TNF: Eagles vs Cowboys Game Thread

gettyimages-2229027560.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 1. The 2025 NFL season kicks off tonight as the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys in an NFC East showdown. The Eagles look to get off to a fast start defending their Super Bowl championship, while the Cowboys look to turn the page on a disappointing 7-10 campaign last season.

The Philadelphia Eagles have a deep, talented team that finished in the top eight in the NFL last season both on offense and on defense. The Eagles offense features a formidable offensive line, a top dual threat quarterback in Jalen Hurts, the reigning NFL rushing champion in Saquon Barkley, and a couple of top wide receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. This loaded offense can beat you on the ground and through the air. The Cowboys will have their hands full trying to stop this multi-pronged attack.

The Dallas Cowboys feature a bottom five defense from last season and they just traded away their best defensive player, Micah Parsons. On paper the Cowboys defense looks completely overmatched against the Eagles offense. Their best hope for pulling off an upset to open the season rests with the Cowboys offense. After losing quarterback Dak Prescott to injury for the majority of last season, the Cowboys have a healthy Prescott looking to make up for lost time this year. The Cowboys added the talented wide receiver George Pickens to be the running mate to perennial Pro Bowl receiver CeeDee Lamb. The trio of Prescott, Pickens and Lamb should make for a dangerous air attack in Dallas. Perhaps that will be enough to keep this game in reach against the Eagles.

It’s the Eagles and the Cowboys tonight on Thursday Night Football to open the 2025 NFL season. Enjoy the game everybody.

FNF: Chargers vs Chiefs Game Thread

gettyimages-2188416601.jpg

Tonight we have a rare Friday Night Football game. The Los Angeles Chargers are technically the home team in Brazil, where they face off against their division rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs.

The headliner for the Chiefs is their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes, however, has not played like a superstar for a couple of years. Last year the Mahomes-led Chiefs offense was hardly intimidating, finishing 16th in the NFL in yards gained and 15th in points scored. Mahomes passed for less than 4000 yards and the Chiefs passing offense ranked just 21st in the NFL in net passing yards per attempt. This was far from the juggernaut offense we have seen from Mahomes and the Chiefs in years past. Instead, it was the Chiefs defense that carried the team, ranking 4th in the NFL in points allowed. Can Mahomes return to his superhuman ways? We’ll find out, starting tonight against the Chargers.

Last year Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh led an impressive turnaround for the franchise in his first season on the job. Rebounding from an awful 5 – 12 season in 2023, Harbaugh led the Chargers to an 11 – 6 record and a playoff berth. Now, in season two, Harbaugh and the Chargers look to build on last season’s success and take the next step, a division championship. Last year the Chargers had the NFL’s best defense in terms of points allowed. If they can somehow match that performance this year (a tall order, to be sure), that should go a long way towards emerging with a division title. There’s no time like the present to begin that quest. A victory over the Chiefs tonight would start the season with a bang for the Chargers. It won’t be easy, however. Beating the Chiefs never is. The Chargers have lost seven straight to Mahomes and company. Let’s see if they can break that streak tonight in Brazil.

It’s the Chargers and the Chiefs tonight on Friday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

The game will be played in seasonably cool weather for early September in the New York metropolitan area. Cloudy skies will prevail at the start of the contest, clearing to partly cloudy skies as the game progresses. Winds will be light and variable at 5 – 10 mph out of the northwest to start the game, shifting to the west in the second half. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s to start the game, rising into the lower 70s as the game progresses. Relative humidity will be high, in the low 70s to start the game, dropping into the low 60s as the game progresses. There will be an approximately 15% chance of showers at the start of the game, decreasing to near zero as the game progresses.

This is going to be near ideal weather for players and fans alike. There should be no weather-related issues other than perhaps a slippery field left over from showers earlier in the day. Enjoy the game everyone.

Steelers 34 Jets 32: The More Things Stay the Same at Least a Few Change

imagn-27028924.jpg

You would rather start the regular season with a win than a loss. We know that.

If you need to lose, I’m not sure whether it’s better to be completely blown out or drop a coin flip game where any number of things could have changed the outcome.

The Jets experienced the latter of the latter in their 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. A game like this isn’t simple to break down.

In many ways, the Jets resembled the disjointed mess we saw take the field week after week in 2024. We knew Aaron Glenn wasn’t going to be able to fix everything wrong with this franchise in a single offseason.

Still, should we have seen coverage breakdown after coverage breakdown? How about untimely missed tackles? Then there were couple of dropped interceptions. Add in 7 penalties for 74 yards. How much can we get on the coaching staff for this? I would guess the answer is, “some,” even if we acknowledge how essential patience will be.

There was some frustrating stuff on this day. One of the team’s prized free agent acquisitions, Brandon Stephens, had a miserable game. He was one of the primary culprits in the frequent coverage busts. He was flagged for an important penalty, and he had one of the dropped interceptions.

Some penalties are unavoidable. Quincy Williams’ personal foul in the third quarter was very avoidable, and it changed the game. The Jets had all of the momentum. They led by 9 and seemed on the verge of landing a knockout blow. Williams proceeded to commit a blatant late hit that was flagged for 15 yards. It came on a first down play the Jets stopped for negative two yards. As they did all game, the Steelers took advantage of the Jets’ error and drove for a touchdown.

Xavier Gipson proceeded to fumble the ensuing kickoff, which turned into another touchdown. It was difficult to understand how Gipson made the team past cutdown day this year. It will be even more difficult to understand if he remains on the roster this time next week.

Mistake after mistake doomed the Jets in this game, and the coaching staff cannot avoid blame.

Of course, luck played a role as well. The Steelers’ game winning drive included a catch that was deflected multiple times off multiple players and ended in a 60 yard field goal.

This game also had a significant positive, and it’s a positive that could have a big impact for the Jets going forward. The offense played really well.

It goes deeper than that. The offense played really well in the way the Jets envisioned as they built their roster. This was a dominant running performance, netting 182 yards on the ground. Breece Hall looked more decisive hitting his hole than he has since his rookie season, running 19 times for 107 yards. Justin Fields chipped in 12 carries for 48 yards.

Fields also had an effective day throwing the ball, completing 16 of 22 for 218 yards. His play was so good that we might mercifully avoid a week’s worth of “The Jets should have kept Aaron Rodgers” takes even after the future Hall of Famer’s stellar 4 touchdown game against the Jets in his Steelers debut.

We have seen the entire Jets team play miserably a lot through the years. We have seen plenty of losses where the defense was a silver lining. Rare is the day where the offense has been a silver lining in a loss.

I’m not here suggesting this is any sort of “moral” victory. The Jets have to own this loss and be frustrated. But I think there’s a difference between declaring a moral victory and saying the Jets showed legitimate signs that they might be better than the experts think.

I would put the play of the offensive line at the top of this list. Fields is obviously important, but we know he is capable of high level play when he is feeling it. The question is whether he can sustain that high level play. We won’t have that answer for weeks.

The Jets offensive line meanwhile was a question mark entering the season. It certainly had a high ceiling with two recent first round picks playing tackle. But it was unproven. The Steelers have one of the more talented defensive fronts the Jets will face all year long, and the guys up front more than held their own, particularly run blocking. That is a very positive and encouraging development for a team that needs to run the ball to have success.

The offense wasn’t perfect. The unit had a chance to end the game with an effective drive late in the fourth quarter. Instead they gave the Steelers one more chance, which Pittsburgh took. The offense also wasted two timeouts on a fourth quarter touchdown drive that loomed large late in the game. Still it’s tough to complain about a unit that put up 32 points and only punted twice.

For the Jets to be successful going forward, they need to lose their 2024 tendencies. So far, so good on the offense.

Everything else needs work.

Jets open as Week 2 underdogs vs Bills

imagn-26838484.jpg

The New York Jets opened the Aaron Glenn era with a heartbreaking loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Leading most of the game, the Jets succumbed to some bad luck on a deflected pass and a 60 yard field with a little more than a minute to play. Justin Fields and the Jets offense played extremely well, while the Jets defense, especially the Jets secondary, disappointed. The Jets offensive line held up well against a stout Steelers defense and Breece Hall had one of his better performances in recent memory. Nonetheless, despite many encouraging developments on offense, the Jets fell short. The loss gave the Jets an 0-1 record to start the season.

Now the Jets face an early season showdown at home against the AFC East defending champions, the Buffalo Bills. A victory over the Bills would vault the Jets into first place in the division very early in the season. A loss would drop the Jets to the dreaded 0-2 start, both losses coming at home. Few teams recover to make the playoffs from such a start.

This shapes up as a stern early season test of the Jets’ progress. Nearly pulling off a mild upset over a middling Pittsburgh Steelers team is one thing. Actually pulling off a win against the Buffalo Bills, one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season, is another thing entirely. Getting back to playing in the post-season is vital for this struggling franchise. It may not happen this year, but a surprise early season victory over the mighty Bills would go a long way towards changing the narrative.

The Jets have had some recent success containing the Bills’ and their star quarterback Josh Allen at home. Last year the Jets lost to the Bills by just three points at home, while the Jets beat the Bills in East Rutherford in both 2023 and 2022. There is some basis for optimism for the Jets going into this challenging matchup. However, Josh Allen is coming off an epic opening week performance against the Baltimore Ravens, in which he led the Bills from a late double digit deficit to an improbable one point victory in the final seconds of the game. Allen put up an astounding 251 passing yards in the fourth quarter of that game, a performance for the ages. Even with the Jets at home, containing Allen and the Buffalo Bills will be an enormous challenge.

Let’s take a look at the current odds for this game according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The current line has the Jets home underdogs by 7 points. The game has an over/under of 45.5 points. On the moneyline the Jets are +265 while the Bills are -330.

Despite the bitter defeat on Sunday, the Jets still can move into first place in the AFC East with a win against the Bills. On the other hand, a second straight home loss would plunge the Jets into the dreaded 0-2 hole from which few teams recover to make the playoffs. If the Jets want to contend for a post-season berth, this week would be a very good time to play a complete game and pull off an upset. It won’t be easy. The Bills are an excellent team. They have dominated the division for years. We’ll soon see if the Jets are up to the task of bouncing back from a tough loss and wresting first place in the division from their upstate rivals.

Armand Membou’s Jets career is off to a great start

gettyimages-2234242256.jpg

We have some encouraging numbers from Jets first round pick Armand Membou.

Armand Membou was the only rookie offensive lineman to play at least 10 snaps and allow 0 pressures 🏰

Lowest pressure rates allowed by rookie OLs in Week 1:

1. Membou, NYJ – 0% (25 pass snaps, 0 pressures)
2. Grey Zabel, SEA – 4.2% (26/1)
3. Josh Conerly Jr., WSH – 5.4%… https://t.co/jYKtNQJMUd pic.twitter.com/LhyjPoQ3m2

— The 33rd Team (@The33rdTeamFB) September 8, 2025

Now the Jets did give Membou some help at points, but he also held up well one on one against TJ Watt, one of the league’s top pass rushers.

Armand Membou expanding to collect Watt before turning it into a run block to finish. Oh baby pic.twitter.com/9yXu20NUUm

— Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) September 8, 2025

Membou’s preseason was a bit uneven. He entered the league a player who has a lot of ability but needs some technical refinement.

The reality is that none of us should be surprised if Membou has some hiccups during his rookie season. Almost every tackle has them, even players who end up being really good in the long run.

But getting an assignment this tough in your first game and pitching a shutout shows that the sky is the limit for Membou. It also shows that he might be further along in his development than many of us anticipated. For a Jets team that needs its young tackles to play at a high level for the offense to work, it is a very encouraging sign.

2025 Secret Superstars: Justin Fields may be the franchise quarterback nobody expected

gettyimages-2234180726.jpg

Throughout the 2025 NFL season, SB Nation’s Doug Farrar will write about the game’s Secret Superstars — those players whose performances might slip under the radar for whatever reasons. It’s time to take a look at what quarterback Justin Fields did for the New York Jets in their narrow loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Far from the first-round draft bust he had been portrayed to be, Fields looked like a quarterback in (nearly) complete command of his new offense.

Justin Fields’ NFL career had devolved to the point where nobody expected much from him at all.

The 11th overall pick in the 2021 draft out of Ohio State had three seasons with the Chicago Bears in which the results were more unimpressive than not, and while it wasn’t all Fields’ fault — Chicago’s offenses at the time under Bill Lazor and Luke Getsy weren’t exactly world-beaters — but by the end of the 2023 season, the Bears were ready to move on. They did so by trading Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick, and selecting USC’s Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 draft.

We’re still waiting to see how the Williams experiment turns out, but Fields was in for another career dip in the Steel City. He got starting reps early in the season while Russell Wilson recovered from injury, and then was summarily dismissed to the role of backup and occasional gadget player when Wilson returned to the stage.

Then, it was on to the new-look New York Jets under head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, formerly the Detroit Lions’ pas game coordinator under Ben Johnson. As everybody reading this knows, the Jets haven’t exactly been on an all-time streak when it comes to great offensive minds in the building (Nathaniel Hackett? Really?), but the hope was that Engstrand could make the most out of Fields. The Jets were cautious with the equation; that’s why Fields only got a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed that made him one of the lowest-paid starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Perhaps even the Jets didn’t completely expect what they got from Fields in his debut. Against a Steelers defense that ranked eighth in DVOA last season, Fields completed 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards, one touchdown, and four explosive passes…

Outside of Josh and Lamar, there was another mobile quarterback in Week 1 who used pocket movement to extend plays and clear muddy coverage and pockets, read things out, and make the right decision over and over.

The new Justin Fields was something else. pic.twitter.com/NmLXq11cNn

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) September 8, 2025

…and as a runner (which most people would tell you is where his game starts and ends), Fields gained 48 yards and scored two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Justin Fields added huge value to the Jets' offense as a runner as opposed to a scrambler. OC Tanner Engstrand and his staff did a great job of calling designed runs for Fields, especially with red zone and conversion opportunities. pic.twitter.com/zBTGn35SaV

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) September 8, 2025

Unfortunately, Fields couldn’t quite pull the win out against his former team. With the Steelers up 34-32, the Jets had the ball with 25 seconds left in the game, with fourth-and-2, and the ball at their own 38-yard line. Fields tried to hit receiver Garrett Wilson with a short pass when he probably had the first down himself with a scramble, and Jalen Ramsey put a stop to THAT.

Tough way for the Jets to lose. Fourth-and-3 with 25 seconds left, and if the "running quarterback" keeps running, he probably bulls through for the first down. Instead, Fields throws, and Jalen Ramsey calls game against Garrett Wilson. pic.twitter.com/B7y69aVbd4

— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) September 8, 2025

Still, the Jets may have something real here, and while both Glenn and Fields said postgame that there’s no such thing as a moral victory in the building, if Fields can play this way throughout the 2025 season, you might take a two-point loss to discover that.

Week 1's leader in expected points added per dropback, pending Monday Night Football's results:

✈️ Justin Fields – 0.54

Lamar Jackson (0.46) and Justin Herbert (0.40) were the only other QBs to average at least 0.40 EPA per DB https://t.co/rsL0QtTgkf pic.twitter.com/2Wkd2f3Rfn

— The 33rd Team (@The33rdTeamFB) September 8, 2025

“I’ve said this a number of times — I just want our quarterback to be efficient,” Glenn concluded regarding his quarterback. “And he went out and he did that. With him and the run game, the way that he runs the read-option game, he makes a decision on keeping the ball — I thought he was outstanding on that.

“Some of these throws that he got out of the pocket, set himself up, got his shoulders square and delivered the ball — I thought it was outstanding. To me, those are the things that he continued to improve on, and he’s going to continue to improve on those things. It’s the first game. I expect him to continue to get better at that.”

As for Fields, he may be the most confident he’s been since he came into the NFL, which tells you all you need to know about existing in the right environment.

“It’s like … I’m kind of expecting them to score, so it’s like, yo, if they score or not, I’m ready to go,“ Fields said of his Week 1 opponent. ”And, you know, that’s the mindset that I pretty much had all game. It’s football — you know you’re going to take punches, and you’re going to punch. And that’s just how this game is, especially when two good teams go at it. So you can’t let any of that faze you — just got to keep going out there and driving the ball downfield.”

When the Jets take on the Buffalo Bills next Sunday, Fields will have another opportunity to show the new version of himself against an opposing offense even more capable of trading punches, but a defense that might not be at the same level as what Pittsburgh puts on the field. So far in Year 6 of his career, he appears to be ready for whatever challenge the NFL throws at him.

Jets’ Defensive Breakdown: An Early Bust That Made Aaron Rodgers’ Job Too Easy

imagn-27029312.jpg

Aaron Rodgers has had a number of easy touchdown passes in his 21 year career. Few were probably easier than the one he tossed in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Jets. It was the result of a coverage breakdown.

The Jets appear to be in man coverage on this play. Michael Carter II is in the slot against Ben Skowronek.

mc.png

The Steelers run a play action fake, which sucks defenders in. This includes Carter who must respect the run.

mc1.png

He does recover quickly, though, and gets his hands on Skowronek within the first five yards of the line of scrimmage.

mc2.png

Then something odd happens. Carter just lets Skowronek go and drifts back as though he is making a drop into zone coverage. Skrwronek cuts across the field by himself while the other receivers are picked up in man coverage.

mc3.png

You can see how open Skowronek is at the point Rodgers throws the ball and how far away Carter is.

mc4.png

My guess is that Carter just thought the play was zone coverage.

There is one other possibility. Defending the middle of the field is tough because the receiver can break in either direction. Sometimes a defense will put a player in the middle to provide help. Carter could be responsible for outside breaks from the slot receiver, while Jamien Sherwood would be there to help out on a break to the inside. It is possible that Sherwood got drawn too far up by the play action to provide help.

mc5.png

I don’t think that is the case, though. I will tell you why. If Sherwood’s job was to help, Carter would likely be tasked with filling in Sherwood’s spot to provide inside help if a receiver broke to the middle of the field from the other side. But Carter makes what appears to be a normal zone drop.

mc7_af7d79.png

Either way, the result for the Jets was not ideal, and it was the start of a day of busted coverages.

Jets release Xavier Gipson

imagn-27028076.jpg

The Jets are releasing wide receiver and return man Xavier Gipson.

The Jets are planning on releasing Xavier Gipson today, per source. Gipson had the costly fumble on Sunday and now the team is moving on.

— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) September 10, 2025

It was somewhat surprising that Gipson made the initial 53 man roster to begin with. Many around the team figured he would be cut. However, he momentarily held onto a spot on the team and started 2025 as the return man.

It was short lived, however, as his costly fumble in the second half apparently has led the Jets to make a change. It is also worth noting that earlier in the game, Gipson appeared to put the ball on the ground when it appeared he had not been touched down. Marcelino McCrary-Ball smartly dove on the ball to ensure the Jets retained possession. It stands to reason that mental error by Gipson also factored into the decision.

Gipson was the hero of his first career game in the NFL. His overtime punt return for a touchdown in Week 1 of 2023 won a game against the Buffalo Bills. Since that shining moment, however, Gipson has been far less successful. His fumble on Sunday was the 10th on special teams of a career that spans two years and a game. He also hasn’t developed much as a receiver.

We will see who takes over the return role in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.

Quinnen Williams has a new role, and defensive tackle has a new meaning for the Jets under Aaron Glenn

imagn-27028920.jpg

Can the same position be different?

That might sound like a silly question, but the switch from Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s defense to Aaron Glenn and Steve Wilks’ shows that the defensive tackle spot has a number of variations.

Shortly after the hiring of Glenn, I wrote an article expressing a hope that the way the Jets deployed Quinnen Williams would change under the new coaching staff.

When Williams lined up at defensive tackle last season, he was on the right side more than 90 percent of the time.

What precisely was significant about that? The Jets under Saleh frequently ran an over front. This meant that the defensive tackle on the strong side (typically the side of the formation with the tight end) lined up at the 3 technique, over the outside shoulder of a guard. The weakside defensive tackle lines up at the 1 technique, between the center and the other guard.

What exactly is the big deal about this?

Let’s take a look below.

View Link

With Williams lining up so frequently on at the right defensive tackle spot, it was easy to manipulate his deployment. If you stuck the tight end (red circle) on the right side of the offensive formation, Williams (orange circle) was at the 1 technique. That’s a spot where you are getting a double team.

The other defensive tackle (yellow circle) is much tougher to double team since he is on the outside shoulder of the guard, and the tackle has to block the edge rusher. (I know there are actually two tight ends in this picture, but the guy in the red circle is the one setting the strong side.)

Accordingly, Quinnen had to deal with double teams on 62 percent of the snaps in 2024.

As you likely know, the Jets traded for two defensive tackles, Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs at the end of the preseason. Both of them have reputations for being strong tackles who eat up blocks but aren’t necessarily great penetrators.

I was interested to see how the Jets would deploy their new defensive tackles in Week 1 against Pittsburgh.

What I found was interesting.

In the Glenn/Wilks defense, it appears there are essentially two defensive tackle positions. One group of tackles lines up at the one technique. Another group lines up at the three technique.

Quinnen Williams is almost exclusively a three technique in the new Jets defense.

I took a look at defensive alignments for the Jets on first and second down snaps. (Third down is a passing down so alignments get mixed up to maximize the pass rush.)

Williams had close to a 50/50 split lining up on the left and right sides. It didn’t matter which side he lined up. He was playing the three technique.

q3tech.png
q3tech2_6b3b6d.png

The new staff certainly seems to be focused on getting Quinnen away from double teams.

Now I’m sure people will come away with the impression Saleh Approach = Bad and Glenn Approach = Good.

I don’t think it’s quite that simple. It’s a philosophical difference. Philosophical differences aren’t a matter of better and worse. The previous Jets coaching staff had the mindset that Quinnen could beat double teams regularly, and inexpensive veterans would overachieve against the constant one on ones Quinnen drew them. It worked well when the inexpensive veterans were Sheldon Rankins and Quenton Jefferson. Not so much when it was Javon Kinlaw.

The new approach is to let the best defensive lineman on the team feast one on one. Phillips and Briggs aren’t here to make plays. Their job is to eat up two blocks and let Quinnen get to work.

I am certain Quinnen is happy with this. It should certainly make it easy to get numbers avoiding those double teams.

Just how costly was Xavier Gipson’s kick return fumble?

2192152148.jpg

On Sunday, the New York Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. While a number of factors were to blame, one player who drew quite a bit of ire was wide receiver Xavier Gipson, who was the Jets kick returner. In the 4th quarter, Gipson fumbled a kick return, setting the Steelers up for a short field and subsequent touchdown.

Xavier Gipson : 5 kick returns for 142 yards & a lost fumble; 2 punt returns for 19 yards
Kenneth Gainwell : 7 carries for 19 yards; 3 catches for 4 yards; 1 kick return for 33 yards & a forced fumble
Ben Skowronek : 22-yard TD catch & a fumble recovery pic.twitter.com/RS0BKNpgjU

— Lee Harvey (@MusikFan4Life) September 7, 2025

Compounding this mistake was the score of the game at the time, which the Jets only led by two points. The fumble set the Steelers up to take the lead late in the game. It doesn’t take a football savant to recognize how a play like this can quickly flip a game.

But how much did it flip it? Well, before the play the New York Jets had about a 70% chance of victory. Afterwards it was 43%, meaning that the fumble reduced the Jets chances of victory by 27 raw percentage points. Before the play? They were a substantial favorite to win. After the play? They were favored to lose. Ouch.

While one play never decides a game, I think it’s fair to say that this one played a big role in the eventual loss.

New York Jets Flight Connections 09/12/25

imagn-19608552.jpg

Good morning Gang Green Nation!

The New York Jets take on the Buffalo Bills at home in MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Bills are fresh off a season opening miracle comeback in a wild shootout over the Baltimore Ravens, where both teams scored 40+ points. For the Jets to have much of a chance against the Bills, the Jets defense will need to do a better job than the Ravens did. This Jets offense looked much improved last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but asking for 40+ points is a very tall order. Unfortunately for the Jets, Sauce Gardner has popped up on the injury report with a groin issue. A Jets defense with a hobbled or missing Sauce Gardner won’t stand much of a chance against Josh Allen and the Bills. Here’s hoping Gardner has a very speedy recovery leading up to the game.

Jets vs. Bills: Keon Coleman might be Josh Allen’s new most trusted target

imagn-27032123.jpg

After the trade of Stephon Diggs to the Houston Texans in 2024, the Buffalo Bills passing offense took on a committee approach. Khalil Shakir led the Bills in targets a year ago with 100. That tied him for 37th most targets in the league. No other Buffalo pass catcher had more than 75.

The approach didn’t hurt. The Bills had the second highest scoring offense in the league and went to the AFC Championship Game while Josh Allen won the MVP.

It seemed worth noting that second year wide receiver Keon Coleman had a big night in Buffalo’s Week 1 comeback win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills are looking for the second year receiver to make a big leap in year two. He posted 8 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown in the opener. It was a very promising start to year two.

It is also worth noting that Coleman led Buffalo with 11 targets.

Box score scouting can only take us so far, though. What jumped out to me when watching the film of this game was the types of throws Allen was making to Coleman.

I’ll put it this way. I don’t think you make this many throws that are going into tight windows and/or require the receiver to win after the ball is already in the air unless you really trust him.

coleman1.png
coleman2.png
coleman3.png
coleman4.png

I didn’t see Allen making these types of throws to any other Bills receiver. One game is one game. There’s only so much meaning you can put on it. It did seem like the start of a budding trust between elite quarterback and new number one option.

Another area where it seemed like Allen and Coleman had a budding chemistry was when Allen got off script. An important part of playing wide receiver for a quarterback like Allen is knowing where to get when the play breaks down, and Allen breaks the pocket. It looked like Coleman’s understanding here is growing.

For the Jets, Week 1 saw a change in Sauce Gardner’s usage. After primarily playing on the left side his first three seasons in the NFL, the newly minted $30.1 million man followed Steelers number one receiver DK Metcalf around the field for almost the entire game.

Week 1 Shadow Report per @FantasyPtsData

Only two true shadow situations in Week 1

⬜️ 2 catches, 18 yards allowed
🟩 2 pass breakups
⬜️ 90.3 PFF grade

— The 33rd Team (@The33rdTeamFB) September 8, 2025

That sort of rate shows that even in zone coverage, Gardner was going to Metcalf’s side of the field since it was the most likely way to get Metcalf going into the zone Gardner was covering.

Nobody can fairly say that Coleman is on Metcalf’s level at this point. Metcalf has three 1,000+ yard seasons under his belt. Coleman has a decent rookie season and a big Week 1 game in his sophomore year.

I think this raises a point about the purpose of having Gardner shadow the other team’s top target. Of course you want him to be an eraser. But as much as that, you want to force the other team to leave its comfort zone. Even if Coleman isn’t quite on that level yet, there is clear evidence that he is becoming Josh Allen’s most trusted target. If Gardner forces Allen to look elsewhere in key spots, that’s a good thing for the Jets.

Obviously it goes without saying that Gardner covering Coleman won’t guarantee the Jets a good defensive day. Allen won the MVP last year spreading it around, and targeted 10 different receivers in Week 1. A late week appearance on the injury report by Gardner has also raised some questions about his health.

Still, I would wager Keon Coleman will see a lot of Sauce Gardner in Week 2.

TNF: Packers vs Commanders Game Thread

imagn-27038456.jpg

Thursday Night Football, Week 2. Tonight we have a clash of NFC top contenders as the Green Bay Packers host the Washington Commanders. Perhaps this will end up being an NFC Championship game preview.

The Green Bay Packers got their 2025 season off to a great start last week with a 27 – 13 dismantling of the defending NFC North champions Detroit Lions. Now quarterback Jordan Love and the Packers are at home for a second straight week, as they try to get off to a coveted 2-0 start to the 2025 season against the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders got their season off to a great start by crushing the hapless New York Giants at home. Now they travel to fabled Lambeau Field to take on the Packers. The Commanders’ outstanding second year quarterback Jayden Daniels is among the brightest young stars the NFL has to offer. An electric dual threat quarterback, Daniels is a major challenge for any NFL defense.

Barring an unlikely tie, one of these teams will end the night undefeated and one will take their first loss of the season. With two of the best young quarterbacks in the game and two talented rosters primed to make deep playoff runs, this is a great Thursday night matchup.

It’s the Packers and the Commanders tonight on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.

Jets vs Bills Game Thread

imagn-21939007.jpg

It’s week 2 of the NFL season and the New York Jets are home in East Rutherford, New Jersey to take on their division rivals, the Buffalo Bills. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT at MetLife Stadium.

The Jets opened the 2025 season with a tough 34 -32 loss at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. The Jets offense played extremely well. The Jets offensive line dominated the Steelers front seven, Breece Hall ran with explosiveness and authority, and Justin Fields played one of the best games of his NFL career as the Jets dominated the action for most of the game. Nonetheless, a porous secondary and mistakes at crucial moments led to a heartbreaking loss for the Jets to open the season. Now things get tougher as they take on Josh Allen and the perennial powerhouse Buffalo Bills.

The Bills opened the 2025 season with a miracle comeback win. After Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens dominated the Bills for 56 minutes, they were unable to close the deal. Facing a 15 point deficit with less than four minutes to play, Josh Allen led the Bills to a stunning 16 points in the final 3:56 to pull out an epic 41 – 40 come from behind victory as time expired. While it was a thrilling way for the Bills to open the season, the game did expose some Bills defensive weaknesses, as they were helpless to stop the Ravens’ run-heavy attack for most of the game. The Ravens threw just 19 passes and piled up nearly 240 yards on the ground on their way to 40 points. The Jets will hope to duplicate that kind of success with a running quarterback, a strong ground attack, and limited passing.

This game will be a formidable challenge for a Jets team that has been dominated by Josh Allen and the Bills in recent years. Jets fans can, however, take some hope in the Jets home performances against Allen and the Bills the last three years. The Jets have gone 2-1 and limited the Bills offense to 16, 17 and 23 points the last three games they have played in MetLife Stadium. Perhaps the Jets can continue some of that success today.

It’s the Jets and the Bills in game 2 of the 2025 season today. Enjoy the game everyone.

Jets Week 2 Anti-Game Balls: Justin Fields, Aaron Glenn, Micheal Clemons Lead the Way

imagn-27082482.jpg

The Jets lost in Week 2 to the Buffalo Bills so it is our sad duty to give out anti-game balls to those who did not deliver for Gang Green.

Justin Fields

One of the interesting dynamics of Justin Fields is his polarizing nature. Throughout the media and the NFL fanbase, you have people who talk about Fields like he’s Josh Allen. You also have people who talk about him like he’s Anthony Richardson. It has struck me that Fields is both wildly overrated and wildly underrated at the same time.

The first two weeks of the 2025 season do much to explain this phenomenon. At this point of his career, I think it’s fair to say that the most accurate assessment of Fields is he’s a low level starter/high level backup type quarterback. He arrives at this place in a different way than say Gardner Minshew. Minshew gives you the occasional big game or really bad game, but for the most part he gives you steady yet unremarkable play.

Fields. on the other hand, has highs that are really high and lows that are really low. One week he can look like a top ten player at the position. Another he can look like the absolute worst.

I came across an amazing fact last night looking at Fields’ career stats game by game. Even though he is in his fifth year in the NFL, Fields start Sunday was just the 46th of his career. That’s less than three seasons of games.

That isn’t the amazing fact. It’s this. In that short span, the Buffalo game was the tenth time Justin Fields posted a QBR at least 40 points lower than the QBR in his previous game.

It’s a staggering monument to inconsistency. You can’t drop 40 points in a game unless two things are true. Your previous game was really good, and the game that followed was truly dreadful.

If Fields doesn’t start finding more consistency, he will fall into the classic category of journeyman who is always good enough to find a job but never good enough to keep it.

For the Jets this season, the biggest burden isn’t getting Fields to find a high level. It’s about making the low moments not as low. Josh Allen played a poor game by his standards on Sunday, but he was still able to hit some timely passes and break a pivotal 40 yard run on an early third down.

Fields meanwhile was responsible for sinking the Jets offense. I don’t know any other way to put it. Many of the throws he missed were passes an NFL quarterback needs to hit in his sleep. If Fields connects on these, I don’t know that the Jets win, but they at least would have had a functional offensive performance.

Fields left the game with a concussion. The Jets must hope he is ready soon. Tyrod Taylor might be a respected veteran. He certainly can hit the passes Fields missed on Sunday, but it’s tough to envision him doing much to elevate the Jets offense the way Fields showed he was capable of doing in Week 1. But Fields also needs to find that Week 1 form again. At the very least, his bad can’t be this bad.

Aaron Glenn

The NFL is a humbling league. Succeeding in this league is a lot harder than you think it will be.

After decades in the league as a player, scout, and assistant coach, I’m sure Glenn was already aware of this. He is receiving this lesson anew, however, as a head coach.

Glenn spent much of the offseason and training camp exuding confidence in his and his coaching staff’s ability to improve the Jets and get rid of the team’s chronic undisciplined play in 2024.

Jets training camp in many ways resembled the classic training camp with the new coach. Player after player spoke about how everything was different, and there was a new sense of accountability in the air.

I think Tony Adams might have had the most honest comment comparing the new era of Jets under Glenn with what things were like with Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich.

“The last coaches preached discipline and we didn’t listen.”

Accountability is easy to talk about. It is far less easy to instill.

In the lead up to the Buffalo game, Glenn received a lot of praise for cutting Xavier Gipson over a costly fumble. I wasn’t entirely sure why he deserved so much praise. The move seemed a day late and a dollar short to me. Gipson never should have been on the roster in the first place, and Glenn waited until he predictably made a mistake that led to a loss to make a move.

But ultimately accountability isn’t about cutting players who make a mistake. It also isn’t about yelling at players who make mistakes in view of the camera so that fans can talk about how you aren’t letting mistakes slide.

It’s about making those mistakes less frequent. Sometimes that leads to cuttings, benchings, or other forms discipline. These are means to an end, though.

The Jets have a long way to go to become a disciplined football team. We saw bad penalties, glaring mistakes, guys in the wrong places, and all of the hallmarks of a bad football team.

Look, it wasn’t realistic for Glenn to fix everything in two weeks. But he should have been the first to realize that rather than declaring everything was going to be great.

Most Jets fans I encounter are realistic about this team. We don’t expect a winning record or a Playoff run this year. What we want is a team that maxes out its ability and forces the opponent to earn victories. We don’t want to see the Jets hand the game to the opposition. Unfortunately that’s what we have so far.

And part of being a difficult opponent means showing fearlessness. Glenn kicking a field goal down 20 points or punting on a fourth and one in the third quarter down 20 doesn’t suggest a coach who is going down swinging. That seemed to be true team-wide.

Micheal Clemons

I don’t want to be too hard on people here, but Clemons is just not my kind of player. In fact, he’s pretty much the opposite of everything I want in a player. He isn’t productive. He talks a lot but never backs it up. He’s undisciplined, and he makes dumb play after dumb play.

A relative lack of talent (by NFL standards) isn’t necessarily the type of thing that renders a player useless. One of the greatest players in Jets history might have been the least conventionally talented player every time he took the field. Wayne Chrebet was small and pretty slow. But he was also smart and reliable. He worked on his technique. He always got to the right spot. And he always caught the ball when he had a chance. Whether or not Chrebet had a ton of physical ability, you knew it was a close to automatic first down when a quarterback looked his way on third down.

Of course the Chrebet’s of the world are few and far between, but plenty of players carve out careers as useful role players by being smart and disciplined.

What’s frustrating about Clemons is I do believe he has natural ability. He just never channels it into anything other that boneheaded penalties like his roughing the passer on Josh Allen that extended an early Buffalo scoring drive that set the tone for the game.

Tony Adams

To be honest, I think Adams is just overexposed on this current Jets team. On a defense loaded with talent like the Jets had in 2023, you could probably live with him as a starter. He’s really more of a depth/situational player, though. Leave him out there for too long, and he’ll commit a drive extending penalty along with otherwise poor play.

Brandon Stephens

You could probably give a lot of Jets defenders anti-game ball recognition for this game, but Stephens earns one from me. He was one again brutal in coverage, but what really earned it was the total lack of effort he showed on James Cook’s touchdown run.

Watch #21 Brandon Stephens on this play! 🤣 pic.twitter.com/LwYvHQIV5W

MNF: Texans vs Bucs and Raiders vs Chargers Game Thread

imagn-25123924.jpg

Tonight we have a Monday Night Football doubleheader. Kicking off at 7 p.m. EDT we have the Houston Texans hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the nightcap, kicking off at 10 p.m. EDT, the Las Vegas Raiders host the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Houston Texans got off to a rough start offensively this season, falling to the Los Angeles Rams, 14 – 9 in Week 1. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on the other hand, got off on the right foot, squeaking out a last minute victory over the Atlanta Falcons on a touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to Emeka Egbuka. The Texans will be hoping to avoid an 0-2 start while getting the offense going, while the Buccaneers will be looking to stay undefeated in the early going of the 2025 NFL season.

Pete Carroll got his stint with the Raiders off to a good start as they defeated the New England Patriots 20 – 13 to open the season. The Chargers also got off on the right foot, taking down their nemesis, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, by a 27 – 21 score in Week 1. The Raiders and the Chargers will be playing for sole possession of first place in a suddenly wide open AFC West tonight, as the Chiefs have stumbled to an 0-2 start this season.

It’s the Texans and the Buccaneers in the opener, followed by the Raiders and the Chiefs in the nightcap in a Monday Night Football doubleheader tonight. In the immortal words of Ernie Banks, let’s play two! Enjoy the games everybody.

Cowboys called Jets with Micah Parsons trade offer

usa_today_24870360.jpg

Perhaps the biggest story out of NFL training camps was the breakdown in contract negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and their now former all pro edge rusher Micah Parsons. This ended with a trade to the Green Packers, who seem to be reaping the rewards of acquiring the man who is perhaps the best defensive player in the NFL.

Before that happened, Parsons was apparently offered to the New York Jets. And I say “apparently” very loosely as the source is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys himself, Jerry Jones.

Wow… so Jerry Jones did call the #Jets about trading for Micah Parsons.

Jerry wanted Quinnen Williams (who he highly covets) + what sounds like multiple 1st-rounders.

The Jets were not willing to meet the price.

(via @GaryMyersNY) pic.twitter.com/uzHyPOFveq

— Frankie V (@FrankieVitz) September 13, 2025

Now Jones wasn’t just giving Parsons away. Rather, the ask was All Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and some very valuable first round picks (perhaps extra valuable given the Jets current record and last decade of struggles). Clearly the Jets thought this price was too steep for the team to pay and I can’t say that I disagree given that the team seems to be in a rebuild. On the other hand, Parsons might just be the kind of player who renders a rebuild over with how he can take over a game.

We know what the Jets think, but what do you think? Is this a trade they should have considered?
