News Chargers Team Notes

Trey Pipkins likely to stay with Chargers following Commanders signing Foster Sarell

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Los Angeles Chargers

With Foster Sarell signing with the Commanders this week, it only makes sense for Trey Pipkins to remain with the Chargers as their swing tackle.

On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders announced the signing of former Chargers offensive tackle Foster Sarell. The former Ravens UDFA signed with the Bolts in October of the 2021 season and has mainly resided as the swing tackle in Los Angeles.

With Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz continuing to reshape the offensive line entering year two of their regime, it looks like they’re not just happy upgrading the starters. Choosing not to re-sign Sarell — who has multiple years of experience with the team — shows us they have another plan for the spot.

What is that plan, though? As things stand, former starting tackle and 2024 starting right guard Trey Pipkins seems to be the new swing tackle following the signing of former Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton. Knowing that Becton will replace Pipkins, one could have expected the Chargers to release the latter soon after the deal was reported on. After all, Pipkins is set to make legitimate starter money ($7.25 million) in 2025 and why would the Chargers want to spend that kind of cash on a non-starter?

Well, if the offensive line is as much of a priority as Harbaugh has built it up to be, then I can understand why he’d be content with paying that type of money to the team’s swing tackle. Because, after all, who are they reasonably going to replace him with? They wouldn’t likely draft another tackle all that early and why not keep an experienced veteran around a little longer than hoping a first-year, late-round rookie would make the same impact?

As things stand, Pipkins’ APY in 2025 is good for 39th among all offensive tackles. That’s currently greater than Rashawn Slater’s APY at $4.157 million which ranks 51st among tackles. Of course Slater is expected to sign a new, massive extension at some point this offseason, but for now, it’s wild to see him making so much less than both Pipkins and Alt ($8.29 million). So in the end, it sure looks like Pipkins will remain with the Chargers as their new swing tackle barring a sudden change in plans.

How do you all feel about this potential outcome? Yay or nay keeping Pipkins as he team’s swing tackle? If you prefer moving on from him to save some cap space, how would you go about finding another swing tackle? Let us know in the comments below!

Chargers ranked 7th in AFC, behind Broncos and Bengals, following first wave of free agency

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

The Chargers have failed to gain much ground in the AFC following the first wave of free agency.

The Chargers entered this year’s free agency period with one of the largest pools of available cap space in the NFL. That set the potential scene for them to spend, spend, spend in hopes of maximizing their win-now window with quarterback Justin Herbert. However, none of the Chargers’ contracts — whose formal 2025 cap hits we know of thus far — have been confirmed over $6 million.

We currently are still waiting on Mekhi Becton, Andre James, Teair Tart, Naquan Jones, Taylor Heinicke, and Da’Shawn Hand’s final numbers, but only Becton’s should end up over $6 million. The Chargers have been making calculated moves in an effort to maximize their compensatory picks in the coming years. By refusing to sign players to larger contracts, Joe Hortiz is setting up that formula to work in the Chargers’ favor for years to come.

But just how much better, if at all, have the Chargers gotten through all of their moves? Have they been able to keep up with the rest of the AFC teams who are also chasing the likes of the Chiefs, Bills, and Ravens?

According to CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani, the Chargers have actually been pretty stagnant, if not fallen behind a bit. In his recent rankings of the 16 AFC teams, the Bolts came in at No. 7, behind the Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, Broncos, Bengals, and Texans.

Here’s what Dajani had to say about the Chargers’ placement:

“Re-signing Khalil Mack was important, and signing former Steelers running back Najee Harris intrigues me. However, losing Ford and Bosa makes you a worse team. L.A. can still be a playoff squad, but it won’t go very far without a physical outside wide receiver. Ladd McConkey can’t do everything by himself, and I wonder how effective Mike Williams will be in his return to the Chargers.”

I hate to admit it, but I do sort’ve agree here that the Chargers haven’t made all that much progress in gaining ground on the AFC’s elite. Losing Poona Ford hurts. Joey Bosa on the other hand? He had his worst year as a pro while playing double-digit games in 2024 and I’m not sold the team moving on from him really hurts that much, especially when he’s barely played in the past three seasons.

But it’s not so much the players that have moved on that hurt the team’s 2025 outlook the most, it’s essentially the lack of impact signings. In the name of compensatory picks, the Chargers are hoping for numerous players to outplay their contracts and essentially have career years, on top of hitting on a handful of draft picks to be starters and/or role players in 2025. It’s not very likely everything they need to work out does, but the Chargers are sticking to a plan and you have to respect it.

Only time will tell how it all pans out, but as of now, it’s tough to see the Chargers improving on their 11-win season this year, especially given the more difficult schedule.

But what do you all think? Are the Chargers really the seventh-best team in the AFC as of this moment? Should they be given more respect than Dajani is showing? Let us know in the comments below!

Chargers hosting former Jets TE Tyler Conklin

Los Angeles Rams v New York Jets

Tyler Conklin has spent the last 3 seasons with the Jets, totaling 1,622 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns.

On Thursday evening, NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that the Chargers are hosting former Vikings and Jets tight end Tyler Conklin. The former fifth-round pick out of Central Michigan has been the starter in New York for the past three seasons, totaling 1,622 receiving yards and seven touchdown since signing with the team in 2022.

The #Chargers are hosting veteran TE Tyler Conklin on a visit, sources say. A bit of a surprise he’s still available, especially since a few teams have shown interest in signing him, including the Jets, with whom he had 170 catches for 1,622 yards and 7 TDs the last three years. pic.twitter.com/7uxiYuPvjU

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 20, 2025

Originally drafted by the Vikings, Conklin was seldomly-used during his three seasons in Minnesota as he recorded just 43 receptions for 329 yards and a single touchdown. In 2021 — his final year with the Vikings — Conklin broke out with 61 receptions for 593 yards and three touchdowns while starting 15 of 17 games.

This past season while catching passes from Aaron Rodgers, Conklin hauled in a career-high four touchdowns to go with 449 yards on 51 receptions while starting 15 games.

Should the Chargers end up signing Conklin, their tight room would receive a much-needed injection of talent as the room currently holds only 2024 starter Will Dissly with former UDFAs Tucker Fisk and McCallan Castles behind him.

Tyler Conklin's catching has been outstanding. Snatching everything thrown his way.

- Caught 20 of 27 targets (74%)

- 0 drops (4th-most receptions without a drop among TE)

- Caught 4 of 5 contested targets (80%)

Chargers signing TE Tyler Conklin to 1-year deal

New York Jets v Pittsburgh Steelers

The Chargers are adding TE Tyler Conklin to pair with 2024 starter Will Dissly.

The Chargers are signing former Vikings and Jets tight end Tyler Conklin to a one-year deal. The news was first broke by his agent Mike McCartney.

The #Chargers add Tyler Conklin. https://t.co/RgQPDvDEOM

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 21, 2025

Conklin is a former fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings back in 2018. He played collegiately at Central Michigan where was named Third-Team All-MAC as a senior. He ended his college career with 83 catches for 1,159 yards and 11 touchdowns.

After being buried on the depth chart through his first three seasons with the Vikings, Conklin broke out during the 2021 season with 61 receptions for 593 yards and three touchdowns while starting 15-of-17 games. Prior to the 2022 season, Conklin signed with the New York Jets where he’s started 47 games over the past three seasons. In 2023, Conklin recorded a career-high 621 receiving yards on 61 receptions. This past season while catching passes from Aaron Rodgers, Conklin caught a career-high four touchdowns to go with 449 yards on 51 catches.

Conklin now joins a tight end room that features incumbent starter Will Dissly and former undrafted free agents Tucker Fisk and McCallan Castles. Once again, the Chargers have two tight ends with starting experience to lean on offensively. Dissly is seemingly once again going to be the run-blocking specialist while Conklin is more of a down-field threat, similar to what the team was hoping to get from Hayden Hurst this past season.

2 low-cost free agents the Chargers should consider signing

Seattle Seahawks v Los Angeles Rams

Both Tyler Lockett and Calais Campbell would provide veteran mentorship in two young position groups for the Chargers.

The Chargers are hard at work trying to put the finishing touches on their team to set them up for the best draft possible next month. They have 10 picks in all which is plenty of ammo to make moves throughout that weekend and/or potentially make a trade for someone currently on another roster.

If the Chargers are still looking to add available free agents, there are currently two on the market I think would be low-cost additions that would do nothing but raise the floor without forcing the Chargers into a pre-designed path through the draft and the rest of the offseason.

Let’s check them out.

WR Tyler Lockett

The Seahawks moved on from Lockett after 10 seasons (as well as D.K. Metcalf), paving the way for budding star Jaxon Smith-Njigba to lead their receiver room into the Mike Macdonald era.

In his final year with Seattle, Lockett recorded 49 receptions for 600 yards and a pair of touchdowns while operating as the team’s WR3 for the majority of the year. Even at 32 years old, Lockett is a smart and savvy football player who still knows how to be available for his quarterback.

The Chargers added Mike Williams to fill their need for an X receiver. They’ve not got a decent trio for 3WR sets. Beyond that? I’m not a fan of the depth behind any of them. One injury happens and all of a sudden Derius Davis and Jalen Reagor are playing more snaps than they probably should on offense.

At this stage of his career, Lockett likely wouldn’t cost a whole lot and I believe his final cap hit would be under the $6 million the Chargers seem to be aiming for. Signing Lockett to a one-year deal would also further allow the Chargers to let the draft board come to them as opposed to going after presumed needs, like a new young wideout to fuel that position for the long-term.

Lockett only needs to be a reliable role player in Greg Roman’s offense. Raise the floor of the offense, nothing more.

DL Calais Campbell

If most NFL begin to be considered “old” after the age of 30, then Campbell is dang-near a literal fossil.

But despite his advanced, ADVANCED age, Campbell is still a very productive player. This past season with the Dolphins, Campbell recored 12 tackles for loss and five sacks with five pass deflections at the line of scrimmage. That sack total would have ranked first among all Chargers defensive tackles and his tackles for loss would have ranked first on the entire team, regardless of position.

Campbell only played on a one-year, $2 million deal in 2024. If he’s willing to move across the country for another go-round — and there’s a lot worse places to spend a year than Los Angeles — than the Chargers should be more than welcoming to the NFL’s elder statesman.

Chargers Free Agency Grades: Mike Williams

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Chargers

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

After a year away in New York Mike Williams returns home to be one of the primary pass catchers for the Bolts

It wasn’t a very long vacation in the Big Apple for Mike Williams as he returns to the Los Angeles Chargers after just one year with the New York Jets (and the Pittsburgh Steelers). The Bolts had a big need at wide receiver heading into the offseason and Williams is certainly going to help fill in some of the void, though the position still needs to be addressed in the draft later on.

Mike Williams is back with the Chargers!

1-year, $6M deal. pic.twitter.com/Ljf5x7Tmjz

— Chargers Central (@BoltCentral) March 13, 2025

Williams is of course a long-time staple Chargers fans are very familiar with after 7 seasons with the team, including multiple 1,000 yard seasons and 30 touchdowns for the Bolts. Williams will be tasked once again as a big-bodied deep threat for Justin Herbert and this offense, one that was seriously lacking last year with consistency.

Chargers WR Mike Williams says he's open to the possibility of Keenan Allen returning when asked if he's recruited him. pic.twitter.com/e8KONONtyj

— Alex Insdorf (@alexinsdorf99) March 14, 2025

The Chargers added some consistency, a veteran presence, and a solid receiver to a room that needed it. This will be a move that takes a big step forward in creating a more reliable and explosive offense under Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert. While Williams had limited impact in New York, he Williams should have better luck in a more familiar home under a relatively cheap deal.

Chargers have pro day meeting with BYU OT Caleb Etienne

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 28 Valero Alamo Bowl - BYU vs Colorado

Photo by Ken Murray/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Chargers could be looking to find a cheaper swing tackle as they met with BYU offensive tackle Caleb Etienne at the BYU pro day.

Last week, the Chargers were busy making the rounds at various pro days across the country.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the Chargers were one of a handful of teams who took the time to meet personally with BYU offensive tackle Caleb Etienne during his program’s pro day on March 19. Other teams that reportedly met with Etienne were the Dolphins, Raiders, and 49ers.

Update: OT Caleb Etienne also held in-person meetings at @Big12Conference Pro Day w/ #Dolphins, #Raiders, #Chargers, per source. #49ers virtual meeting. #Saints virtual + local day invite (in-person). #Seahawks virtual.

BJ: 9"6'

— Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) March 19, 2025

At nearly 6’8 and almost 330 pounds, Etienne looks looks like an elite prototypical offensive tackle in the NFL. However, he’s currently being viewed as a day-three draft pick with developmental traits that an NFL team would want to work with.

Etienne was named an All-American at the JUCO level back in 2019 and has since played for both Oklahoma State and BYU.

In his first year at Oklahoma State, he appeared in three games before electing to hold on to his redshirt. The following season in 2022, he started all 13 games at left tackle.

After transferring to BYU, Etienne struggled at right tackle for the Cougars before being benched and moving to guard. However, he bounced back as the team’s left tackle in 2024, earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors after starting every game as the team’s blindside protector.

During BYU’s pro day, Etienne had impressive testing numbers, clocking in at sub-5.0 in the 40 and jumping 9’6” in the broad jump.

Caleb Etienne is a OT prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored an unofficial 9.27 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 104 out of 1419 OT from 1987 to 2025.

Chargers re-sign S Tony Jefferson

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

Tony Jefferson chipped in 27 tackles and 1 tackle for loss in four starts for the Chargers after coming out of retirement.

The Chargers are officially running it back with their core group of safeties after the team announced the re-signing of veteran Tony Jefferson to a one-year deal. The former Cardinals and Ravens safety came out of retirement prior to the 2024 season and ended up playing some of his best ball towards the end of the season in place of the injured Elijah Molden.

— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) March 24, 2025

Jefferson ended the 2024 campaign with 27 total tackles and one tackle for loss while starting four games and playing in eight total. Paired with starters Derwin James and Alohi Gilman, the trio was able to remain one of the best safety rooms in the NFL following Molden’s injury he suffered in Week 15 against the Buccaneers.

For another year, Jefferson will remain in Los Angeles to continue lending his experience and wisdom to a position group full of players either in their prime or just beginning to hit their stride in the NFL.

If the Chargers hope to be even better in 2025, it’s a huge positive that a position group like this will get to run it back with the same group that worked so well together this past season.

Chargers met with potential 1st-round EDGE at NFL Combine

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku was second in the nation with 16.5 sacks in 2024.

The more signings the Chargers have made this offseason, the more it looks like Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh are attempting to set themselves up to take best player available in the first round of this year’s draft.

If that ends up being the case, I actually believe edge rusher becomes much more likely to happen at the No. 22 pick. It’s a premium position, the Chargers need to get younger there quickly knowing Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree are likely gone in 2026, and there’s a good group of high-upside players who should be available in the latter half of the first round.

One player that could go around when the Chargers pick is Boston College edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku who has done nothing but impress this draft season. At this year’s NFL draft, Ezeiruaku actually met with the Chargers in a formal setting, per The Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

For that full interview, you can check it out right here.

Boston College ED Donovan Ezeiruaku had 16.5 sacks in 2024. Ran the best Shuttle (4.19) + three-cone (6.94) among EDGEs at the Combine. Elite agility translates

First-round pick all day long. Thanks to @DonovanEze6 for joining me on @TheDraftNetwork:https://t.co/TFWihYUraP

One of the best athletic tests for edge rushers to perform well in is the three-cone drill which displays their ability to turn on a dime and accelerate around tight corners. Ezeiruaku blazed to a 6.94 in the drill at the combine which was tops among all edge rushers. That type of elite agility translate well to the pros which makes Ezeiruaku a potential gem near the end of the first.

In his final year at Boston College, Ezeiruaku notched 16.5 sacks and a whopping 20.5 tackles for loss. His sack total was good for second in the nation while his tackles for loss were fourth. At 6’2 1⁄2 and 250 pounds, he’s a bit undersized compared to what’s ideal for elite edge players, but his high football IQ and ability to play the run truly make him one of the best well-rounded edge players in this class.

Chargers met formally with KSU RB DJ Giddens

Kansas State v Iowa State

DJ Giddens proved to be one of the most elusive backs in the country in 2024 for the Kansas State Wildcats.

The Chargers may look to add another running back to their stable in this year’s draft and if they aren’t able to land someone like North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton in the first round, there will still be plenty of backs throughout day two and three that could entice the Bolts.

One of those backs could be Kansas State’s DJ Giddens, an explosive 6’0, 212-pounder who ran a 4.43 40 time and posted a 39.5-inch vertical at this year’s combine. Per The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, Giddens met formally with the Chargers while in Indianapolis.

.@KStateFB RB DJ Giddens ran for 1,343 yards in 2024. 4.43 40 (at 212!) 39.5" Vertical (2nd-best).

30 visits: Steelers, Broncos
Formals: Steelers, Chargers, Jaguars.

Appreciate DJ Giddens for joining me on @TheDraftNetwork:https://t.co/VXoACsiykK

— Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) March 27, 2025

Giddens was a three-year contributor and a two-year starter for the Wildcats from 2022-2024. He broke in his first season as a starter in 2023 with 1,226 yards and 10 touchdowns while chipping in 323 yards and three more scores through the air. In his final collegiate season, he set a new career high 1,343 yards to go with a team-leading seven rushing scores. His 6.55 yards per carry also broke the school’s previous record set by former Chargers running back Darren Sproles back in 2003.

When toting the rock, Giddens’ athelticism is on full display. He’s got incredible vision to know how to set up defenders, whether that’s with a stutter step, dead leg, or just a good ol’ fashion jump cut. When he bursts through the line and gets to the second level, he can make defenders miss in a phone booth before getting himself one-on-one with a safety or cornerback. His suddenness when pulling the trigger on a running lane near the line of scrimmage is truly fun to watch because he’s normally bursting through a whole that many running backs would have simply passed on for something more open with less upside.

The more I watch of Giddens, the more I could really see him fitting in with the Chargers and their power run game. He’s got a bit more juice than Najee Harris, something the team is likely looking for in a complementary back.
