Golden Knights 4, Hurricanes 1

The Carolina Hurricanes will not go undefeated as they lost for the first time this season, 4-1 to the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night.

The Canes fell behind 2-0 in the opening period and could not pull even the rest of the evening.

Frederik Andersen had an excellent night but will pick up the loss for his efforts. The goalie stopped several grade A chances including one glove save which seemed like a sure goal.

The Canes were playing without the service of Jaccob Slavin and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Vegas was without Mark Stone.

Jack Eichel opened the scoring midway through the first period when his pass was deflected into the net by K’Andre Miller, who was trying to block the pass.

Shortly after that, Pavel Dorofeyev scored his 7th of the season to make it, 2-0.

Sebastian Aho would make it 2-1 four minutes and change into the second, but the Canes would not get any closer the rest of the way.

The Carolina penalty kill performed very well and kept one of the top powerplay units off the board, (0-4).

On the other hand, their powerplay was totally ineffective, (0-4). At one point, Adam Gold called them the “Keystone Cops” on “X”.

The team will take some time off and will continue on their road trip with a visit to Colorado on Thursday night.

Carolina Early Season – What We’ve Learned

imagn-27342186.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes are six games into the season and so far Caniacs have witnessed a bit of everything.

The results have been very good so far as they have a 5-1 record and find themselves currently in first place in the Metropolitan Division and tied for first in the Eastern Conference.

They also have a goal differential of +9, best in the East.

While the penalty kill is holding it’s own at 89.5%, good for 7th best in the league, the powerplay has been abysmal.

The team is connecting at 9.5%, good for 30th in the league. They have had trouble getting much of anything going, even with a two-man advantage.

What is the solution? That’s above your humble narrator’s pay grade.

Seth Jarvis leads the team in scoring with six goals and nine points. He set an NHL record the previous game by scoring four game-winning goals in his first five games of the season.

Sebastian Aho is right behind with eight points, (2G 6A). He has at least one point in each contest so far giving him a six game point streak.

Shayne Gostisbehere is next with seven points which ties him with Cale Makar for top scoring defenseman in the league.

Unfortunately, Gostisbehere is injured and has returned to Raleigh for treatment before the end of this long road trip.

There are several players tied with four points scored. One of them is rookie, Alexander Nikishin who also has a (plus/minus) of +5, very good for a rookie.

The experiment of using Logan Stankoven at center has gone fairly well. He has three points in his six games played and is +3. The verdict is still out though. But according to the eye test as well as stats and looking at the current roster, he seems to be the best bet for the team at second line center right now. His faceoff percentage is currently 47.1%

The goaltending situation has been good with both Fred Andersen and Brandon Bussi playing well. Andersen has a save percentage of .894 while Bussi is at .911.

Andersen certainly seems to play better taking every other game off. It is a mystery to me why the coaching staff does not employ this same strategy in the post-season.

Pyotr Kochetkov is injured and did not make the trip out West.

Speaking of injuries, Jaccob Slavin has not played since game two in Raleigh. There is no word about his status.

Nikolai Ehlers has played well but his efforts have not translated to success on the scoresheet. He has one assist in his six games.

Andrei Svechnikov is scoreless and his play on the ice warrants the result. What happened to Carolina’s highest goal scorer and arguably their most dynamic player in last year’s playoffs? Inquiring minds want to know.

All in all, the team’s results have been well earned. There is much more plus than minus and we will continue to enjoy watching to see what happens.

Carolina Hurricanes win wild one against Colorado Avalanche

gettyimages-2242569507.jpg

The regular season is a long one and so many times there are games that come and go without much thought.

And then there’s Thursday’s game with the Hurricanes and the Avalanche.

You basically need Bill Hader’s “Stefon” character from SNL to describe this one because it…had…everything—Throwback uniforms, a ton of penalties, old teammates reuniting, a touching ceremony, a big lead, a big comeback, overtime, a shootout, injuries, controversial goals, and in the end a 5-4 win by the Canes thanks to one shootout goal between the two teams.

The game comes with a huge asterisk for the Hurricanes as they lost three key contributors over the course of the night. K’Andre Miller was a late scratch as it would appear the injuries that bugged him in the preseason flared up, and then during the game the Canes lost both William Carrier and Eric Robinson. After the game Rod Brind’Amour didn’t give much of an update except to indicate that the two lost during the game would be out “for a while” and he wasn’t sure about Miller.

The wild night started with a ceremony for former Hurricane Brent Burns, who played in his 1500th game earlier this month. Colorado waited until the game against the Canes to celebrate the milestone, and the Canes were on the ice for the presentation.

Once the puck was dropped the game started at about 90 miles per hour. Just three minutes in, after the Avs threatened with a shot, Jesperi Kotkaniemi took a rebound from Mike Reiley, bounced the puck along the wall to a streaking Robinson who went in on goalie Scott Wedgewood and opened the scoring just three minutes in.

View Link

Just a minute later, the Avs were able to tie it at one thanks to a goal from Valeri Nichushkin. The Canes were unable to gather a loose puck in the zone and Nichushkin grabbed it, going in basically all alone and got by Andersen. The Canes would then stare down the first of eight penalty kills on the night when Charles Alexis Legault was called for a slash, however, Seth Jarvis would still manage to grab the lead back with the Canes’ first short handed goal on the season.

View Link

Ten minutes later the Canes top line all touched the puck to set up their third goal. At first it appeared that it would be Nikolaj Ehlers’ first goal with Carolina, however it would actually be a deflection by Sebastian Aho, his third on the season.

View Link

A minute later, Logan Stankoven would finish the scoring in the wild first period by hanging out with Jackson Blake off a face-off, and taking a feed that he eventually just physically pushed by Wedgewood to give the Canes a 4-1 lead going into the first intermission. That would be the end for Wedgewood as he was pulled and replaced with Trent Miner.

View Link

It was at this point, though, when things turned for Carolina and Colorado started to press their advantage. The Canes would be called for four penalties in the second period while Colorado was just whistled for one. The Avs would outshoot the Canes 16-5, but through all that their only goal was a controversial one.

View Link

Parker Kelly would get a glove on the puck and appear to redirect it into the net. Unfortunately no official on the ice saw that, and this is something that the Canes are unable to challenge. It was revealed a little later—no thanks to the communication by the officials—that Brind’Amour had challenged that the puck was hit with a high stick prior to this goal. The officials looked and determined that his stick was at the appropriate height. The Canes would kill off the subsequent Power Play and would go into the 2nd Intermission still up 4-2.

The barrage kept up in the third period, and while the shots were basically even at 12-11 for the Canes, the quality chances were easily shot by the Avs. Colorado was able to get to 4-3 thanks to the inevitable Martin Necas goal against his former team. Then after both teams had been held scoreless on the Power Play, Colorado finally converted with Nichushkin’s second of the night. The Canes would get a late Power Play to end the period but couldn’t convert. In the end, though, Freddie Andersen did what he could to keep Carolina in a game where they were down three regulars, two of them missing from the game, and with two Chicago Wolves call-ups playing minutes.

That strength continued in Overtime as the Canes failed to convert on yet another Power Play, and then Colorado would get their own chances—which would also come up empty. The game would move to the shootout, where Andersen finished his gem by stoning Nichushkin, Necas, and Artturi Lehkonen while Seth Jarvis was able to open up with a goal, but Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake were unable to seal it, requiring Freddie’s heroics.

It added up to a 44 save performance from Andersen, who very likely will earn a game off on Saturday thanks to the extra frame and short turnaround.

The game was played as part of a throwback night where the the Canes broke out the Hartford Whalers combo and Colorado wore their anniversary Quebec Nordiques uniform in celebration of thirty seasons in Denver. It was reminiscent of a matchup from the old Adams Division in the Wales Conference, and Hurricanes fans will be treated to this combo on January 3rd when the Avs come to town.

The Canes are now on to Dallas for the last game of their road trip, and we’ll see if the Canes call anyone up due to the injuries.

Game Preview: Hurricanes wrap up road trip against Stars

gettyimages-2242282468.jpg

On the last Saturday Night of the North Carolina State Fair, the Carolina Hurricanes will travel into Dallas to play the last game of the yearly road trip it causes. It’s the first of two anticipated meetings between the teams, although the second one might be a little more hyped.

The Canes come into Dallas fresh off their thrilling 5-4 shootout win of Colorado but banged up. They entered the trip without Jaccob Slavin and Pyotr Kochetkov, and in the process they’ve also lost Shane Gostisbehere, K’Andre Miller, Eric Robinson, and William Carrier. If you’re keeping track that three starting defensemen, three forwards, and one goalie. All will likely be waiting for the Canes back in Raleigh but how long they will all be out is up in the air.

It’s possible then that we may see the debut of Bradly Nadeau, who has already made a name for himself with a lacrosse goal in the AHL, and was a difficult cut at the end of the preseason. With all the injuries we’ll likely see several members of the Chicago Wolves join the Hurricanes for at least a game, and due to playing two games in a row and the extra frame it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Brandon Bussi get the start between the pipes so Andersen can get some extra rest before the Canes come back.

Fortunately for the Canes, the Sebastian Aho/Nikolaj Ehlers/Seth Jarvis line is cooking. Ehlers has still yet to pot his first goal as a Cane, however his effect on the other two has been clear as Aho currently has nine points with three goals and six assists, while Jarvis has been white-hot scoring seven goals and four assists for eleven points to lead the team. Ehlers has secured an assist in each of the last two games, and Thursday was the closest he’s gotten to scoring. It feels like a matter of time.

In the Dallas the Canes will face a slumping squad. The Stars got off to a 3-0 start, but since then are 0-3-1 with their most recent loss coming in Overtime against the LA Kings Thursday. All but one of these four games have been at home, and this game will be the front end of a back-to-back as Dallas will head up to Nashville Sunday evening.

Wyatt Johnson is the leading goal scorer and tied for the lead in points, and he’s coming off a two point night against the Kings. Jake Oettinger is just 3-2 in his five starts so far, with a sub-.900 save percentage and a 3.15 GAA. It’s still early, but as competative as the Western Conference is going to be, the Canes should expect to face a team that has some urgency to keep their early season from spiraling out of control. They are already six points out of first versus the same Avalanche team the Canes just beat.

Oh and then there’s also Mikko Rantanen and Logan Stankoven.

Saturday will be the first time the two teams have met since the blockbuster trade deadline move that sent Rantanen to the Stars and saw the Canes acquire Stankoven. Both have made their marks early with their new squads, and both have signed for the long term with their new squads. Rantanen is the other one tied with Johnson for the lead in points, while Stankoven is still adjusting to the new role as center. It’s had it’s ups and downs as expected as he was weak on the faceoff dot on Thursday, but also had the last goal the Canes scored by doing what they got him for—just willing the puck in.

There will likely be questions and discussion, but ultimately Stankoven was popular in Dallas and should be expected to be warmly greeted by Stars fans. The real anticiaption is for the return match on January 6th when it’s—unlikely—Canes fans will do the same with Rantanen.

Your Saturday Night special will once again be on FanDuel Sports Nework, and it will include the earliest start time in two weeks—8 PM. Who knows what to expect as this trip wraps up,

Hurricanes at Stars: How to watch, odds and game thread

gettyimages-2241443995.jpg

It’s one last game day on the road before the Carolina Hurricanes finally come home, and it’s yet another big one. The Canes face off tonight against the Dallas Stars—another team thought to be in contention for the Stanley Cup and showing just how serious they are by changing coaches in the offseason despite their playoff runs the last few seasons.

The thing that may be the most anticipated about tonight isn’t the return of Logan Stankoven to Dallas, and it isn’t really even how the team responds to playing against their former short-term teammate Mikko Rantanen for the first time this year. It’s going to be that thanks to several injuries, the Hurricanes have called up star prospect Bradly Nadeau. Nadeau was a difficult cut out of camp, and in pervious seasons he would have been like Seth Jarvis and Jackson Blake—the young player who played well enough to earn a regular shot. Thanks to finally having some cap room, though, the Canes just were too deep to justify keeping Nadeau as a healthy scratch into the season. The decision was made to get him real playing experience in Chicago.

He’s taken advantage of it.

Bradly Nadeau. Lacrosse goal.

Oh baby. 🥍 pic.twitter.com/eJN5Hgw0Tm

— Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) October 19, 2025

Now thanks to several injuries, Nadeau gets the callup. In fact the lineup tonight is almost going to look like a preseason game thanks to injuries to Jaccob Slavin, Pyotr Kochetkov, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ryan Miller, Eric Robinson, and Will Carrier. After morning skate, here’s how the lines look.

The #Canes put a bow on their two-week road trip tonight in Dallas, hoping to head home with a fifth win in six games.

Unfortunately, the injury bug has bitten hard, and the team now has SIX lineup regulars out.

Brandon Bussi was in the starter's crease this morning, and here's… pic.twitter.com/xpE8U6ikXi

— Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) October 25, 2025

In his availability, Rod Brind’Amour implied that all of the newest injuries were on the longer term side of things, and with the hockey season being a marathon and not a sprint, there’s absolutely no reason to take any sort of chance on it. Also after tonight, we should have some clarity on all of them as the team will finally end up back in Raleigh and everyone will be able to touch base. Bussi being in goal tonight is not a surprise at all considering the amount of work Frederik Andersen had on Thursday night in the 5-4 shootout win.

On the other side they’ll a Stars team that is struggling as of late. They are 0-3-1 in their last four and about to head on a road trip themselves so they will likely be desperate to play well in front of the home crowd. That combined with all the inexperience for the Canes could create an interesting dynamic.

Here’s how the Stars lined up after the morning skate.

Stars morning skate lines vs Carolina:

Steel – Hintz – Rantanen
Robertson – Johnston – Bourque
Erne – Seguin – Blackwell
Hryckowian – Faksa – Bastian

Lindell – Heiskanen
Harley – Lyubushkin
Bichsel – Petrovic

Oettinger
DeSmith

— Sam Nestler (@samnestler) October 25, 2025

The earliest start time for the Canes in two weeks is also on tap thanks to being back in the Central Time Zone. Most fans should actually be able to stay up for this one. If you aren’t going to be in Dallas, here’s how to catch the action:

Stars 3, Hurricanes 2

imagn-27422170.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes finished up their long road trip with a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday night in Dallas.

The loss gives Carolina a 6-2-0 record for the season.

The Canes, who have been decimated by injuries, put up a valiant fight but ended up with a loss to the highly rated Dallas squad.

Jackson Blake got things started for Carolina after making a nice move and better shot. It was his second goal of the season.

Sebastian Aho made it 2-0 on a blast with just 11 seconds left in the first. Aho now has a point in each game this season and is riding an eight game point streak.

The second period went the home team’s way when they scored a goal off a deflection by a Carolina player, then scored during a powerplay chance later in the period.

The Stars would score the eventual game-winner on another Carolina deflection during a powerplay when Taylor Hall was called for charging, which eliminated the Canes’ powerplay.

Once again, the Canes could do nothing with the man advantage. They went 0-3 for the night.

Coach Rod Brind’Amour finally seems to recognize that this could be a problem.

“We obviously have to score on the power play at some point because it’s putting too much stress on the penalty kill.

I guess that is a good enough reason to improve the powerplay, because it is hurting the penalty kill. The Hurricanes are scoring at a 6.9% clip, tied for last in the league.

Bradly Nadeau made his season debut and hit the crossbar during a powerplay chance.

Brandon Bussi was in net and made 31 saves off 34 shots.

Alexander Nikishin played over 22 minutes, good for second most on the team. Sean Walker played over 25 minutes.

The Hurricanes will take a day off as they return home and will prepare for their next game against Vegas on Tuesday night.

Game preview: Hurricanes visit their old friends in the Avalanche

gettyimages-2188453782.jpg

The State Fair road trip rolls on as the Carolina Hurricanes will pay a visit to the Colorado Avalanche for a game that is highly anticipated for a number of reasons.

From a player perspective, it will mark the first time the Hurricanes have seen Martin Necas and Jack Drury since the blockbuster Mikko Rantanen trade, as well as Brent Burns for the first time since he signed with the Avalanche in free agency.

It’s also an early-season showdown between two of the very best teams in the league. The Hurricanes are 5-1-0 after falling in Vegas on Monday night, while Colorado owns a 5-0-2 record to put them atop the Central Division.

And last but not least, the uniform matchup has caused quite a stir. Colorado is debuting its Quebec Nordique throwback jersey, and the teams were able to coordinate the Hurricanes wearing their white Hartford Whalers look for a full-on nostalgia bomb. The two teams will also wear the uniforms for the return meeting in Raleigh in January.

Colorado’s lines, per Daily Faceoff, are as follows:

Forwards

Arrturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas

Gabriel Landeskog – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin

Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Victor Olofsson

Parker Kelly – Zakhar Bardakov – Gavin Brindley

Defensemen

Devon Toews – Cale Makar

Josh Manson – Brent Burns

Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Goalies

Scott Wedgewood

Trent Miner

The Avs are without starting goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood as well as puck-moving defenseman Samuel Girard due to injuries.

Necas leads the team with 11 points and 6 assists, while MacKinnon’s 6 goals pace the club. Wedgewood has made every start in Blackwood’s absence, and he’s been phenomenal, posting a .927 save percentage and 1.84 goals against average.

Their last time out, the Avalanche fell short in overtime against the Utah Mammoth on the road.

As for Carolina, the Hurricanes will be without defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and Jaccob Slavin once again, both of whom are not currently on the road trip, which will finally come to a close against Dallas on Saturday.

Carolina is a modest underdog to pull out the win tonight.

The Carolina Hurricanes are back in action for their second and final regular season meeting against the Vegas Golden Knights at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Tuesday night.

After a 4-2-0 road trip that has left the team without several key players, the Hurricanes will hope to get some reinforcements as they look to avenge their 4-1 loss to Vegas in Nevada.

Jaccob Slavin and K’Andre Miller appear likely to remain out of action on the backend, but Shayne Gostisbehere could be able to return, which would be a boost to both the team’s top power play unit and defensive group.

Carolina Homecoming – Golden Knights 6, Hurricanes 3

imagn-27440612.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes finally returned home after a long, six game road trip but lost to the Las Vegas Golden Knights, 6-3 on Tuesday night at the Lenovo Center.

The home team, already depleted by injuries, were playing with just four defensemen for a period of time when both Shayne Gostisbehere and Joel Nystrom left the game with injuries. Nystrom was able to return after getting hit in the face with a puck earlier.

Andrei Svechnikov got the scoring started with a nice shot immediately off a clean faceoff win by Sebastian Aho.

It was Svechnikov’s first point of the season. The assist gave Aho a nine game scoring streak as he has at least one point in each Carolina game.

The goal was also a powerplay goal but it would be the only chance the Canes would get with a man advantage this game.

Vegas would tie things up soon enough and then take a 2-1 lead before the end of the period.

Jordan Martinook tied the game on a breakaway chance midway through the second.

With 2:31 gone in the third period, Logan Stankoven gave the Canes a 3-2 lead but there would be no joy in Mudville this night.

Brett Howden tied it up and then Jack Eichel took over the game.

Eichel notched two beautiful goals and Hertl scored an empty-netter to close things out.

It was a tough night for the Hurricanes on several levels including that they had only one powerplay compared to five for Vegas. Brind’Amour was not happy about that after the game.

Alexander Nikishin had a team high 27:33 of ice time. He was tied for the team high with four shots on goal, three hits, and three blocked shots.

The Hurricanes will need to get healthy again or find a way to get back to winning as they face the Islanders on Thursday night.

Game Preview: Islanders vs Hurricanes

Svechnikov.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes (6-3-0) hope to turn their recent fortunes around as they take on the New York Islanders (4-4-1) Thursday night at the Lenovo Center. Game time is back to 7 P.M.

The Canes have been snake bitten with injuries and it doesn’t seem like anyone of the injured will be returning to action anytime soon.

Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere are all on the shelf on the blueline. “Ghost” was going to be evaluated on Wednesday but there is no word from the team regarding his status.

Charles Alexis Legault was recalled from Chicago and will join six defensemen presently healthy enough to play. (Walker, Nikishin, Chatfield, Fensore, Nystrom, and Reilly)

Walt Ruff posted the lines but there are no major changes. Carrier was placed on injured reserve and of course Robinson remains out.

It's a practice day for the #Canes at Invisalign Arena.

As expected, Shayne Gostisbehere (midsection injury) is not skating.

All three goalies are on the ice.

According to the rotating schedule, Bussi should be back in net, but Brind’Amour indicated that Andersen may play. Kochetkov is close to returning but is not expected to play in this one.

Cory Lavalette confirmed that David Rittich will start in net for New York.

Lee – Pageau – Holmstrom

Maclean – Cizikis – Tsyplakov

Pelech – Pulock

Schaefer – Mayfield

Hurricanes 6, Islanders 2

4O0A6995.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the New York Islanders, 6-2 on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.

The Canes had six different goal scorers and 11 players with points. Even goalie Brandon Bussi earned an assist, his first career NHL point.

Speaking of Bussi, he played very well again and improved his record to 3-1 in the four games he has played for Carolina. He made 26 saves on 28 shots and now has a save percentage of .916 and a GAA of 2.25.

The Canes would be ill advised to put him on the waiver wire when Kochetkov is ready to return to action. More discussion about this later.

Bradly Nadeau started things off with a blast right from his wheelhouse just 2:33 into the game. It was his first career NHL goal.

Mike Reilly then scored a wrap-around off his own rebound during a penalty kill. The defenseman enjoyed his success against his former team and is happy to be given an opportunity at Carolina.

Jordan Martinook made it 3-0 when he stuffed in a rebound.

The home team cooled off a bit while the visitors got to their game and Carolina would not score again until the third period.

Just a minute and change into the third, Jackson Blake took a beautiful pass from Taylor Hall to make the score, 4-1.

Midway through the third, the Islanders made it 4-2 but Andrei Svechnikov answered that with a slick move and shot just 21 seconds later.

The move was vintage Svechnikov and hopefully a sign of much more to come.

Nikolai Ehlers then fed Logan Stankoven to close out the scoring.

Alexander Nikishin played well and was tied for a team high +3, and also led the team with four hits.

The Hurricanes only won 39% of their faceoffs and were outhit, 30-19. They did out shoot the Islanders 33-28.

Finally, Seth Jarvis left the game and was helped off the ice. Brind’Amour said after the game that “it did not look good”. He will be tested on Friday.

The team will practice on Friday before flying to Boston for an afternoon game against the Bruins on Saturday.

Game Preview: Hurricanes return home for rematch with Vegas

gettyimages-2242292255.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes finally return to their home ice after a lengthy and troublesome six-game road trip to accommodate the North Carolina State Fair.

The results were more than acceptable, as the Hurricanes swept California before taking one of three against the top teams the Western Conference has to offer, beating the Colorado Avalanche but losing to the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars.

It’s the Golden Knights on the docket in Raleigh on Tuesday night, as Carolina will look to avenge a 4-1 loss in Nevada. Sebastian Aho scored Carolina’s lone goal on assists from Seth Jarvis and Nikolaj Ehlers, but Pavel Dorofeyev’s beautiful seventh goal of the season and a multi-point effort from Ivan Barbashev proved too much.

While the team went 4-2-0 on the trip, injuries added a sour note. Forwards Eric Robinson and William Carrier are now out, and defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and K’Andre Miller also sustained ailments, joining Jaccob Slavin on the list of sidelined defenders.

Gostisbehere practiced Monday and could return Tuesday night, as could goalie Pyotr Kochetkov, whose role has been handled admirably by preseason waiver claim Brandon Bussi.

Frederik Andersen will likely have the net regardless, since he was off on Saturday night in Dallas.

The Golden Knights are playing their third game in four nights, having swung through Florida to play the Panthers and Lightning on Saturday and Sunday. Goalie Adin Hill is still out for them after his injury that occurred against Carolina.

Akira Schmid will likely have the net for Vegas tonight after he lost to Florida Saturday. New backup Carl Lindbom took the loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Star center Jack Eichel leads Vegas with 16 points, while Dorofeyev still leads the team with seven goals. Mark Stone holds the lead in assists, but he remains out with an injury.

Canes Face B’s to Start a Two-Game Road Trip

gettyimages-2203117953.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes closed out October with a decisive win over the New York Islanders, and look to keep it rolling against the Boston Bruins.

After a tough 10-day stretch in which Boston lost six games, the Bruins have won three of the last four, including three straight at home.

The top story out of Boston is Morgan Geekie. Yes, Carolina’s 2017 third-round pick, who scored his first three NHL goals on his first three shots back in March 2020.

This season, Geekie is tied for the NHL lead with nine goals. The Manitoba native has scored a goal in six straight games.

Geekie will now be paired with Marat Khusnutdinov, who is replacing the injured Elias Lindholm, another former Hurricane. This will be a major jump for the 23-year-old Russian, and he will get a huge opportunity today to prove he belongs in the top six.

Khusnutdinov scored his first goal of the season on Thursday, an overtime winner over Buffalo. The young Russian is poised to make an impact with Geekie and superstar David Pastrnak on the Boston top line.

Pastrnak leads the Bruins in scoring and is tied for fourth overall in the NHL. This surge to the top of the league charts is due to his hot play in recent games. Pasta has five multi-point performances in his last seven games.

For most of the season, Boston has alternated between Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo in net. Swayman went back-to-back during games two and three of the Bruins’ six-game skid, and Korpisalo has started and won the last two games.

After allowing two goals in the first versus the Islanders, Korpisalo did not allow another goal until the second period of the next game against the Sabres.

A starter has not been named, but let’s see if head coach Marco Sturm goes with the hot hand or returns to Swayman.

Besides, Lindholm, defenseman Jordan Harris is out of the lineup for the Bruins. The 25-year-old had surgery on Monday to repair a right ankle fracture sustained during Brad Marchand’s return to Boston on October 21.

The Bruins’ team defense has been a major weakness this season, ranking 26th in the NHL with 3.60 goals allowed per game. However, after the 7-5 loss to Anaheim on October 23, Boston has allowed just over two goals a game in the last four contests.

Morgan Geekie — Marat Khusnutdinov — David Pastrnak

Casey Mittelstadt — Pavel Zacha — Viktor Arvidsson

Tanner Jeannot — Fraser Minten — Michael Eyssimont

Johnny Beecher — Sean Kuraly — Mark Kastelic

Nikita Zadorov — Charlie McAvoy

Hampus Lindholm — Andrew Peeke

Jonathan Aspirot — Henri Jokiharju

Joonas Korpisalo

Jeremy Swayman

Scratched: Jeffrey Viel, Mason Lohrei

Injured: Elias Lindholm (lower body), Jordan Harris (surgery)

Carolina is back on track after a two-game skid. On Thursday night, the Canes scored six goals, matching their season high scored on opening night versus New Jersey.

The Hurricanes did so, once again, with a depleted lineup.

With the injury bug having its way in the Canes’ locker room, all eyes are on Seth Jarvis. Carolina’s goal leader took a puck to the inner ankle during a shot block attempt against New York and hobbled to the locker room.

After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said, “it doesn’t look great” for Jarvis.

Fortunately, Jarvis skated on Friday and will travel with the team today.

In more good news, Canes beat writer Walt Ruff reported that William Carrier and K’Andre Miller skated yesterday, although Miller will not make the road trip.

In other roster news, Pyotr Kochetkov was assigned to the Chicago Wolves for a conditioning stint, which can last up to two weeks.

Once again, expect Mike Reilly and two rookies, Joel Nystrom and Charles-Alexis Legault, to suit up on the back end.

With Brandon Bussi earning the win on Thursday, expect Frederik Andersen to get the start in the Garden.

Thursday’s win over the Islanders was not pretty, but the Canes started on time and won the game in the first period. With injuries and an impotent power play, Carolina must be ready from the opening whistle.

The best news for Canes fans this week is the arrival of Andrei Svechnikov. Svech is on a two-game goal streak, his first two tallies of the season.

It just so happens that the first three penalties of the season for Svechnikov have occurred in the last two games.

His game on Thursday against New York was his best of the season. He made the play happen for Jordan Martinook’s first period goal, he had a big and clean hit on Emil Heineman in the second, and had the perfect power forward goal off the wing in the third.

While Carrier remains out, let’s hope HCRBA keeps Svechnikov with Martinook and Jordan Staal. Those two vets seem to take the pressure off Svechnikov, allowing him to return to the basics of his game.

Jackson Blake had another great game. This was underscored by him taking a big hit in the second and opening the third with a strong stick that put one in the back of the net.

If the Canes can get all four forward lines clicking at the same time, this will be a really dangerous team.

Hurricanes projected lineup

Nikolaj Ehlers — Sebastian Aho — Seth Jarvis

Taylor Hall — Logan Stankoven — Jackson Blake

Jordan Martinook — Jordan Staal — Andrei Svechnikov

Mark Jankowski — Jesperi Kotkaniemi — Bradly Nadeau

Alexander Nikishin — Sean Walker

Jalen Chatfield — Joel Nystrom

Mike Reilly — Charles-Alexis Legault

Frederik Andersen

Brandon Bussi

Scratched: Domenick Fensore, Pyotr Kochetkov

Injured: William Carrier (lower body), Eric Robinson (upper body), Jaccob Slavin (lower body), K’Andre Miller (lower body), Shayne Gostisbehere (midsection)

Bruins outlast Canes, 2-1

gettyimages-2244488444.jpg

The Boston Bruins are in a weird place this year where people aren’t sure if they are rebuilding or if they are trying to contend for the playoffs. They have talent in goal and one of the game’s best players in David Pastrnak but beyond that they are breaking in a new coach and more than a few new players. It’s resulted in a bumpy start for the season, but that bumpy start was on the upswing as they shut down a wounded Hurricanes team on Saturday in TD Garden.

The game was 0-0 all the way into the third period. Both teams held firm through the first with great goaltending play, and the majority of the game was played at five on five as there was only one penalty was called on each side all afternoon. Boston actually outshot the Canes 11-9 in the first period, and then that flipped 9-6 in the second.

It wasn’t a boring contest, though, as the Canes missing half of their defensive starters still stood tall, and Alexander Nikishin made sure that the Bruins were awake for the earlier start.

Need some help waking up this Saturday?

Alexander Nikishin laying the BOOM might help 💥 pic.twitter.com/x89CTLcUZK

— NHL (@NHL) November 1, 2025

Despite this the Canes couldn’t really establish any rhythm offensively as the Bruins mostly clogged the zones to wait for a mistake. For most of the game, Freddie Andersen was able to backstop those mistakes but the Canes’ luck ran out in the third. First off, Casey Mittelstadt started a rush into the zone that quickly turned into a 2-on-1. He poked a pass to Charlie McAvoy who was able to get it back to Mittelstadt and Mittelstadt poked it past Andersen to get the game to 1-0.

View Link

Then as if they put some pressure on themselves to try and answer, Boston was again able to capitalize off a mistake and score past Andersen. Charlie McAvoy factored in on this play as well, as the fellow Team USAer seemed to thrive without Jaccob Slavin on the ice. Viktor Arvidsson leaked out of the zone as the whole Canes team had collpased toward Swayman, and took a feed from Mittelstadt from the McAvoy block, skated in all alone on Andersen and gave the Bruins a 2-0 cushion.

View Link

The B’s would lock down from there and it would take an extra skater on the ice to finally break through Swayman. On a delayed penalty call, the star of the game for the Canes Nikishin blasted a shot by the Bruins goalie to break the shut out with over two minutes left and give the Canes a chance to draw even.

View Link

Carolina was able to take that momentum and get some pressure at the end of the game, however Boston and Swayman held firm. The final siren sounded and the Canes dropped this game 2-1, despite outshooting the B’s 11-5 in the third and 29-22 overall.

After a rough ankle injury on Thursday, Seth Jarvis was a gametime decision Saturday. He ended up playing, meaning the Canes didn’t have to play the awkward 11-7 they would have otherwise. The Hurricnes though were still without Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere on the blue line, and the jumbled blue line showed as the game wore on. Having to use Nikishin on Pastrnak opened up opportunities for other players, and Boston was able to take advantage.

The Canes will come home for a couple of days and then head off to New York for their first meeting against the Rangers Tuesday Night before returning to Raleigh Thursday against the Wild.

Kochetkov shuts down New York, Hurricanes 3, Rangers 0

gettyimages-2245056144.jpg

Pyotr Kochetkov made his season debut a huge success as he earned a 26 save shutout while the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers, 3-0 on Tuesday night at MSG.

Kochetkov had been getting over an injury since the start of the season but he certainly looked healthy enough during this performance.

The Rangers came out hard and controlled play for the beginning of the game. At one point they were outshooting Carolina, 12-5 but “Kooch” was equal to the task.

Later in the period the Hurricanes got some traction and generated some chances of their own.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored his first goal of the season with a blast from the point on a powerplay.

In the second period, Sean Walker scored from long range to make it 2-0 and the Rangers seemed to come undone.

The home team went for a long period of time without even generating a single shot on goal. (21 plus minutes). They finished with one shot on goal in the entire third period as the Canes put on a defensive clinic.

Seth Jarvis closed things out with an empty-netter late in the game.

Sean Walker played 24:16 and Alexander Nikishin had 23:42 of ice time.

The Canes will return home and prepare for a visit from Minnesota on Thursday night.

These two teams seem to be on opposite paths as the Rangers have won three straight after a slow start where the Canes have lost three of their last four games. Both teams are tied for third in the Metropolitan with 14 points. Both teams have the worst powerplay units in the league, (Rangers 31st and Canes 32nd).

This would be his first start of the season for Carolina.

In an effort to shake things up a bit and to get a couple of players “going”, head coach Rod Brind’Amour has shaken the lines up. I would look for more “shaking” tonight if things start off badly.

  • Taylor Hall – Sebastian Aho – Andrei Svechnikov
  • Nikolaj Ehlers – Logan Stankoven – Jackson Blake
  • Jordan Martinook – Jordan Staal – Seth Jarvis
  • Jesperi Kotkaniemi – Mark Jankowski – Bradly Nadeau
  • Alexander Nikishin – Sean Walker
  • Jalen Chatfield – Joel Nystrom
  • Mike Reilly – Charles Alexis Legault
  • Kochetkov – Andersen

There is no update status of Carolina’s injured players. They were hoping that K’Andre Miller would be able to return soon, but he did not make the trip.

UPDATE: There is a report that Miller did indeed make the trip. No word on his status.

The Daily Faceoff has these lines for New York.

Artemi Panarin – J.T. Miller – Mika Zibanejad
Alexis Lafreniere – Noah Laba – Will Cuylle

Game Preview: Wild versus Hurricanes

gettyimages-2244550604.jpg

After a two-game road trip to the northeast, the Carolina Hurricanes are back at the Lenovo Center for home games versus Minnesota and Buffalo.

On Tuesday night, the Canes earned a great win over a struggling Rangers team. Nikolaj Ehlers netted his first goal as a Hurricane, and did so on the power play. Carolina dominated the second and third periods, limiting New York to just one shot in the final period.

Pyotr Kochetkov had a 26-save shutout in his season debut behind another game with a depleted Carolina defense.

gettyimages-2244559584.jpg

The Canes now focus on the Minnesota Wild. The Wild were pegged as a bubble playoff team this season, but have struggled to start the season.

After winning two of the first three games of the season, Minnesota won just one of nine games to close out October.

The Wild ended a five-game losing streak on November 1 and took down Nashville in overtime on Tuesday.

The strength of this Minnesota squad is the power play. Led by Kirill Kaprizov, the Wild have the third-best power play in the NHL, converting on 31.5 percent of their opportunities.

gettyimages-2245056057.jpg

The offense is extremely top-heavy. Kaprizov is tied for ninth in the league in scoring, tallying eight goals and 10 assists so far this season. He is ranked second in power play goals (5) and points (9). Matt Boldy, Marco Rossi, and Marcus Johansson are the other Minnesota players with double-digit points this season.

Despite this production on the man advantage, the Wild are struggling five-on-five. Over 43 percent of Minnesota’s goals this season have been on the power play. Minnesota is tied for the fewest even-strength goals scored and has the second-worst goal differential five-on-five.

At five-on-five, advanced stats suggest they should have scored about 31 goals based on their shot quality, but have only scored 19. The Wild are failing to capitalize on their chances and struggling to convert in the high-scoring areas around the net.

The line of Kaprizov, Rossi, and Johansson has seen the most time together during even strength. This trio has scored three goals, but have allowed four.

By the numbers, Minnesota is one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL. The Wild are allowing 3.64 goals per game, ranking 29th in the league. The penalty kill is worse, killing just two-thirds of power plays, ranking second to last in the NHL.

The Wild’s defensive struggles stem from a combination of poor goaltending, key injuries, and the inexperience of young players who have been forced to take on larger roles.

Minnesota’s goalies have also struggled. The Wild have a team save percentage of .880, and both Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt have goals against averages above 3.11.

gettyimages-2243708553.jpg

Jonas Brodin, expected to be Minnesota’s defensive anchor, had a slow start to the season due to offseason surgery. Veteran Zach Bogosian is currently on the injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

Two youngsters, Brock Faber and Zeeve Buium, have taken a larger role on the blue line. The 23-year-old Faber leads the team in ice time, and the rookie Buium is logging nearly 19 minutes a game.

gettyimages-2244324216.jpg

Bogosian, Mats Zuccarello, and Nico Sturm are all on the injured reserve.

For the Hurricanes, the two biggest questions of the season remain: who will dress on defense, and who will be the starting goalie?

With no morning skate today, those questions will be answered later in the day, likely right before game time.

The Hurricanes are now truly juggling three goalies. Brandon Bussi may be the next man up, as he last played one week ago versus the Islanders. Frederik Andersen had the start last Saturday against the Bruins.

Shayne Gostisbehere, Eric Robinson, William Carrier, K’Andre Miller, and Jaccob Slavin remain on the injury list.

According to Carolina’s Walt Ruff, Miller may play tonight.

gettyimages-2240192023.jpg

Tonight’s game will have a focus on special teams. The Canes’ eighth-ranked penalty kill will take on the third-best power play in the league. On the flip side, Carolina’s 31st-ranked power play will face off against the 31st-ranked penalty kill.

The Hurricanes have scored two goals in the last four games. This is certainly not where the team needs to be, but it is at least an improvement over just two power play markers in the eight games preceding that.

Tonight is an opportunity to build momentum and confidence on the man advantage. Let’s see if the Canes can grab it against a lowly Wild defense.

When Captain Jordan Staal takes the ice tonight, he will appear in his 910th Hurricanes game. Staal will pass his brother Eric for the most Canes games played since relocation in 1997.
