Quick Hits: Red Wings Let The Dust Settle

Red Wings Rumblings Hopefully the dust has settled among Red Wings fans after Steve Yzerman and Todd McLellan’s season-ending press conference earlier this week. You know my rule — no fan policing. If you’re pissed off and seeing red (not in a good way), I understand. I’ll remind you that it’s going to be a long offseason with a lot on the table. Max Bultman recently had an article…

Quick Hits: NHL Draft Lottery Tonight, Red Wings Chances

Happy NHL Draft Lottery day to all who celebrate! (getting sick of saying this) Tonight, we’ll find out the draft order for picks 1-15. ESPN will broadcast the lottery at 7 PM ET, and it will be a LIVE drawing this time around. What that means is instead of watching a countdown from 16 to 1 after the lottery balls are drawn behind the curtains, we’ll watch live as the lottery balls are drawn.

Red Wings Get Pick No. 13 in 2025 NHL Draft

In a somewhat confusing fashion, the NHL revealed it’s lottery picks for the 2025 Draft live on ESPN this evening. The Red Wings will have the 13th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The odds were not in Detroit’s favor, obviously. Here were their chances via Tankathon: Pick no. 2: 5.1% chance Pick no. 3: 0.1% chance Pick no. 4: 0.1% chance Pick no. 12: 85.7% chance Pick no. 13: 8.9%

Quick Hits: Catching Up In Red Wings World

Welcome to the season of no news and clickbait articles! Been quiet around WIIM World as of late, and that’s no accident. I’ve been taking some time off of the blogosphere because there’s simply not much to talk about right now. That will obviously change as we get closer to the NHL Draft and free agency. It’s down to four teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I caught some of game seven…

Quick Hits: Red Wings’ Buchelnikov Nearing a Big Decision?

Howdy, partners. The dusty trails of the NHL offseason (for all teams but two at this point) are starting to bother my allergies, and it’s only June. Yeehaw! As you have probably noticed, it’s quiet around these parts. We’re still here, but admin has been enjoying the free time and getting caught up on stuff outside of hockey fandom. We do have some items to discuss today…

Red Wings Sign Jesse Kiiskinen to Entry-Level Deal

Hey there, friends. We’ve got some Red Wings-related news to banter about! The Wings announced Tuesday afternoon that forward prospect Jesse Kiiskinen has signed his three-year entry-level deal. Kiiskinen, who turns 20 in August, spent last season with HPK in Finland’s top league. Kiiskinen had a breakout year, leading his team in assists and points while tied for third in goal-scoring.

Lalonde Lands in Toronto

Another former Red Wings head coach has found himself a new job — the Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that the team has hired Derek Lalonde as an assistant coach. Lalonde coached 198 games for the Red Wings after his hiring almost three years ago. He had a record of 89-86-23 in that span. Lalonde was canned in Detroit after a miserable start to the 24-25 regular season.

Quick Hits: A New Red Wings Coaching Vacancy

Happy Friday, friends! Game two of the Stanley Cup Final is tonight, after Edmonton took game one in OT on Wednesday. Seems like this series could be a good one, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s in store for tonight. In Red Wings world, we have a shakeup on the coaching staff. Max Bultman reported that assistant coach Jay Varady is joining Rick Tocchet’s staff in Philadelphia.

Quick Hits: Red Wings Go Goalie Shopping

Hello, Wingnuts! Another day closer to the actual offseason! The Red Wings made a move on Tuesday — the team announced it has signed goaltender Michal Postava to a two-year ELC. Postava, who has been playing in his homeland Czechia, is coming off a huge season in the country’s top league. The 23-year-old netminder posted a record of 23-18-0 in the regular season, backed up by a .921 SV% and 2.

Quick Hits: Trade Rumors, Red Wings Headed to Olympics

Hello, friends! It is certainly a Monday. The Edmonton Oilers are up against a wall in the Stanley Cup Final, Florida leading 3-2 with game six in Sunrise tomorrow night. I sure hope the Oilers can find something in themselves to take this series to seven games, but I’ll admit I am not as invested in the SCF this year. In Red Wings world, some of the team’s top players are getting the call…

Quick Hits: Busy Week Ahead for the Red Wings, NHL

Happy Monday, Red Wings fans. Hopefully you’re all staying cool during this brutal stretch of heat we’re having here in Michigan and across the US. We don’t have any actual news to talk about, in fact, we have the exact opposite to talk about. Everyone seems to have taken a bite at what turned out to be some pretty egregious clickbait from Bob Duff. Duff had cited a report from Elliotte…

Who Should the Red Wings Target at the 2025 NHL Draft?

The season of hope and optimism is upon us, with the Stanley Cup Final in the rearview and the 2025 NHL Draft slated for this Friday (round 1) and Saturday (rounds 2-7), held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Having celebrated annual tradition of bad luck in the draft lottery, the Red Wings are slated to pick 13th in the first round. They have nine total picks, owning their original pick…

Red Wings Acquire Goaltender John Gibson from Ducks

Steve Yzerman said he wanted to shore up his goaltending in the offseason. He got that started on day two of the 2025 NHL Draft by trading Petr Mrazek and a couple of draft picks, per Elliotte Friedman. The Red Wings made the trade official at 1:00 PM ET. It’s Gibson for Mrazek, a 2027 2nd round pick and a 2026 4th round pick. Gibson, who is 31 years old, is in year seven of eight of his…

2025 NHL Draft: Red Wings Bring in a Haul of Talent

Safe to say that day two of the 2025 NHL Draft was a success for Steve Yzerman. At the end of it all, Detroit addressed an important need by trading for goaltender John Gibson, and it didn’t take away any picks in this draft. The Red Wings got a little bit of everything in this draft — and from all over the map. Here’s our recap and brief analysis. Shoutout to EliteProspects for being such an…

2025 NHL Draft: Red Wings Select Eddie Genborg With 44th Pick

Make it back-to-back forward for Steve Yzerman in the 2025 NHL Draft’s first couple of rounds. The Red Wings selected RW Eddie Genborg out of Linkoping (SHL). Genborg played 28 games in the SHL as a 17-year-old this past season. The numbers aren’t gaudy — just a couple of goals, but there’s something to be said about having such a role at that age. A snippet from EliteProspects Scouting…

2025 NHL Draft: What the Red Wings Have for Day 2

Day one is in the books for the 2025 NHL Draft. It was a weird one. This new format where all of the GMs are away from the hosting venue is clunky at best. The whole event on Friday night took far too long. Good news is that day two always goes fairly quickly. How to Watch Day 2 of the 2025 NHL Draft Time: 12:00 PM ET TV: NHL Network Stream: ESPN+ Solid Night for Detroit I know…

Red Wings Sign Patrick Kane to One-Year Deal

The Red Wings announced on the eve of free agency that it has come to terms with UFA forward Patrick Kane on a one-year deal. Kane’s cap hit is $3 million, but there are a ton of bonuses baked into the deal to get him more money. The way bonuses count against the cap involves some variables. At the end of the day, it’s hardly noticeable for a team that manages its cap space well.
