Chargers plan to release RB Gus Edwards

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

Gus Edwards rushed for 365 yards and four touchdowns in his lone year with the Chargers.

On Friday afternoon, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Chargers have informed running back Gus Edwards that he will be released ahead of next week’s start to the new league year. Edwards will become a free agent after just one season in Los Angeles spending five seasons in Baltimore with Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 8, 2025

In his lone season with the Chargers, Edwards split time in the backfield with J.K. Dobbins while playing in 11 total games with six starts. He ended the year with 365 rushing yards and four touchdowns while mainly running as the team’s RB2. His 365 yards were the lowest of his career while his touchdowns were the third-highest total in his six-year career.

Following Edwards signing with the Chargers, many believed he was going to be the leader in the backfield for the 2024 season. However, former Ravens teammate J.K. Dobbins was signed later on last offseason and he would snatch any chance of an equal split in the backfield after an explosive first two games of the regular season in which he rushed for 266 yards.

Now, the Chargers will move into next week’s free agency period with just rookie Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins still under contract.

Los Angeles Chargers v New England Patriots

Teair Tart returns to the Chargers one a one-year deal the same day Poona Ford signs with the Rams.

The Chargers have signed yet another in-house free agent as defensive tackle Teair Tart is returning to the Bolts on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, per NFL insider Adam Schefter. After former teammate Poona Ford signed a three-year deal with the Rams, the Bolts manage to retain at least one impact player from their defensive interior in 2024.

Defensive lineman Teair Tart and the Chargers have agreed on a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million. Deal negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Mark Goodheart.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 10, 2025

Tart is the fourth in-house free agent to re-sign with the Chargers, joining edge rusher Khalil Mack, center Bradley Bozeman, and punter J.K. Scott.

In his first season with the Chargers, the 6’2, 315-pound Tart recorded 29 total tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Tart entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Florida International University in 2020. He originally signed with the Tennessee Titans where he spent his first 3+ seasons before being released in December of 2023. He’d finish that season with the Texans before signing with the Dolphins in April of 2024.

Kansas City Chiefs v Pittsburgh Steelers

After four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, Najee Harris is now set to lead the Chargers backfield in 2025.

The Chargers have a new lead back.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Chargers are expected to sign former Steelers running back Najee Harris to a one-year deal worth up to $9.25 million. Harris is coming off his fourth-consecutive 1,000-yard seasons since entering the NFL and he’s played in all 17 games in each of those seasons, never missing a contest since becoming a pro.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 11, 2025

Harris is a former first-round pick of the Steelers out of Alabama from the 2021 NFL draft. As a rookie, he rushed for 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 467 yards through the air and three more scores, culminating in being named to that year’s Pro Bowl.

Following his rookie campaign, Harris has been the picture of consistency. In the previous three seasons, Harris has ended the year with 1,034, 1,035, and 1,043 rushing yards, respectively.

While at Alabama, Harris won the 2020 Doak Walker Award (nation’s top RB) and helped the Crimson Tide win national champions in both 2017 and 2020. He was a consensus All-American in 2020 after rushing for 1,466 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Chargers signing CB Benjamin St-Juste to one-year deal

Cleveland Browns v Washington Commanders

The Chargers continue adding to their secondary by adding former Commanders CB Benjamin St-Juste.

The Chargers continue to add to their secondary as they’re reportedly signing former Commanders cornerback Benjamin St-Juste to a one-year deal. Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz have now officially replaced last year’s Week 1 starting cornerbacks in Kristian Fulton and Asante Samuel Jr. The former has already signed with the Chiefs while the latter is not expected to return to Los Angeles.

Chargers are signing former Commanders CB Benjamin St-Juste, per his agent @MikeMcCartney7.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 12, 2025

St-Juste is a former third-round pick in 2021 of the Commanders out of the University of Minnesota. Before starring for the Golden Gophers, St-Juste played one season at Michigan during Jim Harbaugh’s first season as head coach in 2017.

The 6’3, 202-pounder ran a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at the 2021 NFL Combine to go with an elite 6.63 short-cone time and a 9’11 broad jump. He’s a physically-imposing cornerback, something the Chargers did not have on the roster prior.

As a member of the Commanders, St-Juste started 45 games across four seasons. His career totals include 206 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, 34 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Chargers signing former Cardinals DT Naquan Jones to 1-year deal

Arizona Cardinals v Los Angeles Rams

Naquan Jones joins the Chargers defensive line group after posting a career-high three sacks in 2024.

Per his agent Mike McCartney, former Cardinals and Titans defensive tackle Naquan Jones has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chargers. This is the second external free agent signed by the Chargers today, both of which have been defensive linemen.

Congrats Naquan Jones agreeing to a 1 year deal with the @chargers @thealmightynay

— Mike McCartney (@MikeMcCartney7) March 13, 2025

Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh have been relentless in trying to flesh out the roster with low-cost signings. The front office double-dipping on depth along the defensive line is actually very needed, but the group is still missing a headliner. The team re-signed in-house free agent Teair earlier this week, but not a single player in the group has ever been a full-time starter.

For the second consecutive season, the Chargers may be looking at a rotation along the interior while hoping someone plays above their contract, a la Poona Ford in 2024.

Jones entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans following the 2021 NFL Draft. He started five games as a rookie but saw that number shrink to just two starts across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Halfway through 2023, he was waived by the Titans and signed by the Cardinals where he logged one more start on the year.

This past season with the Cardinals, Jones recorded a career-high three sacks and four tackles for loss to go with 27 tackles and two pass breakups.

Coincidentally, Jones is a former member of the 2021 Titans roster, something shared by both safety Elijah Molden and new teammate and fellow defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand.

Chargers, Taylor Heinicke agree to one-year, $6.2 extension

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Los Angeles Chargers v Houston Texans

The Chargers are extending Taylor Heinicke to backup Justin Herbert for the near future.

Late Thursday evening, the Chargers announced a one-year contract extension for quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Per NFL insider Adam Schefter, the deal is worth up to $6.2 million and will keep Heinicke in Los Angeles through the 2026 season.

back to work

we’ve agreed to terms with QB Taylor Heinicke → https://t.co/RMBL3MpL7Z pic.twitter.com/tjBl0LxHPV

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) March 14, 2025

The Chargers made a trade for Heinicke prior to the 2024 regular season — sending a conditional sixth-rounder to Atlanta — in order to upgrade at the backup quartetback spot behind starter Justin Herbert. Heinicke had a fair amount of starting experience for both the Commanders and Falcons over the previous three seasons which was very ideal for a worst-case scenario where Herbert misses extended time like he did to end the 2023 season.

Heinicke ended up playing in four games for the Chargers in 2024. He attempted five passes, completing three of them for 28 yards with one going for a first down against the Steelers after Herbert departed with an ankle injury.

Originally an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, Phillips began his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019 but ended up in Buffalo where he stayed through the 2020 season. Phillips made his first NFL start for the Jets in 2021 while playing in all 17 regular season games. He’d end that season with a career-high 31 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and a fumble recovery.

His next start would come two years later as a member of the Ravens in 2023. That year, he recorded 24 tackles, one tackle for loss, a forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. In 2024 with Houston, he finished with 16 tackles and one tackle for loss. In all, Phillips has been a special teams fixture wherever he’s been, notching over 1,300 snaps in that phase of the game in his career.

The 6’0, 225-pound Phillips likely replaces Nick Niemann on the team’s kick coverages as a core-four special-teamer for the Chargers.

Chargers sign OG Mekhi Becton to 2-year, $20 million

Philadelphia Eagles v Washington Commanders

The Chargers beef up their offensive line with Mekhi Becton who is fresh off his Super Bowl win with the Eagles.

The Chargers finally signed their much-needed offensive guard.

Late Friday night, the Los Angeles Chargers announced the signing of former Eagles offensive guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year deal worth $20 million. The new contract makes Becton the 11th highest-paid guard in the NFL.

we’ve signed G Mekhi Becton →https://t.co/tF5DfF2Hb7 pic.twitter.com/RWnKdKx1GZ

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) March 15, 2025

Becton is coming off his first and only season in Philadelphia where he helped them to their second Super Bowl championship in the past eight years.

The 6’7, 363-pound Becton started all 19 games (regular season and postseason) for the Eagles en route to having the best season of his career. Formally a first-round pick of the Jets in 2020, Becton entered the league as an offensive tackle. After signing with the Jets, Becton got to work with noted offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, won the starting right guard job, and the rest is history.

In 2024, Becton helped pave the way for running back Saquon Barkley to rush for over 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season. He then went on to set the single-season record for rush yards (regular and postseason) with 2,504.

The Chargers will have a decision to make about which guard spot Becton takes over. Ideally he sticks at right guard and replaces Trey Pipkins who then becomes the team’s swing tackle. Joe Hortiz mentioned Zion Johnson getting work at center this offseason, but only time will tell how serious that remark was until we the unit on the field working together and in what combination.

Becton’s signing now takes one of the team’s biggest needs off the checklist and further helps the Chargers hone in on the position they’ll take in the first round. Right now, tight end, center, edge rusher, and defensive tackle should all still be on the table.

Chargers Free Agent Tracker: Grades, analysis, and more

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati Bengals

The Chargers earned an A by re-signing Khalil Mack. Upgrading at running back with the durable Najee Harris was also good for a B+.

The Chargers have made 13 moves since the start of free agency. Seven have been re-signing in-house free agents while the other six have come externally.

As it stands, it’s a mixed bag. Joe Hortiz has been working the same bargain-bin style of management he showed last offseason while navigating the team’s murky 2024 cap situation. This year, the Chargers had one of the largest available cap spaces of any team, but the process has remained the same.

That’s mainly due to Hortiz’s goal of developing a very strong and lasting cycle of compensatory picks for the team. By keeping these contracts low, he’s able to maximize his chances at extra picks in future. So far, the process is working as the Chargers received three additional comp picks in the 2025 draft (two sixth-rounders, one seventh).

At any rate, it’s time to grade every free agent move by the Chargers thus far, but be sure to stop on back for every new move the Chargers make.

EDGE Khalil Mack: A

When the Chargers finally released Joey Bosa, the writing was on the wall that they were going to re-sign Khalil Mack for at least one more season. They did just that by handing him a fully-guaranteed $18 million deal that pays him handsomely. He’ll lead an edge room in 2025 that still features Tuli Tuipulotu, Bud Dupree, and more than likely one new rookie from this year’s draft class.

RB Najee Harris: B+

The Chargers can still bring J.K. Dobbins back if the money and situation calls for it, but they most definitely upgraded the position if they do nothing else by signing the ever-durable Harris. All Harris has done since enter the NFL is rush for 1,000+ yards each season and stay healthy. He’s never missed a game in four seasons! Talk about a difference for the Chargers backfield.

He’s not a home-run hitter, but Greg Roman’s offense doesn’t need that. They’ll find juice in the backfield elsewhere, but a big back who can still make someone miss and produce doubles throughout an entire game will help the Bolts wear down opposing defenses.

CB Donte Jackson: B-

I was a little concerned with this singing as Jackson did not grade well by Pro Football Focus in 2024 (187th out of 223 qualifying cornerbacks). However, you can’t scoff at five interceptions, a number not hit by a Chargers defender since safety Tre Boston in 2017.

Jackson wins with excellent speed and athleticism to stick in the hip pocket of receivers. He’s also best in zone coverage, something the Chargers play a lot of under DC Jesse Minter. This defensive staff got a lot out of rookies Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart, which makes me confident Jackson will be able to play some of his best ball in LA.

Getting a starting corner for less than $7 million APY is also excellent, especially seeing that Kristian Fulton signed for $10 million APY with Kansas City.

Mike Williams: B

The Chargers needed help at the X and Williams sure fits that role. Without the prior chemistry with the team, on top of his paltry 2024 stat line, this would deserve a lower grade. However, this signing not only fits into the team’s budget, but the upside Williams has with Herbert will easily provide better bang for their buck.

Williams won’t be expected to be WR1 anymore and that’s a big positive compared to previous seasons where it simply HAD to be Keenan Allen or him leading the way for the passing game to be productive. Now over 30 years old, Williams will be utilized in his usual facet, but the snap count should be lower to help alleviate mileage through the season.

DT Teair Tart: B-

The Chargers were going to have to re-sign at least one of Tart or Poona Ford and after the Rams gave the latter $9.2 million APY, getting the former back was mandatory. Tart re-signed on a one-year deal worth $5.5 million, a much more palatable number for Joe Hortiz. He’ll likely slide in to Ford’s starting role unless the Chargers draft a new starter early in next month’s draft.

DT Naquan Jones: B

Jones was signed to help fill out the defensive line room that has lost both Poona Ford (Rams) and Morgan Fox (unsigned). At 27 years old, he’s an ascending rotational player that is coming off a career-high three sacks and four tackles for loss in 2024 while not seeing a start. You also might remember him from whipping Trey Pipkins and sacking Justin Herbert from this past season.

The Chargers are familiar with new NT Naquan Jones pic.twitter.com/LGRwjW7cx6

— Alex Insdorf (@alexinsdorf99) March 13, 2025

DT Da’Shawn Hand: C

Along with Jones above, Hand was signed on the same day as another low-cost, low-risk move to flesh out the defensive interior. He’s missed a lot of games to injury and is currently 29 years old. It also helps there aren’t a ton of miles on him despite his age. This was a needed signing and I’m truly not expecting him to play all that much unless injuries hit the position group.

Per some info dug up by our friends at the Thunder Down Under podcast, both Hand and Jones ranked inside the top 33 defensive tackle in terms of missed tackle rate, showing that both are some of the best at getting ball carriers down when they’re able to get hands-on.

Missed Tackle Rates (2024):
- Naquan Jones (4.8%, 14th best rate of 143 Defensive Tackles)
- De’Shawn Hand (6.3%, 33rd of 143)
- Poona (11.1%, 65th of 143)
- Tart (15.2%, 102nd of 143)
Jones and Hand both < 7.5% for their careers.

— Thunder Down Under Chargers Podcast (@TDU_Chargers) March 14, 2025

CB Benjamin St-Juste: C

The Chargers signing St-Juste tell me they have no interest in bringing back Asante Samuel Jr. and they’re perfectly content filling out the room with cost-efficient players with athletic upside. St-Juste has great size at 6’3 and 200+ pounds, but he’s a very handsy player that will draw his fair share of penalties, not all that different from Zont. Since entering the league in 2021, only three defensive backs have racked up more penalty yardage, per TruMedia.

I would probably give this signing an even worse grade, but he’s only making $2.5 million on a one-year deal. This is a depth signing and if all goes well, he’s not likely to see the field all that much.

Also, here he is getting beat badly by new teammate Mike Williams.

St-Juste absolutely TOASTED by Mike Williams pic.twitter.com/0GEhfco7Ss

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) November 10, 2024

LB Denzel Perryman: B

Just a solid move here. Perryman is getting older but he’s familiar with the defense and they needed to keep a veteran presence in the room while 2024 third-rounder Junior Colson continues to develop following a rough rookie season that was only made worse due to injuries. He’s likely not going to stay healthy the entire season, but the 11-13 games will be more than enough to justify his deal.

LB Troy Dye: A-

When Nick Niemann couldn’t pass up the offer from the Texans, Dye was an imperative signing for the Chargers, not like the Tart-Ford situation I touched on earlier. Niemann and Dye were two of the two of the team’s best special teams coverage players in 2024 and there just wasn’t a world where the Chargers would let both walk this offseason.

Due to injuries to both Colson and Perryman, Dye had his most productive season on defense while playing his best ball down the final stretch of the season.

This gets a high grade for me mainly for the special teams contributions, but it helps that he showed flashes on defense, too.

WR Jalen Reagor: D+

The Chargers likely value Reagor’s value as depth for both receiver and returner, but I just don’t see it. He had more blunders than impactful plays for the Chargers in ‘24 and I don’t think he was worth bringing back, even at his minimal one-year, $1.337 million deal.

His fumble through the back of the end zone inside the five-yard line against the Cardinals — a game where the Chargers narrowly lost in an abysmal offensive showing — is still very much stuck with me.

C Bradley Bozeman: B-

If the Chargers brought back Bozeman on a multi-year deal and paid him like an impact player, I’d have given this a much worse because...he wasn’t that. However, giving him essentially fringe-starter money at $3.25 million APY tells us the Chargers are not ruling out upgrading at center while still having a backup with starting experience ready to go if injuries arise or they simply fail to actually find said new starter.

I didn’t like this signing at all on the face, but giving it some thought and looking at the numbers helps compartmentalize it properly within the grand scheme of things.

P J.K. Scott: A

The Chargers wanted to keep their field goal operation intact for the foreseeable future and Scott is a big part of that as the team’s holder. This was a needed move for continuity in the Chargers special teams unit.

Chargers Free Agency Grades: Donte Jackson

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns

Scott Galvin-Imagn Images

Yet another former Pittsburgh Steelers player joined the Bolts in free agency to try and help fill a hole

One of the bigger needs heading into this offseason for the Los Angeles Chargers was at the cornerback slot. With multiple corners headed out the door in free agency, the Bolts needed to find some starter level players at the position as soon as possible. Having already signed Najee Harris away from the Steelers, the team turned towards Pittsburgh once more to find an answer in Donte Jackson to slot in as a potential starting cornerback.

— Powder Blue Blood (@pwdrblueblood) March 11, 2025

Jackson was a long-time staple for the Carolina Panthers, serving as the team's starter for 6 seasons before being shipped off to Pittsburgh last year. Jackson has had his career up and downs, ranging from a solid starter to a serviceable journeyman. One thing Jackson has in spades however is speed. One of the faster defensive backs in the league, Jackson has the ability to shadow any teams primary speed threat without help over the top as well as make up for lost ground covered if he gets beat early on the route.

— PFF LA Chargers (@PFF_Chargers) March 10, 2025

While Jackson isn’t going to walk in day one and be a lockdown corner, the Chargers found themselves a solid starter for the short term. The team may still need to add talent at the position later in free agency or find it in the 2025 NFL Draft, but Jackson is a very solid start especially given his contract value of 2 years, $13 million.

Projecting how the Chargers should fill out the remainder of their roster

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

The Chargers still have plenty of roster spots to reinforce ahead of the 2025 season.

The Chargers have made their fair share of moves over the first week of free agency. They’ve fleshed out their defensive line room with low-cost signings, signed one of the top guards available, and found a new starting running back.

Still, there’s much more to do if they want their roster to be objectively better than it was a season ago. Thankfully, there’s still plenty of time to continue making deals on top of next month’s NFL draft.

Below, I touch on every position group for the Chargers and give my thoughts on where they should go from here with each room.

Let’s go ahead and take a look.

Quarterback (3 under contract)

Need: None

The Chargers solidified their quarterback room by signing Taylor Heinicke to an extension through the 2026 season. Easton Stick remains QB3 and the emergency QB on game days.

What they should do: Nothing

Running back (4)

Need: RB1b, Depth

The Chargers upgraded the durable and longevity of their starting running back spot by signing former Steelers rusher Najee Harris. With four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and zero games missed since entering the NFL, the Bolts have a much higher floor for their rushing game than in years past.

However, behind Harris sits 2024 sixth-rounder Kimani Vidal, Hassan Haskins, and Jaret Patterson. Both Vidal and Haskins had their moments last year, but nothing truly happened that would make the Chargers NOT consider adding another impactful runner.

The Lions have David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The Ravens have Derrick Henry and Justice Hill. The Bucs have Bucky Irving and Rachaad White. It only makes sense for the Chargers — if they truly want to be the team the claim to want to be — that they go and find a complementary back in this year’s draft to pair with Harris.

What they should do: Find a running mate for Najee Harris

Wide receiver (8)

Need: Rookie/future starter, depth

Bringing back Mike Williams helps the Chargers in the immediate as he helps give Justin Herbert a reliable X receiver. This will allow Ladd McConkey to do most of his work out of the slot and let Quentin Johnston move around the formation in hopes of gaining a positional mismatch.

But with Williams only signed for one year, and the depth looking bleak behind those three, the Chargers should definitely find a young receiver they can develop in this year’s draft, if not sign an available veteran to help in spot duty if an injury should arise.

What they should do: Draft a receiver with the expectation he starts in year two or sign a cheap veteran to solidify the room

Tight end (3)

Need: TE1, Depth

Tight is one of the top positions the Chargers could target in the first round of this year’s draft. Thanks to some of the free agency moves made by other teams, someone like Michigan’s Colston Loveland could easily slide to the Bolts at No. 22. If that’s not the case, the Chargers still MUST come away with a young tight end as their current depth chart of Will Dissly, Tucker Fisk, and McCallan Castles is looking super bleak.

In fact, I wouldn’t blame the Chargers for double-dipping at tight end, similar to how the Ravens have done it twice in the past decade. With 10 picks, there’s no reason for them not to in hopes of landing an impact player at an essential position.

What they should do: Draft a tight end in the first two rounds, then another on day three

Offensive tackle (3)

Need: Depth

The Chargers have not re-signed Foster Sarell which means the only tackles left on the roster are Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt, and 2024 UDFA Tyler McLellan. Trey Pipkins remains on the team and could end up being retained and relegated to the swing tackle role following the signing of Mekhi Becton, but there’s a chance he’s released at some point for additional cap space.

If Pipkins is released, the Chargers absolutely must build up their depth at tackle because one injury either Alt or Slater would spell disaster.

What they should do: Find a new swing tackle on day three

Interior offensive line (7)

Need: New starting center

The Chargers gave Bradley Bozeman a very minimal contract to stick around. By no means should that stop them from looking for an upgrade at the pivot. If Bozeman does get replaced, his cap hit of $2.315 million is just fine for a solid backup.

If Bozeman is the starter to begin 2025, I would hope the Chargers found a new starting left guard as I would hope the goal wasn’t to run back one of the worst interior three in the league with just one new face.

What they should do: Aim to find a future center on day two

Interior defensive line (7)

Need: A headliner/DL1

The Chargers let Poona Ford walk in free agency which is certainly their biggest mistake made thus far. To help replace that loss, the team has signed two career backups in Naquan Jones and Da’Shawn Hand. Both will be part of the rotation with Teair Tart and Otito Ogbonnia.

The one thing this interior is missing is a real name. A bonafide starter. None of the guys they have in this group are likely starters on any other team. This leads me to believe the Chargers plan to draft a new starter on the first two days.

Michigan’s Kenneth Grant is a common name in this scenario. Luckily it’s a pretty deep defensive tackle where some solid names should still be there on day two.

What they should do: Find a new starter in the the first three rounds or at least another guy to make the room competitive

Edge rusher (6)

Need: Future starter, depth

The Chargers got Khalil Mack to come back for one more year. He’ll join Tuli Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree as the team’s top three. Behind them are a handful of former undrafted players that shouldn’t be asked to see the field just yet. Without needing to hit a home run, the Bolts should look to find a developmental prospect to sit behind Mack and Co. for most of year one with the mindset to hit the ground running in 2026 next to Tuli.

What they should do: Draft someone in round three or four, potentially double-dip on day three

Linebacker (7)

Need: Depth

The Chargers lost special-team and depth linebacker Nick Niemann to the Texans in free agency. They did manage to re-sign both Denzel Perryman and Troy Dye. They’ve got the bodies here, but I’d like to see them upgrade their depth as much as possible. Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste, Shaq Quarterman, and Del’Shawn Phillips are the team’s current LB5, LB6, and LB7.

If they run it back as it is, they should be fine, especially if Junior Colson comes into his own in year two.

What they should do: Find a cheap free agent or use one of their late day three picks on a special-teamer type

Cornerback (5)

Need: New starting slot CB

The Chargers hit on both Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart as fifth-round rookies a year ago. They added former Panthers and Steelers starter Donte Jackson to be a starter while they added former Commanders corner Benjamin St-Juste as depth.

They have the bodies and depth overall, but I’d like to see the team upgrade their slot corner (when Derwin James isn’t in that role). Current slot Ja’Sir Taylor was a massive liability last season and the Chargers would be mistaken to let him see the field as much as he did for another season.

What they should do: Use one of their many day three picks on at least one and hope their free agent signings pan out

Safety (5)

Need: Depth

With arguably the top safety trip in the NFL, the Chargers don’t need a starter nor a next man in, but the depth behind these three is uninspiring. Kendall Williamson and Emany Johnson are fine for the end of the roster depth, but adding at least one more trustworthy player to an important position in Jesse Minter’s defense would be ideal.

What they should do: Use a day three pick to try and upgrade depth

Special teams (3)

Need: None

The whole kicking operation will return for another season. Nothing to add here. Keep it simple.

What they should do: Absolutely nothing

Chargers Free Agency Grades: Mekhi Becton

NFL: Super Bowl LIX-Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The Chargers found their interior help with one of the best signings of this free agency period

While one of the highlights of the 2024 season for the Los Angeles Chargers was the play of their two young bookend tackles, the team had a serious need to improve their interior offensive line heading into this offseason. With the signing of Super Bowl champion and former Philadelphia Eagle Meki Becton, the Bolts took a massive step in the right direction to cementing one of the better offensive lines in the league.

Jim Harbaugh will Iove Mekhi Becton. pic.twitter.com/ghFUvGRFHi

— Alex Insdorf (@alexinsdorf99) March 15, 2025

After inking a 2-year $20 million dollar deal Becton becomes an immediate upgrade to the interior of a very talented Chargers offensive line. One of the best run blocking guards in the league, Becton helped pave the way for NFL Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley. Becton was a large piece to the Eagles offensive success and his elite athleticism and strength makes him the potential long-term answer at the position.

Mekhi Becton transitioned from tackle to guard in 2024, where his size and strength proved to be a major advantage on the interior.

Becton allowed a career-low 6.9% pressure rate last season, the 10th-lowest among right guards (min. 200 pass blocks).@chargers | #BoltUp https://t.co/z6wnJfyNEQ pic.twitter.com/RaD3FS6GCa

— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) March 17, 2025

While there is some inherent risk in signing Becton due to his struggles early on in his career with New York at the tackle position as well as injury concerns, Becton comes as a value signing given the number he put up last season. This is easily the best signing the Chargers have made so far this offseason and moves the team one step closer towards the identity Jim Harbaugh is attempting to establish within the trenches.

Chargers sign former Raiders C Andre James

Los Angeles Chargers v Las Vegas Raiders

The Chargers are bringing in Andre James who started at center for the Raiders over the past four seasons.

The Chargers are continuing their goal of reshaping the interior of the offensive line as they’ve announced the signing of former Raiders starting center Andre James. James has held down the pivot in Las Vegas the past four seasons and is now coming back to Los Angeles after starring for the UCLA Bruins in college.

Contract details are unknown and we’ll update this post as soon as they’re made public.

holdin’ it down

we’ve signed C Andre James → https://t.co/Lg8H60kuls pic.twitter.com/CYgshWs5ot

— Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) March 18, 2025

At 6’4 and 300 pounds, James has 61-of-80 career games since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2019. After playing just 117 total snaps his first two seasons, James won the starting center job for the Raiders in 2021. During the 2022 season, James was a part of the Raiders offensive line that helped running back Josh Jacobs rush for a league-leading 1,653 yards and score 12 touchdowns.

Despite the starting experience on his resume, I’m not entirely sold this move is the Chargers signifying who their next starting center will be. James was at his best in 2023, but the 2024 season was his lowest-graded year by PFF since he won the starting job. His season grade of 55.6 ranked 29th among the 32 centers to play at least 500 snaps. Bozeman ranked 23rd with a grade of 61.2.

Even looking back at both of their careers, their seasonal grades are very comparable. The main difference being that James has been graded as a better pass protector over his career while Bozeman has been the better run blocker per PFF’s grades. You’d think that would mean the team sees Bozeman as the better fit, but after seeing Herbert get hit so frequently against the Texans, Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh are more than willing to take a shot on a pass protector and coach him up in the run game than vice versa.
