Knicks pull away from Celtics in 111-89 victory

Late in the fourth quarter Sunday, with the outcome of Celtics-Knicks decided, simultaneous “Let’s go, Pats!” chants and boos from Knicks fans echoed throughout TD Garden.

While Knicks fans enjoyed leaning into their cantankerous DNA for a moment, those boos quickly returned to cheers as the Knicks cemented a 111-89 victory over the Celtics (34-19).

The result snaps Boston’s five-game winning streak, as the Knicks (34-19) came out flying and never relinquished power.

Jalen Brunson led New York with 31 points and eight assists, Josh Hart added 19 and the Knicks shot 40 percent from 3-point range as a team.

Jaylen Brown paced Boston with 26, Baylor Scheierman added 10 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists and Derrick White contributed 19 points, but the Celtics shot just 37 percent from the floor as a team.

While the Celtics looked disorganized and flat-footed at times, this one was more so about the Knicks beating the Celtics than the Celtics losing to the Knicks. New York was the more physical, skilled and organized team.

The Knicks jumped out to a 35-24 edge through 1, as Brunson made his mark early with 15 points and four assists. New York shot 63 percent from the floor, compared to 35 percent for Boston, and got out in transition in the opening minutes.

White and Brown responded to help the Celtics slice the deficit to 60-53 at halftime, but the Knicks finished the half at 60 percent and generated a steady stream of easy looks.

Scheierman gave the Celtics a lift in the quarter, showcasing his versatility as a playmaker and rebounder. Scheierman has now totaled 40 rebounds in his last four games following a career high Sunday.

The Knicks extended the margin to 85-68 following a terrific third quarter in which they held the Celtics to just 15 points. With Neemias Queta in foul trouble, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla elected to go small with Brown at the 4 and the Knicks made them pay inside.

Hart made his presence felt in the quarter as New York turned defense into offense to seize command.

Jaylen is so tough 💪 pic.twitter.com/t0Nle7suvO

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 8, 2026

As they did two days prior against the Heat, the Celtics showed some fight; this time, however, there was no magical comeback. Scheierman buried a corner 3 to slice it to 12, then New York caught fire to pull away convincingly.

After holding their opponent to fewer than 100 points in each of the last five games, the Celtics let the Knicks get comfortable and couldn’t catch up. The game was closer than the score indicates, but the outcome was never really in doubt.

The Celtics have still won five of six, but Sunday wasn’t their best showing. New England fans will quickly forget about their shortcomings if the Patriots are able to win Super Bowl LX.

The Tape of Tonje: getting to know the style of Boston’s newest two-way rookie

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - NOVEMBER 11: John Tonje #17 of the Salt Lake City Stars drives to the basket during the game against the Santa Cruz Warriors at Delta Center on November 11, 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lost in the shuffle of a tax-ducking fire sale at the 11th hour was the acquisition of a new two-way player in rookie John Tonje.

Part of the trade that sent Chris Boucher and a 2027 second round pick to Utah, Tonje became the third player from the 2025 draft class to take one of Boston’s three two-way spots, joining Max Shulga and the now converted Amari Williams.

The 24-year-old Tonje, taken 53rd overall after a lengthy college career featuring stops at Colorado State, Missouri and Wisconsin, has been off to a good start in his pro career, averaging 18 points and 4 rebounds on 47/38/93 shooting splits in 32 G-League games with the Salt Lake City Stars.

There is a simple pleasure in diving into a newcomer’s game and his unfamiliar pro background, and today we’re going to take a quick look at the newest member of the Boston (and Maine) Celtics through a flash of his college and G-League highlights as well as one full-game breakdown with Salt Lake.

A College Standout

I won’t harp on the specifics of Tonje’s college tape, but considering these Wisconsin highlights were just a year ago, they do give us a nice launchpad into the type of player he is when he’s a primary option.

Tonje and backcourt mate John Blackwell were the only two Badgers to average double figures in shot attempts, and in his 12 shots per game, Tonje was an efficient 20-point scorer. He knocked down 46% of his shots, 39% of his threes, and got to the line seven times a night, knocking down his free throws at a cool 91% rate.

A second-team All-American, he closed his college career out with an impressive run of shotmaking performances, including a Big Ten Tournament win over UCLA where he hit all six of his threes and missed just one of his 10 shots for 26 points. In his final college game, he battled with Egor Demin and BYU in one of the NCAA Tournament’s most intense finishes, nearly carrying his team to the Sweet 16 with a 37-point outburst in a 91-89 loss.

Those 37 points marked a March Madness record in Badgers history by the way.

You’ll see plenty of it in his highlight reels, but Tonje’s first instinct is to catch and attack. He’s a natural off-ball wing that’s most comfortable finishing plays rather than setting them up, and at 6’4” and 218 pounds, Tonje presents a powerful package that he utilizes in his slashing rim attacks.

But more than just a bully, he was an excellent movement shooter and pindown aficionado. Tonje showcased serious range from beyond the arc and a constant motor that always flashed whether the ball was coming his way or not. His ability to find space as a cutter also shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Where his stock fell in the draft process was in his defensive deficiencies. While a strong player and a high-effort defender, he lacks top-end burst and lateral quickness, struggling to contain quicker assignments. His defensive instincts did not generate turnovers at a promising rate either, and even with a 6’9” wingspan, he wasn’t much of a shot-altering threat when the ball did get past him in the paint.

To be an NBA player, his ability to score the ball is his greatest calling card. So that’ll be the focus of this next section.

G-League Flashes

Any time your favorite team acquires someone new, the first place you generally want to look is their highlight packages. You want to see the absolute best they have to offer before digging a little deeper.

Lucky for us, Tonje has had quite a few scoring outbursts at the G-League level. Unlucky for us is the fact that the G-League makes it sort of difficult to find a lot of these player highlights.

To save some time, I present to you a quick highlight package consisting of his shotmaking from his three best scoring performances, which include a 34-point game on 71% shooting against the Rip City Remix, a 30-point game against the South Bay Lakers and a 29-point finish against the Valley Suns.

View Link

In our brief introduction to Tonje’s best, we see how his physicality can still be his best weapon. He drives through defenders, creates space by initiating contact, and his touch is clean when he has space to fire off jumpers. Off the catch he doesn’t have a necessarily quick release, but the shot is pure, and it’s no surprise that he’s a 38% 3-point shooter on six attempts per game.

Something worth noting is how Tonje’s shot diet has been streamlined into shots at the rim and above the break. In his last year of college, 20% of Tonje’s shots came in the mid-range, where he was a modest 40% shooter, but he’s dedicated his volume to the shots the NBA has gravitated to in the analytics-driven era. In the G-League, he’s attempted just 22 shots in the mid-range, and he hit on 11 of them.

Also worth noting is that Tonje has been a developing rebounding wing at this level. He’s had seven games with at least five rebounds or more and has achieved double-doubles on a pair of 27-point performances.

The One-Game Sample: What does it tell us?

To cap off this Tonje crash course, we’re stepping away from the highlights and into a full-game sample. Finding an entire full-game replay of a G-League contest is surprisingly difficult, so we’re watching the last nationally broadcast Salt Lake City game on Jan. 28 when they took on the South Bay Lakers.

In 33 minutes, Tonje didn’t have a particularly good shooting night, finishing 3-of-13 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line for 14 points to go with six rebounds and just one turnover. What does the eye test say though?

The most noticeable thing from this one game is that the defensive concerns from college still show up quite a bit, both in his off-ball work and in his isolation defense against quicker guards. In this case, a matchup with former first-round pick Kobe Bufkin proved difficult for Tonje, and Bufkin took advantage of their matchup twice in a close fourth quarter.

View Link

In his off-ball defense, Tonje often found himself just a beat too late in his reactions. Early in the game, he was caught ball-watching and lost his man, who nailed an open trey. Early in the third quarter after fighting around a screen, he got beat again in the process of a stunt-and-recover near the nail. And in one extended sequence that features a good shot contest, he ultimately plays a part in an easy lob when he half-heartedly tags the rim-running big with his teammate forced to play the ball after a side pick-and-roll.

View Link

On offense, tunnel vision on his drives ended in a few blocked shots and a first half without a field goal, but he was unrelenting in the second half, having more success in his drives into the paint.

He had three particularly impressive second-half finishes in traffic, starting with an isolation drive where he created space past the 3-point line with a jab step before driving through the body of his defender for a mid-range bucket. Later in the third, it’s another tunnel vision drive into three bodies, yet he takes the bump and finishes through contact for an and-one.

And in his most impressive play, he took another authoritative drive off an elbow handoff and got past the last line of defense with a tough reverse layup (you might recognize that last line of defense as former Celtics draft pick Anton Watson), something we’ve seen quite a bit of in his highlights.

View Link

It was an overall mixed bag, but a game that backs up a lot of the info we have about Tonje from his college and overall G-League clips. His defense is a major work in progress, but his confidence is unwavering when it comes to the offensive end. The man can score the rock, now we wait to see how it translates to his time in Maine, and possibly, Boston.

Celtics share major Jayson Tatum injury update

BOSTON — Jayson Tatum is practicing with the Maine Celtics on Monday as he continues to recover from an Achilles rupture he suffered last week, the Celtics shared in an official press release.

Tatum will be assigned to participate in portions of the Maine Celtics practice at the Auerbach Center this afternoon. Following this practice, Tatum will be immediately recalled to the Boston Celtics, where he will continue his rehab process. Fellow Celtics players Hugo Gonzalez and Amari Williams are joining Tatum at practice.

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 9, 2026

It’s been almost 9 months since Tatum first suffered the injury, and the Celtics have never offered a recovery timeline.

It’s not unusual for athletes to be assigned to their G-League affiliate as they near a full recovery; earlier this year, for example, LeBron James practiced with the Los Angeles Lakers’ G-League affiliate, and five days later, he made his season debut as he recovered from an offseason bout of sciatica.

Similarly, Kristaps Porzingis practiced with the G-League last fall as he rehabbed an offseason ankle surgery, and six days later, made his season debut.

That doesn’t mean that Tatum’s return is just a week away — but it does open the door for that possibility.

Last week, Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said that Tatum still has “a ways to go.”

“When it’s right, then we’ll all sit down and talk about it,” Stevens said. “There’s still no force from us. There’s no pressure from us. But there’s also not gonna be any of us saying, ‘Well, why doesn’t he just take another week?’ When he’s ready, he’s ready.”

Without Tatum, the Celtics are 34-19, owners of the Eastern Conference’s third-best net rating.

Jayson Tatum just spoke to the media at length — here’s everything he had to say

BOSTONJayson Tatum practiced with the Maine Celtics on Monday afternoon, sparking excitement that his return was around the corner. But then, on Tuesday afternoon, the Celtics star addressed the media for the first time since October and delivered the message that his participation in the G League practice should not be read into too deeply.

“It doesn’t mean I’m coming back or not,” Tatum said matter-of-factly.

The Celtics star ruptured his Achilles tendon in a playoff game on May 12th, and made clear in October he was not ruling out a return this year.

He’s just a few days away from the 9-month mark in his recovery, and, in recent weeks, the likelihood of him potentially returning seems to have shifted multiple times.

Last month, Tatum worked out in front of reporters at a shootaround in Detroit, sparking speculation that his return was near.

Then, a few weeks later, he shared on the Pivot Podcast that he had begun to have doubts regarding whether he should return this season.

“That’s something I contemplate every day,” Tatum said. “More so about the team, if or when I do come back this season, they would have played 50-some odd games without me, so they have an identity this year or things they’ve felt that has clicked for them and it’s been successful…so there’s a thought in my head that is like, how does that work? How does that look with me integrating myself off an injury…and it is a thought like ‘damn, do I come back or should I wait?’ In the last two weeks or so, I contemplate every single day.”

A few days after that, ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne confirmed that Tatum has not yet made a decision.

All the while, on the Celtics’ side, Brad Stevens confirmed that the team will not hold Tatum back if he is cleared and wants to play.

“When it’s right, then we’ll all sit down and talk about it,” Stevens said last week. “There’s still no force from us. There’s no pressure from us. But there’s also not gonna be any of us saying, ‘Well, why doesn’t he just take another week?’ When he’s ready, he’s ready.”

Derrick White, meanwhile, said it’s been great to see Tatum’s progression.

“It’s been amazing to see, obviously, all the work he’s putting in,” White said last month. “You just kind of see him being around more, and being able to do more. So that’s exciting to see, as a friend. Every day he’s been working hard, and it’s good to see all that hard work add to some more movement and more opportunities.”

What Tatum had to say as he addressed Celtics media on Tuesday

Tatum didn’t drop any major news in his first full media availability since Media Day (he also spoke to SB Nation in October). But the Celtics’ star did shed some light on the G-League practice heard around the world, overall recovery, and thoughts on the Celtics’ success this season.

On practicing with the Maine Celtics: “I’m feeling good. It was good to be a part of practice yesterday with the Maine G-League guys. Today is 39 weeks, so it’s been a long journey.”

“Had a jersey on. Just felt good to be a part of a team, and practice, go through reps, stuff like that.”

Jayson Tatum:

“I’m feeling good. It was good to be a part of practice yesterday with the Maine G-League guys. Today is 39 weeks, so it’s been a long journey. And, it’s just like the progression of rehab… it doesn’t mean I’m coming back or not.” pic.twitter.com/ZgdrIY6N2x

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 10, 2026

On whether he’s trusting his Achilles more: “I feel a little bit better today than I did yesterday — the physical, conditioning, trusting it, every day I feel a little bit better.”

On the next steps in his recovery: “More conditioning, more live things. Getting acclimated to playing 5-on-5 and contact.”

On his communications with Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, and DeJounte Murray — all stars who also suffered Achilles injuries last year: “Periodically, I talk to those guys… those kinds of guys are on a similar boat throughout this process, encouraging each other.”

On what it’s been like to watch games on the sidelines: “It’s been tough not being able to play and compete. You know how much I love this game. I love being out there. But I’ve also grown an appreciation for the game, for my teammates, and just guys around the league, sitting back and being able to watch guys take their next step, it’s been kind of cool to see.”

“I sit next to the coaches, hear their commentary, see it through the lens of the coach.”

On what his acclimation to the new-look Celtics could look like: “It might look different. I haven’t played with these guys, with this group, but we have a lot of high-IQ guys out there, and I’d like to consider myself one of those types of players. So, if that did present itself, and I did come back, we’re professionals, we’d figure it out.”

On his stated doubts regarding potentially returning: “Over 39 weeks, you have a lot of time on your hands. You think about a lot of things. Just hyper aware of what’s going on. I think it would just stem from that. Obviously, I know what I bring to the table and bring to the team. But I’m also aware that these guys have been playing extremely well. And, not to say that I would come and mess it up or anything like that. It was just kind of being vulnerable, I guess, for a moment.”

On reports he might not come back: “Still trying to figure it out. Still just going through the progressions of rehab. Not saying that I’m coming back or not. It’s all about being 100% healthy and going through the plan.”

On the addition of Nikola Vucevic to the Celtics: “Vooch is a hell of a player. Obviously, I’ve competed against him for the last 8 years, and [I’m] excited about the things that he brings to this team, different dynamics. We’re all excited to have him.”

On Jaylen Brown’s big season: “It’s been great. Even before the season, there was no doubt in my mind that he, and P [Payton Pritchard] and D-White and all these guys, I knew what they were capable of. Whenever somebody that loves the game that much, and works as hard as they do, gain more opportunity, I’m not surprised [by] what they’ve been able to accomplish. It’s been really fun to see.”

Jayson Tatum on how Jaylen Brown has responded to shouldering more responsibility this season:

“It’s been great. Even before the season, there was no doubt in my mind that he, and P [Payton Pritchard] and D-White and all these guys, I knew what they were capable of. Whenever… pic.twitter.com/4awZixNoOH

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) February 10, 2026

On how he feels the Celtics stack up against the East’s best teams: “We’ve been one of the best teams all season. And we’ll continue being one of the best teams.”

Jordan Walsh reacts to losing closest Celtics teammate at trade deadline

gettyimages-2214824008.jpg

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 16: Jordan Walsh #27 and Xavier Tillman #26 of the Boston Celtics arrive to the arena before the game against the New York Knicks during Round Two Game Six of the 2025 NBA Playoffs on May 16, 2025 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. BOSTONXavier Tillman arrived in Boston in the middle of Jordan Walsh’s rookie season. Walsh was 19 at the time, the youngest member of the squad, and Tillman almost immediately took him under his wing.

So, when Walsh rarely played throughout his first two seasons, Tillman was often in his ear. That same mentorship continued into this season, when Walsh began playing meaningful minutes for the very first time, ultimately starting 20 straight games for Boston.

But, as of Thursday, Tillman is no longer on the Celtics roster. The veteran big man was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in the final hours of the NBA’s midseason trade deadline, and Walsh is not sure who to lean on when it comes to dealing with the ups and downs of the season.

“It used to be X — X is my guy,” Walsh said. “Now I’m trying to figure out who that is. Me and JB [Jaylen Brown] are really close, so it might just end up being him, but he just wants to put me in a headlock.”

Walsh’s and Tillman’s friendship was on display throughout the year.

Earlier this season, for example, when Walsh was just beginning to break into the rotation, Tillman excitedly crashed his postgame interview. The Celtics had just defeated the Orlando Magic, and Walsh hit a big three-pointer down the stretch to help secure the victory.

“He’s the king of the lockdown,” Tillman said, grinning. “He can guard anybody. The bigs, the littles, the wings, they don’t matter. Call Jordan, he’s your guy.”

OMG Xavier Tillman just crashed Jordan Walsh's postgame interview as he was talking about his dagger three pic.twitter.com/8FNAdNNMyC

— Danielle Hobeika (@DanielleHobeika) November 10, 2025

Tillman’s leadership extended throughout the locker room.

“He’s almost become, quickly, a vet for us,” Joe Mazzulla said earlier in the season. “I’ve been very appreciative of how he’s handled just the trajectory of his role here.”

Tillman isn’t the only teammate that Walsh, and the rest of the Celtics, lost

The Celtics traded Anfernee Simons to the Chicago Bulls, Chris Boucher to the Utah Jazz, and Josh Minott to the Brooklyn Nets.

All of the losses hurt.

“[All] those guys, I got close to while they were here,” Walsh said.

After the deadline, Mazzulla said his focus was on the players’ general well-being: “It’s the time of year where you spend time worrying about the person more than the player.”

For Walsh, there is an inevitable adjustment period after having lost such a close teammate.

“It’s tough. That first game back…. me and X were like this,” Walsh said, crossing his fingers. “And so that first game back, I’m always looking for somebody to talk to, for inspo, points, or whatever it may be, and he just wasn’t there. And I was like, dang it just feels different. Everything feels different.“

Walsh is excited to reunite with one former teammate on Wednesday, when the Celtics host the Bulls for their last game ahead of the All-Star break.

Anfernee Simons, who is averaging 20 points in three games for Chicago, will return to Boston just a week after his trade.

“Fortunately, I’ll see Ant [tomorrow],” Walsh said. “We’ll have to destroy him, though. But, it’ll be good to see him again, have him back in the Garden. But missing those guys, having them gone, it definitely leaves a void in the arena.”

No better way to rebound from a tough loss than getting a dominant win against a struggling team.

After getting crushed by the Knicks on Super Bowl Sunday, the Boston Celtics took an early 20-point lead in the second quarter against the recently overhauled and undermanned Chicago Bulls and never looked back, finishing the game with a 124-105 win and Gino Time on Bob Cousy bobblehead night.

The win is Boston’s sixth victory in its last seven games and Chicago’s sixth loss in a row.

In addition to trading away Ayo Dosunmu, Coby White and Nikola Vučević at the deadline, Chicago was also missing Zach Collins, Josh Giddey, Tre Jones, Isaac Okoro, Jalen Smith and Noa Essengue, who were all injured and inactive.

The Bulls started Collin Sexton, Patrick Williams and Matas Buzelis, as well as former Celtics Guerschon Yabusele and Anfernee Simons — who scored a lackluster 7 points on 33.3% shooting from the field in his return to Boston.

Despite being listed on the Celtics’ injury report yesterday, Sam Hauser and Neemias Queta both started and played solid minutes alongside fellow starters Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and Baylor Scheierman.

Jayson Tatum was the only inactive Celtic.

Boston got off to an awkward start with a Neemias Queta post-up that resulted in a turnover, but Jaylen Brown brought a steady hand, scoring 10 of the Celtics’ first 22 points on a combination of midrange shots and three-pointers that kept the offense running.

While Boston allowed Chicago to shoot 62.5% from three-point range over the first quarter, with the Bulls’ first four attempts all falling, the Celtics won the margins early by forcing four turnovers and putting up five more shots.

A big part of that was the spark off the bench provided by Payton Pritchard, who came into the game and immediately hit a long three-pointer from the top of the key and ended the quarter with a beautiful driving shot, and Hugo Gonzalez, who drew an illegal screen on one of his first defensive plays.

The Celtics ended the first quarter with a nine-point lead, but blew the game apart with an 18-4 start to the second quarter led by Payton Pritchard, who ended the half with 16 points and only one missed shot.

The second quarter also saw Nikola Vučević and Jordan Walsh come alive.

Vučević started slow, as he was blocked on his first shot attempt and missed a wide open shot following an up-and-under move that completely lost his defender in the first quarter. However, by the end of the half, Vučević had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal on 50% shooting (4/8) from the field and 2/3 shooting from three-point range. On one play near the end of the second quarter, he had the ball at the top of the key, passed it away and ended up getting it back for an open three-pointer due to spacing created via ball movement.

Walsh scored 7 points on 3/4 shooting over the second quarter, including hitting on an and-1 where Vučević found him cutting to the rim. The energy he brought to the court also manifested in two steals by the half. One steal led to a breakaway dunk for Walsh and another led to an open Vučević three-pointer.

The Celtics rolled into the half with 72 points and a 28-point lead, the second-highest halftime lead of the season.

They spent the rest of the game on cruise control, maintaining a 20-30 point lead over the Bulls throughout the third and fourth quarters.

Over the second half, Vučević got even more run — he ended with 26 minutes played compared to 14 minutes for Neemias Queta — and played strong. He finished the game with another double-double, recording 19 points on 80% shooting (4/5) from three-point range, as well as 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks in his first game against his former team. While questions remain about his defense, his impact was felt everywhere on the offensive end of the court tonight.

Walsh also continued his energetic start and finished the game with 16 points, 3 steals and 1 block. While Baylor Scheierman started, Walsh set the tone early and was awarded for his efforts, finishing with 29 minutes played — six more than Scheierman got. He may have some chemistry brewing with Vučević, too, as the big man assisted on two of his cuts to the rim.

Payton Pritchard led the team in scoring with 26 points off the bench and finished second in assists behind Derrick White, with 8 on the night. It marked the fourth of five games he has started off the bench this season where he has scored at least 20 points.

Pritchard, Vučević and Walsh scored all 61 of the bench’s points for the night, only 2 points less than the starters scored as a whole.

Jaylen Brown continued tearing apart the Bulls’ defense in the third quarter but slowed down in the fourth when his shots stopped dropping. He clocked out before the halfway mark of the fourth quarter and finished with 24 points.

With no games left to play this week and All-Star Weekend beginning Feb. 13, the Celtics will have eight days to rest before facing Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors at 10 p.m. EST Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

Over the weekend, Ron Harper Jr. will participate in the Castrol Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday, Feb. 13. He will also play in the Kia Shooting Stars competition on Team Harper with his father, five-time champion Ron Harper Sr., and brother, San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper, on Saturday, Feb. 14.

Jaylen Brown will start for Team USA Stripes in the All-Star Game — which will feature a round-robin tournament between two teams of U.S. players and one team of international players over four 12-minute games — on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Parquet Plays : Nikola Vučević played his best game in green

gettyimages-2259691958.jpg

Nikola Vučević delivered his most complete performance as a Celtic against a familiar opponent—his former team.

Heading into the All-Star break, Vuc ensured he left a lasting impression, finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in a poised, controlled outing. It was a performance that reflected both rhythm and growing comfort within Boston’s system.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla noted postgame that Vuc “looked much more comfortable tonight,” elaborating on the specific elements that stood out to him.

Let’s break down those specifics from Mazzulla and the film that shows them.

The first thing coach mentioned was Vuc’s “pick-and-roll positioning defensively.” According to Mazzulla, it “was good, really good.” In my preview of what Vuc could potentially bring to Beantown, I noted that he has obvious defensive shortcomings, but that I didn’t see a player incapable of moving his feet and at least being neutral on that end. Tonight, Vuc consistently placed himself in the right spots, maintaining proper depth in coverage, containing the ball handler, and recovering efficiently to his assignment. His discipline in those moments prevented driving lanes from opening and disrupted the timing of the Bulls offense.

Here, he gets close to the level of the screen touching the screener for just a moment before sinking into drop coverage. While Payton Pritchard chases back into the play, Vuc positions himself perfectly in between the ball handler (Matas Buzelis) and the roller (Nick Richards) as Buzelis drives. Vuc stays patient and when Buzelis goes to the Pinoy step, he just puts his hands up and forces a miss.

Next, Richards shows impressive quickness, getting out of the screen faster than Vuc expected. After that, Vuc displays his own foot speed, swiftly backpedaling into proper positioning. This allows him to meet Rob Dillingham at the rim, forcing a low pass that is ultimately bobbled. Vuc then plays solid post defense leading to a miss and a Mazzulla clap of approval.

Vuc also did a nice job understanding what proper “pick-and-roll positioning defensively” meant for different players. Former Celtic Anfernee Simons is a much more dangerous three-point threat than his teammates, and the Celtics played him like it.

The last two clips we saw him playing drop coverage, but you see the difference in aggression here when Simons is the handler. Vuc being up so high takes away the pullup three which forces a drive. Simons ends up having to pass and a good contest by Hugo ends the possession

Vuc showing up near the arc again negates the threat of a pullup three and impedes Simon’s path. He then picks up his dribble and throws a turnover.

Vuc had more solid defensive possessions than just a few in this game.

Immediately after highlighting Vuc’s pick and roll defense, Mazzulla said, “Then offensively the reads were good,” and I totally agree. Since Vuc has been in green, his passing has really flashed. His ability to process the floor quickly, whether operating from the top of the key, short roll, or post, has added a connective element to the offense. His willingness to make the extra read has helped maintain rhythm within the half-court sets.

In fact, third-year wing Jordan Walsh has already expressed how much he enjoys playing alongside Vuc, a testament to the big man’s feel and unselfish approach.

“Like Vuc? I love playing with Vuc, it’s great. Every time he catches the ball I’m just cutting and he’s looking every time so it’s like great,” Walsh explained.

It’s easy to see why Walsh thinks this way to say the least.

Here Vuc’s unselfishness is rewarded. Derrick White rejects his screen forcing two on the ball starting perfect Mazzulla Ball. Walsh smartly cuts even before Vuc gets the ball to make the defender at the top of the key choose who to step to. Walsh doing that then creates another 2-on-1 with him and Jaylen Brown in the corner. Vuc hits Walsh on the cut and the ball just pops all the way back to the big man for the open three.

After setting the screen, Vuc kicks it out to Walsh for an open look, though the shot doesn’t fall. The possession stays alive, and when the ball finds him again, he immediately threads another pass to Walsh, this time setting him up for an and-one finish. These two seem like they like each other.

Next on the list is the “early offense reads,” Vuc seems to be understanding more, according to Mazzulla.

I’ve covered at length the screening actions that have fueled Boston’s early offense success this season, most notably their “Veer,” “Flare,” and “Wide” screens. Those concepts have become foundational to how the Celtics generate advantages before the defense knows what hits them.

Sam Hauser is scorching hot rn. Celtics have found a ton of success on these Veer Screens after defensive rebounds. Garza has been doing a great job sprinting into these and hitting hard. Hauser 7/7 from 3 pic.twitter.com/gZ4aFxGwYd

Wide action after a defensive rebound had been a staple for the Cs getting them early offense opportunities. This and Veer Screens pic.twitter.com/2n21D2tbOZ

— NikNBA🏀 (@NIKNBAYT) January 2, 2026

Given the contrast in skillset and play style between Vuc and bigs like Neemias Queta and Luka Garza, I wondered if this aspect would take a hit when he joined.

1 thing I believe will be an evident difference between Nik Vuc and our current bigs is movement speed after DRebs and in the half court

We see Queta and Garza flying up the court sprinting into screens and Vuc most times elects to trail (more thoughts in comments) pic.twitter.com/tf23PV05h7

— NikNBA🏀 (@NIKNBAYT) February 4, 2026

Queta and Garza rank among the league’s most effective screeners, and unlike Vuc, their primary offensive responsibility is to generate advantages for others. Vuc has traditionally been a focal point scorer, so I was just curious of how he would blend his style with the style of our bigs. This game was the best I’ve seen that blend.

Here he starts the Wide action setting that screen for Brown allowing him to stop and pop for the midrange.

Then he sets the Veer for Brown, getting him a mismatch in the post and delivering it to him for a bucket. You can see the learning curve still being there as he was going to set the on-ball screen until White pointed him in the right direction.

All of those elements came together on multiple possessions as Vuc has some really good sequences.

Lastly, the spacing and scoring he provides really adds a new wrinkle to an already great offense. He shot 4/5 from three and drew four fouls due to switches.

Nikola Vucevic’s performance against his former team was more than just stats; it was a showcase of how he is evolving within the Celtics’ system. From disciplined pick-and-roll defense to court vision that elevates his teammates, Vuc demonstrated a seamless balance between his natural scoring ability and the team-oriented style that Boston demands from its bigs.

The chemistry he’s already building with teammates hints at the kind of impact he can have as Boston pushes forward after the All-Star break.

Which potential 1st round team scares you the most?

imagn-27434052.jpg

The NBA All Star break is a great time to take stock, look at the standings, and think ahead to the playoffs. A lot of things could still change between now and the first round, but let’s take a quick look around.

The Celtics are currently in 2nd place, half a game ahead of the New York Knicks and 1.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Cavs. The Detroit Pistons have a healthy 5.5 game lead for 1st place, so the Celtics are probably looking at a seed in the 2-4 range.

On the opposite end of the potential playoff bracket are the usual suspects vying for a play-in berth. The Bulls, Hawks, and Heat are all looking at the Charlotte Hornets like “hey, who’s the new kid?”

The candidates for a tough 1st round matchup would likely come from the middle group of teams.

Toronto Raptors – The Raps have the look of a typical “tough-out” team. They have length at a number of positions, versatile defenders, and players that could get hot in a hurry (Ingram, Barrett). They don’t seem to have the pieces necessary for a long run, but they could make things interesting in a 1st round series.

Philadelphia 76ers – The future is now in Philly with Tyreese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe creating the “VJ Maxx” backcourt. Joel Embiid is starting to look like his old self, and while I have jokes for days about his playoff performances against the Celtics, we don’t have Al Horford around anymore. They should also have a very well rested Paul George for the playoffs (in theory).

Orlando Magic – On paper the Magic should be a better team than they’ve been on the court. Banchero, Wagner, and Bane is a pretty nice top 3. Suggs, Black, and Wendell Carter Jr. seems like a solid rotation as well. However, injuries and fit have limited the success of this team thus far. Still, that doesn’t mean they couldn’t find the right buttons to push in any given 1st round series. They’d be out for revenge after last year’s 1st round loss as well.

Personally, I don’t fear the play-in teams all that much, but it is worth noting that the Hornets have been one of the hottest teams in the league for a couple of months now. If they keep this up they’ll play themselves into a top-6 finish.

So what do you think? I’m sure most of us are pretty confident in the Celtics ability to win the first round, especially with a reasonably healthy Jayson Tatum. But which team would make you the most concerned if they land in our bracket?

Rising Stars Ron Harper Jr. quiet in All-Star Weekend stints

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 13: Dylan Harper #2 of Team Melo is defended by Ron Harper Jr. #13 of Team Austin in the Rising Stars Game during 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend at Intuit Dome on February 13, 2026 in Inglewood, California. Boston Celtics two-way player Ron Harper Jr. appeared twice in the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities, but fell short of leaving a mark on either competition.

The 25-year-old participated in the Castrol Rising Stars mini-tournament on Friday and the Kia Shooting Stars competition on Saturday.

Harper Jr. started at shooting guard for Team Austin in the first game of the three-game mini-tournament, across from his brother, San Antonio Spurs rookie Dylan Harper, who started at forward for Team Melo.

While Ron Harper Jr. logged the second-most minutes of any player on Team Austin, he finished the game as its only scoreless player.

The G League star shot 0-5 from the field and 0-2 from three point range, and spent the majority of his time on the offensive end uninvolved and standing in the corner without the ball.

Both three point attempts were particularly rough. One came early in the game, when Harper Jr. dribbled into a shot and got blocked. The other attempt came on the second-to-last play of the game, when he took a shot several feet behind the perimeter with plenty of time left on the shot clock… and missed everything.

Dylan Harper got the ball on the next possession, took it at his brother, made him dance with a couple moves, and sunk the game-winning shot.

— Ian Inangelo (@iinangelo) February 14, 2026

Nevertheless, it wasn’t all negative for Harper Jr. While his stat line was not glamorous, he did a lot of the unsung dirty work for Team Austin.

He posted a team-high 7 rebounds, including 3 offensive boards, and 2 assists, displaying excellent effort while battling in the trenches. He got a good tip that led to another rebound he was uncredited for, recovered a ball lost by one of his teammates, and got the game started by assisting on an alley-oop dunk.

Since Team Austin lost the game, it did not advance in the mini-tournament and Harper Jr. did not get another chance to shine.

During the Kia Shooting Stars competition, Harper Jr. and his team — which consisted of himself, his brother, Dylan, and his father, Ron Harper Sr., as well as celebrity passer 2 Chainz — also failed to progress past the first round.

The competition had four teams of three players shoot from seven spots, from a layup to an elbow jumper to a deep three-point shot from the logo, in an attempt to rack up as many points as possible over 70 seconds.

Team Harper finished the first round in third place, with 18 total points. Ron Jr. hit 3 of his 9 shots for 7 points, while his brother and father finished with 9 and 2 points, respectively.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 14, 2026

They were in second place following their performance, but Team Knicks — the eventual winner — came next and immediately unseated Team Cameron for the top spot in the competition, pushing Team Harper to third.

Only the top 2 teams made the final round, so Team Harper was left behind and Harper Jr.’s participation in All-Star Weekend came to an end.

The Celtics’ next participant in the festivities will be Jaylen Brown, who will start for Team USA Stripes in tomorrow’s All-Star Game, which will feature a four-game tournament between two teams of U.S. players and one team of international players.

Team USA Stripes will play in games 2 and 3, which are slated to begin at 5:55 p.m. and 6:25 p.m. EST. The two teams with the best records will advance to an All-Star Championship game at 7:10 p.m. EST. The games can be viewed on NBC or streamed on Peacock.

Which Celtic will make his 1st All Star game next season?

imagn-25591428.jpg

Mar 5, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; For the first time in Boston Celtics history, two teammates scored over 40 points in a game, Boston Celtics guard Derrick White (9), 41 points, and guard Payton Pritchard (11) ,43 points as they joke around after their win over the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden. This year’s NBA All Star game will be Jaylen Brown’s 5th. Jayson Tatum has been in 6 himself. Newcomer Nikola Vucevic appeared in two.

If they are back at normal health next season, I would expect to see Brown and Tatum back in the game. But will there be a 3rd member of the team to join them? And if so, who might that be?

The obvious choice would be Derrick White, who has been knocking on the door of the honor for a few years running. He’s clearly deeply valuable to this team, but too often his best attributes are subtle and don’t get the attention that they deserve. His shooting touch was a bit off early this season, so that probably doomed his chances. Perhaps a hot shooting winter next season could earn him a spot.

Next up is Payton Pritchard, who has thrived now as both a starter and reserve for the Celtics. He scores at multiple levels despite his comparatively diminutive size. He takes care of the ball and has a knack for getting buckets when the team most needs it (in particular at the buzzer in dramatic fashion).

Or could someone else leapfrog both of them? Neemias Queta perhaps? Sam Hauser? Perhaps one of the young wings takes a major step forward. What about Hugo Gonzalez? I know these are all long, long shots, but you never know. Ok, any of those guys sniffing the All Star game next season is a bit of a reach next season, but what about in a few years?

So what do you think? Who’s at the All Star game next season?

Must Cs: Jayson Tatum teases return with “The Quiet Work”

During Sunday’s All-Star Game festivities, Jayson Tatum and the NBA on NBC dropped this trailer:

Per the YouTube summary, the five-part documentary:

For the first time in his life, the game that defined Jayson Tatum was taken away by an Achilles injury. The five-part docuseries THE QUIET WORK follows Jayson through the most challenging stretch of his career as he fights to return to the NBA. From the locker room to the hospital room, through rehab and recovery, and ultimately back to the court, this is the unseen side of his journey and the work no one ever witnesses.

Until now.

Paired with the news this weekend that the Celtics’ March 1st home game against visiting Philadelphia 76ers was rescheduled from 6 pm to primetime at 8 pm and air on NBC, the speculation that Tatum is set return soon seems more and more like a reality. He had previously said that his first game back would be at TD Garden.

Earlier in the week, President of Basketball Operations threw some cold water on the rising expectations that JT was just around the corner from stepping back on the floor, saying, “(It’s) best for Jayson Tatum to come back when he’s 110% healthy, he’s fully clear by everybody that matters in that decision and he’s got great peace of mind and ready to do it. That’s it. That’s the objective and that’s what we’re gonna stick with,” Stevens said.

“When we feel 100%, it’ll be his, it’ll be a group getting together and talking, but I think our medical people are really good, I think his doctors are really good, so we’re gonna listen to them, he’s listening to them. I think he and Nick have had an amazing work ethic through this recovery, and when it’s right, then we’ll all sit down and talk about it, but there’s still no force from us, there’s no pressure from us, but there’s also not going to be any of us saying, well, why don’t you take another week? When he’s ready, he’s ready.”

Then, Tatum’s rehab moved to controlled 5-on-5 including a practice with the Maine squad with Hugo Gonzalez and Amari Williams in tow.

After the workout, Tatum said, “It doesn’t mean I’m coming back or not.” There may still not be a definitive decision made, but all signs — the tea leaves, the media push, the physical ramp up — point to Tatum return on the horizon.

Derrick White doesn’t need to make shots to be elite

gettyimages-2260636150.jpg

BOSTON, MA - FEBRUARY 11: Derrick White #9 and Jordan Walsh #27 of the Boston Celtics high five during the game against the Chicago Bulls on February 11, 2026 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Derrick White is testing the validity of the old NBA adage that it is a “make or miss league.”

Despite enduring a career-worst scoring efficiency season, he is still grading out as one of the league’s most impactful players. This should not be possible. Even in the analytics era, we should still be able to cling to the concept that putting the orange ball in the basket is the key indicator of how good a player and a team is.

However, both Derrick White and the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics are, so far, successfully bending the reality of that widely accepted truth.

Efficient scoring is typically a staple of the Derrick White Experience. Each of the past three seasons, White has posted a true shooting percentage of 60%, ranking him 24th among guards from the 2022-2023 season to the 2024-2025 season. This season, efficient scoring has elluded him. D White is in the midst of a 52% true shooting season, which would have placed him at 156th among guards over the same three season stretch. 52% is an abhorrent number. But it has not mattered when it comes to impacting winning.

There is no perfect “catch all” metric, however a widely accepted one is Estimated Plus Minus (EPM) that Dunks and Threes created. Again, not perfect, but it typically spits out the best guys at the top of the league each year without many outliers. For example, last season’s top-10 players were: Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, Steph Curry, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton. This season, despite his ice-cold shot-making, Derrick White ranks 11th in EPM. So how is D White doing it? The answer is simple: he’s doing everything else at an extremely high level. Shot blocking, playmaking, rebounding, and of course, making Derrick White plays.

Let’s quickly zoom in on just how impactful Derrick White has been for the Celtics this season. When White is on the court, the Celtics have a +11 net rating. This would rank them second in the NBA, slightly behind OKC, who currently have an +11.5 net rating. When Derrick White is off the court, the Celtics have a +1.7 net rating. This would rank the team at 14th in the NBA. That is a monstrous on/off swing of 9.3 points per 100 possessions. For context, let’s compare that on/off swing to the elite of the elite:

  • Nikola Jokic – 15.2
  • Shai Gilgeous Alexander – 9.9
  • Cade Cunningham – 7.3
  • Luka Doncic – 6.6
  • Kevin Durant – 4.6
  • Anthony Edwards – 0.3

Derrick White is putting up superstar numbers. More accurately, he’s putting up superstar NBA nerd numbers.

Derrick White agrees. On the most recent episode of Derrick’s podcast “White Noise”, his co-host, Alex Welsh, shared a message that White sent to their group chat.

“I don’t have All Star numbers, just All-Star impact.”

Derrick White is correct. He impacts the game at not just an All-Star level, but an All-NBA level. Sadly, White’s cold shooting likely cost him his first All-Star appearance.

Now that we have established the level at which Derrick White impacts winning, let’s examine how he’s doing it. It starts on the defensive end, and it starts with White being the best shot-blocking guard since Dwyane Wade. White is currently averaging 1.4 blocks per game. There are three guards in the history of the sport who have averaged at least 1.4 blocks per game: Michael Jordan (twice), Tracy McGrady, and Derrick White. Even Dwyane Wade reached only 1.3 blocks per game in 2008. And if we’re being honest, T-Mac is six-foot-eight, hardly a guard. In a vacuum, Derrick White providing center-like rim protection is mind-boggling.

View Link

Now, when you put it in the context of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics, you start to understand why advanced analytics are head over heels for Derrick White. While Neemias Queta is doing a wonderful job protecting the rim this season, as soon as he goes to the bench, the Celtics do not have a traditional rim protector. Luka Garza has been a revelation for the Celtics, but he would never be mistaken for a rim protector. Neither would the recently acquired Nikola Vučević.

There have also been large stretches of the season when Joe Mazzulla has opted for no big men on the court. Enter Derrick White. Opposing offensive players are shooting 5.1% fewer shots at the rim when Derrick White is on the court. That puts White in the 97th percentile. That number indicates that players are deterred from going to the rim when Derrick White is out there. Not quite in a Victor Wembanyama way, but in a Derrick White way. When opponents actually challenge Derrick White at the rim, they are shooting 10.4% worse than they typically would. For context, Rudy Gobert is currently forcing opponents to shoot 10.1% worse at the rim. There is no need for a traditional rim protector when you have Derrick White. White has been comfortably the best guard defender in the league this season and has a case for the most valuable defender as well.

However, the individual scoring efficiency has not been there for Derrick White this season, but he is still helping drive an elite offense. One of the tenets of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics is taking care of the basketball. Derrick White ranks in the 90th percentile in turnover percentage (while having a career high in usage). Not only does White do an excellent job of not turning the ball over, he also excels at generating assists. Derrick is generating 14.2 potential assists per 100 possessions, which places him in the 95th percentile. It feels as if there are infinite ways D White pushes things forward on offense for the Celtics. The team plays faster with Derrick on the court; their two-point field goal percentage is higher, and they generate more shots at the rim. Derrick White is the skeleton key that unlocks every lineup he finds himself in.

View Link

If a player is going to get traded, they should try to get traded to Derrick White’s team. He will make them feel right at home. Welcome to TD Garden, Vuc.

The last piece of Derrick White’s game that rounds out his superstar impact, is the Derrick White plays. These plays are unquantifiable. Know in your heart that these plays are the final infinity stone in Derrick White’s infinity gauntlet.

View Link

A superhero analogy is the only analogy applicable because the only explanation for Derrick being able to steal this ball is that he’s actually Spider-Man.

Derrick White is a microcosm of the 2025-2026 Boston Celtics. The Celtics have a true shooting percentage of 57.9% this season. That puts them smack bang in the middle of the league at 15th. Meanwhile the Celtics rank second in offensive efficiency. Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Co. are figuring out how to be an elite basketball team without being an elite shot-making team. Don’t turn the ball over, protect the rim, make the right play, crash the glass, and be willing to die on the court every night.

When do you think Jayson Tatum is going to make his season debut? (daily topic)

For what it is worth, Jayson Tatum has yet to make any announcement about his return to the court this season. He has not ruled out the possibility that he could miss the entire season. That makes sense because any number of setbacks could move his timeline back in an abundance of caution.

However, all outward signs seem to indicate that he’s gearing up for a return in the near future. Some recent news indicates that NBC will be airing a documentary on his comeback journey. In addition, many have speculated about the league’s decision to move the March 1st game against Philadelphia into primetime on NBC. Of course there are other, non-Tatum reasons to flex the schedule, and it doesn’t mean it will be his debut.

So I thought I’d throw this topic out. Keeping in mind that he has said in the past that he wants to return in a home game, when do you think he’ll return?

Here’s a quick look at the schedule coming up:

  • Feb 19 – 25: One long road trip out West, with games against the Warriors, Lakers, Suns, and Nuggets
  • Feb 27: Home against Brooklyn
  • Mar 1: Home against Philadelphia
  • Mar 2: Away at Milwaukee
  • Mar 4: Home against Charlotte
  • Mar 6: Home against Dallas
  • Mar 8 – 12: Road trip to Cleveland, San Antonio, and OKC

So let us know in the comments, when do you think he’ll return?

I promise I haven’t completely run out of topics to discuss. At least not yet. I just wanted to see how you like these daily topics and if there are ways I could be improving them.

Note that I don’t think I can keep this up forever. My goal is to finish out the month of February doing daily topics and then maybe shift back to a weekly thing (I still like the headline Topic Tuesday – even if that means forcing myself to write on Mondays).

So I’m looking to you to give me ideas and feedback. Think of it as an open mailbag, except instead of answering your questions, I’ll share your questions with the rest of the community. So basically, I’m like the guy in Office Space who brings the specs from the customers to the engineers (and doesn’t actually do anything of use). “I am good at dealing with people. Can’t you understand that?” I digress.

Do you want questions about specific players? Team general questions? NBA questions? Off topic questions?

So hit me up with some Celtics questions that I can then turn around and hit you with!

Cheers to commentor 1130PAR for suggesting this topic. Keep ‘em coming!

We Celtics fanatics consume a ridiculous volume of Boston Celtics content and the large majority of the game coverage is fed to us by NBC Sports Boston as the Regional Sports Network for the team. So much so that they become like part of the family.

I have tremendous respect for the work that these individuals put into the coverage and appreciate their efforts. Just like the players, however, there are ups and downs and learning curves for everyone. So give us your thoughts on the job that they are doing.

  • Brian Scalabrine and Drew Carter have the unenviable job of following legends Mike and Tommy (no last names needed). With that said, they’ve developed their own cadence and voice over the years.
  • Abby Chin has been a been a popular, long-time sideline reporter for the team (which included a brief departure due to budget cuts).
  • Eddie House, Tom Giles, Chris Forsberg, Kayla Burton, and Michael Holley others serve as Studio analysts and hosts.
  • Behind the scenes there are countless people working on the look, feel, content, and flow of the coverage.

So how are they doing? What kind of feedback would you want to give them? What would you like to see more or less of in their coverage?
