The Chargers will have the honor of playing in the Hall of Fame Game the same year in which former tight end Antonio Gates will be enshrined.

On Wednesday morning, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that the Los Angeles Chargers and the Detroit Lions will open up the preseason by playing in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The game is scheduled for Thursday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Earlier this offseason, former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was selected as part of this year’s four man enshrinement class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The other three members of the class include defensive end Jared Allen, wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, and defensive back Eric Allen. With Gates entering the hall, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they were picked to play in the annual event.

With this game scheduled, the Chargers and Lions will each have the chance to play four preseason games this summer as opposed to the normal three.

Gates is set to be honored on August 1 in Canton at the Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner and during the Class of 2025 Enshrinement ceremony on August 2. He becomes the 12th former coach or player for the Chargers to be selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, joining Dan Fouts, LaDainian Tomlinson, Kellen Winslow, Junior Seau, and Don Coryell.

Chargers Daily Links: NFL Draft Day 2 Open Thread

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 30 NC State at North Carolina

Your source for all Chargers and NFL news from around the web.

Good morning, Chargers fans!

The Chargers came away from day one of the NFL Draft with excellent grades from a number of analysts from around the media. Many believe running back Omarion Hampton is a perfect fit for what the Bolts want to do, even if there’s some grumblings about the value of a first-round running back in this day and age.

A new pass-catcher is still needed, whether that’s a receiver or tight end. Help along the offensive and defensive interior is also needed. They’ve got two more picks today with plenty of talented players left on the board.

Who do you all want to see make it to the Chargers at No. 55 and No. 86? Let us know in the comments below!

And now for today’s links.

Chargers NFL Draft 2025: Bolts select Oregon DT Jamaree Caldwell with the 86th pick

Illinois v Oregon

The Chargers add to the defensive line by selecting Oregon defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell in the third round.

With the 86th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Chargers selected defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell out of the University of Oregon.

The 6’2, 332-pound Caldwell was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection in 2024 for the Ducks after posting 29 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble. Prior to his lone year in Eugene, Caldwell was a Second-Team All-Big 12 selection for the University of Houston in 2023 after collecting 27 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, a blocked kick, and a forced fumble.

heavy hittaaa pic.twitter.com/TL3Yx7Iv31

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) April 26, 2025

Caldwell is a true nose tackle prospect the Chargers needed to help round out their depth in the middle of their defensive line. After the team lost Poona Ford in free agency, the Chargers added veterans Da’Shanw Hand and Naquon Jones, both of whome figure to be in a heavy rotation alongside Teair Tart and now Caldwell.

Through three picks, the Chargers have hit on players at three positions we expected them to address in this draft. With seven more picks, including four in the sixth round, the Bolts will look to address other positional needs such as tight end and edge rusher.

Chargers NFL Draft 2025: Bolts select KeAndre Lambert-Smith, WR, Auburn

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 19 Auburn at Missouri

Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Chargers continue to add to the wideout room by selecting Auburn wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith who led the Tigers in both receptions and yards in 2024.

With the 158th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers selected wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith out of the University of Auburn.

Lambert-Smith led the Tigers in both receptions (50) and receiving yards (981) to go with eight touchdown catches. He was a Second-Team All-SEC selection and averaged 19.6 yards per reception in 2024.

LA dre pic.twitter.com/vjaU1OLD2q

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) April 26, 2025

The selection of Lambert-Smith looks like an attempt by the Chargers to increase the explosiveness of the wide receiver room when it comes to taking the top off the defense. Lambert averaged nearly 20 yards per carry and ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash at this year’s NFL Combine.

The Chargers must really like what they saw from Lambert-Smith as he now joins a wide receiver room that already features a Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, second-round pick Tre Harris, and veteran Mike Williams. He does not offer special teams value as a returner and he’s not likely to see much playing time as a rookie as the Bolts utilize a good deal of two-wide receiver sets.

This pick leaves me scratching my head a bit, especially given the need for getting younger at tight end and also needed more competition along the interior offensive line.

AWESOME pick for the #Chargers in WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith

In talking to NFL personnel, he had one of, if not the, best week of any @ShrineBowl WR during practices.

At Auburn this year, was a top-5 WR this year at the P5 level in yard per route run, 20+ yard catches and yards… pic.twitter.com/rjPzwNgYWv

How the media is grading seventh round pick Trikweze Bridges

Trikweze Bridges #7 of the Florida Gators looks on during the first half of a game against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium on November 30, 2024 in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Chargers drafted safety Trikweze Bridges in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. We’ve got some draft grades from the media and you can vote as well on the pick.

The Los Angeles Chargers wrapped up the 2025 NFL Draft with a defensive back pick. The team selected Florida defensive back Trikweze Bridges with the 256th overall pick of the draft. Bridges has played safety and cornerback and will need to show that versatility to earn a roster spot. As a late seventh round pick, his roster chances are long. He’ll get his first chance on special teams, but he’ll get a chance to compete in the defensive backfield.

A couple of draft grades have come in, and you can let us know what you think in the poll below.

USA Today: B+

Bridges is all about traits. He started at both cornerback and safety for Florida in 2024 and led the team in tackles. He’s an impressive athlete at 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds with long arms. He’ll need time to develop in coverage but has lots of upside, especially as a special teamer.

CBS Sports: B-

Bridges has a long, filled out frame. He has a consistent history of production at the collegiate level. Bridges will shrink passing windows and has the length to recover down the field.

Mel Kiper gives the Chargers a B+ grade for the 2025 NFL Draft

Omarion Hampton #RB09 of North Carolina participates in a drill during the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on March 1, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mel Kiper sees a nucleus developing on the Chargers roster and thinks this draft class could be a big part of it.

The Los Angeles Chargers wrapped up the 2025 NFL Draft on Saturday and early reviews are positive. The team is in a reloading process under second-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. The team unloaded some key veterans this year, but has started to re-tool the roster to remain a playoff contender.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. put together his annual draft grades on Saturday and he gave the Chargers a B+. He noted the new nucleus appearing for the Chargers and “think some of these 2025 draft picks could be big parts of that.”

Mel Miper draft grade for Chargers: B+

The key picks here are their first few. Omarion Hampton is a three-down back with the ability to hit a home run any time he takes a handoff. He was the only player in the FBS to run for 1,500-plus yards and 15-plus touchdowns in 2023 and 2024. The Chargers also signed Najee Harris, so expect an effective rushing attack to support Justin Herbert. (They used play-action 33.6% of the time last season, second most in the league.)

Tre Harris was the other early pick. The Chargers desperately needed a wide receiver. Ladd McConkey had a great rookie season, but he was also a second-round pick responsible for 29.5% of the team’s receiving yards (1,149). Harris has dealt with some injuries, but he has the talent to take weight off McConkey. Harris went over 1,000 yards despite playing only eight games in 2024.

The Chargers went defense in Round 3. They allowed 4.7 yards per carry last season (27th) and lost Poona Ford in free agency. Defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell is a solid run blocker, and the 332-pounder should improve that area of Los Angeles’ defense (though I might have gone with Yahya Black or CJ West there; both of whom were ranked higher).

I’m surprised the Chargers didn’t address the interior offensive line. I projected Grey Zabel to them in Round 1 in my final mock draft, but the only offensive line addition was sixth-round tackle Branson Taylor. I docked the Chargers a bit there, but there were some good Day 3 finds in their class. Kyle Kennard had 11.5 sacks last season and can help alleviate the loss of Joey Bosa. Oronde Gadsden II catches everything thrown his direction, which is why I listed him as my favorite sleeper tight end in the class. And safety Trikweze Bridges was one of my “Orange Crushers” on “First Draft” this year. I’m a big fan of his game.

Both Hampton and Harris opting for single-digit numbers is amazing. No. 8 is an incredible numbers for a running back and I’m stoked for his professional aesthetic. Same goes for Harris. No. 9 is stellar for him.

Caldwell getting No. 99 is the next best, in my opinion. It’s phenomenal number for a nose tackle. We double the double numbers here (22, 33, 44, etc.).

Kennard will look odd with No. 54 as it’s linked to someone like Brian Urlacher who was a behemoth of a player so here’s to hoping the rookie will grow in it.

So what do you all think of the numbers? What are your favorites? Let us know all of your thoughts below!

Chargers use UFA tender on RB J.K. Dobbins

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Las Vegas Raiders

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The Chargers used the rare UFA tender on RB J.K. Dobbins

The Chargers joined the Browns (WR Elijah Moore) this week by placing the seldomly-used unrestricted free agent tag on running back J.K. Dobbins. The tender gives the Chargers exclusive negotiating right if he remains unsigned by the start of this year’s training camp.

Utilizing the UFA tender also leaves the Chargers eligible to receive a compensatory pick should he go ahead and sign with a team before camp. Under the tenure, should Dobbins play under it in 2025 with the Bolts, he’ll earn $3.428 million which is a small bump from his salary this past season.

Before the Chargers and Browns this year, the Chiefs were the last team to use the UFA tender on a player as they used it on both Melvin Ingram and Justin Houston.

The #Chargers have applied the rare unrestricted free agent tender to RB J.K. Dobbins, giving them exclusive negotiating rights if he remains unsigned by training camp. If he plays under the tender, he would earn $3.428M.

On a cheap one-year deal in 2024, Dobbins bounced back from an injury-riddled tenure with the Ravens to record career highs in both rushing yards (905) and touchdowns (nine) in his first season with the Bolts. Should he return to the Chargers, he’d be a part of a three-headed monster in the backfield alongside Najee Harris and rookie Omarion Hampton.

However, that seems awfully unlikely at this point in time.

Chargers land 2 players named as potential ‘sleepers’ prior to 2025 NFL Draft

NCAA Football: South Carolina at Vanderbilt

Steve Roberts-Imagn Images

Both 5th-round pick Oronde Gadsden II and UDFA Raheim Sanders were both tabbed as “sleepers” by anonymous college football coaches ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Back on April 14, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg published an article where he spoke with a number of anonymous college football coaches to get their opinions on players in the draft class they believe could be “sleepers” when it’s all said and done.

Of the 29 players highlighted, the Chargers ended up drafting or signing two of the players. They were tight end Oronde Gadsden II, whom they selected in the fifth round, and undrafted free agent running back Raheim “Rocket” Sanders.

Oronde Gadsden II

The Chargers traded back into the fifth round in order to land Gadsden who was essentially the last tight end in that Tier 1.5-2 range before the talent really fell off of a cliff. He’s a 6’5 seam-stretcher who ran his 40 in 4.59 seconds during Syracuse’s pro day. He possesses a massive catch radius and posted two seasons of 900+ receiving yards (2022, 2024) while with the Orange.

“I thought he was a really talented guy,” an ACC coach said. “Would be a good addition.”

Gadsden will now help round out a room that features incumbent starter Will Dissly and free-agent signing Tyler Conklin. Dissly will be the team’s primary run blocker, Conklin is expected to be a short to intermediate possession target, and Gadsden’s initial role will likely involve being flexed into the slot as a vertical and red zone threat.

Knowing how Greg Roman used the Ravens’ tight ends during his tenure there, you’ll likely see plenty of all three at times throughout the 2025 season. I expect this group to be Justin Herbert’s best friend in the year to come.

Raheim “Rocket” Sanders

Despite being viewed as a fifth or sixth-round pick by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein ahead of the draft, Sanders went undrafted despite being a 3,000-yard rusher in the SEC by the end of his collegiate career. He ended up landing with the Chargers and, despite them having just taken Omarion Hampton in the first round, it may be one of the best places he could have asked to sign.

The Chargers are going to run the heck out of the ball. Hassan Haskins is likely going to be the team’s third back thanks to his special teams value but Sanders could truly push second-year back Kimaini Vidal for a spot either as the team’s fourth running back or on their practice squad.

“I still felt like he was still nursing the injury a touch from Arkansas,” an SEC defensive coordinator said, “but down the stretch he was killing it when they started rolling a little bit more on offense and he was playing well.”

Sanders posted an elite relative athletic score (RAS) after running a 4.47 in the 40 at 6’0 and 217 pounds. The kid has some juice and I believe his one-cut style of running will aid him in the Chargers offense.

If he makes the team, he likely won’t see any time on the field unless injuries occur ahead of him. Regardless, he’s an excellent stash for a team with the identity the Chargers are attempting to cement.

Chargers decline 5th-year option for OG Zion Johnson

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have reportedly declined to pick up the 5th-year option of OG Zion Johnson, the team’s first-round pick in 2021.

Thursday held the deadline for NFL teams to either pick up or decline the fifth-year options for their first-round selections from the 2022 NFL Draft. When it came to the Chargers, reports came out Thursday evening that the team will not be picking up the fifth-year option on offensive guard Zion Johnson.

#Chargers did not exercise OL Zion Johnson's fifth-year option, per source.

— Daniel Popper (@danielrpopper) May 2, 2025

Johnson was selected 17th overall in that draft out of Boston College. He played for the Golden Eagles from 2019-2021 following his first two collegiate seasons with the Davidson Wildcats, an FCS program in the Pioneer Football League.

After being named a First-Team All-American in 2021, the Bolts selected Johnson — viewed as one of the safest offensive line prospects in the draft class — to further build the wall in front of Justin Herbert. He has since gone on to start 49 games across both guard spots. In 2024, Johnson had his best season per Pro Football Focus with a season grade of 64.4. However, that’s still a fairly average grade overall and his most recent performance in the wild card loss to the Texans continues to linger in the minds of fans.

In that game, Johnson let up two sacks — the second such game of the season — as he ended with a pass block efficiency grade of 91.6, the second-worst of any game all year. Johnson, along with the rest of the interior blockers, could not handle the stunts and games run by Houston’s pass rush and it ultimately led to a four-pick game from Herbert who was forced into playing hero ball fairly early.

This offseason, the Chargers signed former Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton to start at the same position. They also signed former Raiders center Andre James who will compete with Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, Trey Pipkins, and Jamaree Salyer for one of the two open spots at either center or left guard. In the draft, the Chargers picked Pitt’s Branson Taylor, a 6’6 left tackle who has already been tabbed as a guard for LA.

It’s going to be a real slugfest to figure out which two come out of that group a starters, and if one does end up being Johnson, maybe there is a chance he sticks around, albeit on a much cheaper deal than what his fifth-year option was set to pay him.
