With Foster Sarell signing with the Commanders this week, it only makes sense for Trey Pipkins to remain with the Chargers as their swing tackle.
On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders announced the signing of former Chargers offensive tackle Foster Sarell. The former Ravens UDFA signed with the Bolts in October of the 2021 season and has mainly resided as the swing tackle in Los Angeles.
With Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz continuing to reshape the offensive line entering year two of their regime, it looks like they’re not just happy upgrading the starters. Choosing not to re-sign Sarell — who has multiple years of experience with the team — shows us they have another plan for the spot.
What is that plan, though? As things stand, former starting tackle and 2024 starting right guard Trey Pipkins seems to be the new swing tackle following the signing of former Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton. Knowing that Becton will replace Pipkins, one could have expected the Chargers to release the latter soon after the deal was reported on. After all, Pipkins is set to make legitimate starter money ($7.25 million) in 2025 and why would the Chargers want to spend that kind of cash on a non-starter?
Well, if the offensive line is as much of a priority as Harbaugh has built it up to be, then I can understand why he’d be content with paying that type of money to the team’s swing tackle. Because, after all, who are they reasonably going to replace him with? They wouldn’t likely draft another tackle all that early and why not keep an experienced veteran around a little longer than hoping a first-year, late-round rookie would make the same impact?
As things stand, Pipkins’ APY in 2025 is good for 39th among all offensive tackles. That’s currently greater than Rashawn Slater’s APY at $4.157 million which ranks 51st among tackles. Of course Slater is expected to sign a new, massive extension at some point this offseason, but for now, it’s wild to see him making so much less than both Pipkins and Alt ($8.29 million). So in the end, it sure looks like Pipkins will remain with the Chargers as their new swing tackle barring a sudden change in plans.
How do you all feel about this potential outcome? Yay or nay keeping Pipkins as he team’s swing tackle? If you prefer moving on from him to save some cap space, how would you go about finding another swing tackle? Let us know in the comments below!
