(WWAY) — A former UNCW men's basketball player will get a chance to play for an NBA team in the near future. The school announced Jalen “Bo” Montgomery has signed with the Memphis Grizzlies and will participate on their Summer League team. This comes not long after Jaylen Sims became the fourth Seahawk alum ever to appear in an NBA game back in April. Montgomery spent the 2024-25 season in Wilmington following four years at Holy Cross. In his final college, he averaged nine points and four rebounds in 35 games. The 6'5″ guard is a Memphis native and will

Assessing Cedric Coward's Fit With the Memphis Grizzlies

Entering the draft last week, the Memphis Grizzlies were looking for a versatile wing who could produce on both ends of the floor. Coward's draft stock rose after an impressive performance at the NBA combine in May. Last season with the Cougars(should be noted it was only a seven-game sample size) he displayed strong shot-blocking ability, good overall defensive instincts and also shot 40% from beyond the arc. This combination has led some scouts to suggest Coward could fit the mold of a traditional "three and D" type of player in the NBA. Overall passing vision is also a strength of Coward's, and this could come in handy playing alongside guys like Ja Morant and Zach Edey.

Ja Morant Sends Farewell Message To Grizzlies Fan Favorite

The Grizzlies' turbulent end to their 2024-25 campaign was marked by injuries, a coaching change, and a Play-In Tournament spot that ultimately led to their sweep at the hands of the current NBA champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Grizzlies have always been known for their "Grit & Grind" culture, which they have established so well over the past decade. Multiple players have revitalized their careers in Memphis, including Scotty Pippen Jr. and Jay Huff, while others have carved out solid roles, such as Vince Williams and GG Jackson. The latest edition in the 2024-25 season was Yuki Kawamura, a 5'8'' guard that the Grizzlies took a flyer on, and turned out to be one of superstar Ja Morant's favorite players.

Yuki Kawamura Breaks Silence After Grizzlies Departure

Fan-favorite Yuki Kawamura's stint with the Memphis Grizzlies ended recently, as the Japanese guard picked up a spot on the Chicago Bulls' roster for the NBA Summer League. Kawamura's departure was disappointing to many, including Ja Morant, who sent a heartfelt message to his former teammate. Kawamura responded to the outpouring of love on his Instagram story on Thursday, sharing some appreciative words along with a photo of himself and a fan. In addition to being one of the few Japanese players in league history, Kawamura's popularity largely stems from the fact that at 5'8, he was the shortest player in the NBA this past season.
