Rising Stars Ron Harper Jr. quiet in All-Star Weekend stints

gettyimages-2261541775.jpg

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 13: Dylan Harper #2 of Team Melo is defended by Ron Harper Jr. #13 of Team Austin in the Rising Stars Game during 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend at Intuit Dome on February 13, 2026 in Inglewood, California. Boston Celtics two-way player Ron Harper Jr. appeared twice in the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities, but fell short of leaving a mark on either competition.

The 25-year-old participated in the Castrol Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday and the Kia Shooting Stars competition on Saturday.

Harper Jr. started at shooting guard for Team Austin in the first game of the three-game mini-tournament, across from his brother, San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper, who started at forward for Team Melo.

While Ron Harper Jr. logged the second-most minutes of any player on Team Austin, he finished the game as its only scoreless player.

The G League star shot 0-5 from the field and 0-2 from three point range, and spent the majority of his time on the offensive end uninvolved and standing in the corner without the ball.

Both three point attempts were particularly rough. One came early in the game, when Harper Jr. dribbled into a shot and got blocked. The other attempt came on the second-to-last play of the game, when he took a shot several feet behind the perimeter with plenty of time left on the shot clock… and missed everything.

Dylan Harper got the ball on the next possession, took it at his brother, made him dance with a couple moves, and sunk the game-winning shot.

— Ian Inangelo (@iinangelo) February 14, 2026

Nevertheless, it wasn’t all negative for Harper Jr. While his stat line was not glamorous, he did a lot of the unsung dirty work for Team Austin.

He posted a team-high 7 rebounds, including 3 offensive boards, and 2 assists, displaying excellent effort while battling in the trenches. He got a good tip that led to another rebound he was uncredited for, recovered a ball lost by one of his teammates, and got the game started by assisting on an alley-oop dunk.

Since Team Austin lost the game, it did not advance in the mini-tournament and Harper Jr. did not get another chance to shine.

During the Kia Shooting Stars competition, Harper Jr. and his team — which consisted of himself, his brother, Dylan, and his father, Ron Harper Sr., as well as celebrity passer 2 Chainz — also failed to progress past the first round.

The competition had four teams of three players shoot from seven spots, from a layup to an elbow jumper to a deep three-point shot from the logo, in an attempt to rack up as many points as possible over 70 seconds.

Team Harper finished the first round in third place, with 18 total points. Ron Jr. hit 3 of his 9 shots for 7 points, while his brother and father finished with 9 and 2 points, respectively.

Still winners in our eyes 😂💫 pic.twitter.com/44wsIG7ceX

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 14, 2026

They were in second place following their performance, but Team Knicks — the eventual winner — came next and immediately unseated Team Cameron for the top spot in the competition, pushing Team Harper to third.

Only the top 2 teams made the final round, so Team Harper was left behind and Harper Jr.’s participation in All-Star Weekend came to an end.

The Celtics’ next participant in the festivities will be Jaylen Brown, who will start for Team USA Stripes in tomorrow’s All-Star Game, which will feature a four-game tournament between two teams of U.S. players and one team of international players.

Team USA Stripes will play in games 2 and 3, which are slated to begin at 5:55 p.m. and 6:25 p.m. EST. The two teams with the best records will advance to an All-Star Championship game at 7:10 p.m. EST. The games can be viewed on NBC or streamed on Peacock.

Which Celtic will make his 1st All Star game next season?

imagn-25591428.jpg

Mar 5, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; For the first time in Boston Celtics history, two teammates scored over 40 points in a game, Boston Celtics guard Derrick White (9), 41 points, and guard Payton Pritchard (11) ,43 points as they joke around after their win over the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden. Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-Imagn Images | Winslow Townson-Imagn Images

This year’s NBA All Star game will be Jaylen Brown’s 5th. Jayson Tatum has been in 6 himself. Newcomer Nikola Vucevic appeared in two.

If they are back at normal health next season, I would expect to see Brown and Tatum back in the game. But will there be a 3rd member of the team to join them? And if so, who might that be?

The obvious choice would be Derrick White, who has been knocking on the door of the honor for a few years running. He’s clearly deeply valuable to this team, but too often his best attributes are subtle and don’t get the attention that they deserve. His shooting touch was a bit off early this season, so that probably doomed his chances. Perhaps a hot shooting winter next season could earn him a spot.

Next up is Payton Pritchard, who has thrived now as both a starter and reserve for the Celtics. He scores at multiple levels despite his comparatively diminutive size. He takes care of the ball and has a knack for getting buckets when the team most needs it (in particular at the buzzer in dramatic fashion).

Or could someone else leapfrog both of them? Neemias Queta perhaps? Sam Hauser? Perhaps one of the young wings takes a major step forward. What about Hugo Gonzalez? I know these are all long, long shots, but you never know. Ok, any of those guys sniffing the All Star game next season is a bit of a reach next season, but what about in a few years?

So what do you think? Who’s at the All Star game next season?

Must Cs: Jayson Tatum teases return with “The Quiet Work”

During Sunday’s All-Star Game festivities, Jayson Tatum and the NBA on NBC dropped this trailer:

Per the YouTube summary, the five-part documentary:

For the first time in his life, the game that defined Jayson Tatum was taken away by an Achilles injury. The five-part docuseries THE QUIET WORK follows Jayson through the most challenging stretch of his career as he fights to return to the NBA. From the locker room to the hospital room, through rehab and recovery, and ultimately back to the court, this is the unseen side of his journey and the work no one ever witnesses.

Until now.

Paired with the news this weekend that the Celtics’ March 1st home game against visiting Philadelphia 76ers was rescheduled from 6 pm to primetime at 8 pm and air on NBC, the speculation that Tatum is set return soon seems more and more like a reality. He had previously said that his first game back would be at TD Garden.

Earlier in the week, President of Basketball Operations threw some cold water on the rising expectations that JT was just around the corner from stepping back on the floor, saying, “(It’s) best for Jayson Tatum to come back when he’s 110% healthy, he’s fully clear by everybody that matters in that decision and he’s got great peace of mind and ready to do it. That’s it. That’s the objective and that’s what we’re gonna stick with,” Stevens said.

“When we feel 100%, it’ll be his, it’ll be a group getting together and talking, but I think our medical people are really good, I think his doctors are really good, so we’re gonna listen to them, he’s listening to them. I think he and Nick have had an amazing work ethic through this recovery, and when it’s right, then we’ll all sit down and talk about it, but there’s still no force from us, there’s no pressure from us, but there’s also not going to be any of us saying, well, why don’t you take another week? When he’s ready, he’s ready.”

Then, Tatum’s rehab moved to controlled 5-on-5 including a practice with the Maine squad with Hugo Gonzalez and Amari Williams in tow.

After the workout, Tatum said, “It doesn’t mean I’m coming back or not.” There may still not be a definitive decision made, but all signs — the tea leaves, the media push, the physical ramp up — point to Tatum return on the horizon.

Derrick White doesn’t need to make shots to be elite

gettyimages-2260636150.jpg

BOSTON, MA - FEBRUARY 11: Derrick White #9 and Jordan Walsh #27 of the Boston Celtics high five during the game against the Chicago Bulls on February 11, 2026 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Derrick White is testing the validity of the old NBA adage that it is a “make or miss league.”

Despite enduring a career-worst scoring efficiency season, he is still grading out as one of the league’s most impactful players. This should not be possible. Even in the analytics era, we should still be able to cling to the concept that putting the orange ball in the basket is the key indicator of how good a player and a team is.

However, both Derrick White and the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics are, so far, successfully bending the reality of that widely accepted truth.

Efficient scoring is typically a staple of the Derrick White Experience. Each of the past three seasons, White has posted a true shooting percentage of 60%, ranking him 24th among guards from the 2022-2023 season to the 2024-2025 season. This season, efficient scoring has elluded him. D White is in the midst of a 52% true shooting season, which would have placed him at 156th among guards over the same three season stretch. 52% is an abhorrent number. But it has not mattered when it comes to impacting winning.

There is no perfect “catch all” metric, however a widely accepted one is Estimated Plus Minus (EPM) that Dunks and Threes created. Again, not perfect, but it typically spits out the best guys at the top of the league each year without many outliers. For example, last season’s top-10 players were: Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, Steph Curry, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton. This season, despite his ice-cold shot-making, Derrick White ranks 11th in EPM. So how is D White doing it? The answer is simple: he’s doing everything else at an extremely high level. Shot blocking, playmaking, rebounding, and of course, making Derrick White plays.

Let’s quickly zoom in on just how impactful Derrick White has been for the Celtics this season. When White is on the court, the Celtics have a +11 net rating. This would rank them second in the NBA, slightly behind OKC, who currently have an +11.5 net rating. When Derrick White is off the court, the Celtics have a +1.7 net rating. This would rank the team at 14th in the NBA. That is a monstrous on/off swing of 9.3 points per 100 possessions. For context, let’s compare that on/off swing to the elite of the elite:

  • Nikola Jokic – 15.2
  • Shai Gilgeous Alexander – 9.9
  • Cade Cunningham – 7.3
  • Luka Doncic – 6.6
  • Kevin Durant – 4.6
  • Anthony Edwards – 0.3

Derrick White is putting up superstar numbers. More accurately, he’s putting up superstar NBA nerd numbers.

Derrick White agrees. On the most recent episode of Derrick’s podcast “White Noise”, his co-host, Alex Welsh, shared a message that White sent to their group chat.

“I don’t have All Star numbers, just All-Star impact.”

Derrick White is correct. He impacts the game at not just an All-Star level, but an All-NBA level. Sadly, White’s cold shooting likely cost him his first All-Star appearance.

Now that we have established the level at which Derrick White impacts winning, let’s examine how he’s doing it. It starts on the defensive end, and it starts with White being the best shot-blocking guard since Dwyane Wade. White is currently averaging 1.4 blocks per game. There are three guards in the history of the sport who have averaged at least 1.4 blocks per game: Michael Jordan (twice), Tracy McGrady, and Derrick White. Even Dwyane Wade reached only 1.3 blocks per game in 2008. And if we’re being honest, T-Mac is six-foot-eight, hardly a guard. In a vacuum, Derrick White providing center-like rim protection is mind-boggling.

View Link

Now, when you put it in the context of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics, you start to understand why advanced analytics are head over heels for Derrick White. While Neemias Queta is doing a wonderful job protecting the rim this season, as soon as he goes to the bench, the Celtics do not have a traditional rim protector. Luka Garza has been a revelation for the Celtics, but he would never be mistaken for a rim protector. Neither would the recently acquired Nikola Vučević.

There have also been large stretches of the season when Joe Mazzulla has opted for no big men on the court. Enter Derrick White. Opposing offensive players are shooting 5.1% fewer shots at the rim when Derrick White is on the court. That puts White in the 97th percentile. That number indicates that players are deterred from going to the rim when Derrick White is out there. Not quite in a Victor Wembanyama way, but in a Derrick White way. When opponents actually challenge Derrick White at the rim, they are shooting 10.4% worse than they typically would. For context, Rudy Gobert is currently forcing opponents to shoot 10.1% worse at the rim. There is no need for a traditional rim protector when you have Derrick White. White has been comfortably the best guard defender in the league this season and has a case for the most valuable defender as well.

However, the individual scoring efficiency has not been there for Derrick White this season, but he is still helping drive an elite offense. One of the tenets of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics is taking care of the basketball. Derrick White ranks in the 90th percentile in turnover percentage (while having a career high in usage). Not only does White do an excellent job of not turning the ball over, he also excels at generating assists. Derrick is generating 14.2 potential assists per 100 possessions, which places him in the 95th percentile. It feels as if there are infinite ways D White pushes things forward on offense for the Celtics. The team plays faster with Derrick on the court; their two-point field goal percentage is higher, and they generate more shots at the rim. Derrick White is the skeleton key that unlocks every lineup he finds himself in.

View Link

If a player is going to get traded, they should try to get traded to Derrick White’s team. He will make them feel right at home. Welcome to TD Garden, Vuc.

The last piece of Derrick White’s game that rounds out his superstar impact, is the Derrick White plays. These plays are unquantifiable. Know in your heart that these plays are the final infinity stone in Derrick White’s infinity gauntlet.

View Link

A superhero analogy is the only analogy applicable because the only explanation for Derrick being able to steal this ball is that he’s actually Spider-Man.

Derrick White is a microcosm of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics. The Celtics have a true shooting percentage of 57.9% this season. That puts them smack bang in the middle of the league at 15th. Meanwhile the Celtics rank second in offensive efficiency. Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Co. are figuring out how to be an elite basketball team without being an elite shot-making team. Don’t turn the ball over, protect the rim, make the right play, crash the glass, and be willing to die on the court every night.

When do you think Jayson Tatum is going to make his season debut? (daily topic)

imagn-28149685.jpg

For what it is worth, Jayson Tatum has yet to make any announcement about his return to the court this season. He has not ruled out the possibility that he could miss the entire season. That makes sense because any number of setbacks could move his timeline back in an abundance of caution.

However, all outward signs seem to indicate that he’s gearing up for a return in the near future. Some recent news indicates that NBC will be airing a documentary on his comeback journey. In addition, many have speculated about the league’s decision to move the March 1st game against Philadelphia into primetime on NBC. Of course there are other, non-Tatum reasons to flex the schedule, and it doesn’t mean it will be his debut.

So I thought I’d throw this topic out. Keeping in mind that he has said in the past that he wants to return in a home game, when do you think he’ll return?

What daily Celtics topics would you like to discuss? (daily topic)

I promise I haven’t completely run out of topics to discuss. At least not yet. I just wanted to see how you like these daily topics and if there are ways I could be improving them.

Note that I don’t think I can keep this up forever. My goal is to finish out the month of February doing daily topics and then maybe shift back to a weekly thing (I still like the headline Topic Tuesday – even if that means forcing myself to write on Mondays).

So I’m looking to you to give me ideas and feedback. Think of it as an open mailbag, except instead of answering your questions, I’ll share your questions with the rest of the community. So basically, I’m like the guy in Office Space who brings the specs from the customers to the engineers (and doesn’t actually do anything of use). “I am good at dealing with people. Can’t you understand that?” I digress.

Do you want questions about specific players? Team general questions? NBA questions? Off topic questions?

So hit me up with some Celtics questions that I can then turn around and hit you with!

What are your thoughts on the NBC Sports Boston crew? (daily topic)

Cheers to commentor 1130PAR for suggesting this topic. Keep ‘em coming!

We Celtics fanatics consume a ridiculous volume of Boston Celtics content and the large majority of the game coverage is fed to us by NBC Sports Boston as the Regional Sports Network for the team. So much so that they become like part of the family.

I have tremendous respect for the work that these individuals put into the coverage and appreciate their efforts. Just like the players, however, there are ups and downs and learning curves for everyone. So give us your thoughts on the job that they are doing.

  • Brian Scalabrine and Drew Carter have the unenviable job of following legends Mike and Tommy (no last names needed). With that said, they’ve developed their own cadence and voice over the years.
  • Abby Chin has been a been a popular, long-time sideline reporter for the team (which included a brief departure due to budget cuts).
  • Eddie House, Tom Giles, Chris Forsberg, Kayla Burton, and Michael Holley others serve as Studio analysts and hosts.
  • Behind the scenes there are countless people working on the look, feel, content, and flow of the coverage.

So how are they doing? What kind of feedback would you want to give them? What would you like to see more or less of in their coverage?

Former Celtics champion’s injury status in question in Warriors game

ORLANDO, FL - APRIL 27: Kristaps Porzingis #8 and Al Horford #42 of the Boston Celtics look on during the game against the Orlando Magic during Round 1 Game 4 of the 2025 NBA Playoffs on April 27, 2025 at Kia Center in Orlando, Florida. SAN FRANCISCO — When the Celtics face the Warriors on Wednesday, Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis could both face the Celtics for the very first time since their respective tenures in Boston ended last summer.

Porzingis is questionable to play against the Celtics as he continues to deal with a left Achilles tendon injury, while Horford is good to go.

How Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis have fared this season

Al Horford signed a two-year contract with the Warriors in free agency, while Kristaps Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a cost-cutting move.

Now, both Celtics champions will lace up against their former squad.

Both players have had somewhat underwhelming years by their own standards.

Horford is averaging 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game, while shooting 42.9% from the field and 33.8% from three. He dealt with sciatica early in the season, ultimately appearing in just 34 of the Warriors’ 55 games.

Porzingis has yet to make his Warriors debut, but he averaged 17.1 points in 17 games for the Atlanta Hawks. Porzingis was traded to the Warriors ahead of the trade deadline after an injury-riddled first-half of the season. While the Celtics and Hawks faced off twice before the trade deadline, Porzingis did not lace up for either game.

While Porzingis is questionable to play, it seems likely he’ll be suiting up. At the Warriors’ practice on Wednesday, Porzingis indicated he’s likely to make his Warriors debut on Thursday against his former squad, per the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

“It’s gonna be weird, especially the first game back against Boston,” Porzingis said, per Washburn. “It’s gonna be cool, seeing all the guys again.”

Horford, meanwhile, is not on the injury report for the Warriors and thus should be good to go.

Both the Celtics, Warriors are missing key stars

For the Warriors, Jimmy Butler is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, while Seth Curry (left sciatic nerve irritation) and Steph Curry (right patellofemoral pain) are also both out.

For the Celtics, the only player on the injury report is Jayson Tatum, who has yet to play this season as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Tatum’s potential return continues to loom, but he said last week he has yet to make a decision about lacing up this season.

The Warriors (29-26) currently hold the Western Conference’s 8th-best record, while the Celtics (35-19) have the East’s second-best record.

The Boston Celtics returned to the court after the All Star break Thursday night, to face the eighth placed Golden State Warriors. Boston won their first game of a four-game West Coast road trip as they survived a late scare but dominated the Warriors through three quarters, 121-110. Brown had a triple double after just three quarters, Pritchard and Hauser combined for 42 points for Boston.

The Warriors came into the game without Steph Curry, Seth Curry and Jimmy Butler and started with a lineup of Pat Spencer, De’Anthony Melton, Myles Moody, Gui Santos and Draymond Green. Former C’s front court pairing of Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford started on the opposing bench after departing the C’s last summer. Boston rolled with the post deadline lineup of White, Brown, Hauser, Scheierman and Queta once again.

Moses Moody hit the game’s first bucket on a triple, Boston in the road green uniforms went inside on the first play to Queta as he rolled to bucket and drew a foul. With Ron Harper Jr. and Jaylen Brown the only Celtics active during All Star festivities, the rest of the squad had several days off. Brown knifed past three Warrior defenders to hit on his first layup with the left hand.

Hauser hit his first triple for Boston from the top of the key, Scheierman nailed a three of his own as Boston went up 11-10 early. Derrick White hit a mid range jumper then cut to the basket for a layup as the pace was high early. Boston up 17-15 shooting 54% percent at the first timeout in San Francisco.

Al Horford and Nikola Vucevic were the first big men off the bench for both teams. Ron Harper Jr. hit a corner triple from the bench, fresh off his All Star weekend appearance. Baylor Scheierman stole the ball at halfcourt and went all the way to the cup for his fifth point of the game.

Payton Pritchard once again came off the bench to spark the C’s, he had a killer crossover straight out of Tim Hardaway’s playbook for his first score of the night as he went all the way for a layup. Jordan Walsh had back-to-back baskets with 5 quick points, Boston with the early 33-23 lead.

Boston young legs of Harper, Walsh gave the C’s a big spark late in the first quarter, the pair combined for 11 first quarter points. The Warriors were gunning all quarter, going 8-17 from three, but it was Boston with a well rounded team performance, to lead 36-32 at the first break.

Vooch hit his first shot from a corner three to start the second quarter. Gonazalez splashed home his corner triple attempt in front of the C’s bench as Boston once again had a ten-point lead. Hugo batted away a pass attempt as Boston reclaimed possession. Pritchard and Gonzalez spearheading a quick 13-2 run to start the second quarter.

Sam Hauser threaded the needle to Vooch who was rewarded for running the court for the jam as Boston had a 19-point lead in a dominant second quarter performance. Godlen State had just 2 points in the second quarter until the seven minute mark. Al Horford got whistled for throwing a stray elbow toward rookie Hugo Gonzalez. The play was reviewed first then challenged, Boston winning the challenge and regaining possession.

Brown drove with a sweet crossover and had Santos draped all over his arm to score his twelfth point of the night and get an extra from the stripe with three minutes to go in the half. Pritchard hit a long bomb from deep as Boston regained an eighteen point lead.

gettyimages-2262020940.jpg

KP hit his first three-pointer for the Warriors, but Hauser matched him with a three-pointer of his own as the Celtics were proving too much for the home team to handle behind 19 first half assists. Boston ended the half with back-to-back triples by Hauser and Pritchard as the C’s took a 23-point lead into halftime, 74-51.

Queta hit a rolling layup to start the third, the Portuguese bigman caught a pass off a bobbled ball that hit a Warrior defender’s head. Hauser drained his fourth three and Brown hit a reverse layup as they were rolling to start the second half. The C’s raced out to a 31-point lead before half the San Fran fans had even returned to their seats after halftime. JB was on triple dub alert with a 20 minutes to go in the game

Joe Mazzulla went to his bench depth with a thirty point lead at the five minute mark of the third. Pritchard, Vucevic and Harper Jr off the bench for Boston. Vuc immediately impacted game, blocking a shot and hitting a bank shot form the low block down the other end. Gonzalez entered the game and had a great drive and left hand finish with a pretty ISO dribble on a close out.

Pritchard’s splashed home his fourth triple of the night came off a JB assist as he logged a triple double with 17, 11 and 10 with two minutes to go in the third. Moody drained a pair of triples late in the quarter, yet the Celtics held onto a massive lead a quarter to go in the game, Boston up by 29 points 102-73.

Golden State cut the Boston lead back to 20 points as Joe rested the starters at the start the fourth quarter. Scheierman stopped the bleeding for Boston as the points had dried up for the visitors. Joe Mazzulla got Jaylen Brown back into the game with six minutes to go in the contest holding a 17-point lead.

Santos drained a triple to cut the lead to 14 points. Pritchard was stripped at mid court and then turned it over a second time as the Golden State crowd found their voice. It was Pritchard who made a pair fo tough contested triples as Boston hit 117 points with four minutes remaining in the game. The points dried up for Boston in the fourth as Golden State ratcheted up the pressure.

Jaylen Brown’s turnaround jumper on the bass line was his 23rd point of the night and that was enough for Boston to win the game as Golden State ran out of time to make a further run. Detroit knocked off the Knicks earlier in the evening meaning Boston moved back into second place in the East win a game cushion on New York.
