All time great QBs: Miami Dolphins Hall of Famer cracks top 30

Another one will probably land higher on the list.

SB Nation is putting together a list of the 30 best quarterbacks of the NFL’s Super Bowl era. While we all know one Hall of Fame quarterback who will make the list somewhere near the top of the rankings, but a Hall of Fame passer who we might have expected to be overlooked in a bout of recency bias actually did make the list. Bob Griese made the rankings as the 29th-best quarterback of the Super Bowl era.

A key member of the Dolphins three-Super Bowl appearance, two championship run in the early 1970s, Griese was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. Selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 1967 Draft, Griese spent 14 years with Miami. He threw for 25,092 yards during his career, completing 56.2 percent of his passes with 192 touchdowns and 172 interceptions. He was selected to eight Pro Bowl and was twice a First-Team All-Pro selection.

Griese won Super Bowls VII and VIII with the Dolphins, avenging their Super Bowl VI loss. The Dolphins completed the league’s only Perfect Season with the Super Bowl VII victory.

SB Nation brought together a panel of 13 voters to complete their list. Included among the voters were Jarrett Bailey, SB Nation; Tyler Dunne, Go Long; Eric Edholm, NFL Media; Doug Farrar, Athlon Sports; Arif Hasan, Wide Left; Dan Hanzus, Underdog; Sam Monson, The 33rd Team; Steve Palazzolo, The 33rd Team; Gregg Rosenthal, NFL Media; Aaron Schatz, FTN Fantasy; Marc Sessler, Underdog; Mike Tanier, Too Deep Zone; and Matt Verderame, Sports Illustrated.

Just behind Griese on the list was former Detroit Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The initial release of the countdown included quarterbacks 30 to 21. Len Dawson, Johnny Unitas, Ken Stabler, Ken Anderson, Joe Namath, Lamar Jackson, Philip Rivers, and Josh Allen were included in the list. Each quarterback’s high and low rankings and an explanation from one of the panel members about the quarterback’s rankings was published along with the list.

Griese was ranked as high as 19, but was also not included on at least one list. Mike Ranier wrote of Griese, “Imagine Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford were one guy. That’s Bob Griese. Yes, he was a product of a system, a supporting cast, and an era. But Griese also called his own plays. His statistics are ordinary because he knew he didn’t have to throw very often to win. Griese evolved into one of the NFL’s most efficient passers as the 1970s wore on, and Don Shula’s tactics evolved with him, paving the way for Dan Marino and the passing explosion of the 1980s. Griese was always just a little injured, however, and his career ended just as the schedule expanded and the passing-friendly rule changes of 1978 were taking effect. Griese is easy to dismiss when you look at his stat lines, but impossible to ignore once you realize how different pro football was in 1973 than it is today.”

The good part of this is Griese got the recognition he is due. He easily could have been overlooked - and was on at least one ballot - but he is a Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Dolphins to three straight Super Bowl appearances - the first time in NFL history that had happened - even if he missed a large portion of the 1972 season due to injury.

The bad part is, he ranked before Joe Namath, who may be the most overrated Hall of Fame quarterback of all time. “Broadway Joe” really makes the list mostly because he played for the New York Jets and brought with him a flashy style. The 24th-ranked quarterback on this list threw 220 interceptions in his career, nearly 50 more than his 173 touchdown passes.

I just cannot bring myself to consider Namath a better quarterback than Griese, especially since they played in the same era and can easily be compared.

Josh Allen is the other interesting piece of this list. It is somewhat a surprise that recency bias did not push Allen further up the list. But, it also brings up the debate of Allen ranking two spots ahead of Lamar Jackson. Who should be ranked higher between Allen and Jackson? That should be a fun debate between Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens fans.

For the Dolphins, there is still one more quarterback who will be on the list. Dan Marino should be near the top of the list, though his lack of Super Bowl championships will likely push him down some. Where will Marino land? We will find out soon.

Do you think Griese is properly rated in this list? Let us know in the comments.

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

The Miami Dolphins enter a season where expectations are a mixed bag. The offense still has plenty of pieces to keep the team in games, but there are concerns with the defensive secondary and how the team approached it this offseason. Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel certainly didn’t approach the offseason like their jobs were on the hot seat, but many believe this is a make or break season for those two. If things go bad this season, it wouldn’t be shocking to see both men looking for new jobs after the season.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Your 2025 Dolphins Defensive Stat Leaders

Tennessee Titans v Miami Dolphins

Following the post on 2025 offensive team leaders, I posted the following question:

What’s your prediction for who will lead the Miami Dolphins defense and special teams in any statistical category? Give us your list of leaders, along with statistical numbers, if you also want to predict those.

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

Dolfanjoe has Seiler leading the way.

Seiler is the unquestioned quiet leader of this defense!

sdphinsfan has the trio of pass rushers going off.

I don’t know if he’ll lead in anything statistically, but I think Seiler cements himself as the leader of the Defense. The trio of Chop, Chubb, and JP will end up with between 25-30 sacks as a group. And I won’t be surprised if Grant finds himself in the conversation for DROY. He’ll have opportunities...

SlayerNation1 has an LB leading the team in INTs.

Malik should have all the return yards.

Sacks : Sieler 12, Chop will improve but still single digits

Chop will get the pressures, never been a finisher

Tackles: whatever Safety is best at tackling

Interceptions: Dotson with 3 again, yes a LB leading the team in Interceptions again for obvious reasons.

Weaver: leads the organization in HC interviews for 2026

JUK has Chop as the team's leader in sacks.

This is much more difficult than the offensive side. We’ve got 4 good candidates for sacks/pressures but I’m going to go for Chop. Tackles is easy - Brooks. Interceptions… who knows???

glen55, Like most of us, is worried about that secondary.

Interesting choice putting Chop in the header photo with 2 veteran sack artists on the roster. But if I had to put money on one of them he is the one I would go for.

I hope one of the cornerbacks gets more than 1 pick. That position still has me scared.

Yarganaught believes the team will have a top-5 defense.

Washington to return... But if this is Hill’s last season as a Dolphin, I might use him. Perhaps that way he can claim some sort of large number of all-purpose yards at the end of the season (because Waddle may get more receiving yards).

I don’t see one stand-out sack leader, but a high total of them shared between Seiler, Grant, Chop, Chubb, and Phillips. Opponents aren’t going to know who to block, or might have a difficult time accounting for them all during any given game.

Tackles will be Brooks.

I actually see the CBs taking advantage of rushed passes, and coming up with more INTs than we’ve seen in recent years.

Top 5 Defense with <20pts per game average.

JPeay has the defense going off.

Return yards: Malik Washington, Tackles: will definitely be Jordan Brooks (top 5 in the league), Sacks: if healthy our big 3 (Chop, Chub, Phillips) will all produce 8+, Ints: I think with a more expanded role in Weavers defense will lead to a breakout year for Ashtyn Davis with 5+. Honor Mention: Sieler 6+ Sacks, Iffy & Kohu 3+ Ints. Top 5 defense overall....Go Fins!!!

The post was a bit slower than I like, but such is the way the Summer goes around here. It appears that the fans have a great deal of confidence in this defense heading into the season. Thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our question of the day.

Miami Dolphins Player/Personnel You Would Attempt To Sway

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

As I have long since run out of lay-up questions to ask last week, I posted the following question:

If you could convince any person within the Miami Dolphins organization, whom would you convince and what would you convince them of? It can be a player, a coach, or anyone else within the organization, from the owner right down to the ball boy.

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

MIAMI235 would have tried to convince the team not to make one of the stupidest moves they have made, and that’s saying something.

I would’ve convinced ownership to get AVG to stay with us !

holland182.0 is primarily concerned with the scantily clad women who work for the team.

I don’t know who is in charge of the cheerleaders, but I think they should look into making them put more clothes on. It’s a family environment folks.

PA phinphan would tell Mike to get some help with the play calling.

I would convince McDaniel to give up play calling duties and stop trying to outsmart the other team.

finfanfromsiam is still bent about the logo change.

I would convince whom ever changed the helmet logo to @$$%^ change it back!!!! Finklestien shit kid damn!!!

Dolfanjoe wants to get the kids in the mix.

Convince Ross to just have a kids game at the stadium ! No cost, free food. No beer of course ! Extra police protection for safety. Free parking for the parents and school buses. One game, sure it will cost him millions ! But i am sure he will write it off on his taxes !

glen55 says- Stop looking back!

I would convince the fans to look to the future and not to past years without a playoff win.

SlayerNation1 just seems to want a new owner.

It has to be ownership. The need for “dawg” mentality doesn’t end with players and coaches, it is a true trickle down.

An older owner with no connectivity to the team prior to ownership really isn’t going to be consumed with meaningful winning. Ross is so disinterested that He rarely can be found speaking about this team.

He offers lip service, at best, about not settling for status quo. Those words aren’t wort the air into which they are uttered.

Sell the team to someone half His age. Someone for whom being a billionaire just isn’t enough.

The A+ facilities is great, but it can get so over-the-top that it attracts FAs who are looking for amenities over winning. I want players who want to Win, with a capital W and facilities are important, but lower in priority. Hmm …I am somehow reminded of an all too current situation…

SuperG! needs help with his new hat.

I’d convince Ross to “Make The Cafeteria Dolphins Great Again”! Now if I only knew someone who could make me an aqua and orange MTDGA hat...

Yarganaught would tell Tua that the team needs to start getting their money's worth by staying healthy.

I would convince Tua to play in all 17 games (20 if you count the Playoffs), and to put up numbers so good, that they reconsider entry guidelines to the Football Hall of Fame, and just enter him right after hoisting the Lombardy.

Miami7 has a solid list to roll with.

1 - Convince Ross to either sell the team to someone with at least an inkling of football acumen

........thereby eliminating Grier & ‘hopefully’ leading to a GM with a clue - and who doesn’t flip-flop his roster building philosophy.

1a - the ‘new’ GM building a team properly & not on whims of fancy or by throwing money around like it’s Monopoly money all willy-nilly

2 - Convince Ross (before he sells or finds a clue) to change the uniforms back to the historical, legacy built originals - with maybe some VERY minor tweaks, but not the effeminate things they wear now.

3 - Convince the ‘new’ GM to find a coach that will provide a stable, highly competitive atmosphere for years to come

4 - Convince Ross to MAINTAIN his ownership of facilities and new business development - just leave anything & everything directly involved with the on field (team) product to ANYBODY else

5 - Convince - WHOEVER the new powers that be might be that finding one-a those

‘needle in a haystack/one of only 4-5 guys on the planet’ QB’s are THE ANSWER to 90% of their on-field issues

That’s our random ten comments for this evening. Thank you, as always, to each of you who took the time to read our post and answer our question of the day.

Raheem Mostert not a fan of Miami Dolphins trade of Jonnu Smith

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Mostert criticizes Miami Dolphins after trade of Pro Bowl tight end.

The Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers consummated a blockbuster trade on Monday that sent cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a late round draft-pick swap.

The trade was applauded by some and criticized by others, but count former Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert as someone who was not a fan of the move.

In a social media post, Mostert had this to say about Miami jettisoning their Pro-Bowl tight end:

Hot take: Be a Pro-bowler on the Dolphins, get treated like sh*t. Happy for my guys though! GO BALL OUT!! https://t.co/RyDBVE8h1i

— Raheem Mostert (@RMos_8Ball) June 30, 2025

Mostert played for the Dolphins for three seasons — earning a Pro Bowl nod himself after a 2023 campaign that saw the back run for 1,012 yards and a franchise record 18 rushing scores. Following that season, Mostert signed a contract extension with Miami, but following an injury riddled year in 2024, he was cut and subsequently signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Clearly, that move didn’t sit well with the now 33-year-old player.

The trade of Smith comes after the tight end made his frustrations known regarding his contract with the Dolphins. Smith’s agent — Drew Rosenhaus — said the tight end’s preference was to stay in Miami, but with a significant raise in pay. Instead, the Dolphins packaged Smith with Ramsey to re-acquire Fitzpatrick who was originally drafted by Miami in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Dolphins seemingly remain focused on getting younger — and cheaper — while they look to re-tool their roster in an effort to remain competitive in the years to come.
