Dylan Cease continues to struggle, Padres lose

Arizona Diamondbacks v San Diego Padres

San Diego shutdown by Brandon Pfaadt, finishes with four hits

The San Diego Padres needed their de facto ace Dylan Cease to deliver a performance similar to the one provided by rotation mate Nick Pivetta on Tuesday night. Cease failed to even come close to matching the performance and surrendered six runs to the Arizona Diamondbacks and watched them cruise to an 8-2 win at Petco Park, Wednesday.

Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove started the 2025 season on the IL and Cease and Michael King were expected to become 1A and 1B in the Padres rotation. Then King made his way to the IL and Cease was expected to be the top pitcher in the San Diego rotation.

To this point in the season, based on his performances, Cease has not assumed the role of “Ace” of the Padres staff. A good performance against the Diamondbacks would have gone a long way on multiple fronts to show he was ready to take that title.

Cease, however, allowed solo home runs in the third and fourth innings, giving Arizona a 2-0 lead, heading into the top of the fifth. That’s the inning when the night went from bad to worse as the Diamondbacks added for runs to their total on the strength of a Geraldo Perdomo grand slam to make the score, 6-0.

Cease allowed a one-out walk to James McCann and a single to Alek Thomas before he got Corbin Carroll to strikeout to give him two outs in the frame. With McCann and Thomas on, Cease walked Ketel Marte to load the bases and Perdomo delivered the difference-making swing.

San Diego was able to get a run on a Bryce Johnson RBI-groundout in the bottom of the fifth to score Xander Bogaerts and make the score, 6-1. The Padres added a second run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Gavin Sheets led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit to, 6-2.

That was all the scoring for San Diego and the Padres watched as the Diamondbacks added a run on an RBI-groundout in the top of the eighth and a solo home run by Carroll in the top of the ninth to put Arizona up, 8-2.

Cease finished the night with six innings pitched. He allowed six runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. He allowed three home runs on the night.

Pfaadt, meanwhile, completed eight innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He allowed one home run on the solo shot by Sheets in the seventh.

The San Diego offense did not provide much support for Cease and the rest of the Padres pitching staff. San Diego managed just four hits in 31 at-bats and the hits were spread over four different Padres.

San Diego finishes the series with Arizona, Thursday at 6:40 p.m.

Padres Michael King’s return seen as significant trade deadline addition

Los Angeles Angels v San Diego Padres

The Friars’ starting rotation is missing their star pitcher

The San Diego Padres did some roster maneuvering to bring Yu Darvish back on the 40-man roster and start the opening game of a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team transferred Michael King to the 60-day injured list, but the move did not change his timeline to return to the roster this season.

No confirmation on King’s return date

King was scratched from a May 24 start after experiencing a knot in his right shoulder. Padres manager Mike Shildt thought his star pitcher might have slept wrong on his arm. However, the pain kept lingering. Team doctors diagnosed the righthander with a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder.

There is no confirmed return date, but the Padres are cautiously optimistic that King could be back on the mound in August. It is not wrong to envision his return as a significant trade deadline addition.

Shildt confirmed King would be out indefinitely to MLB.com Padres writer AJ Cassavell

“I think that’s pretty accurate. I don’t think we can begin to put a date on it. … As we all know, the further away he is from it, the longer it takes to get back.”

However, King threw a bullpen today and he seems happy about it.

Michael King threw all his pitches and got up to 91 mph in his bullpen today. I think it's safe to say he REALLY wants to get back ASAP

— Talking Friars (@TalkingFriars) July 11, 2025

King’s future is up in air

King was off to an outstanding start to the 2025 season. He posted a 4-2 record with a 2.59 ERA in 10 starts. His walk-to-strikeout ratio is impressive, as King walked only 7.6% of the batters he faced, while striking out 28.4% of them.

The unexpected injury has put a damper on his chances of receiving a big-money free agent contract this winter. A pinched nerve is a challenging condition to treat, as rest is often the most effective course of action for recovery. It might be best for King to exercise the mutual option in his current deal and play in San Diego next season. It allows him to add another season of quality pitching stats to his resume.

The mutual option is beneficial for the Friars as well. They cannot afford to lose one of their top starting pitchers, as it has been a patchwork effort following Nick Pivetta and Dylan Cease in the rotation. The mutual option allows them to keep the majority of their rotation intact for the 2026 season.

Padres must be cautious with his rehab

The Padres are taking baby steps in beginning King’s extensive rehab throwing program. His arm will need to be built back up. King has started throwing off a slope.

The next step is throwing 100% from a mound before live bullpen sessions and then progressing to rehab starts with one of the Friars’ minor league affiliates. His recovery days must be without pain and discomfort in the shoulder before the Friars would consider King a starting pitching option in a game.

It would not be a stretch to expect him to be a bit rusty once he returns to the majors. It will be hard at first to execute his two-strike pitches for swing-and-misses. The Friar Faithful must keep the faith that King’s command will return in short order without delay.

The Padres need reinforcements for their starting rotation in the second half of the season. A healthy King on the mound renews the hope that the team is poised to make a serious run to the postseason.

Padres drop final game against Phillies

San Diego heads into All-Star break at 52-44

The San Diego Padres elected to use David Morgan against the Philadelphia Phillies in the top of the eighth inning. Morgan replaced Adrian Morejon, who had just allowed a one-out double to Bryce Harper.

Morgan recorded a strikeout of Nick Castellanos, but fell behind J.T. Realmuto. The veteran catcher took advantage of the count being in his favor and lined a double into the left-center gap that allowed Harper to score to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead en route to a win at Petco Park, Sunday.

Philadelphia enjoyed a 1-0 lead throughout the contest. The run came in the top of the first inning after the San Diego defense committed two errors, with the second being a throwing error charged to Luis Arraez, with two outs in the inning, that allowed Bryce Harper to score, Bryson Stott to reach safely and the inning to continue.

The Padres needed six innings before they were able to break through and scratch a run off Philadelphia starting pitcher Christopher Sanchez. The Phillies starter worked 7 1/3 innings and did so on just 86 pitches.

Jackson Merrill came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with two on and no outs certainly looking to replicate his recent success at the plate. He elected to drop down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts to advance to third and second base respectively.

Jose Iglesias followed the unselfish at-bat by Merrill with a hard ground ball up the middle that deflected off the glove of Bryson Stott, who was playing in, and the ball rolled into center field. Machado came in to score and the Padres tied the game, 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Bogaerts advanced to third and Iglesias was satisfied with the RBI-single. Luis Campusano, who was making his return to the MLB lineup, failed to keep the momentum going in San Diego’s favor as he bounced into a ground ball double play to end the frame.

Nick Pivetta, who will not be one of the five players representing the Padres in the MLB All-Star Game, Tuesday but maybe should be, continued his solid 2025 campaign with another 6 2/3 innings pitched against the Phillies. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

MLB releases 2026 schedule

1242140018.jpg

Major League Baseball released the 2026 schedule and the season begins on Wednesday March 25 with a single Opening Night game between the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants in San Francisco. It is the earliest scheduled Opening Day in MLB history.

The San Diego Padres, and everyone else in MLB, begin on March 26.The Friars will open at home with a three-game series versus the Detroit Tigers followed by an off day and then another three-game series against the Giants before another off day. They then hit the road for three games in both Boston and Pittsburgh.

The April schedule then has the Padres playing Colorado twice (home and away) as well as the Mariners and Angels for a heavy American League opening to the season. They also have an April series against Arizona (in Mexico City) and the Cubs.

The heaviest part of the schedule hits after the All-Star break (Philadelphia hosts next season) with two 10-game roadtrips. One in July, right after the break, and one in September. They have 11 days straight at home in May with off days after the first series against the Dodgers and at the end of six games versus the A’s and Phillies. That is their longest stretch of days at home for the season.

Mark your calendars, besties 💛 pic.twitter.com/9jTBPPxOeC

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) August 26, 2025

As part of their schedule next season, the Padres and the Diamondbacks are slated to play a two-game series in Mexico City on April 25-26. Once again, Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú will host the event. This is a make-up of sorts for the planned series of 2020 that was cancelled during the Covid pandemic. The Padres also played in Mexico City in 2023 against the Giants. That series is followed by a home series against the Cubs and then they will have an off day before three more home games against the White Sox.

The regular season ends with a home series against Arizona with the final game on September 27. The Padres do play their division rivals during September with series against the Dodgers, Rockies, Dbacks and Giants during the month.

Poor fifth inning results in loss for Padres

gettyimages-2232110481.jpg

David Morgan was called on to pitch for the San Diego Padres after starter JP Sears completed just 3 2/3 innings against the Seattle Mariners. Morgan inherited a runner at third base with the game tied, 4-4.

Morgan recorded a strikeout of Victor Robles to end the fourth inning and keep the game tied. He returned to the mound in the bottom of the fifth and only recorded two outs before he was relieved by Wandy Peralta. Seattle scored five times in the inning, with all five runs being charged to Morgan, and the Padres dropped the first game of the series to the Mariners, 9-6 at T-Mobile Park, Monday.

Final: Mariners 9, Padres 6

For the first time since September 2021, the Padres hit four home runs in a game they lost. The Mariners clinch the Vedder Cup. Meanwhile, with the Dodgers winning big, the Padres seem destined to fall a game back in the NL West tonight.

— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) August 26, 2025

Sears surrendered the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after loading the bases to start the home half. Seattle loaded the bases with no outs after Sears allowed a single to Josh Naylor, a walk to Mitch Garver and a single to Jorge Polanco. That prompted a mound visit from San Diego Pitching Coach Ruben Niebla. Sears followed the visit by getting J.P. Crawford to bounce into a double play. However, Naylor scored from third and tied the game, 4-4.

Morgan got the final out of the fourth and returned to the mound for the fifth. He started the fifth like he ended the fourth, getting a strikeout of Randy Arozarena. He then hit Cal Raleigh and got Julio Rodriguez to bounce into a fielder’s choice with Raleigh getting thrown out at second.

With two outs in the frame, Morgan walked Eugenio Suarez and allowed a single to Josh Naylor, which allowed Rodriguez to score from second to give the Mariners a 5-4 lead. Morgan then walked Garver to load the bases for Polanco. Facing a 2-2 count, Polanco hit the ball into right field to score Suarez and Naylor to put Seattle up, 7-4.

Peralta came into the game attempting to strand Garver and Polanco. Instead, a flare off the bat of J.P. Crawford dropped between Ramon Laureano and a sliding Fernando Tatis Jr. in center field, allowing both runners to score to put the Marines ahead of the Padres, 9-4.

The Padres loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning, but Laureano struck out to end the threat. San Diego did add a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI-groundout from Luis Arraez to score Will Wagner and make the score 9-6, but the Padres ran out of outs before they could add on and they dropped their second game in as many days.

The game started with a home run frenzy. Sears surrendered a first-inning solo home run to Raleigh, which was his 50th home run of the season, to give Seattle a 1-0 lead.

Padres have a Jeremiah Estrada problem against the Dodgers

gettyimages-2230960952.jpg

San Diego Padres Jeremiah Estrada (Meg McLaughlin / The San Diego Union-Tribune via Getty Images)

For much of the 2025 season, San Diego Padres reliever Jeremiah Estrada has been brilliant coming out of the bullpen. He has pitched to a 3.19 ERA by striking out 84 batters in 59.1 innings pitched. Estrada has a strikeout rate of 34.9% this season. He allowed only 20 walks for an 8.4% walk rate, which is the lowest in his four-year major league career.

View Link

When called into a game, Estrada is usually in control, except when facing the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, the outings are brief after getting roughed up on the mound.

Estrada’s troubles with the Dodgers

In 13 career appearances, the right-hander is 0-3 with an 11.81 ERA against them. Estrada has allowed 17 hits in 10.2 innings pitched. The two Dodgers who have done the most damage are Teoscar Hernandez and Will Smith. Hernandez is 5-for-8 with two home runs and four RBIs in eight at-bats off Estrada. Smith is 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs in the same number of at-bats.

The numbers are not good, as he struggles to get ahead in counts and leaves too many pitches over the middle of the plate for Dodger batters to hit. Often, the results are punctuated by the long ball.

The Padres cannot afford to have a problem of this nature moving forward. The postseason is unpredictable, but the odds are good that these two teams will face one another at some point in October.

Padres need to hit the reset button

Estrada is not the first pitcher to struggle against a major league team. Facing the Dodgers is his kryptonite, as he is not a reliable option late in close games. The right move is giving him a reset.

The current makeup of the bullpen has enough depth that you can reintroduce him against the Dodgers in less stressful situations. A clean inning of work will ease the sting a bit. However, it will bring a huge sigh of relief from Friars skipper Mike Shildt.

You cannot handcuff your manager and have him be wary of using a reliever because of past struggles. The reality is the Padres need Estrada to find his footing against their main rival.

The Padres bullpen is the center of their fortunes. Estrada is a key component and can help the Friars clinch a postseason berth.

However, it is time for him to adopt a different approach against the Dodgers. Estrada has the pitching repertoire to be successful.

Padres win seesaw battle with Mariners, even series

imagn-26935073.jpg

The San Diego Padres offense jumped all over Seattle Mariners starter Luis Castillo in the top of the first inning. The Padres scored five runs in the inning and saw one of the deadline additions hit a two-out grand slam home run. But it was the ability for San Diego to play small ball that allowed them to earn a 7-6 win over Seattle in the second game of their three-game series at T-Mobile Park, Tuesday.

The Padres jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning on the strength of a Ramon Laureano two-out grand slam. The home run gave Laureano 21 for the year, five of which have come since arriving in San Diego.

The Padres watched what appeared to be a comfortable lead disappear with two swings as the Mariners hit two three-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Randy Arozarena hit the first off starter Dylan Cease and Eugenio Suarez hit the second off reliever Jason Adam. The two home runs allowed Seattle to take a 6-5 lead over San Diego.

The Padres provided an immediate response in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to retake the lead. Gavin Sheets opened the inning with a double and Laureano followed with a double that just got over the head of Arozarena in left field. Sheets had to wait to see if he had a play before advancing and was only able to get to third base.

With Sheets on third and Laureano on second with no outs, Jake Cronenworth delivered an RBI-single to left that allowed the Padres to tie the game, 6-6.

Padres Reacts Survey: Which team will take the NL West; who represents the NL in the World Series?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Padres fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed their season series at Petco Park over the weekend.

Despite the Padres winning two of the three games, the Dodgers won the season series before their final three-game set even started. San Diego dropped the season series 4-9, and the teams went into their respective series against the Seattle Mariners and the Cincinatti Reds in a tie for first place in the West.

The Padres are 1-1 in their first two games against the Mariners and the Dodgers are 2-0 in their two games against the Reds.

San Diego and Los Angeles are separated by a game in the National League West standings and the Dodgers own the tiebreaker if they finish the season with the same record. With 29 games to play, the top spot in the division is still up for grabs.

The Padres and Dodgers are both positioned to make the postseason no matter which team wins the division. They are joined by the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets. Only one team will earn the opportunity to compete for a championship, and like the NL West, that opportunity is yet to be determined.

Padres rally, come up short in 4-3 loss to Mariners

gettyimages-2232422640.jpg

For the second time in as many days, a three-run home run off the bat of Eugenio Suarez forced the San Diego Padres to come from behind in an effort to beat the Seattle Mariners. This time the deficit proved to be too much for the Padres to overcome and they dropped the final game of the series with the Mariners, 4-3 at T-Mobile Park, Wednesday.

Yu Darvish started on the mound for San Diego and pitched well through three innings despite allowing a run in the second inning on a Luke Raley RBI-double to put Seattle ahead, 1-0. However, Darvish ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning, allowing a single to Julio Rodriguez, who then stole second. Darvish then allowed a walk to Josh Naylor to put runners at first and second for the Mariners.

Suarez, who hit a three-run homer off Jason Adam Tuesday night, delivered another three run home run to left field that put Seattle up 4-0. Darvish remained in the game and recorded outs against each of the next three batters, but the San Diego offense had not shown much life to that point and the deficit appeared insurmountable.

The Padres struggled to get anything going against Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo. He held the San Diego offense in check, allowing three hits through five innings, until the top of the sixth inning. San Diego scored a run on a Gavin Sheets two-out RBI-single and loaded the bases after a Jose Iglesias infield single.

Woo was taken out of the game and Gabe Speier came in to face Jake Cronenworth. He squared to bunt and pulled the bat back and was hit on the forearm to force in a run and cut the deficit to, 4-2. Freddy Fermin struck out to end the rally and the inning, but San Diego had forced its way back into the game.

The Padres did not have a baserunner after the sixth until the top of the ninth inning. Facing Mariners closer Andres Munoz, Cronenworth delivered a one-out double, just missing a home run, to keep the San Diego hopes alive.

Will Wagner pinch-hit for Fermin and lined out for the second out of the inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered an RBI-double to make the score, 4-3. Ramon Laureano stepped in to the batter’s box with two outs and Tatis Jr. stole third on the first pitch of the at-bat. Laureano hit the next pitch right to Suarez at third base, who threw across the diamond to get Laureano at first by a step, ending the game.

San Diego is off Thursday and heads to Minnesota to take on the Twins, Friday at 5:10 p.m.
