Capitals vs. Penguins Game Thread 2/22

Aaaaaand…we’re back, baby! The Caps return to action this weekend after almost two weeks off for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Their first challenge out of the box is a back-to-back set of matinees, starting with another meeting with the Penguins up in Pittsburgh. First, some admin stuff: Lines look pretty much the same as they were heading into the break…with games today and tomorrow…

Capitals @ Penguins Recap: 2nd-Period Explosion Powers Caps to 8-3 Win

Did Alex Ovechkin Score? 🙁 Plus: The Capitals entered today leading the league in goals off the rush this season, and it showed today when the game was still in the balance. Four of their first five goals today were of that variety, as they sliced through Pittsburgh’s defense in the neutral zone. Minus: They couldn’t keep it close enough to give Ovi a shot at an empty netter.

Capitals vs. Oilers Recap: Ovechkin Hat Trick Fuels 7-3 Win

Did Alex Ovechkin score? TWICE. Plus: It sounds crazy to say this in regards to an 8-3 win but yesterday the Caps didn’t look great, and got that lopsided win thanks to some opportunistic scoring and some lackluster goaltending and defense by their opponent. Today it was a different story, as the Caps came out and pretty much dominated from start to finish, not really letting up once they…

Capitals vs. Oilers Game Thread 2/23

Fresh off an 8-3 drubbing of the Penguins up in Pittsburgh, the Caps return home for the first of five games in DC, a matinee against the Oilers. Edmonton comes into this one following their own lopsided matinee game yesterday, but uh…they were on the wrong end of it. Here’s hoping the Caps can hold off a likely peeved Oilers crew to extend their point streak. First, some admin stuff…

The Power of Pierre-Luc Dubois

After yesterday’s 7-3 drubbing of the Oilers, Edmonton captain Connor McDavid had this to say about the 2024-25 Capitals: If Connor sounds a wee bit frustrated after that game, it’s because he probably was, thanks to spending most of his even-strength time going head to head with one Pierre-Luc Dubois…and losing. In fact, Dubois did such a masterful job on the three-time MVP that…

Capitals-Oilers: How the Game Was Won

A day after putting eight goals up on their rivals in Pittsburgh, the Capitals hit the ice and promptly dropped another touchdown, this time against a much tougher Edmonton Oilers squad. It was one of the team’s better all-around performances of the season, keeping arguably the best player in the league fairly quiet (just one assist on the day for Connor McDavid – thanks, PLD) while the Caps’…

Capitals vs. Flames Game Thread 2/25

The Caps returned to the ice with a vengeance over the weekend, piling up the goals in back-to-back matinees against the Penguins and Oilers – 15 goals scored between the two games, to be exact. They’ll look to keep the good times rolling as they play host to the Calgary Flames. First, some admin stuff: Coach Carbery went back to his early season trios last game, and they delivered…

Capitals-Flames: How the Game Was Lost

Coming off a very exciting weekend where the Caps scored 15 goals, it came as no real surprise that they would put up a dud against a middling Western Conference team. Ultimately a slow start doomed the Caps, but they didn’t give up and if they had any shooting luck left over from the weekend they would have probably made another come back win (they are tied for most in the league).

Capitals vs. Blues Recap: Sleepy Caps Lose 5-2 to St. Louis

Did Alex Ovechkin score? Nope. Plus: Connor McMichael scored his 21st goal of the season, and it was pretty. Minus: Tonight was not Charlie Lindgren’s night. The back-to-back Blues goals in the second period were a particularly rough look for him. Dylan Holloway’s goal 28 seconds after Connor McMichael’s tally was one Lindgren will definitely want back, and Colton Parayko scored 35…

Capitals-Blues: How the Game Was Lost

With last night’s 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, the Washington Capitals have lost two consecutive games in regulation for just the third time this season. The last time it happened? December 16th in Dallas and December 17 in Chicago. There were a few key factors working against Washington last night, the most obvious being they were so clearly missing Tom Wilson on the ice. He was out last…

Capitals vs. Lighting Game Thread 3/1

The Washington Capitals are looking to bounce back this afternoon after tough losses to Calgary and St. Louis this week. They scored just three goals in those two games, a far cry from the 15 goals in two games they had last weekend. Hopefully, they can get back on track when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning today. First, some admin stuff: Coach Carbery had to shift lines around on…

Capitals vs. Lightning Recap: Offense Sputters Again in 3-1 Loss

Did Alex Ovechkin score? He did! 11 to go… Plus: After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Caps did a decent job of keeping Tampa’s big guns and their high-octane offense in check, allowing them only nine shots on goal after Mitchell Chafee’s opening tally (although the eighth of those, Tampa’s first shot of the third period, ended up going in). And of course an Ovi goal is always a…

Capitals Re-Sign Charlie Lindgren

The Caps announced today that they have re-signed Charlie Lindgren to a new, three-year, $9M contract. Lindgren makes up the other half of the team’s highly successful goaltending duo; he and Logan Thompson, who signed his own six-year deal at the end of January, have combined for 38 wins, three shutouts, and a save percentage of .910. Here’s more from the team: ARLINGTON, Va.

Capitals vs. Senators Recap: Another OT Needed in 5-4 SO Win

Did Alex Ovechkin score? Nope. Plus: After dropping their last three in regulation, it felt important for the Caps to get off to a strong start in this game. They did just that, putting eight shots on net and jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the game was five minutes old. Minus: The start was good. The finish…well, that needed work, as the Caps took too many penalties and apparently…
