Phinsider Question Of The Day: What Can They Do Edition

Miami Dolphins Introduce Mike McDaniel

It’s that time of year when anyone writing for the NFL or any NFL team is busy trying to find something, anything, to write about. We here at the Phinsider aren’t immune. Most writers have a list of minimums they need to meet as authors for any website or publication, which naturally pushes them to write about nearly anything they can link to the NFL or the team that they cover. Luckily, the Miami Dolphins usually manage to generate enough news to have at least one story that we can stretch out for a bit. While this can be fortunate if you write about the team, it’s not always as lucky if you’re also a real fan of the team you cover, because far too many of those stories that keep the Phins in the news are less than positive.

The latest story is that the Dolphins are either a focus or at least part of a list, and that head coach Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat as we approach the 2025-2026 NFL season. McDaniel does not have to face this offseason's challenge alone, as general manager Chris Grier is also reportedly on the hot seat. Building a consistently winning NFL team that can challenge for a championship requires many skilled people, so when that doesn’t happen, it often costs some of them their jobs. They are now working and coaching with their jobs on the line. What would they need to do to change the story?

So the Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

What do Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel have to do to get them off the “hot seat” and keep their jobs? What would you have to see from the team this coming season to believe that one or both of them deserve to keep their job beyond this coming season?

Time for Tua Tagovailoa to deliver - The Splash Zone 7/12/25

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

When Tua Tagovailoa is on the field, the Miami Dolphins always have a good chance of winning the game. But that’s been the problem. He hasn’t been able to stay on the field. While his stats have been great, the injury history has always been a concern. In 2023, Tua had his best season and the team looked poised to make a nice playoff run. But the Dolphins are blessed with bad luck and got decimated by injuries all over the roster late in the season. With a ton of offensive pieces returning and some hopeful upgrades, Tua and the Dolphins offense should be set up for success.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Ndamukong Suh announces retirement officially ending Hall of Fame career

Buffalo Bills v Miami Dolphins

Former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh announced his retirement on Saturday.

Defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh has not played in two years, but he had not announced any plans to retire from the NFL, ending a Hall of Fame career that lasted 13 years. That changed on Saturday when the 2010 Defensive Rookie of the Year took to X to officially end his NFL career.

Suh, in the post, stated that losing his father on July 12, 2024 was the hardest day of his life. Before his dad passed away, he told Suh, “It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter.” Exactly a year later, Suh officially hung up his cleats.

Suh was drafted second overall in 2010 by the Detroit Lions. He immediately made an impact, recording 66 tackles, one interception, three passes defensed, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, and 10 sacks in his rookie year, being selected to the Pro Bowl and as a First-Team All-Pro along with his rookie of the year award.

In March 2015, Suh signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent, setting a new record for the highest-paid defensive player in league history as he agreed to a six-year, $114 million contract. He spent three years with Miami before he was released in a salary cap savings move. During his three seasons in Miami, he tallied 181 tackles, 13 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 15.5 sacks. He was selected as a Second-Team All-Pro in 2016, as well as making the Pro Bowl, joining four all-star selections he had with Detroit.

Following his time with Miami, Suh played a season with the Los Angeles Rams, three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the 2022 season included eight games with the Philadelphia Eagles, joining the team midseason in a playoff push.

He won Super Bowl LV with the Buccaneers after the 2020 season.

He finished his career with three First-Team All-Pro selections, two Second-Team selections, and five Pro Bowls. He recorded 600 tackles, one interception, 38 passses defensed, five forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries with three touchdowns, and 71.5 sacks. He was named to the NFL All-Decades Team for the 2010s.

“I left it all on the field, and now I’m stepping away with peace and gratitude,” Suh said in his statement as he ended the reflection on his career before transitioning to the “next season” of his life which will include work to help “athletes, entrepreneurs, and young people navigating life and money.” He has started the “No Free Lunch” podcast as part of that goal.

Suh is destined to be in the Hall of Fame. He will likely be selected in 2027, his first year of eligibility for enshrinement in Canton.

You can read his full statement, as well as check out the incredible pictures of him with his father in a thread on X, starting with this post:

July 12, 2024 was the hardest day of my life.

It’s the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself.

Tua Tagovailoa not ranked in top-half of league in ESPN quarterbacks list

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Tagovailoa falls to 17th in latest QB rankings by ESPN.

As ESPN continues to release their rankings regarding all positions across the National Football League as voted on by NFL executives, coaches and scouts, the quarterbacks list was going to come out eventually.

The quarterback position is widely considered the most important position in all of sports, not just football, so it is easy to see why it is such a hot-button topic for fans across the league — but especially with fans of the Miami Dolphins and their quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.

In 2024, following a stellar 2023 campaign that saw Tagovailoa throw for a league-leading 4,624 yards accompanied by 29 passing touchdowns, fans were surprised to see the former Alabama Crimson Tide product miss out on top-ten honors — instead coming in at #14 on ESPN’s list which placed him in the “honorable mentions” category.

After a frustrating 2024 season marred by multiple injuries (a common theme for Tagovailoa), Miami’s quarterback fell in ESPN’s rankings — coming in at #17 on the list, just barely cracking the “also receiving votes” section.

Tagovailoa ranks just behind elder statesman Aaron Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Steelers and just ahead of Bo Nix of the Denver Broncos who is coming off of an impressive rookie year.

As is always the case with the Dolphins passer, health (or the lack-thereof) will be the biggest reason why Tagovailoa doesn’t get the same respect as most of his peers. When healthy, the 27-year-old puts up high-end numbers while leading Miami to more wins than losses — but when he misses time (which happens quite often), the Dolphins can’t make up for his absence and suffer losses at an alarming rate because of his fragility.

This offseason, the team and the quarterback alike have discussed Tagovailoa’s goal to place an increased importance on his health. Let’s see if that goal can become more than words when the Dolphins hit the field for meaningful football games in roughly two months time.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Should He Really Be Ranked That Low Edition

NFL: Miami Dolphins Minicamp

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

If you've been a long-time Phins fan, you've seen the team's quarterback serve as the fans' favorite punching bag during most seasons, ever since Marino decided to hang it up. You don’t have to be a long-time fan to notice the trend after the fan base frequently roasted Ryan Tannehill before being traded away. Tua Tagovailoa was then drafted to take his place both as the starter and as the newest and shiniest punching bag. That’s not to say that Tua doesn’t have many of us in the fan base who are big fans, but you could say the same for many of the guys between him and Marino. I suspect this is how it is with most fan bases whose team is consistently on the losing end of things.

Even some of Tua’s detractors, for the most part, see him as at least a halfway decent quarterback. Then there are the two other ends of the spectrum, those who think he’s the greatest or at least one of the very top QBs currently in the NFL, and those who believe that he’s the worst thing ever or at least very close to it. I guess there is also the fourth group of fans, those who love him or hate him, depending on whatever his latest results are. So why am I bringing up the topic that gets beaten to death? Earlier today, our own Marek Brave posted a story about Tua being ranked in the bottom half of the league at 17th best overall QB.

So this evening's Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

Do you think that ESPN’s ranking of Tua Tagovailoa is just about right, too low, or too high, and why?

Breaking down the Dolphins offensive line - The Splash Zone 7/15/25

NFL: Las Vegas Raiders at Miami Dolphins

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

The Miami Dolphins offense was a mess last season and there were a variety of different reasons as to why that was. The offensive line was one of those problems as the unit dealt with injuries and underwhelming players. The Dolphins made sure to bring in some new players and hopefully they can help this offense get back to where is was. The team should have two new starting guards with James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea, both of whom will be major upgrades at guard. But all eyes will probably be on Patrick Paul as he takes over at left tackle after Terron Armstead announced his retirement this offseason.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Your Miami Dolphins Team Leaders

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Miami Dolphins

Jasen Vinlove-Imagn Images

There have been rumors for some time now that our Miami Dolphins would like to add Asante Samuel Jr. to the roster to fill one of the bigger holes on the roster. Then came the news last week that Asante’s father, Asante Samuel Sr., had criticized the Dolphins for their lack of leadership. With that in mind, I asked the following question:

Do you agree with Asante Samuel Sr. that the team lacks leadership? If so, who do you think needs to step up this coming season to change that narrative? If you disagree, who on the offense, defense, or coaching staff do you consider leaders of the team?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

LSC20&Olney has an outline of what they are looking for in the team's future leaders.

I just hope that when the new leaders do step up that they have a solid work ethic and positive attitude. The new leaders should put the team above all else. We permit some of the most destructive and divisive people wear the “C” on their uniforms. I don’t care who votes for them. Coaches need to step in and simply say NO to people who quit on their teammates and those that divide a locker room.

Dolfanjoe says get out of the way, it’s going to handle itself!

The leaders will start to emerge in training camp. It will take care of itself..................

Yarganaught says you don’t have to yell to be the guy that the others follow...

Just because someone is loud, and even good at their role, doesn’t always make them a leader. Does making a player a “Captain” make them a “Leader”... no. I expect to see Jackson step up to be the leader of the O-line. I expect Seiler to be the leader of the D-line. I even expect Minkah F. to step into the role of the leader for the Secondary. I guess the real question in my mind is will Waddle step up to be the leader of the Receivers, or will Hill drown him out? Ideally, you expect your QB to be that Leader, but I just don’t see it from Tua, regardless of the smoke McDaniel tries to blow up our bums.

DolfaninME is not down with that, whatever that is!

F that. I have witnessed many acts of leadership from Tua. I saw him horsecollar an O L arguing with a defensive player and drag him back to the huddle. That is leadership. You just watch him on the field you know who the leader is. With regard to Ramsey, Miami didn’t want him and got rid of him and got Minkah in return. That tells the team that they will dump guys who aren’t on board.

Francesco ITA has a link to a good story to check out.

Interesting and spot on article on CBS.com about the Dolphins

It basically say all the things we are saying everyday here (except the deluded hopefuls club)

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/after-a-tumultuous-offseason-its-time-for-dolphins-to-prove-they-have-the-fortitude-of-a-real-contender/

coach k 13 is old.

All i can do is hope for the best, just like the last 45 years and hope we get one more Superbowl before i expire!!!! GO DOLPHINS!!!!, no matter who the leaders are.

sdphinsfan says they are positions that need to be filled. But who will those guys be?

If we’re asking the question, we already have the answer. When you watch a team play a game, you see who the leaders are. If you don’t see them, it’s a good indication you don’t have them, or you have the wrong ones.....

To me, that’s the rub. Ramsey was touted as a leader. Bad choice. Hill is touted as a leader...Bad choice. TA was touted as a leader. Good choice if you can look past all the snaps he wasn’t out there for. CC...obviously a leader.

In this regard, we’re a team in transition in the leadership department with a vacuum at the top.

Lefty55555 sees the coaching staff allowing the players to make the rules the root of the problem.

Flo never had this problem. Ramsey would have been late once and then fined, twice suspended, three times traded. That is how you set culture. You hold the best players accountable even if it means you have to play with less talent on Sunday. This regime has let the players make the rules. THIS DOES NOT NOW NOR NEVER HAS WORKED. Someone has to be the bad guy and that guy is your head coach. Our HC just does not seem to have that in him although they are one move away from making me think they are trending in the right direction. That move is to trade Tyreek. I would rather lose with team-oriented men than win (not playoff games mind you) with prima donnas.

herbert pollack says the issue is that there needs to be an upgrade in the roll.

The team doesnt lack leadership it lacks good leadership

SlayerNation1 believes that there are no natural leaders currently on the roster that we know of.

https://youtu.be/Sd80QsMDeUI?si=00dTcQQXi61J7Gu2

The team is bereft of Leaders in the truest sense. They have players who aren’t natural born but thrown into the role by default.

Sieler is probably the closest but I don’t get the vibe He is comfortable in the role. Tua is a leader again by default as the QB1 usually is, not in the “take over games, pit the team on my back” sense.

Minkah will be a Captain, again by default.

Assante Sr. could very well have lifted the comments nearly verbatim from this forum.

Florio’s essay on Ross being a NY absentee guy resonates even more. Ross throws money around but I question His commitment to building a Winner in fact (capital W, meaningful Winning).

Again, pejorative adjectives peppered throughout assessments of this organization: soft, rudderless, spineless, clueless…

2026, I have to hold out hope for change, new vision and new voices. The Riddick/Weaver ticket should generate some votes.

That’s our random ten comments for this evening. The consensus is that there’s probably not one, at least as to who or how this team will find its leadership. There is agreement that there is a lack of leadership, so at least we have that in common. Thank you, as always, to each of you who took the time to read and respond to our Phinsider Question Of The Day.

Tyreek Hill still ranks highly in ESPN wide receivers list despite down year

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Tyreek Hill comes in at #3, while Jaylen Waddle receives votes in latest ESPN rankings.

As we continue to examine ESPN’s list of the top-ten players at each position in the National Football League, we finally come to a position where the Miami Dolphins are well represented — wide receivers.

The Dolphins have two speedster receivers who are mentioned — one in the top-ten, while the other was mentioned in the “receiving votes” category (as was Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa).

Even after a down year, Tyreek Hill has the respect of NFL executives, coaches and scouts — clocking in at #3 on ESPN’s list. That means the 31-year-old receiver only dropped one spot from last year’s rankings where he came in at #2 on the list despite his monumental drop in production from 2023 to 2024 (840 yards less receiving and 7 less touchdowns).

Here is what an unnamed NFC executive had to say about Hill:

He still impacts how you prepare for them so much due to his speed. He dictates so much. His speed hasn’t fallen off, despite the down year.

A veteran AFC scout chimed in:

Even if he’s lost a half-step, he’s still more explosive than everyone — power with raw speed. I do think defenses have made some adjustments to that (Miami) offense, letting him run around with window dressing and limiting big plays.

Hill comes in just behind top ranking receiver Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Dolphins’ highly paid #2 receiver, Jaylen Waddle, was also mentioned in ESPN’s rankings — receiving votes while not cracking the top-ten. If you take those listed in that category in order, Waddle was ranked as the 25th best wide receiver in the NFL.

It’s no surprise that Miami’s wide receivers are well represented on ESPN’s top-ten list — as Miami’s offense has performed at its best when Hill and Waddle are both healthy and productive. If the Dolphins want to return to the offensive heights of the 2022 and 2023 seasons, they’ll need both speed demons contributing heavily in 2025.

For the entire list from ESPN, click here.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Would He Be Forgiven/Accepted Back Edition

Carolina Panthers vs Miami Dolphins - September 25, 2005

Maybe time does heal all wounds, and maybe Miami Dolphins fans never forget!

Rumors fuel NFL offseason reporting during slow or dead periods. Our Dolphins are no strangers to these rumors, whether they concern players, trades, coaching, front office moves, or the possibilities surrounding each. With the Dolphins' head coach Mike McDaniel clearly entering the 2025-2026 season clearly on the so-called “hotseat,” the rumors of who owner Stephen Ross might go after to turn his franchise around have begun.

There are two names that I have now seen in at least a couple of stories. One is “Chucky,” aka Jon Gruden. Gruden, as most of you know, returned to the NFL after a decade away to coach the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018. Gruden made it until the 2021 season when some prior emails that he had previously exchanged with former Washington Commanders GM Bruce Allen were made public. The emails contained racist, misogynistic, and homophobic slurs that eventually forced Las Vegas to fire Gruden for a second time as the head coach of the Raiders.

The second name surprised me because it was former Dolphins head coach Nick Saban. Saban previously coached the Dolphins from 2005 to 2006. As the 2006 season approached its end and the University of Alabama had fired then-head coach Mike Shula, rumors and speculation grew that Saban might be planning to return to college football and leave the Dolphins. During a news conference on December 21st of that year, Saban was asked about the rumor and responded, “I guess I have to say it. I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.” Despite this declaration, on January 3rd, Saban informed Dolphins owner Ross that he would indeed accept the Bama job and leave Miami. This lie became a perceived betrayal by much of the fan base once he did officially leave the team.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

If Stephen Ross were to go after Nick Saban to bring him once again back to South Florida to coach our Miami Dolphins, would you be okay with that, given all the time that has passed? Do you think the fan base as a whole would accept him back? What is your take on some of the other rumored possibilities to be the next head coach of the Dolphins? Who would you go after to turn this thing around if it were your sole decision?

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

Training camp is just around the corner for the Miami Dolphins as they go through a sort of youth movement. The Dolphins drafted plenty of players who should be able to help out in their first season in the league. DT Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips were sorely needed on the d-line that lacked size and youth. The rookie that may surprise though is CB Jason Marshall. The Dolphins are looking for two new starting cornerbacks and besides Kader Kohou, someone is going to have to step up. Maybe that will be Marshall who brings size to the position and should get plenty of opportunities to prove himself during the preseason.

What Gets Them Off The Hot Seat According To You

Miami Dolphins Introduce Mike McDaniel

This season for the Miami Dolphins appears to be a bit of a roster reset, given the players who are now gone and the ones who have been added. Another notable aspect for this season is that both the head coach and general manager are reportedly on the hot seat. With that in mind, I asked the following question:

What do Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel have to do to get them off the “hot seat” and keep their jobs? What would you have to see from the team this coming season to believe that one or both of them deserve to keep their job beyond this coming season?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

stldolfan66 says win the division and a playoff game, or get out.

Win the AFC East title, and then win their first playoff game. Anything less should result in the immediate dismissal of CG and MM. There may be some related front office reorganization. I won’t pretend to be qualified to micro-manage exactly what they should do, that’s on them to earn their big bucks.

TheRoo1 will settle for just the playoff win.

What do they have to do? Win a playoff game. Anything less is a plane ticket for one of them, and based on past history, most likely McD.

And it doesn’t necessarily have to be at season end, I wouldn’t be surprised if at week 12 or so a losing record at that point doesn’t get McD removed so that Weaver can not just be promoted but be signed for several years to keep him off next years coaching carousel.

Dolfanjoe, like most of us, believes that McDaniel is gone without a playoff victory and that Grier is probably not going anywhere, even if it means changing his title and hiring the next person to replace him as GM.

This according to many fan’s is a team that sucks. Others like me see a team with 10 wins at least. Many have McD fired before or after the season ends. Most like me believe whatever happens Grier will survive it even if it means hiring his own replacement as GM ! Moving up the ladder as head of football operations. But with that said, depth is the biggest question mark going into the season and has been for a number of seasons. For years the fan base said we do not have enough stars to get there. Well we have the stars now ! And yes it comes with a price. You cant just get all the good player depth behind your first string as free agents. This takes years of drafting and development. Players drafted and locked in for 4 years waiting to replace the starters. They did over spend at the end of this 5 year rebuild. But at the same time Grier has us set up for a continual rebuild going forward. 2025 is now an interesting year for us. Questionable depth at many positions, but fairly strong at others. Injuries will happen, but where and when ? Could this O line survive two starters missing 6 weeks ? Tua going down for 6 weeks again, do we have enough backup there to win half those games ? Will McD change his pass first game into a power game of running the football, and will it work ? If it does, with the receiving corp. we have we will win games and at times look dominant ! But when that injury bug does hit, will we have enough behind it to survive ? McD will be here next year if we make the playoff’s. Gone if we do not. New GM will want his own Coach, QB and control. We would see another rebuild minus the good young players we already have. Regardless of the outcome going forward i should hope we all enjoy the season. Like McD we are going to be elated, or we are looking at pretty dam good draft picks ! So can we really lose ?

cyberflea believes that Ross’ blind loyalty will save Grier.

If anyone goes, it will be McD. Ross is too loyal to Grier and will more than likely retain his job unless the season is a complete catastrophic failure.

dedstrk316 is another who sees Grier’s gig as safe no matter what.

Grier is safe. McDaniel needs to show that he has control of the team, a culture shift, the offense gets back on track, and show an ability to adjust schemes and game plans. If we come out and can’t convert third and fourth downs, can’t score in the red zone, can’t get plays on time and play undisciplined on offense, and the defense continues to perform well I’d think Weaver gets the job.

phinette believes that they need to get their s**t together come November and December and not give the whole thing away late in the season like they have done so many times in the past.

Just win, baby. In all seriousness, we need to have a winning record in November and December. Over the years this has been our choke period. We can’t have another late season collapse. If it goes sideways, McDaniel and Grier won’t be the only casualties. I suspect we’ll have a firehouse sale.

DalFinsFan sees one metric that McDaniel needs to improve upon.

Simple metrics for MM, Dolphins were the 9th most penalized team last year. That needs to improve 8 spots to be in the top half of least penalized teams, which speaks to team cohesiveness and execution of plays.

CG is teflon.

Dolphster believes that if you want the answers, you need to be able to read Stephen Ross’ mind.

What we think they need to do to keep their jobs and what Ross thinks they need to do to keep their jobs are probably pretty different.

SlayerNation1 believes that the line is drawn with winning a playoff game; the only hurdle to keeping their jobs is doing so.

There needs to be a clear delineation: Playoff WIN or it’s Riddick/Weaver time (for example).

A playoff WIN, would be an accomplishment because let’s face it, it would be a road playoff win.

Time for new vision, new voices. Grier/McD/Tua all share these common threads:

- they have all had more than fair opportunities

- they all seem to have approx 50% proponents and 50% detractors, which is rather the point with all three… they are all 100% Mediocre

I am aware of the old caution “be careful what you wish for” … but I shall take my chances.

I could see Grier surviving. When the stove starts getting hotter, He is turning on McD, out of self preservation. Again, just had too many opportunities to show championship GM skill and hasn’t come remotely close.

Miami7 sees a lot of what people call a rebuild or soft rebuild as necessary, given the mess Grier made of the cap situation.

I’m not sure I feel the same as those stating the Phins are in some sort of soft rebuild. The cap cleanup is not an indication of that, IMO. That very simply HAD TO happen because Grier had put the team on tenuous ground moving forward with poor fiscal mgt/planning/lack of foresight. What is THIS year then? Throw away year? Roll it out & see how it goes and go from there? Hill & Chubb are one more run & done. It’s difficult to even imagine what this team IS without Tyreek?

Their draft suggested a crippled realization that they’d ignored the Interior OL/DL’s far too long, which in no uncertain terms was affected by cap availability (due to Grier’s improprieties) and trade deficits depriving draft picks as well as an AWAKENING that “Hey, we’ve got an immobile injury prone QB and a smaller sized bellcow RB, maybe we should protect & serve”....DUH!!! They drafted out of sheer desperate NEED - while simultaneously doing the same exact GD thing that got em’ in this situation (IGNORING a position group!). Say hello to the shell of Artie Burns skeletal remains that NEVER see the field and those two safeties that’ve never started anywhere before. Now it’s some kinda coup that Grier got Minkah outta the Ramsey/Jonnu deal? REALLY?

If yer ‘actually’ doing a roster rebuild and/or cap cleanup - why in hell would ya do it with the guy that created both problems?

That's our ten random comments for the evening. It seems there's a consensus that McDaniel will need to win at least one playoff game to keep his job. There also appears to be agreement about Chris Grier, with most believing that Ross won't fire him because he's simply too loyal to Grier to let him go. As with every one of these posts, I appreciate each of you who takes the time to answer our question of the day.

Around SB Nation: Who will be the Colts starting quarterback

The Colts will be going through a quarterback competition during training camp and the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts hoped they had their starting quarterback when Anthony Richardson showed flashes during his rookie season. But after being injured and inconsistent, the team brought in Daniel Jones to battle it out for the starting spot. Unfortunately for Richardson, he reinjured his AC joint in minicamp and has been recovering from that. Meaning Jones is getting all the opportunities to show that he can be the starter for his new team. Check out what the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and other NFL teams are talking about in our roundup.

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

The Miami Dolphins are entering the 2025 season in a weird fashion. Over the offseason they sort of went through a mini reset as they got younger on the roster and want to remain competitive after missing the playoffs last season. Many believed the Dolphins would move on from WR Tyreek Hill this offseason after he had a temper tantrum when the season ended and remains in plenty of off the field issues. Unless something drastic happens, he will be with the team this season and his performance should play a huge part in how this team does this season. But is he their most important player?

The Miami Dolphins and offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea agreed to terms on his rookie contract.

The Miami Dolphins will have all of their rookies on the practice field next week when their 2025 training camp opens. Second-round draft pick Jonah Savaiinaea agreed to terms with the team, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. The contract will be a four-year, fully-guaranteed deal, with the guaranteed money the sticking point that prevented the deal from being signed earlier.

The NFL Players Association seems to be making a push this year to turn second-round draft pick contracts into fully guaranteed deals. Savaiinaea was selected with the 37th overall pick and joins, 34th overall pick, Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins, and 35th overall pick, Seattle Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori, as second-round picks with a 100 percent guaranteed contract.

The Dolphins open training camp a week from Saturday and now have all their rookie draft picks under contract. Defensive tackle Kenneth Grant (first round, 13th overall), defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (fifth round, 143rd overall), cornerback Jason Marshall, Jr. (fifth round, 150th overall), safety Dante Trader, Jr. (fifth round, 155th overall), running back Ollie Gordon II (sixth round, 179th overall), quarterback Quinn Ewers (seventh round, 231st overall), and defensive tackle Zeek Biggers (seventh round, 253rd overall) have also signed their rookie contracts.

All rookie contracts are four-year deals, with a fifth-year team option included for players selected in the first round.

Miami will hold 11 practices open to the public this year during its training camp period. ALl the practices will be held at the team’s training facility adjacent to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Sat., July 26 - 9 a.m.
Mon., July 28 - 9 a.m.
Tue. July 29 - 9 a.m.
Wed. July 30 - 9 a.m.
Fri., August 1 - 9 a.m.
Sat., August 2 - 9 a.m. - Season Ticket Members only
Sun., August 3 - 9 a.m.
Wed., August 6 - 9 a.m.
Tue., August 19 - Time TBD
Wed., August 20 - Time TBD
Thu., August 21 - Time TBD - with Jacksonville Jaguars

The Chicago Bears will host the Dolphins in a joint practice session on August 8 at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Detroit Lions will also host Miami in a joint practice session this year, working out together on August 13 at the Meijer Performance Center, Allen Park, Michigan. Both joint sessions are open to the public, but the Lions are limiting that workout to their season ticket members.

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Most Important Edition

Miami Dolphins v Cleveland Browns

Photo by Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty Images

The long wait is over. The Miami Dolphins will begin camp this week with the veterans arriving on Tuesday. The rookies reported this past week. Soon, the preseason games will be upon us, with the first game scheduled to take place at 1:00 PM EST on Monday, August 10th, at the Chicago Bears' stadium. The camp will, of course, allow the coaching staff to decide which players will make the 53-man roster to carry into the regular season, which kicks off on September 4th.

Besides deciding who will be on the roster, players will be practicing and competing in pre-season games for starting positions. But besides making the roster or becoming a starter, who is the most important player for this team on defense for the 2025-2026 season?

So the Phinsider Question Of The Day is a question I just asked:

Who do you see as the Miami Dolphins' most important player on the defense for this upcoming season and why?

Please share your thoughts and answers in the comments section below-

Dolphins defense set to see return of Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb

Carolina Panthers v Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins will add two major pieces to their defense this summer as Chubb and Phillips return from injuries.

The Miami Dolphins open their 2025 training camp on Saturday, beginning the six-week buildup for the NFL regular season. There will be a lot of focus on a team looking to bounce back from an underwhelming 2024 campaign, finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs. There are plenty of questions surrounding this version of the Dolphins, but there is one area that could have answers to their 2024 issues returning soon.

Outside linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are set to return from major injuries this summer. Phillips is looking to get back on the field, and stay there, this year after two shortened seasons the previous two years. In 2023, a torn Achilles tendon sidelined the 2021 18th overall draft pick eight games into the season. After working his way back for Week 1 of 2024, Phillips sustained a torn ACL in Week 4, ending his return almost as soon as it began.

Chubb missed the entire 2024 season after he torn his ACL late in the 2023 season.

The missed playing time from both players opened the door to increased snaps and experience for 2024 first-round pick Chop Robinson, who struggled early but developed into a highly effective pass rusher during his rookie campaign. Now, with Chubb and Phillips ready to return, the Dolphins could have a triple-headed monster among their pass rushers.

Miami may be cautious with Chubb and Phillips early in training camp, giving them rest periods during practices to ensure they are fully recovered and prepared to withstand the entire season. Both players were participants in the team’s Organized Team Activities and mandatory minicamp this offseason, but did not miss some of the drills and on-field work. That same plan could be used to slowly build toward the regular season for one or both of the players.

Phillips recorded seven sacks in his last full season, playing in all 17 games in 2022. Chubb had 11 sacks in 16 games played in 2023. Robinson had six sacks last year, four of which came in the final seven weeks of the year as the rookie adjusted to the speed of the NFL.

As training camp opens for Miami, they are hoping Phillips and Chubb are ready to get back on the field. If they are healthy and productive, and if Robinson is able to continue to grow in his second year, the Dolphins’ pass rush could be elite this season (especially when you add in defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who had 10 sacks each of the last two years). Watching how the two veterans return from injury will be a key storyline to watch this summer.

Where Dolphins Fans Rank Tua Tagovailoa Vs ESPN

San Francisco 49ers v Miami Dolphins

Last week, our own Marek Brave posted a story about Tua being ranked in the bottom half of the league at 17th best overall QB. The story covered ESPN’s rankings of the NFL’s starting quarterbacks. With ESPN having Tua ranked in the bottom half of the league, I asked the following question:

Do you think that ESPN’s ranking of Tua Tagovailoa is just about right, too low, or too high, and why?

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

holland182.0 said this->

He is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the NFL. Clearly currently in the top 3 at minimum. Anybody who can’t see that after all he has done in his career is quite frankly coocoo for cocoa puffs

herbert pollack feels like he fell to the exact right spot on the list.

As in Goldilocks and the 3 bears......just right.

Phin is the Word is eager for another kind of poll.

It’s about right. Now if they ranked QBs by the amount of time they spend trying on different hairstyles, he’s in the Top 3 discussion without question.

Bill Moody believes it's too low, as he’s closer to a top-ten guy.

Too Low IMO. When he’s on his game he could fall anywhere from 7th to as low as 12th. I think his issues with concussions (and thus a questionmark on his availability) is what has him ranked lower in other lists. Also their inability to win against better teams; although, I think this narrative changes this season since we finally face some of those teams at home instead of away.

HunztheMighty likes a guy with good character and believes that he could win the big game with the right team around him.

I think he is a very good QB that has some holes in his game. He is also a young man with alot of character and for me that is huge. I cant stand cheering on people who’s personal lives are repugnant

I think he has the potential to win a superbowl with the right tools around him. Thats all I can ask of my QB. Not all teams have this luxury. When the dolphins play I think there is a chance even when we are down by a score or two. It hasnt been that way for a number of years.

Is he the best in the league, probably not overall, but in some aspects of his game there arent alot of guys playing that can do some of the things he does. I will also say that he seems to have a huge heart and loves the game, not all players do and I think that translates to wins on the field.

Yarganaught hopes that he takes the lower ranking as motivation going forward.

Personally, I don’t care. Objectively speaking, sure he had a down season due to him being injured. One could argue that they were more self-inflicted than anything associated with a breakdown in team performance. He is a NFL starting QB. He has a responsibility to take care of his body and mind. Both on the field and off. That said, it impacted his ranking. I get it... and I hope he gets it too. I hope he read that ranking and got pissed off about it. As much at the ESPN author and the people who voted him so low... as much as he is at himself for allowing his Napoleonic ego to encourage him to do stupid things on the field that got him injured.

Tua if you read this page, stop playing stupid games, because you are only winning stupid prizes.

phinsatx says it either goes right or wrong from here. Safe bet!

The league has always been a what have you done for me lately and it wasn’t great last year. Ideally, the team will run more this year and the play actions will make Tua shine. Or they suck and everybody gets fired.

JUK believes that he will get back into the top ten next year if he stays healthy and the rest of the offense does their jobs.

As an assessment of his on field contribution last year it’s about right. On talent he’s clearly higher. If 1) he can stay healthy and 2) he can finally get average or better O line play for a season, he’ll be top 10 in next year’s list

StanleyDoyle1 sees these sorts of rankings as more of a popularity contest than anything else.

These rankings are like ranking the cool-kids table in middle school. Let’s see - Jayden Daniels has a GOOD year, and suddenly he’s the second coming of.. Mac Jones. Jalen Hurts is surrounded by the best team in football, so that makes him... Trent Dilfer. Jordan Love & CJ Stroud haven’t put together 8 straight good games, much less seasons, but hey it’s more interesting to write about them.

Let’s face what this is really about- the Dolphins and their players are not a new story anymore. Old news, nothing new to see here. Just the same leading-the-league in passing, yards, and completion percentage. What used to count as objective criteria. So if Tua leads the league in touchdowns next year, there will be some other reason for a guy with a beer gut sitting behind his desk to neg him. That’s what this is.

PA phinphan says rankings don't matter, production/winning does.

I really don’t care where he is ranked. He could be ranked #1 or #32. It doesn’t matter. I only care if he leads my favorite team to the promise land and wins. I would love to say he has more super bowl wins than Dan the Man but for now he doesn’t.

That's our ten for this evening. Some of our base clearly believes that the lower ranking is fair, while others think that factors like injuries have caused him to be rated lower than he otherwise would be. There are also those who don’t believe he’s got it at all and wish he wasn’t even there to be ranked. As always, thank you to each of you who took the time to read and respond to our PQOTD post.
