14 I don’t knows from the Eagles’ spring practices

Stock report from OTAs and mandatory minicamp (Part 3 of 3).

The Philadelphia Eagles officially wrapped up their spring offseason workout program last week. Now let’s take a look at the winners, losers, and I don’t knows that stood out from three media-attended practices (two days of voluntary OTAs and one mandatory minicamp session).

Disclaimer: These were non-contact drills (no pads) and three practices is a pretty small sample size. There’s still plenty of time for players to change their outlook — for better or worse — over the course of training camp and preseason games.

I DON’T KNOWS

LB JIHAAD CAMPBELL

Campbell, who apparently isn’t 100% recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, did not participate in the Eagles’ first two media-attended practices. The 2025 first-round pick did some position drill work as an off-ball linebacker during the team’s sole mandatory minicamp practice before sitting out of team drills.

Vic Fangio said that Campbell “won’t hit the practice field until sometime in August.” Even with a generous interpretation that he returns in full around August 1, he’ll have missed about seven practices. Last year, the Eagles held 16 training camp practices.

And so it seems like Campbell might be behind the eight ball to begin his rookie season. That much isn’t necessarily a death knell. Cooper DeJean was able to eventually get on the field and be a very important contributor the Eagles’ defense despite missing significant time in training camp last year. Perhaps Campbell takes a similar path.

But maybe it takes longer than expected for Campbell to see a lot of playing time. We’ll see.

LB NAKOBE DEAN

Fangio said Dean “won’t be back for a while.” It seems like he might begin the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list (PUP) after suffering a torn patellar tendon on January 12. If that’s the case, Dean will automatically miss the Eagles’ first four games. It’s possible he’ll be out even longer.

This is a really big year for Dean since he’s set to be a free agent after the 2025 season. And his injury recovery isn’t the only obstacle to him getting back on the field. What if Campbell is shining in his absence? A good problem for the Eagles to have, for sure, but not so ideal for Dean’s personal outlook.

DT JORDAN DAVIS

Somehow, we’re in the eleventy billionth straight offseason of “Jordan Davis is in the best shape of his life!”

No, but, seriously, for real this time!

I’m not even one of the biggest Davis skeptics. I really wanted the Eagles to draft him in 2022.

But it’s hard to ignore the red flags.

The statistical production is very low: 5.5 sacks, eight TFLs, and 10 QB hits in 55 career games played (including playoffs).

While there’s an argument to be made his impact goes beyond the box score, it’s not like he’s a total force out there. If he was, Fangio would have played him much more often. Davis finished fourth on the Eagles in defensive tackle snaps played (445) last season ... behind Jalen Carter (1068), Milton Williams (654), and Moro Ojomo (490).

Maybe the best is truly yet to come for Davis. He did play well in the playoffs. And he looked disruptive during some spring practice reps.

Maybe this will be like Dexter Lawrence not really emerging until Year 4.

Maybe. But I don’t know that I feel good about the chances.

WR JAHAN DOTSON

The good news is that Jalen Hurts showed a willingness to throw to Dotson. It’s important for them to build chemistry this offseason. Of course, Hurts often didn’t have A.J. Brown (resting) or DeVonta Smith (absent until minicamp) to throw to.

I don’t know if Dotson looked so good that I feel confident that he’ll be significantly better in 2025. It’s really not a high bar to clear since he finished 112th out of 112 wide receivers in yards per route run last season. He also doesn’t need to — and likely won’t — post big numbers since he’s behind Brown, Smith, and Dallas Goedert in the target pecking order. But it would be nice if he’s mixed in a little bit more than he was in 2024.

EDGE JOSHUA UCHE

Uche didn’t stand out in practice. But he did get some notable mentions during press conferences.

When asked about the edge rusher position, Uche was the first name mentioned by Fangio after Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt. He also brought up Uche’s name again, along with Azeez Ojulari’s, in an answer to a broader question about the team’s defensive depth.

Lane Johnson first mentioned Uche when asked if any of the Eagles’ edge rushers are standing out to him. He also talked about how Uche gave him some challenges in the past.

Zack Baun said Uche is among the down-the-depth-chart players who’ve talked to him about going from relative afterthought to a bonafide star. Uche seems to realize the opportunity to reset his market.

Some encouraging signs so far. But going to need to see on-field production before totally buying in.

S TRISTIN MCCOLLUM

Without even being asked about him, Fangio brought up McCollum as a contender for the starting safety job next to Reed Blankenship. The full exchange:

Q: What’s your view of the Drew Mukuba-Sydney Brown competition?

FANGIO: It’s a competition that is going to take a training camp and a few preseason games to sort out. And Tristin [McCollum]’s in that, too.

But McCollum saw fewer first-team safety reps than 2024 undrafted rookie free agent signing Andre’ Sam.

Speaking of ...

S ANDRE’ SAM

Fangio was asked the following question earlier this month:

Q: How much did depth have to do with the defense’s success last year, and do you think you have that same depth going into this season?

His answer:

FANGIO: It’s too early to say. I mean, I look at – and I told the players this. I look at this year, very similar to last year in that at this time last year, we had a lot of turnover in personnel from the previous year. You had Baun, nobody knew what he was at this point last year. You had Nakobe, who hadn’t played any meaningful NFL football in his first two years. You had Oren Burks, who we had just signed. You had Isaiah Rodgers, who we had just signed. You had Ojomo, who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. We got Nolan, who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. We got Chauncey back. We drafted Q, Cooper, Jalyx. We had a lot of question marks at that time. This year, those names are replaced. Ringo, Adoree’, Sydney, McCollum, Ojulari, Uche, Byron Young, Gabe Hall, Booker, Jihaad, all the draft picks – Mukuba, Robinson, Smael, and then the rest of the rookies. Some of those guys in that second list have to become like those guys in the first list, and I don’t know how that’s going to turn out, but I look at us really basically the same one year to the next. The names have changed. Hopefully we’ll get the same results from these new guys that we got from a lot of the new guys last year.

Once again, no mention of Sam.

And, yet, Sam saw more first-team reps than McCollum.

CB ADOREE’ JACKSON

Jackson didn’t have a bad spring. The veteran cornerback is still in the mix for the starting cornerback spot in the Eagles’ nickel defense. But he did get outshined by Kelee Ringo. If that continues, he’ll have to settle for a backup role. Which, as evidenced by Isaiah Rodgers’ performance last year, is still important.

Jackson might be able to provide some value off the field as a veteran who adds levity to the locker room. He seems like a fun personality ... and the Eagles notably lost one of those by cutting Darius Slay.

CB MAC MCWILLIAMS

McWilliams split some second-team nickel cornerback reps with Parry Nickerson. The rookie could be a key player if Cooper DeJean gets banged up (knock on wood).

WR AINIAS SMITH

Smith was pretty invisible in the first two media-attended OTA practices before having some nice catches on the final day. All told, Danny Gray and Terrace Marshall stood out more than Smith.

WR DARIUS COOPER

Cooper stood out to me more than I expected from an undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver out of Tarleton State. I don’t know that he’s able to compete for a roster spot but he could be pushing for a practice squad role.

TE HARRISON BRYANT

None of the depth tight ends seemed to create real separation for the TE3 job.

TE KYLEN GRANSON

None of the depth tight ends seemed to create real separation for the TE3 job.

OT MYLES HINTON

Hinton left the Eagles’ final spring practice with some kind of injury. One would hope the rookie will be ready to participate in training camp. We’ll see.

Eagles 53-man roster prediction: Post-OTAs and minicamp projection

NFL: JUN 03 Philadelphia Eagles OTA

Photo by Terence Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Here’s an updated look at what the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles could look like.

We previously published a Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster prediction prior to their spring practices. Since then, we’ve learned more about the team through watching their OTAs and minicamp. And so now it’s time for an updated projection that accounts for the winners, losers, and I don’t knows of the spring offseason workout program. We’ll learn even more about the Eagles through training camp practices and preseason games but, for now, here’s a look at how the roster is shaping up.

OFFENSE

QUARTERBACK: Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Kyle McCord (3) [3]

Hurts looked sharp in the spring. McKee fared well as QB2. McCord outperformed Dorian Thompson-Robinson and appears to be in the lead for the emergency third quarterback role.

RUNNING BACK: Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, AJ Dillon (3) [6]

It remains to be seen how effective Barkley will be coming off such a huge workload. It’s hard to bet against him, though. Shipley has the potential to be more of a factor in the passing game than Kenny Gainwell was as RB2 last year. Does Dillon definitely make the roster? Only keeping two running backs seems too cute but I don’t know if the former second-round pick is a lock.

FULLBACK: Ben VanSumeren (1) [7]

The Eagles converted BVS from linebacker to fullback. He’s shown intriguing potential as a lead blocker. We’ll see if he gets any offensive touches.

WIDE RECEIVER: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Terrace Marshall, Avery Williams, Danny Gray (6) [13]

Brown, Smith, Dotson, Marshall, and Gray are the Eagles’ five best receivers right now. The latter of those two not being proven on special teams is a drawback. Williams didn’t participate in spring practices but he’s potentially going to return both kicks and punts for the Eagles. In all likelihood, at least one of Johnny Wilson and/or Ainias Smith will probably make the roster since it’s hard to see the team giving up on two picks from the 2024 NFL Draft. But I’m not sure they’ll deserve to make it based on merit alone.

TIGHT END: Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, Harrison Bryant (3) [16]

None of these players are signed beyond the 2025 season but, hey, that’s a problem for the 2026 Eagles. Goedert is good when he’s healthy. Calcaterra has pass-catching ability but must be better as a blocker. Neither Bryant nor Kylen Granson really created separation for the TE3 job during spring practices. Nick Muse is a long shot to keep an eye on after he really impressed by making flashy catches in OTAs and minicamp. The Eagles probably don’t need to keep four tight ends while also keeping a fullback.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Matt Pryor, Kenyon Green, Drew Kendall, Trevor Keegan, Myles Hinton (10) [26]

Steen took all the first-team reps at right guard during the spring. If he’s able to avoid losing his spot, the starting offensive line is set. I’m predicting the Eagles to do some roster chicanery with Kendall Lamm by temporarily cutting the vested veteran and then quickly re-signing him to allow them to stash a younger player on injured reserve during the cuts deadline. Lamm could be the top swing tackle. Pryor appears to be the top backup guard option ... or at least on the right side. It’s also possible he overtakes Steen if the 2023 third-round pick disappoints. Green doesn’t appear to be in starting contention. Kendall should really be the backup center since Brett Toth simply can’t snap the football. Keegan might be in jeopardy of being cut prior to his second season but we’re keeping him on for now. Hinton seems more ready to play now than fellow rookies Cameron Williams (whom we have the Eagles stashing on IR) and Hollin Pierce. And Jeff Stoutland seemed pretty excited by the Hinton draft pick.

DEFENSE

EDGE RUSHER: Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Azeez Ojulari, Joshua Uche, Antwaun Powell-Ryland (5) [31]

Vic Fangio talked about Smith and Hunt first when asked about the Eagles’ edge rusher outlook. The Birds are counting on these young disruptions to continue to develop. Ojulari can be a solid contributor if he can stay healthy. Uche drew praise from teammates and coaches for his spring program performance. APR probably isn’t suited to be a full-time player but he definitely has pass rush potential. Patrick Johnson might push for a roster spot just like he did last summer.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, Jordan Davis, Ty Robinson, Thomas Booker (5) [36]

Carter played a ton of snaps last year and Fangio doesn’t seem ready to pull back on the 24-year-old star. Ojomo played the third-most DT snaps of any Eagles interior defender last year and he figures to see a bigger role now with Milton Williams gone. The Eagles need more out of Davis than they’ve seen to this point. Robinson could be a solid rotational contributor as a rookie. Booker played well in a small sample size last year. Byron Young and Gabe Hall could challenge for a roster spot.

OFF-BALL LINEBACKER: Zack Baun, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Jihaad Campbell, Smael Mondon Jr. (4) [40]

It’ll be interesting to see how Baun follows up his All-Pro 2024 season. Trot Jr. is currently the favorite to start next to Baun until whichever of Campbell or Nakobe Dean (likely the former) is ready to play. Campbell must first earn Fangio’s trust, which could be a challenge if he misses a portion of training camp ... which might happen. Mondon Jr. figures to be a depth player and special teams contributor as a rookie. Dallas Gant is a prime contender to be temporarily elevated from the practice squad to the game day roster early in the season to help provide more LB depth.

CORNERBACK: Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Kelee Ringo, Adoree’ Jackson, Mac McWilliams (5) [45]

Mitchell and DeJean are currently the starting outside cornerbacks in the Eagles’ base defense, which they’ll probably only use for about seven snaps or so per game. DeJean figures to otherwise play at nickel cornerback. Ringo is currently ahead of Jackson in the battle for the outside cornerback job opposite of Mitchell in the Eagles’ nickel defense. McWilliams saw some spring snaps as the second-team slot CB and he often played on the outside in college. The Eagles could keep Eli Ricks ... but he’s entering the last year of his rookie deal. It could make sense to trade him for more depth at another position.

SAFETY: Reed Blankenship, Andrew Mukuba, Sydney Brown, Andre’ Sam, Tristin McCollum (5) [50]

Blankenship is starting. The question is: who will be next to him? We’re projecting Mukuba to beat out Brown since the rookie is already splitting first-team reps. It’s worth noting that Fangio said DeJean could seem some playing time at safety in the Eagles’ base defense, though that’s not a package we saw in the spring. Fangio mentioned McCollum is in the mix with Mukuba and Brown for a starting safety job but it was Sam who took more first-team reps in the spring. For now, we’ll say the Eagles keep five here. It’s also possible they later add a veteran (see: Justin Simmons) if the young players don’t step up.

SPECIAL TEAMS

KICKER: Jake Elliott (1) [51]

Elliott could be poised to bounce back in 2025.

PUNTER: Braden Mann (1) [52]

Mann is entering a contract season.

LONG SNAPPER: Charley Hughlett (1) [53]

Hughlett is only the Eagles’ third full-time LS since 2006.

INJURY DESIGNATIONS

PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM LIST (PUP): Nakobe Dean

Dean suffered a torn patellar tendon on January 12. Speaking in early June, Vic Fangio said the fourth-year linebacker “won’t be back for a while.” If Dean does indeed go on the reserve/PUP list, he’ll automatically miss the first four games of the season.

INJURED RESERVE (ELIGIBLE TO RETURN): Ainias Smith, Cameron Williams

The Eagles stashed Smith away on IR last year. I could see Howie Roseman doing it again to avoid giving up on a 2024 draft pick. As a developmental tackle, Williams seems like a prime phantom injury candidate to be stashed on IR.

PRACTICE SQUAD

QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, RB Lew Nichols, RB Montrell Johnson Jr., WR Darius Cooper, WR Taylor Morin, TE Kylen Granson, TE Nick Muse, OL Brett Toth, OT Hollin Pierce, EDGE Ochaun Mathis, EDGE KJ Henry, DT Byron Young, LB Dallas Gant, CB Eli Ricks, CB Parry Nickerson, S Maxen Hook.

International exemption: OT Laekin Vakalahi

Eagles schedule preview: Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys Introduce Brian Schottenheimer as New Head Coach

How ‘bout them Cowboys? They stink.

When and Where: Week 1 in Philly, Week 12 in Dallas

Last season: Went 3-5 with Dak Prescott, and 4-5 without him.

Added: Robert Jones, Kenneth Murray, George Pickens, Javonte Williams, Dante Fowler, Solomon Thomas

Lost: Eric Kendricks, Jourdan Lewis, Chauncey Golston, Zack Martin, Rico Dowdle, Cooper Rush, Brandin Cooks, Demarcus Lawrence

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Tyler Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku, Shavon Revel

Biggest question facing this team: Is this a serious franchise?

It is a great time to be a Cowboys hater. New Cowboys head Brian Schottenheimer is the Dave Campo of Jason Garretts. No other team in the league would have hired Schottenheimer to be their offensive coordinator, the Cowboys made him their head coach. Also he’s pretty cheap. Surely just a coincidence for a franchise that has allowed their previous two head coaches to walk on expired contracts in lame duck seasons rather than fire them and pay for two coaches at once.

On paper, the Cowboys have the talent to win games. In 2022. In 2024, they went 3-7 against playoff teams, with four of those losses being blowouts. Their offensive line is now a liability and Tyler Booker isn’t going to turn it around on his own; their running game remains non-existent, adding a RB who wasn’t good enough for the equally RB challenged Broncos isn’t going to turn it around; their solution to upgrade their passing game was trading for George Pickens. Brian Schottenheimer isn’t elevating this roster. He couldn’t last year.

This team is going to be bad. Potentially really bad. Dallas hasn’t been truly bad on merit since the Dave Campo era from 2000-2002 where they went 5-11 every year, their losing seasons since then have come in years when their starting QB missed several games. Dak Prescott, who has missed at least five games in three of the last five seasons, could start every game this year, play well, and the Cowboys might still go 5-12. It is a great time to be a Cowboys hater.

Making this game the first of the season was a poor choice by the league. The Thursday kickoff game has traditionally been the defending champions against either a playoff team or a supposed up and coming team. The Cowboys are neither.

The Eagles should sweep the Cowboys this season, but to steal a line, the cemetery of football is filled with favorites. The season opener should not be slept on. Divisional games are always capable of having funky results, and while the Eagles have yet to lose a season opener under Nick Sirianni, the last three were not the smoothest of games. They also haven’t swept a full strength Cowboys team since 2011, which was the first full season with Brian Schottenheimer Jason Garrett as head coach.

Eagles schedule preview: Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl LIX: Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

KC is running back the same plan of not running it back

When and Where: Week 2 in Kansas City

Last season: Lost to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Perhaps you heard.

Added: Kristian Fulton, Gardner Minshew, Jerry Tillery, Jaylon Moore

Lost: Joe Thuney, Justin Reid, Tershawn Wharton, Justin Watson

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Josh Simmons

Biggest question facing this team: Can the offensive line not be a liability in the playoffs?

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have lost two Super Bowls. In both, Mahomes was under pressure all game. After their loss to the Bucs, the Chiefs replaced every starter on their offensive line. After their loss to the Eagles, they dusted off the same playbook and again made significant changes to their OL. The Chiefs acquired two OTs this offseason, but both are big question marks.

First, they signed Jaylon Moore, who in four seasons with the 49ers started 12 games as a swing tackle. The 49ers tackle situation is also less than spectacular, though on the right side, in Kansas City he’ll compete for the left tackle starting job. Moore was one of the first free agent signings announced, and only signed to a two year deal, from a team with their own OL problems. What exactly was the rush to sign him?

In the draft, the Chiefs took Josh Simmons with the 32nd pick. Simmons tore his patellar tendon in October, ending his season. If not for the injury, he probably would have been the top OT prospect in the draft. But he did get hurt, and his injury does not have a good recovery rate, with a study released in February showing a 55% return to play rate. Simmons is by all accounts on or ahead of schedule to return from it, but being able to return to practice is only part of the recovery.

The Chiefs ended the season in desperate need of a left tackle. Their solution was to sign a career backup from a flawed OL, and draft someone with a serious injury. Perhaps it will work out, probably not by Week 2 though. Or perhaps they will be back to square one in a year, or worse if Travis Kelce retires.

Eagles schedule preview: Los Angeles Rams

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

Two Super Bowl contenders?

When and Where: Week 3 at home

Last season: Won the NFC West with a negative point differential, finished the playoffs with a positive point differential.

Added: Coleman Shelton, Davante Adams, Poona Ford, Nate Landman

Lost: Demarcus Robinson, Christian Rozeboom, Cooper Kupp, Michael Hoecht, Bobby Brown

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: The Rams once again did not make a 1st round selection, though they got the Falcons 2026 1st, which will probably be a really good pick.

Biggest question facing this team: Can the two different timelines the Rams are on meet for one glorious season?

Matthew Stafford is 37, the 2nd oldest starting QB in the league unless Joe Flacco wins the job in Cleveland. Stafford was really good last year, keeping the Rams treading water early in the season when Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp were out, then going 9-3 with a full strength roster. But he’s only got so many good years left, and at his age it is possible he doesn’t have any. Aging out can hit hard in the NFL, and if they need to the Rams can get out of his contract after this season.

Even with a geezer at QB, the Rams had one of the youngest rosters in the league last year. In back to back seasons they have had two players receive top 3 rookie of the year votes: Jared Verse won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, Puka Nacua finished 2nd for Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023; and Kobie Turner in 2023 and Braden Fiske in 2024 were 3rd for DROY. That’s a good starting point for a core.

The Rams are extremely well set up for the future. With two first round picks next year, including a potentially really good one with the Falcons pick, they’re already in play to move up for a QB in 2026 who can sit behind Stafford for a year, then take over the reins of a well coached, ascending team.

Their biggest hurdle may be health. In two of the past three seasons, the Rams have been one of the most injured teams in the league, finishing 23rd in Adjusted Games Lost in 2024, and 31st in 2022. In 2023, they were 1st, the healthiest team in the league. Stafford’s as tough as they come but he’s missed half a season twice in the last six seasons. In college and the pros, Puka Nacua has only been healthy for a full season one time, in 2023.

Saquon Barkley ran all over them in November, but the Rams were the only team that the Eagles did not dominate in the playoffs. This is a good team, and one on the up. If Stafford can keep a high level of play, the Rams could easily be a top team in the NFC.

Eagles schedule preview: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

When and Where: Week 4 in Tampa, “Tampa Bay” is an actual bay

Last season: Finished the season with the 6th best point differential in the league, then lost on a last second field goal in the playoffs.

Added: Anthony Walker, Haason Reddick

Lost: Jordan Whitehead, KJ Britt

Players added or lost in order of snaps played last season.

Top draft picks: Emeka Egbuka, Benjamin Morrison

Biggest question facing this team: Can someone on this roster, particularly on defense, step it up in the postseason?

Over the last three seasons, the Bucs have won 8, then 9, then 10 games. Nice and steady progression, but not particularly impressive in the woeful NFC South. Over those three years, the NFCS has produced just one winning season that wasn’t by the Bucs when the Saints went 9-8 in 2023.

Over those three seasons, the Bucs only win in the playoffs was against the downward spiraling 2023 Eagles. In their three losses, they’ve gotten zero takeaways, given up at least 350 yards in each game, given up 8 total passing TDs, and sacked the QB just four times.

For all the credit Todd Bowles gets as a defensive mind, his defense isn’t getting the job done when it matters the most. Haason Reddick, who skipped voluntary OTAs, could help in 2025, and then be gone in 2026. Their top defensive draft pick, Benjamin Morrison, has already had two hip surgeries.

And the offense is probably taking a step back, at least early in the season, as Chris Godwin’s return date from a broken ankle is still unclear; and offensive coordinator Liam Cohen ghosted the team to take the Jaguars head coaching job and his replacement is 35 year old first time play caller Josh Grizzard.

One playoff win in three seasons should make this a make or break season for the Todd Bowles, plenty of coaches have been fired for less.

They’ll probably beat the Eagles though, because Todd Bowles has Jalen Hurts’ number. The only win Hurts has against him was Week 3 in 2023, when he had 2 TDs but also 2 INTs, the Eagles won because they held the Bucs to just 11 points.

Lane Johnson on Nick Sirianni: “I think he’s evolved”

Philadelphia Eagles v Detroit Lions

The Eagles veteran OT recently spoke about head coach Nick Sirianni and his best qualities.

Eagles’ OT Lane Johnson caught up this week with a couple former teammates, LeSean McCoy and Emmanuel Acho, on their show, “The Facility,” and spoke about head coach Nick Sirianni.

Johnson explained that one of the best things about Sirianni is that he’s a very good communicator, and how the head coach always addressed potential distractions, good or bad, as a team so nothing lingered — including the mid-season comments about the passing game last year.

“I think he’s evolved as he’s become a head coach. There’s things, you know, he had some vocal stuff on the sidelines, but he’s addressed stuff with the team when he’s wrong, and I think that makes him human, makes him vulnerable, and I think it makes guys communicate more effectively with him.

The OT also said that Sirianni is very passionate and competitive, and that helps get the guys motivated.

Eagles players made an effort last season to encourage the head coach to be himself, and he seems to have taken their advice. Now that Sirianni has signed a new contract keeping him in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future, it’s nice to hear how much guys respect him.

Biggest question facing this team: Is JJ McCarthy it?

Perhaps no team illustrates how the NFL is all about the QB than the Vikings. They have a Super Bowl caliber trio of pass catchers in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and TJ Hockenson. They have a Super Bowl caliber defense. They have a Super Bowl caliber coaching staff.

None of it matters if JJ McCarthy can’t play football.

McCarthy was a polarizing prospect when the Vikings drafted him 10th overall. He suffered a season ending injury in his first preseason game, robbing him of an entire year of needed development time. Whatever doubts one had about McCarthy, he couldn’t do anything to put any to rest.

This is a really good, well coached roster that just won 14 games with Sam Darnold at QB. Their defense is going to give QBs problems. Their pass catchers will stress any secondary, and open up the run game. The coaching staff got a winning performance out of a QB who was so new to the team he didn’t know anyone’s name.

The Vikings are ready to win now, though it’s not Super Bowl or bust for them this season. They were right to move on from Sam Darnold, who isn’t it. It would be unfair to make judgement on JJ McCarthy after half a season. But by the time the Eagles roll into town in the middle of the season, we should have some idea if the 2025 Vikings are ready for the big stage.

The Vikings should be too good for this to be a “trap game” but this could be tougher than it seems. The Vikings will be at home and coming off their bye after back to back international games, while the Eagles will be going on their bye after this game.

Biggest question facing this team: Can Jordan Love take the next step?

In 2023, Jordan Love was pretty good for a first time starter. He was 2nd in TD passes as the Packers won 9 regular season games and a playoff game. In 2024, he was… well, pretty good for a first time starter. Love didn’t really progress last season, nor did he regress. For a second year starter, plateauing isn’t the worst outcome.

But Jordan Love is not your typical third year starter, because he spent his first two seasons as a backup. Love is older than and was drafted before Brock Purdy, Justin Fields, and Trevor Lawrence, yet has fewer career passing attempts including the playoffs. He is only four months younger than Jalen Hurts. By the end of the season, there could be eight NFC teams starting a QB younger than Love.

While the rest of the roster is still in a rebuild mode, the QB position isn’t. Though the Packers can’t get out of Love’s contract until after next year, this is a make or break season for him. It is possible that by the end of the season he’s the best QB in the NFC North and the Packers are Super Bowl contenders. It is also possible that by the end of the season Love is the worst starting QB in the NFC North.

It is a bit reductive to say that everything hinges on the QB, but if your $100M guaranteed QB can’t carry your team, you’re just treading water.
