Highlights of Dave Sears’ post-draft interview with Paul Calvisi on The Big Red Rage Podcast

2025 NFL Draft - Round 1

What were the most common themes of the cardinals’ 2025 draft?

There is much to glean from what the Arizona Cardinals’ assistant GM Dave Sears told Paul Calvisi during his recent post-draft interview on The Big Red Rage Podcast.

For those of you who have not yet viewed the podcast, here is the link:

Dave Sears on Walter Nolen III, DT, Mississippi

  • He was not a “roll of the dice” for us —- “his tape isn’t a roll of the dice” —- “we spent enough time during the process (at the Senior Bowl and during Walter’s Top 30 visit to Arizona) that we felt very comfortable with him as a person.”
  • “Aggressive, violent quick, disruptive player who has the versatility to play anywhere from 5 to 0 technique.”

Let’s have some interactive fun on this.

We are going to assign an ROTB member to highlight what Dave Sears revealed about the following players (post your highlights in the comment section —- plus, for extra credit, please share your own thoughts about the player):

  • Will Johnson, CB, Michigan —- RedC
  • Jordan Burch, DE, Oregon —- Jethro Bodine
  • Cory Simon, LB, Ohio St. —- SunDevil99
  • Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio St. —- RyanMac7
  • Hayden Conner, G, Texas —- since61

For everyone else, pick one of these 5 draft picks (Rounds 2-6) and tell us your thoughts about the player. Let’s do a deep dive here.

Here is mine:

Kitan Crawford, S, Nevada, 5-11, 202

Dave Sears was not asked about Kitan Crawford; thus I am going to predict what Sears would have said and then add my own thoughts:

Texas transfer to Nevada who played an outstanding brand of safety for Nevada in 2024.

Has played over 1,000 special teams’ snaps throughout his college career.

2024 stats: 76 tackles (led team), 3 TFLs, 2 INTs with 1 returned for TD (52-yard pick-six vs. Oregon St.), 7 PBUs, FF, 88.8 pass coverage grade (PFF)

Was the overall 2nd highest graded safety (Athleticism Grade of 89 per nfl.com) at the Combine, posting these measurables:

  • 40 —- 4.41
  • 10-yard split —- 1.52
  • Vertical —- 41,5”
  • Broad —- 10’ 8”
  • 3-Cone —- 6.81
  • 20-yard Shuttle —- 4.03
  • 225 reps —- 18
  • Lance Zierlein of nfl.com projected Kitan Crawford as a 4th or 5th round pick.

When I had heard of the Cardinals’ interest in Kitan Crawford during the pre-draft, the more I watched his tape and researched his background, the more excited I became. I had been mocking him to the Cardinals in Round 7 but was worried he would be taken earlier on Day 3.

On the 2nd play of the video, check out the textbook way he breaks down and wraps up to make the tackle for loss.

Check out his two interceptions, the first being his pick six versus Oregon St.

Check out how fluidly he runs with the ball in his hands.

Check out the pass breakups he makes from the slot.

When I go to a player’s tape, the first thing I always try to assess is the player’s feet. Check out Kitan’s feet. He’s nifty. I was able to check off that box right from the get-go.

Kitan is going to have to add more strength to play in the box in the NFL. He dogs his man from the slot and on runs and screens he gets downhill to the ball very quickly. As a rookie, Kitan could be a key contributor on special teams and has the daily opportunity to embrace and learn from Budda Baker’s keen understanding of the position.

Dave Sears revealed two key themes:

  1. The Cardinals were surprised and delighted to see that each player they selected was on the board when the team was on the clock.
  2. The Cardinals selected the player in each round that was #1 on their board. They didn’t necessarily come into the draft thinking their first 5 picks would be on defensive players, yet they stuck to their board.

Kudos, as usual, to Paul Calvisi for conducting such an informational, eye-opening interview.

Arizona Cardinals open season as road favorites over New Orleans Saints

Syndication: USA TODAY

Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals are favorites in their season opener for the first time since 2016.

Happy Thursday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals know their 2025 NFL schedule now and they once again open on the road, but this season against a team in flux.

The Cardinals open things up in 2025 with an early road game against the New Orleans Saints, and according to our friends over at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Arizona Cardinals open as 4.5-point favorites.

That is not surprising with what is going on in New Orleans, as they will be starting either Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler... or other, at quarterback after Derek Carr retired.

However, as Arizona Cardinals fans, road favorites are more of an anomaly than something we are used to seeing.

Add to that the Cardinals have not opened the season as favorites in a game since 2016 and this is a new feeling for Arizona Cardinals fans.

So that begs the question, are you taking the Cardinals to cover in week one?

What is your reaction to Wilson’s video?

NFL pundits like Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport seemed to know that the Cardinals have been working on a schedule “banger” video. Well, my oh my, this video, rapped and orchestrated by Cardinals' LB Mack Wilson Jr. is a banger all right.

NFL Holidays all about the Mahomes-guided Chiefs and it’s Festivus for most the rest of us

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Pittsburgh Steelers

Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Can Kyler Murray and the Cardinals shine for Festivus?

When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, America’s teams were the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.

While the Dallas Cowboys went 7-10 in 2024, the NFL in 2025 decided to give them 6 primetime games —- the second most for any team, tied with the Super Bowl LIX Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

What a rook.

The Kansas City Chiefs lead the NFL with seven prime-time games this season pic.twitter.com/4TM46K8lOM

— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) May 15, 2025

But move over Cowboys —- America’s team these days is clearly the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sure, having adoring Taylor Swift fans increase the Chiefs’ national viewership by a profitable margin certainly helps —- but the majority of the credit of the Kansas City allure goes to iconic quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the ultimate straw that stirs the Chiefs’ holiday punch.

Just as Tom Brady of the New England Patriots was either adored, revered, envied or despised by the millions of NFL fans, the baton of the QB G.O.A.T. of the decade has been passed to the ultra-crafty Mahomes, who will not only run around and turn busted plays into touchdowns, he will do it when necessary by gutting through third degree ankle sprains —- and he will deliver some jaw-dropping performances with an uncanny display of euphoric bounce and pure hustle.

Like the saying goes, “you cannot stop Patrick Mahomes, you can only hope to contain him.”

With the NFL granting the Chiefs 7 primetime games for the upcoming season, slating them to play premier games on Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is no longer any doubt that America’s team of the 2020s is the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The league should have to chip in a stipend for all the ways the league is benefitting.”

*Checks notes* that stipend is striped. https://t.co/dKN4O1NaEb

— Nettles11 (@Nettles111) May 16, 2025

Patrick Mahomes’ ascension to NFL prominence has underscored the critical importance of two necessities:

  1. A QB’s uncanny feel, grit and fearlessness to consistently excel at the position.
  2. The competitive tenor, coaching acumen and roster-building prowess of the team that drafts or acquires him.

Let’s take a close look at the last 12 QBs to win Super Bowls:

  • Super Bowl 48: Russell Wilson (Malcolm Smith), 2TDs —- 2012 pick #75
  • Super Bowl 49: Tom Brady (MVP), 4TDs —- 2000 pick #199
  • Super Bowl 50: Peyton Manning (Von Miller), 0TDs —- 1998 pick #1
  • Super Bowl 51: Tom Brady (MVP), 2TDs
  • Super Bowl 52: Nick Foles (MVP), 3 TDs —- 2012 pick #88
  • Super Bowl 53: Tom Brady (Julian Edelman), 0TDs
  • Super Bowl 54: Patrick Mahomes (MVP), 2 TDs —- 2017 pick #10
  • Super Bowl 55: Tom Brady (MVP), 3 TDs
  • Super Bowl 56: Matthew Stafford (Cooper Kupp), 3 TDs —- 2009 pick #1
  • Super Bowl 57: Patrick Mahomes (MVP), 3 TDs
  • Super Bowl 58: Patrick Mahomes (MVP), 2 TDs
  • Super Bowl 59: Jalen Hurts (MVP), 2 TDs —- 2020 pick #53

How many of these QBs were top 5 picks in their draft class?

  • Peyton Manning
  • Matthew Stafford

Yet, when Peyton Manning won Super Bowl 50 (Broncos) and Matthew Stafford won Super Bowl 56 (Rams), neither was playing for the team that drafted them.

Over the past 25-years, Peyton Manning is the only Top 5 draft pick QB to win the Super Bowl with his original team.

This is why, for example:

Caleb Williams and his family weighed circumventing the entire 2024 NFL Draft to avoid the CBA and considering signing with the United Football League.

Precedents:

Exhibit A:

John Elway refused to play for the Baltimore Colts. Before the Draft Elway made it clear he wasn’t going to play for the Colts. Elway and Manning both won 2 Super Bowls. Both San Diego and Baltimore had their franchises move to another city! #hmmm

— Dan Coleman (@DanielColeman) April 28, 2025

Exhibit B:

Eli Manning's refusal to play for the Chargers led to the Giants trading for his rights in 2004 #NFLDraftCountdown pic.twitter.com/Phgm6UhTDC

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) April 28, 2016

John Elway won two Super Bowls with the Broncos.

Eli Manning won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants.

Would Eli Manning have won a Super Bowl or two with the Chargers?

Like the Cardinals, the Chargers have only played in one Super Bowl and have consistently been regarded as having sub-par ownership. The Chargers in 1995 lost to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26 in Super Bowl XXIX.

Fluke or Fate?

Tom Brady has become the most famous 6th round pick in NFL history. He found himself with the right team, the right owner and the right head coach at the right time. When he got his opportunity to play, he managed to ace one test after the next.

Patrick Mahomes has become the poster boy for 1st Round draft trade super steals —- what are the odds that a playoff team that already had a Pro Bowl QB would be able to trade up from pick #27 to pick #10 with a QB-needy team at the time, no less, in the Buffalo Bills, for:

  • 2017 —- pick #27 —- CB Tre’Davious White,
  • 2017 —- pick #91 —- Bills then traded it to Rams to move up to pick #37 to take WR Zay Jones.
  • 2018 —- pick #22 —- Bills used it to trade up with Ravens to pick #16 for LB Tremaine Edmunds

Good news for Bills in 2018, they were able to trade up with the Bucs to pick #7 where they selected QB Josh Allen.

The not so good news for the Bills and Josh Allen this far, their 0-4 playoff record versus the Chiefs and Mahomes.

What are Kyler Murray’s chances for winning a Super Bowl with the Cardinals?

The odds currently are not in the Cardinals’ or Kyler Murray’s favor. But, what if?

QBs selected in picks #1-#5 to win Super Bowls with the team that drafted them:

  1. Bob Griese, Dolphins, #4 pick in 1967 draft.
  2. Terry Bradshaw, Steelers, #1 pick in 1970 draft.
  3. Jim McMahon, Bears, #5 pick in 1982 draft.
  4. Troy Aikman, Cowboys, #1 pick in 1989 draft.
  5. Peyton Manning, Colts, #1 pick in 1998 draft.

Anomalies:

  1. Jeff Hostetler, Giants, pick #59 in 1984 draft.
  2. Mark Rypien, Redskins, pick #146 in 1986 draft.
  3. Kurt Warner, Rams, CFA in 1994.
  4. Brad Johnson, Buccaneers, pick #227 in 1992 draft.
  5. Nick Foles, Eagles, pick #88 in 2012 draft.

The Cardinals’ organization is in the third year of a complete makeover. GM Monti Ossenfort and his staff have made significant improvements to the Cardinals’ roster and were able to increase their win totals from 4 to 8 from season 1 to season 2. Monti Ossenfort, head coach Jonathan Gannon and offensive coordinator Drew Petzing have consistently maintained their faith in Kyler Murray’s talent and improved dedication.

Like Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray can run around and make improv throws with the best of them. In fact, Kyler Murray presents a more daunting threat as a runner.

What Kyler needs to do to give himself and the Cardinals a fighting chance (the kind of things that Mahomes does extremely well):

  • (1) get stronger as the season goes on;
  • (2) do a grittier job of playing through nagging injuries;
  • (3) make consistently clutch plays during the team’s potential playoff-clinching and division-clinching games;
  • (4) not give up a little too quickly on key third down conversions;
  • (5) in the 2-minute drill, not be so reliant on time-consuming, short yardage check downs;
  • (6) keep his head up when, out of frustration and discouragement, he has been apt to hang his head.

Only three #1 picks in the history of the NFL have won a Super Bowl with the team that drafted them. On the flip side, the anomalies attest to the fact that a QB can get hot at the right place at the right time.

Though the odds for winning a Super Bowl may seem slim, Kyler Murray has a chance.

The Cardinals in 2025 need to make the most of Festivus. You know, for the rest of us.

NFL fans prefer to watch their teams play on Sunday

When do you like to watch your team play?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Friday one and all, we have made it.

As we digest the 2025 NFL schedule, we know that the Arizona Cardinals have two primetime games on the schedule this season.

They could have more later in the season, but for now, that is one more than last year.

That begs the question, with the Cardinals primetime games on Thursday and Monday Nights, what day of the week do you prefer to watch your team play?

NFL Fans overwhelmingly prefer to watch their teams play on Sundays.

It makes sense, but I do have a slight devils advocate take.

I prefer to watch my team play solo, so I can enjoy all the games on Sunday.

For me, I enjoy watching football, and while I prefer the Cardinals, they’re not always the best football watching experience.

So, for me, being able to enjoy and take in the Cardinals game, while getting a full array of other games in is ideal. We know that is a rare occurrence, so I enjoy the two to three times a year it happens (usually one or two prime time games and a bye week).

Interested in your take.

PFF Names the Arizona Cardinals most underrated player

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

Who is the Arizona Cardinals most underrated player? PFF says Garrett Williams

Having a player underrated is an interesting concept, because the question becomes who is doing the rating?

That’s why when PFF dropped their list of most underrated players on each team I was interested who they would have for the Arizona Cardinals.

I am not surprised on who they have, but am because I feel like PFF has been banging the drum for Garrett Williams.

ARIZONA CARDINALS: CB GARRETT WILLIAMS

“Williams operated as the Cardinals’ primary slot cornerback in 2024, delivering the second-best PFF coverage grade (83.7) among qualifying cornerbacks in the regular season. He is set to once again man the slot in 2025 after allowing just a 25.9% first-down-plus-touchdown rate in coverage there this past season — tied for the seventh-best mark among 114 qualifying slot cornerbacks.”

“Williams also let up just 0.67 yards per coverage snap while working out of the slot, which was a top-five mark.”

So, is PFF saying Williams is underrated by the consensus outside of Cardinals fans and PFF? I would probably agree with that sentiment.

Anyway you slice it, Williams is going to get recognized if he continues playing at the same level. And deservedly so.

Arizona Cardinals finally putting an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball

2025 NFL Draft - Round 1

The Arizona Cardinals have been a bad defense for a long time.

The Arizona Cardinals have not had a good defense in a while.

Well, at least according to PFF, who have their own grades and the last seven seasons have ranked in the bottom 10 in defense.

So, when PFF talked about the takeaways from the 2025 NFL Draft, they thought one of the biggest takeaways was seeing Jonathan Gannon put his stamp on the defense, finally.

From PFF:

Jonathan Gannon put his stamp on the roster

The Cardinals have ranked in the bottom 10 in team defense grade in each of the past seven seasons — a streak head coach Jonathan Gannon is determined to end. Arizona invested heavily in defensive reinforcements this offseason, both in free agency and the draft. The most notable upgrades came along the defensive line, where the team added veterans Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell before drafting Walter Nolen in the first round.

Campbell led all interior defenders with an 85.9 run-defense grade last season, while Nolen finished second in the FBS with a 91.6 run-defense grade at Ole Miss. With that infusion of talent, the Cardinals should be much more formidable up front in 2025.

The Cardinals last had a top ten NFL defense in 2015.

Since then they have fielded the 31st or 32nd ranked defense three times.

So, for the Cardinals to finally put an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball is nice to see.

We will see how that goes with the on field product, but finally investing on the defensive side of the ball is something that has been missing for years.

I am not sure whether any of us Cardinals’ fans have ever seen an off-season where the team is this engaged with each other, engaged with former players and, just as importantly, engaged with the community.

This weekend’s event, Kyler Murray’s Foundation Charity Softball Game was, by all accounts, a walk-off grand slam.

Commentary:

As a teacher, I always felt that the ideal classroom scenario was to create the kind of unity and commitment from the students that inevitably would compel them to take ownership of the curriculum.

From the looks of all of the recent charity events that the Cardinals’ players have carefully planned and hosted —-> and all of the practicing they have been conducting with each other —-> in addition to the players taking command of the team’s schedule release “banger” via the singing of a teammate’s original rap song —-> the ownership of this team is tucked away in the hands of the Cardinals’ players.

Kudos to the teachers in the building, starting with GM Monti Ossenfort and HC Jonathan Gannon, for setting the energetic tone and for inspiring the players to take the proverbial ball and run with it.

Real winning in life and on the football field —-> looks very much like what the Cardinals’ players are drawing and drumming up!

You know you the team has something special brewing when a rookie like Walter Nolen III says his primary goal is to help the team win on account of all the effort his teammates have been putting into their work.

This ain’t Kool Aid.

Because —-> this isn’t just talking the talk.

This is Gatorade!

Because —-> this is walking the walk!

Big difference.

Y’think?

Kyler Murray’s #1 passing improvement: catchable ball rate of 20+ yards with no pressure

Come watch and analyze all of Kyler Murray’s 20+ yard open throws in 2024

@FantasyPtsDate has pinpointed the area of Kyler Murray’s passing game that needs the most improvement, thanks to the relay here by Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23):

Kyler Murray delivered a 51% catchable ball rate on throws of 20+ air yards without pressure in 2024.

QB24 out of 33 qualifiers

(Source: @FantasyPtsData)

Only Mac Jones had a worse highly-accurate throw rate when targeting an open receiver on such passes. https://t.co/cztuyWWeJN pic.twitter.com/JRiATubrRs

— Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23) May 20, 2025

Do yourself a favor and take the time and effort to watch the short video of every one of Kyler’s 20+ yard passes in 2024 while he was under no or very limited pressure.

Essentially, for every good, on-target pass, Kyler has an off-target throw.

  • Catchable: 51%
  • Off-target: 49%

Commentary:

  • Credit the Cardinals’ offensive line and their blocking schemes. Further evidence of the under-rated quality of their performance.
  • Credit the Cardinals’ receivers for creating consistent passing windows. Further evidence of their much-scrutinized ability to get a step or two ahead of the coverage.
  • Credit Kyler Murray’s nifty feet for creating his launching points via drop backs, sprint outs, bootlegs and waggles.
  • The stat that is most impressive (combination of OL, WRs. TEs, QB) —- QB10 on 39 open pass attempts. Doesn’t that stat surprise you? Strong credit here goes to Drew Petzing and the offensive coaches.
  • This 20+ yard open passes tape corroborates Drew Petzing’s insistence that the scheme isn’t poor, it’s more a matter of the players achieving more consistent execution.
  • When Kyler Murray steps into his throws, his completion percentages are higher and his passes arrive quickly and more on time.
  • When Kyler Murray arches backward and loop throws off his back foot, his completion percentages are significantly lower —- because the ball tends to float long enough that defenders are able to recover.
  • The point is —- these are throws made with limited are no pressure —- and therefore, Kyler’s throwing off his back foot is often avoidable. The adjustments here are immediately correctable.
  • Michael Wilson and Trey McBride deserve credit for the percentages of “contested catches” that they make in these situations.
  • Marvin Harrison Jr. was not as consistent at making contested catches as a rookie. However, this has a very good chance to become one of the real strengths of his game. He and Kyler have been working consistently every passing session on 50/50 balls. Marvin’s added strength this off-season could make a significant difference. Kyler having another off-season to meld with Marvin should make a significant difference. Combine that with more throws that Kyler can make stepping into his passes and the results this year could be magnificent.
  • Furthermore, as the chart suggests, imagine what the Cardinals could accomplish if Kyler and crew can cash in on secondary targets. You know, the old “look one way and throw the other.” Percentage of throws targeting “first read” receivers was 82%, which was 25th in the NFL.
  • It feels very wise of MOJO and Drew Petzing to focus this off-season on improving Kyler Murray’s timing and chemistry with the trio of the Cardinals’ talented, young receivers: TE Trey McBride (R2 2022), WR Michael Wilson (R3 2023) and Marvin Harrison Jr. (R1 2024). This video is a showcase of their vast potential.

Cardinals Reacts Survey: Who breaks out for the Arizona Cardinals in 2025?

Arizona Cardinals v Los Angeles Rams

Who breaks out in the 2025 season for the Arizona Cardinals?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Wednesday one and all.

We are in the dead time, but for the Arizona Cardinals we have some questions, and one question we have is about who we think could take the next step for the Arizona Cardinals.

While Marvin Harrison Jr. is an easy answer, so who else could we see breakout in 2025?

Darius Robinson only got action in six games and had 10 total tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss.

Max Melton played in 17 games, had three starts, but did okay, had five passes defensed, a forced fumble, while having 51 tackles total.

Trey Benson had 291 yards on 63 carries and a touchdown.

Isaiah Adams had five starts.

Michael Wilson through two seasons has played in 29 games and has 1,113 yards on 85 receptions and seven touchdowns.

Is there anyone else you could see breakout?

Arizona Cardinals place Sean Murphy-Bunting on reserve/non-football injury list

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have placed their veteran cornerback on the non-football injury list.

The Arizona Cardinals have been aggressive in adding cornerbacks all offseason, and now that aggressiveness is making sense.

Ian Rapoport announced the team has placed veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the reserve/non-football injury list.

The #AZCardinals have placed CB Sean Murphy-Bunting on the reserve/non-football injury list, ending his 2025 season before it began.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 22, 2025

Murphy-Bunting is done for the 2025 NFL season, so the Cardinals adding Will Johnson and Denzel Burke, to a room that was pretty full, makes sense.

We even wondered why the team continued during the offseason, after the 2025 NFL Draft, to bring in veteran cornerbacks like Asante Samuel Jr.

Now the question becomes how does this get handled? The Arizona Cardinals are not obligated to pay Murphy-Bunting’s 2025 salary now since he was injured away from the team in non-football activity.

So, do they just move on for breach of contract, do they toll the contract, not pay in ‘25 and bring him back in 2026, or do they pay a portion/negotiate a buyout?

Murphy-Bunting signed a three-year $25.5 million contract last offseason, and followed it up with three interceptions in 16 games.

He was the lone veteran presence in the secondary teeming with young talent. So, do the Cardinals continue to pursue a veteran talent?

PFF Names the three best players on the Arizona Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

Who are the best three players on the Arizona Cardinals?

Happy Thursday one and all.

As we get into the summer doldrums we get into the listacles of it all. We can bring in daily, or weekly looks at different rankings, where the Cardinals fall, etc, but sometimes I like to look at what others outside of this site, and quite frankly Jess’ site think of the Arizona Cardinals.

This week, PFF listed the three best players on the Arizona Cardinals, and to be honest, it wasn’t a surprise.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

TE TREY McBRIDE

QB KYLER MURRAY

S BUDDA BAKER

McBride took a major leap in 2024, ascending into the top tier of NFL tight ends. His 89.8 receiving grade ranked second among all tight ends, trailing only George Kittle. Murray delivered his closest approximation yet to his peak form, posting a 4.7% big-time throw rate, his highest since 2021. Baker also bounced back in 2024, recording a career-best 77.8 overall grade and a 74.7 coverage grade.

The top three are pretty easy to see. While McBride may be the only player on the Cardinals roster right now who has a claim to be the best in the league at his position, Murray and Baker are squarely in the discussion for being some of the top 10-12 at their position as well.

Maybe James Conner can make that claim, but his numbers were right on the border of top 12 in almost all categories.

It will be interesting to see if Murray can continue to climb back up, and how long Baker can hold onto that spot, also will be interesting to see if McBride can follow-up that career year.

Cardinals’ Secondary Summer School 2025

NFL: Washington Commanders at Arizona Cardinals

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Are new lesson plans in the Cardinals’ pass coverage techniques a priority?

Pictured above are three significant building blocks of the Arizona Cardinals’ 2025 secondary: S Budda Baker, CB Garrett Williams and CB Max Melton.

S Budda Baker

Budda Baker heads into year 9 with 4 NFL All-Pro awards (two 1st team, two 2nd team) and 7 Pro Bowls.

Budda Baker isn't talked about enough. The 4x All-Pro and 7x Pro Bowler is one of the best players in the NFL. #BirdGang pic.twitter.com/HMGMteYhuP https://t.co/SvQ4Yo0ywT

Urgent play-style. You want to coach guys like this. @NFLMatchup pic.twitter.com/PYC33mOsJ6

— Matt Bowen (@MattBowen41) November 18, 2020

Is there any safety in the NFL who runs the alley and takes down the ball carriers the way Budda Baker consistently does?

2025 Role Possibilities:

  • Team Captain
  • Game plan advisor
  • Cover 2 safety
  • Box safety versus the run and in playing the flat in zone coverage

CB Garrett Williams

Garrett Williams (#21) has turned into a standout player for the Cardinals. Love his versatility. https://t.co/mr8Efx0fuH pic.twitter.com/PA0gqG3FuM

Arizona Cardinals DB Garrett Williams ranked by PFF the 6th best cornerback in the NFL.

— Bo Brack (@BoBrack) January 9, 2025

It should be interesting to see what the Cardinals’ coaches’ plans are for Garrett Williams this season. Garrett is ultra versatile. He can play outside corner, slot corner and free safety —- all three positions at a very high and potentially masterful level.

The coaches’ role for Garrett Williams in 2024 was curious. They seemed to want to disguise him in different areas of the field. He is called a slot CB, yet when games were on the line, too often the coaches did not assign GW to the opponents’ top slot WR. Hard to fathom, given the alternatives, isn’t it?

2025 Role Possibilities:

  • Starter at outside CB
  • Primarily employed as the team’s slot CB
  • Employed at times at a Cover 2 safety
  • Zone coverage bandit

CB Max Melton

Will Max Melton take a big step forward in his sophomore season?pic.twitter.com/2j727UoPb8

— Kyle Odegard (@Kyle_Odegard) May 22, 2025

Max Melton started to play his best football during the Cardinals’ winning streak before the bye week. What makes him special for the Cardinals, in addition to his high upside in Cover 2 and Cover 3 zones is his man coverage ability. Dude runs a 4.39 and jumps 40.5”. Look at Max track down Ohio St, stud RB TreVeyon Henderson to save a TD. This is truly outstanding effort and speed:

The play I know sold JG and Monti on Max Melton. Here he is out of the play on the other side of the field hustling, showing off his 4.3 speed to save a TD. This is what it means to be a Cardinals in the Monti/JG era. pic.twitter.com/HRW8xdpxrW

— K1SinceDay1 (@KSzn2021) April 28, 2024

2025 Role Possibilities:

  • Starter at RCB
  • Designated matchup man coverage “go-to guy”
  • At times, playing slot CB versus teams with good dual slot WRs

So, Budda, Garrett and Max are the first three buildings block for the Cardinals’ secondary in 2025.

Then, which players in the secondary will emerge as the next three building blocks?

My hunch?

  • S Dadrion Taylor Demerson —- possible starter at FS
  • CB Will Johnson —- possible starter at LCB
  • CB Elijah Jones —- possible starter at LCB and inserted at RCB when Max Melton is moved into the slot or used as designated man cover assignee.

In the mix:

  • S Jalen Thompson —- box safety and sub package contributor
  • CB Starling Thomas V—- backup to Max Melton at RCB and designated man coverage assignee.
  • CB Kei’Trel Clark —- backup for Garrett Williams in the slot.
  • CB Denzel Burke —- cover 2 and 3 zone CB

ROTB Question: Which three players (after Budda, Garrett and Max) do you see merging as the Cardinals’ building blocks?

The State Farm 2nd Year Leap?

— Bo Brack (@BoBrack) May 20, 2025

Cardinals Secondary Summer School 2025:

Syncing up the team’s zone and man coverages in the secondary and with the linebackers during OTAs, mini-camps and training camp has to be Nick Rallis’ number one challenge and priority, especially now that the Cardinals have much improved run stopping and pass rushing talent.

That said, it would be very wise, imo, for Jonathan Gannon to use at least two of the pre-season games (2 series or so per game) with the starters as key opportunities to synchronize the pass coverages, especially in light of the young talent in the secondary and at inside linebacker.

Great defense involves superb communication that is developed through hundreds of reps. While it is a standard practice to rotate defensive linemen in order to keep then playing fast and powerful, this year it may be wise for Nick Rallis to try to settle on a specific lineup of linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties that would ensure the Cardinals of an advantageous semblance of continuity.

Iconic UCLA basketball coach John Wooden maintained a philosophy that (to paraphrase) “if you have two very good players at one position, start one of them and play him the most minutes you can —- because that way, at least one player is happy, instead of two players walking around unhappy.”

Aside from committing to a player’s development and building the player’s confidence, what John Wooden’s philosophy tries to ensure is the precious value of continuity.

For two years we have seen the Cardinals shuffle players in and out on defense like hockey shifts —- and that strategy, while it gave numerous players the opportunity to play —- consistently appeared to detract from the team’s continuity.

Did you know that opposing QBs versus the Cardinals were able to complete 4 out of every 5 passes?

More on this later.

With all the impressive depth of talent that the Cardinals now possess on defense, it would be tempting to try play them all, at times. But, for the sake of continuity, especially in being a zone coverage-heavy defense, such temptation should take a back seat to trying to keep the best players on the field as a unified whole.

Some pundits are speculating that the Cardinals, now that they have lost CB Sean Murphy-Bunting for the season, will be looking to sign a veteran CB. In my opinion, the Cardinals are better off focusing in on the impressively diverse talent they have acquired at the cornerback position. For three reasons; (1) one of the great advantages of working with younger players is that the coaches get to teach them their own methods, whereas with veterans they typically are inured to other methods. (2) For whatever reasons, the past two years, the younger players at CB have played better than the older ones, which may further corroborate point #1. (3) Look at how well and quickly the Chiefs and Eagles incorporated their young draft picks in their secondaries by starting them and committing to them from day one. Good, young secondaries are in vogue these days.

Furthermore, in light of the loss of Sean Murphy-Bunting, while the CB talent and depth is more than sufficient, it may be of even greater importance for the Cardinals to hold on tight to veteran safety Jalen Thompson for his leadership and versatility, assuming that JT can agree to playing a more niched role in the defense this season.

For the past couple of years the Cardinals’ zone coverages have been very easy to exploit. It has been difficult to understand how Gannon’s zones are being taught, because so much of what we have seen in terms of stationary feet, receivers easily crossing the faces of linebackers without any real legitimate attempt to cover them through their zones and preposterously over-excessive cushions have been alarming.

Effective zones involve man-to-man principles within each area of the zone. Every team needs the athletes to do it —- and this is exactly why inside linebackers today are 225 with 4.4-4.5 speed.

Eagles’ fans and pundits were often frustrated with Jonathan Gannon’s coverage schemes and lack of aggression, as articulated in this December 2022 “Inside Eagles” article:

Dissecting theories on Jonathan Gannon’s perceived lack of aggression (insidetheiggles.com)

2024 NFC West Pressure Valves:

As most of you know, I am of the Hubie Brown school of thought that defensive pressure can be best gauged by how many times defenders get their hands on the ball.

Team —— Pass Breakups —— Interceptions —— QB RTG

  • ARI —————26 ————————-9————————102.7
  • LAR ————-40 ————————14————————100.5
  • SF —————-46 ————————-11————————-96.3
  • SEA ————-39 ————————--13 ————————97.4

Do you notice that the team with the most combined PBUs and INTs had the lowest QB RTG?

The Cardinals’ completion percentage on defense was 74.9% while the Rams’, 49ers’ and Seahawks’ were all tied at 70.0%

Think of that, dudes, virtually 4 of every 5 passes versus the Cardinals’ defense were completed, throughout an entire season.

Jonathan Gannon appears to have given Nick Rallis the full autonomy to coordinate, run and call the Cardinals’ defense. While Rallis’ defensive alignments and basic schemes appear to be very much akin to the ones that Jonathan Gannon ran with the Eagles, Nick Rallis, by necessity, with an assist from Budda Baker, has expanded the team’s run and pass blitz packages in a highly creative manner. The new knowledge of Rallis’ schemes recently gleaned by the Cardinals’ rookie 2nd round pick, CB Will Johnson, had him sounding very excited.

"Just allows me to make those plays you saw me make in college."

CB Will Johnson on the #AZCardinals' defensive scheme, which earlier he called "a cornerback's dream."

-@CraigAZSports pic.twitter.com/wrdLoYSVEe

— Arizona Cardinals Insiders (@AZCardsInsiders) May 8, 2025

Therefore, one can hope that the much of the Cardinals’ 2025 Secondary Summer School will involve new and astute lesson plans in the teaching, coordination and efficiency of man, zone and combo coverages.

The 2025 NFC West Pressure Valve numbers are apt to be of paramount importance. Right now, it’s a clean slate. Anyone want to volunteer to track those numbers on a weekly basis?

Arizona Cardinals sign linebacker J.J. Russell

NFC Wild Card Playoffs: Washington Commanders v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Arizona Cardinals add a linebacker with some experience.

The Arizona Cardinals have made a small roster move, adding linebacker J.J. Russell.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed linebacker J.J. Russell and has released linebacker Milo Eifler. The signing took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Russell (6-1, 225) joins the Cardinals after spending his first three NFL seasons (2022-24) with the Tampa Bay who signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Memphis in 2022. With the Buccaneers, Russell appeared in 30 games (four starts) during the regular season and totaled 36 tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack and two passes defensed on defense while adding 13 tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams.

Last season, he set career highs in games played (16), starts (3), tackles (25) and passes defensed (2) while also setting a career mark with eight tackles and his first fumble recovery on special teams. Russell started Tampa Bay’s Wild Card matchup last season and had two tackles on defense and a tackle on special teams in his postseason debut.

Russell will wear jersey number #51.

Russell will be an interesting camp body with a shot to make the roster due to his experience, but the Cardinals have added three off ball linebackers this offseason, so we will see where he fits in.

Happy Sunday and Memorial Day Weekend everyone.

I am taking the family out of town for the next four days, but will be back to check in if anything happens with your Arizona Cardinals.

However, earlier this week we asked which player that Monti Ossenfort has drafted that you think breaks out this year and the overwhelming majority agreed.

Here are this weeks Arizona Cardinals Reacts results:

I am not surprised in the least to see Darius Robinson at the top, but I am a bit surprised to see Trey Benson as the number two on this list.

Benson is going to once again be the lead backup for James Conner, so are we expecting a closer split in usage or Conner to be hurt?

Interesting secondary results, but I think we can all agree that we are excited to see all the players listed take the next step.

Homage to Pat Tillman on Memorial Day

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

The student, player, soldier and person

When Arizona State’s 1997 PAC-10 Defensive Player of the Year, linebacker Pat Tillman, was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 7th round of the 1998 NFL Draft, I jumped to my feet out of supreme elation.

During my draft preparation that year, once I started reviewing Pat’s stellar play on tape and began digging deeper into his background, Pat Tillman the extraordinary person started to shine through.

You’ll see exactly what I mean if you re-watch this video, a video that to this day gives me goosebumps:

Pat Tillman: 7th Round Pick to All-Pro Safety | Pat Tillman: A Football Life | NFL Films (youtube.com)

There was a question as to whether Pat Tillman, as a smaller than average linebacker, could make it in the NFL. But that question never ever crossed my mind. Not when you look at the player because Pat Tillman had NFL feet, he brought NFL tackling prowess and he possessed a 14-carat NFL-caliber heart of gold.

As a high school football coach, I always recruited my players to take my AP English class when they were juniors or seniors The first reason applied to how much I wanted to have their leadership in my everyday classroom. This upset a number of my colleagues because students who signed up for AP classes had to be recommended by their teacher.

But there was one way to get around the teacher-recommendation pre-requisite —- a student’s parents could go to the guidance office and fill out a consent form that would enable their son (or daughter) to enroll in the class, regardless of what their previous grades or recommendations were.

The second reason why I wanted my players in class was to challenge their intellects and help to broaden their horizons. So often, I have found, high school students succumb to thinking they are simply average students. That, and they just want to take what they consider to be the easiest path to a diploma. It always annoyed me that “jocks” were considered dumb as rocks.

The more I looked into Pat Tillman’s background, the more it occurred to me that he would be the ultimate student to have in an AP class, or any class, for that matter. Pat Tillman’s intellectual curiosity was through the roof —- literally and figuratively. While at ASU, he used to ride his bike over the nearest water tower. With his backpack strapped to his shoulders, Pat would climb up the long thin ladder to go sit at the top of the structure where he could be alone with whatever book he was reading (by flashlight) or be alone with the stars as he so often contemplated the meaning of life, philosophy and religion.

The point is —- not only did Pat Tillman have the feet, the tackling ability and the heart to make a splash in the NFL, perhaps most of all —- he had the intellect. As today’s NFL fans well know, there is a processing of information element that is requisite to each player’s job description in the NFL. Well, Pat Tillman was the kind of player who would know every aspect of the defensive playbook with its myriads of nuances in a matter of days.

Pat Tillman graduated summa cum laude from ASU, with a 3.85 GPA.

Players can only go “150 miles per hours all the time” when they know and understand the playbook by heart. Pat Tillman understood this.

My favorite Pat Tillman moment during his four highly productive years with the Cardinals was when Dave McGinnis created a 6-1-4 “Jumbo” package with Pat Tillman as the “1” at middle linebacker. Having 5 linemen in front of him, Pat Tillman could play clean and super-fast to the football. It was absolutely awesome to watch.

Pat Tillman’s Career Stats

With the Arizona St. Sun Devils:

  • Games: 33
  • Tackles: 230
  • Tackles for Loss: 24

All of this and I have yet to mention what Pat Tillman’s greatest virtues were.

  1. Loyalty —- Pat was always the ultimate family member, teammate and, even more so, the ultimate Amercian patriot.
  2. Humility —- Pat was uncomfortable responding to reporters who were gushing about the level of his play. He would often say that he played so-so but his teammates played great.

If you recall, after Pat and his brother made the decision to enlist in the armed forces, Pat did not want one iota of fanfare for his decision. As he said, he wanted to be treated like every other enlistee. He abhorred the notion of being treated as some kind of an American hero.

Pat would not have wanted the American hero treatment posthumously, either. He would have hated all of that. Even when the truth came out that he was tragically killed by “friendly fire” from his own men, Pat would not have wanted to be hailed as hero.

In my classes, I made it a yearly tradition at either Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day to tell my students the story of Pat Tillman. The reaction from my students was profound. While in the school’s photo lab, some made posters of Pat in his Cardinals’ uniform kneeling in front of the Twin Towers. One of those posters adorned the wall right next to my white board. Some bought Pat Tillman jerseys. Can you imagine what it was like for me to be walking around Patriots Place in Foxborough and see a present or former student proudly wearing a Pat Tillman jersey?

Some former students go out of their way on Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day to send me a tribute to Pat Tillman via Facebook. That’s the thing with young people —- when their minds and hearts are touched, they never forget.

On this day, I think of my dear dad who was a radio control operator on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during World War II. I get choked up thinking about it. Dad didn’t talk very much about his time in the U.S. Navy.

But the one story he told me and my sisters that we will never forget is how one night while the aircraft carrier was meandering through the heavily mined waters of the Yellow Sea, all of the crewman elected to sleep on the deck that night in case of a mine hit taking out a chuck of the ship and thereby having to potentially evacuate the vessel as soon as possible with whatever life boats that were available. Swimming to safety was not an option because the warm waters were thick with sharks.

Dad said he decided to go sleep in his bunk anyway. When we asked him why, he said he figured a good night’s sleep would best prepare him for whatever would happen. We thought Dad was out of his mind. But come to think of it, that might be something Pat Tillman would have done.

Like some of you, I was one of the fortunate ones whose dads came home from war. I would have never existed, otherwise. Which makes me feel all the more heartbroken for Pat Tillman, his wife Marie and his loving family.

Pat Tillman’s death remains an unfathomable loss for all those who loved and respected him. His death on the battlefield was an Amercian patriot’s ultimate sacrifice.

A sacrifice from a former NFL star who after 9/11 told the world how his great-grandfather had fought at Pearl Harbor to protect the Amercian freedoms that he and everyone have today and that by comparison, “I haven’t done anything.”

Said by the soldier who wound up giving everything.
