Quick Hits: The Cat’s Meow, Quinn Hughes, Burgers off the Menu

As I am writing this, the Red Wings have won all but two games in the month of December. In the same month last season, the Wings had lost five games to this point. That’s what we call progress, right? Detroit finally shook off the “Islanders demon” last night with a 3-2 win on home ice. Hooray! No season sweep! A lot of the focus is on Alex DeBrincat, and for good reason. He’s scored 20…

Quick Hits: Dynamic Defense Paying Dividends

Happy Simon Edvinsson Day in America to all who celebrate! No seriously, though. What a way to bounce back after Saturday’s ugly loss against the Hurricanes. The Toronto Maple Leafs gave the Red Wings a lot to handle on Sunday. The first period was a defensive battle before Matthew Knies opened the scoring in the middle frame. Moritz Seider would have the equalizer with less than a minute…

lmao okay look i gotta be honest here - as a die hard sabres fan it physically pains me to say anything nice about detroit but credit where credit is due, you guys are actually looking pretty solid this year

that edvinsson-seider pairing is absolutely NASTY and i hate it. like genuinely hate it because we gotta play you guys and those two are gonna be terrorizing the atlantic for the next decade. the fact seider is setting franchise records and edvinsson is finally showing why he was such a high pick... yeah thats a problem for the rest of us

and debrincat hitting 20 goals already?? dude found his game again after that rough stretch in ottawa. sometimes guys just need the right situation and clearly detroit is working for him

the gibson situation is interesting though. when hes on hes ON but the inconsistency is real. guess thats what happens when a guy spent years getting absolutely shelled in anaheim - hard to know what youre actually getting

but hey at least youre not buffalo right?? haha... ha... *cries in sabres*

seriously though the wings being competitive again is good for the sport even if it makes my life harder. that thanksgiving benchmark article was spot on - showing fight matters and this team clearly has some grit now

what do you guys think the realistic ceiling is this year? wild card? actually competing for a division spot?

Quick Hits: Patrick Kane Gets 500th Goal in Detroit

It was a tough start to 2026 for the Red Wings due to back-to-back losses against Pittsburgh, but the vibes have been reversed after back-to-back wins against Ottawa and Vancouver, respectively. Okay, so Vancouver is not a good team and Ottawa is last in the Atlantic. You can only play who is on your schedule, and Detroit is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. It’s January, so I’ll take it.

Hey, appreciate the kind words even if they're coming through gritted teeth, haha. Always respect when a rival fan can acknowledge what's happening on the ice.

You're spot on about the Seider-Edvinsson pairing. That Edvinsson game against Toronto where he tied it late was something else - the kid is finally putting it all together and you can see why Detroit was so patient with his development. Having two guys like that who can move the puck and play physical when needed is such a luxury. Franchise record for Seider in assists is pretty wild when you think about the defensemen who've played here over the years.

DeBrincat hitting 20 before January really does feel like validation for that trade. Sometimes the fit just matters more than raw talent, and he seems comfortable in this system. The Cat's been clutch.

Gibson is the wildcard for sure. That 39-save shutout showed what he's capable of when he's locked in, but you're right that years of being hung out to dry in Anaheim probably messed with consistency. If he can stay steady, this team's ceiling goes up considerably.

As for realistic expectations... I'd say wild card is the floor if they keep playing like this. 7-2-1 in the last 10 is no joke. Division spot feels ambitious given how stacked the Atlantic is, but stranger things have happened. The fact that they finally beat the Islanders and broke that demon tells me this group has some mental toughness the previous iterations lacked.

And hey, Buffalo's time will come eventually. Probably. Maybe. Good luck with that.

Red Wings Give Ben Chiarot a Three-Year Extension

You will get three more years of Ben Chiarot, and you are gonna like it!!!! The Red Wings announced a somewhat unexpected contract extension Tuesday morning. Defenseman Ben Chiarot is staying put in Detroit after signing a three-year deal that carries a $3.85 million cap hit. The new deal expires in 2029, when Chiarot is 38 years old. I say the deal was somewhat unexpected because I…
