuesday MLB announced that Rose, among 17 total former players including Shoeless Joe Jackson, will now be removed from the permanently ineligible list since they’ve all since died.

Brian Murphy of MLB.com relayed the news featuring a statement from HoF Chairman of the Board Jane Forbes Clark.

“The National Baseball Hall of Fame has always maintained that anyone removed from Baseball’s permanently ineligible list will become eligible for Hall of Fame consideration,” Clark said in the statement. “Major League Baseball’s decision to remove deceased individuals from the permanently ineligible list will allow for the Hall of Fame candidacy of such individuals to now be considered. The Historical Overview Committee will develop the ballot of eight names for the Classic Baseball Era Committee – which evaluates candidates who made their greatest impact on the game prior to 1980 – to vote on when it meets next in December 2027.”

As mentioned above, it will be the Classic Baseball Era Committee these names will go through for potential future induction.

Game 45: Reds vs. White Sox (12:40 PM ET) - Martinez vs. Wilson

Chicago Cubs v Cincinnati Reds

Go, Reds?

The Chicago White Sox lost an MLB-record 121 games during the most recently completed regular season, and they followed that up by dealing ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox over the winter.

They’re bad. They’re rebuilding. They’ve already won the series in Great American Ball Park against the waffling Cincinnati Reds, and they’ve got a chance to sweep it with a win there on Thursday.

What’s standing in their way? Nick Martinez is on the bump for the Reds, though he has struggled mightily when tasked with going through any lineup more than twice. The Cincinnati offense, meanwhile, has been the single worst home offense so far this year (by wRC+), the otherwise ‘friendly’ confines of GABP instead being a massive roadblock for any Reds offense.

A loss by the Reds today would dip them 5 games under the .500 mark, which is wholly unacceptable given how goddamn long they are into the latest edition of the nonstop rebuild. That’s the kind of underwater mark that puts Martinez closer and closer to the ‘July trade chip’ conversation than anywhere else, frankly.

First pitch is coming up at 12:40 PM ET. Lineups below!

Cincinnati Reds offense wakes up in 7-1 win over Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox v Cincinnati Reds

A game salvaged from an otherwise dismal series.

The Cincinnati Reds offense was due, not just because the shutouts had been stacking up at an alarming rate.

They were due for a home run that wasn’t hit 115 mph, for an otherwise deep pop fly to coast over the cozy walls in Great American Ball Park. They were due for finding a hole through the infield, for the opposing defense to throw a ball away, for 400+ foot towers to CF to not be caught by a leaping Luis Robert, Jr.

They finally got that on Thursday afternoon in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox, thank heck.

Elly De La Cruz lifted a 395 foot ball just over the wall in left-center for his 8th dinger of the season, while Matt McLain later added a tater of his own that coasted 406 feet. Will Benson got in on the homer action with a 401 footer that actually bounced out of Robert’s glove at the CF wall, giving the Reds a trio of round trippers on the day as they dispatched the otherwise listless Sox to finally take a game of the series.

Nick Martinez was positively brilliant on the bump, tossing 7 IP of 2 H, 0 ER ball with 3 K and nary a walk as he coasted through an opposing lineup for three times successfully. His efficient 96 pitch outing helped take some of the pressure off a taxed bullpen, too, something the Reds will hopefully be able to lean into as they welcome Terry Francona’s previous club - the Cleveland Guardians - to town tomorrow for yet another big seris in GABP.

For the record, that series starts a stretch of some pretty serious competition for the 21-24 Redlegs. As Joel Luckhaupt made note of on Bluesky earlier, the upcoming 45 games for the Reds will almost exclusively come against high-caliber competition, something the Reds - who entered play today with the lowest opponent win percentage faced in all of baseball so far in 2025 - will have to find a way to overcome.

After today, the Reds next 45 games are against opponents with an average current winning percentage of .548 (89-win season). And that includes the Pirates for 3 games. Take them out and the avg win pct goes to .563 (91 wins). This is gonna be a brutal stretch.

Joel Luckhaupt (@jluckhaupt.bsky.social) 2025-05-15T14:36:11.396Z

For now, though, we savor one victory over a Chicago club that set the all-time single-season loss record just last year. It at least sets the stage for the possibility of a winning homestand should they find a way to put the brooms to Cleveland all weekend long.

Cincinnati Reds welcome Cleveland to GABP for Francona Bowl I

Cincinnati Reds v Cleveland Guardians

Photo by George Kubas/Diamond Images via Getty Images

Can they win a series at home?

Terry Francona managed in Cleveland for 11 seasons and some 1678 games. While there, he led the Guardians to four AL Central titles and the 2016 AL Pennant, that remarkable club falling just short in an epic World Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Tito was 921-747 in his Cleveland career, good for a .549 winning percentage that, quite frankly, is impossible to imagine as someone who watched the Cincinnati Reds play the exact same amount of baseball over that span.

Those Guardians will be in Cincinnati this evening (and all weekend) as the Reds host the first 2025 series of the Ohio Cup, and this time Tito’s in Cincinnati’s corner. The current Guardians, managed by Steven Vogt, still seem to be doing the same kind of winning as they experienced under Francona, entering the series at 25-18 and in 2nd place in the tightly contested AL Central division.

Cleveland’s offense is predictibly being spearheaded by future Hall of Famer Jose Ramirez and outfield hitting maestro Steven Kwan. They’ve been even better on the road so far this year, too, sporting a collective 109 wRC+ (t-7th overall) and .323 wOBA (t-9th) in games outside of Progressive Field.

If there’s a flaw with their club, it’s been with their starting pitching. They enter the series against Cincinnati sporting a 4.60 FIP from their starters (21st overall) that has been fueled by a 4.19 BB/9 from their starters that’s the single highest mark in all of baseball. The best mark of that bunch had been former Red Ben Lively (3.02 per 9 IP), but Lively hit the IL with a flexor tendon strain in his right arm just this week and will miss the series altogether.

If you simply stare at the standings, this looks like a tough one for the 21-24 Reds. However, Cleveland has reached 7 games over .500 despite having a -14 run differential already this year, while the Reds have outscored their opponents by a total of 24 runs in 2025. Something, then, should be about to give, and the hope is that it’s going to hedge towards the luck of the Reds.

We’ll find out beginning Friday night!

[UPDATE]

Friday’s game has been pushed up to a 5:10 PM ET start due to expected storms in the area. MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon relayed the news:

Nobody pulls the ball like the Cincinnati Reds

Chicago White Sox v Cincinnati Reds

I mean nobody!

Ignoring the totality of box scores is something being a fan of the Cincinnati Reds has done to me over the years.

Take last night, for instance. The Reds, according to the box score, got smoked late by a terrible Chicago White Sox club and lost yet another home game - this time by the score of 5-1. The box score is ugly, aside from Andrew Abbott’s rock solid start and a 2-hit night from Elly De La Cruz that featured the below dinger:

Elly waited patiently for that breaking ball to come back over the plate and parked it 435 feet away in the RF bleachers. That, more than the final score itself, is what I’ll likely remember from that otherwise nondescript Tuesday evening of baseball.

Said dinger seems to be following a pretty distinct trend for the 2025 Reds, too, in that it was pulled. A quick check over at the batted ball data compiled by FanGraphs shows that at 45.0%, the Reds rank at the very top of pull-percentage across the league. And when you balance that with a 20.8% opposite-field rate that ranks as the second lowest in the league, it begins to tell a bit of a tale that the Reds are, by all accounts, likely trying to pull the ball more often than any other team out there.

That’s probably not a bad thing, either.

A quick glance at the leaderboard of the individual players who pull the ball most often reveals something of a who’s who of mashers within the game. Byron Buxton has been on an absolute heater in May (1.027 OPS) and he ranks second overall at 57.7%, just slightly ahead of star Alex Bregman (57.0%) up in Boston. Cal Raleigh (56.2%) has bonked 13 homers already while the likes of Jose Altuve (55.6%), Shohei Ohtani (54.9%), and Kyle Schwarber (51.8%) all fall within the top 15 among qualified hitters.

TJ Friedl, the highest Red on the list, checks in with 54.6% - right behind Ohtani.

In a vacuum, that’s probably a cool and good thing. It’s not a coincidence that many of the game’s most potent power hitters all tend to pull the ball more often, too - tapping into ‘pull power’ has long been a thing, after all. Where that could end up a problem for the Reds, though, is when ‘pulling’ the ball doesn’t correlate with ‘elevating’ the ball, too.

Or with hitting the ball hard.

Right now, the Reds rank just 25th in hard-hit rate (28.9%) according to FanGraphs, and that’s paired with a 45.5% groundball rate that ranks as the 5th highest. In other words, a lot of their pulled balls in play are going as weakly hit grounders on which they’ve basically rolled over softly. That, I’d wager, is not what they’re trying to do even though it’s what we’ve seen more often than we’d all like through the first quarter of the season.

It will be interesting to see just how this evolves over the course of 2025 as the Reds gradual begin to welcome back bats that have already missed (or are currently missing) serious time due to injuries. Will the reintroductions of Jeimer Candelario, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Austin Hays tweak this as they pile up PAs? Will two of those dudes even make it back into the regular rotation of the Reds this season at all?

Will any of them actually, y’know, hit the ball into the GABP stands, for once?

Will Benson smashes Reds to sweep, earns Player of the Week honors

Cleveland Guardians v Cincinnati Reds

Heck, he might even win the NL PotW!

Moribund might be a tad harsh of a description for the Cincinnati Reds offense of one week ago, but it’s not too far off.

They had stumbled to losses in nine of eleven games, their bats seemingly only allowed to come alive a) in one game per week and b) all at the same time. To date, they’ve scored 68 runs in their four highest scoring games of the year, but had averaged just a hair over three runs a game in the rest of the first ~45 games of this season.

That changed at the end of the series loss to the Chicago White Sox, however, and they parlayed their 7-1 triumph in the end of that series into a steamrolling of the Cleveland Guardians in Great American Ball Park all weekend. The result after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over their Ohio Cup rivals was a sweep of the three-game series, a four-game win streak as they head to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates, and a return to a .500 overall record at 24-24 on this still young season.

Convenient storylines are a wonderful crutch for writers on Sunday evenings, and Will Benson’s re-emergence has been perfectly timed.

The former 1st round draftee of the Guardians was finally recalled from AAA Louisville by the Reds nine days ago after being overlooked in several instances by the Reds with their fringe-roster call-ups. Cincinnati had relied on a patchwork outfield with the likes of Blake Dunn and Jacob Hurtubise as regulars Jake Fraley and Austin Hays battled injuries, even turning to Tyler Callihan for a spell before the latter broke his arm. May 9th finally saw Benson recalled after too many others fell in front of him, and he has simply carried the offense of the Reds ever since.

Benson homered twice on Sunday to mark his fourth straight game with a homer, in the process driving in the entirety of the trio of runs plated by the Reds on the day. For his efforts, he’s taking home the latest Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Week honors here at Red Reporter, with the hope that Terry Francona - who was at the helm of the Guardians in 2022 when Benson first made his MLB debut - has helped him unlock the vast potential he’s flashed at times in his pro career.

Something akin to that .275/.365/.498 (128 OPS+) mark he put up in 2023 would be nice, wouldn’t it?

Congrats to Will, and here’s hoping he’s hit his way back into the regular lineup for good again.

They’ll stick in the Great Lakes region for their opponent on this quick three-game road trip, too, as the in-division Pittsburgh Pirates are next on their docket.

Lefty Nick Lodolo toes the rubber for the Reds in the series opener along the banks of the Allegheny River, while righty Mitch Keller gets the starting nod for the Pirates on the night. Meanwhile, Will Benson is searching for a homer in his fifth consecutive game as he rides the single best heater of his career (to date).

The Cincinnati Reds head to Pittsburgh on a heater

MLB Photos Archive

Photo by Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images

Can their win streak stretch to 5 games? 6 games? 7 games?!

Paul Skenes is an otherworldly talent on the mound, precisely what fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates have hoped would come along and rescue their franchise.

Skenes is also set to miss facing the Cincinnati Reds for the second time already this season, as his turn in the starting rotation didn’t come up when these two clubs faced off in early April and won’t spin around in time to face Cincinnati this week.

On paper, that should come as a boon for a surging Reds club who has won four straight and just swept aside the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend. Of course, the Reds also had their own ace in Hunter Greene firing 7 scoreless frames on April 13th as the Reds won 4-0 to secure the sweep of the Pirates the first time these clubs played this season, and Greene, of course, is currently sidelined with a groin injury.

Either way, this is a series where the Reds should continue to flex their muscles over their perennially rebuilding NL Central rivals. The Pirates are a dismal 15-32 on the season, just got swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, and have lost five of six (and twelve of sixteen) overall this year.

Their offense’s collective .279 wOBA is tied with the Chicago White Sox for the worst mark in all of baseball, their .322 slugging percentage hands down the lowest among all 30 MLB clubs. They’ve clubbed just 33 dingers - only the Kansas City Royals (30) have fewer - and their .104 ISO is, as you’d expect at this point of the paragraph, the worst in all Major League Baseball.

Cincinnati is missing Pittsburgh’s best starter, and the Pirates offense has been abysmal overall. If that’s not a recipe for putting the screws to a division rival while riding a heater I do not know what is, but that’s clearly the expectation for this Reds club as they once again look to climb out of the 4.5 game hole they’ve put themselves in within the division and chase, in earnest, both the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals this year.

Perhaps the lone problem facing the Reds in this series is that Pittsburgh will be sending a pair of LHPs out as starters. That means the white-hot Will Benson will either a) be on the bench or b) up against his nemeses while trying to prolong his excellent run of form. To date, Reds batters collectively own just a 79 wRC+ against LHP this season (20th overall), so that’s not exactly to their advantage.

Still, these are precisely the kinds of series good clubs must win, which is the same thing that got said when the Reds dropped the series to the White Sox just last week. Hopefully this won’t be a lesson learned post facto.

The Cincinnati Reds still can’t hit left-handed pitching

Arizona Diamondbacks v Cincinnati Reds

Will they ever address that issue?

There is a train of thought that suggests that if your team either can’t - or won’t - go out and spend big on position players who can really hit, it can find a way to build a platoon to mimic said production. After all, players who can truly mash against both lefties and righties are few and far between, rarely reach free agency at all, and cost a pretty penny when they ever do.

Even approaching the ability to mash both handed pitching at all equally earns players a giant payday, as the right-handed swinging Teoscar Hernandez (.808 OPS vs. RHP, .931 OPS vs. LHP in 2024) showed just last winter. His price skyrocketed out of where the Reds traditionally spend (or don’t), and as the dust settled on the outfield bat market Cincinnati flopped over $5 million to sign Austin Hays and mostly called their day done.

The odd thing is, though, that as the Reds have eschewed chasing the big-ticket outfield bats of late, they’ve also opted against rounding out the short-side of the platoons they’d otherwise be, in theory, trying to create to replicate production. They’ve held tight to Jake Fraley and Will Benson, for instance, despite both being pretty clearly best designed to only face LHP at this point of their careers. They went out and got Gavin Lux despite an infield glut, though his bat, too, continues to look like it’s only worth putting in the lineup to face righties - and he’s been shoveled into the outfield mix regularly, too.

Meanwhile the likes of Stuart Fairchild and Nick Senzel, for various reasons, have been jettisoned from the organization altogether despite being two of the precious few Reds who’ve put together seasons of cromulent (or better!) production against southpaws.

The Reds as a whole have struggled against LHP for years now. Dating back to the start of the 2022 season, they own just a 92 wRC+ against southpaws, a mark that has only been worsted by five clubs (a list that predictably includes the Colorado Rockies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins, and Chicago White Sox). Since the start of 2024 that number dips to a meager 82, worsted only by the Sox, Rockies, Marlins, and Kansas City Royals. While league-wide production against southpaws this year has fallen totally off a cliff, the Reds do technically rank tied for 20th against LHP by wRC+, though that number has still fallen down to just 78 so far in 2025.

Given that the infield options, when healthy are largely set, it’s the outfield where the frustration against southpaws becomes the hardest to sort out.

Hays, to his credit, came to the Reds as a player who probably was best suited to sit a bit more often against RHP and be a resident clubber of LHP, and he’s done that in an incredibly small sample this season (14 PA, 258 wRC+). Tyler Stephenson has stepped right into his role of mashing LHP since his return (15 PA, 244 wRC+). The other three Reds who actually have wRC+ above the league-average of 100, however, are Jake Fraley (in a meager 5 PA), Austin Wynns (who never plays anymore), and the inimitable Santiago Espinal (128 wRC+, thank god).

It’s enough to wonder just how the Reds would line up against a lefty starter if, in theory, they make it to August and are pushing for a playoff spot. Hays would occupy a corner outfield spot, for sure, but who else would they really want to have out there? The positionless Spencer Steer should theoretically be in another corner spot, but he’s been outmatched by lefties for a while now (35 wRC+ in 43 PA in 2025, 88 wRC+ in 172 PA in 2024).

Is it now canon that Espinal plays in left against lefties to keep his bat in the lineup? That would turn 3B over to the likes of Noelvi Marte (73 wRC+ in 26 PA in 2025, 61 wRC+ in 45 PA in 2024) or Jeimer Candelario (71 wRC+ in 24 PA in 2025, 80 wRC+ in 147 PA in 2024). Even if you assume the 2024 version of Marte was an aberration, it’s hard to simply bank on a massive turnaround for him in the second half of 2025 after he comes back from the oblique injury that shut him down in early May.

Is that guy Rece Hinds? He’s certainly hit LHP better than RHP throughout a lot of his minor league career, though his streakiness suggests he’s a guy who might only mash lefties better than righties if he’s playing every single day to be in form - sitting against righties only to face lefties here and there may not be the best route to get the most out of his powerful bat.

With Fairchild and Senzel long gone, the go-to option in CF has become TJ Friedl by default. Friedl, to his credit, has been just about as damn good as he could be overall in 2025 after an injury-riddled 2024, and as recently as 2023 actually hit lefties better (.962 OPS vs. .785 OPS) than righties. That did feature an absurdly high .425 BABIP against southpaws that season, however, and things have fallen back into a more typical platoon split for TJ in 2025 (64 wRC+ in 48 PA vs. LHP, 120 wRC+ in 151 PA vs. RHP).

The Reds did just swing a deal to pick up Connor Joe from the San Diego Padres, and he has carved out a decent career over the last half-dozen years while showing both patience and a proclivity to hit lefties a bit better than righties. That’s a good floor, in theory, though Joe has logged a grand total of 1 (one) PA so far against lefties despite infield/outfield positional versatility. Even at the highest possible end of expectations for him as a platoon partner, that’s hardly the greatest option out there.

Long story, I know, but it’s looking more and more like the Reds could stand to find a player out there somewhere who has made his name smashing lefties. That’s true even with a slew of right-handed bats on the IL who figure to make it back at some point soon in Marte, Candelario, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand because each of those guys are either infielders-only are shouldn’t put on a glove at all. The upper minors, this side of Sal Stewart, don’t really have a bat ready to take on that role, either, and Sal’s no outfielder by trade, too.

A classic lefty-mashing corner outfield option, that’s what could well help unlock this offense even further. It’s been a minute since they’ve had that prototype, after all.

Cincinnati Reds bats stymied again in 3-1 loss to Pirates

Cincinnati Reds v. Pittsburgh Pirates

Photo by Joshua Veon/MLB Photos via Getty Images

Oof.

The struggles of the Cincinnati Reds against left-handed pitching had been accounted long before lefty Bailey Falter flummoxed them through 7 scoreless frames in yesterday’s shutout loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. With lefty Andrew Heaney scheduled to be on the bump for the Pirates in Thursday’s series finale, there wasn’t a whole lot of optimism about the Reds chances for salvaging this series victory.

There shouldn’t have been. Heading into a crucial early season matchup with the Chicago Cubs on Friday - with lefty Matthew Boyd slated to start the opener - it’s hard to muster a ton of optimism about anything the Reds try to do offensively at the moment.

Heaney held the futile Cincinnati offense to just a lone run in his 5.0 IP on Thursday, his bullpen mates helping stifle the Reds bats for the final 4.0 IP as Cincinnati fell 3-1 to drop the series against the Pirates. That’s the 17-33 Pirates, by the way, who look a lot like the now 15-34 Chicago White Sox who won a series against the Reds in GABP within the last week, too.

Today’s ineptitude by the offense of the Reds marked the 14th time already they’ve scored 1 (one) or fewer runs this season through just 51 games played. While the struggles against LHP have been easy to identify, that’s far from the only thing plaguing this offense at the moment. Since their 24-run outburst against the Baltimore Orioles (and several of their position players pitching) on April 20th, the Reds own just a 90 wRC+ overall (good for 24th among all teams in that span).

Were it not for the recent exploits of Will Benson, the entirety of this Reds offense would look horrendous right now, and Benson continues to ride pine when they’re facing left-handed starters (as he probably should). The simple truth right now is that what the Reds do have simply isn’t getting the job done effectively enough with bats in hand, with the big pieces expected to shoulder the offensive load on this roster all seemingly struggling at exactly the same time.

At the time of writing this, the Reds not only find themselves once again on the wrong side of .500 at 25-26, but also 5 full games back of the Cubs heading into Thursday’s day off. Then, they’re smacked with a run of games that features a pair of 3-game series against the Cubs sandwiching a trip to Kansas City, with each of the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, and Minnesota Twins set to follow over the next four weeks.

The Reds are entering the crux of their 2025 schedule, and are entering it swinging the wettest noodles of the year so far.

Reds option Lyon Richardson, send Christian Encarnacion-Strand out on rehab assignment

Cincinnati Reds v. Pittsburgh Pirates

Off-day moves ahead of the upcoming Cubs series.

Lyon Richardson has looked fully removed (and re-established) in 2025, finally, after overcoming the Tommy John surgery that cost him all of the 2022 season. His ‘stuff’ recovered much quicker, as he’s pitched his way onto the Cincinnati Reds roster in each year since, but it looks sharper, and much more precise already this season.

He’s allowed just 2 ER in 13.2 IP so far at the big league level in 2025, and he’s shown multiple times already that the stuff matches the numbers. In other words, nothing about his success this year has looked flukish or BABIP-lucky. He is, quite simply, one of the better looking relievers the Reds have been able to turn to this season.

So, it’s frustrating to see him optioned to AAA again, as he was earlier on Thursday. The reality is, though, that he pitched on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday and - unlike so many of his bullpen brethren - has minor league options remaining. That made him the unfortunately roster casualty as the Reds needed to open up a roster spot for ace Hunter Greene, who will be activated to start Friday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs.

The #Reds optioned to Triple-A Louisville RHP Lyon Richardson (post-game 5/21) and placed on rehab assignment at ACL Reds IF Christian Encarnacion-Strand.

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) May 22, 2025

We’ll see Lyon back on the Reds roster soon, undoubtedly. It’s still just a bummer that the numbers crunch made his options so important at this juncture.

As for the other news relayed by the Reds on Thursday, Christian Encarnacion-Strand is heading to Arizona to begin honkin’ homers on rehab with the ACL Reds. He last played on April 16th and has been on the injured list with back problems ever since, a horrid situation given how lost his 2024 season was due to a wrist injury.

Here’s some reality, too - since the start of the 2024, there have been 425 players who have logged at least 180 PA at the big league level. Only one - Martin Maldonado - has a worse wRC+ than CES in that span (22 to CES’ 29). So, there’s obviously still hope that when right CES can step right into this Reds lineup and provide the kind of thump they so desperately need, but the plain facts are that he’s not done that in a really, really long time now.

It’s to the point where I hope he ends up mashing in a sustained way in his progression through the minors before being rushed immediately back to the Reds. Let him find his way at AAA (when he gets there) before ushering him back as something of a hopeful savior to this sputtering roster.

Cincinnati Reds host Chicago Cubs in NL Central showdown

Cincinnati Reds v Chicago Cubs

The first place Baby Bears come to GABP!

The last two offseasons have seen the Chicago Cubs press on the gas pedal harder than they had since rebuilding from the core that led them to their 2016 World Series title.

They sought Craig Counsell to be their manager despite him managing their division rivals in Milwaukee. Then, they swung a deal to land superstar Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros despite his time before reaching free agency dwindling, a sign they’re either going for it hard in 2025 while they have him (or are planning to throw gobs of cash his way for an extension).

(Or, both.)

The results so far in 2025 have been spot on. The Cubs sit 30-20 and in first place in the National League Central, 5.5 games ahead of the sputtering Cincinnati Reds. They’re being powered by Tucker as well as breakout star Pete Crow-Armstrong, a former 1st round pick of the New York Mets who the Cubs pried away in the deal that sent out former star Javier Baez four years ago.

They’ve even managed to take the body blow of losing ace Justin Steele to Tommy John surgery, the lefty having finished fifth in NL Cy Young Award voting in 2023 and having fired 308.0 IP of excellent 136 ERA+ ball across 2023-2024. He’ll obviously miss the remainder of the 2025 season, but Shota Imanaga has emerged as a staff leader in his own right as Chicago’s rotation evolves.

The Reds will dodge Imanaga in this upcoming series, fortunately, but they’ll get smacked immediately with another LHP in Matthew Boyd in the series opener. We’ve documented the Reds struggles against LHP often this year, so hopefully that’s something that can begin to change as early as Friday evening.

(Speaking of which, the Cubs are currently the second-best club by wOBA against LHP (.358) this season, and they’re set to face a pair of lefty starters rolled out by the Reds this series.)

Whether or not the Reds can bust out of their offensive slump and take it to their division rivals in a home series remains to be seen, though the inevitable proliferation of blue jerseys in the stands all weekend might make them hit like it’s a road game. After all, the Reds have posted just a .311 wOBA (21st) and 84 wRC+ (t-23rd) in home games so far this season.

If you’re of the opinion that the 2025 Reds are actually committed to a 162 game chance at making the postseason, well, then this series really isn’t too much more important than any other. If, however, you’re of the opinion that this spendthrift club is going to observe this club until the trade deadline and then decide if they’ll sell off any expensive pieces if they aren’t well positioned, then this series takes on a much, much bigger importance.

Reds/Cubs for the first time in 2025 coming your way!
