Chargers WR Ladd McConkey named amongst NFL’s top 25 under 25

Denver Broncos v Los Angeles Chargers

After a breakout, record-setting rookie season in 2024, Ladd McConkey was named among the league’s best players under the age of 25.

The Chargers traded up in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft to select Ladd McConkey in hopes that he’d help the team’s passing attack heading into year one under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Even if you were high on McConkey following his selection, I don’t think anyone would have expected him to have the type of record-breaking season he put together a season ago.

After managing to record 50 or more receiving yards just once in his first six professional games, McConkey broke out for 111 yards and six touchdowns against the Saints in Week Seven. From there until the end of the team’s postseason run, McConkey would go on to record 50 or more receiving yards in every single game, highlighted by a career-high 197 yards in the team’s wild card contest against the Houston Texans.

By the end of the regular season, McConkey had also set the record for the most receptions and receiving yards by a rookie in Chargers history. Then, against Houston, McConkey’s 197 yards also set the NFL record for most yards by a rookie in a playoff game.

This offseason, McConkey is continuing to earn his flowers. In a new article from the folks at Pro Football Focus, McConkey came in ranked 19th among their top 25 NFL players under the age of 25. He landed one spot ahead of the Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. and is the fourth-ranked wide receiver on the list.

“The gap between McConkey and fellow 2024 rookie Brian Thomas Jr. is razor thin, but McConkey ultimately gets the edge after ranking second among all rookie receivers in PFF receiving grade (85.0), PFF overall grade (84.3) and PFF WAR (0.47) — all just ahead of Thomas,” says analyst Jonathon Macri.

“McConkey even led all rookies in yards per route run (2.59) and ranked in the top five among all players at the position in 2024.”

It's a little detail but I love how Ladd McConkey is always working back to the ball in zone coverage, even on horizontal-breaking routes. This makes him a QB-friendly target and helps create more YAC opportunities in an area lacking many young WRs.

He has everything you want… pic.twitter.com/7obvYs1lFP

— Matt Harmon (@MattHarmon_BYB) May 7, 2025

While 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston put up an admirable stat line alongside McConkey, the lowest parts of his season still seem to sting when recalled. Every player has their drops, but it sure did seem like his drops came at the worst of times. Due to QJ’s continued inconsistencies, the Chargers went out and used a second consecutive second round pick on Ole Miss’ Tre Harris. The former Rebel fills the need of a young X wideout that will learn behind veteran Mike Williams early on before presumably earning the starting spot by the end of his first season.

The hope is that Harris develops fast enough to help take the earned attention off of McConkey, and if that does come to fruition, the Chargers passing attack should be able to take a necessary step forward towards become a much more consistent unit in 2025.

Chargers sign 2025 1st round pick RB Omarion Hampton

North Carolina v Florida State

The Chargers have finally put pen to paper as they’ve officially signed first-round RB Omarion Hampton.

The Chargers began the process of signing their 2025 draft class on May 9 when they signed the latter seven of their nine draft picks, beginning with third-rounder Jamaree Caldwell and ending with seventh-round pick Trikweze Bridges.

On Monday afternoon, 10 days later, the Chargers officially announced the signing of former North Carolina running back and 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton.

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) May 19, 2025

According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Hampton’s contract is a four-year, full-guaranteed $17.77 million deal that includes a signing bonus of $9.56 million. With this deal done, the only Chargers 2025 draft pick left unsigned is wide receiver Tre Harris whom the team selected out of Ole Miss in the second round.

Hampton was a two-time First-Team All-American and First-Team All-ACC honoree after both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 3,565 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons with the Tar Heels.

Chargers open as 2.5-point underdogs vs. Chiefs in Brazil

Green Bay Packers v Philadelphia Eagles

The Chargers were chosen to open their season in Brazil against the divisional rival Chiefs, but they aren’t getting the benefit of the doubt in their odds.

We knew for awhile prior to the official NFL schedule release that the Chargers would begin their 2025 season by playing in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Once the schedule release finally arrived, we got the confirmation that they’d be facing a divisional rival in the Chiefs in what should be one of the best games of Week One.

The unfortunate part — and likely unsurprising as well — is that the fine folks in Vegas are not giving the Chargers the benefit of the doubt in this one entering year two under Jim Harbaugh. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Bolts are opening as 2.5-point underdogs to Kansas City. The over/under is currently set at 44.5.

When looking back at the offseason both of these teams had, I don’t think we can say the Chargers made substantial strides in catching up to the Chiefs. Los Angeles seems to have made more of a lateral move then a bonafide step forward and the Chiefs still remain the Chiefs thanks to the retention for their core group of stars for another year. At the same time, these teams always play each other close so these opening odds aren’t surprising in the slightest.

In the comments below, let us know what you all think of the game’s opening odds and whether or not you think they should be higher or lower!

Chargers RB Omarion Hampton projected to lead rookies in several categories in 2025

Los Angeles Chargers OTA Offseason Workout

Chargers first-round running back Omarion Hampton has been projected to lead all rookies in total touchdowns from scrimmage in 2025.

The Chargers drafted running back Omarion Hampton with the 22nd-overall pick in hopes he’d swiftly become the future of the backfield in Los Angeles. How fast that actually occurs will depend on the success — or lack thereof — of fellow backfield mate Najee Harris this season, of course, but there are some analysts that believe he won’t have to wait long before making his mark at the NFL level.

In a new piece over at ESPN, NFL analyst and overall numbers guy Mike Clay went about projecting the rookie leaders in the usual offensive and defensive categories. Hampton saw his name come up several times. The first of which was being ranked second to Raiders first-rounder Ashton Jeanty in total rushing yards with Hampton projected for 961 yards behind Jeanty’s 1,120. However, Hampton is projected to lead all rookies in rushing touchdowns with nine. Jeanty is tied for second with Pittsburgh’s Kaleb Johnson with a projection of seven scores.

“Hampton’s outlook is not as rosy as Jeanty’s, but it’s still pretty strong. Since 2011, eight RBs have been selected in the back half of the first round. Five reached 800 rushing yards (Doug Martin, Najee Harris, Josh Jacobs, Sony Michel and Clyde Edwards-Helaire), while the remaining three were limited to backup/situational roles (Mark Ingram, Rashaad Penny and David Wilson). Hampton will need to fend off newly acquired Harris for work, but the No. 22 pick will likely operate as the lead back in Jim Harbaugh’s run-friendly scheme.”

If Hampton does end up becoming the lead back for the Chargers earlier than expected, then this next ranking for Hampton makes sense. After projected to finish second in rushing yards, Hampton was picked first to lead all rookies in touchdowns from scrimmage with 11, two more than Jeanty in second place.

“The aforementioned past four backs selected in the top seven (Barkley, Richardson, Elliott and Fournette) all produced at least 10 touchdowns as a rookie. So Jeanty reaching double-digit TDs would be on par with the historical production — but I don’t expect him to reach that mark. In fact, I have Hampton ahead of Jeanty in total touchdowns because the Chargers’ offense will likely outscore the Raiders’ unit over the course of the season. Los Angeles will likely score more rushing touchdowns, too.”

At first I was surprised to see Hampton ranked at the top here, but Clay’s argument makes sense. If the Chargers play up to their expectations on offense, I don’t see why Hampton, or Harris, wouldn’t get plenty of opportunities to score. But at the same time, their scoring ceiling will be tied to the play of the interior offensive line. Seeing as that unit did not get all that upgraded this offseason outside of adding former Eagle Mehki Becton, I wouldn’t be surprised if their numbers ended up worse than these by the end of the regular season.

What are everyone’s thoughts on these predictions? Yay or nay? Give us all your thoughts below!

3 Chargers best suited to make the 2028 Olympic Flag Football Team

NFL Pro Bowl Games

Flag football isn’t as close to NFL football as you think. That’s why the best players from the Chargers may not be exactly who you think they’d be.

The NFL owners pushed through the proposal to allow players to participate in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. There’s only room for 10 players on the actual team, meaning there are going to be a lot of good football players who don’t get picked. It also means the majority of NFL teams will likely not be represented, as well.

Because of this, the honor of being able to play this game with the country’s flag on your uniform will be all the more surreal.

I don’t know for sure if there will be a Chargers player picked for the team three years from now, but at this moment, here are my current top three that I believe would have the best chance to make an impact for Team USA.

3.) WR Mike Williams

The field for flag football is quite a bit smaller than a normal field, measuring 50 yards between end zones and 30 yards wide. What stays the same, however, is the end zones remain 10 yards deep.

With such a smaller space to work within near the goal line, larger receivers who are able to make the tough catch through contact and traffic will be all the more imperative to a successful team. Also, if you haven’t watched flag football before, the quarterbacks are essentially scrambling on every play which means they’re making all their passes on the run.

I’ll tell you what, that sounds pretty identical to the plays where Herbert would scramble on crucial downs only to throw it up to Williams for a momentum-changing play. See where I’m going with this? Williams has been one of the best in the NFL in those situations over his career. Yes, he’ll be far too old by the time the 2028 Olympics roll around, but no one can deny his skillset doesn’t fit that style of play like a glove.

2.) S Derwin James

James has been to several Pro Bowl Games since the all-star event switched their game to that format which means he actually already has a decent amount of experience within that style of play. At 6’2 and 215 pounds with immense athleticism, James is simply an all-around good football player, regardless of position. He’s uber-competitive, as well. While he could play safety for the Olympic team, I think James should be near the top of the list for the team’s pass rusher.

Since the free rusher (whom starts seven yards off the line of scrimmage) doesn’t have to fight through massive offensive linemen to get to the quarterback, teams will utilize fast players with elite agility to track down quarterbacks before they can get the ball off. James is already a great pass rusher for a safety in the NFL so this seems like the perfect job for him on the team.

1.) WR/PR Derius Davis

Apart from the niche skills of both Williams and James that help land them on this list, Davis tops the group here for the simple fact that he’s insanely fast with elite agility. While you do need your taller wideouts, Davis complements that skillset by being not just a player who can take the top off the defense and run past everyone, but also as a YAC threat whom quarterbacks can target underneath and let him juke and jive his way around pursuers.

I mean, can you imagine trying to pull a flag off Davis’ belt? It seems like a near impossibility and that’s the exactly what we’re aiming for here.

So what do you all think? Which players do you think could also make a case for being on the Olympic flag football team? Let us know all of your thoughts below!

Chargers were smart to extend this underappreciated defensive standout

Los Angeles Chargers v New England Patriots

After being obtained via trade prior to the 2024 season, Elijah Molden hasn’t just been a solid contributor, he’s been one of the best defenders on the entire Chargers team.

NFL.com’s Tom Blair recently went about picking one underappreciated player from all 32 franchises. This is always one of the usual offseason evergreen articles we see every year, but it never quite gets old as everyone loves to read about players from their favorite team and this topic usually centers around someone that likely hasn’t been in the spotlight all that much.

So according to Blair, it’s 2024 breakout defender Elijah Molden whom he makes the case for as the most underappreciated player on the Chargers. Molden was traded for from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a late-round pick before becoming one of the most impactful playmakers on the team, producing three interceptions, seven pass breakups, and 75 total tackles, all of which were career highs.

Here’s what Blair had to say about the fifth-year safety:

“After a fitfully productive, injury-marred start to his career in Tennessee, Molden was traded to the Chargers last year and flourished under coordinator Jesse Minter, starting 12 games and logging three picks, seven passes defensed and 75 tackles, all personal highs, before landing on injured reserve with a broken fibula. The former cornerback’s switch to safety paid off: He ranked sixth in the NFL at the position in EPA when targeted (-12.3), per NGS, and fit in well with Derwin James and Alohi Gilman. There is something satisfying when a change of scenery really clicks for a player, with a new coaching approach or better surrounding circumstances unlocking an underlying talent or ability to contribute, and that certainly seems to be what happened with Molden, who signed a new three-year pact with the Bolts this offseason.”

Molden was so impactful for the Chargers that the front office did not hesitate signing him to that three-year extension despite his season being cut short to serious injury. In fact, they loved the group they had in that room so much that they made sure to bring both Molden and veteran Tony Jefferson back for another go-round.

In the end, it shouldn’t have been all that much of a surprise. You never should try and fix what isn’t broken and the Chargers showed that by keeping the core together on the back end of the secondary.

Elijah Molden would've never been a Charger if Tom Telesco was still GM, btw.

Chargers fans can now lock in their preseason plans through the month of August.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Chargers finally announced all the confirmed dates and times for their 2025 preseason schedule.

First up, we all know about their opening exhibition game against the Detroit Lions in Canton, Ohio for the Pro Football Hall of Game. That matchup will take place on July 31 at 5:00 p.m. PT.

Their second preseason game against the Saints will be 10 days later on August 10 at 1:05 p.m inside SoFi Stadium. That game will be the first time the Chargers get to face their former head coach and offensive coordinator, Brandon Staley and Kellen Moore, respectively.

Former Chargers star suffers yet another injury with new team

NFL Pro Bowl Games

Former Chargers standout and current Bills pass rusher Joey Bosa has reportedly pulled a calf muscle and will likely be sidelined until training camp.

After nine seasons with the Chargers (both in San Diego and Los Angeles), Joey Bosa was not retained as a free agent this offseason and he eventually signed with the Buffalo Bills in hopes of chasing a bit more postseason success as he enters the twilight of his career.

Unfortunately, his time in Buffalo has already looked par for the course from his last few seasons with the Bolts.

Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Bills head coach told reporters on Tuesday morning that Bosa recently pulled a calf muscle and the injury is expected to sideline him until training camp begins in late July.

#Bills coach Sean McDermott tells reporters that newly signed edge Joey Bosa pulled his calf and will more than likely be sidelined until training camp. RB James Cook, seeking a new deal, is not present.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 27, 2025

During Bosa’s final three seasons with the Chargers, he played in 28 total games while starting 18 in that span. While healthy from 2022-2024, the former third-overall pick posted 52 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, four forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Before moving on from the Chargers, Bosa ended his career in powder blue with 72 sacks, the second most all-time in team history behind Leslie O’Neal.

As someone who has watched Bosa for his entire career, his last three seasons with the Chargers were incredibly tough to watch, and you can only imagine what has been going through his own head during that time, as well. Our fingers are crossed this is just a minor injury and we hope he can bounce back to put together a fairly healthy campaign for Buffalo once the regular season rolls around.

Cam Hart, Daiyan Henley among Chargers working off to side at OTAs

Cam Hart, the team’s 2024 fifth-round pick, suffered a torn labrum against the Texans in the wild card loss and remains uncleared after undergoing surgery in January.

The Chargers commenced their OTAs on Tuesday along with 19 other NFL teams. For the most part, attendance was solid outside of three players. They were left tackle Rashawn Slater, offensive lineman Trey Pipkins, and veteran edge rusher Bud Dupree. These are voluntary of course so nothing to really write home about just yet.

As for players that did attend, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper, a handful of them spent the opening session working off the side away from the main group. They were cornerbacks Cam Hart and Deane Leonard, safety Elijah Molden, linebacker Daiyan Henley, and UDFA wide receiver Luke Grimm.

For those who are unaware, Hart suffered a torn labrum against the Houston Texans in their wild card matchup. He had surgery to repair the labrum later in January but the team has yet to fully clear him for all football activities. Per Popper, Hart does expect to be back and cleared in time for minicamp which begins on June 10.

In his rookie season, Hart started six games and notched 37 total tackles, seven pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

Molden is also recovering from his season-ending injury he sustained late in the regular season against the Buccaneers. Seeing as the team swiftly signed him to a three-year extension this offseason, that likely means the short-term prognosis for Molden’s injury is very positive.

Lastly, there was no word on why Henley worked off to the side but I believe it’s safe to assume he’s working through some minor bumps and bruises.

All in all, not a bad start to OTAs for the Chargers.

Chargers rookie named breakout candidate in Year 1

Tre Harris will look to not only earn a starting job in 2025, but become one of the Chargers best playmakers as a rookie.

At this point in the offseason, 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton has been receiving most of the spotlight in regards to the Chargers’ most recent draft class. It’s easy to why, of course. He’s a big, bruising, and athletic running back that’s set to play in Greg Roman’s run-heavy scheme. All the reasons to believe Hampton will hit the ground running are there.

However, he’s not the only one seemingly with a path to production as a rookie.

Just like in the 2024 draft, the Chargers used their second round pick this year to draft yet another wide receiver in Ole Miss’ Tre Harris. The 6’2, 205-pounder is expected to be the X receiver of the future for the Bolts as the team hopes his outside abilities will complement Ladd McConkey’s skillset out of the slot.

In fact, there are those who believe Harris’ production in his rookie season is directly tied to how success the Chargers can be in 2025.

From a new article by NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha in which he highlights first-year players he believes need to succeed in year one, Harris cracked the list at seventh out of 100 total players included.

“The Chargers hit a home run in the second round last season when they drafted Ladd McConkey, who turned into one of the best slot receivers in the league as a rookie. It would be a blessing for them if Harris, this year’s second-round pick, produces a similar impact. There was no bigger need for the Chargers coming into the offseason than wide receiver. They approached it in free agency by bringing back Mike Williams, who spent seven years with the franchise before playing last season with the Jets and Steelers. Given the inability of Williams to stick with other teams — and the inconsistency of third-year receiver Quentin Johnston — Harris should receive plenty of chances to find a job as a starting receiver on the outside.”

As Chadiha stated above, before the Chargers had the chance to draft Harris they brought back Williams as a means to fill that X receiver role just in case the draft board did not fall in their favor. Luckily things did in fact go there way which means the receiver room is now a whole lot deeper than it was at this time last year.

Chadiha has Harris here on this list because he firmly believes that if he does not pop off as a rookie, the passing game will not likely be all that more productive than it was in 2024. He believes the Chargers’ ceiling truly will come down to how well they can keep a balanced offense. The rushing looks like it just HAS TO be better in 2025 after reshaping that backfield and adding Mekhi Becton at right guard. If the rushing attack is better, than the passing attack must keep pace or else we may be looking at another reasonably successful season that doesn’t exactly end where we think this team deserves to go.
