Chicago Bulls analyst floats two names found in trade rumors

The Chicago Bulls don’t have a ton of roster flexibility right now following the NBA draft. When (or if, though it seems much more like a when) they re-sign Josh Giddey, that will effectively be their final move, because they don’t have space for other players after re-signing Tre Jones.

They can, however, make moves by trade. They can clear up roster spots or flip players out by trading them. Two names have come up in trade rumors lately, and neither one of them is Nikola Vucevic.

Chicago Bulls insider says two players are up for trade​

Nikola Vucevic is 35 and on an expiring contract. He makes total sense for the Chicago Bulls to trade, as he still has value, is old, and is not part of the future plans. They may do that, but the two names being tossed around right now are Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu.

The two guards, according to insider K.C. Johnson, could be moved. “I can report with pretty strong certainty that I have heard Ayo Dosunmu’s name mentioned in trade chatter far more than Coby White,” Johnson reported. “That’s not to say Coby White will not be dealt, but I actually would be surprised if he is.”

He added that there’s an internal belief that White can be a part of the future. There is some faith that Dosunmu can be a good two-way player, but there’s less confidence in Dosunmu being a franchise cornerstone than in White.

The Bulls are at a bit of a crossroads. With Dosunmu and White in particular, those two players will need extensions soon. White will command a larger price tag, but both will be costly to keep. Do the Bulls continue down this current path, or do they do a soft reset and acquire assets to go with Giddey, Matas Buzelis, and Noa Essengue?

That remains to be seen, but for now, both those players are possible trade candidates, which would answer the question. If one or both is moved, it would signal at least some recognition that the front office can’t keep doing what it has been doing.

Chicago Bulls analyst believes team has makings of strong defensive duo

The Chicago Bulls selected Matas Buzelis with the 11th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. They followed it up by taking Noa Essengue, a similar mold of player, with the 12th pick a year later. That may seem like doubling down unnecessarily, especially when the team needs a center pretty badly. One team analyst, however, believes this could be the makings of something special.

Down the line, Noa Essengue and Matas Buzelis are highly likely to be key players for the Chicago Bulls. They could, in the eyes of Cam Smith, be a formidable defensive duo pretty soon. “You bring in a guy like Noa Essengue, and you think of what this Bulls team is, with the length, the versatility, the athleticism across the perimeter, and pairing him up with Matas Buzelis,” Smith said.

“You’re looking at two guys that really, as they grow into their one bodies but also their NBA careers as players, could be a formidable duo on the defensive end, but also when you think about the style of play that they’re going to play up and down and making plays at the rim,” Smith added. He said that Essengue is a player who could be a game-changer on the defensive end.

The insider also implored fans not to make the comparison between Buzelis and Essengue, because they’re two different players with different development tracks. Buzelis broke out last year and looks like a steal from the 2024 class, but Essengue may need more time to develop.

NBA: Draft

Essengue is “not as fluid or versatile” on offense as Buzelis, but Smith firmly believes that the 2025 prospect will get there “at some point.” In the meantime, he should be valuable enough on the defensive end to help shore up some shortcomings for the Bulls. The hope is that Essengue can get on the floor in year one to get meaningful minutes, something that happened and helped Buzelis develop in his rookie season.

Chicago Bulls blockbuster trade proposed by Phoenix Suns insider

The Chicago Bulls may want to explore some trades to change or diversify their roster. With so many players already signed and with Josh Giddey all but assured to be next, the roster is pretty full, so the only option is to trade. Phoenix Suns insider Gerald Bourguet has a blockbuster deal to do just that, but it may not make much sense for Chicago.

In the blockbuster proposal, Gerald Bourguet came up with Patrick Williams, Zach Collins, and Jevon Carter for Bradley Beal. The insider added that the Suns would have to get creative to make roster space for the three incoming players, but that it could be done. It involved flipping Carter and Collins, expiring contracts, for more assets, thereby leaving Williams with the Suns.

“Williams is the one you’d be stuck with. He has four years and $72 million left on his deal. That is bad,” Bourguet said. “He’s a four, so there’s that, but… he probably wouldn’t play very much because he’s not very good. That is kind of the cost of getting off of Beal’s contract.”

Bourguet said the good news is that the Suns, who don’t have any tradeable first-round picks right now, wouldn’t have to attach a first-rounder to this deal, which may or may not be true. While Williams is on a bad contract, it’s not as bad as the Beal deal. And Chicago would be depleting valuable depth, especially in the frontcourt, to take on Beal, so there’s hardly any incentive for the Bulls.

Beal does have two years left on a bad deal, whereas Williams has four, but Williams is much cheaper overall, and Chicago doesn’t get better in this trade. It might be worth trying to get off of Williams’ contract, but not at the cost of $50.2 million Beal.

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers

Bourguet said this is a rare situation where a team won’t ask the Suns what they get in return for taking on Bradley Beal, but that doesn’t feel accurate, either. The Bulls may have a history of ineptitude, with Williams’ contract maybe being a good example of that, but they’re not stupid.

This is a team with a better future than Phoenix and one with a play-in game appearance and some possible building blocks. To tank all the growth and potential play-in or even playoff appearances next year with a wide-open East would be silly, especially without even getting draft compensation in return.

“The Bulls are notorious for taking bad deals where they do not get draft picks back for whatever reason,” Bourguet said. That may have been true, but this is a little more egregious than most deals, and the Bulls would probably not want to do it.

Report: Chicago Bulls nowhere near huge Josh Giddey contract

The Chicago Bulls had one main goal this offseason, and that was to bring back Josh Giddey. One offseason after they flipped Alex Caruso for him, Giddey hit restricted free agency. The young guard played well in his one season with Chicago. His youth and talent indicated that a pretty substantial deal was imminent.

The expectation initially was that he’d sign for $30 million per season, something like the five-year, $150 million deal Jalen Suggs signed with the Orlando Magic. But with virtually no competition, the Bulls have tried to get a better deal for their books. So far, a deal is not remotely near.

There was a report that Josh Giddey might ask for north of $30 million on his contract with the Bulls. Whatever he is asking for, whether it’s more or less than that benchmark, is apparently a lot more than the Bulls want to pay.

Per Drew Stevens, the two sides are “the Gulf of Mexico apart.” In other words, there is still a chasm between what each side is willing to do, and there’s no end to the negotiation in sight. Chicago may be trying to spend less because they don’t view Giddey as the best player on a competitive team. That’s part of why the Oklahoma City Thunder traded him and then immediately won the NBA Finals.

Giddey may be pointing to his excellent play for them, notably after the All-Star Break, where he guided them to a Play-In Tournament outing and helped them finish the season on a pretty high note, their crash-and-burn loss to Miami notwithstanding.

Either way, there’s a disconnect in the value. Naturally, Giddey is higher on himself than others might be. The Bulls, whether it’s because of his defensive limitations or lower ceiling, are lower on him. Right now, that’s causing a rift between the two sides. However, with no real competition and no traction with any other teams despite his RFA status, Giddey and the Bulls can continue to work things out.

Chicago Bulls insiders discuss mock trade for star guard

There are two Chicago Bulls guards who have come up in trade talks this offseason. Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White have, with Dosunmu being viewed as the more likely player to be moved. The Bulls have little roster flexibility right now, so trades are the only way they can really change things.

Flipping Dosunmu would provide that flexibility while adding some resources, presumably. What could Chicago even get for the guard? A few insiders posited one mock trade to consider.

If Ayo Dosunmu gets traded, the Chicago Bulls could end up with a fairly decent return. Cam Smith suggested a deal including Dosunmu and a 2028 second-round pick for Brandon Clarke of the Memphis Grizzlies. “Clarke is a lively body that plays in the frontcourt, very athletic, and would fit Billy Donovan’s system,” Smith said.

David Haugh admitted that he’d prefer to get someone without an injury concern back for Dosunmu. Clarke missed the 2024-25 season with an Achilles tear. Gabe Ramirez said that moving for Clarke would help Chicago finally cement the power forward spot since Patrick Williams hasn’t really worked out.

Ramirez added that the injury history could mean the Bulls land Clarke for cheap. Smith circled back to say that the Memphis star could be motivated to get back and better than ever, which would be good for the Bulls.

Since Dosunmu is a former second-round pick, the value in trading him and a future second-round pick for Clarke is not terrible. Dosunmu has been very good and fits the Bulls’ system well, but they don’t necessarily have as much of a need for guards right now.

Dosunmu is in the final year of his contract, which makes him an easy trade target. Contending teams love to bring in short-term rentals, and they could do worse than adding a two-way guard like Dosunmu. There’s no guarantee he gets traded, but it’s plausible, and the Bulls might want to do it to quietly get some more assets while they refuse to outright tear down and rebuild.

The Chicago Bulls do surprisingly well in grading for their offseason

The Chicago Bulls will have quite a to-do list this offseason, with checking off the NBA Draft as the first order of business. The next step for the Bulls is free agency, which is still in its infancy, but has seen a few big deals get signed.

The Bulls have been relatively quiet so far this offseason, but have made a splash this free agency, by re-signing point guard Tre Jones to a three-year deal, which will see him paid $24 million. The Bulls acquired Jones at last season’s Trade Deadline when they traded guard Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings as part of a three-team deal that included the San Antonio Spurs, and saw Kevin Huerter and Zach Collins as the two others joining Jones in the return.

Outside of re-signing Jones, the Bulls’ main priority will be to re-sign restricted free agent Josh Giddey, who is seeking a $30 million a year deal. The Bulls will also look to trade guards Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu, who are candidates to be traded, with Jones returning and the Bulls already trading away Lonzo Ball.

Center Nikola Vucevic is another player the Bulls will look to trade away this offseason, but may find it hard to find a team to acquire Vucevic, with it reported that the market for Vucevic has all but dried up. The Bulls may have to buy out Vucevic, which hurts the rebuild, but it may be their only option to free them of his salary. With some moves made already, and some still to come, the Bulls did receive a decent grade for their offseason.

Fans were skeptical of the Bulls heading into this offseason, but there should be room for optimism for how things have been handled and what they can do in the months ahead. The Bulls’ solid start to the offseason didn’t go unnoticed, with Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz ranking all 30 of the NBA teams’ offseasons so far, with the Bulls getting a grade of “B.”

Swartz’s assessment of the Bulls via Bleacher Report:

“As we await the fate of Josh Giddey, the Chicago Bulls secure their backup point guard position by bringing Jones back on a three-year, $24 million deal.

This is a really good value for Chicago, as Jones is still only 25 years old and was very solid after being traded to the Bulls last season (14.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists, 57.1 percent from three in nine starts).

Chicago has assembled a locker room full of big, long forwards in Matas Buzelis, Noa Essengue and Patrick Williams. They’ll need as much playmaking as possible to maximize these wings, with the return of Jones a big help.”

The Bulls still have a ways to go​

There’s still a long way for the Bulls to go before they have a completed roster to start next season, but they have a solid foundation to start. Matas Buzelis, Giddey, Jones, and now Essengue are a nice young core, and even if they can’t trade away Vucevic, having him around gives them a nice veteran presence in the locker room.

The Bulls are one of the teams vying to sign restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors, but have some stiff competition to sign him, with Evan Sidery of Forbes reporting that the Washington Wizards are the latest team to enter the sweepstakes.

If the Bulls can find a way to acquire Kuminga and re-sign Giddey, they will be in a good spot to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, given the state of some of the top teams after injuries to their star players.

Chicago Bulls: One Western Conference contender loses interest in big man

The Chicago Bulls should be one of the more active teams during this offseason, as they have a couple of players on their roster who they could look to trade. The three names who are up for grabs are guards Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu and center Nikola Vucevic, all of whom would bring in a decent haul back.

The Bulls recently re-signed point guard Tre Jones to a three-year deal worth $24 million, which came after the Bulls traded guard Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Isaac Okoro, who will provide some depth at forward. Trading Ball and re-signing Jones could signal the end of the road for either Dosunmu or White, as Jones and Josh Giddey will see the bulk of the minutes at the point guard position.

However, the Bulls may have a hard time finding a suitor for Vucevic, as one Western Conference contender has backed away from Vucevic in favor of someone else.

The Bulls may have a harder time finding a team to trade Vucevic to, as NBA Insider Jake Fischer reports that the Golden State Warriors have lost interest in trading for Vucevic and have shifted their sights onto free-agent center Al Horford. The Warriors had interest in Vucevic as the Trade Deadline approached this past season, but a deal never came about.

Bulls Insider for CHSN K.C. Johnson and NBA Contributor for Forbes Evan Sidery previously reported that the Bulls were “openly shopping” Vucevic, and it was first mentioned that the Warriors were starting to lose interest in Vucevic.

Fischer’s reporting all but confirms Johnson’s and Sidery’s original reporting and that the Bulls will have to look elsewhere if they’re to find a trade partner for Vucevic.

What other teams need a big man like Vucevic?​

Even though the Warriors have bailed out and are no longer an option for the Bulls to trade Vucevic to, they still have a few options to find a deal. Three contending teams need a big man like Vucevic, with those teams being the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics, and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Of those teams, the Lakers are the team most in need of a center, as they traded away Anthony Davis last season in the deal to acquire Luka Dončić. The Lakers need to figure out a way to improve the roster to please LeBron James, as he has hinted he could look to take his talents elsewhere if the Lakers don’t put together a championship-caliber roster.

Vucevic could be just that for the Lakers, as he did well played in 72 games, where he averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 31.2 minutes per game. With the Lakers pushed into a corner, the Bulls could have the upper hand in getting a deal done, as the Lakers don’t want to lose someone like LeBron.

Derrick Rose to serve as Grand Marshal for NASCAR Chicago Street Race

The city of Chicago will be in the spotlight once again this weekend as NASCAR is back in the Windy City for the third-straight year. And this year, a Chicago legend in Derrick Rose will serve as the Grand Marshal for the event.

NASCAR announced on Tuesday that the former Chicago Bulls star and NBA MVP will be the Grand Marshal to kickoff the race on July 6th in Grant Park. Rose will give the “Drivers start your engines” command head of the third running of the NASCAR Cup Series Race.

Previous years have seen Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields (2023) and running back Matt Forte (2024) have the honors.

“Chicago is one of the best sports towns in the world, and NASCAR is proud to be a part of that historic Chicago sports culture,” said Julie Giese, NASCAR Chicago Street Race President. “Derrick Rose is one of the most beloved sports icons in the city’s history, and we look forward to having him get NASCAR’s only street race underway.”

Josh Giddey sent Chicago Bulls a $150 million message: Report

The Chicago Bulls and Josh Giddey took a gamble last season, and it appears the power forward won the challenge before his fifth year in the NBA.

The Bulls sent Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder last year in exchange for Giddey. The Bulls and Giddey were unable to agree to terms before he became a restricted free agent this summer. Giddey, 22, is coming off a season where he averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game.

Per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Giddey wants a contract that is in the range of what the Orlando Magic gave Jalen Suggs at $150.5 million on a five-year deal.

“A source told the Sun-Times that the Bulls and Giddey’s camp were having positive discussions, but Giddey still would like to get the Jalen Suggs contract of $30 million per year,” Cowley wrote. “Suggs was selected fifth overall in the 2021 draft by the Magic, and Giddey was taken at No. 6.

“The Magic gave their floor general a five-year, $150.5 million extension last offseason. Both players have had some growing pains and setbacks along the way, but Giddey and his representation feel that’s where he also should be slotted.

“That was the number Giddey threw out at the Bulls last fall, and the team opted to wait. A stellar second half of the season, however, played in his favor.”

Should the Chicago Bulls hand Giddey $150 million?​

Because Giddey is a restricted free agent, they can let Giddey test the market to see if a team is willing to come close to $30 million per year and match the offer. The Bulls don’t appear to be in any hurry to give Giddey the $30 million per year willingly, let alone $150 over five years.

Chicago has a poor history of overpaying players like Zach LaVine and Patrick Williams.

NBA insider predicts huge Chicago Bulls trade

The Chicago Bulls haven’t been terribly active all offseason. They swapped Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro, made their two draft selections, and re-signed Tre Jones. A Josh Giddey extension is probably on the way, but he remains a restricted free agent as of now.

The quiet could be the calm before the storm. The Bulls have been linked to another star restricted free agent for a long time, and there’s a decent chance the two sides finally come up with something. At least one NBA insider thinks they will.

The Golden State Warriors wanted to re-sign Jonathan Kuminga, but a diminished role as well as the arrival and then extension of Jimmy Butler made that a difficult future to foresee. Even now, there’s been very little traction on that front.

The Chicago Bulls were pegged as a possible sign-and-trade landing spot, and that theory has reared its head once more. Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus said Kuminga was the third-best FA left and that he’s probably headed to the Windy City.

“If the 22-year-old can find a team willing to give what he’s seeking, or close to what Golden State was willing to do last year, he’ll need an offer sheet as a restricted free agent,” Pincus said. “Another path is a sign-and-trade, but that’s complicated by multiple rules and the Warriors’ potential reluctance to spend under the new rules.”

Pincus’ final prediction was that “the Warriors find a sign-and-trade, perhaps with a team like the Chicago Bulls.” It is unclear what the Bulls would have to give up. Salary matching might be tough, and it’s fair to assume that they don’t want to sign-and-trade Josh Giddey, since they want to keep him.

Perhaps they can attach some future capital to Patrick Williams (and others to meet whatever salary Kuminga signs for, because it will be more than Williams’ $18 million), and convince the Warriors to take on that contract in order to get off of Kuminga.

Chicago Bulls insider explains why ‘panic meter is pretty high’ surrounding Josh Giddey

Chicago Bulls restricted free agent Josh Giddey believes he’s worth $30 million per year following a surge in the second half of last season that helped the team make the Play-In Tournament in April. However, it doesn’t appear like the Bulls have any intention of matching Giddey’s wish.

During Tuesday’s edition of “The Fastbreak” show, CHSN’s K.C. Johnson said “the panic meter is pretty high” regarding Giddey’s free agency based on the feedback he receives from fans. The situation is dire for Giddey’s camp as well.

Johnson said the Bulls are playing the situation wisely, and that Giddey isn’t expected to receive $30 million per year. While both Giddey and the Bulls want to get a deal done, the Bulls have never brought up a deal that would pay the former Oklahoma City Thunder first-round pick $30 million per year.

“I don’t have particular numbers other than to say that Josh Giddey’s $30 million a year price tag that has been well-documented in media and out there since last fall when the rookie contract extension was discussed, has not ever crossed my radar,” Johnson said.

“I have never heard the Bulls mention that number. So I would not expect Josh Giddey to sign a $30 million deal.”

Nowhere for Josh Giddey to go​

Johnson said the Brooklyn Nets were the only team with the cap space to send an offer Giddey’s way. After the Nets traded for Michael Porter Jr., Brooklyn no longer has the money. Up to this point, there have been no “sign and trade machinations” involving Giddey, per Johnson.

While the Bulls have most of the leverage, Giddey has one out. He can decide to play the upcoming season on a one-year qualifying offer worth $11.1 million. Giddey would then become an unrestricted free agent next summer, which would not be optimal for Chicago.

The Bulls have no reason to rush to finalize a deal, but Giddey should feel lucky to receive even a $25 million per year offer from Chicago.

Chicago Bulls have had ‘conversations’ with Lakers over trade: Report

The Chicago Bulls traded away Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the team still has a few more players to think about offloading before the upcoming season.

Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Nikola Vucevic are the main players that the Bulls can trade to other teams this summer. One of those players is catching the attention of a Los Angeles Lakers team that wants to boost its roster for a postseason run next spring.

Per Anthony Irvin of Clutch Points, the Lakers have had discussions with the Bulls about Dosunmu.

“Sources say Matisse Thybulle, Marcus Smart (though most teams are watching to see if he’s going to be bought out), Ayo Dosunmu and others are names the Lakers have had preliminary conversations with teams about availability and price, though no offers have been made,” Irvin wrote.

The Bulls drafted Dosunmu in the second round of the 2021 draft out of Illinois. Dosunmu, 25, is a native of Chicago and played at Morgan Park High School. Dosunmu averaged 12.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game last year. He appeared in 46 games and started 26, averaging 30.3 minutes per contest.

Dosunmu’s season ended in March following surgery to repair a fracture in the back of his left shoulder.

Lakers general manager and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka wants to use the Summer League this month to help further trade talks.

“Rob (Pelinka) likes Vegas because he can just pull so-and-so aside and have a conversation that would otherwise take a little planning,” an Eastern Conference executive told Irvin.. “Summer league has become a real opportunity for all of us in that way.”

Can the Bulls take advantage of an opportunity in Vegas to help the rebuild by trading away a few pieces?

Chicago Bulls 2025 rookie drawing comparison to Matas Buzelis

The Chicago Bulls selected Matas Buzelis with the 11th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Fast forward a year, and it looks like they landed one of the steals of the class. Buzelis played well in 2024, and a weaker draft class means he represents easily one of the best picks made.

In 2025, the Bulls picked 12th, and they selected Noa Essengue. The pick may have surprised some, given their need for a center and the fact that Essengue wasn’t a consensus player in that range. However, early on, the Bulls’ rookie is drawing comparisons directly to Buzelis.

Chicago Bulls insider K.C. Johnson reported that the word on Noa Essengue early on in the summer is that he is “mentally strong.” How has that manifested itself so far? The rookie has targeted and gone after Matas Buzelis every single day in practice.

“This is a good sign if you’re a Bulls fan, because this is a young, hungry kid, similar to Matas Buzelis last year,” Johnson said. That turned out pretty well for the Bulls, so there’s real hope that they might’ve found a diamond in the rough in 2025 as well.

Buzelis said about Essengue,” What I do is I look for love of the game in a player. If you have love for the game, then you’re going to hit your potential, whatever that is. This guy [Essengue] has love for the game.” How does Buzelis know this? Because Essengue beat the second-year pro to the practice facility on the very first day of practice.

That is something, Johnson reported, that Buzelis prides himself on, so if someone’s outdoing him, then he’s definitely motivated. “This is a guy who’s in the gym early, staying late, [even though] obviously a lot is being thrown at him,” Johnson concluded.

The Bulls are in desperate need of true franchise cornerstones. They’re still not sure what to do with Coby White, and they’re in negotiation with Josh Giddey, but he doesn’t exactly feel like a face-of-the-franchise player, either. Maybe it’s Buzelis, but it might also be Essengue.

Chicago Bulls get good news in Josh Giddey negotiations

Josh Giddey and the Chicago Bulls are embroiled in a contract negotiation. The star guard is a restricted free agent, which means the Bulls can match any offer he gets. However, as of now, it seems to be strictly the two of them. No one else has attempted to poach Giddey from the Bulls.

As a result, the Bulls don’t have to give in to what Giddey wants. It was reported early on that the guard wanted at least $30 million per year, a cost that would’ve been fairly exorbitant for a player of his caliber. Fortunately for Chicago, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Early expectations were that the Jalen Suggs deal, which was five years and $150 million, was the likely end result for the Chicago Bulls with Josh Giddey. Some reports stated that Giddey wanted more, but the expectation was that $30 million was likely.

However, since no other teams are willing to go that high with Giddey or even willing to attempt to outbid the Bulls right now, Chicago has all the leverage. According to one new report from RealGM, they’re unlikely to pay him the $30 million tag.

The two sides remain likely to reach a deal, but it’s not imminent now. It has been a very slow process so far. The Bulls have played this well, as they have let the market dry up, and there’s not much interest in any restricted free agents right now. Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors is experiencing the same thing.

This leaves Giddey with two options. First, he can wait and continue fighting it out with the Bulls, even though he’s probably going to have to settle for less than he’s looking for. Second, he can sign the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

The qualifying offer is essentially a one-year, $11 million deal with a full no-trade clause. That might not be in Giddey’s best interest, though. For one, it’s a small salary for the upcoming season, but there’s no guarantee that Giddey’s value will go up.

The Bulls might want to sign him for $24 million annually now, but if he doesn’t play as well in 2025-26, that price could drop to $20 million or less. Giddey’s value could be at a high right now. It could also be at a low, which is where the decision has to be made by the player and his team.

Chicago Bulls rookie struggles in his first NBA contest

The Chicago Bulls opened their first summer league game by getting blown out by the Toronto Raptors 116-72. The NBA Summer League is an exciting time for the next generation to gain some NBA experience and showcase their skills to their new fan bases.

For the Bulls, their summer league focuses on two of their young stars, Matas Buzelis and their draft pick from this past draft, forward Noa Essengue. Essengue is an 18-year-old from France and has the potential to be a decent NBA player, but he’s a project for the time being.

It will take time for Essengue to get his footing and feel comfortable playing in the league, but his first appearance in the summer league didn’t go as he or the Bulls had hoped.

The Bulls weren’t the only ones who had a rough night to begin the summer league season, as Essengue showed why it will take time to adjust to the pace of an NBA game. Even though he’s not going against grown men and hardened NBA veterans, Essengue struggled to put up quality numbers against guys closer to his age.

In his first 24 minutes as an NBA player, Essengue only scored 5.0 points, took down 3.0 rebounds, and was 2-7 from the field. Essengue also committed three personal fouls while making only one shot from behind the arc in three attempts. The worst part of Essengue’s night was him turning the ball over seven times and not having one assist on his line.

Essengue spoke to reporters after the game, talking to them about his performance, telling the Chicago Tribune’s Julia Poe that he was “disappointed” in himself.

“I’m disappointed,” Essengue said. “That’s my first game. But I just have to take in. I can just get better right now. That just gives me more confidence.”

There are some positives, however, as Essengue recognized some areas where he needs to improve, pointing to his dribbling skills and his inability to attack the basket.

“I need to improve everything — my dribble, my shooting skills, my go to the basket,” Essengue said. “I missed a lot of shots, I did a lot of turnovers.”

A long road ahead for the youngster​

Thankfully for Essengue, this is only his first action in an NBA contest, and he has a long road ahead of him to improve himself and be better than he was the day before. The Bulls may have something special in Essengue once he fully develops, with some comparing him to another Giannis Antetokounmpo, but he needs to prove that by getting better.

For now, Essengue needs to focus on slowing the game down and improving in the areas he said he needs. That’s what the summer league is for, and hopefully, we’ll see him make those adjustments each game.

Chicago Bulls rookie Noa Essengue exits Summer League game with injury

Chicago Bulls rookie forward Noa Essengue exited Saturday’s game against the Sacramento Kings with an injury, per multiple reports. Essengue recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist before leaving the game at Cox Pavilion.

He was a minus-four on the court.

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, Essengue appeared to injure his right leg and had to leave for medical attention in the locker room.

“Essengue is favoring his right leg,” Johnson posted. “Did something to it while navigating over a screen. Checks out.”

Essengue, the No. 12 pick in June’s draft, finished with five points, three rebounds, no assists, and three steals in the Bulls’ 116-72 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. He was a minus-34 on the court during his 24 minutes of play in the Bulls’ Summer League opener.
The Bulls drafted Essengue to give the roster size at forward to pair with second-year forward Matas Buzelis. Chicago is hoping those two can gain chemistry on the court during the summer.
It’s unclear how serious Essengu’s injury is at this time or if he will miss any more games. The Bulls will next play the Indiana Pacers on Monday.

A selection of NBA heroes from the Chicago area

When most people think of Chicago and basketball, the name Michael Jordan immediately springs to mind. It’s understandable, given Jordan’s legacy in the sport and the numerous iconic moments associated with the Chicago Bulls hero, but the greatest player to have played in the NBA isn’t actually from Chicago.

It should come as no surprise to learn that Chicago has produced a plethora of basketball stars. It’s a sports-mad city, with fan-made YouTube channels interviewing people on the streets, there are team jerseys on display on a regular basis, and fans everywhere play NBA DFS and other enticing basketball-themed offerings. Overall, it’s a fantastic place for sports lovers to live.

With Chicago, therefore, being the ideal breeding ground for aspiring sportspeople, below we celebrate some NBA heroes from the Chicago area who made it to the very top of the sport and continue to inspire the local population in the process.

Derrick Rose​

Derrick Rose had a tough life during his younger days, but his desire to become a professional basketball player never waned. Rose eventually made it, becoming the homegrown Bulls hero fans love to see. Entering the league in 2008, his class was clear from the start. Derrick Rose helped improve the fortunes of the Bulls, becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history in 2011 at the tender age of 22. His accomplishments are certainly not to be sniffed at, especially as they would’ve been even more impressive had Rose not suffered numerous injury issues.

Anthony Davis​

Anthony Davis is the classic example of a player who simply never stands still. When he burst onto the scene, not many expected him to kick on that much. In the end, Davis has become a dominant force in the NBA after becoming a professional in 2012. He was key to the Lakers’ 2020 success, and he looks set to record even more triumphs in the future.

Dwyane Wade​

A professional player many diehard basketball fans from the Chicago area tend to rave about, Dwyane Wade had a fantastic career in the NBA, especially during his days with the Heat. Wade’s 13-year stay with the Heat was a highly successful one. He didn’t just shine on the court on a regular basis, but he was also a player fans loved to watch. Wade’s top showings helped him earn 12 All-Star trips and eight All-NBA honors, plus a whole host of other notable awards. He then returned home to Chicago, although his peak years were probably behind him. Still, as an all-round player, Dwyane Wade is definitely one of the best from Chicago.

Eddie Johnson​

A professional basketball player for 17 seasons, Eddie Johnson had a solid career in the sport, putting up 16 points and four rebounds per game. Johnson won the 1988-89 Sixth Man of the Year Award; he was a small forward who delivered consistently solid displays, and he was a player who was well-liked by fans of teams like the Phoenix Suns and the Charlotte Hornets.

Isiah Thomas​

An inspiration to many smaller basketball athletes out there, Isiah Thomas was a fantastic player. The diminutive character bucked the trend of seeing giants dominate the sport, with his natural all-round ability and high skill level making him a joy to watch. Thomas experienced the best spell of his career with the Pistons, picking up 19.2 points and 9.3 assists per game. As a result, he was an All-Star regular. In fact, he made the selection a staggering 12 times in a row thanks to his title-winning campaigns for Detroit. Thomas also deservedly entered the Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Chicago Bulls have not done a ton this offseason, but that’s because they largely can’t. They’re engrossed in deep contract negotiations with Josh Giddey. They flipped Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro. They re-signed Tre Jones and made their two draft picks, but that’s basically it.

There’s been no Nikola Vucevic trade, no tearing it down, and not even a draft-day trade for future assets. It’s been pretty quiet, and one insider described it not in a good way.

The one word that Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes chose to describe the Chicago Bulls’ offseason so far is “stuck.” The Bulls are stuck, and they honestly might have been stuck for a long time. They just don’t resemble a team moving in the right direction.

“Unless you’re convinced incoming trade acquisition Isaac Okoro is a huge upgrade over the outgoing Lonzo Ball, it’s hard to see how the Chicago Bulls will improve on last year’s 39 wins,” Hughes said of the only major move the Bulls have made.

“Organic growth from Matas Buzelis might make a moderate difference, but expected decline from vets like Nikola Vucević ought to balance things out on the bottom line,” he added, and that’s assuming that Vucević remains on the roster for the entire season, which is highly unlikely.

“Tre Jones is back, Josh Giddey almost certainly will be, too—only with a giant raise in restricted free agency,” the insider added. “And that’s pretty much it for Chicago, a team seemingly so satisfied with its middling position that it handed extensions to GM Arturas Karnisovas and head coach Billy Donovan.”

And then in a biting, sarcastic conclusion, Hughes said, “When you can lock in a core that sometimes wins almost as many games as it loses, you’ve got to do it.” That appears to be what the Bulls are aiming for right now, with moves to remain largely the same team with one role player swapped out and seemingly a second version of Buzelis in the 2025 selection, Noa Essengue.

Chicago Bulls reveal injury update on rookie; Matas Buzelis’ status for Monday

The Chicago Bulls revealed a couple of key updates on two players before their Summer League game Monday against the Indiana Pacers at Cox Pavilion. The Bulls sat Matas Buzelis during their game Saturday against the Sacramento Kings after he was dinged up against the Toronto Raptors on Friday night.

Bulls rookie Noa Essengue suffered a leg injury against the Kings and had to exit the game in the third quarter. He limped back to the bench but did not return to the game, and Chicago was unsure on Saturday night if he’d be available for Monday’s contest.

Per the Bulls, Buzelis and Essengue are in the starting lineup for Monday’s game, revealing a positive update on their second-year forward and the No. 12 pick in this year’s draft.

The Chicago Bulls’ plans for Matas Buzelis​

Essengue finished Friday night’s game with five points, three rebounds, no assists, and three steals in the Bulls’ 116-72 loss to the Raptors. He was a minus-34 on the court during his 24 minutes of play in the Bulls’ Summer League opener. He added 12 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist (minus-four on the court) before leaving Saturday night’s game.

Monday night’s game might be the last Summer League action for Buzelis. Per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bulls planned to start Buzelis in only two games this month.

“The original plan for forward Matas Buzelis, the Bulls’ first-round pick in 2024, was to play in the first two games, then shut it down, but because of how physical the Raptors played him, he was held out of the second game, and the hope was to have him back Monday against the Pacers,” Cowley wrote.

Buzelis recorded 17 points, five rebounds, and one assist against the Raptors on Friday night. He was a minus-23 on the court.

Chicago Bulls: Matas Buzelis has clear goals for Year 2

In the first year of the Matas Buzelis era, the Chicago Bulls won 39 games and made it to the play-in game as the ninth seed. They lost in brutal fashion, crashing back into the lottery. That postseason experience could prove to be valuable for Buzelis, who is now entering his second season in the NBA with a clear goal in mind.

Matas Buzelis got a little taste of winning in his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls. They won 39 games, which is not a large number, but it is more than many lottery teams from 2024 managed to win the following season. They also made the Play-In Tournament.

In 2025-26, Buzelis’ goal is to win. “Win as many games as possible. It’s obviously going to be a tough season. Every year is a tough season, so I’d say just win as many games as possible,” he said. “Everything comes down to winning at the end of the day. Everything comes down to winning, so every minute detail, from recovery to going to the gym early to working hard in practice, it’s all going to matter. I want to win.”

Bad news for the goal​

The Bulls are bringing back largely the same team. They drafted Noa Essengue in the lottery in 2025, and he serves as the only major acquisition. They traded Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro and are in the process of attempting to re-sign Josh Giddey, so it’s almost entirely the same roster that won 39 games.

That may be bad news for Buzelis’ goal. Aside from himself and Essengue, the players on the team are largely veterans who are probably not primed for big year-to-year jumps. Buzelis had a very promising rookie season, and his year-two jump might be the determining factor in how much better Chicago can get in 2025-26.

But his goals make it sound as if he’s going to put in all the extra work and drive himself to continue getting better so that he can impact winning, and hopefully help the Bulls get better and get into the playoffs this season.
