Grizzlies' Ja Morant makes 'fake' admission about Desmond Bane trade to Magic

The Memphis Grizzlies will look a bit different next season following the trade of Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic, which Ja Morant barely could believe. Bane, the last pick of the first round in the 2020 draft, had spent the first five seasons of his career in Memphis, playing alongside Morant as the Grizzlies' formidable young backcourt.

Grizzlies, Cam Spencer agree to $6 million contract restructure

The Memphis Grizzlies are entering a new era of their franchise after a very difficult couple of seasons since breaking out as a Western Conference contender in 2022. Fast-forward a couple of years, the Grizzlies are coming off of getting swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder and trading star guard Desmond Bane as a result. Now, Memphis is looking to pivot and build around the core of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. In order to do so, the Grizzlies will have to find quality role players to put around their two stars either from within the organization or in the draft and free agency. One of those internal players that the Grizzlies are depending on is former UConn standout Cam Spencer.

Warriors Summer League takeaways: Will Richard leads egalitarian attack vs. Grizzlies

A dozen Warriors players scored in the first half of Tuesday's game against Memphis, a fitting accomplishment for a squad that does not have a singular high-profile prospect on its roster. The Warriors shot 53% from the first half, and used a 11-2 run in the third quarter to build a 10-point lead. The Grizzlies fought back, but the Golden State went on a run of their own in the fourth to secure the 96-84 victory. Jackson Rowe led the Warriors with 14 points, and rookie Will Richard was a two-way standout with 12 points and two steals.

NBA Insiders' Ja Morant Trade Prediction Says Everything About Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies made a huge move at the beginning of the 2025 NBA offseason by sending star guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic, cutting their "big three" down to a duo of Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant. The Grizzlies, even without Bane, should still be set up for a semi-successful 2025-26 season. Acquiring Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from the Magic, signing Ty Jerome in free agency, and drafting Cedric Coward 11th overall help with their Bane-less backcourt, but they are likely still far from competing in a ruthless Western Conference.

Why Grizzlies believe Jaylen Wells can replace Desmond Bane immediately

When the Memphis Grizzlies traded Desmond Bane, a homegrown star and one of the NBA's premier shooters, to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and a haul of four unprotected first-round picks, EVP/GM Zach Kleiman signaled a profound shift in the team's trajectory. While the return provides immense future flexibility around Ja Morant, it created a glaring, immediate hole on the wing: how do you replace 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, junkyard-dog defense, and elite floor spacing? Well, the entire organization is rallying around Jaylen Wells to handle the job. The Grizzlies are not panicking after being swept out of the NBA Playoffs.

How Grizzlies Can Replace Star Desmond Bane With Promising 22-Year-Old

The Memphis Grizzlies have made some major changes to their franchise over the last couple of months. Right before the end of the regular season, the Grizzlies decided to fire the franchise's all-time winningest head coach in Taylor Jenkins. In addition, following their first-round loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, in which they suffered a record loss in Game 1, the Grizzlies decided they needed to shake up their roster. To do so, they decided to part ways with Desmond Bane, their sharpshooting guard, sending him to the Orlando Magic to help them solidify themselves as contenders in the Eastern Conference.
