Quick Hits: The Playoff Race Edition

Red Wings Rumblings Gutsy win by the Red Wings last night in Minnesota. Down 2-0 going into the second period, the Wings rumbled back for a 3-2 win thanks to Simon Edvinsson’s thundering slapshot(s) that brought in two goals, including the game-winner. I’m sure we were all feeling the anxiety of holding a one-goal lead late in the game, but Detroit shut it down and took care of business.

Andrew Copp Out For Season After Surgery

The Red Wings provided an update on Andrew Copp Tuesday, after the veteran forward left Saturday’s game against Anaheim with an upper-body injury. The Wings say that Copp had successful surgery to repair his left pectoral tendon, and that he will miss the remainder of the season. The expected recovery time for this injury is 4-6 months. You can rewatch the play where Copp got injured here.

Game Day Updates: Blue Jackets vs Red Wings

Kind of a big game tonight for both teams, though not necessarily a must-win for the Red Wings. The Blue Jackets are currently the second wild card team in the East, two points back from Detroit. It’s important for the Wings to keep bringing in points, but with Tampa has won six straight games and the space between that first wild card spot in the East and the third spot in the Atlantic won’t seem…

Quick Hits: The Center Search Edition

Red Wings Rumblings Ugh, that was an ugly loss to the Blue Jackets Thursday night at LCA. Total slopfest where it was clear that some of the big role players for the Red Wings were on cruise control, or not even cruising at all. Head coach Todd McLellan didn’t mince words when talking about the performance postgame. Captain Dylan Larkin was part of that.. Here’s what coach had to say from…

Quick Hits: The Points Matter Edition

Red Wings Rumblings It wasn’t pretty, but the Red Wings returned to action over the weekend after a two-week break and have three points to show for it. Saturday’s loss stung pretty bad, but getting the point was a success in my eyes. Detroit played an overall pretty strong game against Anaheim but you started to see some of those bad tendencies we saw before Todd McLellan arrived.

NHL Stadium Series Updates: Red Wings vs Blue Jackets

It’s on at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The Red Wings are looking for a “get even” tonight in front of some 90-thousand spectators. It was this past Thursday night that the Blue Jackets whipped the Wings in their own barn. Both teams are swinging at each other in the wild card, so tonight’s game is high stakes. Should make for appointment viewing. After underwhelming performances from key…

People Aren’t Happy with ESPN’s NHL Stadium Series Coverage

Let’s not mince words — ESPN boned the NHL tonight. The 2024 NHL Stadium Series broadcast on ESPN was delayed due to Alabama-Tennessee college basketball game. The game started on alternative channels like ESPN News and streaming on ESPN+, but the timeline was messy. That means one of the NHL’s premium events (and the pre-game visuals that go along with it) was pre-empted by something else.

Quick Hits: The NHL Trade Deadline Approaches

Red Wings Rumblings Pretty frustrating weekend for Red Wings hockey, depending on who you ask. I didn’t get to attend the Stadium Series game in Columbus, but I imagine people who went had a good time, despite the loss. Not the case for those who watched at home — in addition to a gutting loss thanks to some questionable officiating, the coverage on ESPN for the Red Wings-Blue Jackets game at…

The Latest on Yzerman’s NHL Trade Deadline Approach

With the NHL Trade Deadline set for Friday at 3:00 PM ET, a lot of eyes are on Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. The Wings are fresh off back-to-back regulation losses against the Blue Jackets – but still hold that second wild card spot in the East. Detroit has lost some important players recently, and that has many thinking that GMSY will seek out depth in the trade market. With Andrew Copp out…

Red Wings’ Losing Skid at Three after 2-1 Loss to ‘Canes

The Detroit Red Wings fell 2-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night, stretching their losing streak to three games which, courtesy of a tiebreaker, slides the Red Wings outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture for now. It was a frustrating night for the Red Wings in a game where the score doesn’t quite tell the whole story. They started fairly strong and traded chances with…

Quick Hits: The Tough Decisions Edition

Red Wings Rumblings The Red Wings are on a three-game losing streak after last night’s 2-1 loss against Carolina, and now Detroit finds itself on the outside of the playoff bubble, but still not out of the race. The Ranger are holding the second wild card spot in the East with 66 points (the same as Detroit) in 61 games (also the same as Detroit). Can’t say I really liked anything…

Red Wings Acquire Pick in Three-Team Trade with Tampa, Seattle

The Red Wings got involved in the trade frenzy Wednesday afternoon, but not in the way everyone was expecting. Detroit helped complete a three-team deal that sends forwards Yanni Gourde and Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Tampa Bay Lightning and a haul of picks to the Seattle Kraken. Here’s how the deal shakes out: To Tampa: Bjorkstrand, Gourde, 2026 5th round pick, D Kyle Aucoin (unsigned Red…

Blue Jackets Claim Christian Fischer off Waivers

Christian Fischer will not be reporting to the Grand Rapids Griffins after he was placed on waivers by the Red Wings Wednesday. The forward and Michigan-native was claimed off waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Fischer, a depth player for Detroit, found himself as the odd-man out once the Wings decided to call up forward Carter Mazur from the Griffins. Fischer was a serviceable bottom-line…

Red Wings Recall Forward Carter Mazur from Griffins

The Detroit Red Wings have made it official — Jackson native Carter Mazur is on his way from Grand Rapids to Detroit to make his NHL debut. The 22-year-old winger was a third-round pick for Steve Yzerman in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. To make room for Mazur on the roster, Detroit placed forward Christian Fischer on waivers yesterday. We’ll learn if he cleared waivers later this afternoon.

Red Wings Acquire Petr Mrazek, Craig Smith from Blackhawks

Steve Yzerman made himself a trade before the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. He got into business with the Chicago Blackhawks, acquiring an old friend in goaltender Petr Mrazek along with Craig Smith, a veteran center who is nearing 1000 career NHL games. Joe Veleno is on his way to Chicago. This was first reported by The Athletic’s Chris Johntston. The team has made the trade official.

Game Day Updates: Red Wings at Capitals

The trade deadline has come and gone and as we’ve covered here, it was fairly quiet for the Red Wings, who are gearing up for a road game against the Washington Capitals tonight. Here’s my quick take, sure to go over well: the sky is not falling. The biggest names moved — Mikko Rantanen and Brad Marchand — had some say in where they ended up. Players like that aren’t coming here until we’re…

2025 NHL Trade Tracker: Red Wings Have Needs in Seller’s Market

The NHL Trade Deadline is set for 3:00 PM ET today and we’re already seeing the big names come off the list. Given the returns we’ve seen on some trades, it’s pretty clear that it is a seller’s market. With inflated prices for players who aren’t carrying much term, we can assume that Steve Yzerman is content with quietly sitting on the sidelines this year. Perhaps a sound strategy given the…

Quick Hits: NHL Trade Deadline Day

Good news, everyone! We made it to Trade Deadline day! Bad news, everyone! The Red Wings have gone cold on us. Yep, the Wings are on a four-game skid after last night’s loss to Utah at Little Caesars Arena. I’m not even going to get into what happened in this game because it will do nothing but piss me off. Goaltending, defense, offense… It’s all unacceptable. So now Steve Yzerman has a…

Game Day Updates: Red Wings vs. Hurricanes

After two tough losses to the Columbus Blue Jackets and just days before the NHL’s trade deadline, the Detroit Red Wings host a tough one tonight with the Carolina Hurricanes in town. Trade chatter has picked up across the league with a handful of deals completed over the last few days. To no one’s surprise, there is not much word leaking out of Detroit, but tonight’s opponent, Carolina…

Quick Hits: The Post-Trade Deadline Grind

The Red Wings are losers of five in a row with 19 games left on the schedule. Technically Detroit is still in the mix for a wild card spot, but the margin of error is razor-thin at this point. Each and every game is “important” this time of year — especially for a team who technically bought assets at the trade deadline. Let’s talk about that — the trade deadline. I feel we’ve all had enough…
