CelticsBlog player preview: this is Luka Garza’s best chance of his career

gettyimages-2201950813.jpg

There have been a lot of cries for the Celtics to add another center to their roster.

Charles Bassey played well in Summer League. So many Celtics fans, including myself, wanted them to sign him, but he signed with the Hawks last week. There have also been Anfernee Simons for Nikola Vucevic trade rumors for a while now, but Boston hasn’t done a whole lot at the position.

They clearly like Neemias Queta and they did drafted Amari Williams in the 2nd round. Yet, they are still very thin at the position. One guy the team did add via free agency is former Pistons and Timberwolves big man Luka Garza to a 2-year deal. In what is a very thin center room, Garza now has his best opportunity to carve out a consistent role in the NBA.

Garza can score the ball. For his career, he has been great around the rim, shooting 64% on shots around the rim, according to StatMuse. However, if we look behind the curtain a little more, according to Cleaning the Glass, in 133 non-garbage time minutes played last season in Minnesota, Garza shot 54% on twos, which ranked in the 29th percentile for big men. His effective field goal percentage, which adjusts for three-pointers being worth more than two-pointers, was 46% a season ago, just in the 8th percentile for big men.

He didn’t shoot the three well last season, hitting just 10-of-36, just 27.8%. That isn’t enough attempts for us to draw any conclusions of course, but while the Celtics will work on his three-pointer, they shouldn’t count on it developing. He doesn’t take corner threes, just 11 attempts from both corners for his career, so if he is going to be a shooter, it will likely come from above the break. Maybe Boston spaces him in the corner more often but that is an easy place for teams to cheat off of and make it harder for the Celtics to play in the paint.

Consider that 133 minutes is not big enough sample to draw any sort of conclusions about any player. For comparison, Xavier Tillman played 155 ‘non-garbage time’ minutes last season and it felt like he never played. Garza just never got on the court for Minnesota last season.

For his career, Garza has played 978 regular season minutes over four NBA seasons and that includes ‘garbage time.’ How is he going to adjust to playing a bigger role? A season ago, Queta played 863 minutes. I am assuming Garza is going to be in that range because, again, the Celtics don’t have a ton of options at center. Of course, he has played big minutes in college and the G-League but those levels are not the NBA. How will his body react to a full season of NBA minutes?

His defense has been an issue, too. While he is a good offensive rebounder, grabbing 15% of his teams misses, which is the 96th percentile. However, his defensive rebounding is bad, ranking last in the NBA a season ago in offensive rebounding percentage according to Cleaning the Glass, which had him at 5.7%. He also fouls too much, fouling on 5.6% of plays last season, ranking in the 7th percentile.

Garza is too often out of position, which leads to offensive rebounds, and jumping at the first sign of a shot fake, which leads to him fouling. He also lacks physicality on box-outs as there are times where guys are able to get a rebound by going threw him to get to the ball. These are things that can, and need to, be corrected.

There are areas to Garza’s defense that can’t be corrected. This isn’t Luke Kornet where he is 7-foot-1 and his defense can be unlocked when he realizes that. Garza is 6’10” and lacks athleticism so he won’t ever be a great rim protector and he also lacks the foot speed to switch on to shifty guards. I just am not sure how he is going to be able to survive, much less thrive, on the defensive side of the floor.

Luka Garza has been in the NBA for four seasons now, over those years, he has played in just 978 minutes. He has never had a chance to prove he is a rotation level guy. Well, now he has one in Boston, a team that saw something in him that they like and think they can unlock in him.

Celtics officially add Jalen Bridges and Kendall Brown to training camp

upscalemedia-transformed-1.jpeg

The Boston Celtics have agreed to deals with Jalen Bridges and Kendall Brown according to Michael Scotto of the Athletic.

Bridges is a 24-year-old, 6-foot-8 wing who went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft after spending two collegiate seasons at West Virginia followed by two more at Baylor. In his final year with the Bears, he delivered a solid season, averaging 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal per game while posting 46/41/82 shooting splits.

Shortly after going undrafted, Bridges signed a two-way contract with the Phoenix Suns. He spent the majority of the 2024–25 season developing in the G League, where he appeared in 41 games for the Valley Suns. There, he averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal, with shooting splits of 42% from the field, 39% from beyond the arc, and 80% from the line.

In four games at the Las Vegas Summer League, Bridges averaged 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game, shooting 44% from the field but just 30% from three. While his overall numbers were somewhat inconsistent, he closed out the event with a strong 16-point performance in his final outing, likely showing enough to convince the Celtics that he’s worth a closer look heading into training camp.

Brown is a 6-foot-7, 22-year-old wing who was selected 48th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2022 NBA Draft after one season at Baylor. During his lone college campaign, he averaged 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game on 58/34/69 shooting splits. Brown spent his first two seasons with the Pacers, primarily developing with their G League affiliate. He later signed a two-way contract with the Brooklyn Nets, where he continued his journey in the G League ranks.

He really impressed with the Long Island Nets last season averaging 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals on 54/38/78 shooting splits. In Summer League for the Celtics, he averaged 8 pts and 2 rebs and while he didn’t shoot a ton, he was really efficient when he did putting up 69/75/80 shooing splits.

Moving forward, both Bridges and Brown are likely to be viewed as developmental 3-and-D prospects. Bridges, with his slightly taller frame and more consistent shooting track record, currently projects as the more polished perimeter threat. However, Brown’s eye-popping athleticism adds an intriguing dimension to his game and gives him upside that could set him apart if he continues to develop.

The expectation is that both players will have the opportunity to compete during training camp for a potential two-way contract or a spot with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate. Maine seems like the more likely option, given that the Celtics have all of their two-way spots filled.

If that does happen, the Celtics appear poised to field a strong G-League team on paper featuring several prospects who could eventually be on the big club or become projects for other teams.

CelticsBlog player preview: Derrick White steps into the spotlight

2206888065.jpg

In an effort to capture his role and impact for the Celtics, I’ve compared Derrick White to many things: a shapeshifter, basketball chameleon, White Dwarf Star. This season, with White set to take on a new form, his star will shine even brighter.

Boston had the talent — and the pecking order — to let White lurk in the shadows a bit. His offensive load could comfortably flow up and down depending on the situation. There were scoring explosions where the offense ran through him, and nights where he picked his spots with care on the way to a smooth 16 points.

That versatility is part of what makes White so unique and impactful. But with Jayson Tatum down, his versatile backcourt mate gone to blaze a new trail, and a 7’3 unicorn shipped to Atlanta, it’s now White’s turn in the spotlight.

As the interim Robin to Jaylen Brown’s Batman, White should effectively be the unquestioned second option. He’ll have the ball in his hands more than ever, and should be primed for a significant bump in production.

Last season, White’s 12.6 FGA per game was tied for the most of his career. It was also the 4th most on the Celtics, and put him 57th in the NBA. While Boston’s new additions and internal development will vie for shots, White is clearly at the front of the line for a promotion.

Of the 34 players who averaged 20+ points per game last season, only one — Austin Reaves — took fewer than 15 field goal attempts per game. At minimum, White should hit that threshold easily. With anywhere near his usual efficiency, he can easily surpass 20 PPG for the first time in his career.

It’s easier to make these projections than it is to fulfill them, but the playoffs offered a good look at how effortless it is for him to soak up more responsibility. He finished Boston’s two rounds last postseason averaging 18.8 PPG on 13.4 FGA, and delivered statement 30-point games in both matchups.

There will be off nights and growing pains, but allowing White the freedom to keep pushing his limits as a player is incredibly valuable at this stage in his career. He’s been on a constant upward trend since arriving in Boston, and now he has an opportunity to climb another rung in the NBA’s hierarchy.

With his defensive prowess well documented and respected nationally — even globally — White could force his way into the All-Star conversation with the boost of additional touches.

Boston needs this leap from White to steady them after a summer of change. If he can carry himself like a true second option, it eases the burden on Brown and creates a trickle-down effect for the rest of the roster. As White himself has benefited from, having a firm No. 1 and No. 2 lets everyone else slide naturally between different roles. For a Celtics team searching for contributors in a transitional year, that clarity is invaluable.

This is White’s moment to fully explore a new role and more responsibility. With the green light to create, he has the chance to expand his scoring arsenal and push himself in ways not typically afforded to established vets. White’s consistency — staying healthy, making smart decisions, and maintaining his two-way impact — gives the Celtics the flexibility to trust him night-to-night while others learn how they fit.

This expanded role gives White leeway to refine key parts of his game while adding new layers, too. Facing tougher defensive attention will push him to find different ways to generate offense. White has historically been deferential in nature, and comfortable conceding for the betterment of the team. This season is about leaning further into the fact that the Celtics benefit if he gets a bit more selfish in his approach.

2183798586.jpg

When Tatum returns and White slides back into his complementary role, this experience should leave him an even more confident and dangerous player — one capable of defining his own impact on both ends of the floor.

He’ll carry lessons from the expanded responsibility, like how to handle more restrictive coverages, when to take over a game, and how to balance high-volume creation with efficiency.

The basketball shapeshifter is about to transform again, and it might just fuel the best season of his career.

CelticsBlog player preview: the road ahead of Amari Williams

upscalemedia-transformed.png

On Draft Night, the Boston Celtics traded the 32nd overall pick in exchange for selections 46 and 57, along with two future second-round picks. When their turn came again at No. 46, they selected Amari Williams, a 7-foot center from Kentucky. The 23-year-old averaged 11 pts, 8.5 rebs, 3.2 asts, and 1.2 blks on 56/25/62 splits last season after transferring from Drexel where he won two CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Getting Williams that deep into the draft was a huge win to me because he has a very unique skill set.

Mike Zarren, the Celtics’ Vice President of Basketball Operations and Team Counsel, described Williams as “one of the best passing big men in college for a long time,” and the numbers back that claim up. As a Wildcat, Williams posted a 24.7% assist rate, placing him in the 99th percentile among players at his position. He was, in many ways, the engine of the Wildcats’ offense, as reflected in his 26.9% usage rate. Whether operating from the post, the top of the key, or the elbow, Williams consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to read the floor.

In a post-draft press conference, Brad Stevens reflected on the Celtics’ playoff loss to the Knicks, noting that what stood out to him “more than anything was when we got stagnant and played without pace.” He followed up by saying, “we’re gonna try to address some of that.” Williams appears to fit that directive. He has shown the ability to grab a defensive rebound and immediately initiate the offense or even take it coast-to-coast himself.

In addition to his passing, Williams ranked in the 99th percentile in both defensive rebound percentage (29.7%) and free throw rate (74.4%). While Williams shot just 62% from the free-throw line in college, there were encouraging signs of improvement during Summer League play, where he went 9-for-10 from the stripe. For a 7-footer, excelling in playmaking, rebounding, and drawing contact provides a strong foundation to build upon.

Defensively, I think Amari Williams is solid, too. He dominated at Drexel, once again earning two DPoY awards, but I didn’t think he was at that level as a defender. His year at Kentucky was more of how I’d view him. He averaged 2.0 blocks per game over his final three seasons at Drexel, before that number dipped to 1.2 last season.

Based on his college and Summer League performances, I’d classify Williams primarily as a drop coverage big, though he has shown the ability to switch on occasion. It’s not always smooth, and I wouldn’t recommend frequent switching at this stage, but he has demonstrated flashes of being able to stay in front of NBA-level guys. That said, I believe he could benefit from getting leaner and improving his lateral quickness to become more comfortable and effective in those situations.

The main weakness for Williams is putting the ball in the basket. He shot 56% from two-point range (career high) and 46% in the paint at Kentucky — 67% at the rim is slightly better but all these percentages are low for a center. He currently poses no threat from beyond the arc, and overall, his lack of touch is evident. Developing at least a reliable push shot would go a long way in unlocking more of his offensive potential as teams might decide to not guard him closely.

That said, I do believe he was somewhat miscast as a shot creator at Kentucky, which likely contributed to his inefficiency.

As I mentioned earlier, Williams was the focal point of Kentucky’s offense, with a significant portion of his touches coming in the post. While I really liked when he operated as a playmaker from that area, he was also frequently relied upon to be a primary post scorer and that is NOT where I believe he’ll make his living at the next level.

His post game isn’t polished enough to translate effectively at the NBA level at this point. Williams would occasionally flash some touch on hook shots, but more often than not, he relied on his strength to overpower defenders in the post. My expectation is that, whether in the G League or eventually with the big club, his offensive role will be simplified, primarily serving as a roll man when scoring. This should naturally reduce both the volume and difficulty of his shot attempts, ideally resulting in more efficient scoring numbers.

He shot 44% at Summer League, but there was an outlier game where he shot 3-of-10. He didn’t have the best summer outing, but his last game was really encouraging. Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 6 pts, 8 rebs, and 4 asts despite only playing the first half. He was given more of an opportunity to initiate actions, and it really paid off.

It took longer than expected, but Williams eventually signed a two-way contract with the Celtics. My expectation is that he’ll spend most of the season in Maine, though injuries can quickly shift those plans. If he does see regular season minutes, he has the tools to contribute as a screen-setter and passer. I also trust that Joe Mazzulla will have a plan to effectively space the floor around a non-shooting big, as he’s successfully done in the past.

To earn and keep those minutes, Williams will need to prove he can hold his own defensively and be consistent on the glass. Ultimately, I think his rookie season could follow a trajectory similar to Baylor Scheierman’s last year which consisted of a slow start in the G League, showing little in limited garbage-time minutes, but gradually finding his rhythm towards the end of the year.

I like Williams as a prospect and hope that he does well if given an opportunity.

CelticsBlog player preview: can Chris Boucher become the new Celtics’ unicorn?

gettyimages-2204561678.jpg

With Kristaps Porzingis’ trade to the Atlanta Hawks, the Celtics had to let go of their unicorn. KP’s unique skill set brought the Celtics two of the most important things in basketball: spacing and rim protection. Chris Boucher, coming from the Toronto Raptors, will now try to step into Porzingis’ shoes. At 6-foot-9, and with a 34% career average from beyond the arc, will he be able to become the next Porzingis?

What will be his role offensively?

Based on his shooting map, thirty-seven percent of his attempts came at the rim, 22% from the corners, and 47% from beyond the arc overall. From time to time, we will see him launching a few floaters, but mostly jump shots from three and attempts at the rim.

telechargement-2.jpeg

His jump shots from three are always assisted. He will be a catch-and-shoot threat but won’t be able to pull up or create his own space to punish opponents from deep. The main pivot point will be: can he drag opposing centers away from the rim? Looking back, there are notable doubts about that, and this is probably why Boston signed him to only a one-year contract.

videoframe_2003.png

First of all, he is not always guarded beyond the line, especially on the weak side, because his shooting motion is slow and opponents can recover. Moreover, his inability to attack with his size makes it easy for teams to assign a wing or a guard to defend him on the perimeter, as it’s unlikely that he will bully them to the rim.

Nonetheless, metrics indicate that he has had a positive impact on his team’s spacing over the last few years. Toronto’s FG% at the rim increased from 61.7% to 65.3% when he was on the court last year, and from 66.9% to 69.9% the year before. This remains a small sample over two years on a tanking team, but the numbers are encouraging and suggest that Chris could have a positive impact on the Celtics’ spacing.

While his shooting has been the most covered part of his offensive skill set in recent years, Chris Boucher has a secret weapon that could justify even more the Celtics’ choice to sign him.

Boucher’s secret weapon

While his shooting might bring back some Porzingis flashbacks, Boucher’s offensive impact might actually be closer to Luke Kornet’s in some areas—especially on the glass.

Over his career, his teams have consistently been far better on the offensive glass when he was on the floor. Last season, for example, the offensive rebound rate went from 27.6% to 33.8%. When Chris was on the court, the Toronto Raptors grabbed an offensive rebound on more than one out of every three missed shots. And this has been the case throughout his entire career.

With the increasing importance of offensive rebounds over the last few seasons, this could be a great pick for the Celtics to generate more possessions on the offensive end.

League average offensive rebound % consistently declined for 15+ years in both the NCAA and NBA, but in the last few years has been on the rise pic.twitter.com/C3fkqzFUnQ

— Jordan Sperber (@hoopvision68) September 16, 2025

His shooting ability might be less impactful than expected, and he won’t add much to offensive creation, but his energy on the glass could be game changing in some situations. In a 5-out setup or next to another big man, be ready to see Chris Boucher jumping on every miss to extend possessions and score on putbacks.

🗣 ANDDDD ONE pic.twitter.com/6h8l2A4009

— Toronto Raptors (@Raptors) March 25, 2023

After looking at what his offensive impact could be, let’s dive into what he might bring on the other end of the floor.

What can he bring on defense?

His size and length are impressive, but that doesn’t make him a great rim protector. He averages only one block per 36 minutes, and according to NBA tracking, he decreased his direct opponents’ rim efficiency by just 1%—ten times less than players like Luke Kornet and Kristaps Porzingis.

Nonetheless, he has defensive upside thanks to his mobility and length. Defensively, we might find him in a situation similar to Jayson Tatum’s: lurking off-ball at the nail, reading the game from the weak side, and ready to jump on a dead ball or intercept a weak pass.

He will also be able to fit into switch-everything defensive coverage, though he might be too skinny to deal with the bigger bodies of the league. Using him as a wrecking ball on defense, with high mobility, could be the key to exploiting his size and length. But will he have the motor and energy to handle this demanding defensive role? Time will tell.

Chris Boucher probably won’t be the next unicorn. His shooting isn’t as elite as Porzingis’, nor is his rim protection. But his unique skill set and body could still bring something new to the Celtics. Joe Mazzulla has often talked about how much the possession battle matters to him, and Chris Boucher might just be the perfect fit to help the Celtics win that battle on the court.

How Joe Mazzulla, Celtics helped one superfan beat cancer: “Whatever it takes”

7WBzmteq-2.jpg

Days before the Boston Celtics began their 2024 championship run, longtime Celtics superfan Craig Morency received terrible news: he had colon cancer.

“It’s a very isolating experience – so scary,” Morency, who is a father to two young girls, told CelticsBlog. “So, I leaned into the things I love to distract me from that fear.”

The Celtics – a lifelong source of joy – were near the top of that list. For years, he never missed a game, even the most inconsequential ones. Now, he was counting on his favorite basketball team to help keep him going during the most difficult time of his life.

The operation to remove the tumor was scheduled for the same day as a Celtics’ second-round playoff game against the Cavaliers, and fittingly, Morency’s first words after waking up were:

“Did we win?”

The Celtics had lost decisively, dropping Game 2 at home to the Cavs by 24 points. And, following the operation, the 40-year-old received more difficult medical news.

The cancer had spread beyond what doctors initially believed. Now, treatments would also include months of chemotherapy.

Still, he continued to tune into the conference semi-finals and was pleased to see the Celtics rattle off three straight victories to win the series against the Cavs.

After the Celtics’ Game 5 win, which sent them to the Eastern Conference Finals, Morency heard Joe Mazzulla say something offhand in a postgame press conference that hit him deeply.

“If you want to win, you’ve got to do whatever it takes.”

Whatever it takes.

“Everybody wants to win until it’s really time to win,” Mazzulla said in that same presser. “’Cause then you have to nut up and do a bunch of shit that you don’t want to do.”

In Morency’s case, there was a long list of things he really didn’t want to do. At the top of that list was more chemotherapy sessions, which increasingly made him feel physically sick and emotionally exhausted.

Receiving the news that the cancer was in stage three was devastating. But the very simple concept of ‘whatever it takes’ helped keep things in perspective.

“I just immediately harkened back to thinking about what Mazzulla said. However long it takes, the mission didn’t of surviving cancer didn’t change – it’s just now going to take maybe longer than I thought, and with more adversity than I thought.”

XATL1ay7.jpg

There was another Mazzulla-inspired line that became a guidepost for Morency throughout his journey:

“I get to deal with it.”

In Netflix’s Starting Five documentary, which aired in the fall of 2024 and shadowed the seasons of Jayson Tatum and four other NBA players, an interviewer began to ask Mazzulla about the pressure on Tatum’s plate.

“It seems to me that Jayson has to deal with unfair criticism,” the interviewer began.

“– Gets to deal with,” Mazzulla immediately interrupted, matter-of-fact. “He gets to deal with it.“

That concept resonated deeply with Morency — it was a privilege to undergo cancer treatment. He knew of many people who did not survive cancer. So, after every session, no matter how sick he felt, he reminded himself that he was incredibly lucky to even have the chance to fight.

“During those dread feelings where it was fueling some extreme depression at times, it was like – no, no, you get to do this chemo treatment,” Morency recalled. “Because there are people who don’t make it to this point, or who don’t find [the cancer] soon enough to still be able to do this.”

And so, he kept fighting.

4dEvR-rZ.jpg

Inside a series of Celtics run-ins

Morency ultimately credits the Mazzulla mindset – as well as the unconditional support of his family and friends – for helping him power through the most difficult time of his life.

By January of 2024, Morency had completed his initial treatments and traveled to Oklahoma City with his brother, Scott, to watch the Celtics face the Thunder.

He wasn’t out of the woods yet – scans months down the road would ultimately determine if treatments were a success – but twelve sessions of chemo were complete, and it was time to enjoy life as best he could.

That’s when a series of Celtics-themed coincidences and run-ins began.

In Oklahoma City, Morency and his brother attended Sunday morning church ahead of the Celtics’ matinee game against the Thunder. Morency had drifted away from religion throughout the course of his life, but reconnected with his faith upon his diagnosis.

After the church services concluded, the Morency brothers were waiting for their Uber back to the hotel when they saw a familiar face: then-Celtics center Luke Kornet, who was with the team’s director of player development, Craig Luschenat. Morency introduced himself as a diehard Celtics fan and shared with Kornet and Luschenat the special significance behind his trip to OKC, and how Mazzulla and the championship team unknowingly helped him get through his cancer journey.

hh5Q8I3H.jpg

“They were both just so empathetic – it was like not talking to a professional athlete and a coach, just two human beings,” Morency said.

It was then that Morency and his brother learned that they were actually staying in the same hotel as the Celtics in OKC. A few hours later, the two bumped into Joe Mazzulla and his wife, Camai, in the hotel lobby, and ended up chatting for nearly 15 minutes.

“I got the chance to really explain to him what that championship run had meant to me,” Morency said. “And he just thanked me. He was appreciative that I shared that with him, and both he and his wife very, very genuinely said, ‘We’re gonna pray for you – tell us your name again, we’re gonna pray for you.’”

bbpUv3_8.jpg

In April of 2025 – almost a year after his initial diagnosis – Morency finally got the news he had prayed for: he was cancer-free. To celebrate, he and more than 20 of his family and friends — including his beloved wife and kids — made the trip to Boston for a regular-season Celtics game at TD Garden.

As Morency and his family approached the court for warm-ups, he was spotted by Luschenat, who typically helps lead players through their pregame individual work. The Celtics assistant coach remembered every detail of their conversation from months earlier outside of that Oklahoma City church, and he was thrilled to learn that Morency had received the news he hoped for.

Moments later, Kornet came over as well, signing all of his family’s merch, taking photos, and expressing elation at the news.

dq3ZeQbw.jpg

Then, Morency and his family and friends went upstairs to their suite, which had been secured for the special night.

As tip-off neared, he unexpectedly saw Joe Mazzulla by the upstairs suites. It was an unusual place for the head coach to be so soon before game time.

It was also a weird deja vu because for the second time, just a few hours after bumping into Kornet and Luschenat, Morency and his brother ran into the Celtics’ head coach.

Fittingly, this time, Morency was wearing a “Whatever It Takes” T-shirt. He didn’t want to take too much time out of Mazzulla’s pregame obligations, but he did want to quickly relay the message that he was cancer-free.

Mazzulla vividly remembered his interaction with Morency in the OKC lobby, and Morency thanked him for helping instill in him the mindset to fight Stage 3 cancer.

“He got genuinely emotional,” Morency recalled. “And he was like, ‘Thank you. I really needed to hear that. Thank you for telling me that.’”

7WBzmteq-2.jpg

Needless to say, the Celtics’ 2025 season didn’t conclude at the mountaintop the way that the 2024 season did. Rather than win a title, the Celtics lost in the second round of the playoffs against the New York Knicks and saw Jayson Tatum suffer a ruptured Achilles tendon. Morency was also saddened to see key players from the Celtics rotation — like Kornet — depart in the offseason.

But he’s eternally grateful to have the most difficult year of his life behind him.

And, he’s looking forward to tuning into every game this season, regardless of how competitive this Celtics team ends up being.

When he looks back on his cancer battle, Morency said he’ll always be grateful to Mazzulla for instilling in him a fighter’s mindset – and for genuinely hearing him out on a human level when the two coincidentally met — once in OKC, after the completion of his treatments, and once back in Boston, after receiving the positive health news.

The phrase ‘bigger than basketball’ has become a tired cliche.

But, in Morency’s case, that’s exactly what the Celtics became in 2024.

“I hope [Joe] knows, and these guys know the impact that they have on fans,” Morency said. “I think it’s so easy to drown in criticism just based on your results on the court.”

“But, it’s just so much more than that.”

CelticsBlog player preview: Sam Hauser’s moment of inflection

gettyimages-2214867338.jpg

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: it’s going to be a transition season for the Celtics. Jayson Tatum is on ice, multiple starters from the championship team have left, and this upcoming year has the feel of part tryout, part NBA season for Boston.

Everyone on the team will compete for the right to participate in the next iteration of a contending Celtics team. Sharpshooting forward Sam Hauser falls squarely on that bubble.

The 27-year-old’s contribution off the bench was crucial to hanging a banner in 2024. Perhaps no player exemplified Joe Mazzulla’s offensive philosophy more than Hauser, who never met a three-point shot he didn’t like. His value as a high-volume movement shooter who produces elite results netted him a four-year, $45 million extension with the club.

But it was a down season in many respects for Sam last year (more on that soon), and now he heads into an actual inflection point, not only for the Celtics, but for Hauser himself.

Season in review

When I first wrote about Hauser in 2023, he was as pure a specialist as you can find — shoot ball, ask questions later. His talents as a shooter were beyond reproach, but he needed to make gains elsewhere to become more than a one-trick pony. During the championship year, Hauser improved his shot selection and fit in the offensive flow while taking strides as a defender.

Hauser’s specialist skills plodded on as usual last year. For the third season in a row, Hauser had a 98th percentile three-point rate while making at least 42% of his threes. Nothing could impede his shooting prowess. But he did take noticeable steps backward on film as a defender, especially in off-ball situations.

Rough off-ball possessions for Sam Hauser in 2024/25 pic.twitter.com/QG9hzKTgok

— r/GogaBitadze moderator (@klaytheist11) September 18, 2025

Hauser made a frequent habit of losing cutters, making bad closeouts, and switching poorly. It had a profound effect on Boston’s defense when he was on the floor. Of course, personnel changes and lineups can affect on/off stats, but the results are staggering. In 2023/24, Boston’s defense was 2.8 points per 100 possessions better with Hauser on the floor. In 2024/25, they were 3.4 points per 100 worse.

It is essential to highlight that he still put on some good on-ball tape. When engaged on the perimeter, Hauser did well at moving in short spaces and leveraging his size to make life difficult for ballhandlers. His strong side rim denial on drives stood out in particular.

Good amount of impressive on-ball reps for Sam Hauser in 24/25 pic.twitter.com/R5vv2K0EVA

— r/GogaBitadze moderator (@klaytheist11) September 18, 2025

However, regressing on defense is difficult to overcome. Hauser went from a +1.1 EPM player to a dead-even 0.0; his net rating dropped from +5.6 to +0.1. This came home to roost in the playoffs.

Let’s look at the playoff usage. During the title run, Hauser played in all 19 playoff contests, averaging roughly 15 minutes per game. He played 13 minutes per game in the first four games against the Magic in the first round before getting heavy run in a blowout Game 5. Then he played only four minutes in Game 1 against the Knicks, and didn’t see the floor again until Game 5, after Jayson Tatum was injured.

Some of this is context: the Celtics needed offensive firepower against an Orlando team that was spiritually from the 1980s, and a coherent defense against a deep and skilled New York team. However, it does indicate a decline in trust. Now more than ever, Boston needs stability at the forward spots. Can they count on Hauser to provide that?

Season outlook

I’m a nice guy, I’d like to think. I hope readers here, who are unfamiliar with my work, will come to feel the same way. So in the spirit of kindness, let’s indulge ourselves in some Shootin’ Sam highlights before I get to the critical points.

Sam Hauser movement/relocation shooting highlights from last season. Truly one of the best pure off-ball shooting talents in the game pic.twitter.com/eW4ivkMNRX

— r/GogaBitadze moderator (@klaytheist11) September 18, 2025

As you can see above, there are a lot of ways to get him involved other than “stand there and shoot it.” Lifts, pindowns, and elevators are designed looks they use often to spring him. He’s adept at relocating around the offense to create opportunities. Without Jayson Tatum, it stands to reason to assume Hauser will demand more usage as they attempt to recreate an All-NBA player in the aggregate.

Some of that will come as a screener. I enjoyed the sets Mazzulla deployed last year using Hauser as a cog in ghost screens, pick-and-pops, and layered Spain pick-and-roll actions.

The people demand more Sam Hauser ball screening actions next year pic.twitter.com/6wWjDPKpxu

— r/GogaBitadze moderator (@klaytheist11) September 18, 2025

I’d like to see more on-ball reps as well. Hauser, as a speed dribble handoff or guard-wing PNR option, carries some intrigue, as it did in flashes last season.

Expect Joe Mazzulla to press the Sam Hauser speed DHO/quick ball screen option a bit more this year pic.twitter.com/H9HTMtXcIw

— r/GogaBitadze moderator (@klaytheist11) September 18, 2025

But these are shorter-term concerns for Boston. If Hauser can scale up offensively while maintaining elite shooting results, that could be a game-changer for Boston during this year. But his future with the team will be decided defensively.

If he can get back to his 2023/24 standard of not being the worst defender on the floor while contributing offensively, he reaffirms his place as a future part of the team. If he continues to struggle or regresses further, his spot on the 2026/27 team gets jeopardized. It’s distinctly possible that Hauser could be better than last year and find himself shipped out at the deadline or in the offseason.

Making a hair over $10 million in the first year of his extension, he’s a valuable trade chip as a sub-MLE priced specialist with value to any team. Boston may prioritize cap space in the 2026 offseason and find the three years and $35 million remaining on an average role player’s deal to be less than ideal.

No player is safe from the intense scrutiny the Celtics will apply internally. However, some of their players could replicate their production from last year and, without a doubt, live to see the next Tatum-centric iteration of the team. Hauser isn’t one of those guys. Despite Sam’s contributions, he’s one of the players who will face this crossroads.

Beyond the buckets: Jaylen Brown’s next leap as a playmaker

gettyimages-2159864378.jpg

When you picture Jaylen Brown, the first thing that comes to mind is usually scoring: explosive drives, midrange pull-ups, and impressive transition dunks. But heading into a season where Jayson Tatum will be out for at least a majority of the year, Brown’s evolution as a playmaker could be the key to keeping the Celtics’ offense afloat.

The Numbers Don’t Lie
Last season, Brown averaged a career-high 4.5 assists per game, while also taking fewer shots — 17.7 shots per game, his lowest volume in five years. This shift in offensive production speaks volumes. Brown wasn’t just hunting for his own looks, but he was actively redistributing the ball to his teammates.

The difference is even more apparent when you look at Brown’s numbers when Tatum isn’t on the floor. In 39 career games without his co-star, Brown has averaged 27.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 3.9 APG. The scoring is expected, but the assist increase is over one more per game than his career average, showing a willingness and ability to take on more responsibility as a playmaker.

And when the stakes are the highest, Brown has shown flashes of brilliance. Take Game 5 against the Knicks last season as an example: 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 12 assists on a partially torn meniscus. That performance isn’t a fluke; that’s evidence that when Brown is forced into a lead role, he can elevate his passing.

Jaylen Brown vs. the Knicks (Game 5)

▫️26 Points
▫️12 Assists
▫️8 Rebounds
▫️9-17 FG
▫️3-5 3PT
▫️CELTICS WIN ☘️ pic.twitter.com/16mGRGmXbD

— 𝙍𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙮 ☘️ (@CelticsRiley) May 15, 2025

Why It Matters Now

With a guard-heavy roster and question marks in the frontcourt, Boston may lean into smaller lineups where Brown shifts to the 4 or slides in as a slightly undersized three. That puts him in a position where he’s not just a scorer but the offensive hub for the Celtics. Surrounded by shooters like Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Sam Hauser, plus a huge rim presence in Neemias Queta, Brown’s decision-making in this starting unit may determine if those units flourish or flounder.

If defenses go big, Brown has the quickness and the footwork to blow by slower forwards. If defenses go small, Brown has the size and strength to bully mismatches and work in the post, where he is very efficient. Either way, he will draw extra attention from defenses, which makes his reads out of doubles and kick-outs even more critical.

Room To Grow

Of course, there’s work to be done for Brown. Brown still struggles with turnovers, especially when asked to be the primary ballhandler. Over the last five seasons, Brown has averaged more than 2.5 turnovers per game in four of them. The next step in his development is to improve his processing speed by making quicker decisions on when to drive, kick, or pull up, while limiting his turnovers.

But the progress is undeniable. With Brown’s assist numbers trending upwards, his chemistry with shooters only increasing with time, and he’s already shown his ability to score in the clutch when the Celtics need him the most.

A New Chapter For Brown

Jaylen Brown said it feels like a new era for the Celtics on his stream today:

“Half the team is gone. I wish them the best. I appreciate them. They were great teammates… it’s a new era, everything has kind of changed and shifted.” pic.twitter.com/EMF5aawU8o

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) September 20, 2025

No one expects Brown to transition into a point forward in Tatum’s absence immediately; that’s not his game. But for a team that is going to be without one of the league’s best players for most, if not all, of next season, leaning on Brown’s playmaking is less about reinventing him as a player and more about trusting him with the ball in his hands for the majority of the game. Trusting him to make the right reads, to punish mismatches, and to prove once again that he is more than the “other guy.”

If the Celtics are going to maximize this roster next season, they are going to need Brown not only as a scorer but as a distributor. And based on what we have already seen, JB is ready for the challenge.

CelticsBlog player preview: what will Hugo Gonzalez bring from Spain to Boston?

gettyimages-2226210082.jpg

The tedious, eager-filled process of earning an organization’s trust lies at the forefront of every rookie’s list of challenges stepping into the NBA. Celtics rookie Hugo Gonzalez, however, is among the most prepared.

He’s already weathered the grind of playing behind a revolving door of elite talent, including teammates with NBA pedigrees. Gonzalez wasn’t even legally old enough to drink when he debuted as a professional hooper for Real Madrid in the Liga ACB at just 16 years old. As the fourth-youngest player to ever suit up for the team, Gonzalez scraped together only four appearances, averaging less than two minutes a night.

Now, there aren’t many situations the 19-year-old can’t navigate around Boston’s rewarding — and sometimes unforgiving — atmosphere.

Boston selected Gonzalez with its lone first-round selection in June’s 2025 NBA Draft at No. 28. The 6-foot-6 wing was fresh off riding the continuous wave of sporadic playing time for Real Madrid, but the flashes were deemed enough for Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens.

“He’s tough, he’s hard-playing, he cuts, he goes after the ball, he competes,” Stevens said on Draft Night, per NBC Sports Boston. “He’s got all the intangibles of a winning basketball player. There’s things he can get better at, just like everybody else at that age, but competitiveness is at a high level.”

Stevens continued: “When you are that age, in that situation (with Real Madrid), you gotta earn your stripes. When we took our team (to Spain) years ago in the preseason, we played against a 16-year-old (Luka) Dončić that hardly got in, right? Hugo’s a little bit older, and I’m not comparing him to Dončić, but I will say it’s great when you get to play for those teams. When you put on a Real Madrid jersey, you put on a responsibility similar to here, and I think that that’s a good thing.”

Sharing the floor with experienced NBA veterans Serge Ibaka, Facundo Campazzo, Dennis Smith Jr., and Bruno Fernando, Gonzalez averaged just 3.1 points and 1.7 rebounds while shooting 40.8% from the floor. The hustle-first sparkplug logged 10.2 minutes through 69 games, but Gonzalez’s patience and unseen work ethic introduced themselves once the opportunity arrived at his doorstep.

Hugo ➡️ Baylor pic.twitter.com/mD657iCV0R

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) July 11, 2025

Gonzalez wasted no time showcasing his heady instincts when called upon by coach Matt Reynolds in Summer League back in July. He corralled an offensive rebound off a missed Baylor Scheierman 3-pointer, sprinting from the top of the key to beat out three Memphis Grizzlies before scoring a putback layup. It was Gonzalez’s first standout highlight in his first Summer League appearance, validating Stevens’ assessment of the young prospect. He finished with 12 points, four rebounds and five assists en route to a 92-78 victory over Memphis.

And while most fans tuning in were too busy Googling Gonzalez’s overseas stats and scouting reports, those within the Celtics locker room knew what to expect from the rookie.

“He plays hard — really hard,” Jordan Walsh said three days before the Summer League opener, per CLNS Media. “So, fans are gonna love that. He plays hard. He dives on the floor. He’s a defensive menace, and then he attacks the rim with force. I think everyone knows that, but it was my first time seeing him play and be able to watch it and go against it.”

Gonzalez played 26 minutes a game across four Summer League contests for the Celtics, averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 30.2% shooting from the field and 30.4% shooting from three. His Las Vegas highlight reel showed promise. Gonzalez was frequently engaged on both ends of the floor, making plays left and right with an Energizer Bunny-like motor while also knocking down an occasional 3-pointer — surely something that caught head coach Joe Mazzulla’s eye.

There isn’t a guaranteed role awaiting Gonzalez’s TD Garden arrival — and that’s fine. Circumstances dating back to Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles tendon in the team’s Eastern Conference semifinals, coupled with an offseason yard sale, help crack open a valuable window of opportunity. Boston needs depth, and that requires Mazzulla to get creative to maximize the team’s depleted roster, which should favor Gonzalez, similarly to when Scheierman became a sparkplug sensation amid his career-best 20-point performance last season against the Brooklyn Nets.

2223651195.jpg

Without Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holiday, the Celtics are going to have to squeeze every ounce of juice possible out of the roster, and Gonzalez’s makeup is well-suited to help make that happen. Boston has a keen eye for spotting late first-rounders capable of delivering an impact that goes under-appreciated in the box score, just like last season’s Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard — the 26th overall pick in 2020.

Gonzalez isn’t walking into a situation where talent is overflowing and minute distribution is up for serious debate. Beyond Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Anfernee Simons and Pritchard, the rest of the crew is essentially a blank canvas for Mazzulla and the coaching staff to shape. Therefore, regardless of what Gonzalez’s role looks like on Opening Night, it shouldn’t be interpreted as a definitive measure for role or potential. At just 19, he’s back to being too young to drink (in Spain, the legal drinking age is 18), yet he’s already amassed years of experience playing with and against professionals — including former NBA players — along with traits that have historically assisted players of all calibers to thrive in a Celtics uniform.

Those intangibles alone, which drew the attention of Stevens and Boston’s brass, are sure to book Gonzalez both minutes and applause from TD Garden’s crowd throughout the season.

“We’re pretty, pretty excited,” Gonzalez said, per team-provided video. “Especially being drafted by a really good franchise, a really good situation. Being drafted by Boston was really good and new for me, and I’m excited for it.”

Teammates, including Walsh and Scheierman, have already offered their praises to Gonzalez after receiving just a glimpse of what the Celtics could have on their hands in the coming years. The roster might be in flux, but one thing is clear: Gonzalez is intriguing and worth keeping an eye on. He’s young, energetic, willing to accept the ebbs and flows that come with developing as a pro, and is off to a head start on leaving a strong first impression amongst those within the organization.

If that all translates once it’s time to hit the parquet, Gonzalez could mold into a sneaky surprise for Boston.

Takeaways from Bill Chisholm’s press conference

gettyimages-2210732500.jpg

Earlier today, we heard from Bill Chisholm, Aditya Mittal, Wyc Grousbeck and Brad Stevens. This was the first time Celtics fans had heard from Chisholm since his ownership group purchased the franchise and he assumed the role of governor.

Whenever a new ownership group takes power — be it in sports, business, or any other aspect of life — there’s always a concern about the potential changes coming down the pipeline. For Celtics fans, those concerns were multi-layered.

After all, not only do the Celtics need an ownership group that is willing and capable of spending into the tax when the time arises. They also need a group that empowers Brad Stevens — arguably one of the top-three Presidents of Basketball Operations in the NBA — to continue making the moves he deems necessary to get the Celtics back to the top of the Basketball mountain.

“We have the right people in place to make those decisions,” Chisholm said. “I want to be supportive of Brad and Rich and their teams…On the patience point, I would say that I think patience is important. There’s a strategy, there’s a game plan that we’ve laid out, and I think it makes a ton of sense.”

Honestly, that was the ideal answer from Chisholm. The Celtics have an amazing front office staff in place, and that starts with Stevens, Mike Zarren and runs throughout the whole staff. That group built the roster that dominated the league and won a championship just 18 months ago.

These concerns about ownership direction became more pressing after what proved to be a challenging summer for the organization. Losing Jayson Tatum to an Achilles tendon injury during the Eastern Conference Semifinals set off a chain reaction that led to multiple cost-cutting moves to begin the offseason. Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, Luke Kornet and Al Horford have all left the franchise, either by trade or free agency, as the Celtics ducked under the second luxury tax apron.

When a championship team starts shedding key contributors just over a year after hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy, you couldn’t help but wonder whether those cost-cutting measures were a directive from the new ownership group or whether they were part of a larger plan to reset the tax sheet, get younger and begin building a new-look rotation around Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Fortunately, Stevens provided some clarity to that question during the press conference.

“You have to give yourself the right flexibility and opportunity to jump at the right deals,” Stevens said. “You don’t always know when those are gonna present themselves. So, the second apron was the key…There’s no tax goal. There’s nothing that’s set in stone that we have to get to a certain level. The level, obviously, where we were earlier this summer, that’s not close to where we are now. And listen, we’ve said goodbye to awesome people and really good players. But I think we’ve added people who are excited to add their strings together and see what we can do.”

Nevertheless, the topic of the luxury tax and Chisholm’s willingness to operate within it were inevitable discussion points throughout the presser. After all, the Celtics will undoubtedly need to embrace a larger payroll once the team is ready to throw its hat back into the title contention ring.

Encouragingly, Chisholm didn’t flinch whenever the topic of the luxury tax, or his willingness to pay it, arose from the media in attendance.

“Let’s go for it,” Chisholm said. “But let’s go for it in a reasonable way…Let’s do whatever we can to win championships and raise banners. And, raise as many as we can…Ultimately, we’re gonna do everything we can to win, that is job number one. And not just win games, win championships.”

Of course, those words must be met with action when the time arises. Yet, as a lifelong Celtics fan and someone who is from the area, you get the sense (even from all the way over in the UK, watching via YouTube) that he’s being genuine. It feels like they will truly do whatever it takes to make the franchise as successful as possible.

I mean, he literally said as much.

“I will absolutely be there,” Chisholm said. “I will do whatever it takes. Whatever the Boston Celtics need me to do. If they need me to do press conferences every day, I’ll do them. If they need me to stay out of the way, then I’ll do that.”

While Chisholm’s commitment to spending when necessary provides long-term reassurance, the reality is that the immediate future presents different challenges. The roster construction heading into this season means those championship-level investments may need to wait. There’s been too much of a talent drain. The front court is inexperienced, young and on paper, lacks the defensive stability that you try to build a championship team around.

However, both Stevens and Chisholm, at different points, shared their optimism over the current roster. It’s clear that they believe in some of the younger guys who are in line to receive a bigger opportunity than in past years. One thing I really liked was how Chisholm mentioned playing with an underdog mentality, because for any of us who lived through the early Brad Stevens years, we know just how much fun those never-say-die teams can be.

“We’re not gonna put a ceiling on the team,” Chisholm said. “We’ve got a lot of talent. And we’ve got some very strong character people. I’m very excited about what this team can do…There’s a smaller margin for error, but I do think this team has the potential to be pretty special. I think we’re gonna embrace the underdog mentality as well.”

Of course, the way we view this current roster could drastically shift before the end of the season — especially if Jayson Tatum returns to the rotation. And while I’ve made my thoughts on the value of him sitting out for the full season, if he does choose to return, he will undoubtedly add some much-needed experience and talent to the front-court rotation.

Still, a key point to note is that Stevens made it clear that from a front office standpoint, there is no set timeline for a Tatum return. Instead, the focus will be on ensuring he’s healthy and back to, or at least near, the best version of himself (physically speaking) before putting him back out there on the court.

“No timeline on Jayson from my perspective,” Stevens said. “My number one goal…Jayson Tatum fully healthy. And he’s well on his way.”

The harsh truth is, without Tatum, a championship is off the cards. Sure, the Celtics can be a playoff team in the upcoming season, but they will need Tatum to ensure they’re at a championship level. He’s simply too important to everything the team does, and both his playmaking and scoring ability are near impossible to replicate — that’s why he’s a top-10 player in the world.

I do think there’s upside to a retooling season, though. Not only will the Celtics reset their cap sheet (to some degree), get younger and potentially unearth some hidden gems, but they will also build a new offensive and defensive system, and that could potentially squeeze even more out of both Tatum and Brown.

It’s clear that the overall goal — from top to bottom of the organization — is raising banners. The Celtics still have their winning formula and star-level core. Now, it’s about finding the right supporting cast, with the skill sets to accentuate what the team is trying to do.

The upcoming season could get bumpy at times. It could even get unbearable for stretches. But with everyone pulling in the same direction, this retooling phase will likely be short-lived. And with that, I’ll leave you with a comment from Wyc…A comment that will resonate with Celtics fans around the globe…A comment we can all get behind.

“I want a third ring,” Grousbeck said. “And I want a fourth. I’ve got two, it’s a nice start. And this group is committed to getting it together.”

CelticsBlog graciously allowed this article to be cross-posted from my growing “Celtics Chronicle” newsletter.

Celticsblog player preview : Josh Minott’s defense will surprise you

minottUntitled-6.webp

When the Boston Celtics made headlines this offseason, it was due to the departures of bigger names like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. But quietly tucked under a heap of moves was the addition of Josh Minott, a 6’8’’ 22-year-old wing. After spending his first three years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Minott arrives in Boston with a blend of athleticism, defensive versatility, and untapped potential that could make him a valuable piece in Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.

Minott appeared in just 46 games last season, logging a total of only 276 minutes, most of which came during garbage time. Ideally, you’d want a larger sample size to fully evaluate a player, but even in limited action, Minott’s performances, both in meaningful stretches and blow out situations, offer a fairly clear picture of his skillset. The central question, after reviewing all his minutes, is whether he can consistently sustain the things he does well when given more time.

He has intriguing traits on both sides of the ball but defensively is where I think he can help this team the most.

Defense

Minott is 100% one of the leagues most underrated defensive playmakers.

When it comes to steals, Minott ranked in the 92nd percentile in both steals (2.5) and deflections (5.3) per 100 possessions according to Databllr.com. In the passing lane he is a real threat with his quick reaction time, closing speed, and wingspan. He’s able to diagnose reads swiftly and take them the other way for transition opportunities. He showed the ability to both apply enough pressure to blow up actions and play like a cornerback in open space to track down a pass in the air.

On the ball he uses the same attributes plus impressive agility for a 6’8’’ guy.

I would definitely classify Minott as more of a defensive playmaker than a true stopper, but he does flash noteworthy plays where the opponent is disrupted by his size and lateral movement. If he can improve in this aspect, his stature and traits suggest an at minimum 2 through 4 defender.

In the shot blocking department, Minott was elite ranking in the 100th percentile among small forwards with 2.1 blocks per 100 possessions. He also recorded a 4.2 stop percentage (a combined metric of steals, blocks, and offensive fouls drawn), placing him in the 96th percentile league-wide. His vertical explosion truly shines here, which is arguably his most impressive trait. Even when an offensive player gains a step on him, Minott has the bounce and wingspan to quickly eat up space and alter or reject shots at the rim.

While it’s good to know he can do it on the ball, I think the Celtics would benefit most from him as a helper. This team lost the likes of Holiday, Al Horford, and Jayson Tatum (maybe) for this upcoming season, all but stripping away most of the team’s defensive versatility. On occasion, these three guarded centers so Porzingis, Luke Kornet, and Neemias Queta could matchup against the opposing team’s weakest perimeter threat and help at the rim. Unless Minott gets stronger and/or shows more strength than I’ve seen on film, I don’t expect him to guard centers. But where he can be a disruptor is flying in out of nowhere and contesting at the rim.

Josh Minott could help replace Kristaps Porzingis (and Robert Williams) in the Celtics' defense this season pic.twitter.com/BbRH31NnZP

— Jack Simone (@JackSimoneNBA) September 23, 2025

An improvement in timing and discipline would elevate his impact even further in this area, but there’s no questioning his motor and athleticism.

If there’s one area of concern with Minott defensively, it’s his tendency to foul. He MUST learn to defend without committing illegal contact. Last season, he averaged 4.3 fouls per 100 possessions. Even during promising stints, he occasionally sabotaged his own momentum by picking up quick fouls. Learning to channel his energy into more controlled chaos will be key to maximizing his impact and earning consistent minutes.

Offense

Minott’s offensive role is straightforward: knock down open threes, cut with purpose, set the occasional screen, and finish at the rim. Fortunately, he was already used in a similar capacity during his time in Minnesota, primarily as a play finisher. In fact, 91% of his field goal attempts came either at the rim or from beyond the arc. An encouraging sign that he understands his role and plays within it.

Minott shot 64% at the rim last season and while 79% of those makes were assisted, he also demonstrated the ability to attack closeouts with force flashing some downhill potential.

I also wouldn’t mind Minott being used in cutting/dump off play types where he can just catch the ball and finish.

Now to the outside shot which remains more of a question mark.

Minott shot 33% from three last season, albeit on just 43 total attempts. He fared slightly better on catch and shoot opportunities and corner threes, where he connected at a 35% clip. The mechanics aren’t the cleanest, but if he can replicate or even slightly improve on those numbers in Boston, it would go a long way toward solidifying his role and spacing the floor for the team. The most encouraging sign for me though is him being a career 90% free throw shooter (41 attempts).

Minott isn’t refined yet as a handler and shouldn’t be doing much in that department, but I did see some unexpected passing chops.

I am nowhere near advocating for reps as a handler but being able to make split second or .5 decisions is so crucial. If he can add value by being unselfish and making the right reads, that’ll help his rotation odds.

Minott isn’t coming to Boston with high expectations, but his athleticism, length, and defensive playmaking fit a clear need for a team that just lost some of its most versatile defenders. His offensive role will remain limited, but if he can knock down open threes at a respectable rate and stay on the floor by cutting down on fouls, he could carve out a niche at a crowded wing position.

Who is going to be the Celtics fifth starter?

gettyimages-2193530996.jpg

I am pretty confident in saying that 4 of the 5 Celtics starting spots are going to be Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown and Neemias Queta. That leaves one more spot up for grabs and I think it will come down to three players.

Option 1: Sam Hauser

Hauser is the lone returning Celtic on this list. As one of the best shooters in the NBA, Hauser’s skillset still matters for the Celtics.

He is the median point in terms of offense and defense on this list. The shooting is elite and can give the Celtics m0re spacing and an extra boost on that end and while the defense isn’t great, he can still hold up well enough to not cost the Celtics.

This would give the Celtics a pretty small lineup. Jaylen Brown hasn’t played the 4 a ton throughout his career, spending just 5% of his minutes played a season ago at power forward, per Cleaning the Glass. He is going to need to play there more this season and might even start there.

Their defense would be lacking but the offense would be able to generate a lot of points. Even if they don’t start this lineup, I expect to see a lot of the 5-man combo of Pritchard, White, Hauser, Brown and Queta this season.

Option 2: Chris Boucher

Boucher is the most limited offensive player on this list and the floor spacing with him and Queta would worry me. However, his impact on the other end of the court might very well win him this job.

The Celtics are going to be a good offense. With Brown, Pritchard, White, Hauser and Anfernee Simons, they are going to find ways to score. They have lost a lot defensively with the departures of Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet and Al Horford and the injury to Jayson Tatum.

Finishing defensive possessions is something that the Celtics may struggle with this year and starting Boucher can help that. He isn’t an elite defender by any means, but his length can help the Celtics on that end more than the smaller options we are talking about.

gettyimages-2207700268.jpg

Option 3: Anfernee Simons

This one is a little out of left field and one that I don’t expect the Celtics to use, but it is an option. Going super small would put the Celtics at a disadvantage on defense which would likely make this lineup untenable. However, there is a method to this madness.

Let’s start with the fact that we are going to see the three-guard look at times for the Celtics this season. Simons, Pritchard and White are 3 of the 4 best players on the team, so Joe Mazzulla going to want to play those guys big minutes. In games where they don’t have Jaylen Brown, those three guys will be their best three at creating offense.

A 4-man lineup of Brown, White, Pritchard and Simons is going to score. They are all guys who can score the ball in a multitude of different ways and that offensive flexibility is going to be something that will be tough for teams to guard.

That said, the defense makes starting this lineup consistently untenable. They just won’t have enough size to get stops because even if they do force a miss, teams will eat them alive on the offensive glass. I would be surprised if Mazzulla started this lineup at the start of the season.

Josh Minott is another name that could be thrown around but I don’t see that one, maybe later in the season he establishes himself but he will need to earn it.

I would start Chris Boucher. I think his size and length are things the Celtics are lacking in other areas of this lineup and the team as a whole. He shot the ball well enough last season (36% from three) that Boston can justify starting him. Brown is going to be playing the 4 a lot this season, but they don’t need him to start the game in that spot; the Celtics will limit his minutes at that position as much as they can and starting Boucher allows for that.

I do think that Boucher will be Mazzulla’s choice as well. The Celtics are just lacking too much size in their starting 5, something that Joe has liked over his first three years as coach and Boucher can give them more of a lift to start games in that department.
