What they’re saying as the Russell Wilson-Aaron Rodgers, Giants-Steelers quarterback drama unfolds

With Wilson scheduled to visit the Giants on Friday, is the quarterback soap opera about to come to an end?

Everybody, it seems, has an opinion when it comes to the quarterback drama that is unfolding between the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, maybe the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings, too, as we wait to see where Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson will play football in 2025.

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell knows which quarterback is a better player. He also knows that if you sign Rodgers, he needs to know from the jump who is in charge and what is expected.

“I can tell you from a tape perspective, we ARE sure that he's better than Russell Wilson. I don't think that's a question.”@GregCosell when asked to compare Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson: https://t.co/otI2530MxT pic.twitter.com/OIzlLoYzdz

Wilson is visiting with the Browns on Thursday and is expected to fly to New Jersey Thursday night to meet with the Giants on Friday. Former GM Mike Tannenbaum says the Browns should tell Wilson New York would be “the professional grave,” and should not let him leave without signing a contract.

NFL analyst Ryan Clark isn’t sure anyone should actually want to sign up to work with Rodgers.

Ryan Clark on Aaron Rodgers potentially joining the Steelers: "Mike Tomlin can work with anybody... but let's say you put Scar on the team. You know, Scar from the Mufasa movie and The Lion King... Former teammate Kurt Benkert has a different take on Rodgers.

Lot of Aaron Rodgers hate on the TL today...

Fantasy Football ‘25: Free agency takeaways

Fantasy observations from the first four days of player moves

Welcome back, readers. A lot has happened since I wrote my most recent fantasy columns (2025 first round rankings and the top tier at each position). Dozens of players have changed teams via free agency or trade, and dozens more have signed extensions with their current team. Tee Higgins got tagged again by the Bengals. If you didn’t silence your notifications, you probably have a headache from your phone blowing up with all the ESPN fantasy chimes. As an attorney, I don’t know what to make of the term “legal tampering”. Anything with “tampering” in it sounds pretty shady to me. But whatever, the NFL seems to have this all figured out, and once again, the teams tampered plenty.

So yeah, a lot of players have changed jerseys in the last week or so, but how much of a difference will it actually make? For fantasy, maybe not so much this time around. That’s my first takeaway to share: This was an underwhelming free agent class, and the overall fantasy impact for the 2025 season is likely to be muted.

Last off-season was a different story, or at least it turned out to be. Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry found new homes and ran for more than 3,900 combined yards (and 29 combined rushing TDs), and finished as the top two scorers at the running back position. Sam Darnold went from being a backup in San Francisco to the starter in Minnesota and finished 5th in the NFL in both passing yards (4,319) and TD passes (35). Josh Jacobs and Joe Mixon both topped 1,000 yards and scored double-digit TDs on new teams. Aaron Jones, J.K. Dobbins, and Tony Pollard were also quality starters in new locations. It was an unusually good year for players who moved, and especially the running backs. I don’t see that kind of impact happening this season, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see a few notable successes. As fantasy players, we want to cash in on those if we can.

I was going to do a “free agency winners and losers” column, but since many others are doing that, I think it would put me squarely in the losers column. So instead, I’m just going to give you some quick-hit reactions to what has gone down so far, purely from a fantasy perspective. And remember, more dominoes will still fall with additional cuts, signings and trades, plus the draft in late April. A great example: Who will be the starting quarterback for the Steelers and Giants? Asking for D.K. Metcalf, Malik Nabers, George Pickens, and those who roster them in dynasty and keeper leagues.

Don’t expect any of this year’s free agent signings to fly this high

Takeaways:

1. Seattle has torn it up, for better or worse. The ‘Hawks have done a complete reset, and it’s not just that the team replaced long-time, Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll a year ago. The team moved on from franchise QB Russell Wilson a few seasons ago and now his successor (Geno Smith) has also left town. D.K. Metcalf is only 27 but was traded to the Steelers, Tyler Lockett won’t be coming back, and Sam Darnold was signed as the new quarterback. The biggest beneficiary of all this turnover is Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had a mini-breakout in 2024 and finished as the WR18 on a fantasy points per game basis. He’s now the clear #1 pass-catching option in Seattle and should build on what he did in 2024.

Sam Darnold figures to take a step back after flourishing in a very QB-friendly situation in Minnesota, but he showed that he can get the ball to his top target. Seattle will surely keep adding to its WR room (they already signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling, giving them a second three-initials guy), but JSN slots in as a solid WR2 with WR1 upside for 2025. I’m lukewarm (at best) on Darnold for 2025, with so much less weaponry and without Kevin O’Connell. I also can’t shake his final two games as a Viking.

2. Justin Fields to the Jets! Is there any way this ends up working out, long-term? Almost certainly not. It’s the same-old Jets, and they haven’t had a 5-year starter at QB since Chad Pennington. The two quarterbacks I mentioned above both failed as Jet starters in the 2010s.

Meanwhile, two teams have already decided that Fields isn’t their long-term answer at QB. But don’t let all of this stop you from considering Fields as your QB1 in fantasy. If he can hang on to the starting job, he can produce, and the money they’re giving him over two years suggests that they plan on starting him right away. He’s done it before, but not on a consistent basis. I’ve written a lot about the advantage that a dual-threat quarterback can bring. Fields is that, and in his best season (2022) he finished as the QB5. If you do draft Fields as your QB1, you’ll want to also draft a solid second option.

While we’re here, I wouldn’t be too worried about Garrett Wilson. Yes, Fields is a downgrade from Aaron Rodgers as a passer. But Davante Adams is gone, Fields had his best completion percentage in 2024, Fields and Wilson played together at Ohio State, and D.J. Moore managed one Top-10 season with Fields in Chicago. I like Wilson to improve on his somewhat disappointing 2024 numbers.

Can Najee be electric with the Chargers?

3. Najee Harris has legit RB-1 upside this season. OK, Harris isn’t a particularly exciting back and he doesn’t make highlight-reel plays. His career rushing average is only 3.9 yards per carry. That’s OK, because he’s something a lot of other backs aren’t: Consistent and durable. And that’s perfect for his new landing spot. Fun fact: Harris has played four seasons and hasn’t missed a game. He’s had at least 250 totes and 1,000 rushing yards in every season. He’s also lost just four fumbles in his pro career. You know Jim Harbaugh wants to run the ball, and you know the O-line is built to grind and open holes. People forget that Harris caught 74 balls as a rookie. That total led all running backs that season. Second on the list was Austin Ekeler, with 70, and he caught his passes from…wait for it…Justin Herbert. You see where I’m going with this.

4. The Rams are now the Adams Family. In a matter of days the Rams went from “we are exploring a trade for Matt Stafford” to not only keeping Stafford, but adding Davante Adams to the mix, for big money. Adams showed last season that he still has it after age 30 (Cooper Kupp, unfortunately, did no such thing), and while neither he nor Puka Nacua is a burner, defenses are going to have their hands full with Adams and Nacua, who both catch everything thrown their way, are fearless and tough, and run excellent routes. Throw in Tutu Atwell’s speed and the other ancillary pieces and Sean McVay’s passing offense looks poised to be among the most productive in the league for fantasy. Adams could be a bargain as a wide receiver going outside the Top-15 at his position.

Geno Smith: What goes to Vegas..

5. The Raiders are righting the ship. I’m not overly excited about Geno Smith for fantasy in Vegas, but it’s a clear upgrade to what they had, and should help Brock Bowers, Jakobi Meyers, and the rest of their skill position players. Pete Carroll and a good coaching staff under him should fix the culture pretty quickly. As for Geno, he profiles as a decent value as a QB2 for Superflex leagues.

6. The Daniel Jones signing in Indianapolis is interesting. The deal is for one year and is worth up to $17.7 million. It sounds like it’s going to be an open quarterback competition between Jones and third-year man Anthony Richardson. It’s clear that the Colts have realized that AR – despite his incredible athleticism and upside – might not be the answer. I can almost guarantee that both will start games in 2025. They’re both capable of very good games, and very bad ones too. I won’t make any big fantasy judgments now, but want to keep an eye on this situation as both QBs have the rushing upside to be fantasy-relevant (and the downside to make you extremely frustrated if you’re counting on one or both of them). None of this is great for the Indianapolis receivers – a pretty good group that will continue to suffer from inconsistent quarterback play.

7. D’Andre Hopkins to Baltimore. I don’t see much fantasy relevance here, nor do I see this putting the Ravens over the top. Hopkins is clearly slowing down and he’s on his fourth team in four seasons. Baltimore has so many other viable options at RB, WR, and TE. I doubt he’ll be anything close to a full-time player and he feels like a late-round dart throw or waiver wire guy. Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith, Odell Beckham, and now D-Hop. That’s so Raven.

That’s it for today. I’m off to do some legal tampering. Keep it here for more offseason fantasy coverage.

2025 NFL Draft prospect profile - Barrett Carter, LB, Clemson

Clemson v Texas - Playoff First Round

Can Carter help take the Giants’ defense to the next level?

The 2025 NFL Draft is a deep and talented one on the defensive side of the ball. There’s a tremendous number of defensive linemen and edge defenders that will be drafted in the Top-100.

There hasn’t been much conversation about the linebackers in the draft, but teams could be viewing linebackers increasingly important pieces. Defenses have been forced to play more two-high coverage shells to account for explosive passing games, but that’s opened the door for a resurgence in running the ball. Teams need linebackers who can diagnose the run, come downhill to fill gaps, and also cover the hook/curl area and short-to-intermediate zones.

Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter might not have ideal size, but he’s been a very consistent and three-down player for the Tigers.

The New York Giants have gotten some very good linebacker play over the last two years, and Micah McFadden had a breakout season in 2024. However, McFadden is entering the final year of his rookie contract this year, so could Carter be an eventual replacement?

Prospect: Barrett Carter (0)

Measurables

Kent Lee Platte | RAS.football

Strengths

Best traits

  • Instincts
  • Processing
  • Short area quickness
  • Competitive toughness

Barrett Carter is a smart, instinctive, and remarkably consistent weakside linebacker.

Carter has been a consistent presence on the Clemson defense and has been productive since becoming a starter in 2022. He’s produced at all levels of the defense and is a capable run defender, blitzer, and zone defender.

Carter is a very savvy linebacker with great instincts and a high football IQ. He’s a leader on the defense and very active in the pre-snap phase. Carter is a constant communicator and helps get his teammates lined up. He consistently takes an accurate first move at the snap, anticipating the flow of the play and positioning himself well. He also processes the offense quickly, accurately diagnosing the play and committing to his course of action.

He understands how to attack and fill gaps, as well as leverage the ball back to his teammates.

He isn’t an elite athlete, but has solid initial quickness as well as a surprising closing burst. That allows him to be effective in short zones, as well as disruptive when he meets ball carriers.

Weaknesses

Worst traits

  • Size
  • Play strength
  • Long speed

At 6-foot, 230 pounds, Carter could be viewed as “undersized” by NFL teams.

That could be particularly true with the resurgence of the running game being fostered by two-deep safety shells. Like many college offenses, NFL offenses are looking to bigger running backs to attack defenses that are forced to spread out passing game concepts. Carter will be asked to take on many runners who are almost as big as he is, and teams could be worried that he’ll struggle in that regard.

Carter also lacks the elite athleticism we often see from undersized linebackers. He isn’t a bad athlete by any means, but he has some hip tightness and lacks great long speed. So while he’s quick and relatively agile when sorting through trash around the line of scrimmage, he isn’t a rangy linebacker. Likewise, he shouldn’t be asked to play man coverage with many skill position players. He can struggle to stay with them in tight coverage, and lacks the speed to run with athletic pass catchers down the field.

Game Tape

(Carter is the Clemson linebacker wearing number 0 and a sleeve on his right arm.)

Projection

Barrett Carter projects as a rotational linebacker at the NFL level, though he could win a starting job in the right situation.

He largely played weakside linebacker in the tape viewed, and while he’s effective shooting gaps and in pursuit teams could have concerns regarding his ability to stack and shed blockers in the run game. That could lead them to viewing him as a reserve or nickel linebacker. That said, teams that use defensive linemen to control blockers while their linebackers flow to the ball could envision a bigger role for Carter.

His football IQ and communication could allow him to be a starter in the NFL, though he’ll need to prove that he can be a three-down player if he’s going to wear the green dot. Even if that doesn’t happen, he could still be viewed as the next man up if a defensive play caller goes down.

Does he fit the Giants?
Possibly, depending on their perception of depth at the position.

Final Word: A later Day 2 or Day 3 pick

Back with Giants, Darius Slayton ‘couldn’t tell you a bad thing’ about the place

New Orleans Saints v New York Giants

Free agency led Slayton back to the place where he has spent his entire NFL career

Darius Slayton’s Zoom call with media on Thursday kept getting interrupted by well-wishers who wanted to dab him up, or by whoops of joy at the sight of the veteran wide receiver back in the New York Giants facility.

Slayton, to the surprise of many, this week signed a three-year contract that could keep him with the franchise through 2027. At the end of the 2024 season, it seemed Slayton’s six-year run with the Giants had come to an end. He seemed worn down and ready to see what NFL life looked like somewhere else.

“I think that’s kind of what free agency is all about,” Slayton said. “It gives you a chance to sit back and reflect and be able to look at what other opportunities you have out there and look at other teams as well as the organization that you’re already a part of, that’s I’ve been part of for some time.

“I’m happy to still be a Giant.”

Slayton led the Giants in receiving yards in four of his first six seasons. The common belief was that after years of losing, Slayton would go elsewhere.

“I understand why people would be surprised,” Slayton said. “At the end of the day, I’ve enjoyed my six years here as a Giant.

“I enjoyed my teammates here. I enjoy working with the people in this building. So, you know, obviously we haven’t won as many games as we would have liked and all that type of thing. But I believe that we are capable of playing more games in the future. And honestly, other other than that, I really couldn’t tell you much bad about my experience with the Giants ... I really couldn’t tell you a bad thing about this place.”

Slayton has 259 career receptions and 3,897 career receiving yards. Two more productive seasons and the 2018 fifth-round pick will find himself among the franchise’s all-time leaders in those categories.

“I hadn’t thought about it, but somebody sent it to me. It almost didn’t even read right in my head. I was like, dang, I didn’t realize it was actually something that was that attainable,” Slayton said. “I think anybody wants to end their career and feel like they left an impact on wherever they played for and have a positive memory of them wherever they played.

“So, obviously, you know, for my next three years, you know, I’m going to do my best to play my best and leave fans with a positive memory of Darius Slayton in their mind.”

Slayton acknowledged the hole the Giants have at quarterback.

“That’s pretty important for a receiver, knowing who’s going to be throwing the ball,” Slayton said. “Me, Dabs ad Joe had those discussions. I believe in the vision that they have and that they’ll get somebody in here that is going to be able to spin it and be able to lead us in the right direction.”

The two big-name possibilities are Russell Wilson, who visits the Giants on Friday, and Aaron Rodgers.

On Wilson:

“Selfishly I think he’s been noted as having a great deep ball. I love that, of course,” Slayton said. “Other than that, he’s somebody who has won in this league. He’s played well in this league for a long time. Played well last year for the Steelers, so clearly, he’s still got gas in the tank. If he’s who we bring in, or whoever we bring in, we’ll embrace him and do our best to rally around him.”

On Rodgers:

“I think Aaron Rodgers is probably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, just pure thrower of the ball, to ever play football. I have a ton of respect for him,” Slayton said. “And I know everybody loves in this league, once you get a little older, it happens to everybody, like, he doesn’t [have] it anymore or whatever. But I think Aaron Rodgers has shown he can still spin it.

“I think, like I said, we have all the tools to make a quarterback like him or any veteran or rookie successful. Obviously if we get him, I would love to play with him. It’s not often in this league you get a chance to play with a Hall of Fame, all-time quarterback. I had the pleasure of playing with one my rookie year, and I think being able to play with two in a career is definitely not a blessing that I understate.”

Pat Shurmur: Josh Allen was nearly a New York Giant in 2018

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Shedeur Sanders | Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images

Former Giants coach dishes on his tenure with the team, as well as Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, in exclusive interview

In an exclusive interview with Big Blue View arranged to discuss top NFL draft prospects Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter of Colorado, former New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur dropped a bombshell. He said that if the Giants had passed on Saquon Barkley at No. 2 in the 2018 NFL Draft and selected a quarterback it would have been reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.

“Had we not drafted Saquon, the quarterback that I felt like we should have drafted was Josh Allen,” Shurmur told Big Blue View.

“We took Saquon, who we felt was the best player in the draft with the No. 2 pick. In the next year, we were looking, now it was time, we needed to get a quarterback, right? We had a Hall of Fame player in Eli [Manning] that was near the end. And so we needed to get a guy. And in that year, it came down to Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins, right? God rest his [Haskins’] soul.

“And so we took Daniel. And then, as an organization, we picked those players for the right reasons. Saquon was Rookie of the Year, had the same number of touchdowns that year as he had this year, right? And, obviously the arrow up on him. Played Daniel the second year because of all those attributes. And you have to say after his first year, the arrow was up on him.”

Shurmur, of course, got fired by the Giants after that 2019 season. He never got a chance to finish the work he started with Jones, and Jones is now a journeyman hoping to beat out Anthony Richardson for the starting job with the Indianapolis Colts.

How much different might the Giants’ fortunes in recent years have been if Allen, clearly one of the game’s top five quarterbacks, was calling MetLife Stadium home?

Which brings us back to Sanders and Hunter

Shurmur has had a few opportunities recently to get in front of a microphone and make his pitch for Sanders and Hunter. He repeated his go-to phrase in our conversation.

“If you’re a team that needs a quarterback, take Shedeur. If you don’t need a quarterback, take Travis,” Shurmur said. “I think everybody can say I’m biased and that’s fine. But I just really believe in those two young men.”

The Giants, of course, need a quarterback. Whether or not they land one of the two big-name veterans they are flirting with in Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, a rookie quarterback needs to be on the 2025 NFL Draft menu.

Sanders, because of his Hall of Fame father and all of the attention that was focused on his college career, is seen by some as a flashy player always in the public eye.

Shurmur said neither player is what some in the general public think they are.

“I don’t pay much attention to all this. But when I work with those two players and again, I don’t know how they’re totally presented into the whatever you call it, but they’re very shy in my opinion,” Shurmur said.

“They’re basically shy, shy people. Probably get a little bit out of their comfort zone for some of the things that gets presented on social media. And they’re just great, terrific young people that are looking to get better.”

Does Sanders need time before becoming an NFL starting quarterback?

“First of all, whenever you’re drafted, then you have to develop from that point to when you play. And I think all all college players have to develop to some degree,” Shurmur said. “There’s obviously a pressure to play guys sooner when they’re picked higher. And that’s just the reality of it. But I think Shedeur will get himself ready to play.

“Let’s just say the Giants draft him and he’s ready to go Week 1, then he should play. If he needed a little bit more time than whoever else is there, or Brian [Daboll] decides that this other guy right now gives us the best chance, then so be it.”

Shurmur brushed aside the idea that Deion Sanders, Coach Prime, would be an overbearing presence for whatever franchise drafts Shedeur.

“I love Coach Prime. I love what he is as a person,” Shurmur said. “Obviously, I love who he is as my boss. I think he’s got great courage and he’s willing to say what’s on his mind. And I think that’s great.

“He’s a unique human being. You know, he’s a you know, a gold jacket player. We talk Super Bowls. He did about all you can do in baseball. He was on TV for multiple years.

“He’s an A-list celebrity. When he goes to L.A., he probably stops to see Snoop Dogg first. And he’s an accomplished head coach at the major college level. I mean, a lot of people in the world would like to just be one of those things.

“And so he’s very unique. And it’s it’s been a great experience for me to work with him and for him. And so I think it’s a good thing.

“Shedeur has great backing from somebody that knows not only the business, but knows who Shedeur is. And so I think it’s a very positive thing. And I don’t think the team should be wary of that.”

Does Shurmur think the Giants would be a good landing spot for Sanders?

“I do, actually,” Shurmur said. “I love Brian. I think I think he’s he’s trying to do all the right things.

“I’m glad he’s getting his extra year. I wish we would have had our third year because then we could have moved forward with with Saquon and Daniel and the other players we had drafted. And then Year 3, there’s a lot of examples where good things happen in the third and the fourth year. And then then you’re off to the races.

“So I’m happy that he’s getting that. And he’s an outstanding coach. Joe Schoen’s an outstanding GM and I’m rooting for them to have success. So, that’s about what I can say about that.”

Paulson Adebo wants to bring ballhawk mentality to young, talented New York Giants defense

New Orleans Saints v Atlanta Falcons

The newest Giants cornerback wasn’t shy about what he plans to bring to the Giants defense

Newest New York Giants cornerback Paulson Adebo met with the media on Thursday for the first time since officially inking his new three-year, $54 million contract. He took on the expected gambit of questions, ranging from how he’s been progressing in his rehab from a broken femur, his thoughts on the current state of the Giants defense, and what he plans to bring to his new team.

Here are a few quick highlights from his time at the podium on Thursday:

On how he sees himself fitting into the Giants’ scheme

“I feel like I can play man or zone. In New Orleans we did play a lot of man, bump-and-run coverage. But I feel comfortable playing in a zone scheme. Did that in college a lot. I really feel good either way.”

On if he would agree with the description that he is a ‘ballhawk’

“Yeah, I think for me catching interceptions, making plays on the ball is very important to be able to give the offense the ball back. That’s something I definitely pride myself on, something I really practiced as far as getting my head around, even catching jugs in practice, trying to catch as many balls as possible. I just know how impactful that can be for a team to help the team with.”

On how he is recovering from his broken femur

“I’m doing really good, been running, sprinting, changing directions, doing everything and really practicing to be able to be ready when the activities start.”

“Just putting out videos and communicating between my training staff and the different teams and stuff. But I felt really comfortable. Obviously, I feel like I’ve been in a good spot for the past couple of months really, so I wasn’t really too worried about that causing any disruptions.”

On Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke, whom he played with at Stanford

“It’s really good. Bobby was like my OG when I came in at Stanford. We’ve got a real good relationship. We hang out. We talk football. Talk about ways to better ourselves on the field. That was a good relationship for me to have coming into this organization.”

On his feelings about being the elder statesman in the cornerback room

“I think any time you can come in and bring experience, that’s great. I have some experience. So, if there’s something that I know, I’ll be very willing to be able to share that knowledge and share that wisdom and at the same time being willing to learn. Coming into a new organization, seeing how things are done and adapt accordingly.”

On how he felt as the Saints’ CB1 in 2024

“Honestly, I feel like there’s two corners on the field, obviously. We get into the CB-1 role but it’s just really winning your matchup. You know what I mean? I feel like I’ve always had that mentality to win the matchup regardless of who I’m lined up against. We didn’t travel, necessarily, all the time in New Orleans. So, a lot of times you do end up on the No. 1 guy. You just have to produce. In different schemes, maybe where it’s like there’s always one person following, probably bigger in that. But myself, I view myself as being able to go up against anybody.”

New York Giants free agency: Guard Aaron Stinnie returns to New York

The Giants continue to add to their offensive line depth

The New York Giants have signed guard Aaron Stinnie to a one-year deal, per a report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

#Giants continue to add offensive line depth, agreeing to terms with veteran guard Aaron Stinnie on a one-year deal, per source.

Stinnie, a seven-year vet, played 16 games with three starts in New York last season.

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) March 13, 2025

Stinnie, 31 and a seven-year vet, has played in 25 games since 2018 with 12 starts. Three of those starts came last year for the Giants at left guard, filling in for an injured Jon Runyan Jr. Stinnie became the Giants’ starting left guard for the final three games of the year after Runyan’s season was ended by a high ankle sprain.

He was serviceable depth at the position, surrendering 2 quarterback hits and 5 hurries, but now sacks over in his 193 snaps, per PFF.

Offensive line depth was a problem for the Giants in 2025, and the Giants have taken a number of steps in free agency to fill out their depth chart. The Giants have signed James Hudson III and Stone Forsythe as offensive tackle depth, as well as Greg Van Roten and Stinnie as guard depth.

Veteran cornerback leaves young secondary behind

Cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, who spent the last four seasons with the New York Giants, is reportedly joining the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in free agency.

Jackson signed a three-year contract with the Giants in 2021. He re-upped with New York for an additional season near the end of training camp. He played in 14 games last season with five starts.

Jackson, who turns 30 in September, played in 51 games with 41 starts for New York.

Before joining the Giants, Jackson was a first-round pick by the Tennessee Titans and spent four seasons there. Jackson has just four interceptions in 97 career regular season games.

The Giants have added two starting 25-year-old players to their secondary in free agency, cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland. Those two are the oldest players at the top of the Giants’ secondary depth chart.

Because he is going to the Eagles this is sure to cause some gnashing of teeth in the Giants fan base. Jackson and the Giants, though, always seemed destined to part ways this offseason.

Russell Wilson? Joe Flacco? Aaron Rodgers? Giants’ veteran QB search may be nearing an end

Jacksonville Jaguars v Indianapolis Colts

Giants host Flacco, await Wilson

The New York Giants search for a veteran quarterback might be winding toward a conclusion.

Russell Wilson, who will turn 37 next season, was en route to New Jersey Thursday evening and is scheduled to meet with the Giants on Friday.

A 13-year NFL veteran, Wilson started 11 regular season games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. After 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson spent two unsuccessful seasons with the Denver Broncos and then helped the Steelers go 10-7 and reach the playoffs in 2024.

The Giants, Steelers and perhaps the Minnesota Vikings have been waiting on an answer from 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers regarding where, or if, he will play in 2025.

Wilson’s visit to New Jersey could mean the Giants won’t wait for Rodgers. Wilson had interest in coming to the Giants last season, but with Daniel Jones on the roster the team would not guarantee him a starting job.

As a backup plan, the Giants reportedly hosted 40-year-old Joe Flacco on Thursday. A 17-year veteran, Flacco played in eight games with six starts for the Indianapolis Colts in 2024.

Flacco was a first-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2008.

The drawn-out process involving big names has inflated the stakes of this quarterback search. Whether it’s Rodgers, Wilson or — gulp — someone further down the list of options, the Giants still need to accomplish Mara’s stated top priority: Finding the quarterback of the future.

The Giants have the next six weeks to sort through their quarterback evaluations and chart a course of action for the draft. In the meantime, they await word from Rodgers. Unfortunately for them, they don’t have any other choice.

New York Giants: C+. The Giants clearly need impact players across the roster, but especially in the secondary after generating the fifth-fewest takeaways (15) last season. So, credit to them for landing Paulson Adebo, who will be just 26 at the start of next season, and has 10 interceptions over his first four seasons in the league. New York also scored arguably the best safety in this free agency class in Holland, who is a super versatile defensive back that will make an immediate impact. These wins don’t do enough to make up for the fact that the Giants still don’t have a quarterback, though.

The draft expert reported Thursday on The McShay Show he heard Sanders didn’t have “the most professional interview,” and the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year displayed a “laissez-faire, relaxed, chill” attitude.

McShay added that the vast majority of concerns with Sanders as a prospect stem from what he put on tape with the Buffs, rather than his combine interviews. In addition, talent evaluators broadly “like him a lot.”

New York Giants mock draft tracker: Quarterback or position player? It depends

NFL: APR 25 2024 Draft

Photo by John Smolek/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

What is going to happen in the Giants’ search for a veteran quarterback

As the New York Giants try to find a veteran quarterback to lead them in 2025, a split of opinion has developed in the mock draft community over whether the Giants will us their first pick on the 2025 NFL Draft on a quarterback.

There are 54 mock drafts in this week’s tracker. Twenty-four of those gave the Giants a quarterback. Twelve (22.2%) selected Shedeur Sanders of Colorado. Eleven (20%) chose Cam Ward for New York. One gave the Giants Ole Miss signal-caller Jaxson Dart.

The most commonly-selected player for New York was Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter. He was chosen in 19 mock drafts (34.5%). Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter was chosen in 10 mock drafts (18.2%).

How the Giants proceed at No. 3 may be determined by the outcome of their veteran quarterback search. If they land Aaron Rodgers, perhaps they use No. 3 to add a position player. If it ends up being Russell Wilson, that might go either way. If it is Joe Flacco, the Giants would likely look to grab a quarterback in Round 1.

‘Zero chance’ Cam Ward falls to New York Giants at No. 3 in NFL draft

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Giants may not get chance to select draft’s top quarterback

If the New York Giants want to select Miami quarterback Cam Ward in the 2025 NFL Draft, it appears they are going to have to convince the Tennessee Titans to trade them the No. 1 overall pick.

“Zero chance. Zero chance that Cam Ward is going to make it to the Giants at 3,” NFL insider Adam Schefter said on the ‘DiPietro & Rothenberg’ Show. “It’s not gonna happen.

“I expect Cam Ward will be the No. 1 pick in the draft, whether that’s Tennessee or Cleveland or the New York Giants making that pick.”

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay said on his podcast that he expects the Titans to stay at No. 1 and select Ward.

“I think Tennessee’s gonna take Cam Ward at No. 1,” McShay said. “I don’t know anything. No one outside of that building knows.”

McShay said that inside the Titans’ organization “I think they all know” they are selecting Ward.

2025 NFL Draft prospect profile - Wyatt Milum, OL, West Virginia

West Virginia v Texas Tech

Photo by John E. Moore III/Getty Images

Is Milum a guard or tackle in the NFL?

The 2025 offensive line class is definitely an unconventional one.

It’s relatively light on pure offensive tackles, as well as pure interior linemen. However, there are a number of players who either could play both at the NFL level or who played tackle in college who will be guards in the NFL.

Figuring which of those applies to West Virginia’s Wyatt Milum might be the most complicated part of his evaluation. On the field, Milum is a tough, dependable blocker, but does he have the traits to stay at offensive tackle in the NFL?

His play strength and toughness could certainly appeal to the New York Giants, and they might also not care whether his best position is tackle or guard. Could that put him firmly on their radar?

Prospect: Wyatt Milum (74)
Games Watched: vs. Penn State (2023), vs. Penn State (2024), vs. Pittsburgh (2024), vs. Iowa State (2024)

Measurables

Kent Lee Platte | RAS.football

Strengths

Best traits

  • Play strength
  • Competitive toughness
  • Run blocking

Wyatt Milum is a powerful and highly competitive offensive lineman. Milum has good size at 6-foot-6, 313 pounds, with solid thickness in his upper and lower halves.

While Milum isn’t a mammoth offensive lineman, he has impressive power and play strength. Milum is easily able to generate movement along the offensive line as a run blocker. He does a very good job of uncoiling when he strikes with leverage, getting defenders back on their heels. He’s able to dig defenders out of holes and sustain his blocks for as long as necessary.

That play strength also shows up as a pass protector, as he’s able to control power rushers with ease. His strength also allows him to lose slowly or offer second efforts to control speed rushers if he’s beaten initially.

Milum primarily uses a vertical set in his pass protection. He isn’t a graceful athlete, but a functional one on the edge. He doesn’t have the speed normally associated with NFL tackles, but he’s able to get into position against even elite athletes.

He offers great competitive toughness and is willing to do whatever is necessary to not lose a rep or give his quarterback as much time as possible. He’s constantly looking for work and tenacious in sustaining his blocks.

Weaknesses

Worst traits

  • Leverage
  • Lower body flexibility

Milum’s weaknesses as a blocker appear to be linked to a lack of flexibility in his lower half.

He isn’t a natural knee bender, and while he can have solid leverage to start the play, his knees can quickly straighten. He can be prone to standing up over the course of longer reps or in response to athletic rushers off the edge. In either case, he tends to bend at the hips to compensate and ultimately lunge at defenders.

There are also instances where Milum is playing on his toes, on the edges of his feet, or has his heels come off the ground as he attempts to bend his knees. That could suggest limited ankle flexibility which limits his range of motion.

That stiffness can also lead to his base narrowing and feet coming together. The combination of a narrowed base and waist bending can lead to compromising his impressive play strength as well as his balance.

And as mentioned above, Milum also relies on a shuffling vertical set in pass protection. That can make him vulnerable to speed from wide alignments or sudden inside moves.

Game Tape

(Milum is the West Virginia left tackle wearing number 74.)

Projection

Wyatt Milum projects as a developmental offensive lineman who could potentially move to guard at the NFL level.

Milum’s draft stock could vary wildly from team to team. Some teams could view Milum as a potential starting offensive tackle, while others could view him as a candidate to move inside to guard. Others still may view him as more of a utility back-up with a high floor. It will likely come down to their specific needs, blocking scheme, and their measurable thresholds.

Milum is almost the definition of a “blue collar” lineman. And while he might start his career as a depth piece, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him refuse to give up a starting job if he gets his chance.

Does he fit the Giants?
Yes

New York Giants free agency: Giants add another reserve linebacker/special teamer

Los Angeles Rams v San Francisco 49ers

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles signed away from 49ers

It is not the quarterback news New York Giants fans have been waiting for, but the Giants did make a move in free agency on Friday. The Giants agreed to terms with special teamer/reserve linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles in news first reported by Mike Garafolo.

Flannigan-Fowles, 28, spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He is a 6-foot-2, 223-pound linebacker/slot cornerback who is known more for his special teams play than his defense. Flannigan-Fowles has played 616 defensive snaps in his career, never more than 163 in a season. He has played 1,284 special teams snaps. In 73 career regular season games, he has seven starts on defense.

Flannigan-Fowles is the second reserve linebacker/special teamer added by the Giants this week. The other was Chris Board, signed as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Giants Ty Summers and Matthew Adams as backup linebackers/special teamers, but both are currently free agents.

New York Giants free agency: New York adds another veteran defensive tackle

Jacksonville Jaguars v Buffalo Bills

Jeremiah Ledbetter | Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images

Jeremiah Ledbetter is second veteran defensive tackle added to roster

The New York Giants on Friday continued a pattern of adding depth in the trenches, signing defensive tackle Jeremiah Ledbetter to a one-year deal.

Per NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the deal is for $1.775 million with incentives that could push it to more than $2 million.

Ledbetter, who will be 31 this season, was a sixth-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Statistically, the 6-foot-3, 299-pound Ledbetter had his best season in 2024. In his third season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he had career best in sacks (2.0), tackles for loss (8) and total tackles (38).

Ledbetter has played in 53 games for the Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jaguars, with five starts. He also spent part of the 2021 season on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad.

The Giants, beset by injuries on both the offensive and defensive lines, have made a number of small signings since free agency began aimed at rectifying that.

On the defensive line, Ledbetter and Roy Robertson-Harris have been added. On the offensive line, guards Greg Van Roten and Aaron Stinnie were re-signed, and tackles James Hudson III and Stone Forsythe have been added.

‘Super-juiced’ Jevon Holland ready to contribute to New York Giants

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers

Dan Powers-Imagn Images

Former Dolphin ready to bring leadership and versatility to the Giants’ secondary

The New York Giants made a big addition to their secondary by signing safety Jevón Holland, and the former Miami Dolphins standout couldn’t be more thrilled about his new home.

Holland wasted no time embracing the move to New York, making it clear that the Giants’ rich history played a role in his decision.

“I was super-juiced. I was really excited. I told them to go ahead and let’s get the deal going,” Holland said when he spoke to media via Zoom on Thursday. “Giants have a long history of successful football, and I really wanted to be a part of that, especially in New York.”

One of the added perks of signing with the Giants is the chance to play alongside Kayvon Thibodeaux, his former Oregon teammate. The two played together in 2019, and Holland is looking forward to rekindling that chemistry.

“It’s going to be fun. Every time we’re around each other it’s always laughs,” Holland said. “I’m really looking forward to running that back just like it was in 2019 in Oregon.”

Though he has already made a name for himself in the league, Holland believes his best football is still ahead of him, and he sees the Giants as the perfect place to reach new heights.

“I absolutely think there’s plenty of room left to grow. I’m nowhere near my peak,” he said. “I think the Giants have the exact environment I need and the personnel I need to be able to reach those new heights.”

Holland revealed that he checked in with Xavier McKinney, a former Giants safety, before making his decision, and McKinney only had positive things to say about the organization.

“He had nothing but positive things to say. He said I was going to love it and the place itself; it breeds football and the fan base is great.” Holland said. “He just added to the excitement and reassured me that I made the right choice.”

The Giants have built a promising young secondary, and Holland sees that as a key ingredient for future success.

“That’s a recipe for excellence. It’s a group of guys that are going to be able to build with each other, create a community amongst each other, and rely on each other when we’re out there on the field.”

Despite being just 25 years old, Holland believes he has developed the leadership skills necessary to help guide the Giants’ defense.

“Even though I am young, and usually young guys don’t have that much experience leading, I feel like I’ve been put in high-intensity pressure situations to be able to grow and flourish and have to lead,” he said. “I feel like I have those qualities to be able to lead a group of men even though I am still only 25.”

New York Giants free agency: LB Patrick Johnson returns to Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former New York Giants linebacker Patrick Johnson, per a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

The Eagles have signed former Giants LB Patrick Johnson to a one-year deal, per source.

Dianna Russini (@diannarussini.bsky.social) 2025-03-14T19:36:42.522Z

The Giants claimed Johnson off waivers from the Eagles on Sept. 17th of last season. Johnson had played for the Eagles since they drafted him out of Tulane in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Johnson played in 12 games for the Giants this past year. He was almost exclusively a special teams player, getting 263 special teams snaps (83%), compared to just 46 defensive snaps (6%). He was also primarily a special teams player for the Eagles as well.

While Johnson played a lot of snaps for the Giants on special teams, they've taken steps the third side of the ball. Most notably, they agreed to terms with line backer Chris Board early in the process. Board and Johnson have similar size at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, and Board could fill a similar role as Johnson.

Giants takeaways from free agency: NY betting big that right QB can be cure-all | The Athletic

“I think once you solve the quarterback issue, I think a lot of these other things will improve as well,” Mara said days after that meeting while explaining his decision to retain the duo.

The early stages of the Giants’ offseason have amplified their words. Forget the aggressive pursuit of Matthew Stafford, or the ongoing dance with Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. The non-quarterback moves the Giants have made in the first week of free agency illustrate what they view as the culprit for last season’s 31st-ranked offense.

2025 NFL free agency: Ranking QB moves, plus big questions | ESPN.com

Ranking team fits for Aaron Rodgers. The Giants are the third-best option because they would seemingly be the only remaining choice if Nos. 1 and 2 don’t work out. The Titans don’t seem interested, and the Browns are up to ... whatever they’re up to at quarterback. Malik Nabers is a good young receiver, and New York coach Brian Daboll has had his day in the sun as the league’s exciting young schemer, so the cupboards aren’t empty. But the ceiling is low given the poor state of the offensive depth chart.

Draft or Bust: Teams that must nail the 2025 NFL Draft after free agency | PFF

Shedeur Sanders appears to be the most likely option if the Giants go quarterback early. Sanders’ college production and grading profile are impressive, but questions remain about his ceiling due to limitations in his physical tools.

Beyond quarterback, the Giants still have key needs at running back, offensive line, and linebacker, which they could address later in the draft if they take Sanders in the first round. However, if they wait on a quarterback, they may struggle to find a starting-caliber option later in a class with limited depth. Their decision at No. 3 overall will set the tone for the franchise moving forward — and could shape the rest of the draft.

Giants LB Chauncey Golston's lone preference is to be on the field | The Record

The Giants are multiple as well, but whereas Dallas aligned 4-3 in their base, the Giants align 3-4. And with linebackers Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux penciled in as starters, what might that mean for Golston? Is there a positional preference? As it turns out, there's no. He has only a single preference.

"I prefer to be on the field," Golston said. "Whatever is going to get me out there."

Chauncey Golston set career highs in total snaps (790) and pressures (37) in 2024 but has been more productive as a rotational player. In 2022 and 2023, he earned PFF pass-rushing grades of 72.5 and 75.0, respectively, while being on the field for fewer than 200 pass-rushing snaps each year.

Paulson Adebo isn’t coming off his best season, but given what his top level has looked like and his age, this is a nice deal for the New York Giants. His best season came in 2023, when he earned an 80.5 PFF coverage grade. Through four seasons in the
