NHL Free Agency Opens Today

The 2025 NHL free agency cycle is about to begin — later today at noon, NHL teams will “begin” their bids for unrestricted free agents. Problem is, all of the big names are off the list! The Red Wings took care of some pending free agents on Monday — Patrick Kane and Jonatan Berggren are back on one-year deals, while Albert Johansson earned himself a two-year extension.

Red Wings Sign Mason Appleton to Two-Year Deal

The Red Wings have signed another guy. The team announced Wednesday evening that forward Mason Appleton has signed a two-year contract at $2.9 million AAV. Appleton has played seven seasons in the NHL — 400 games on the nose. Most of them with the Winnipeg Jets. Appleton, a former MSU Spartan, scored 22 points (10-12–22) in 71 games this past season. The season before, he had a career…

Red Wings Sign Elmer Soderblom to a Two-Year Deal

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has completed his offseason tasks as it relates to restricted free agents. On Wednesday, the team announced that forward Elmer Soderblom has a signed a two-year deal with an AAV of $1.125 million. Soderblom, a sixth round pick in 2019, is a towering net-front presence that has soft hands that I liken to Tomas Holmstrom. The six-foot-eight forward has 19 points in 47…

Quick Hits: Red Wings Needs Remain After Day 1 of Free Agency

Happy Wednesday and welcome to day two of NHL free agency. As I noted in my column last night, Detroit added some value/depth on the cheap yesterday. Bad news is that most of the big names are signed elsewhere, but a few interesting names are still on the market. Will we get any movement from Detroit today? Your guess is as good as mine. Detroit still has over $15 million in cap space…

Red Wings Add Depth, Still Maintain Buying Power

Maybe not the “splash” that most wanted see on day one of NHL free agency, but the Red Wings picked up a few potentially valuable players at bargain-bin prices on Tuesday. The biggest move was signing veteran forward James van Riemsdyk to a one-year deal for a measly $1 million. JVR is 36 years old, great pedigree, and one of the better net-front players in the NHL. The value is excellent for…

Red Wings Bring Back Johansson, Berggren

The Red Wings announced Monday that restricted free agent defenseman Albert Johansson and forward Jonatan Berggren have signed new extensions. Johansson, who had a fabulous rookie season, earned himself a two-year deal with $1.125 AAV. Berggren is back on a one-year contract paying him $1.825 million. Albert Johansson was a stud for the Red Wings when they needed him most this past season.

Red Wings Trade Vladimir Tarasenko to Wild

The writing has been on the wall for some time now, and the hammer has finally dropped. Vladimir Tarasenko’s time in Detroit is over. The team announced on social media that the Russian winger has been traded to Minnesota in exchange for future considerations. No salary was retained in this deal, so this is a pure cap dump for Detroit to the tune of some $4.75 million.

Quick Hits: Looking Back on Red Wings Free Agency

Happy Monday, friends. We’re entering the “dead” part of the NHL offseason – Meaning there simply won’t be much news to talk about. We have a couple of items to get caught up on, so we’ll keep it brief today. Before we get into this, I know that a large portion of the fanbase is a little, well, angry to say the least. Please don’t take it out on each other. Keep our disagreements civil and…

Hey there, gang! Quite a bit to talk about today across the NHL and in Red Wings world. Let’s get into it. Been a tough week to be a fan of Michigan State Spartans hockey, eh? First, consensus 1st overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft Gavin McKenna committed to Penn State. The top prospect was down to Penn State and Michigan State as the final two teams. Penn State shelled out an NIL deal worth…

Happy Friday, my dear friends. We’ve got a couple items to talk about before we break for the weekend. Who knows, maybe the weekend will bring some headlines for us. After a breakout season in the NHL, Marco Kasper was named the 2024-2025 Red Wings Rookie of the Year. This award is given by the Detroit sports media, which can certainly be unforgiving. It’s good to see Kasper get the…
