Celtics rookie partook in incredible celebration of basketball and community

MEDFORD, Mass.Hugo Gonzalez was relishing every second.

The Celtics rookie – still a few months away from his NBA debut – volunteered at a celebration of basketball and community in West Medford on Sunday, and spent his afternoon with kids who one day dream of being in his position.

Gonzalez helped lead a basketball clinic at Dugger Park alongside Utah Jazz forward Georges Niang, who is from Lowell, Mass., and former NBA player Shabbaz Napier, who is from Roxbury, Mass.

The trio hung out with hundreds of kids – playfully competing in 1-on-1 games, signing autographs, and snapping photos with anyone who asked.

All the while, the city of Medford celebrated basketball and community in its 9th annual Hoops and Hope event, a free, day-long basketball clinic that raises money for two causes: the West Medford Community Center, a staple center in the community, and the Krystle Campbell Memorial Fund, a charitable foundation established in honor a Medford native who was killed in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Nearly 400 kids attended the event, which included a high school basketball tournament for both boys and girls, a men’s college basketball tournament, and youth basketball clinics led by NBA players.

Trent Headley, a West Medford native who is now a police officer in Malden, serves as Hoops and Hope’s unofficial security person. Headley explained that the event is more than just a fundraiser: it’s also an annual community gathering.

“We’re a proud people from this neighborhood,” said Headley. “It’s a 100-year-old, middle-class, Black neighborhood for many, many years.”

“When you grew up here, everybody touched you in some kind of way. We all knew each other’s birthdays, and the older folks knew your parents. You got home and you came down to this park after school to play basketball.”

Andy Beck, a West Medford resident of more than 40 years who helps direct Hoops and Hope, said the involvement of NBA players has been huge.

“On a human level, it’s wonderful to see them give up their time to give back and celebrate,” Beck told CelticsBlog. “When you see a 7-year-old looking you in the eye, just in awe of what you’ve been able to accomplish, that has to make you feel great.”

And, having an active Celtics player in West Medford meant the world to longtime residents. Headley said that growing up, the kids would convene after weekend Celtics games and emulate what they saw on their television screens on the basketball courts of Dugger Park.

“I wanted to be like Larry Bird,” Headley said. “You’d watch the games, and you’d come right down to this park to practice the moves.”

Inside a special day in West Medford

On the sunny Sunday afternoon, Georges Niang, Shabbaz Nappier, and Hugo Gonzalez each helped lead basketball drills on the park’s two outdoor courts.

Then, the trio of pros took time to answer questions from excited boys and girls.

Niang, who was acquired by the Celtics in July from the Atlanta Hawks, but traded to the Utah Jazz earlier this month, joked about his brief Celtics tenure as he recalled the many stops in his NBA journey.

Nappier recalled playing basketball for 12 hours a day in Roxbury’s Washington Park, an upbringing he credits for propelling him toward the NBA.

Gonzalez spoke to the kids about his experiences growing up in Spain and revealed that Pau Gasol and Rudy Fernandez were his heroes growing up.

“I was just – five, six years ago, like you guys,” Gonzalez told the kids who sat eager-eyed on the concrete. He recounted his experiences as a kid playing at the Real Madrid academy.

— Noa Dalzell 🏀 (@NoaDalzell) August 24, 2025

Gonzalez’s participation and energy drew praise from the event’s organizers.

“He’s been wonderful,” Beck said. “It’s great for kids to see somebody from Spain and to hear him talk about his journey, which is a little bit different than kids who grew up in the US or in the inner-city or in West Medford. It’s wonderful to see kids learning from people who speak different languages, come from different backgrounds.”

One boy asked Gonzalez when he was planning on retiring, spurring laughter. Gonzalez smiled, but answered the question earnestly.

“When you feel like you gave your all to the sport,” Gonzalez said. “I’m 19, so I hope that’s in a long time.”

Gonzalez’s participation marked the first time that an active Celtics player has volunteered at Hoops and Hope. The event, unlike some community events NBA players participate in, did not involve financial incentives; Gonzalez simply wanted to hang out in the community.

“It’s really a tribute to Hugo to show up,” Beck said. “It’s great to see an active Celtics player – we’ve had retired Celtic players – and I know how busy [the active players] are.”

After the clinics ended, Gonzalez made sure to take photos and get to know many of the event’s attendees.

Many older residents who weren’t partaking in the basketball festivities simply brought a lawn chair, watched, and relished the community atmosphere.

Several pointed out just how engaged and warm Gonzalez was to each of the kids who approached him. One woman proclaimed that although she didn’t know much about basketball, he was already the greatest draft pick ever.

Gonzalez would have to surpass countless Celtics greats to enter that conversation, but Headley took away one thing from observing the 19-year-old all afternoon: “He’s gonna end up being a fan favorite.”

Celtics fans decide who they want to start (NBA Reacts results)

gettyimages-2190843232.jpg

The results are in. Boston Celtics fans want to stick with familiar faces in the starting lineup.

Let’s start with the guard position. Obviously Derrick White should start at one of the guard spots (with Jaylen Brown playing the wing). That leaves another guard position (or ball handlers, or swings, or whatever positionless designation you want to go with).

Newcomer Anfernee Simons started 70 games for the Portland Trailblazers last year and Payton Pritchard won 6th man of the year (starting just 3 games). But that didn’t stop people from voting for Pritchard to start.

Boston_1_082625.png

I don’t think this should be any big surprise, regardless if you agree with it or not. Boston fans are comfortable and familiar with Pritchard and see this as his opportunity to take a step forward into a bigger role. Meanwhile, Simons seems to have the skillset of a 6th man, bench scorer. He’s probably paid a little more than you might allocate for that role, but he’s also on an expiring contract. Which leads to another reason the Celtics might favor starting Pritchard. If they are serious about trading Simons, it might make more sense to stick with Payton from the start (rather than trying to “showcase” Simons).

On to the next big question mark, the center position.

Boston_2_082625.png

Again, familiarity swings the vote. You could argue that Boucher has the most experience and deserves a shot at the job. However, he’s really more of a power forward or stretch big and would be undersized as a starting center. It might not really matter depending on how much Coach Mazzulla rotates these guys in and out of the lineups.

Queta certainly looks the part of an NBA center and has shown flashes of productivity in green. Barring another trade, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get the nod this Fall. At least for a while.

Neemias Queta wants to show Portugal’s basketball growth and his own

gettyimages-2232372201.jpg

Neemias Queta stood alongside his longtime friend Rafael Lisboa last month in Portugal. Lisboa was visiting Queta’s youth camp to support his friend, share knowledge with the campers and continue conversations leading up to this month’s EuroBasket tournament. Despite Queta undergoing clean-up knee surgery in May and Lisboa returning from a meniscus tear, they prepared to lead Portugal into only its third-ever EuroBasket and first since 2011.

“It’s a really big competition for us. It’s the first time that this generation and the first time in life in … years,” Lisboa told CLNS Media/CelticsBlog. “I don’t know that Portugal plays in the main competition of the EuroBasket. It was a dream before, right now, it was something that we worked for … we know that we go there as underdogs, but our belief as a group is to try to pass the first phase and advance to the second round, so I think we have a team for that and we go there to try to fight for our country.”

On Wednesday, Lisboa and Queta led Portugal to its first victory in the tournament in 18 years, 62-50, over the Czech Republic. Lisboa scored 15 points while Queta’s dominant 23 points, 18 rebounds, two steals and four blocks prompted dreams about the possibilities his improvement could bring to the Celtics’ front court after multiple offseason losses at center. Queta will likely take over as a starter for Boston this season, but first, he wants to showcase Portugal’s basketball growth on the international stage — inspired in part by his own development.

Roughly 80 young players with promise attended Queta’s camp each day over one week — scrimmaging, developing skills and meeting with the star, Portuguese and international coaches, Maine Celtics assistant Taaj Ridley and former NBA guard Toney Douglas, whose son participated in the camp. Douglas moved to Portugal after playing for several clubs in the country. Queta spent most of his days observing, coaching and celebrating big plays with the kids. He took a break at lunchtime for rehab, then after the gym cleared later, took the floor with Ridley to workout.

“It’s making sure I get in great shape, go out there and make elite decisions with the ball in my hands and making sure I get great finishes this year,” Queta explained in a sit-down with CLNS. “I also want to raise up my free throws, my free throw attempts, this year. Just wanna be aggressive and make sure I get my percentage up on the free throw line, too. I think I always work on the threes no matter what, you never know when you’ll need one of them and even if I’m not a great shooter off the three-point line, if I’m open and I gotta shoot it, I’ll shoot it confidently. You never know. I want to make them.”

Queta and Ridley tailored the workouts toward the role he’d play with the Portuguese national team, more facilitating and scoring with a focus on beating his matchup one-on-one. The Celtics will ask him to focus on the little things, screening, rolling and positioning himself defensively. Joe Mazzulla, noticeably tough on the center last season, told Queta to play freely this upcoming year.

He’ll drop more with Portugal and roam on the Celtics, most likely. His importance to the national team speaks for itself and could preview his now veteran role in Boston with rookie Amari Williams saying he wanted to learn from veterans like Queta in his first press conference. Queta appreciated that, since he didn’t even know whether he’d stay in the league for long several years ago.

“It’s not really what we were really expecting,” Queta said. “But I feel like we’re in a position that I’m growing, I’m developing at a steady pace, with big responsibility becomes the man of … I need to show out every day with more consistency. I’ve been working at it, and I feel like I’m getting ready for it, so hopefully it’s gonna be a big year for me in general and I think I’m gonna step up for the occasion and all the other guys as well. We’re not really the group that everybody points out as the best, but we’re gonna prove them otherwise.”

Many wanted to see Queta get a chance late last season after a strong start earlier in the year. He understood the experience and talent in front of him — Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet all served as mentors and models for him, especially Kornet, his favorite teammate and biggest supporter even as they competed for reserve minutes early. Some of their skills overlapped like thie uncanny vision and enormous impact on the offensive boards.

The skills that led Kornet to signing a $40.7 million contract with the Spurs this summer — expert screening, excellent defensive positioning and even elite finishing at the rim — took years to develop. Queta has spent three honing his own, and they showed with Team Portugal. He hit a three in the opening minutes of Wednesday’s win, faked a dribble handoff before halftime to step into a pull-up elbow jumper and drained a turnaround jumper in an exhibition.

“A lot of the process of the workouts that we do, honestly, are things that we worked on in Boston with De’Sean Butler, who’s now his player development coach and Craig Luschenat, who’s the head of player development for the Celtics,” Ridley told CLNS/CelticsBlog. “A lot of the things (we) work on are workouts that we did in Boston together, but I just liked to put my own spin on it, but mainly just working on his touch around the rim, him just getting comfortable in screening without fouling, him getting a better understanding of screening without fouling, then also working on his jump shot, perfecting his follow-through. He wants to expand his game to be able to stretch the floor and make threes, and I feel like in the offseason is where you work on stuff like that. So we’re working on little tedious things that just enhance what he has already.”

While the Czech Republic only boasted one NBA player themselves, Hawks wing Vít Krejčí, the nation ranked 19th in FIBA as of March compared to Portugal in 56th-place. That win alone marked progress for Queta’s country, while the games that now follow this weekend provide a measuring-stick for himself. On Friday, he’ll face NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and the Serbian national team that almost beat Team USA last summer, then Alperen Şengün and Turkey loom on Sunday. A matchup against his former teammate Porziņģis and Latvia awaits on Monday.

The top-four teams emerge from group play into the second round, so Latvia’s loss to Turkey and Portugal’s win on Wednesday created an unlikely opportunity. Queta and Portugal’s run could continue, and aid the momentum already behind the sport in Portugal. They defeated Spain for the first time ever earlier this month, Queta’s friend and business partner Andre Costa noticed more people playing in the streets, and his company Hoopers has hosted summer recreational leagues that aren’t typical for the country.

Many professionals leave the country, some have day jobs and basketball isn’t generally viewed as a business yet. Queta emerged from his youth club Barreirense near his hometown, made the leap to Benfica in Lisbon and earned a last-minute scholarship at Utah State that vaulted him to the NBA. Now, he embraces the weight he carries for Portugal, even if his low-key demeanor doesn’t befit the celebrity his championship with Boston drew his way.

“This is the fourth time in the history of FIBA that Portugal goes to that stage,” long-time Portuguese coach Carlos Barroca said as he ran Queta’s camp. “Of course, there’s a lot of excitement because Neemias is playing. We all know that the rules of the NBA are some restrictions on that, also some restrictions for the other teams, so of course we have a lucky card of having him being there representing Portugal, but we know that we also play with other teams that they have not one Neemias, they have a bunch of Neemias, so it’s gonna be tough for Portugal, but I think the pride of the country is really behind him, it’s very supportive and I think he’s gonna have a lot of fun, he’s gonna represent, which is the most important thing and we have at least hope that Portugal gets some wins.”

Neemias Queta just got ejected at a huge moment at EuroBasket

gettyimages-2233518177.jpg

Celtics center Neemias Queta was ejected from Wednesday’s EuroBasket Group Play game against Estonia after picking up his second technical foul. But, Portugal still pulled off a 68-65 win, behind 17 points from Rafael Lisboa.

Queta had just completed a tough finish around the basket when he seemingly taunted his Estonian opponents, yelling, ‘and-one.’

— Ian Inangelo (@iinangelo) September 3, 2025

At the time of Queta’s ejection, Portugal and Estonia were tied at 38 midway through the third quarter. Queta had a team-high 15 points (5-8 FG, 5-10 FT), 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal.

Portugal was 1-3 heading into Wednesday’s game, having beaten the Czech Republic and subsequently dropping games to Serbia, Turkey, and Latvia. Queta averaged 15 points on 60% shooting in the first four games of the tournament.

Both teams entered the afternoon with a 1-3 record in Group Play, so Portugal, the winner of Wednesday’s game, advanced to the knockout round for the first time in history.

Neemias Queta and Portugal advance to EuroBasket knockout round

gettyimages-2228699532.jpg

Neemias Queta watched the greatest moment in his country’s basketball history from the locker room. Rafael Lisboa, his friend since 15 and long-time teammate, recovered the ball after Portugal nearly lost it trailing by three points with one minute remaining. He shrugged off an erratic minute for the team on both ends, spotted up several steps behind the three-point line and knocked down a game-tying three that saved the team — and Queta.

A pair of technical fouls in rapid succession early in the third quarter could’ve left Queta with years of regret. Instead, Lisboa converted game-winning free throws moments after his iconic shot to defeat Estonia, 68-65, in a win-to-advance group play finale for Portugal. The Portuguese national team advanced to the knockout stage of EuroBasket for the first time in the country’s history, the kind of showcase for the country’s basketball progress Lisboa and Queta dreamt about throughout the summer.

“We know that we go there as underdogs,” Lisboa told CLNS Media/CelticsBlog in July at Queta’s Lisbon camp. “But our belief as a group is to try to pass the first phase and advance to the second round, so I think we have a team for that and we go there to try to fight for our country.”

Wins over the Czech Republic and Estonia proved upsets for a Portugal team that hadn’t won a EuroBasket game since 2007. They advanced to the second round of group play then, when the format involved a longer path to group play. The abbreviated schedule in this tournament set up Queta opposite Nikola Jokić and Alperen Şengün on back-to-back days before a third game in four days where he battled former teammate Kristaps Porziņģis. Portugal lost all three games decisively.

A fourth matchup in six days saw Queta start slowly, scoring one point in the first quarter before successfully turning to his fadeaway jumper in the second. But he missed three out of four free throw tries in the frame, keeping pace within five points despite leaving five of the nine points Portugal lost at the free throw line himself. He cleaned that up into the third, where he made 3-of-4 and jawed with Estonia’s Kasper Treier after drawing a foul that knocked him to the floor. They received offsetting technicals that initially benefited Portugal because FIBA rules meant that Treier picked up a fourth personal foul by drawing a tech. He went to the bench, but Queta earned a longer break four plays later when he yelled and-one in Matthias Tass’ face a go-ahead cutting finish.

“About that situation, I’m not gonna say a lot of things, just due to the respect I have for the game, the respect I have for all the players and the respect I have for all the coaches,” Portugal head coach Mário Gomes said. “I’m just going to say it’s very easy to make a call like that to a Portuguese player. About the team reaction, we didn’t know what will happen. With almost 15 minutes to play, we didn’t know. I’m a coach, I’m not a magician, I’m not a guru, I’m just coach. One thing I knew, after what happened, the team was going to react. The team was not going to throw the towel, as we used to say. It’s about character.”

Queta reached 15 points on 5-of-7 two point shooting despite his misses at the free throw line (5/10) and slow start. He grabbed three rebounds and recorded a steal and a block in 22 minutes, the increasing workload and condensed schedule a preview of what he’ll face with the Celtics this season. What he likely won’t see is the outsized attention defenses placed on him as Portugal built its offensive game plan around his skills. Without him, Lisboa needed to win his matchups and did. Portugal maintained its lead with a 9-8 run following Queta’s ejection, and a Lisboa three early in the fourth sparked a 3-for-6 finish with two assists.

Before his game-saving moments, Estonia’s screening actions disheveled Portugal’s defense and opened three shots from deep that thwarted a seven-point Portugal lead with 4:39 left. Estonia took a one-point lead, Portugal scrambled to create a drive-and-kick three that Diogo Ventura missed and went back the other way for a three-point Estonia edge. Travante Williams rushed into the half court and lost the ball for what looked like the decisive turnover, before it bounced right back to him and the Portuguese cleared the way for Lisboa.

The son of Portuguese legend Carlos Lisboa carried the country to its signature win with a long range three and isolation possession on the following set that fouled out Treier and gave Portugal a one point edge. Only months earlier, Lisboa recovered from surgery on his partially torn meniscus.

Miguel Queiroz dislodged the ball from Kristian Kullamae needing one more stop, and moments later, Queta emerged from the locker room singing, dancing and celebrating with his teammates. They’ll face Dennis Schröder, Daniel Theis and undefeated Germany in the knockout round on Saturday at 8:15 EST.

“I’m your fan,” Queta posted in Portuguese from the locker room in Portuguese. Sou vosso fã.

This Celtics employee missed just 11 games in 45 years. Now, he’s receiving one of the highest honors in basketball.

gettyimages-2232889541.jpg

For the last 45 years, Jeff Twiss has been a staple at Celtics games.

The Celtics Vice President of Basketball Relations — who began his career as an intern primarily tasked with driving then-head coach Red Auerbach and worked his way up to becoming the Celtics’ lead public relations person — has only missed 11 home games in 45 seasons.

On Friday, September 5th, Twiss will receive one of the highest honors from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame: the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor bestowed upon an international or national figure who has contributed greatly to the game of basketball.

Outside of enshrinement, it is the most prestigious award presented by the Hall of Fame — and has historically gone to decorated coaches, former players, and other trailblazers.

Twiss learned he was selected for the honor last February, after he received a call from the President of the Hall of Fame, John Doleva. Immediately, he assumed that the call signalled bad news. Perhaps, one of the Celtics’ championship trophies currently on display in Springfield was stolen or damaged — or worse.

So, when Doleva called, Twiss tensed up.

“He goes, ‘How are you doing?’” Twiss said. “I said, ‘Good, is there anything the matter?‘ He goes, ‘Oh, no. Are you sitting down?’

‘Then I said, ‘Oh, something is the matter. I figured sitting down meant ‘Oh no.’ I expected the worst. And he said, ‘No, no. I want to announce the Bunn Award winner, and that’s you.’ And I kind of went, ‘Are you sure you got the right guy?’“

Doleva did have the right guy. Twiss, who has spent 45 years with the Celtics, was used to being the one to facilitate other people’s awards, not his own. But after decades, it was time for his recognition.

Twiss grew up in Vermont and first planned on becoming a gym teacher. But, the Celtics were always in the back of his mind.

“I was always impressed and fascinated,” Twiss recalled. “How come the Celtics kept winning? How they do it year after year after year, and had some guy on the bench who smoked a cigar when they got it close to a victory. How did they do that? It was just fascinating to me, the whole culture of the Celtics back then.”

Eventually, Twiss got an internship working with the team.

“One of my duties was to drive Coach Auerbach around because Red and — God rest his soul — was a notoriously NASCAR Formula One driver,” Twiss said. “He had no rules, no holds barred, 100 miles an hour, straight through. If you’re in a way, get out of the way. That was him driving.”

Twiss loved the opportunity to be around the team, and so he worked toward getting a full-time job offer. Eventually, Auerbach offered him one: $10,500, two season tickets, and a company car.

“I stood up, shook his hand, walked out of the room, said, ‘Thank you very much,’ Twiss said. ‘And [he was like] ‘Now, go get to work. Get out of here.’ That was it. That’s how I got hired.”

Inside 45 years with the Celtics

Twiss has been a part of four Celtics championships: 1984, 1986, 2008, and 2024. But, even in the years were the team struggled, he observed that the special Garden atmosphere didn’t waver.

“The energy was still there,” Twiss said. “And I compliment the fans because — I’ll para quote Larry Bird on this. He says, ‘You can’t fool Boston Celtics fans. They know when you’re giving a good effort or when you’re dogging it, and you aren’t playing your best. As long as you give it a good effort, they’ll appreciate that. Win or lose.”

Today, Twiss manages the Celtics’ relationship with former players. He regularly sends out a newsletter with updates on what alumni are up to.

Last October, when the Celtics raised Banner 18, Twiss escorted a 96-year-old Bob Cousy onto the TD Garden parquet.

“Someone asked me, ‘You mind doing it? I said, ‘Mind doing it? I’ll pay to do it. Tell me when and where, I’m there. For Bob, I’d do anything.”

Twiss chuckled, recalling the special moment: “When I was starting to escort him out, he turned around and he goes, ‘Don’t mess this up.’”

Today, Twiss is working on a book in which he’ll chronicle his decades with the organization.

“No one’s really written from the perspective of being a front office employee, having the opportunity — not to boast or brag — for 20-some odd years, to drive Red Auerbach around to various engagements or preseason games,” Twiss said.

“After some of the stories you’re going to read, Noa, people are going to come after me and put on a straitjacket,” Twiss said. They aren’t going to believe me that this happened back in the era that it did, but it’ll be fun when it’s out there.”

In an in-depth interview on the You Got Boston podcast, Twiss discussed the highs and lows of a 45-year career, how the media landscape has changed, and more. You can watch the full podcast here.
