Washington Nationals stun the New York Mets in another walk off thriller

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals came back from the dead to defeat a shell shocked New York Mets team

Between the near meltdown in Colorado and the game on Friday, the Washington Nationals have been in some thrillers so far this season. However, this comeback win over the Mets is by far the win of the season.

The Washington Nationals looked dead in the water from the jump, as Mitchell Parker did not have his A, B, or C game today. His command was all over the place. The southpaw couldn’t spot the fastball and his curve had absolutely no bite.

Parker put the Nats into a 5-0 hole with a four walk, three hit bottom of the first. Even the outs he was getting were productive sac flies. It took 43 pitches for Parker to get through the first inning. Parker could have easily quit, but he ended up giving the Nationals five vital innings.

It was not pretty and he gave up two more runs along the way, but Mitchell Parker deserves credit for saving the bullpen and limiting the damage after a disastrous first. Even if the Nats lost, Parker getting through five would have been a commendable effort.

While Parker was grinding through the game without anything close to his best stuff, the offense was mostly dormant. The lone exception was a Dylan Crews homer in the second inning to make it 6-1.

— Washington Nationals (@Nationals) April 27, 2025

It looked like Crews staying hot would be the only positive to come out of this game. However, as we will discuss that was far from the case.

In the mean time, the Nats were having a lot of trouble with Tylor Megill. Heading into the seventh inning, Crews’ homer and an Alex Call walk were all the Nats could muster.

However, the much maligned B bullpen was giving the Nats a chance to do something. Lucas Sims had a strong first inning before running into trouble in his second inning of work. Shockingly, Colin Poche came in with runners on first and second with nobody out and left without allowing a run. Poche got a much needed ground ball double play before striking out the pesky Luis Torrens.

To start the seventh, the Nats caught a break. Juan Soto lost a fly ball in the sun and Luis Garcia Jr. hustled to turn it into a double. The struggling Josh Bell would drive him in on a laser beam of a single.

That would be it for Tylor Megill. However, with the score still being 7-2, it looked to be a comfortable Mets win. That point would be reinforced when Jose Butto struck out Dylan Crews to start his outing.

However, Alex Call and Jose Tena would both single to keep the inning alive for Riley Adams and make it a 7-3 game. Adams has looked lost at the plate all season in his sparse playing time. However, he is always a threat to homer when he runs into one. The big catcher did just that when Jose Butto grooved a heater right down the pipe. Adams did not miss it and made this a brand new ball game with one swing of the bat.

After a 1-2-3 inning from Jackson Rutledge, the Nats were back in business after a James Wood leadoff double. After a Luis Garcia Jr. tapper and Nathaniel Lowe walk, it was first and second with one out for Josh Bell. Bell had a rough at bat striking out on three pitches.

After Dylan Crews got hit, Jose Tena stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and a chance to be a hero. However, he hit a soft liner, getting Huascar Brozoban and the Mets out of the inning.

Jackson Rutledge was shaky in his second inning of work, allowing the first two runners to reach base. After a wild pitch, it was second and third with nobody out. However, Rutledge got two ground balls. Jorge Lopez would come in and induce yet another ground out to get out of the jam. That would leave it all to the bottom of the ninth, for all the marbles.

The ultra clutch Alex Call got a leadoff double to start the frame. Alex Call just needs to play more. The lineup is much more potent with him in there compared to Jacob Young. He reached base three times today, something that has become a common occurrence for him.

Despite hitting the three run homer that got the Nats back into the game, Riley Adams was pinch hit for bringing Keibert Ruiz into the game. Keibert had a very professional at bat, moving the runner to third base on a ground ball to the second baseman.

That brought up CJ Abrams, who had a rough day to that point. He was 0-4 with 3 K’s to that point. Quickly, the Nationals shortstop fell behind 1-2 against the flame throwing Ryne Stanek. However, after fighting some really tough pitches, he drove a splitter through the infield to tie the game.

CJ Abrams comes through!

— MLB (@MLB) April 27, 2025

After a James Wood walk, Luis Garcia Jr. stepped to the plate. It had already been an eventful day for the second baseman. His double that Juan Soto lost in the sun started this rally. He also made a fantastic catch early in the game, where it looked like he had really hurt himself.

But here we are, in the bottom of the ninth with one out and men on first and second. Against all odds, the Nationals are not only in this game, but have a chance to win it.

Garcia hit a ground ball deep to the first baseman, making it an awkward play for Pete Alonso. It ended up being too awkward for him to pull off, as he overthrew the pitcher Stanek. For the second time in three days, CJ Abrams raced home to give the Nationals a walk off win.

This game was baseball at its finest. The Nationals showed a never say die attitude that makes fans fall in love with the game. They kept battling and chipping away until they finally got the job done. The Washington Nationals were not to be denied this afternoon.

Washington Nationals getting more production from the bottom of the lineup

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals

Brad Mills-Imagn Images

After struggling early in the season, the bottom of the Nats lineup has been performing well lately due to new faces

Early in the season, the bottom of the lineup was really struggling. Guys like Dylan Crews and Paul DeJong just kept striking out. While Jacob Young is a great defender, he is not much of a factor with the bat. It seemed like once you got past guys like CJ Abrams, James Wood, Keibert Ruiz and Nathaniel Lowe, it was smooth sailing.

However, that has changed recently, especially in games like yesterday where Alex Call is in the lineup. The combination of Call, Crews, and Jose Tena went 4/11 with a walk yesterday. They also came up big in the Nats rally. Along with those guys, backup catcher Riley Adams hit a massive three run homer yesterday.

However, those first three are the real difference makers at the bottom of the order. Simply put, Alex Call needs more playing time. The Nationals inconsistent can’t afford to have a bat like Call out of the lineup. Whether that is in right field, or even DH, Call needs to play. He is hitting .327 with a .429 on base percentage so far this season. Call’s swing decisions are the best I have seen in a Nats uniform since Juan Soto, the man barely chases.

However, it is not just him. I wrote about Dylan Crews’ resurgence earlier, and he is showing the magic that made him so highly touted. Crews is red hot at the plate, and just plays the game so hard. His energy can be contagious.

One unsung hero the last couple weeks has been Jose Tena. Since Paul DeJong went down, Tena has really stepped up. He is hitting .357 in his last seven games and .306 overall. Tena is a pure hitter that is fun to watch when he is hot, which he is right now. Since he got regular playing time, Tena is 10/28.

These guys have really lengthened the Nationals lineup. You know what you are going to get from guys like Wood, Abrams, and even Lowe. However, they need more guys hitting than just that. While the offense has been hit or miss lately, with Lowe slowing down a bit, these guys have provided a spark.

With Luis Garcia Jr. heating up after his slow start, Josh Bell is really the only Nat who isn’t contributing much. I get that Bell is a slow starter, but he has to get going soon, or else playing time needs to diminish for him.

I understand playing him to get him going, but Bell is hitting too high in the lineup right now. He is a black hole at the moment, but is hitting fourth or fifth nearly every game. Hopefully he can find something to get him going.

However, the Nats offense has showed a lot fight in two of the last three games. In Friday’s win, it was also the bottom of the order getting the job done. Crews and Tena both had three hits in the Nats 5-4 walk off win.

Those guys have given the Nats offense a new dimension. While the unit is still inconsistent and goes into extended lulls, it has explosive potential. We are seeing them sleep walk through large parts of the game before putting up crooked numbers quickly. A lot of that is down to the entire lineup providing a threat for pitchers.

Follow along as the Nationals look to take the series against the division leading Mets

What a wild game we witnessed yesterday and on our supposed day of rest, no less. My heartbeat definitely didn’t get the memo! This Nationals team has shown incredible growth since the start of the year, and in my mind, they’ve proven they can hang with anyone. Even on a day when Mitchell Parker didn’t have his best stuff, they still found a way to battle and come out on top.

Today, we’ll see a few changes to the lineup. Big man Josh Bell will get the day off, his third missed game of the season, with C.J. Wood sliding into the DH spot. That opens the door for Jacob Young to get back into action after his day off yesterday. Keibert Ruiz also returns to the lineup after getting a breather.

On the mound, it’ll be right-hander Trevor Williams. In his five starts this season, he has yet to record an out in the sixth inning, but he’s been steady. In his last outing, he allowed just one run on six hits. While Williams doesn’t tend to pitch deep into games, his last two starts have both been quality outings and the Nationals will look for another solid effort from him today.

As for the Mets, there’s a flurry of changes today. Jesse Winker steps in for Starling Marte at the DH spot, while catcher Francisco Alvarez returns to the lineup for just his third game of the season. In the outfield, Jeff McNeil, not exactly a fan favorite at the moment gets the start in center field, also marking his third appearance this season.

On the mound, the Mets will turn to Griffin Canning. Through 26 innings this year, Canning has posted a strong 3.13 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He’s riding some momentum as well, having won each of his last three starts.

The Washington Nationals split their series against the Mets, winning two thrillers and losing in two stinkers. Now it is time for more divisional play as the Nats take on the Phillies in their first trip to Citizens Bank Park of the season.

It will be best on best as MacKenzie Gore takes on Zack Wheeler in a rematch of their Opening Day duel. The Nationals lineup will be very similar to the one they put out on Opening Day. The only alteration is Jose Tena, who is in for the injured Paul DeJong. Despite his hot bat, Alex Call is out of the lineup in favor of the all glove no bat Jacob Young.

MLB Draft 2025: MLB Pipeline updates their draft rankings

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Florida State v Tennessee

Steven Branscombe-Imagn Images

MLB Pipeline updated their draft rankings. It will be fascinating to see who the Nationals take at the top of the draft

MLB Pipeline released their updated top 150 rankings for the 2025 MLB Draft. There is a lot of uncertainty around the top of a class where the Nationals are picking number one. This is very different from the other two times the Nats had the number one pick, when Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper were the obvious selections.

I have written about eight different players so far in my quest to find a number one pick in this class. Most years there are not this many guys with a chance to go number one. Pipeline wrote in length about the uncertainty at the top of the class.

For MLB Pipeline, Ethan Holliday remains their number one prospect. His hold on that number 1 spot is tenuous. Holliday has impressive power and those family bloodlines. However, there are some swing and miss concerns, but those are not on the level of a guy like Elijah Green. Holliday also has very impressive plate discipline.

While it would be nice to have an obvious 1-1, this uncertainty gives the Nats a lot of options. They could go under slot, like they did last year with Seaver King. In fact, it is very likely they will go under slot. Since 2012, Spencer Torkelson is the only number one pick to get slot or above. The question is how far under slot will the Nats go.

Last and only

Crazy Tork is the only player to even sniff slot pic.twitter.com/zBpNybaRDs

— Ethan Hullihen (@EthanHullihen) April 22, 2025

One blurb of the Pipeline piece that intrigued me was when they said the Nationals are believed to be focusing most of their efforts on Holliday, Seth Hernandez, Jamie Arnold, and Aiva Arquette. This news could narrow the playing field in the race for the first pick.

Pipeline has Hernandez as their second best player. Hernandez has a chance to be the first ever high school right hander to be selected first overall. While there is some risk that comes with that, recent highly drafted high school righties like Hunter Greene and Jackson Jobe show the upside.

Jamie Arnold is seen as the safest player in the draft. The southpaw is close to the big leagues and his deceptive low release draws Chris Sale comparisons. Pipeline has him as their number 3 player.

Aiva Arquette is the highest ranked college bat in the draft, so it makes sense why the Nats are looking at him closely. He is having a huge year at Oregon State after transferring from Washington. Arquette is 6’5, has big power and a chance to stick at shortstop. That along with his production is an exciting package.

This race for number one is going to be a fascinating watch as the year progresses. While there is no clear cut number one, there are so many ways the Nats can go. With a high school hitter, a high school pitcher, a college pitcher, and a college hitter, every demographic has a player that could go number one.

It is up to Mike Rizzo along with Danny Haas and Brad Ciolek to comb through the uncertainty and find the best guy. All four candidates have their pros and cons. This pick will tell us so much about what this front office is thinking and what their vision for the team is.

Nationals Prospects: Daylen Lile is the Nats most underrated prospect

Syndication: Wilmington News Journal

William Bretzger/Delaware News Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Daylen Lile is raking in the upper levels of the minors and could be ready for the big leagues later this season

When it comes to Washington Nationals prospects, Daylen Lile flies under the radar. He is far from the biggest name in the Nats system, especially among outfielders. However, his performances so far this season demand our attention.

In 21 games at Double-A, Lile hit .319 with an .845 OPS. This is made all the more impressive when you account for the fact that Harrisburg is a tough place to hit. Lile made that place his playground and got rewarded with a promotion to Triple-A. In his first at bat for Rochester, Lile smoked a triple into the gap to get the Red Wings started.

Daylen Lile's first Triple-A hit is a triple to lead off the game!! pic.twitter.com/sgUAD2iZ68

— Rochester Red Wings (@RocRedWings) April 30, 2025

Despite sharing an outfield with guys like Robert Hassell and Andrew Pinckney, Lile is now the best prospect in that Rochester outfield. The 22 year old was drafted in the second round back in 2021. After missing what would have been his first pro season with Tommy John Surgery, it has been a steady climb for the young outfielder.

He is not the flashiest player in the world, but Lile really knows how to hit. There is not a ton of power, but he is showing more doubles power this year and has 15-18 homer upside. Lile already has 11 extra base hits this season, which is a good sign.

The biggest thing Lile needs to prove is that he is not a tweener. A skeptic would say he does not quite have the glove for center field or the offensive thump needed to play in a corner. However, he is answering the bell so far this season.

Another element of Lile’s game is his athleticism. He has at least above average if not plus speed. That is shown by his 24 triples and 56 steals in his Minor League career. The triples are very impressive. He had 10 in each of his first two seasons and already has four this year.

In many ways, Lile is what people think/want Robert Hassell to be. He is a sweet swinging left handed hitter who doesn’t strike out much and is growing into his power. While he has not taken a ton of walks this year, he has shown patience in the past.

I think Daylen Lile has a real shot to make an impact in the big leagues in the second half of the season. Yes, he needs to perform in AAA, but his bat has translated wherever he has gone so far. In his first game at the new level, Lile tripled and walked, so the early returns look good.

If Jacob Young continues to struggle at the plate, it would be fun to see an outfield with James Wood in left, Dylan Crews in center and Daylen Lile in right. The 22 year old really deserves more love. A lot of Nats prospects have the upside, but aren’t able to perform. However, Lile has just hit wherever he has been.

There is some Adam Eaton in Lile’s game, with his smooth stroke, gap power and solid defense in a corner. The Nats need some steady players in their lineup and I think Lile can be that.

There are a lot of young outfielders to compete with in the Nats organization, but Daylen Lile is moving his way up the pecking order. For me, he is the third best young outfielder long term behind Wood and Crews. He is the Nationals most underrated prospect, but with how he is hitting, Daylen Lile won’t be flying under the radar much longer.

Series Preview: Washington Nationals vs Cincinnati Reds

MLB: Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies

Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals (14-18) are trying to comeback from a series loss and will take on the Cincinnati Reds (17-15) for a three-game series.

After losing three straight, Washington salvaged what they could against a star-studded Philadelphia squad, winning 4-2 on Thursday. However, things aren’t going to get easier, playing a Cincinnati Reds team that has won six of their last eight. Cincinnati is inching closer and closer to potentially having a division lead in a competitive National League Central, while Washington is fighting to stay out of last place in the National League East.

Washington throughout the season has shown flashes of being a winning ball club with impressive series wins against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and more recently the Baltimore Orioles. A pitching staff led by MacKenzie Gore, pieces of the starting rotation have exceeded expectations. Right-hander Jake Irvin and southpaw Mitchell Parker are consistently putting up quality starts. However, the bullpen has been Washington’s downfall, losing many close games this season. An injury-riddled offense has shown signs of life with James Wood and Nathaniel Lowe playing well. With uncertainty at third base and centerfield, the back half of Washington’s lineup has been disappointing.

Cincinnati started the 2025 on a rough start, starting 3-7 through their first ten games of the season. They are 5-2 in their last seven games, recently dropping a series against division rival St. Louis Cardinals. Cy Young contender Hunter Greene and left-hander Nick Lodolo have been impressive for a questionable rotation heading into 2025. Led by superstar Elly De La Cruz, Cincinnati has been competitive, hoping for long-term success.

Game One - Friday, 6:10 EDT

Before the season, I was asked who I believed the most improved Washington National would be this season and I said Mitchell Parker. I am proud to say that at this point in the season, I am correct. A rotation desperate for starting pitching, Parker has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, rocking a 2.65 ERA as a ground ball pitcher. Parker struggled in his last start, giving up a season-high six earned runs and five walks. The second-year southpaw should return to his steady, reliable form with a good start to this series.

It’s hard to improve off an All-Star season, and that is what Hunter Greene is doing in 2025. Greene posted a 2.75 ERA in 2024 and is currently rocking a 2.70 ERA proving doubters wrong who said he was due for regression. Early in Greene’s career, Greene suffered with multiple injuries and has since been able to stay on the mound consistently, even with a high-velocity pitch arsenal.

This matchup should be a fun one, due to both starters finding success in completely different ways.

Game Two - Saturday, 6:40 EDT

After a successful short sample size in 2024, Williams resigned from Washington thinking he could build off his success. However, Williams has regressed big-time in 2025. With a 5.70 ERA and coming off a rough start against the Mets, Williams’ time in the Washington starting rotation could come to an end sooner rather than later.

Nick Lodolo is coming off one of the best starts of his career against the Colorado Rockies, going seven innings and allowing two hits with nine strikeouts. This has been Lodolo’s season, rocking a 2.25 ERA, a career-best so far. Lodolo was expected to break out last season, but now this season while being fully healthy and his command is the best it has ever been, Cincinnati has potentially found their one-two punch for the future in Greene and Lodolo.

Game Three - Sunday, 4:10 EDT

MacKenzie Gore is on pace for a career season in Washington, proving and showing his ace potential. Gore has been a quality start machine this year and is currently leading all of baseball in total strikeouts with 59. With career highs across the board, Gore has exceeded the high expectations that Nationals fans put on him this past off-season. Even when the biggest question mark is the pitching staff as a whole, Nationals fans are pleased to have MacKenzie Gore on the roster.

Nick Martinez has a very unique story. Playing in Japan from 2018-2021, Martinez came back to the MLB as a reliever and a spot starter for San Diego. However, in 2024, Martinez started the season as a reliever and was then pushed into the starting rotation later in the season and flourished in the new role. Finishing the season with a career-best 3.10 ERA, Martinez was given a full-time starting role for 2025. Even though the command has dropped off since 2024, Martinez still has an incredible story and it’s hard not to root for these kinds of stories.

While approaching a quarter through the season, this is where the team finally figures out who they are and where they stand against the rest of the league. Washington has been a confusing team to this point, struggling to find consistency in the offense and the pitching staff. I believe changes will be made soon, but with an important series against the Reds, some decisions could made sooner rather than later.

Both teams are looking to bounce back coming off of division play.

With almost a quarter of the season played, The Washington Nationals still feel lost, trying to find their identity. With a young bulls and veterans sprinkled in the lineup, the offense has been inconsistent. The most impressive part of the team this season has been the starting rotation, with guys like Mitchell Parker and Jake Irvin impressing while MacKenzie Gore is proving Nats fans right about a potential breakout season.

Cincinnati started off their season 3-7 through their first ten games. Now at 17-15, Cincinnati is in play for the National League Central and a potential Wild Card spot. Led by Hunter Greene and Elly De La Cruz, this young squad is similar to Washington is some ways. While both teams rely heavily on their young talent, Cincinnati has a much improved bullpen in 2025.

Headlined by C.J. Abrams and James Wood, this has been a consistent lineup for Washington. A struggling Josh Bell will need to start performing or Washington could have to make some major adjustments in this lineup.

Mitchell Parker struggled in his last start, giving up six runs in a major loss. Parker has been stellar this season, posting a 2.65 ERA to this point.

The Washington Nationals need a new hitting coach

85083458.0.jpg

Another year, another lackluster offense for Darnell Coles. It is time for a new voice in the room

Ever since Darnell Coles became the Nationals hitting coach in 2022, the Nats offense has been a bottom 10 unit year in and year out. Yes, some of this has to do with a lack of talent, but the Nats still have a .683 OPS with an offense that was supposed to be much improved.

The Darnell Coles experience has been a maddening one for fans, and this year has been no different. A staple of the Nats offense under Coles has been too many ground balls. This season the Nats lead all of baseball in ground ball percentage at 50.5%. They are the only team hitting the ball on the ground over half the time. Last season they were second in ground ball rate at 46.4%.

The Nationals pounding the ball into the ground is not a one year anomaly, it is a feature of Darnell Coles’ offensive philosophy. Many Nats fans long for the days of Kevin Long. One thing that turned me off about Coles in the early years was how he didn’t mesh with Juan Soto, which seems hard to do. Soto had the worst stretch of his Nats career under Coles, seeing his hard hit rate plummet in 2022.

A lot of hitters have seemed to drown or take a long time to make adjustments under Coles. The Nats also have gotten no hit twice in the past two years, something they had never done before prior to Coles’ tenure.

Coles getting to come back for this year probably should not have happened, given the Nats lackluster offensive production in 2024. However, he should definitely be gone after this slow start.

Mike Rizzo mentioned that Dylan Crews was making adjustments mechanically and that led to his good stretch. Do we trust Coles to keep up those adjustments? Crews already seems to be going back to bad habits, going 0 for his last 14. Is Darnell Coles the guy to fix Dylan Crews, history says he is probably not that guy.

When Darnell Coles was introduced, he talked about dominating the strike zone through game planning, good decision making and situational awareness. Have the Nationals done any of this in his tenure? I have not seen that, but I have seen a lot of first pitch ground outs.

I do not like calling for people’s jobs, especially when they haven’t had a chance to implement their philosophies. However, Coles has had plenty of time and the results remain the same, even now with the Nats having more talent in their lineup.

Only once in his four seasons has a Darnell Coles offense had an OPS above .700. That was in 2023. After the offense stagnated in 2024 with what was supposed to be a more talented lineup, Coles should be thankful to still have his job.

The pressure should be ratcheted up on the Nationals hitting coach, with the offense still struggling to produce despite a lot of highly touted young talent being in the lineup. At the end of the day, you have to ask the question, is Darnell Coles the guy to elevate the young hitters in the Nationals lineup. I think most Nats fans would say no to that question. For that reason, the team needs a new voice to guide their young hitters.

Follow along as the Nationals look to avoid another series loss on the road

There is rain in the forecast in Cincinnati, but the game is still scheduled to be played as of now. Last night, the Nats offense struggled against Reds ace Hunter Greene. Now they are facing another highly drafted Reds pitcher in Nick Lodolo.

After much discussion, Keibert Ruiz is finally getting a day off with Riley Adams behind the plate. Josh Bell is also out of the lineup, which means James Wood will DH and Alex Call will play left field. Amed Rosario will get the start at third with a lefty on the bump. Trevor Williams will get the call on the mound.

For the Reds, Tyler Stephenson will get his first start behind the plate this season after a big night in his season debut at DH. Jake Fraley will get action with a right handed pitcher on the mound. Left hander Nick Lodolo has gotten off to a very fast start this season and will look to continue that against the Nats.

Follow along as the Nats look for a series win against the Reds

After a big win last night, the Nationals are looking to win the series against the Reds this afternoon. Hopefully the offense can remain loud this afternoon after putting up double digits in the run column.

Interestingly, Amed Rosario remains in the two hole after a big night. This is despite the fact that a righty is on the mound. Rosario is at his best against left handed pitching. Josh Bell remains out of the lineup, meaning James Wood will DH and Alex Call will play left field. Ace MacKenzie Gore will take the mound and try to lead his team to a series win.

The Reds have an interesting lineup. Two of their outfielders, Gavin Lux and Santiago Espinal are traditionally infielders. Nick Martinez will take the mound for the Reds. After a good year, he accepted the qualifying offer to stay with the team.

Cleveland Guardians vs Washington Nationals Series Preview

A look at the Nationals matchup with the always solid Cleveland Guardians

Guardians Bring Clutch Wins and Questionable Pitching to D.C.

The Cleveland Guardians roll into D.C. sitting second in the American League Central at 20-14. Each of their last nine victories has come by two runs or fewer. That’s especially funky considering their bullpen hasn’t exactly been lights out, with a 4.18 ERA in the 9th inning or later. The Guardians are just finding ways to win.

  • Pitching: Cleveland’s staff has been average at best. Their 4.20 team ERA ranks 18th in the majors. They’ve allowed the 12th most runs (154), 11th most home runs (40), and are right in the middle of the pack with 283 strikeouts (15th overall).
  • Hitting: The offense hasn’t been dominant, but it’s starting to heat up. Cleveland is batting .232 as a team (8th worst in MLB), yet they’ve managed to hit 38 home runs (12th most) and score 131 runs (9th fewest).

Key Players to Watch

  • José Ramírez made his return to the lineup after dealing with a sprained right ankle. He’s slashing .265/.318/.754 with 5 home runs and 15 RBIs.
  • Kyle Manzardo, the rookie acquired in the Aaron Civale trade, leads the team with 8 homers and 20 RBIs.
  • Steven Kwan has been Cleveland’s most consistent bat, slashing an impressive .333/.384/.851.

Head-to-Head History

These teams have been evenly matched in recent years, splitting their last six meetings. The Nationals hold a slight edge all-time, 13-12 across 25 games. Their most recent series came in June 2024, when Cleveland took two of three. Cleveland’s biggest recent win was a 7-1 rout on May 31, while the Nationals’ last major victory in the series was an 8-2 blowout back in 2019.

Game 1 - Monday, 6:45 PM

  • CLE starter: Luis Ortiz Jr - 5 GS, 4.78 ERA, 36 SO and 1.41 WHIP
  • WAS starter: Jake Irvin - 7 GS, 4.01 ERA, 33 SO and 1.13 WHIP

In Ortiz’s last outing he threw 6.1 scoreless innings only allowing 3 hits and striking out 5 against the Twins. Which was best outing to date this season. In his last four outings he has struck out 31 batters.

Irvin in his last start against the Phillies got knocked up, after having three straight solid outings. He still managed to go six innings against the Phillies, Irvin is good at eating innings. Hopefully this next start against Cleveland Irvin can settle back to himself.

Game 2 - Tuesday, 6:45 PM

  • CLE starter: Ben Lively - 7 GS, 3.72 ERA, 25 SO and 1.27 WHIP
  • WAS starter: Brad Lord - 5 GS, 4.43 ERA, 17 SO and 1.66 WHIP

Lively threw 5.2 scoreless innings against the Twins in his last start. This season so far for Lively has been very up and down. He has held opponents scoreless in three of his seven starts.

Lord got his first win in his career vs the Phillies, keeping them off the board through the first four innings. He then proceeded to give up to give up a couple of runs later in the game but it did not matter. Still only going maximum 5 innings as he only through 69 pitches. With Michael Soroka nearing his return from the injured list Lord’s days are numbered in the rotation.

Game 3 - Wednesday, 12:05 PM

The starters for both teams have yet to be announced for Wednesday. For the Nats, this would be Mitchell Parker’s turn in the rotation. However, with Michael Soroka’s return looking imminent after an 11 strikeout rehab start, this could be his return start.

Parker has had a couple rough starts in a row where his command has been shaky. Maybe this could be a chance to give him a breather and iron out some things mechanically. We will see who gets the ball for the Guardians on Wednesday.

A big home stand would really help the Nationals in their road back to .500. The Nats have played well at home, with a 9-7 record. If they keep up their good home play, the 16-19 Nats could start to make some real noise.

Follow along as the Nats come back home to take on the gritty Guardians

The Washington Nationals wrapped up a successful series with the Reds, winning two out of three games. Now they will face another Ohio team in the Cleveland Guardians. This time the Nats will be at home.

I like the look of the Nats lineup today. Alex Call will be in the two hole, playing left field. James Wood will DH for the third straight game with Josh Bell nursing a stiff hamstring. After Amed Rosario got most of the action this weekend, Jose Tena will be in there against a right handed pitcher. After having a rough start where his fastball velocity was the lowest of his career, Jake Irvin will look to bounce back.

We will not be seeing old friend Lane Thomas who is out with a wrist injury. However, there are some dangerous bats in the Guardians lineup. Jose Ramirez has been one of the best players in baseball for the better part of a decade now. Steven Kwan is one of the best contact hitters in the game. DH Kyle Manzardo is also having a breakout campaign. Former Pirate Luis Ortiz will be on the mound for Cleveland.

Hopefully the weather cooperates tonight and the Nats can win their third straight game. After a solid road trip, the Nats are 16-19, with .500 within touching distance again. While the Guardians are 20-14, their negative run differential suggests they are not as intimidating as their record suggests. If the Nats play at their best, they can win some ballgames against these guys. Let’s get this curly W!

Final game of a three-game series as the Washington Nationals (18-20) try to defend their home turf against the Cleveland Guardians (21-15)

As the Washington Nationals fight to get back to a winning record, they have an opportunity to win back-to-back series and only be two games under .500. Even after a brutal 9-1 loss yesterday, Washington is slowly improving, winning four of their last six.

Though the pitching matchup isn’t the flashiest, Washington hopes former All-Star Michael Soroka can revert to his Spring Training form and find a way into a starting rotation that desperately needs depth.

Michael Soroka, now playing for this third team in three years, has not produced the same production since his 2019 All-Star selection. Soroka’s last start came in late March, where he gave up four runs in five innings, and has been sidelined ever since due to a bicep injury. However, his last rehab start proved encouraging, striking out eleven batters.

C.J. Abrams is off to a great start to the 2025 season and he leads off for this Nationals lineup. Keibert Ruiz is back in the lineup after a much deserved off day. The offense was disappointing yesterday but with a win today Washington could impress by winning against a competitive Cleveland squad.

Lefty Logan Allen has been a consistent starter for Cleveland the past three seasons and has produced well. Allen’s career ERA is 4.57. However, Allen has been struggling with command this season, walking fifteen batters and only having twenty-two strikeouts. In his last start, Allen pitched just over five innings, giving up two earned runs, and Cleveland was dealt the loss.

After a big win yesterday, Cleveland has some made some changes to the lineup. Kwan, Ramirez, Santana, and Arias find themselves in the same spot in the lineup as yesterday. However, young catcher Bo Naylor is back in the lineup and Nolan Jones and Angel Martinez have dropped since yesterday. Cleveland will hope with these changes their offense can keep momentum from yesterday.

Nationals Alex Call is hitting like an All-Star and needs to be in the lineup every day

MLB: Washington Nationals at Pittsburgh Pirates

Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Davey Martinez needs to figure out how to get Alex Call in the lineup every day, he makes the team better

Alex Call is a pure hitter, it is simple as that. The guy has the most consistently quality at bats on the team, and that includes James Wood. Obviously he does not have that kind of power, but Call makes the right swing decision nearly every time. He also makes the Washington Nationals a much better team.

Whether he plays right field, left field, or even DH, Alex Call needs to be one of the first names on the lineup card for Davey Martinez. It almost feels like his quality at bats can be contagious at times. Guys see him lay off borderline pitches and find it in themselves to do the same.

Alex Call’s swing decisions are legitimately Juan Soto level. He has a 98th percentile chase rate, a 98th percentile whiff rate, a 98th percentile K%, and a 97th percentile walk percentage. That is about as good as you can get in those numbers.

That is why Call is hitting .348 with an .890 OPS. Honestly, he is just picking up where he left off last year before his injury. When Call got the call in 2024, he hit .343 with a .950 OPS. This is now about 170 AB’s of Call hitting over .340 with an OPS deep into the .400’s. While that is not a massive sample size, it is not a tiny one either. It is time to consider that Alex Call is simply one of the best hitters on the team.

With the way guys like Dylan Crews and Josh Bell are playing, it is getting harder to excuse having them in the lineup over Call. I get that they are bigger names and the Nats have more invested in them, but isn’t the goal here to win ball games. Alex Call is easily one of the best nine.

Honestly, a guy like Crews should be in Call’s hip pocket every day asking him about hitting and his approach. I can’t believe I am saying this, but Dylan Crews needs to be more like Alex Call.

However, I think the Nats should give Call an extended look at DH. While he does not have the traditional power profile of a DH, his bat is more than good enough for the position. Call has also struggled a bit with the glove this year. He does not seem to be moving quite as well after his injury last year. Are we even sure a “hot” Josh Bell would be able to produce the way Call is right now?

Simply put, Alex Call is awesome to watch as a hitter. He has twice as many walks as strikeouts, with 16 free passes to 8 punch outs. That is simply a beautiful thing to watch. It sometimes feels like Call is a supercomputer at the plate with the pitches he is laying off. Nobody is pitching around him, yet he still is walking with the best of them.

It seems like Davey is coming around to this, but Alex Call needs to be an everyday player. No more playing him twice a week, or sitting him for extended periods. Along with CJ Abrams, James Wood and Nathaniel Lowe, Alex Call should be one of the first names on the lineup card. Putting Alex Call in the lineup should be something Davey Martinez does automatically. He is just too good of a hitter and the team is visibly better when Alex Call is playing.

There is something to be said for a guy who has had nothing handed to him and has had to grind for every morsel of playing time. Alex Call is that guy, and he has earned the right to be in the lineup every day.

The Washington Nationals have an organizational bullpen problem

MLB: Game Two-Cleveland Guardians at Washington Nationals

James A. Pittman-Imagn Images

The Washington Nationals bullpen issues extend beyond the big league level

It is no secret, the Washington Nationals bullpen is not good. In fact, it is one of the worst baseball has seen in recent memory. The unit has a jaw dropping ERA of 7.22 after struggling mightily in the series against the Guardians. However, there is no help waiting in the wings.

When bullpens are struggling, teams often turn to their Triple-A teams to find diamonds in the rough. A lot of times you can find nasty relievers by just giving relatively unknown guys a shot. These days there are a lot of players that have nasty stuff just waiting in Triple-A. However, the Nationals seem to have none of these guys. The bullpen in Triple-A Rochester is just as bad as the big league bullpen.

And to makes matters worse, it's not like the Nationals have anyone who can immediately replace their current set of relievers.

Rochester's bullpen ERA: 7.05, last in the International League. https://t.co/6fmdAdRft6

— Andrew Golden (@andrewcgolden) May 7, 2025

This is a serious problem and a failure from management. For many organizations, bullpen arms are the easiest thing to find. All you really need to do is find guys with lively arms that have a somewhat decent idea of where it is going. Guys nobody has ever heard of become star relievers every year.

Have you ever heard of Justin Sterner? No, I did not think so. He has not allowed a run in 18 appearances this year for the A’s. The A’s also developed Lucas Erceg, a reliever that had formerly flamed out as a third base prospect. They traded him to the Royals for a strong package. Those two pitchers have the lowest xwOBA against of any pitchers who have faced 50 batters.

Mike Rizzo simply isn’t finding these guys often enough. Yes, he has gotten some gems before, notably Kyle Finnegan and Robert Garcia, who is having a great year in Texas. However, these finds are few and far between.

For every Finnegan there are more Trevor Rosenthal’s, Colin Poche’s and Lucas Sims. When the Nats were in a contending window, it seemed like they had to scramble to rebuild the bullpen every year. It does not have to be like this.

A lot of teams wish they could have more bullpen arms, but most do not have full blown bullpen crisis’ as often as the Nats do in the Mike Rizzo era. Mike Rizzo has plenty of strengths as an executive. He has a very strong track record in trades and has had plenty of wins in free agency.

However, I sometimes wonder if his weaknesses are being magnified more in this era of baseball. Player development and bullpen’s are as important now as they have ever been. These areas are not Rizzo’s strengths. His track record in the draft has been spotty at best and his poor bullpen building has led to full blown crisis’ multiple seasons.

He can still pull off some great deals. The Juan Soto trade gave the Nationals a great young core. His signing and trade of Jeimer Candelario was great business, as was the Lane Thomas experience. However, this roster is heavily reliant on guys that have come via trade or free agency rather than home grown talent.

Who is the Nationals best truly homegrown player right now? Maybe Mitchell Parker or Luis Garcia Jr.? Those are nice players, but that lack of a home grown core is a bit of a problem. You need guys that come up all the way through your organization.

They have not been able to do that well enough. The organizational depth has not even been there. A couple days ago, they had to sign two arms including former big leaguer Adrian Sampson just so they could clean up the Rochester pitching staff. While there have been some injuries, that is not the best look. There should be someone in the organization waiting in the wings.

The lack of options on the farm is a big reason why this bullpen remains relatively unchanged. The relievers posting an ERA over 7 in Triple-A are not going to be any better than the guys with a 7 ERA in the big leagues.

There have been a lot of positive stories this year. James Wood is becoming one of the best hitters in baseball. MacKenzie Gore and CJ Abrams are both taking big steps towards becoming stars. However, some of that is being overshadowed by the organizations inability to build out the roster. This offseason the Nationals failed to find any competence in their bullpen, both at the big league level or on the farm. Mike Rizzo has done a lot of great things in DC, but he failed in a big way here.

Will the real Mitchell Parker please stand up

MLB: Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds

Katie Stratman-Imagn Images

Mitchell Parker’s inconsistency has made him a bit of an enigma, how good is he really?

When you think about the Washington Nationals youth going forward towards the future. A lot of the focus shines on James Wood, C.J. Abrams, MaKenzie Gore and Dylan Crews. One guy that gets left out of the mix is 25-year-old Mitchell Parker.

The Nationals selected Parker in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft, with the 153rd overall pick. The Lefty worked his way up the minors and made his debut last season in mid April when Josiah Gray got hurt. Parker appeared in 29 games, all as a starting pitcher. He compiled a 7 and 10 win-loss record with a 4.29 ERA over 151 innings pitched. During that span, he allowed 154 hits, 82 runs (72 earned), issued 43 walks, and struck out 133 batters.

Last season, Parker allowed one run or fewer in just 10 of his 29 starts. This year, he’s already done it 4 times in just 7 starts.

Hot Start to 2025

To start 2025, Parker has been a different pitcher. Parker opened the 2025 season looking like a budding stud. Through his first six starts, he posted a 2.65 ERA, highlighted by eight shutout innings against the Orioles on April 22, during which he retired the final 17 batters he faced. His command had noticeably improved from his rookie year.

Parker was attacking the zone with confidence and was showing that he can go deep into games. He was locating his fastball (93 MPH below league average), keeping hitters off balance with his breaking stuff, and generating plenty of weak contact. What is special about Parker, is that no body else in Major League Baseball has a higher arm angle (60.5°), making his delivery hard to pick up for hitters.

Recent Struggles

However, the past two starts have shown signs of regression. On May 2 against the Reds, Parker issued four walks, several of which turned into runs. His ERA climbed from 2.65 to 3.48 over 41.1 innings pitched, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio dropped to just 1.25. What is making him struggle over his most recent starts is his command and movement on certain pitches. Although he boasts a WHIP of 1.21, which is still respectable, the trend of late is concerning.

This isn’t a new issue, Parker had a 13.1% walk rate in the minors from 2022 to 2023. Early in 2025, it looked like he had turned a corner, but recent starts suggest that old habits may be creeping back in.

Parker’s game isn’t built around strikeouts. His current 4.57 K/9 rate (21 strikeouts in 41.1 IP) is well below league average, but he makes up for it by generating weak contact. He has a 50% ground ball rate and elite 2.7% barrel rate (90th percentile). Which shows that when does locate, he is super effective.

Conclusion

So what could be the cause of his recent struggles? Maybe it’s early fatigue. Parker has already thrown 41.1 innings in 2025 and has gone six or more innings in five of his seven starts. His splitter and slider help him create grounders, which are the two pitches he is not seeing movement enough on.

Maybe it’s just the lineup ? In his most recent starts out of the teams he had faced, the Mets have the 5th best batting average against lefties this year at (.274) but the Reds don’t, Cincinnati is ranked 25th (.218). Boiling this down to command.

Unfortunately, the Mets roughed him up but if he doesn’t walk four batters against the Reds, I think we aren’t having as big of a discussion. Parker is right on the cusp of being at least a solid 2 or 3 guy in the rotation. Parker still has so much more room to grow, I’m just hoping what we saw to start the year was not a fluke.
