3 Chargers UDFAs with the best chance of surviving final cuts

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 07 South Carolina at Kentucky

Photo by Jeff Moreland/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

UDFA running back Raheim Sanders may have the best chance of making the Chargers final roster after a productive career in the SEC.

It’s always fun to root for the underdog. Finding something to love about little-known undrafted free agents after they sign with your favorite NFL team is almost a rite of passage for any serious football fan and that habit doesn’t often change no matter how many years have come and gone.

This year, the Chargers signed a handful of intriguing players in their initial 18-man UDFA haul. Below, I touch on three of them that I believe have the best shot at surviving the team’s final cuts later this summer.

Raheim Sanders, RB, South Carolina

You’re probably going to hear a lot about Sanders from now until he’s either released or kept through the team’s final cuts later this summer. As a three-year starter in the SEC, Sanders rushed for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns while having a chunk of his 2023 season taken from him due to injury. Now, he’s set to join a Chargers running back room that’s headlined by the ever-durable Najee Harris and 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton.

On the face of it, the chances don’t seem great for Sanders to make an impact anytime soon, even if he does make the initial cut. However, if 2024 sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal does not improve enough as a pass blocker, his roster spot could be in jeopardy. Veteran Hassan Haskins should be viewed as a lock to remain with the Chargers thanks to his special teams ability but Sanders’ best chance to make the team would be as a high-upside stash that overall helps raise the floor for a run-heavy offense that was littered with injuries a year ago.

The Chargers should aim for the strongest and most talented running back room possible and Sanders seems like he may have a chance to impress this offseason, especially with the Chargers playing four preseason games in total thanks to the Hall of Fame Game against the Lions.

Jordan Oladokun, CB, Bowling Green

When you look at Oladokun’s stats from the 2024 season, it’s sort’ve crazy to think he wound up going undrafted. When a player picks off five passes in a single season, it’s usually one of the best marks of the year by any player and that was the case as his pick total tied for fourth in the country. His 136 return yards were also up and it doesn’t hurt that he also returned one of those interceptions for a touchdown.

Following the regular season, Oladokun had held opposing quarterback’s to a nation-low 18.4 passer rating allowed among draft eligible cornerbacks with at least 300 coverage snaps. That was better than first-round picks Jahdae Barron (33.1) and Travis Hunter (38.8).

Oladokun’s 6’0, 190-pound frame does not jump out at you by any means, but he plays bigger than his frame and offers a high football IQ that helps him overcome any shortcomings. In an ever-competitive cornerback room, the Chargers may have found themselves yet another player who could end up playing above his contract in 2025.

Nash Jones, OG, Texas State

You got to love a big guy who can score a Thicc-Six.

NASH JONES ON THE WAY TO BIG MAN TD FOR TEXAS STATE pic.twitter.com/Asc5yFV980

— Sickos Committee (@SickosCommittee) December 27, 2023

Jones stands at an intimidating 6’5 and 320 pounds and posted an elite relative athletic score this pre-draft season which was highlighted by a 30” vertical and a 9’5 broad jump. His 29 reps in the bench press weren’t too bad, either.

Overall, Jones is well-built for the NFL and has some natural athleticism traits that come from his background as an offensive tackle early in his collegiate career. He put a lot of good effort on tape and shows off a mentality of someone who wants to dominate the man across from him. He’ll need to polish some of the fundamentals (strike points in pass pro, footwork for better sustain) but there’s most definitely something here that stands out to me over the other lineman in this UDFA haul.

With the Chargers feasibly putting everything out there as an option to solve their center and left guard problems, I like Jones as practice squad stash who could develop into decent depth in the years to come.

Nash Jones is a OG prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 8.78 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 212 out of 1730 OG from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/dyJZ7ZKnOb pic.twitter.com/y2hvGc2Y4l

Chargers sign 7 2025 draft picks, 18 undrafted free agents

Illinois v Oregon

Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image Of Sport/Getty Images

The Chargers have signed seven of their nine 2025 draft picks, including defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell and edge rusher Kyle Kennard.

On Friday afternoon, just about two weeks since the end of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Chargers have announced the signing of seven of their nine draft picks. They were defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell (third-rounder), edge rusher Kyle Kennard (fourth), wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith (fifth), tight end Oronde Gadsden II (fifth), offensive lineman Branson Taylor (sixth), safety R.J. Mickens (sixth), and cornerback Trikweze Bridges (seventh).

So heading into the weekend, the lone players left to sign their rookie contracts with the Chargers are first-round running back Omarion Hampton and second-round wide receiver Tre Harris. Normally higher draft picks take a bit longer to sign their first contracts than lower ones and that seems to be the case here with the Bolts.

Omarion Hampton, Tre Harris invited to 2025 NFL Rookie Premiere

North Carolina v Florida State

Photo by Don Juan Moore/Getty Images

Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris are the lone Chargers invited to attend the annual NFL Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles next week.

Every year, dozens of the league’s brightest incoming players get together in Los Angeles for the NFL Rookie Premiere hosted by Panini America. This year’s event will take place next week from May 14-17 with 42 players currently set to attend.

The NFLPA calls the rookie premiere the “first major business immersion” as the players in attendance will be tasked with taking numerous photos and signing autographs, including thousands of cards featuring their faces.

Per the NFLPA, players are selected to attend based on factors such as “college performance, draft status, position, and marketability, all of which influence their early value in trading cards and brand deals.”

With that criteria in mind, it should come as no surprise that Chargers first and second-round picks Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris are the two Bolts invited to attend. The rookie premiere usually leans towards offensive players — mainly those who play skill positions — which is why you can recall 2024 No. 5 pick Joe Alt not being a part of the event a year ago.

Hampton was a two-time 1,500-yard rusher before being drafted by the Bolts while Harris was one of the best receivers in the SEC prior to his injuries in 2024. They’re both going to help push football card sales towards the Chargers fan base and that’s exactly what Panini America is banking on.

A year ago, 2024 draft picks Ladd McConkey and Brenden Rice were both invited to the event. McConkey went on to set several records for a Chargers rookie wideout while Rice was a mainstay on the practice squad for the entire year.

Chargers sign WR Dalevon Campbell

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl - South Carolina vs Illinois

Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

After hosting the team’s rookie mini camp over the weekend, the Chargers are signing an athletic receiver from South Carolina.

On Monday afternoon, the Chargers announced the signing of former South Carolina wide receiver Dalevon Campbell following a tryout during the team’s rookie mini camp. In a corresponding move, the team is waiving offensive lineman Bucky Williams.

Campbell played six collegiate seasons between three different programs. After starting at the University of Illinois (2019-2021), he spent two seasons at Nevada (2022-2023) before finishing his career with the Gamecocks.

The 6’4, 205-pound Campbell was named a Honorable Mention All-Mountain West selection following the 2023 season where he hauled in 31 passes for 594 yards and two touchdowns. This past season with South Carolina, Campbell averaged a robust 26 yards per reception on 12 receptions which he turned into 312 yards.

During his five-year career, Campbell finished with totals of 87 receptions for 1,463 yards and three touchdowns.

Campbell reportedly runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.3s which does match up with the highlights on his film. If Gamecocks LaNorris Sellers was able to hit him in stride a few more times, his touchdown would have been much higher, as well.

With his intangibles, it’s easy to see why the Chargers would take a chance on Campbell. After all, the whole point of changing up the way the team has done rookie mini camp was so Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz could better find those “gems” and it looks like the staff may have found their first.

Chargers top NFL in most miles traveled during 2025 regular season

Los Angeles Chargers OTA Offseason Workout

When all is said in done after the end of the 2025 regular season, the Chargers will have traveled the most miles of any team in the league.

Without knowing when the Chargers will play each weekend, we do already know where. The same goes for every other team, of course, so the NFL went ahead and racked up the miles that each of the 32 teams will travel over the upcoming regular season.

When it was all said and done, the Bolts were the lone team at the top, predicted to travel 37,086 miles over the course of its 17-game schedule. That total is 2,254 miles more than the cross-town Rams who are second in travel distance with 34,832.

Thirty-two NFL teams will travel 625,947 miles this season. Here is the breakdown, via @billsperos: pic.twitter.com/WJ2sU5hrVG

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 13, 2025

One of the most eye-opening observations from the graph above here is that the Cincinnati Bengals will only travel 8,753 miles all season long. They’re the only team expected to travel less than 10,000 miles and it’s nearly 2,000 miles less than the Bills who sit above them at 10,546.

As for the rest of the AFC West, the Broncos and Chiefs rank ninth and 10th in miles expected to be traveled at 23,267 and 21,695, respectively. The Raiders fare a bit better than everyone else, ranking 18th at 18,055.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles lucked out as well, coming in 22nd with 15,924 miles expected to be traveled during the regular season.

Chargers Schedule Analysis: No cakewalks for Bolts in Year 2 of Jim Harbaugh

Los Angeles Chargers Rookie Minicamp

The Chargers go from one of the easiest schedules in the NFL to one of the hardest in 2025.

The Chargers, along with the rest of the NFL, announced their 2025 regular season schedule on Wednesday night.

Here are my thoughts on the slate:

Three consecutive AFC West opponents to begin the season? Woof

The Chargers have absolutely zero time to get comfortable in the regular before they get hit with a slew of high-stakes games as they begin the year with three consecutive games against AFC West opponents.

First, the team travels to Brazil to “host” the Chiefs in what should be a heck of a matchup to kickoff the new season. That leads into a road game against Pete Carroll and the Raiders before they return for the home opener in SoFi Stadium against the Broncos.

Beginning the year with a stretch like this isn’t just a weird coincidence, it’s honestly a brutal draw. The Chargers are the ONLY team to face three divisional opponents in their first three weeks. Yes, that’s right. No other team this year will see a similar start to the year. Some teams start with two consecutive or play two of their first three in the division, but the Chargers are the only team who will be done with half of their divisional games before the start of Week Four.

Seeing as the AFC West looks to be one of the best divisions in football yet again, this start could have a massive impact on the team and their outlook on the season depending on how it goes. And let me be clear: I would not be surprised at any of the potential outcomes here. If the team lucks out and goes 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, or even 0-3 to begin the year, none of those would shock me. That’s how much I respect the division this year.

The Chargers don’t really have a “soft” stretch on the schedule this year

When I consider what a “stretch” is on an NFL schedule — whether an easy or difficult one — I usually deem it to be at least three games in length. When I look at the Chargers schedule, I don’t see any three-game stretch that consists of “gimmes.”

In all honesty, there’s barely a two-game span involving teams the Chargers should beat and thats when they face the Dolphins and Colts. And yes, the Dolphins aren’t exactly a pushover due to having some insane players like Tyreek Hill, but I’m not buying the hype back on them just yet with them losing Terron Armstead to retirement following a down year for them as a whole on offense.

The Colts don’t know who will start at quarterback and there isn’t a real name on their roster that would inspire me too much if I were a fan. Anthony Richardson is hurt and tired (yes, seriously) too often and Daniel Jones is still Daniel Jones.

The post-bye week stretch is an absolute gauntlet

A lot of teams who end up making the playoffs are the ones who manage to hit their stride through the second half of the schedule and win the games they must to sneak into one of the final three seeds of their conference or win their division by a slim margin. I’m not confident to say the Chargers are where they need to be to take the AFC West crown so they’re in a chronic state of having to win enough games to be a wild card.

After a Week 12 bye, the Chargers will face the Raiders at home, followed by Monday Night Football at SoFi with the Eagles, a road trip to the Chiefs, and games against the Cowboys (away), Texans (home), and Broncos (away). Four of those games come against playoff teams from a year ago and half of them are divisional games. This six-game stretch is, without a doubt, going to decide the Chargers postseason hopes. I can feel it in my bones already this far out.

Through the first 11 games, the only games I could say are “should-wins” are Raiders x2, Giants, Colts, Titans, and Jaguars. That’s a floor of 6-5 if they, at the minimum, win against those teams only before the bye. When I look at the final six games, I see 3-3 or 2-4 if they drop the second game against Denver. A 9-8 season would be a letdown and an 8-9 record would have the fan base in shambles.

I know the fan base is not used to the idea of the Chargers playing above their talent for more than a single year at a time, but Harbaugh, Greg Roman, and Jesse Minter will have to keep this train humming in year two if they don’t wish to have a wash of a season when expectations are as high as they’ve ever been for this team since the start of the decade.

Chargers land brother of 2025 UDFA in early 2026 mock draft

The older brother of Oregon star Matayo Uiagalelei is currently a UDFA with the Chargers.

Could the Chargers reunite a pair of brothers a year from now?

In a way-too-early 2026 NFL mock draft, Sports Illustrated’s Richie Bradshaw believes the Bolts will end up grabbing one of the class’ top edge rushers, and he also happens to have a brother who just signed with the Chargers as part of their 2025 UDFA class.

With the 19th pick (meaning the Bolts are believed to be a playoff team next season), Bradshaw has the Chargers selecting Oregon pass rusher Matayo Uiagalelei, the brother of former Clemson and Florida State quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei.

D.J. is already a hoss of a quarterback at 6’5 and 250 pounds, but his brother is even larger at 6’6 and over 270 pounds.

Matayo was a five-star prospect coming out of high school by 247Sports as the No. 19 player in the country. ESPN also had him as a four-star, the No. 65 player in his class, and a top-10 pass rusher.

As a freshman, Uiagalelei played in 13 of the Ducks’ 14 games with no starts. He managed a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss while playing in a rotational role. In 2024, Matayo broke out in his first year as a starter with 13 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. For his efforts, he was named First-Team All-Big Ten by the media and a second-team member by conference coaches.

With 2025 potentially Khalil Mack’s last season with the Chargers (or even his last before retirement), the Bolts need to find a way to keep their pass rush humming for the foreseeable future. The selection of South Carolina’s Kyle Kennard in the fourth round this past April will help, but I expect he’ll need at least a year or so to get fully acclimated to the pros while continuing to build his body for a potential three-down role.

If Uiagalelei continues to produce and take his game up another notch as a true junior — he’s also going to be just 20 next season — then I don’t see why he couldn’t solidify his positioning as a future first-round pick.

Predicting the Chargers 2025 record: Can Bolts gain ground on again Chiefs?

Chargers Social Media

Carlin Stiehl / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

The Chargers will have a much tougher schedule in 2025. Does that mean they could fall short of expectations?

The Chargers go from having one of the easiest schedules during the 2024 campaign to having one of the tougher slates in the league this upcoming campaign. They’re the only team in the league to begin the year with three consecutive divisional matchups and have one of the more difficult finishes to the season, facing four playoff games — as well as their other three AFC West matchups — within their final six games.

There is still plenty of time until the season arrives, meaning there’s a lot of time for things to continue changing with the Chargers (and around the NFL for that matter) but here’s our first take at predicting the team’s win-loss record based on the current moment.

Week One: Vs. Kansas City Chiefs in Sao Paulo, Brazil - L

I’ve taken this stance with the Chargers playing the Chiefs for several years now. Until the Chargers start, at minimum, splitting the series year after year, I can’t ever feel confident picking them to beat the Chiefs. Time and time again, they fail to make the necessary plays in the most critical moments to seize the game for themselves. Too often they allow Kansas City to end the game with the ball in their hands and until they can flip that script, this will continue to be a lopsided “rivalry.”

Week Two: @ Las Vegas Raiders - W

The Raiders added elite running back prospect Ashton Jeanty to their backfield and traded for a high-floor starting quarterback in veteran Geno Smith. That immediately makes this team much more competitive than they’ve been in recent years. Add in that All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers will likely be just as productive and you’ve got a real darkhorse in the AFC West. However, as good as the offense could be this year, the defense is still at a much worse place compared to the units for the Chiefs, Chargers, and Broncos.

I have the Raiders continuing to be in the basement of the division in 2025 until they can fix the other side of the ball.

Week Three: Vs. Denver Broncos - L

I do not think the Chargers improve enough along the interior of both the offensive and defensive lines. Mekhi Becton was a great addition at right guard, but leaving the other two spots up for grabs — potentially by the incumbent starters from a year ago — is not how I would have handled the group this offseason. As for the other side of the ball, the Chargers opted to try and replace defensive tackle Poona Ford by signing two cheap deals in Naquan Jones and Da’Shawn Hand. They also drafted nose tackle Jamaree Caldwell in the third round.

Will all of these moves be enough to compete against other squads with strong trench play? I’m just not certain of that right now. I think the group gets bullied a bit here by the Denver defense and they lose a close one at home.

Week Four: @ New York Giants - W

The Giants added a rookie quarterback in Jaxson Dart to grow with veteran additions Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. They have budding star wideout Malik Nabers returning for year two and added Abdul Carter to a defense that already featured a strong pass rush.

I like the Giants to be better in 2025, but not good enough to compete here with the Chargers.

Week Five: Vs. Washington Commanders - L

Scrambling quarterbacks were an issue for the Chargers in 2024 and it remains to be seen if they will be better in that facet this season. Jayden Daniels was a menace to opposing defense, finishing second to Lamar Jackson in rushing yards by a quarterback with 891. The Commanders offense also added former 49ers standout Deebo Samuel at receiver to pair with Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin.

This should be a very fun game to watch, but I can’t help but feel like Daniels will simply make one or two back-breaking plays with his legs to help pull his team over the Chargers.

Week Six: @ Miami Dolphins - W

The Dolphins were an offensive masterclass just two years ago but were just a shell of themselves in 2024 thanks to more injuries to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Even if Tua is healthy this year, I’m not buying the hype that they’ll be right back to who they were, especially after losing veteran left tackle Terron Armstead to retirement.

Week Seven: Vs. Indianapolis Colts - W

The Colts don’t know who their starting quarterback will be in 2025 and none of the names that are currently in the running lead me to believe they’ll be all that competitive this year. I think this is the closest thing to one of the Chargers’ “gimmes” this year.

Week Eight: Vs. Minnesota Vikings - L

This team won 14 games a year ago with a balanced offense and a very aggressive defense. I don’t have good thoughts about their new-and-improved defensive front going up against the Chargers interior offensive line. I think it’ll be a competitive game, but ultimately I see the likes of Justin Jefferson being the difference in this one, as long as quarterback J.J. McCarthy is everything the team hoped he’d be. The Vikings are a very well-built team, something that I think the Chargers COULD be, but not until next the 2026 season at the earliest.

Week Nine: @ Tennessee Titans - W

The Chargers get to face 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward in this one after he’s had the chance to play half a season of NFL football. The Titans don’t have an inspiring offensive unit around him, but their offensive line looks solid and the defense had an underrated year in 2024. I think game is closer than most would think, but the Chargers ultimately pull it out in a game I don’t think they can afford to drop with this schedule.

Week 10: Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - W

At this point, I think it’s safe to assume if Aaron Rodgers will play anywhere in 2025, it’ll be with the Steelers. With that in mind, I actually don’t think Rodgers will be any better for the team than Wilson/Fields was. He didn’t shine with a strong supporting cast with the Jets and I’d argue the Steelers are worse at WR/RB entering this year, even with the addition of D.K. Metcalf (balanced by the trading away of George Pickens).

I think the Chargers get some revenge from their loss in 2024 thanks to a stronger run game and (hopefully) a completely healthy Justin Herbert.

Week 11: @ Jacksonville Jaguars - W

The Jaguars were not a good team last season aside from some obvious budding star power from receiver Brian Thomas Jr. The team added Heisman winner Travis Hunter who will look to play on both sides of the ball. Will his presence be enough to make the Jaguars competitive in the AFC once again?

The defense will be fast and athletic once again. The offense only gained Hunter, and it remains to be seen if he will lean more into catching passes or catching picks. Either way, I don’t see how this team moved their needle in the right direction all that much.

Week 12: Bye

Finally, after two early byes in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the Chargers finally land a late bye week to help them rest and rehabilitate before the toughest part of their schedule.

Week 13: Vs. Las Vegas Raiders - W

The Chargers have the expectation to be better in 2025 than they were in 2024. If they beat the Raiders twice last year, they must beat them twice once again. Just a the Raiders got better this offseason, so did the Chargers. Continuing to keep little brother as little brother is the goal here.

Week 14: Vs. Philadelphia Eagles - L

Just like the Vikings matchup, I think the Eagles are one of the best built teams in all of football, and honestly it may just be THE best roster in the NFL. After the way they handled the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, I don’t see how they don’t do something similar to the Chargers, especially with the likes of Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis rushing against this iOL.

Week 15: @ Kansas City Chiefs - L

Same as before, the Chiefs own the Chargers until they prove otherwise.

Week 16: @ Dallas Cowboys - W

The Cowboys added former Steelers wideout George Pickens this offseason to pair with stud CeeDee Lamb. However, Dallas can’t just throw it all game long and they will have to get something out of their run game if they hope to be as good as their fans want them to be. I think the Chargers secondary does just enough, paired with a strong effort from the pass rush, to keep Dak Prescott from winning this one with his arm.

Week 17: Vs. Houston Texans - L

The Texans have only gotten better since the wild card game in January. The Chargers, on the other hand, did not necessarily fix the gaping issue that caused them to lose that game in such a frustrating fashion. Unless the interior protection for Justin Herbert balls out for most of the season up to this point, I don’t see how it does not play another large role in this matchup.

Week 18: @ Denver Broncos - W

I cannot imagine the Chargers dropping the season series against the Broncos so they end the year by getting payback for their Week Three loss. With some of the new pieces on the team, that early divisional gauntlet could come with some bumps if the team is not able to gel together fast enough. By the final week of the regular season, I would expect no such hiccups. The team comes to play their best ball of the year in a trouncing of their AFC West rival.

Final Record: 10-7

The Chargers have higher expectations which may mean that any less than 11 wins could be seen as a step back. But after analyzing this schedule, I think the fan base should be over the moon if they can get to double-digit victories in consecutive seasons. A host of 2024 playoff teams and an improved AFC West around them could end up giving them more than they can handle, but that’s life in the NFL for teams hoping to earn the moniker of “contender.”

I can’t say I feel super confident in this prediction, however. The Athletic’s Daniel Popper predicted the team to go 9-8 this season and I could very well see that happening, as well. All that takes is for them to suffer a close loss to a divisional foe or have a head-scratching performance against a lesser opponent. They did the latter when they dropped one to the Cardinals on the road a season ago.

So what do you all think? Am I right on the money? Did I fall a game or two off in one direction or the other? Let me know what you all think in the comments below!
