Capitals @ Jets Recap: Ovechkin Scores No. 889 but Jets Get the 3-2 OT Win

Did Alex Ovechkin score? He did indeed, boys and girls and babes! Goal 889 of his career and number 36 on the season came at 16:00 in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Plus: The Washington Capitals’ penalty kill looked excellent tonight. The Winnipeg Jets have the best power play in the league, operating at a whopping 30.1% success rate, but the Caps’ PK was up to the task and kept them…

Pros and Cons: The Jakob Chychrun Deal

The Capitals announced yesterday that they’d re-signed Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year, $72 million contract extension and taking care of their last big pending UFA ahead of the final push for the playoffs. It’s a huge deal, and one that certainly has its supporters and its detractors. So let’s break it down and look at this thing from both sides – is it a good deal or a bad one?

Nicklas Backstrom is Going Home

While Nicklas Backstrom will spend part of this spring traveling around with the Capitals to follow his old pal’s historic chase, his future beyond this season will likely not be in the United States. Backstrom’s father, Anders, recently spoke to local Brynas news outlet, Gefle Dagblad, about his son’s next steps – and while it sounds like Backstrom and his family will head back to Sweden…

Capitals vs. Wild Recap: Caps Falter in Twin Cities, 4-2

Did Alex Ovechkin score? Nope. Plus: Nice to see a couple of guys who do a lot of good things but maybe don’t score a whole lot get the team’s first two goals, with Matt Roy opening the scoring for the Caps (his first goal in a little over two months) and Brandon Duhaime setting a new career-high in goals less than two minutes later. Minus: The Caps were pretty dominant in this one…

Capitals-Wild: How the Game Was Lost

Two nights after dueling with their conference-leading counterparts in Winnipeg and falling in overtime, the Caps headed to St. Paul for a date with the Minnesota Wild, looking to even the season series. Despite controlling much of the play through the first half of the game, however, the Capitals found themselves in a 2-2 tie and it seemed like they would head into the third even. Minnesota’…

Capitals vs. Wild Game Thread 3/27

Tuesday night, the Capitals went into Winnipeg looking to even the score after an overtime loss at home to the Jets back in early February and fell just short, falling again in OT despite a late game-tying tally by the captain. Tonight is a similar tale, as the Caps head to Minnesota, already having lost in the shootout to the Wild back in DC earlier this season – here’s hoping they can get their…

Capitals vs. Sabres Game Thread 3/30

The Capitals wrap up the March portion of the 2024-25 schedule with a matinee visit from the Sabres, who head to DC fresh off a lopsided loss in Philly yesterday. The Caps will look to get back on track after their own loss in Minnesota and keep their losing streak from stretching to three. First, some admin stuff: Lines will probably stay the same (or at least start the same) as we’…

Capitals vs. Sabres Recap: Caps Comeback Cut Short in 8-5 Loss

Did Alex Ovechkin score? Yes. He scored goal #890. Plus: Both Jakob Chychrun and Aliaksei Protas joined some new clubs, with Chychrun scoring his 20th of the season and Protas picking up his 30th – new career highs for both. Minus: The Caps took too many stupid penalties, giving up goals on two of them. It’s fine now that they are top of the league but these are penalties that can’t…

Finding a Spot for Ryan Leonard

Spencer Carbery and the Capitals’ coaching staff have a very interesting dilemma to deal with, after the team announced the signing of 2023 draftee Ryan Leonard earlier today. File this under “good problems to have”, because the team’s forward lines have been pretty well set for a bit now – so where exactly do you slot the newest Washington Capital? First and foremost, it’s unlikely that…

Capitals vs. Bruins Game Thread 4/1

The Caps kick off April – and their two-game road trip – in Boston to face the Bruins, looking to snap a three-game skid. Of course, the Bruins are trying to end a losing streak of their own, having dropped eight in a row, so…something’s gotta give. First, some admin stuff: Ryan Leonard will make his NHL debut in front of family and friends at TD Garden tonight, which has caused a…

Capitals vs. Hurricanes Recap: Caps Can’t Cut Canes’ Crap in 5-1 Loss

Did Alex Ovechkin score? He sure did! Goal #892, breaking Frederik Andersen’s shutout. Plus: Alex Ovechkin scored, which is always a win. And Leonard looked even more comfortable in his second game, easily the best Capital on the ice for most of the night (low bar) – and if his teammates had been able to finish any of their shots on this night, he probably could have grabbed an assist or two.

Capitals-Hurricanes: How the Game Was Lost

Short answer: the second the game started. …but I suppose we can talk about a few things in this one. The first period, which was where the wheels came off (and never really got put back on), saw the Caps fell behind 3-0 in the first 14ish minutes of the period and gave up two of the three on the power play. So that was bad. Then it got worse. Logan Thompson – who struggled in the first…
