Washington Nationals swept in a gut punch of a home stand

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals are in free fall, losing 5 in a row after the Cardinals finished off their sweep

The Washington Nationals were uncompetitive all weekend against a red hot St. Louis Cardinals team that has now won 8 in a row. Erick Fedde, Andre Pallante, and Miles Mikolas had ERA’s of 4.78, 4.75, and 4.76 respectively before their starts against the Nats. However, the Nationals only managed three runs all series.

After a solid road trip where they held their own, the Nationals have shown next to nothing in their last five games. Now seven games under .500, the Nationals are not showing much improvement in what was supposed to be a step forward season.

Outside of CJ Abrams and a Nathaniel Lowe home run, the offense did nothing today, as has been the case this whole series. This series was a really alarming one. The team had the look of a group that needs a shakeup. Whether that is some sort of meeting or a shakeup in the coaching staff, something needs to change.

MacKenzie Gore was ok today, but not at his dominant best. He allowed four runs in 6.2 innings. Gore responded well after allowing two early solo homers, but ran into trouble when he fatigued in the seventh inning. In the end, those two solo homers were all the Cardinals really needed, but they tacked on more.

In the 8th, Nolan Arenado put the nail in the coffin with a two run homer. There are just not a whole lot of positives to talk about from this weekend, as this is a team searching for answers right now. One impressive thing was the amazing catch Dylan Crews made in center field late in the ballgame.

That was pretty much the only highlight in an ugly weekend. Before the season, Davey Martinez said the time to win was now, but that is not happening. At a certain point there needs to be some accountability because this rebuild seems to have stagnated.

#Nats manager Davey Martinez says the core guys are here, and the time to win is now @wusa9 pic.twitter.com/YNX0sPCZTv

— Tom Hunsicker (@TomSportsWUSA9) February 18, 2025

CJ Abrams, James Wood, and MacKenzie Gore are excellent young players and a good core, but they need help. That help has not been there for most of the season. The starting pitching has slowed down after a hot start, and there are a lot of holes in the lineup still.

I wish I could be more positive about this team right now, because I love Nationals baseball, but the team is just not delivering. Fans have been very patient throughout the rebuild, but it is getting frustrating. The team will heat up from this, but has this team improved from where they were the last couple years?

Yet another 71-91 season would be maddening and frustrating. The Washington Nationals should be climbing out of their rebuild right now, but it does not look like they have emerged yet.

Guys like Wood, Gore and Abrams are doing their part, but the rest of the roster still needs so much work. I truly hope I am wrong and the Nats can put together a big winning streak, but being a Nationals fan is a helpless feeling right now.

MLB Draft 2025: Ethan Holliday emerging as favorite to go first overall

Syndication: The Oklahoman

SARAH PHIPPS/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

While there is still a lot of uncertainty at the top of the draft, Ethan Holliday is gaining steam to be first pick

The theme of the 2025 MLB Draft has been uncertainty. Talk to any expert, and they will tell you it is a muddy picture at the top of the draft. This differs greatly from the last times the Washington Nationals had the first pick in the draft. Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper were slam dunk picks, and seen as generational prospects.

However, as we are getting deeper in the process, one name is rising to the top, Ethan Holliday. He is the most famous prospect in the draft, being the son of Matt Holliday and brother of former first overall pick Jackson Holliday. Maybe it was just him all along, and people tried to pretend otherwise. Whatever the case, in the three most recent high profile mock drafts, he has been the Nationals pick at one for all three.

MLB Pipeline mocked Ethan Holliday to the Nats, adding that the pick is likely to come down to Holliday, or high school pitcher Seth Hernandez. With Holliday’s bloodlines and pedigree, he is the safer pick than Hernandez, who would be the first ever high school right handed pitcher to be drafted first overall. Holliday would also bring excitement to a fanbase that is growing restless with the progress of the rebuild.

Today, Baseball America put out a mock that also had Holliday at the top. They noted that the Nats are tracking a variety of players, but Holliday’s name is the one that comes up the most. While Holliday struggled some in the summer showcase circuit, he has had a dominant spring, showing the huge power upside he possesses. While he is likely to move to third base, BA noted that he has looked good at shortstop this spring.

Keith Law, who is never afraid to throw a curveball also had Holliday as the Nationals top pick. He added a lot of the same things as the other mocks, talking about how a number of names are still in play. Law also floated the possibility of cutting a deal.

With none of the college players really taking the next step, I think Holliday is the easiest pick for the Nats. He has huge power and has the baseball intelligence that comes with being the son of an All-Star.

While he struggled at times this summer, it would not be the first time that has happened for a top player. Being the biggest name at those events, Holliday got pitched around a lot and tried to do too much because of that. I remember seeing that happen to Bryce Harper in 2016. It can be tough to stay locked in when you aren’t being given pitches to hit on a regular basis.

Another key factor for me would be the role of Matt Holliday. It is clear he knows hitting like the back of his hand. Having him in Ethan’s corner would be a huge asset and would help out the Nationals a lot. While there has been a lot of uncertainty at the top of this draft, sometimes the right answer is the one staring you in the face. Ethan Holliday is the guy staring Mike Rizzo right in the face.

The struggling Washington Nationals (17-24) take on a the rapidly improving Atlanta Braves (19-21)

Washington is coming off one of their worst series all season, getting swept by the St. Louis Cardinals. At 17-24, they are currently sitting in fourth place in the National League East and have fans wondering what the future holds. A team with great young talent in MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, and James Wood is a fun team poised for future success. Going up against a tough Atlanta Braves team will be a challenge, as Atlanta is starting to figure things out offensively.

Atlanta is coming off a series loss against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Since their horrendous start to the season, the offense and pitching is starting to click with key players returning from injury.

This is a big matchup for the National League East standings, and a good series from either team will push them closer to fighting for a division title.

Jake Irvin has been a pleasant surprise for the Washington Nationals, finding a spot in a rotation with more question marks than answers. Irvin this season holds a career-high 3.94 ERA. He produced a solid start last time on the mound, giving up four hits and two earned runs in a victory against the Cleveland Guardians.

If you are a Washington Nationals fan, you have to love seeing the top half of the lineup for today’s matchup. The future of the Washington Nationals, led by CJ Abrams and James Wood, have showcased their true potential all season. Dylan Crews and Josh Bell have struggled all season long and some are questioning if they should still be in the everyday lineup.

Grant Holmes has been underwhelming compared to what he showed last year as a starter. Posting a sub-4.00 ERA last season, fans expected a quiet breakout in his first full year starting. Holmes currently holds a 4.58 ERA and allowed four runs in his last outing, resulting in an Atlanta loss.

Red-hot Alex Verdugo has been a great replacement so far for an injury-riddled outfield and is in the lead off spot for a reason. A star studded lineup headlined by Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna have carried the Atlanta offense this season, while stars like Matt Olsen, Sean Murphy, and Ozzie Albies have struggled at the plate all season. Against a struggling Washington pitching staff, this could be the series Atlanta fully figures out their offensive woes.

Follow along as the Nationals look to snap their six game losing streak

It has been a rough week for the Nationals, who have now lost six games in a row. They battled last night, but fell to the Braves, with Alex Verdugo hitting a walk off single. Hopefully the Nats can snap the losing streak tonight.

Luis Garcia Jr. is out on paternity leave, so Jose Tena will play second base and Amed Rosario will play third base. Josh Bell will get another start at DH, while Jacob Young comes in to play center field.

Michael Soroka will return to Atlanta for the first time since he left the club after 2023. He was an All-Star and young star for the Braves before injuries derailed him. Soroka is still beloved by Braves fans. He was great in his first five innings last time out before struggling in the sixth.

Walk-off hero Alex Verdugo will lead off for the Braves tonight. A lot of familiar names make up the middle of the Braves order. However, the Nats are seeing rookie catcher Drake Baldwin for the first time tonight. Spencer Schwellenbach will start for the Braves tonight. He has had a good start to the season.

Michael Soroka is an interesting arm for the Washington Nationals

MLB: Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Michael Soroka showed some interesting things last night in his return to Atlanta

There have not been a lot of positives to talk about lately with the Nationals, but I came away impressed with Michael Soroka’s performance. He came back to Atlanta for the first time since leaving the Braves, where has played most of his career. The numbers were not eye popping, but there is reason to believe he has success on the horizon.

On the surface, Soroka did not have an outstanding outing. A high pitch count forced him to exit after four innings, where he allowed two runs, both via a Drake Baldwin homer. Soroka allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

He was amped up to start the game, throwing the two hardest pitches of his career against former teammate Austin Riley in the first inning. While the velocity cooled off later in the game, he still averaged an impressive 94.8 MPH on his heater. That is way up from his career norms.

His big slider was also impressive and he was leaning on it a lot, throwing the pitch 41% of the time. He uses it both as a chase pitch and as a way to get free strikes. Braves hitters did a good job of making Soroka work, which is why he only got through five innings, but I was impressed with the quality of his stuff.

Despite having a 6.43 ERA in his first three starts, I think better things are on the horizon for the right hander. His underlying numbers are solid, with a 3.89 FIP and 3.26 xERA. That combined with his strong stuff makes him an interesting player.

One thing to keep in mind is that Soroka is only on a one-year deal. If the Nats season continues to tail spin, he could be a trade candidate. Soroka is just 27 years old, has strong stuff and solid underlying numbers. A lot of the more analytical playoff teams would be willing to take a shot on him. His velocity is also up over a tick this season.

Another factor is his bullpen experience. He did his best work in a multi-inning relief role with the White Sox last year, and a contender could look to use him in a similar sort of role. However, with Soroka just being 27, the Nats could look to re-sign him if he heats up. He is young enough to be a part of the teams timeline long term.

Before that, we need to see his stuff and underlying numbers turn into results. He was dominant through five against the Guardians, but struggled in that sixth inning. Soroka has yet to have a great start from start to finish. I think that could change soon though.

With all the injuries Soroka has had to deal with, it is cool to see him looking this sharp. Behind MacKenzie Gore, I think Soroka has the best pure stuff among Nats starters. It will not be too long before he turns that sharp stuff into good results.

Follow along as the Nationals look to snap their seven game losing streak

The Nationals are looking to turn things around and salvage the series tonight. They’ve continued to struggle on the road and are now staring down the possibility of an eighth straight loss, something that hasn’t happened since July 2022.

Amed Rosario moves up from the 5-hole to bat second in tonight’s lineup, bumping everyone else down a spot. Nathaniel Lowe now takes over the cleanup duties, with Josh Bell remaining in the DH role. Alex Call is back in the lineup, and Dylan Crews will handle center field. Keibert Ruiz gets the night off behind the plate, so Riley Adams steps in for just his second start in the last eight days.

On the mound is lefty Mitchell Parker. He opened the year strong, allowing three runs or fewer in each of his first five starts. But over his last three outings, things have gone sideways. Parker has posted a 10.38 ERA, 2.23 WHIP, and a rough 6:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’ll look to right the ship tonight against a Braves lineup that’s hit just .203 against left-handed pitching this year, fourth-worst in the league.

— Washington Nationals (@Nationals) May 14, 2025

Outfielder Alex Verdugo, who had started 12 straight games, is getting a much-needed day off. Eli White will take over in left field and hit leadoff, a move many Braves fans will be happy about.

There’s a slight shakeup in the heart of the order, Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson flip spots from last night, with Ozuna batting third and Olson now hitting cleanup. Catcher Sean Murphy returns to the lineup after a day of rest and will bat fifth. In right field, platoon man Stuart Fairchild gets the start tonight.

On the bump tonight is righty Bryce Elder, he’s been one of the weaker arms in the Braves rotation this year. Coming off his best outing of the season, striking out eight over six innings against Pittsburgh, though he did allow three earned runs and took the loss. Elder enters tonight with a 2–2 record and a 4.97 ERA across seven starts.

Washington Nationals offense fails to get going in loss to the Braves

MLB: Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals offense is really struggling, especially against starting pitchers

After a win last night, we hoped this could be the start of a solid winning streak for the Nats. However, those hopes were dashed in a 5-2 defeat to the Braves. It looked a lot like many other recent losses. The Nats were in the game for the most part, but always a step behind and unable to generate much offense.

The offense has been especially poor against starting pitchers. In their last seven games, the starting pitcher completed at least six innings in six of those outings. Miles Mikolas was the only one who did not, and he had a quick hook, leaving after 5.1 innings and 69 pitches. He did not leave because he was done, rather the Cardinals played the matchups with a bullpen that was ultra-fresh.

On the broadcast, Bob said that the Nats have fallen behind in 20 of their last 21 games, which is just not a way to consistently win games. You need to have the same fire you have in the eight inning early in the game.

In the second inning, the Nationals had the bases loaded with one out, but squandered that golden opportunity when Jacob Young hit into a double play. As has been the case for years, the Nationals are hitting too many ground balls, especially in situations where they need to elevate. Young swung at the first pitch because it was a hittable offering you could elevate, he just failed to execute.

The lack of execution on offense has been a big problem, as well as some key bats being ice cold. After red hot starts to the season, Nathaniel Lowe and Keibert Ruiz both have OPS’ in the .600’s. The Nats really need Lowe to get going because he was that big bat that was supposed to stabilize the lineup. When he was hot, the lineup was so much deeper. Now there is not a whole lot to worry about beyond Wood and Abrams.

Speaking of Abrams, he is the lone hot bat in the lineup right now. He had yet another multi-hit day, with a single and a solo homer. Abrams is now hitting .317 with a .927 OPS. He is trending towards being an All-Star again.

CJ Abrams is on his way to a second straight All-Star game. Hitting .317 with a .927 OPS. pic.twitter.com/aPINOcrwWl

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) May 15, 2025

However, this was not enough. It was one of two runs the Nats scored on the day. While the pitching was not amazing today, this loss is on the offense. Trevor Williams was solid in his first four innings, before running into trouble in the fifth and faltering.

While the bullpen was not perfect today, they did their job for the most part. The Nats had chances, but just hit too many balls on the ground and hit into too many double plays.

Now we are on to the battle of the beltway. Before the season, this would look like an interesting matchup. However, it is now a battle of two bottom feeders who can’t get their seasons going. The O’s rotation has melted down, and the vibes there seem very low.

Hopefully, the Nats can get going against the struggling Baltimore squad. They need to because this season is starting to spiral out of control. This needs to be a step forward season, and if they don’t get going, sniffing .500 could be out the window early.

The Nationals look for the split in Atlanta as they hope to start a winning streak

The Washington Nationals are finally winners again after a hard fought 5-4 victory in Atlanta last night. They came from behind and showed a lot of fight, deciding they had enough of the losing. Now it is time to stack wins.

For the first time in a while, Dylan Crews is getting a day off. Jacob Young will be in center field and Alex Call will play right field. Amed Rosario will play second while Jose Tena will play third. It had been the other way around the past couple games. Trevor Williams will look to get his season off the ground in his start today.

With a righty on the mound, the Braves have a lineup more like the one they had the first couple games of the series. AJ Smith-Shawver will take the bump for the Braves.

Follow along as the slumping Nats take on the disappointing O’s

Heading into the season, the Nats were supposed to be a young team on the rise pushing towards .500 and the O’s were supposed to be a legitimate contender in the AL. Neither of these things have happened, and now the two teams meet in a crossroads weekend series.

Ace MacKenzie Gore will be on the mound for the Nats as they look to get going after losing 8 of 9. Josh Bell is out of the lineup, meaning James Wood will DH and Alex Call will play left field. Luis Garcia Jr. is back from paternity leave, but he will not be in the lineup tonight. Instead, Nasim Nunez will get a rare start at second base.

While the O’s rotation has been the most glaring weakness, the Orioles lineup has also failed to deliver on their preseason expectations. Like the Nats, their star player will DH, with Gunnar Henderson getting off his feet. Ramon Laureano has had a lot of success against Gore in his career, so he will be in the lineup as well. Jorge Mateo will play shortstop with Henderson DH’ing. Cade Povich, who had a lot of success against the Nats in his start earlier in the season will be on the mound.

Updated lineup for tonight:

DH - Henderson
1B - Mountcastle
C - Rutschman
LF - Laureano
RF - O’Hearn
3B - Urías
2B - Holliday

SS - Mateo

MacKenzie Gore had a really weird outing

MLB: Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals ace had his strikeout stuff going, but when he gave up contact it was hard

MacKenzie Gore had a bizarre outing in the Nationals 4-3 win over the Orioles. In fact, it was something never done before. No pitcher had ever gone fewer than four innings while allowing at least 10 hits and striking out at least nine until last night.

Searched for any start ever where a pitcher had
a) at most 3.2 innings
b) at least 10 hits
c) at least 9 strikeouts https://t.co/8BmZzxXPrx pic.twitter.com/r5aPcwj6QV

— Spencer Nusbaum (@spencernusbaum_) May 17, 2025

Honestly, if there was anyone to do this, Gore would be the sort of pitcher to do it. This outing is a good summary of Gore’s strengths and flaws. It really was like a parody of a MacKenzie Gore start.

As you would expect from Gore, he was generating whiffs at will. His 21 whiffs were the most of any pitcher last night, a list Gore regularly tops. After his nine strikeout night, he now has the most strikeouts of any pitcher in baseball, with Zack Wheeler being 10 K’s behind him.

MacKenzie Gore is one of the great strikeout artists in baseball. That is a very important quality for pitchers to have. In this era, most great starting pitchers get a lot of K’s. Gore’s curveball, slider, changeup, and cutter all have whiff percentages over 45%. That is seriously impressive and is how you become an elite starting pitcher.

However, as last night proved, Gore is not there yet. He threw 102 pitches in 3.2 innings and was laboring all night. When Orioles hitters were making contact, it was a hit most of the time. Some of this was bad luck and some bad defense by the Nats, but not all of it.

Most of those hits were clean hits on well struck balls. Gore’s babip of .379 is high, but there is a reason his career mark is .331. He gives up a lot of hard contact and does not avoid barrels. Gore’s average exit velocity allowed and hard hit% is in the 8th percentile. His ground ball percentage is also in the 22nd percentile, so a lot of that hard contact is in the air as well.

Gore needs to solve this problem if he wants to become an ace. As is, Gore is already a frustrating 2 or 3 starter who puts up big strikeout numbers. However, we all know he can be more than this.

A potential solution for this would be introducing a sinker into his arsenal. He should not throw it more than his four-seamer, but it would be a good add to his mix. Gore needs a pitch that can get quick outs, especially on the ground. A sinker would be a way to do that. I used to think Gore adding a sinker would be silly because his four-seamer is his bread and butter. However, he needs something to get suboptimal contact.

Right now hitters are batting .337 against his four-seamer and he is throwing it 48.4% of the time. Maybe adding a sinker he could throw about 20% of the time would be helpful. It would probably take away from his strikeout numbers, but he needs to sacrifice some whiff for weaker contact.

While last night was an extreme example, it highlighted everything that is right about MacKenzie Gore, but also everything that is wrong with him. He is an elite strikeout artist, but he kind of has to be to have any success because he cannot limit hard contact.

Gore’s breaking stuff has been awesome this season and it was again tonight. However, his fastball has been getting hit around and he needs a way to generate weak contact. Maybe a 3.2 inning, 10 hit, 9 strikeout performance is the wakeup call Gore needs to realize he needs to change things up. He has ace potential, he just needs to find a way to limit the hard contact if he wants to get there.

Washington Nationals clinch a series win against floundering Orioles

MLB: Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images

James Wood and the Nationals jumped on the Orioles in a first inning explosion that gave them the win

The Baltimore Orioles got no new manager bounce after firing Brandon Hyde earlier today. Orioles starter Kyle Gibson was really struggling entering his start against the Nats. Despite the Nationals recent struggles against starting pitchers, they came out swinging against Gibson.

It was great to see the Nats jump on a guy early, they have not done that enough this year. Kyle Gibson had nothing from the jump today. The first six batters reached base and he was not fooling any Nats. By the time he got his first out, the game was already 4-0. He faced all nine Nationals hitters, departing after getting two of them out and allowing six runs.

With the long wait, I worried about how sharp Jake Irvin would look out of the gate. Those questions only grew after a leadoff double to Jackson Holliday. However, Irvin ended up getting a zero in the first and was brilliant for the vast majority of his outing. After MacKenzie Gore only went 3.2 innings, Irvin did a great job pitching deep into the game, going into the seventh.

He ran into trouble that inning, allowing two runs, but he had a great outing. Irvin was really leaning on that curveball, especially to steal strikes today. He also had more strikeout stuff than he has had in his past couple starts. Irvin struck out six today after only striking out three batters in his last three starts.

Another unsung hero of today’s game was Jose A Ferrer, who came in and delivered 1.2 scoreless innings. After a brutal start to the season, Ferrer has looked more like he did in 2024 after his blowup against the Guardians. He has not given up a run in his last five outings. If he can get going, the Nats could quietly have a solid young nucleus in the pen of him, Jackson Rutledge and Cole Henry.

However, the story of the day was the offense. They did not homer, but they did have five extra base hits on the day. That first inning set the tone. While they went quiet in the middle of the game, they picked things up in the ninth. The O’s showed James Wood the ultimate sign of respect that inning when they intentionally walked the 22 year old. That is truly a sign that Wood is feared in this league.

A surly Nathaniel Lowe made the O’s pay for disrespecting him with a double that drove in Wood as well as Jose Tena. Lowe is only hitting .227 after a recent slump, and needs to heat back up. He got on base twice today and homered yesterday, so he could be coming back to life. Lowe has also been weirdly bad in May during his career. His career .659 OPS in May is over 100 points lower than his OPS for any other month in his career.

The trio of Abrams, Wood and Lowe can be a dynamic one if all three are firing on all cylinders. They were doing just that today. While Zach Brzykcy made things interesting in the ninth, allowing four runs, the result was never in doubt. The Nats won 10-6. They have now won three of their last four and look to have moved past the seven game losing streak.

It is also shocking to see the state the Orioles are in. They have totally collapsed and look like a completely different team than the one they have been the last couple years. It is almost reminiscent of what happened to the White Sox at the beginning of the 2020’s. The O’s problems go well beyond the now fired Brandon Hyde, and this game made that clear.

The Nats will look to finish the sweep tomorrow. They do not have a sweep this season and it has been something they have struggled to do over the last few years. It will be pivotal to take advantage of this rattled O’s team and get that sweep!

The Nationals have been unable to finish off many sweeps in the past few years, but they have an opportunity to finish one today against the O’s. After the seven game losing streak, the Nats need to make up for lost time. A sweep in this series would go a long way in helping the cause.

Michael Soroka is on the mound today. He has shown flashes of brilliance in his two starts since coming off the IL, but has not put it all together yet. Today could be the day where he does that.

With Jacob Young out of the lineup after his injury, Dylan Crews will go to center field and Alex Call will play in right. The rest of the lineup has a pretty familiar look. Keibert Ruiz’s heavy workload will continue, with the catcher getting another start.

Most Orioles starting pitchers have been ineffective this season, but Zach Eflin has been solid despite missing time with injury. There is some movement in their lineup, with Emmanuel Rivera playing third base and Heston Kjerstad getting a start.

CJ Abrams: A Future Superstar and Current Star

MLB: Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

CJ Abrams has been spectacular this season, showing why he was a main piece in a trade for superstar Juan Soto

Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres, shortstop CJ Abrams is quietly becoming one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. The combination of great contact ability and sneaky power has been the key to his first All-Star appearance in 2024. Even with Washington struggling to find their identity, CJ Abrams has worked his way into becoming a franchise cornerstone.

Abrams has made many improvements in his game. From the defense to his plate discipline, there are many statistics you can argue have contributed the most during this stellar start to the season. Abrams is quietly jumping from fringe All-Star to potential superstar, improving his game in almost every aspect, and suddenly the conversation is:

This article dives into impressive statistical jumps and improvements with Abrams compared to his past seasons and why he should be considered amongst the best shortstops in the game.

**Stats are being used from Baseball Savant**

PERFORMANCE AGAINST OFF-SPEED PITCHES

Abrams performed well to start the season in 2024; however, as the season continued, his numbers slowly declined. Even with a small sample size in 2025, his numbers have once again impressed fans through the first couple of months of the season. Compared to 2024, Abram’s improvement against offspeed pitches should be considered one of his biggest improvements. Against off-speed pitches last season, Abrams hit .172 with a .253 slugging percentage, only recording seventeen hits. This season, Abrams has improved tremendously, batting .381 with a .619 slugging percentage and has already recorded eight hits through one-fourth of the season. Abrams has always been lethal against fastballs, but he still has struggles against breaking pitches, slightly regressing in 2025 compared to 2024. Looking even deeper into how impressive this jump is, MVP runner-up Bobby Witt Jr. has performed well against offspeed pitches, but not at the level Abrams has. Witt is batting .308 with a .423 slugging percentage against offspeed up to this point in the season. Even though it is a small sample size, it is important to recognize the progression Abrams has made in his approach to non-fastball pitches.

PATIENCE AT THE PLATE

There are many advanced statistics when looking at plate discipline. Abrams has improved as a hitter since joining Washington in 2022. His most significant jump is in his out-of-zone swinging percentage. It has dropped almost nine percent since 2022 to this season, dropping from 41.2 percent to 32.4 percent. However, his walk rate is consistent from last season, staying around six percent. While he isn’t swinging outside the zone as much, his first-pitch swing percentage has also dropped from 42.7 in 2022 to 28.5 this season. Abrams is showing his ability to wait for pitches in the zone, become more patient, and see more pitches, giving himself a better opportunity to use his reformed hitting.

HITTING ABILITY

The increase in exit velocity, launch angle, barrel percentage, and hard hit percentage has been seen on full display this season. With his lack of high-end defense, Abrams needs to perform at the plate. His exit velocity has steadily increased since 2022, from 86.5 to 91.2, launch angle has improved tremendously from 6.8 to 16.2, and barrel percentage from 2.1 to 10.3. Seeing this explains the increase in average, slugging, and his on-base percentage. Even in a small sample size, the increase in launch angle and barrel percentage has proven to have a direct correlation to better offensive numbers.

With an incredible start to the season, it is important to understand that these numbers may not be sustainable throughout 162 games. Even so, Abrams’ improvement with mechanics and plate discipline has been a sight to see.

Comment about your thoughts on CJ Abrams and the potential he has, and the future for the Washington Nationals!

Addition by Subtraction: The Washington Nationals bullpen is on the road to respectability

MLB: Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

The Nationals bullpen has some fresh faces like Cole Henry who are making the unit less awful

Do not get it twisted, the Washington Nationals bullpen is not great. They will have plenty more nights this season where they throw leads away. It is not always going to be pretty. However, after making some changes, the Nationals bullpen is not the total dumpster fire it was in April. Kyle Finnegan was good, but the rest of the unit was appalling. Most of the guys in the bullpen now can get the job done, at least some of the time.

The season numbers are still bad, with a bullpen ERA of 6.55, the second worst mark in baseball. But hey, it feels good not to be at the bottom anymore. That is where the Nats bullpen has sat for most of the season.

Cutting the Fat:

From the offset, it was very clear the Nats had a bullpen problem. After Opening Day, I wrote that the unit could be an issue, and that proved to be the case. It took a little while for Mike Rizzo to realize this, but eventually he did, making much needed changes.

Five relievers pitched on that Opening Day meltdown. Less than two months later, only two of those guys are still with the team, Kyle Finnegan and Jose A Ferrer. The three others are either in the Nats farm system or out of the organization.

Colin Poche was the first guy to go, getting DFA’d on May 1st, and replaced by veteran Andrew Chafin. While Chafin has had problems finding the zone at times, he has been much more effective than Poche, with a 1.59 ERA in 9 outings. His slider and deception make him a tough at bat for left handed hitters.

The next guy to go was Eduardo Salazar, who was optioned to Triple-A on May 7th. Salazar was a solid arm for the Nats in 2024, but was just way too hittable this season. He allowed 28 hits in 15.2 innings, pitching to a 9.77 ERA.

Salazar is now pitching in the Rochester bullpen and has been decent in four outings. He is just 27, so maybe he just needs a reset to turn things around and he can be a factor again at some point.

The next day, Mike Rizzo decided to cut Lucas Sims after a horror show where the right hander had no command whatsoever. Even by his poor standards, Sims was wild in his last outing, where he walked four in 0.2 innings. Minutes after the game ended, Sims’ time in DC was done.

It was a total disaster for him. He pitched to a shocking ERA of 13.86 in 18 outings. Sims walked 14 and hit seven batters in 12.1 innings. His seven hit batters is still the most in baseball. He was nearly as wild as Trevor Rosenthal.

With those guys being gone, the Nats cut ties with the three biggest problems in their bullpen. While it is not an elite bullpen by any means now, they have more viable arms who you can trust to get outs at this level.

New Blood:

Besides the Chafin pickup, the Nats have looked in house for bullpen solutions. They have turned to a lot of guys who have mostly been starting pitchers in their career. The most notable among those are Cole Henry and Jackson Rutledge.

Both were highly touted starting pitching prospects, but faced hurdles that have forced both into the bullpen. For Rutledge, he just wasn’t getting it done as a starter. He put up a 6.40 ERA in 27 Triple-A starts last year. At 26 years old, the former first rounder was at a crossroads in his career.

However, a move to the bullpen has revitalized him. Rutledge has always had an innate feel to spin the baseball. In the bullpen, he is taking advantage of that, ripping his slider and cutter. His slider is a particularly deadly pitch, with batters hitting .136 against it and whiffing 50% of the time. If anything, he could probably throw it even more than the 28.5% of the time he is using it now.

While his slider is his best weapon, Rutledge also has a mid to upper 90’s fastball to keep hitters honest. He also throws a cutter and splitter, especially to lefties. Right now he has a 2.75 ERA in 19.2 innings, with 10.53 K/9.

The other big revelation in the bullpen has been Cole Henry. He was a big time starting pitching prospect, but was hammered by injuries. Henry had to undergo surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in 2022. A career ender for many players, Henry has bounced back from the surgery and has found life in the bullpen.

He has a 2.93 ERA in 13 appearances across 15.1 innings. However, that impressive mark is still artificially high. Henry has only allowed a run in one of his 13 outings, a five run blowup against the Mets. Other than that, Henry has been spotless.

Henry gets the job done with mainly a fastball-curveball combination. Batters are hitting .143 against the fastball and .222 against the hook. His heater gets way more swing and miss than the average fastball, with hitters swinging at air 32.7% of the time. It is clear he creates a lot of deception and hitters struggle to pick him up.

I think Henry has legitimate high leverage upside, and should be used in more high leverage spots. His stuff is nasty and he is a strike-thrower. Guy like Rutledge and Henry could be the future of the Nationals bullpen.

Return to Form:

The last reason for the Nats bullpen’s climb towards mediocrity is some pitchers turning it around. In particular, I wanted to look at Jorge Lopez and Jose A Ferrer. Both players had their hands in a meltdown against Cleveland last week, but have shown signs of life lately.

With Lopez, I am seeing an uptick in his stuff. At the beginning of the season, his velocity was way down, sitting in the low to mid 90’s. Now we are seeing more 96’s than 93’s. That velocity is super important for a sinker baller like him. Lopez’s breaking stuff looks like it has a lot more bit. His changeup has also looked good at times. Lopez has two scoreless outings against the O’s this weekend, hopefully that is the start of a good run.

The other guy who has been better lately is Jose A Ferrer. After a blowup against the Guardians, his ERA sat at 8.05, and it looked like he could be the next on the chopping block. However, the left hander has strung together five straight scoreless outings now.

His ERA is still at 6.20, but he looks ready to go on a run. Ferrer has always had the talent. I had high hopes for him entering the season, even suggesting he could challenge Kyle Finnegan. Clearly that will not happen, but Ferrer has a chance to bounce back and settle in as a high leverage arm. His sinker is so powerful and heavy, while he flashes a nice changeup and slider as well.

The Nats bullpen is going to be unstable all season. Outside of Finnegan, all of these guys are either erratic or unproven. However, now that they have gotten rid of the likes of Sims and Poche, the Nationals bullpen is not a total laughing stock anymore. All they need from the bullpen is mediocrity, and I think they are going to get that moving forward.

The Washington Nationals offense showed how dynamic it can be

MLB: Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

Led by Abrams and Wood, the Nationals offense showed how special it can be and why it can be so frustrating when they struggle

Now this is the Washington Nationals offense we want to see. After a recent malaise, the Nats offense woke up in a big way this weekend against the O’s. They scored 24 runs in their three game sweep of the Orioles, including 20 in the last two games.

Yes, it does come with the caveat that the Baltimore Orioles pitching staff is a disaster, but seeing that offensive output makes you dream of what is to come. The big guns really went to work in those last two games. CJ Abrams is now hitting .312 with a .942 OPS after his Sunday explosion, where he had three extra base hits.

James Wood also has an OPS over .900 and has been a constant threat all season. While those guys have been clicking all year, they also got production from other guys, which has been a struggle. Luis Garcia Jr., Josh Bell and Dylan Crews all homered yesterday, which was massive.

Those are three guys the Nats were really counting on heading into the season, and they have all struggled. Getting those guys hot, as well as Nathaniel Lowe, would make this lineup extremely dangerous. We know these guys have some talent, they just haven’t shown much of it this season, especially those first three. Lowe was good in March and April, but has really slumped in May.

First and foremost, the Nationals need to prove this series was not a fluke where they punished a bad pitching staff. The team had been ice cold offensively entering this series, getting nothing from the non Wood and Abrams parts of the lineup.

They will get a chance to prove themselves against premium pitching this week. The Braves have Spencer Strider, AJ Smith-Shawver, and Chris Sale lined up to face them this week. It does not get much tougher than that.

While the offense has been wildly inconsistent, the end product is actually a middle of the pack unit, an improvement from last year. They are 16th in OPS, 13th in runs, 16th in slugging and tied for 14th in home runs. While a lot of that has come in bunches with dry spells in between, it is still a big improvement.

However, they need to continue this offensive production and get it from more guys. Wood and Abrams are having All-Star level seasons, but the rest of the Nats most used starters are OPS’ing below .700.

We know a guy like Nathaniel Lowe is capable of much more than a .221 average and .697 OPS. He showed us that in April and throughout his Rangers career. However, he needs to get hot. The Nats are counting on him to be that third big guy in the lineup behind Wood and Abrams.

Luis Garcia Jr. also needs to heat up and I think he is about to turn a corner. His swings have been a lot better lately and he is also vastly underperforming his expected numbers. He showed off his dad strength, hitting a homer in his second game off the paternity list, so maybe that could be a turning point for him.

The Washington Nationals offense has two stars at the top, but the rest of the lineup has a lot of questions. If they can perform, this can be a potent unit. We saw that against the Orioles. However, we have also seen those guys struggle mightily and it has led to some offensive struggles.

All of this also makes the Nationals lack of spending this offseason even more frustrating. This offense really does feel like it is an Alex Bregman away from being one of the better units in the league. However, even as currently constructed, the offense has explosive upside. They just need to show that upside on a more consistent basis. This weekend, they showed what they can be. Now they have to perform to that level, or something close to it on a regular basis.

What’s Wrong with Dylan Crews’ Swing? Unpacking His Struggles in 2025

MLB: Washington Nationals at Baltimore Orioles

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

Taking a deep look into Washington Nationals Dylan Crews’ problems at the plate and what he can do to fix it

On May 14th, Dylan Crews sworded through a high fastball, then was frozen on a back foot slider to end the game. Another strikeout. Another Nationals loss, this one 5-3 to the Braves. Meaning another round of online outcry, Echoing what many in the fanbase are feeling.

Crews has stumbled badly in his first full MLB season. Crews’ .191 batting average and .588 OPS have become a daily concern. The former LSU phenom, long known as a fastball destroyer, is now hitting just .045 against heaters. His struggles against breaking pitches haven’t improved either. As other core young pieces CJ Abrams and James Wood ignite the offense, Crews remains the outlier, and his ongoing slump raises urgent questions about his swing and put’s unwanted pressure on his future.

The Numbers: From Fastball Killer to Liability at the plate

Crews’ 2024 debut showed flashes of his potential. Tallying three home runs, 12 stolen bases and a hard hit rate of 45.2%. Suggesting loud contact was incoming but Crews finished with a slash line of .218/.288/.353 and 80 wRC + in 31 games. His 2024 splits were especially troubling against breaking balls (.082 BA, 51.7% whiff rate) and off-speed pitches (.182 BA). Fastballs were his strength, he hit .297 against them with all three homers of homers coming off heaters.

In 2025, Crews has struggled showing off his ability to hit fastballs. Crews is 1 for 22 against fastballs as of May 18th at (.045), with a 22% whiff rate and seven strikeouts. Against breaking balls, the problem still lingers. His approach and pitch recognition haven’t caught up to major league arms. His .253 wOBA and 13.3% barrel rate suggest he is not generating enough consistent hard contact. especially in early counts.

Crews did have a nine game hot streak through April 27 (.351 BA, 4 HRs) hinting at a turnaround. But regression since has reopened the conversation.

The Breakdown: Mechanics, Mentality, and the MLB Learning Curve

So what is going wrong for Dylan Crews?

It starts with Crews’ swing, one thing he does have is elite bat speed (106 mph max EV, 90th percentile), but his mechanics have gotten long. His swing path has been producing too many fly balls to the opposite field and low exit velocity grounders to the pull side, both signs of a timing issue. According to analyst Matt Collier, this mechanical imbalance is leading to weaker contact and fewer barrels.

Pitchers have taken notice. They’re attacking him with more breaking balls and tying him up inside with fastballs before expanding the zone with spin away. His 36.4% chase rate is above league average (28.5%), and the results show it.

Going back to April 3rd, Hitting coach Darnell Coles believes Crews is “pressing.” The team has been working to refine his eye level and shorten his swing path to better recognize and react to pitch shapes. “He’s trying to do too much,” Coles told reporters. “We just want him to get back to seeing it and hitting it.” We are coming up on two months since this comment and Crews is still struggling.

At LSU, Crews hit .426 with a .567 OBP and compact, consistent mechanics that handled all pitch types. That swing is buried beneath the weight of major league adjustments, but glimpses still surface. In his last game on May 18th, Crews launched a 114 mph fastball dead center for a three-run shot. It was a reminder, the talent hasn’t gone anywhere.

Why This Matters for the Nationals

Crews is right in the middle of Washington’s long-term plans. He, Abrams, Wood, and MacKenzie Gore represent the core of the post-Soto era. The front office didn’t spend big this offseason, they bet on youth. That bet only works if Crews finds his footing.

The Nats rank 7th in stolen bases and have played clean defense, but they sit 24th in runs scored. Crews, with a .253 wOBA and fastball issues, he has been a black hole in the end of the lineup. Washington needs more than speed and potential. They need production.

Still, there’s reason for optimism. Crews’ 29.3 ft/sec sprint speed ranks in the top 7% of MLB. His glove has already earned Gold Glove attention. And his April surge showed what happens when he slows the game down.

He’s been exploited by breaking balls since his debut, but now even fastballs are an issue. His long swing, high chase rate, and declining confidence have neutralized his power. But the tools, bat speed, athleticism, contact skills are all still there. His recent hot streak shows there’s a hitter waiting to break through.

The Nationals need him to find that gear. Whether it’s a mechanical adjustment, a mental reset, or more time to grow, Crews is too important to fade into the background.

Washington Nationals win fourth in a row but Dylan Crews gets injured

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The Nationals once again used early offense to jumpstart yet another win

Ladies and gentleman, he Washington Nationals are hot. They have now won four in a row and five of their last six after defeating the Braves 5-3. The Nats pounced on Spencer Strider, who did not look like his pre-surgery self, with less steam on his fastball.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Nationals gave Spencer Strider a rude welcome back. They strung together four straight hits. After a Luis Garcia Jr. single made it 2-0, Strider threw a wild pitch to make it three.

However, Mitchell Parker gave it all back in the top of the second, giving up a homer to Matt Olson and then three straight doubles later in the inning. It was now 3-3 and the shaky Parker had given away the momentum. At least he was throwing strikes though.

After two quick outs, Dylan Crews would answer the bell. He turned on a Spencer Strider fastball launching it into the left field bleachers. Crews was finally beginning to look comfortable, with homers in back to back games.

Don’t give up on Dylan Crews

— Kev (@klwoodjr) May 20, 2025

However, misfortune would strike the Nationals outfielder later in the game. On a check swing, it looked like Crews tweaked something in his back or oblique area. This would be a huge bummer for him and the Nats if it was serious, especially with Crews just beginning to heat up.

#Nationals Dylan Crews left with an injury. Appeared to occur on this swing. pic.twitter.com/oUtF7gJX34

— Mike Kurland (@Mike_Kurland) May 21, 2025

Outside of that injury, it was a great night for the Nats. After the second inning, Parker really locked in. He pitched into the sixth inning for the first time in a while and only walked one batter.

The offense wasn’t doing a ton after those first two innings, but they were making Braves pitchers work and had good at bats. They would get an insurance run in the seventh thanks to a Nathaniel Lowe sacrifice fly. Lowe had his best at bats in a while tonight, and I think it could be a sign of him turning it around.

The bullpen was also excellent. They have been turning things around and a lot of that has to do with some fresh faces rising to the occasion. Cole Henry received Parker with one out in the sixth and gave Davey three big outs.

Davey also did an excellent job playing the matchups tonight. If you criticize him for his mistakes, you have to credit his successes. He went to Ferrer to get Michael Harris and Nick Allen out, and he did just that.

Davey then extended Ferrer into the 8th, but after allowing a base hit, he wisely turned to Jorge Lopez, who immediately got a double play ball. That wise bullpen management, as well as guys doing their jobs won the Nats this game.

Up two in the ninth, the Nats turned to star closer Kyle Finnegan and he got the job done. It was an uncharacteristically drama free inning from the Nationals closer, who delivered a 1-2-3 9th. Finnegan’s command has been excellent of late, and he has been the one guy who has been reliable all year.

That is now four in a row for the Nats. They needed to go on a run after the seven game losing streak, and they did just that. The Nationals were on the mat and they responded. Tomorrow, they have a chance for a series win and a fifth straight win. Maybe I am greedy, but I think they can get the job done.

Too many lefties in DC: The Washington Nationals lineup will lose balance without Dylan Crews

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The Nationals lineup was already lefty heavy, but with Dylan Crews going down, it might become a bit of a problem

After leaving the game last night, it looks like Dylan Crews will have to go on the IL. To replace him, the Nationals decided to call up prospect Robert Hassell III. However, adding Hassell to this lineup would create a little bit of a problem. The team is now severely lacking in right handed hitters.

Even before Crews’ injury, the Nationals lineup had a lot of left handed hitters. The first six guys in the lineup last night were left handed hitters, or switch hitters. Notably, both switch hitters are better as left handed hitters as well.

The only righties in the lineup last night were Alex Call and Dylan Crews, who is now hurt. With Crews going down, the Nationals will only have one right handed hitter in the lineup a lot of nights, unless they want to bench Hassell and play Call and Jacob Young together. While this is an option, I doubt it is one fans would be happy with. They want to see what the highly touted Hassell can do.

However, this is going to create an imbalance in the lineup. This is not the end of the world, but it could be an issue, especially against left handed pitching. Guys like James Wood and CJ Abrams can handle any type of pitcher, but other guys are more platoon reliant.

Nathaniel Lowe and Luis Garcia Jr. both have extreme splits. Garcia is 2/22 against left handed pitching and Lowe is hitting just .180 against southpaws. As a whole, the Nats have a .720 OPS against righties and a .654 mark against lefties. That is a 66 point difference which could become even more extreme with Hassell’s arrival.

Hassell has been raking, but only against right handed pitching. Against righties, the young outfielder is hitting over .300 with an OPS of .798. All of his extra base hits have also come against righties. However, his .491 OPS against lefties is over 300 points lower. Left handed pitching has been a problem for the Nats and it is something Hassell will only make worse.

With this in mind, you are going to have to platoon. Amed Rosario needs to be in the lineup every game against left handers. I also think it would be wise to platoon Hassell with either Jacob Young or Alex Call. Davey Martinez is also going to have to use his bench when lefty relievers inevitably come in the game. Pinch hitting is not as prevalent as it used to be, but it is something Davey Martinez will have to do.

One other potential solution to this issue could be an exciting one. The Nationals have a top prospect performing in Triple-A who just so happens to be a right handed bat. That of course is Brady House.

I believe House could help solve the lack of balance in the lineup. He could replace the left handed Jose Tena and provide an instant impact. House is good against righties with a .794 OPS. However, he really shines against southpaws, hitting .324 with a .959 OPS.

Honestly, he brings a lot of things the Nationals need. He is a right handed bat who crushes lefties and has big power. The Nats also have not gotten much from the third base position offensively. Along with the bat, House has a great glove over at third, which makes things even more appealing.

While Jose Tena has made strides as a defender, he still has his shaky moments. House can be a brick wall at the hot corner the way Paul DeJong was for the first few weeks. However, House brings much more to the table offensively than DeJong. It would also be a move to energize the fanbase.

Right now, the Nats are going to have nights where they only have one true right handed hitter in the lineup. This is not a backbreaking problem or anything, that lack of balance can be exploited by some teams. The Nats are not going to be the same offense against left handed pitching. It is already bad, but losing Crews could make things even worse.

This is a story to watch, and if the lineup looks too unbalanced, they have an answer waiting in Triple-A. Robert Hassell’s call up is very exciting, but it does create a lack of balance in the Washington Nationals lineup.

Nationals Prospects: Robert Hassell III gets the call to the show

Syndication: Democrat and Chronicle

Another piece of the Juan Soto trade is coming to the big leagues, as the Washington Nationals promote Robert Hassell

The Washington Nationals have promoted their 11th ranked prospect Robert Hassell III to the big leagues. It has been a long and bumpy road for Hassell, but with Dylan Crews going down last night, he is finally a big leaguer.

The Washington Nationals are calling up Robert Hassell III to the majors, per @_chaseford. pic.twitter.com/9WRVVNGann

— Milb Central (@milb_central) May 21, 2025

It has been quite the journey for the man they call Bobby Barrels. He was drafted 8th overall out of high school in the 2020 draft by the San Diego Padres. Hassell performed well in the low minors for the Padres before coming over in the Juan Soto blockbuster trade that is the gift that keeps on giving for Mike Rizzo and the Nats.

With Robert Hassell III coming up to the big leagues, the Nationals officially have turned the Juan Soto trade into 4 pieces of the rebuild, with Susana ranking as a Top 100 Prospect in baseball currently…

Thank you, Juan Soto

Where would the Nats be without this deal? https://t.co/Vf03JCYNie pic.twitter.com/Tg15tfR4Ge

— Bennett Lehmann (@DCBerk) May 21, 2025

After coming over to the Nats system, he struggled in 2022 before injuring his hamate in the Arizona Fall League. That injury really messed with Hassell in 2023. He has a handsy swing, so that injury really threw him off. His pure hitting ability, which was his greatest gift collapsed that year.

He was better in 2024, but still not amazing. However, he showed some flashes of his old self in the AFL last fall. He really got fans excited this spring with a phenomenal spring training where he battled to make the team out of camp.

He did not make the team, and struggled his first month in Triple-A, putting up a .582 OPS. However, as the weather warmed up in Rochester, so did Hassell. The outfielder is hitting .365 this month with a 1.006 OPS. He and Daylen Lile have been a dynamic duo in Rochester’s outfield.

Now with Dylan Crews hurting himself, Hassell will get a chance to shine at the big league level. I would love to see Hassell and Alex Call platoon in right field. Maybe if Call heats up again, you can platoon Hassell and Jacob Young in center, as Hassell is also a strong defender.

Regardless, it is great to see Bobby Barrels get the call to the show. He has worked very hard for this moment and has overcome a lot of adversity. Now it is time for him to show he is a big leaguer.

Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves game thread

MLB: Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Follow along as the Nationals get back to work following a rain out last night

The red hot Washington Nationals were stopped in their tracks last night, but not by the Braves. Mother nature delayed the Nationals chance to win a fifth straight game. Tonight they will be back in action, taking on the Atlanta Braves.

With Dylan Crews going on the IL, Robert Hassell III will make his big league debut, batting seventh and playing center field. Jacob Young is not on the IL, but he is still not in the lineup after colliding with the wall in Baltimore. That means Alex Call will play right field. Call is the only pure right handed hitter in the lineup. Trevor Williams will take the mound for the Nats.

The Braves are only making one change to their game one lineup. They have an embarrassment of riches at the catching position. Both Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin have had great seasons. With Ozuna and Olson entrenched at DH in first base, one of those guys is going to have to be out of the lineup. Today, Baldwin will play, while Murphy played in game one. AJ Smith-Shawver was stellar in his last start against the Nats and will look to repeat the trick tonight.

While it stinks to see Dylan Crews go down, I am excited to see Robert Hassell’s MLB debut tonight. He is arriving to a team full of confidence. It is time to make a statement and get that fifth straight win. Let’s go Nats!
