Oddsmakers like Aaron’ Rodgers chance of being a New York Giant — will they be right?

Maybe the odds should actually be moving away from possibility

Oddsmakers are becoming increasingly convinced that veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers will sign with the New York Giants once he is officially released by the New York Jets.

In Vegas, there seems to be a lot of Rodgers to the Giants momentum.

— B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) March 9, 2025

Are the sportsbooks behind the curve, though, on this one?

Events could actually be conspiring to make Rodgers to the Giants less likely than it seemed a few days ago.

The trade of Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders means there is an opening in Seattle. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold is viewed as the favorite to fill that role

Former Giant Daniel Jones could stay in Minnesota as the bridge to J.J. McCarthy. As we wrote on Saturday, though, Jones has options other than staying with the Vikings. He could land with the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts and maybe the Cleveland Browns or Seahawks if they don’t sign Darnold among them.

That might mean Rodgers could follow the Brett Favre path of Green Bay Packers to New York Jets to Vikings.

Reality is that the Vikings, who went 14-3 in 2024 are a better situation for the 41-year-old Rodgers than the Giants, who went 3-14. So, too, are the Pittsburgh Steelers. They made the playoffs with a 10-7 record, but might lose both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in free agency.

It is no wonder that Jordan Ranaan of ESPN tweeted “the Aaron Rodgers thing hardly seems like a slam dunk at this point. The Giants are not the most desirable situation.,” on Sunday afternoon.

We will find out over the next few days, but right now it feels like maybe the odds should be moving away from Rodgers becoming a Giant.

New York Giants free agency primer: Quarterback, and a whole lot more

Miami Dolphins v New York Jets

Aaron Rodgers to the Giants seems to be anything but a certainty

“We’ve got to be better. We’re a three-win team.”

That was general manager Joe Schoen talking about the New York Giants at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Schoen did not add the “or else,” but he knows there is one. The “or else” is, of course that after running a team that has gone a miserable 9-25 the past two seasons another awful one could cost Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll their jobs.

Schoen’s chance to make the Giants better in 2025 begins Monday at noon ET when the free agent negotiating period officially opens. We know, of course, that many of those negotiations have been going on since the Combine — or perhaps before — but, we begin to see the results of that groundwork Monday afternoon.

The big question is quarterback

You already knew that. The Giants tried and failed to trade for Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams. They have been heavily connected to Aaron Rodgers and in the “be better or else” season that is upcoming Rodgers, despite my obvious misgivings, is the best quarterback on the market.

Rodgers, though, has options. His signing with the Giants is anything but a certainty.

As of Sunday evening, the Giants were waiting on Aaron Rodgers, per sources. He was assessing all his options with the negotiating window set to open today at noon.

Rodgers is expected to talk with the Seahawks and the Steelers are also an option.

— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) March 10, 2025

The obvious pivot if Rodgers goes elsewhere would seem to be Russell Wilson. The 37-year-old Wilson, though, might stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What happens then? Who knows.

In my view, though, what matter far more than whoever the Giants sign in free agency to play quarterback is whether or not they get it right when the ultimately select one in the 2025 NFL Draft.

What else to watch?

There is a lot.

The Giants have four starters who are unrestricted free agents — wide receiver Darius Slayton, guard Greg Van Roten, edge defender Azeez Ojulari, safety Jason Pinnock. It seems unlikely any of them will be back.

How will the Giants address the offensive line? The biggest hole is at right guard, but depth, particularly at tackle, is an issue. [5 offensive linemen to consider]

2025 NFL Draft prospect profile - Anthony Belton, OL, NC State

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 09 Notre Dame at NC State

Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Could Belton be a developmental lineman for the Giants?

The New York Giants are unlikely to invest a high draft pick along the offensive line. However, they could still use some young linemen to help fortify their front and give them options in the future.

NC State’s Anthony Belton is a big, powerful lineman but also somewhat unrefined at this point in his development. He has many of the traits that teams look for in tackles as well as guards, and they could view him as a giant lump of clay.

While Belton has almost exclusively played on the left side for the last three seasons, could he be the right tackle — or guard — of the future in New York?

Prospect: Anthony Belton (74)
Games Watched: vs. Wake Forest (2023), vs. Western Carolina (2024), vs. Tennessee (2024), vs. North Carolina (2024)

Measurables

Kent Lee Platte | RAS.football

Strengths

Best traits

  • Size
  • Play strength
  • Competitive toughness
  • Run blocking

Anthony Belton is a massive offensive tackle who plays with great power and impressive competitive toughness. Belton has a huge frame at 6-foot-6, 336 pounds and has solid length as well with 34-inch arms.

He has great thickness in his upper and lower halves, and has the play strength to match.

Belton is easily able to anchor against power rushers and is a surprisingly smooth mover within his range. He has heavy hands and has shown improved technique over the last two seasons. He’s able to disrupt rushes with a hard punch, and he has impressive grip strength to sustain his blocks and control defenders.

He’s a predictably powerful run blocker who’s able to generate movement along the line of scrimmage, dig defenders out of gaps, and sustain his blocks for as long as necessary. He’s able to execute outside zone blocks or be a pulling blocker, but he’s at his best blocking in man-gap or inside zone schemes.

Belton also plays with an impressive mean streak and great competitive toughness. Belton is constantly looking for work and is a menace blocking at the second level. He also consistently looks to finish his blocks with the defender on the ground, going so far as to jump on them to keep them from pursuing the ball carrier.

Weaknesses

Worst traits

  • Balance
  • Foot quickness

Belton’s greatest weakness is his relative lack of athleticism. He’s a smooth mover within his range, but he lacks great foot quickness as well as recovery athleticism.

He can struggle against particularly abrupt moves or quick edge rushers. He doesn’t have the foot quickness to redirect suddenly, nor can he make up ground if he’s beaten initially. He can be prone to lunging at defenders or losing his balance if he has to change directions to match surprising inside moves or well-disguised pressure.

And while Belton has improved his leverage and pad level over his time at NC State, he can still be prone to letting his knees straighten over the course of longer reps. That can lead to waist-bending or outright lunging at defenders.

Finally, he needs to continue to refine and become more consistent in his hand placement. That’s another area in which he’s made marked improvement as a regular starter, but he can still be a bit prone to letting his hands drift wide or being late with his punch.

Game Tape

(Belton is the NC State left tackle wearing number 74)

Projection

Anthony Belton is a developmental offensive lineman at the NFL level, with starting upside with some work.

He has the size and length to play tackle in the NFL and teams that feature downhill running games will find a lot to work with. Belton is a better run blocker than pass protector at this point in his development, though he’s shown impressive improvement to date.

Some teams could view Belton as a potential candidate to move inside to guard. His power and competitive toughness would play well inside, though his height could be an issue. That said, not having to move as far could help him be more consistent with his leverage and hand usage.

It will likely come down to each team’s blocking scheme and whether they believe his footwork will continue to improve with practice and coaching. Teams could also ask Belton to lose a bit of weight to help improve his overall athleticism.

Does he fit the Giants?
Potentially, as a developmental prospect

New York Giants free agency: Giants agree to terms with CB Paulson Adebo

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v New Orleans Saints

Photo by Derick E. Hingle/Getty Images

The Giants make their first move of free agency

The New York Giants have reportedly agreed to terms with cornerback Paulson Adebo, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Adebo, 25, was drafted by the New Orleans Saints out of Stanford in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Interestingly, the Saints traded up with the Giants for the right to draft Adebo.

He has good size and athleticism for the position at 6-foot-1, 192 pounds, and has played almost every snap for the Saints since being drafted. He’s also given up just two touchdowns over the last two seasons. He’s also given up a completion percentage of just 56.9 percent over that same period while making 128 tackles.

Adebo will immediately slot in as a starter across from Deonte Banks, and potentially give the Giants a very formidable secondary along with Dru Philips and Tyler Nubin.

Adebo’s health is a slight question, as he’s coming off a broken femur suffered after just seven games last year.

The deal is reportedly for three years and $30 million. Jordan Ranaan disputing the 3/$30 million estimate. He is reporting a deal around $18M annually.

What it means

Adebo will likely take over as the Giants’ CB1, bumping Deonte Banks to CB2.

Adebo for $30M over 3 is a great deal for the Giants. I thought he'd take a shorter deal to prove he was healthy and then cash back in quickly. Adebo as CB1 outside of Marshon Lattimore's shadow is the big question mark. I think he can be better with more zone asks too.

Benjamin Solak (@benjaminsolak.bsky.social) 2025-03-10T17:24:15.751Z

Pro Football Network says:

Adebo’s Impact on the Giants: Adding Paulson Adebo injects some life into a Giants secondary that was below average last season. New York ranked 31st in completion percentage allowed and 30th in passer rating allowed (103.1). Adebo’s arrival comes at the right time after Deonte Banks’ rough 2024 campaign.

Grade: B

“At 25 years old, there’s plenty of upside with Adebo, but he’s coming off an injury that sidelined him after seven games. Still, landing one of the best cornerbacks available can’t be overlooked.” - Brandon Austin

Instant analysis: Where does Paulson Adebo fit in the Giants’ secondary?

NFL: New Orleans Saints at Washington Football Team

Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The Giants added a young starting cornerback, but how does he fit?

The New York Giants didn’t wait long to make their first move in the 2025 NFL Free Agency period.

It was announced early Monday afternoon that the Giants have agreed to terms with cornerback Paulson Adebo, now formerly of the New Orleans Saints.

Now that he’s a Giant, or at least will be once the contract is able to be signed, how does Adebo fit into the Giants’ defense?

How it could look

We’ll start with alignment, and Adebo is a natural fit with Deonte Banks. While Banks was asked to travel with receivers at times over the course of the 2024 season, he started 11 of his 14 games at right cornerback. Adebo, meanwhile, has been a left cornerback since his time at Stanford.

Adding Adebo allows the Giants to have two young and athletic defenders who can play their natural positions.

The Saints played a relatively even split between Cover 1 (29.5%), Cover 2 (22.1%), and Cover 3 (24.2%) last year. The Giants matched the Saints in Cover 1 usage at 28.3%, but played almost as much Cover 3 (41%) as the Saints played Cover 2 and 3 combined.

The two teams played an almost identical amount of Cover 4, with the Saints at 14.7% of their defensive snaps and the Giants at 14.9%.

The signing of Adebo could be a bit of a tell that the Giants are looking to incorporate more Middle Of Field Open looks in their scheme in 2025.

Banks has historically been a better man coverage corner than a zone corner, though he was Top 5 in separation allowed last year, as well as Top 10 in forcing tight window throws.

Adebo’s athleticism and versatility gives defensive coordinator Shane Bowen the flexibility to play man or zone, as well as disguise his coverages. On that note, the Saints disguised their coverages at a much higher rate than the Giants, 33.1 percent of defensive snaps to 26.3 percent.

Adebo’s impact

If Banks is able to improve his play at the catch point, it will force quarterbacks to test Adebo rather than challenge tight windows against a big and freakishly athletic corner in Banks.

That’s familiar territory for Adebo, as he spent the last two years across from Marshawn Lattimore. Per Sports Info Solutions, Adebo was the most targeted corner in the NFL (before his season-ending injury). Yet he was the top corner in the NFL in terms of EPA allowed per target.

A big reason for that is his aggressiveness and ball skills. Adebo is a HIGHLY aggressive cornerback who excels at taking the ball away from opposing offenses. He has been Top 10 in interceptions since winning the starting job and having a year in 2023. Adebo was fifth in the NFL with 4 interceptions in 2023 and then finished the year eighth in interceptions with 3 in just seven games in 2024.

The Giants’ defensive line exerted a considerable amount of pressure on opposing quarterbacks last year. They finished 13th in pass rush win rate (41%), ninth in total sacks (45), and were fifth in sack rate (8.21%). Those numbers were with Dexter Lawrence II and Kayvon Thibodeaux each missing five games.

Better play at the catch point by Banks and the Giants’ defensive front applying pressure could put Adebo in position to generate turnovers at a very high rate.

What’s next?

The Giants still have work to do, but adding Adebo shores up one of their biggest weaknesses. By adding a young and athletic starter, the Giants also take “cornerback” off their list of needs to potentially be addressed in the draft. They aren’t done yet, and still need to address their defensive front depth, as well as that of their offensive line. And then, of course, is the looming quarterback question.

The Giants will need to get their offense functional if they want their defensive investments to pay off, and that starts at the quarterback position.

But this could be the first step in shoring up the roster, and dealing with the opportunity cost of potentially trading up for a long-term answer at quarterback.

New York Giants free agency: Giants sign DT Roy Robertson-Harris

Seattle Seahawks v Chicago Bears

Roy Robertson-Harris | Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images

Giants add needed depth to defensive line

The New York Giants got some help for star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence on the free agent market on Monday, reportedly signing veteran defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris to a two-year, $10 million contract.

Robertson-Harris is a nine-year veteran who has played for the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks. He split last season between Jacksonville and Seattle, appearing in 17 games with 2.0 sacks, 20 tackles and 5 quarterback hits.

Robertson-Harris was released last week by Seattle, and was thus eligible to sign before the free agency signing period officially begins on Wednesday afternoon.

Robertson-Harris joins Lawrence and veteran Rakeem Nunez-Roches on a defensive line that needed reinforcements. The Giants also have young players like Elijah Chatman, D.J. Davidson and Jordon Riley along the line.

The Giants also agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Paulson Adebo earlier on Monday.

With the quarterback carousel still spinning, there is still no telling which veteran will land with the Giants.

NFL free agency 2025: New York Giants’ QB options narrowing

NFC Wild Card Playoffs: Minnesota Vikings v Los Angeles Rams

Sam Darnold, Justin Fields off the board

The New York Giants’ options on the free agent quarterback market are drying up quickly on the first day of the NFL free agency negotiating window.

Sam Darnold, who started for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024, is reportedly signing a three-year deal worth nearly $100 million with the Seattle Seahawks. Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting a $100.5 million total with $55 million guaranteed.

That, of course, opens the possibility that a big-name veteran like Aaron Rodgers could sign with the Vikings.

Rodgers, the former Green Bay Packer and New York Jet who has been heavily linked to the Giants over the past week or so, has been said to be “getting close” to a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Los Angeles Rams veteran backup quarterback Jimmy Garappolo, considered a fallback option by some if the Giants weren’t able to land Rodgers, Russell Wilson or Kirk Cousins, is staying with the Rams on a one-year, $11 million deal.

Justin Fields, one of the veterans with Pittsburgh in 2024, is joining the New York Jets on a two-year, $40 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.

Wilson visited the Giants last year but did not sign. Wilson reportedly wanted the guarantee of a starting job, but with Daniel Jones still on the roster the Giants would not give him one. The Giants may also have competition for Wilson, should he end up being their best option.

New York Giants free agency: Giants — finally — sign a real swing tackle

Chicago Bears v Cleveland Browns

James Hudson III | Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

James Hudson agrees to 2-year deal

After being burned two seasons in a row by not having an adequate backup swing tackle on the roster, the New York Giants appear to have finally learned their lesson.

The Giants have reportedly agreed to terms with James Hudson III, who spent the first four years of his career with the Cleveland Browns.

Hudson, who will be 26 in May, is a 6-foot-5, 313-pounder who was a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2021. He has played in 49 regular season games with 17 starts.

Hudson has experience playing both sides. Per Pro Football Focus, Hudson has played 1,113 snaps at right tackle and 278 snaps at left tackle.

Per Mike Garafolo, Hudson’s contract is a two-year, $12 million deal with an additional $4 million in incentives.

Why did the Giants sign him?

The Giants have watched star left tackle Andrew Thomas miss significant time with injuries in each of the past two seasons. In both of those seasons, the primary backup plan was to move Josh Ezeudu — drafted as a guard — out to left tackle.

That plan failed miserably in both seasons, leaving the Giants scrambling for answers.

Hudson is by no means a great player. Jared Mueller of SB Nation’s Dawgs By Nature, which covers the Browns, called him “inconsistent.”

Still, he is an actual tackle with a fair amount of experience playing on both sides. That has to be a step toward building better depth. Maybe one that comes two years later than it should have, but better late than never.

New York Giants free agency: Giants agree to terms with LB Chris Board

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans

Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

The Giants add linebacker depth and special teams help

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with linebacker Chris Board, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. The Giants have agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $6 million.

Another #Ravens departure: LB Chris Board signing with NY Giants for 2 years and up to $6 million. He was special teams captain last year and contributed at ILB. #RavensFlock

Brian Wacker (@brianwacker1.bsky.social) 2025-03-11T00:28:37.820Z

Board, 29, has primarily been a special teams player over his 7 years at the NFL, though he played 168 snaps on defense for the Ravens last year.

Board is a good-sized linebacker at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, and should help reinforce the Giants’ special teams as well as defense. He’s played 2,510 special teams snaps over the last 7 seasons, as opposed to 1,008 on defense.

He originally signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State in 2018. Board spent the first four seasons of his career with the Ravens until signing with the Detroit Lions in 2022 and New England Patriots in 2023, before returning to the Ravens in 2024.

This isn’t the first milestone in Board’s career which he’s shared with the Giants. He recorded the first two sacks of his career (3.5 total) came against the Giants when he sacked Daniel Jones twice in the Ravens’ 27-13 win.

New York Giants free agency: Darius Slayton returns to New York

NFL: Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants

Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

The Giants bring back their most veteran receiver

The New York Giants are bringing back wide receiver Darius Slayton, per multiple reports.

Slayton reportedly returns on a three-year, $36 million deal, a fitting reward for a player who has consistently been the Giants’ best receiver since being drafted in 2019.

It seemed as though Slayton was destined to leave the Giants, but they’ve retained one of their most veteran players.

Slayton brings uncommon size and speed to the perimeter of the Giants’ defense. Those traits could be important part of the Giants’ offense in 2025 and beyond. The Giants have clearly wanted to throw the ball downfield over the last two years, and Slayton’s size and speed give them an explosive presence on the outside. Slayton has averaged roughly 15 yards per catch over the last three years, as well as 73 targets and roughly 700 yards per season.

He would almost certainly be the second option behind Malik Nabers for the Giants, however his presence would help create room underneath for Wan’Dale Robinson (93 catches) and Tyrone Tracy. And, of course, his speed down the field would create big plays with more aggressive quarterback play.

As with the additions of cornerback Paulson Adebo and defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris, retaining Slayton removes a potential draft need.

New York Giants free agency: Giants agree to terms with EDGE Chauncey Golston

Washington Commanders v Dallas Cowboys

The Giants add pass-rushing depth with former Cowboys defensive end

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with former Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Chauncey Golston on a three-year deal worth $19.5 million, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

Golston, 27, was a key rotational piece for the Cowboys’ defense last season, appearing in all 17 games and recording 56 tackles, 5.5 sacks, one interception, a fumble recovery, and five pass defenses. His versatility and ability to set the edge against the run make him a valuable addition to the Giants’ defensive front.

A third-round pick (No. 84 overall) by Dallas in the 2021 NFL Draft, Golston was a two-year starter at Iowa and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2020. Over four seasons with the Cowboys, he played in 64 games, notching 112 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and three forced turnovers.

Golston played out the final year of his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth $4.9 million, and hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Now, he joins a Giants defense looking to bolster its pass rush after ranking 25th in sacks last season.

With Golston in the mix, New York adds depth to a defensive line that is losing Azeez Ojulari giving the Giants another weapon to pressure opposing quarterbacks in 2025.

Other Giant observations

NFL Free Agency 2025: Grades For Every Signing, Trade | The 33rd Team

Paulson Adebo Grade: A+. The New York Giants make what might be one of the most underrated but valuable free-agent signings of Monday by bringing Paulson Adebo into the Big Apple. Adebo suffered a broken leg that ended his 2024 season but has made it clear on social media that he’s healthy and will be ready to go for training camp. Adebo has been an ultra-productive corner the past two seasons, generating seven interceptions and 28 pass breakups. He’s a great fit alongside some of New York’s young cornerbacks like Deonte Banks and Dru Phillips.

Roy Robertson-Harris Grade: B. A two-year, $15 million deal isn’t going to break the bank for the New York Giants, who land a veteran interior pass rusher in Roy Robertson-Harris. A solid depth signing for a team with some real impact pass rushers in the trenches. Robertson-Harris won’t be the premier defensive star, but all of the attention that will go to other defenders could allow him to make some plays on passing downs in New York’s defense.

Pre-Free Agency 2025 NFL Mock Draft: Giants trade up for Cam Ward, Browns zero in on Shedeur Sanders | PFF

1. New York Giants: QB Cam Ward, Miami (FL) Trade terms: Giants receive No. 1 overall pick; Titans receive No. 3 overall pick, No. 34 overall pick and 2026 third-round pick. The Giants are desperate for a franchise quarterback, so much so that owner John Mara has publicly said it’s “the No. 1 issue” for the team as general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll head into a make-or-break season. New York hopes to find that by trading up for Ward, whose 92.9 PFF overall grade in 2024 led all FBS quarterbacks.

2025 NFL Mock Draft: Jets land Shedeur Sanders, shake up first three rounds | The Athletic

3. New York Giants: Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado. If cooler heads prevail and the Giants do something reasonable like sign a bridge backup while drafting a QB later, that’d feel like a win for both New York’s present and future — no matter who’s running the show long-term. Hunter immediately would improve whichever room he touches.

34. New York Giants: Jaxson Dart, QB, Ole Miss. This feels like a much smarter use of resources for the Giants. Even if they have to jump back into the bottom of Round 1 for a QB, it’d be less of a risk than taking a shot at No. 2.

65. New York Giants: Jared Ivey, Edge, Ole Miss

New York Giants free agency grades: Day 1 gets mostly good marks

New Orleans Saints v Atlanta Falcons

Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Paulson Adebo, Darius Slayton moves are well-received

New York Giants fans seem to like what the team did on Monday’s first day of free agency. Here is how fans graded each of the moves made by GM Joe Schoen on the first day of the negotiating window.

CB Paulson Adebo — 40% of our voters gave the move an A, with 50% grading it as a B signing.

DT Roy Robertson-Harris — 50% of voters gave the signing of the veteran defensive tackle a C, with 26% giving it a B. Only a total 21% grades the move a D or F.

WR Darius Slayton — Giants fans love the fact that the veteran wide receiver is returning. Thirty-seven percent gave the move an A, and 39% a B.

LB Chris Board — The Giants added this quality special teamer and reserve linebacker. Forty-one percent of voters graded the move a C, and 40% a B.

OT James Hudson III — The Giants finally signed a real swing tackle, and our voters seems pleased. Forty-three percent gave the move a C, and 35% graded the signing a B.

Edge Chauncey Golston — The signing of Golston likely means Azeez Ojulari is moving on. Fifty-eight percent of our voters thus far have graded the move as a B, and 26% give the signing an A.

Here are some overall Day 1 grades from national outlets:

Pro Football Network

Grade: B+

Notable Signings:
CB Paulson Adebo, WR Darius Slayton, DT Roy Robertson-Harris, P Jamie Gillan (re-signed), QB Tommy DeVito (re-signed)

Notable Departures: None

The New York Giants have actively addressed the defensive side of the ball in free agency so far. The unit struggled in 2024, and they needed to get better across the board. Paulson Adebo gives them a high-upside cornerback who has the talent to lock down a starting spot in 2025. Roy Robertson-Harris should be a decent rotational piece for a run defense that was porous last season.

Bringing back Darius Slayton was somewhat unexpected — not because the Giants shouldn’t want him but because he could’ve easily wanted out of a rough offensive situation. The future at quarterback is uncertain, but Slayton decided to return. The Giants also got him back on a good deal. New York still has a lot of work to do, but they’re off to a decent start.

CBS Sports

Grade: C+

The Giants clearly need impact players across the roster, but especially in the secondary after generating the fifth-fewest takeaways (15) last season. So, credit to them for landing Paulson Adebo, who will be just 26 at the start of next season, and has 10 interceptions over his first four seasons in the league. There is some risk involved with Adebo coming off of a broken femur that limited him to seven games last year. If healthy, however, this is an intriguing playmaker. What prevents New York from jumping higher onto this grade sheet, however, is the lack of clarity at quarterback. The team re-signed Tommy DeVito but has yet to bring in a legitimate answer under center.

New York Giants free agency: Giants agree to terms with S Jevon Holland

Syndication: USA TODAY

Chris Pedota / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Giants continue to solidify their secondary

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with safety Jevon Holland, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

The Giants have signed former Dolphins S Jevon Holland, per source.

Dianna Russini (@diannarussini.bsky.social) 2025-03-11T12:04:08.396Z

Holland, 25, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins out of Oregon in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft (36th overall). He’ll be joining fellow 25-year old free agent DB Paulson Adebo in the Giants’ rebuilt secondary.

The Giants now have a young, highly-talented secondary that also boasts cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Dru Phillips, as well as safety Tyler Nubin.

Holland has good size at 6-foot, 207 pounds, as well as very good athleticism for the position.

He’s started 57 of 60 games since joining the Dolphins and has played both free and strong safety for Miami’s defense. Over that time he’s racked up 301 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 10 QB hits, 5.0 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 5 interceptions, and 25 passes defensed.

The deal for the former second-round pick is reportedly a three-year deal worth $45.3 million, with $30.3 million in guaranteed money.

2025 NFL Draft prospect profile - Ashton Gillotte, EDGE, Louisville

NCAA Football: Duke at Louisville

Jamie Rhodes-Imagn Images

Could Gillotte round out the Giants’ edge rotation?

The New York Giants made moves in free agency to add to the depth of their defensive front. But are they done?

The 2025 NFL Draft has a great selection of defensive linemen and edge defenders, and the Giants could dip into that depth of talent to bolster their defense.

Louisville’s Ashton Gillotte is flying under the radar, but he offers an intriguing profile and has been productive in his time there. He lacks some of the traits that get scouts excited, but Gillotte has the burst and competitive toughness that appeals to coaches.

Could the Giants find themselves in a place where Gillotte is the best value on the board?

Prospect: Ashton Gillotte (9)
Games Watched: vs. Notre Dame (2024), vs. Miami (2024), vs. Clemson (2024)

Measurables

Kent Lee Platte | RAS.football

Strengths

Best traits

  • Competitive toughness
  • Power
  • Burst
  • Hand usage

Gillotte is a compact, powerful, and highly competitive edge defender with surprising versatility.

Gillotte is built like a fullback at 6-foot 2 ⅝ inches, 264 pounds, and that’s reflected in his game. He has a stocky build with obvious power in his lower body, which he puts to good use as a power rusher. There are multiple instances of Gillotte putting bigger blockers on skates if they aren’t prepared for his bull rush.

He has an explosive burst off the line of scrimmage as well as solid flexibility in his lower body to both generate power as well as maximize his leverage. Gillotte also has solid hand usage and while he rarely gets his hands on blockers first, he does a good job of dealing with their hands and preventing them from slowing his rush. He also understands how to rush with a plan and mixes speed moves like a long-arm, swipe, or club-rip as counters his power rushes.

Gillotte is versatile enough to play from a two or three point stance as an edge defender, and is a capable run defender on the edge. He also moved inside and played as a defensive tackle in obvious passing situations. His power and leverage play well inside, and his burst makes him a mismatch for guards.

Finally, he has fantastic competitive toughness. Gillotte has no problem delivering second or third efforts to defeat blocks, match up with much bigger offensive linemen, and is willing to pursue through the echo of the whistle.

Weaknesses

Worst traits

  • Length
  • Long speed
  • Change of direction

Gillotte has a couple weaknesses which could force him down draft boards and limit his ceiling at the NFL level.

The first, and most obvious, is his overall lack of length. He’s short for a modern edge defender, and has short arms at 31 ⅞ inches. While his technique allows him to compensate to an extent, there are multiple instances in his tape where his lack of length shows up.

His rushes can be blunted by offensive linemen with long arms and solid hand usage. Gillotte generally does a good job of using his own hands to prevent linemen from latching on, but sound technicians can find his chest plate and control him. Gillotte’ short arms mean that if his efforts to defeat blockers’ hands fail, he can struggle to disengage once an offensive lineman latches onto him.

Likewise, he doesn’t have a big tackle radius, nor can he make plays off of blockers.

Secondly, while Gillotte has a good burst off the line and a flexible lower body for his height, he isn’t a great athlete overall. He lacks the speed to consistently threaten the edge, and he doesn’t quite have good enough change of direction skills to bring down agile ball carriers.

And while he was dropped into coverage on occasion, he appeared awkward and stiff in space. That could limit his appeal to teams that use “multiple” concepts and ask their edge defenders to occasionally play off-ball linebacker.

Game Tape

(Gillotte is the Louisville edge defender wearing number 9, with long hair and black bands on his wrists.)

Projection

Gillotte projects as a rotational edge defender with positional and schematic versatility.

He’s a high-effort player who understands how to use his traits to his best advantage, but Gillotte’s ceiling may always be limited by his length and lack of elite athleticism.

Gillotte should be a reliable run defender, while his burst and positional diversity should allow teams to put him in position to be a productive pass rusher. He might not be an every-down player at the next level, but he should be a defender teams feel comfortable with on the field in relief of a starter or as a part of subpackages.

Does he fit the Giants?
Possibly, depending on their defensive scheme.

Final Word: A late Day 2 or early Day 3 value

New York Giants free agency: Giants still in the market for a starting guard

Los Angeles Rams v Arizona Cardinals

Will Hernandez | Photo by Ric Tapia/Getty Images

Where will they turn? That depends on how much they are still willing to spend

Under pressure to upgrade the talent on a roster that went 3-14 in 2024, New York Giants GM Joe Schoen has been aggressive thus far in free agency.

The Giants have signed or agreed to terms with seven players as of mid-morning on Tuesday — cornerback Paulson Adebo, safety Jevon Holland, wide receiver Darius Slayton, edge defender Chauncey Golston, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris, linebacker Chris Board and offensive tackle James Hudson III.

To this point, the Giants have spent more money in free agency than any team other than the New England Patriots.

Obviously numbers are all coming in but here is what we have so farhttps://t.co/3aoHDXKJIg pic.twitter.com/1Bo7rtGCS1

— Jason_OTC (@Jason_OTC) March 11, 2025

There are, though, two big-ticket items still on Schoen’s shopping list. Quarterback, of course, is one. The other is guard, where Schoen acknowledged at the NFL Scouting Combine that right guard is a position that is currently open.

Do the Giants have deep enough pockets and enough cap space to play at the remaining top end of the free agent guard pool?

We have yet to see contract structures for many of the deals Schoen has agreed to, but the low average value per year ($8.002M) is a good thing. We will see if Schoen used any void years to lower cap hits.

The guard market, though, is looking expensive. Will Fries, the top guard on the market, agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on a deal reported to be five years, $88 million. The Giants were reportedly in on Fries, but not at that price tag.

Top guards left include Teven Jenkins of the Chicago Bears and Mekhi Becton of the Philadelphia Eagles. Will the Giants play at the top of the market for a starting guard? Maybe not.

As far as the Giants signing a right guard, at this point they think the prices are too high for what is out there.
We will see what develops.

— Paul Schwartz (@NYPost_Schwartz) March 11, 2025

Here is a look at available free agent guards, with projected market values. Old friend Will Hernandez is on the list at a reasonable two-year, $8.5 million projected value. That interest you? Any of the other “budget” options interest you?

It will be interesting to see where Schoen turns to fill this spot.
