ROTB Poll: Which Top 30 visitor in this poll do you think is the Cardinals’ highest ranked player?

Is it an offensive tackle, a scheme diverse linebacker, a defensive end or a cornerback?

I think I know which of these 4 players is #1 on the Cardinals’ wish list. I am going to write an article about why I believe one of these payers stands above the others. But I would first like to know what my fellow ROTB members think.

Patrick Peterson to announce day two selections for Arizona Cardinals at 2025 NFL Draft

TGL presented by SoFi: NY v ATL

Photo by Cliff Hawkins/TGL/TGL Golf via Getty Images

The recently retired Arizona Cardinal will announce the teams day two selections.

The NFL is having former players announce day two selections at the 2025 NFL Draft, so of course the Arizona Cardinals will have their newly retired and reconciled cornerback Patrick Peterson involved.

From the team:

Recently retired Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson will join other NFL Legends and active players at the NFL Draft in Green Bay on Friday, April 25 to announce second and third round picks on the second day of the 2025 NFL Draft.

He will announce the Cardinals second-round (47th overall) and third-round selections (78th overall) in Green Bay.

Peterson spent 10 seasons (2011-20) with the Cardinals after joining the team as a first-round selection (5th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft out of LSU. An eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro selection – all with Arizona - Peterson was named to the 2010-19 All-Decade Team by the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selection committee.

The return of Peterson to the Arizona Cardinals organization is complete.

2025 NFL Draft Wild Card for Cardinals: Donovan Jackson

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 10 CFP Semifinal Cotton Bowl Classic - Texas v Ohio State

Photo by Matthew Visinsky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

How can the Cardinals assure that they will be able to draft their next highly coveted Buckeye?

Arizona Cardinas’ GM Monti Ossenfort said this week that the team’s board is 95% finished and that in the days leading up to the draft he and the draft team will be conducting a number of mocks.

If my hunch that Justin Frye has been pounding the table for his highly versatile guard/tackle All-Star, Donovan Jackson, then much of the focus on Monti’s mocks is going to be how they can maneuver the pick.

I believe that Brock Huard is right on the money in his evaluation of Jackson. It’s a great video. Please have a look:

Here the thing —- while Donovan Jackson is not likely a top 16 pick —- the odds of him be available at pick #47 are pretty low, in my opinion.

Therefore, if Monti wants very much to accommodate his new offensive line coach, then he likely has two choices:

  1. Trade down from #16 and wherever the first pick is —- take Donovan Jackson right then and there and you have him potentially at LG beside PJJ for 5 years.

2. Trade up from #47 to maneuver the pick.

Donovan Jackson is the main reason, in my opinion, for Monti wanting to trade down from #16, because he can then package #47 pick and whatever Day 2 pick he acquires in the trade down from #16, to then move up in round 2 to where the Donovan Jackson pick can be made.

I acquired the Bengals’ 1st and 3rd round picks for pick #16 and then packaged their 3rd round pick #81 with our 2nd round pick at #47 to acquire the Saints’ pick at #40.

Kenneth Grant and Jalon Walker were off the board. Thus, my hunch is that Monti would take LB Jihaad Campbell at pick #17 in a close call over DT Walter Nolen.

Note: Donovan Jackson is ranked #39 on PFN’s board. He’s #48 on PFF’s.

2025 NLF Mock Draft: Options for the Arizona Cardinals with the 16th pick

Syndication: Arizona Republic

Cheryl Evans/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Working through some options for the Arizona Cardinals at the 16th pick.

Happy Friday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals and the rest of the NFL will have finished the 2025 NFL Draft’s first round and we will all be happy... right... right?

To get us prepared let’s do a little experiment today.

Walter mentioned how ESPN had league scouts from around the league pick the first 10 picks.

That leaves five picks before the Arizona Cardinals pick, so we will use a combination of research and the consensus picks to get us to the Cardinals pick.

I will link to the E$PN+ article but also provide the first ten picks with none of the reasoning.

  1. Cam Ward - Titans
  2. Travis Hunter - Browns
  3. Abdul Carter - Giants
  4. Will Campbell - Patriots
  5. Mason Graham - Jaguars
  6. Ahston Jeanty - Raiders
  7. Armand Membou - Jets
  8. Jalon Walker - Panthers
  9. Shemar Stewart - Saints
  10. Will Johnson - Bears

That takes us to the 49ers and of course they take a punter.

11. Mykel Williams - 49ers
12. Tetairoa McMillan - Cowboys
13. Jahdae Barron - Dolphins
14. Jihad Campbell - Colts
15. Mike Green - Falcons

That brings us to the Arizona Cardinals.

In this scenario there are a couple of options.

First you can grab Kelvin Banks, Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, Josh Simmons.

Shedeur Sanders is still on the board, so there is a chance, slim, that maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers would move up. Would you be willing to move out of the first round altogether, get a future first or second and then a bounty this year if the Giants came calling?

I think in this scenario the Cardinals stick and pick, and Banks would make sense. Ironically OL guru Duke Manyweather, who has been working out with one Paris Johnson Jr., had this to say:

IMO, I think he’d be an excellent OG. Out of the top OT’s in this draft, Banks is the lesser athlete, you see it on tape & reflects in testing if you compare to other top OT’s (tested more like an OG). Get’s out of position a lot, his feet aren’t always efficient and it hurts his… https://t.co/5nvj4gPuJo

— Duke Manyweather (@BigDuke50) April 18, 2025

Of course, not sure fans would be super excited about grabbing a guard at 16.

In this scenario I think the Cardinals would take Derrick Harmon. He checks a lot of the boxes and is a dominant interior pass rusher.

I think their first inclination would be to trade down, but again, you have to have someone willing to move down and more importantly, there has to be a player teams would move up for.

I don’t know in this draft who that is, unless teams want to get in front of the Bengals for a pass rusher, or get in front of the Broncos for Omarion Hampton.

If I had my druthers, I would take Josh Simmons. I know I cannot know how the knee is, but he was the best offensive linemen in college football before the injury, has extensive work at both tackle positions, and did what you want... moved from San Diego State to Ohio State and became a dominant player.

He is the best player they can take here, but again, I have no way of knowing how the knee is, and it is easy from my comfy chair to make that call.

Would love to know what you would do in this circumstance.

Rumor: Cardinals may try to acquire a second 1st round pick

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

But what kind of trade package would it take?

ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss tweeted out this fyi item yesterday:

A source told me today that it wouldn't be a surprise if the Cardinals trade back into the later portion of the first round to target a developmental position.

— Josh Weinfuss (@joshweinfuss) April 18, 2025

When I first read this, I misunderstood what Mr. Weinfuss was trying to say. I thought he meant trading down from #16. Others were slightly confused as well.

“Trade back into” as in they trade back from 16 or up from 2nd?

— Jiminy (@JacobSport8996) April 18, 2025

Up from

— Josh Weinfuss (@joshweinfuss) April 18, 2025

This rumor, to some extent, fits in with the discussions we have been having about Monti trying to maneuver his second pick in the draft for one of the Ohio St. offensive linemen, either T Josh Simmons or G Donovan Jackson.

Yet, if Monti stays at pick #16, then what kind of package would it take for him to convince a team to trade out of round 1, with the earliest pick being #47? Most likely, the package would have to include #78 and more than likely a Day 2 pick in 2026? Or could there be a player involved?

Which begs the question, which teams might be interested in trading out of the 1st round in favor of adding at least 2 Day 2 picks, plus a player and/or a future pick?

Three teams that only have 1 Day 2 pick come to mind:

  • #24 —- Vikings —- #97
  • #26 —- Rams —- #90
  • #29 —- Commanders —- #61.

Here is the 2025 NFL Draft Trade Value Chart:

2025 NFL Trade Value Chart (drafttek.com)

  • Cardinals’ pick #47 = 430 points
  • Cardinals’ pick #78 = 200 points
  • Cardinals picks #47 + #78 = 630 points
  • Vikings” #24 pick = 740 points - 630 points = 110 points
  • Rams’ #26 pick = 700 points - 630 points = 70 points
  • Commanders’ #29 pick = 640 points - 630 = 10 points (closest)

Arizona Cardinals fans are betting a defensive lineman is the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft for the team

NFL: Scouting Combine

Fans think the Arizona Cardinals will invest in the defensive line.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Sunday one and all.

We are finally into the 2025 NFL Draft week and the Arizona Cardinals are going to be on the clock on Thursday evening.

Now the question is, who are we betting is the pick?

According to our friends at FanDuel Sportsbook, we have the odds heading into Thursday (the odds were as of 4/15/25 and updated odds can be found at FanDuel Sportsbook, but for the survey these were the odds we had).

  • Defensive Line/Edge (+230) —> (+135)
  • Offensive line (+250) —> (+250)
  • Cornerback (+380) —> (+380)
  • Linebacker (+480) —> (+500)
  • Wide Receiver (+950) —> (+950)
  • Safety (+2200) —> (+2200)

Fans voted overwhelmingly that the team will invest in the defensive front and or offensive line.

I hope you got that bet in for the defensive line/edge position early, because odds have crashed.

So, are you going to put your money where your hope is?

Red Flags to consider for each of the 2025 NFL Draft prospects for the Arizona Cardinals

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 01 CFP Quarterfinal Rose Bowl Game - Ohio State vs Oregon

Photo by Jeff Speer/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Which red flag is the biggest for your in the 2025 NFL Draft first round prospect pool.

Happy Monday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals head into the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday and in doing so they need to get someone who can be a contributor in year one, but more importantly someone who can be a huge impact over the course of his career.

So, we have a number of options that we have talked about, but what are their red flags?

Every players has one, some have more, so for the Cardinals potential picks, where are their red flags. Again, using the consensus board from 10-32:

10. Jalon Walker, Edge, Georgia - Smaller side for a full-time edge rusher, not a full-time off ball linebacker in college and instincts are not completely up to speed.

12. Will Johnson, CB, Michigan - Injuries have prevented him from finishing his final season and testing, looks like a great zone cornerback, but looks to lack athleticism to work consistently in man and lacks recovery speed.

13. Kelvin Banks, OL, Texas - Some are grading him as a guard only, including NFL teams. Pass pro seems to be an issue.

14. Mykel Williams, Edge, Georgia - Lacks elite athleticism, lack of production and pass rushing prowess a concern.

15. Jahdae Barron, CB, Texas - Lacks size, length of desired outside cornerback, had ankle and knee issues while at Texas. Seen more in the Tyrann Mathieu/Budda Baker role than a traditional cornerback.

16. Shemar Stewart, Edge, Texas A&M - No production, lacks a pass rush plan or move set (at least did not show it at A&M).

18. Mike Green, Edge, Marshall - Don’t see him even being on the Cardinals board with the character concerns.

19. Jihaad Campbell, LB, Alabama - Lacks instincts and ability to take on blocks in the run game. Shoulder surgery waiting for clearance, allegedly may have to start camp on PUP.

23. Derrick Harmon, DL, Oregon - Injury concerns came up... today. Wasn’t great against the run and has a concerning missed tackle rate. Has dealt with weight issues.

24. Josh Simmons, OL, Ohio State - Struggled with penalties first year at Ohio State, then is coming off a patella injury after second season (where he was playing at a near elite level).

26. Kenneth Grant, DL, Michigan - Despite his size, had poor metrics against the run. Has not shown a consistent pass rush ability, does he have the conditioning needed?

27. Grey Zabel, OL, NDSU - Penalty machine, has only one game against FBS team, short arms, guard/center only?

29. Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss - Questions on character/entitlement issues (although nothing can be verified), one year production, why did he have to leave Texas A&M to achieve anything (Although A&M players have... production issues).

30. Tyler Booker, OL, Alabama - Athletic profile barely meets the minimum. Guard only, can he play in the Cardinals pull heavy scheme?

31. James Pearce Jr., Edge, Tennessee - Like Nolen, character concerns, but nothing that has been verified. Allegedly the Tennessee program was happy to have him out.

32. Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, Boston College - Average size for the position, plays with more finesse than power and can be overwhelmed by opponents. Production has waned in his career.

2025 NFL Draft rumors: Trade winds starting to swirl as we near 2025 NFL Draft

New England Patriots v Arizona Cardinals

Listening to the rumors starting to flow about the 2025 NFL Draft.

Happy Tuesday one and all.

With the NFL draft just over 48 hours away, listen to everything and believe nothing you hear.

However, I did want to go over something interesting coming out just before the draft, and that is that the trade market, that has been insanely quiet for this time of year, could be heating up on draft night.

Trading texts this morning...I think we're going to see the trade talks heat up soon! One person I talked to thinks there will be a lot of action in Round 1

— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) April 22, 2025

Why you ask? Well as we discussed a bit yesterday, everyone is looking to move down, and when everyone is looking to move down, it means savvy teams will be moving up at a discount.

Been saying it all cycle: in a draft where a lot of teams want to trade down, the price to trade up will be cheaper and accordingly I think we will see a decent number of draft day trades. Not expecting a record or anything, but still some! https://t.co/rFoZqsdJkP

— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) April 22, 2025

What does that mean? Well first it likely means that the typical compensation is out the window, so all the lovely trade charts we have are useless.

Second, with the way this draft is unfolding, teams like the Texans, Chiefs and Eagles will likely be looking to move up if there is a specific prospect they want to acquire.

There seems to be less desperation to move up, and instead a more steady desire to move down as the meat of this draft stands between 15 and 90, that is the consensus among people I have spoken with.

So, if the Cardinals are moving down, it won’t be for a king’s ransom.

Hell, Kyle Posey talked about it with the 49ers today:

This lists the Broncos as a trade up candidate to 11 with the 49ers if Jeanty makes it there. Denver picks 20th.

Maybe not apples to apples because it was for a QB, but the Bears gave the Giants a 5th, & future 1st/4th moving from 20th to 11th for Justin Fields in ‘21. https://t.co/E0FcSGCpne pic.twitter.com/GF84XA4tBz

— Kyle Posey (@KP_Show) April 22, 2025

This draft will be fun because it is unique, but also because there are going to be smart teams that make moves, let’s hope the Arizona Cardinals are one of them.

Injury concerns coming up for two potential prospects for the Arizona Cardinals

NCAA Football: Southern California at Michigan

Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

Could two players who have been mocked heavily to the Arizona Cardinals be injury concerns?

We are into crunch time as we head into the 2025 NFL Draft and some new news is coming into focus.

We discussed the red flags for players the other day, we discussed the rumors swirling about the trades.

Now, there is some interesting injury information that has come out, including two players who could be of interest to the Arizona Cardinals... Or maybe would not be of interest anymore.

It started with Will Johnson, who has had a bad lead up to the 2025 NFL Draft, and now there is concern he could be about his long-term status with a knee.

.@AlbertBreer on Will Johnson’s draft stock:

“Will Johnson has a knee issue that’s been flagged. It shouldn’t affect him in the short term, but teams are concerned it could impact his longevity. Add the questions on Johnson’s long speed, and the Wolverine star could slide.” pic.twitter.com/BJ0EXLSHfV

— King of Phinland (@KingOfPhinland) April 22, 2025

So, does that mean he would be off the board for the Arizona Cardinals? Would that injury flag be too big of one to ignore?

Then, there was the story on Derrick Harmon having a medical red flag out of left field and it appears it could be a shoulder issue.

Harmon may be dealing with a L shoulder issue, not sure about Collins, had a calf strain.

I’d be out on Johnson too, cartilage issues in his R knee.

Simmons is dealing with a patellar tendon tear.

Campbell is dealing with a shoulder labrum repair.

Revel is coming off an ACL. https://t.co/0IPk9U7aOh

— Banged Up Bills (@BangedUpBills) April 21, 2025

So... How does that affect what the Arizona Cardinals think?

Interesting information coming out as we lead up to the 2025 NFL Draft.

Arizona Cardinals linked to Tyler Booker, Shemar Stewart and who else for 2025 NFL Draft?

NCAA Football: Texas A&M at Mississippi State

Matt Bush-Imagn Images

The Cardinals are being linked by one NFL Draft expert to a trio of prospects.

Happy Wednesday one and all.

The pre-draft hoopla, smoke screens, and subterfuge is all over, so let’s throw some more gasoline on that fire.

Our good buddy Andy Kwong asked Lance Zierlein during an “X” Q&A session some names to know for the Arizona Cardinals.

Fasten your seatbelts.

Thank you to Lance Zierlein for answering my question!

Here are the top 3 prospects he thinks AZ could select if they stick and pick at 16 (based off who's believed to be available there):

Alabama G Tyler Booker
Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan
Texas A&M ED Shemar Stewart https://t.co/Ji2ipf4gbI

— Andy Kwong (@akwong31) April 23, 2025

Just based on the discussions on this site, I don’t think people would be overly excited about that.

We have talked about two of them. Tyler Booker is a very good guard, but lacks what we have seen from an athleticism standpoint of previous guards in the Drew Petzing offense. Are they potentially going away from power and wide zone to a more gap based offense? On the flipside, he may be the best pass pro guard in the draft based off the metric scores, but his lack of athleticism is concerning.

Then, Shemar Stewart has been discussed quite a bit on the site and we know the pros and cons.

Walter had a great look at the prospect and why he could make sense.

Finally, Tetairoa McMillan is an interesting prospect, in that he is a big, long, athletic receiving threat in the Tee Higgins mold.

However, would that mean Michael Wilson is on the outs? Would they trust Wilson to be a slot weapon, or would just getting an alpha in a draft that may lack those types be the right move?

Always fun this time of year.

Cardinals First Round Reacts Survey: Grade the Arizona Cardinals first round of the 2025 NFL Draft

Give us a grade of the Arizona Cardinals pick of Walter Nolen.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Arizona Cardinals did not hide their intentions, they had the defensive front as a priority and Walter Nolen was one of the top pieces on their board.

They wanted Nolen, and people I trust told me they didn’t think he was getting past the Niners, so I am sure they were excited to see this result during draft night.

We will get into all of that and more over the next couple of days, but tonight, how would you grade the Arizona Cardinals draft pick of Walter Nolen?

I will happily provide my grade a little later, don’t want to influence anyone, but let’s just say it seemed... Awesome.

Arizona Cardinals Draft Grades: Praise for the pick of Walter Nolen

Ole Miss v Arkansas

Let’s take a look around the web at some of the initial grades on the Arizona Cardinals first round pick.

Happy Friday one and all.

We are heading into day two of the 2025 NFL Draft, and one thing we like to do is see how the movement of the ultra reactionary grading changes from Friday after round one, to Monday after all the dust has settled.

So, how did the Arizona Cardinals do in their instant reaction grades? Let’s take a look.

NFL.com Chad Reuter - Arizona Cardinals - A

The Cardinals continue to rebuild their defensive line, taking Nolen after signing Calais Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency. Campbell is 38 years old, though, so pairing Nolen with last year’s first-round pick, Darius Robinson, portends a strong future up front. Nolen, who can play as a 1-, 3- or 5-technique, has the get-off, powerful hands and quickness to become a star.

Pete Prisco CBS Sports

16. Cardinals: Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss

Grade: B

He is a good inside player who will team with Calais Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson to give them upgrades inside on a line that needed it. Nolen has big-time ability, but he needs to be more consistent and dedicated to the craft.

USA Today

16. Arizona Cardinals: Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss – Grade: B+

Monti Ossenfort is going all in on his defensive front in 2025. After adding edge rusher Josh Sweat and defensive linemen Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell in free agency, Arizona kept pushing by bringing on Nolen. A massively disruptive but still inconsistent interior penetrator, Nolen can ease into work and learn behind a fine mentor in Campbell, the 38-year-old who can help him unlock his full potential.

Yahoo! Sports Charles McDonald

16. Arizona Cardinals: DT Walter Nolen (Ole Miss)

Grade: B+

The Cardinals got a lot more disruptive with this pick. Walter Nolen has all the upside in the world to be an impact 3-technique at the next level and has a higher floor than Robert Nkemdiche, the last Ole Miss defensive tackle they selected in the first round. Nolen’s play is a bit streaky, but the big-play potential with Nolen is here in droves.

PFF

16) Arizona Cardinals: DI Walter Nolen, Mississippi

Pick Grade:
Elite

The Cardinals add another extremely talented player to amplify their defensive front. As a plus run defender, Nolen earned the second-highest PFF run-defense grade in the FBS this past season (91.6). The seventh-ranked prospect on the PFF Big Board will instantly upgrade an Arizona defense that ranked 27th in EPA allowed per rush in 2024.

Sports Illustrated

16. Arizona Cardinals

Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss

Nolen showed flashes of being a game-wrecker in his lone season at Ole Miss. He’ll now join a revamped defensive line in Arizona that just added edge rusher Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson.

After two sluggish years at Texas A&M, it clicked for Nolen with his new team, becoming a consensus All-American and first-team All-SEC. Nolen had a team-high 14 tackles for loss and added 6.5 sacks. Developing consistency is key for Nolen, but there’s no denying his high upside after what he flashed at Ole Miss. —GM

Grade: B

Bleacher Report

Grade: A

Few prospects in this year’s class have as much natural upside and game-changing ability as Nolen, who has similar qualities to former Eagle defensive tackle Milton Williams. He should fit right in along the Cardinals’ defensive line.

I don’t know how to grade “Elite” I am guessing that is a strong “A”, but it feels like a consensus B+ so far, which is about all you want.

Good player, lot of upside, can he reach that potential and continue to grow into the game-wrecker everyone sees?

Especially good pick when you know he doesn’t have to be a massive piece in year one (barring injuries) and can learn from two of the better pros in the league in Campbell and Tomlinson.

Cardinals Go Good Will Duck Hunting on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft In a Burch-bark dinghy with a 28 horsepower Johnson outboard motor on the Azraq wetlands of Jordan.

Imagine if anyone had mocked this for the Cardinals:

  • R1 (#16) —- Walter Nolen III, DT, Mississippi
  • R2 (#47) —- Will Johnson, CB, Michigan
  • R3 (#78) —- Jordan Burch, ED, Oregon

No NFL mock draft simulator would have ever allowed it.

I mean, how in the world could these three stellar picks have happened?

The answer is —-> by a string of miracles.

Miracles are not necessarily surprising things that wouldn’t happen —- they are miracles because of the extraordinary timing of the events.

For example —- the Red Sea does part —- thus, the miracle at the Red Sea was that the body of water just so happened to part at the precise time when the Israelites needed to escape the Pharoah’s army.

Let’s therefore list the number of miracles on Day 1 and 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft that safely brought Walter Nolen III, Will Johnson and Jordan Burch into the loving arms of the Red Sea!

  1. The 49ers at pick #11, who need interior defensive line help after a miserable season defending the run and subsequently releasing Javon Hargrave, choose edge rusher Mykel Williams over Walter Nolen III.
  2. The Falcons at pick #15, one pick ahead of the Cardinals, choose hybrid ILB/edge rusher Jalon Walker over Walter Nolen III.
  3. At pick #16, Monti Ossenfort, spurred by Jonathan Gannon’s urging, selects Walter Nolen III over the Cardinals’ fans’ favorite Will Johnson, with Michael Bidwill’s blessing!
  4. 46 picks go by, and no team has turned in a card for Will Johnson, including Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers.
  5. With the 46th pick, the LA Rams, who have been needing to supplement their prolific front 7 picks with equally good CBs, choose to select TE Terrance Ferguson instead of Will Johnson. As Lieutenant Joe Kenda, of “Homicide Hunter” would say, “Oh, my!”
  6. When the Cardinals are on the clock at pick #47, the phone is ringing off the hook and Monti is not tempted to accept a trade offer to add more picks —- he sticks and goes “Good Will Hunting” by selecting Will Johnson.
  7. At pick #77, one pick ahead of the Cardinals’ #78 pick in the 3rd round, the Panthers, very likely knowing how much work the Cardinals had put in to scouting Princely Umanmielen, make a trade with the Patriots to snag Walter Nolen’s pass rushing teammate.
  8. Seemingly unphased, Monti Ossenfort hauls in a big, quick Oregon Duck pass rusher with a 22.5% win rate when rushing from 7 and 9 techniques in 6-4, 28- pound Jordan Burch, who posted 8.5 sacks in 10 games while helping Oregon win the Big Ten Championship.

Cardinals Day 2 Draft Pick Profiles:

Very good understanding of leverages

Smooth when passing off receivers and picking them up in zone

Can play confidently in the slot if needed

Fluid transitions from backpedal to shuffle to full stride

Understands contain in run fits

Will Johnson at pick #47 feels surreal. JG/Nick Rallis love zone coverage and when you look up zone cover CB in the dictionary, y'see WJ's photo. In man he's good against WRs with length as MHJ can attest. Amazing that the Rams passed on him at #46. Make 'em all pay, WJ!

— Walter B J Mitchell (@WBJMItch) April 26, 2025

Notice the Darius Slay player comp for Will Johnson. Slay made his 4th and 5th Pro Bowls in the two years that JG was his DC.

Cardinals select PFF’s 13th ranked player at pick #47.

73. ED Jordan Burch, Oregon

Player comp: Matthew Judon

Strengths

Great measurables for the edge position

Scheme versatile defender who can play anything from a 3-technique to a 7-technique

Frame is well filled out for all that height and weight

Very nice first-step explosiveness for his size

Extremely low missed tackle percentage

Eyes and anticipation for the ball were much improved in 2024

Weaknesses

Needs more of a pass-rush plan before the ball is snapped

Hands lack purpose

Lacks the bend to truly threaten the outside shoulder with speed, even with a good first step

NCAA Football: Idaho at Oregon
Craig Strobeck-Imagn Images

Jordan Burch is a tremendous athlete at 6-5, 280 who runs a 4.67 40. In one sense, he's a more productive (Burch had 8.5 sacks, 11 TFL, 31 tackles, 6 pass deflections in 2024) version of Shemar Stewart, but the player comp I like for him is of Patriots' DE Keion White who had 47…

— Walter B J Mitchell (@WBJMItch) April 26, 2025

tackles, 45 QB pressures and 6 sacks in his 2nd season this year. Burch’s pass rush win rate in 2024 was 15.1%. He rarely misses a tackle, but needs to stack, shed and find the ball more quickly. Legit R2 player taken in R3 at pick #78.

The Matthew Judon player comp for Jordan Burch is exciting because Burch very much fits the Ravens’ edge rusher prototype.

Cardinals’ select PFF’s 73rd ranked player at pick #78.

Commentary:

It was surreal moment last night to see Patrick Peterson announce the Will Johnson pick —- which is kind of a miracle of its own. I mean, who would have ever thought a year ago that Patrick Peterson would be so much back in the good graces of the Cardinals to where they wanted him to announce their Day 2 picks? And it just so happens that Pat P’s first call is Will Johnson at pick #47?

You have to know there’s suddenly such a positive buzz around the Cardinals when Calais Campbell is excited to return and former Pro Bowlers like Darnell Dockett and Patrick Peterson are taking such a renewed interest in the team.

Kudos to Monti Ossenfort and Jonathan Gannon for bringing the buzz back to the Cardinals. They have done so by fostering meaningful connections and relationships with the players and the prospects they bring in for Top 30 visits. All three of the new Cardinals have had nothing but positive and praiseworthy things to say about the pre-draft interest they received from Monti and JG.

JG describes the Cardinals’ players as a “close-knit group.”

Did you see Kyler welcome the Nolen family at the team facility yesterday?

Kyler in command. Love the Cardinals' cutoff hoodie! We all should style in one of those. https://t.co/QC7wSZxMSC

— Walter B J Mitchell (@WBJMItch) April 25, 2025

And later on, that evening, Walter Nolen, when he was informed that Will Johnson was upset about his slide in the draft, Walter asked JG for Will’s number.

When all was said and done, Will Johnson, at the conclusion of his post-draft interview, avowed: “it is a blessing that I landed with the Cardinals.”

It does feel like a blessing...

And a miracle.

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

Tracking all the undrafted free agents the Arizona Cardinals add after the 2025 NFL Draft ends.

Happy end of the 2025 NFL Draft one and all.

We are now into the 2025 NFL undrafted free agent period and the Arizona Cardinals do not have a lot of room on the roster.

So, we won’t expect too many, however, we do expect players that make rosters.

In fact, the undrafted free agents the Arizona Cardinals have added in previous seasons have ended up being players that have made a positive impact in the league.

Look at the history:

2024: Xavier Weaver
2023: Emari Demercado and Quavuan White
2022: Ronnie Rivers
2020: Jonathan Ward and Jace Whittaker
2018: Trent Sherfield and Jonathan Owens
2017: Ricky Seals-Jones

So, could the Arizona Cardinals find a player who can make an impact in 2025 and beyond?

We will update the names as things play out, but know that the shopping will be low again, just like last year where they only brought in three.

Cards add 2 more Buckeyes, a Longhorn and a former Longhorn turned Wolf

On day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft from Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Arizona Cardinals continued on their mission to turn their underwhelming defense into a potential juggernaut. Here is how I described each of the team’s four picks on X yesterday:

Round 4: Cody Simon, ILB, Ohio St.

Cody Simon showed up with a bang at the perfect time for the Buckeyes in 2024 - with the level of his play (87.7) and alpha-type leadership. While he lacks the kind of length and size that NFL DCs covet at ILB, he proved that when you keep him clean, he’s a productive tackler (90.6 RDEF), cover LB (72.7) and blitzer (80.6).

Round 5: Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio St.

A year ago, Will Johnson and Denzel Burke were ranked the #1 and #5 CBs in the 2025 draft class. Both of them excel in off ball zone coverage. In 2024, Burke was once again excellent in zone coverage (81.0) where he made many of his nation’s leading 21 coverage stops. Man coverage not being nearly as strong (58.5) led to 72.3% comp rate and passer RTG of 95.4.

Round 6: Hayden Conner, G, Texas

Hayden Conner 6-6, 327, James Conner’s 3rd cousin twice removed (lol), is a running game mauler and pass pro brick wall who needs to hone his run and pass blocking techniques. Not sure how agile he can be on NFL level in the pulling aspects of DP’s wide zone blocking schemes. But he sure can pin and down block with the best of them. If Justin Frye develops him, what a brute force he could be for Cardinals offensive line. He’s a workout warrior in a JJ Watt inspired kind of way. Watch him stifle the vaunted Michigan defensive linemen here:

Round 7: Kitan Crawford, S, Nevada

I’ve been mocking S Kitan Crawford to the Cardinals in R7. Bill F. and I have been thinking that adding another S could mean that Monti may elect to trade Jalen Thompson. Crawford has legit 4.4 speed; he storms the alleys like a pro, and he’s instinctive in pass coverage. Should be roster-worthy right away as a special teams’ gunner. Could carve a niche as a nickel safety in a Cover 2 package adjacent to the Rabbit.

PFF Profiles:

Cody Simon, CB, Ohio St.

Simon is a traditional inside linebacker who would play best in a 3-4 with a fellow inside linebacker next to him. His length and overall athletic limitations likely make him a rotational and reserve linebacker who plays soundly to round out a depth chart.

Shades Of

Blake Martinez

Pros

  • Traditional between-the-tackle linebacker
  • Good feel for run defense
  • Sound between his gaps

Cons

  • Lower weight profile does show up when trying to disengage blocks
  • Could be more violent when taking on blocks (needs to as a smaller player)
  • Seems to have shorter arms than average

Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio St.

Review

Burke is a natural mover with good eyes and a feel for bump-and-run coverage in off-zone coverage alignments. His long speed/recovery speed are limiting factors to man/press coverage versatility, but his experience as a four-year starter should get him a roster spot as a depth cornerback.

Shades Of

Sean Murphy-Bunting

Pros

  • Natural, smooth mover
  • Good eyes in zone
  • Good feel for spacing to bait throws/warrant no throws
  • Willing to be in position in run defense (not as reliable to finish tackles)
  • High forced incompletion rate despite lack of INTs

Cons

  • Feet can be a tick slow to mirror out of press
  • Top speed is average at best. Can get grabby against faster WRs
  • Has a difficult time finishing tackles despite being in good position

Hayden Conner, G, Texas

Draft Projection

Round 6

Overview

Experienced guard with the measurables to get a longer look from NFL teams. Conner has a broad, well-built frame and his natural power is evident when he lands with some momentum. He played well against Michigan’s Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, but a lack of athleticism makes him scheme-dependent. His size impedes static pass rushers looking to push the pocket, but he’s ill-equipped to match the movements of an active rusher. Conner is above average as a run blocker, but he might be too overmatched athletically to make it long-term.

Strengths

  • Excellent size and heavy on contact in run game.
  • Connects and drives opponents when centered.
  • Good feel for angles and positioning to execute blocks.
  • Thuds heads-up rush with firm punch and core power.
  • Able to shove twisters and edge runners off course.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks athleticism to consistently execute stretch blocks.
  • Below-average pad level when staying connected with two-gappers.
  • At a loss when adjusting to moving targets.
  • Drops feet behind him when punching.
  • Overextends when mirroring, opening him to counters.
  • Heavy slides are slow to cut off gaps to speed.

Kitan Crawford, S, Nevada

Crawford is an athletic prospect who finally got a chance to start at Nevada after spending four years as a role player at Texas. He earned an outstanding 88.5 coverage grade in his lone season as a starter. His athleticism is his primary appeal and could get him drafted. He needs to become more refined and a. better tackler to earn something more than a special teams’ role.

Draft Projection

Rounds 4-5

Kitan Crawford Draft and Combine Prospect Profile | NFL.com

Overview

Fifth-year senior who made his way to Nevada for his final season after four years at Texas. Crawford lacks height and arm length, but he’s compact and very explosive. His testing at the combine showed off his long speed. He needs to play with better timing to make it work for him more consistently, though. Crawford is inconsistent as a run defender but is more than willing to hit. He needs to find a position fit as either a big nickelback or backup safety to pair with a starring role on special teams.

Strengths

  • Plays with athletic feet and smooth hips underneath.
  • Hammers through pass-catchers’ arms to eliminate catches.
  • Runs the alley and accelerates through his target.
  • Plenty of special-teams experience.
  • Impressed with speed and explosiveness at the NFL Scouting Combine.
  • Will stand out on kick-cover teams.

Weaknesses

  • Average burst out of his stance and to the throw.
  • Fails to shrink angles for running back in run support.
  • Needs to prioritize wrap-ups over collisions as a tackler.
  • Started in just 4 of 46 games during four seasons at Texas.

Cardinals’ 2025 Draft Assessment:

What this draft proved, imo, is that Monti Ossenfort is at his best when he sticks and picks. Look at the way the draft unfolded for him like a charm. Who would have ever believed the Cardinals could come away from this draft with both Walter Nolen and Will Johnson? And for that matter, being able to add Jordan Burch and Cody Simon.

The one predictable critique I have is of the 5th round trade because it appeared to cost Monti and the Cardinals a chance to pick Marcus Mbow of Purdue, Miles Frazier of LSU or Jackson Slater of Sacramento St.

Mbow was Mel Kiper’s #5 G prospect and one of his draft sleepers. Frazier was his #9 G and Slater his #4 C. Mel had Hayden Conner ranked #18 G.

Yet choosing Hayden Conner is very likely a matter of style in that he is more of a mauler and little less athletic than Mbow, Frazier and Slater. All should depend on how well Justin Frye can adapt Conner’s game to the NFL.

While I think highly of Denzel Burke as a zone CB, it continues to feel unfathomable that of Monti Ossenfort’s 31 picks in 3 years, 7 of his picks are CBs (23% of the entire picks) —- for a head coach who cut his teeth in the NFL coaching CBs. It makes no sense whatsoever, especially for a GM who vowed to sync up the scouting and the coaching.

53-Man Roster Questions:

  1. With Walter Nolen bringing his pass rushing and run stopping ability to the defensive interior, could this mean that Monti may try to trade or release Bilal Nichols, L.J. Collier or Justin Jones?
  2. With the acquisition of Will Johnson, what about Sean Murphy-Bunting? And which of the young CBs (Kei’Trel Clark, Max Melton, Elijah Jones, Starling Thomas V, Denzel Burke) do not make the roster?
  3. With Cody Simon on board and after signing UFAs Mack Wilson Jr. in 2023 and Akeem Davis-Gaither and Mykal Walker in 2024, does this squeeze Owen Pappoe, by far the team’s best cover ILB off of the roster?
  4. With Hayden Conner’s ability to play guard and center, what does this mean for Jon Gaines II?
  5. With Kitan Crawford added at safety, will Monti try to trade or release Jalen Thompson?

Your answers to questions 1 - 5?

I am of the mindset to move on from a number of veterans in favor of keeping the team’s young talent. But I am worried that JG seems to pander to veterans. Do you agree?

Arizona Cardinals select Nevada safety Kitan Crawford with seventh round pick

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 14 Nevada at Minnesota

Photo by Bailey Hillesheim/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Arizona Cardinals 2025 NFL Draft class is finished, barring a trade back into the seventh round.

The Arizona Cardinals concluded their draft with Kitan Crawford, a safety out of Nevada.

From Dane Brugler’s “The Beast”:

A one-year starter at Nevada, Crawford played free safety while rotating in the box and as a nickel in head coach Jeff Choate’s multiple coverage looks. Highly recruited out of East Texas, he made an impact on special teams for the Longhorns but struggled to break through on defense. He transferred to Nevada in 2024 for the opportunity to be an every-down safety.

Crawford is a fluid, loose athlete who can unlock and play fast to the football, although he can be moved off his post and often reacts to the first look from the quarterback. There aren’t any questions about his willingness as a run defender, but his reliability finishing tackles must improve. Overall, Crawford has NFL-level speed and athleticism, but his inconsistent reads reflect his meager starting experience in the secondary. His special teams background and testing numbers will make him an appealing prospect in the later rounds.

Welcome to the desert, Kitan.

Arizona Cardinals sign six undrafted free agents

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 05 Tennessee at Arkansas

The Arizona Cardinals have added six undrafted free agents after the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Arizona Cardinals have officially signed six undrafted free agents from the 2025 NFL Draft class.

As is tradition, I will highlight each one individually over the next couple of days to make sure each one of the picks gets a chance to shine.

But, here are the six from the class of 2025.

  • Florida State offensive lineman Jeremiah Byers
  • Texas San-Antonio tight end Oscar Cardenas
  • Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Fryar
  • Wisconsin wide receiver Bryson Green
  • Connecticut offensive lineman Valentin Senn
  • Tennessee defensive lineman Elijah Simmons

Three lineman, a receiver, a tight end and one big defensive lineman. I mean Simmons is 6-1 334lbs, that is a mammoth of a man.

It jives with the offseason, they are looking to bolster the lines, and improve the depth at those positions to make sure there is no fall off with injuries, as there has been the last several seasons.

Good luck to all six and we are excited to get to know you over the next couple of days.

Nick Saban’s three questions for cornerbacks

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

How do the questions apply to the Cardinals’ current CBs?

If you were watching ESPN’s 2025 NFL Draft coverage, you may have seen the segment where Nick Saban described the three-part criteria he’s always had in evaluating CBs:

“All I want to know about CBs are three things:

  • (1) Can you cover man-to-man?
  • (2) Can you and track the ball on deep passes?
  • (3) Can you tackle?”

With PFF’s 2024 CB rankings for NFL players who took over 300 snaps, here is how the Cardinals’ CBs fared:

NFL ranking —- Overall CB grade —— Coverage grade

  • 3 —- Garrett Williams —- 82.0 —- 83.7
  • 76 —- Starling Thomas V —- 60.9 —- 67.5
  • 92 —- Sean Murphy- Bunting —- 56.5 —- 53.1
  • 96 —- Max Melton —- 55.5 —- 57.3

Had he taken more than 300 snaps and maintained his level of play consistently:

  • 28 —- Kei’Trel Clark —- 71.7 —- 65.7

2024 Cardinals’ CB Tackling Grades:

  1. 69.3 —- Kei’Trel Clark
  2. 67.5 —- Starling Thomas V
  3. 58.9 —- Garrett Williams
  4. 44.9 —- Max Melton
  5. 29.3 —- Sean Murphy-Bunting

With PFF’s 2024 CB grades for FBS players who took over 300 snaps, here is how the Cardinals’ new CBs fared: (plus Elijah Jones’ 2023 grades, seeing as we haven’t seen him play a regular season game yet).

Overall CB grade —— Coverage grade —- Man Coverage grade —- Tackling grade

  • Elijah Jones (2023) —- 90.6 —- 91.6 —- 90.8 —- 69.6
  • Will Johnson (2024) —-76.5 —- 76.7 —- 50.6 —- 48.7
  • Denzel Burke (2024) —- 70.7 —- 70.1 —- 58.5 —- 72.9

ROTB Questions:

Which of the Cardinals’ CBs have the best chance to satisfy Nick Saban’s criteria?

Interestingly, last year when the Cardinals drafted Max Melton, Nick Saban raved about Max’s man coverage ability.

It appears that Jonthan Gannon and Nick Rallis are committed to playing well over 60% of the coverages in zone. Are you comfortable with that? Which current CBs do you feel best suit zone coverages?

Plus, do you want to see Garrett Williams play perimeter CB, or are you 100% content with him being a slot CB?

Why do you suppose that after the bye week in make-or-break games during key 3rd and 4th down conversions, the coaches did not have Garrett Williams cover either Justin Jefferson or Adam Thielen from the slot?

Could you envision a scenario where JG/NR platoon a set of zone CBs with a set of man CBs?

If you are picking 6 CBs to make the 53, who are your favorites?
