Impossible? How the Bulls stole a shocking win against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets

The Chicago Bulls arrived at Ball Arena tired and facing long odds, yet somehow managed one of the season’s most unlikely victories 130-127 over Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Nothing about the matchup suggested a close game.

Not after a double-overtime loss to the Jazz the night before and not at Denver’s high altitude. Not against a Nuggets squad accustomed to protecting their homecourt. Still, the Bulls tapped into another level just when it seemed all signs pointed to defeat.

The stats tell the story better than any narrative could. Denver’s starters controlled the floor with a +14.1 net rating, appearing to dominate from start to finish. Their bench, however, fell apart, registering a shocking -17.1. That 31.2-point swing between the two units was the largest margin by a starting lineup that still lost a game this season.

Last night, Denver's starters were 31.2 net points better than their bench, +14.1 to -17.1, and they lost by 3 to the Bulls). That was the best performance by starters to lose a game this year.espnanalytics.com/nba-box?id=2…(Chicago's win came with second-worst starters of year.)

Usually, a split like that ends contests early, but this time it created just enough of an opening for the Bulls to capitalize.

The Bulls held their ground, even as their starters delivered the second-worst showing of any unit all season.

Josh Giddey paced Chicago with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists, while Kevin Huerter added 20 points, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc.

Chicago leaned on timely defensive plays, endurance at altitude, and poise beyond expectations in a matchup that favored Denver. Jokic controlled the pace as usual. Kevin Huerter knocked down reliable shots. Still, none of that mattered once the Nuggets’ bench faltered and the Bulls kept pressing their advantage.

The Bulls proved difficult to guard, thanks to a versatile roster with six players scoring 13 points or more. Even with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray pouring in 36 and 34 points, the Nuggets’ defensive lapses left them vulnerable.

The Nuggets faced their own struggles in Monday’s defeat, but the Bulls clearly played the better game. Denver can use the loss as a teaching moment, and with a favorable stretch of upcoming matchups, they should be able to limit setbacks moving forward.

After pulling off such an improbable victory, the question becomes how high the Bulls can actually rise if they continue stealing games like this.

Nikola Vucevic: ‘I felt confident in my shot’ as he delivers Chicago Bulls’ win

Nikola Vucevic delivered the dagger as he buried a buzzer beating three that lifted the Chicago Bulls to a 122-121 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in a wild finish on the road.

Portland mounted a fierce push in Thursday’s matchup, nearly flipping the script with a massive fourth quarter run. After trailing by 16 at the start of the period, the Blazers stormed back, and a Deni Avdija three knotted the game at 116 with just over a minute to play.

A Donovan Clingan and-one nudged Portland ahead, and Avdija followed by converting only one of his free throws, giving the Blazers a 120 – 116 cushion with 16.2 seconds left.

Coby White kept Chicago afloat by drilling a deep three that chopped the deficit to 120 to 119, and Jerami Grant’s split at the line opened the door for one last push. Vucevic walked right through it and delivered the winner.

Josh Giddey started the action by delivering the inbound to White, who attacked the paint and then kicked the ball out to Vucevic in the corner. Vucevic rose up and drilled the heart breaker for the Blazers, as the Bulls erupted the moment it splashed through.

“It felt good, I didn’t make any shots in the fourth … just not a great fourth quarter for me overall and the team … I just felt confident in my shot, and glad it went in, glad we got the win,” Nikola Vucevic said during his post-game interview via CHSN. “Obviously, I wish we closed the game off sooner, but it feels great to get the game-winner, it feels special, you always enjoy them a lot.”

Asked about the Bulls’ resilience after giving up the lead, Vucevic said it reflects well on the group but also came with a warning. “It says a lot, but we can’t always sit here and talk about resilience. At some point, we have to beat a team that once we do get up 10-15, almost 20 points tonight, stay with our foot on the gas and finish the game off.”

Vucevic powered the Bulls with 27 points and White chipped in 25 off the bench. Giddey didn’t have his cleanest outing, shooting 3-of-9 for nine points with five turnovers, but he still handed out 13 assists and pulled down five boards.

The 35-year-old hit his second straight game-winner, building on a decisive three-pointer that secured a tight win over Denver earlier in the week. The Bulls wrapped up their Northwest road trip with a 2-1 record and are riding a two-game winning streak after dropping five in a row.

The “cardiac” Chicago Bulls flirted with another disaster on Wednesday night.

More News: Bulls’ Josh Giddey sends urgent warning to team

The Bulls were outscored 39-24 in the fourth quarter before Nikola Vučević hit a game-winning three to give Chicago a 122-121 win over the 6-9 Portland Trail Blazers in front of 17,795 fans at the Moda Center.

Chicago went 2-1 during its West Coast trip, dropping a game they should have won against the Utah Jazz but upsetting the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. Those games were decided by a total of seven points.

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, the Bulls are tied for having the third most clutch games in the NBA this season and are 6-4 in such games.

Vucevic was the hero on Thursday night, leading Chicago with 27 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

More News: Bulls’ Billy Donovan admits team has been ‘disconnected’

Coby White made his second appearance of the season against the Trailblazers, adding 25 points and seven assists in 27 minutes. Following the game-winning basket, White praised Vucevic for what he brings to the Bulls.

“He’s our connector,” White said. “He’s our leader. He makes big-time plays. He’s super important to what we do. We rely on him. He has a high IQ and good feel for the game. He’s so dangerous. He can roll. He can pop. He’s a really, really good basketball player.”

Vucevic, 35, is averaging 16.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game this season. He’s helping to keep the Bulls in the early playoff hunt.

However, Chicago could use the veteran big man as a trade asset before the deadline. While White knows what he can bring to the team, the Bulls aren’t going anywhere if Vucevic is the connector they need to beat teams like Portland.

Bulls’ Isaac Okoro’s advanced stats tell a complicated story

Oct 29, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bulls forward Isaac Okoro (35) drives to the basket against the Sacramento Kings during the first half at United Center. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

Isaac Okoro has become one of the Chicago Bulls’ early-season talking points, fueling several narratives that fans are debating online. The Bulls, like every NBA team, have plenty of storylines.

Okoro’s role stands out as the most polarizing. He’s a role player elevated to the starting lineup and playing steady rotation minutes, averaging about 25 per game with 19 in his latest outing.

In his last 12 games, Isaac Okoro is shooting 50% from the field, 40.5% from 3, 83.3% from the FT line. In this same timeframe, Kevin Huerter is shooting 32% from 3. & PWill is shooting 39-40-70. The stats are the stats. https://t.co/K0mB1B2l7z

— See Red Fred (@cbefred) November 21, 2025

Over his last 12 games, Isaac Okoro has quietly found his touch by shooting 50 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from three, and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. During that same stretch, Kevin Huerter has hit just 32 percent of his threes, and Patrick Williams has hovered around splits of 39 percent from the field, 40 percent from deep, and 70 percent at the line. The numbers speak for themselves.

Supporters view him more as a defensive tone setter brought in to reshape the Bulls’ identity, while critics argue he hasn’t made the impact they expected and should be moved to the bench or even out of the rotation entirely.

Stats don’t lie for the Bulls’ and Isaac Okoro

But the stats also don’t back up the claims about Okoro’s individual defense. NBA.com lists him with a 118.7 defensive rating, meaning opponents score nearly 118 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor.

That’s not the profile of a defensive stopper. At the same time, the blame doesn’t fall solely on him because he shares the court with several players who aren’t known for their defense. In fact, no rotation player on the Bulls has posted a defensive rating better than 113 this season.

Another factor is the caliber of players Okoro consistently faces. He has spent much of the season chasing primary options like Cade Cunningham, Paolo Banchero, Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jamal Murray, and that is a demanding assignment for any defender. His defensive rating likely stems from being asked to slow down elite scorers every night rather than any shortcomings in his approach.

Okoro’s offensive rating has collapsed from 121 last season to 111 this year, a decline that highlights how rough his advanced numbers have become. His usage rate also remains extremely low because he spends most possessions parked off the ball, taking shots only when defenders completely ignore him.

Watching Okoro on the court, it’s obvious he plays with effort and intensity, and he carries a strong reputation in the locker room. Still, the numbers don’t lie.

Bulls unveil City Edition jerseys with Chicago flag at the center

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have something new for fans before winter hits. The 2025-26 City Edition collection lands in stores November 11, and the uniforms make their court debut December 3 when Brooklyn comes to the United Center. This design pulls straight from Chicago’s flag and sets it against black, marrying city pride with a look that feels built for right now.

At 6-1 and atop the Eastern Conference, the Bulls have everyone’s attention again. Fans who follow the team’s odds and lines on sports betting websites have seen Chicago blow past early projections, and the Brooklyn game gives the squad another shot to prove this start holds up. The black-and-blue jerseys arrive just as the Bulls are worth paying attention to again.

Chicago flag gets a makeover

City Edition uniforms exist to capture a team’s hometown spirit, and the Bulls went straight to the source. Chicago’s flag brings four red stars and sky-blue stripes that everyone in the city knows, but the black foundation flips the whole thing. It’s clean, current, and talks to Chicago without leaning on the past. Motorola’s razr line partners with the Bulls again, which ties in a local tech angle and pushes the release past just jerseys. The drop includes hoodies, hats, and other pieces that keep the flag theme running through the whole line. The NBA rolls out City Edition gear across the league, but Chicago’s take stays locked on what separates this city from the rest.

Two-stage rollout builds anticipation

The mid-November retail launch isn’t random timing. It creates two separate moments for the Bulls to command attention. First, fans can buy the gear and wear it through the holidays. Then, three weeks later, the uniforms hit the court when the Nets come to town. That gap gives the organization two chances to generate buzz instead of one. The December 3 game becomes more than just another home date. The Bulls have planned themed nights around these uniforms all season, and the United Center will match its lighting and graphics to the black-and-blue scheme. These games turn into full productions instead of just jersey changes.

Identity over nostalgia

This design marks a clear departure from last season’s approach. Where the previous City Edition paid tribute to the old Chicago Stadium, this one focuses on the present-day city. Black works well on screens and social media, which matters when teams compete for attention online as much as they do on the floor. The blue accents connect to the flag without feeling forced or overly sentimental. It’s a visual language that fits both classic Chicago symbolism and current streetwear trends. The Bulls clearly understand their audience and how to market to them. City Edition drops have evolved from novelty releases into serious revenue opportunities, and the organization is treating this one accordingly.

United Center gets involved

Bulls

The arena itself is part of the presentation. With new Banner Level seating and updated premium sections already in place, the City Edition nights will integrate into those upgrades. Expect coordinated towels, lighting packages, and video board content built around the flag theme. The goal is to make certain home games feel bigger than standard matchups, giving fans reasons to show up early and stay locked in throughout. It’s experiential marketing that turns a basketball game into a Chicago celebration.

Early access matters

The gear goes on sale November 11 through the Bulls’ official channels. Previous City Edition releases moved fast, so waiting means risking missed player options and sold-out sizes. The lifestyle line carries the flag design across multiple products, not just game jerseys. The drop happens right when holiday shopping picks up, and that’s no accident. The Bulls are banking on civic pride and gift-giving season to drive sales. This release blends team loyalty, city identity, and fashion in a package that works whether you’re courtside or just walking around Chicago.

Billy Donovan explains why he isn’t rushing Rookie’s NBA Debut

Billy Donovan Chicago Bulls

Billy Donovan figured Noa Essengue would finally get his chance against the Denver Nuggets. The Bulls coach watched his team grind through a double overtime loss in Utah, board a late flight to the Mile High City, and prepare to face a powerhouse Nuggets group on almost no rest. It felt like the ideal moment for the rookie to step on the floor and log his first meaningful NBA minutes. He didn’t.

Billy Donovan says he talked to the staff before Denver game, and because of double OT in Utah night before he "was open to putting (Noa Essengue) in the game. Says the second unit played so well that "I just decided to go with those guys." Essengue has yet to debut for Bulls.

— Joel Lorenzi (@JoelXLorenzi) November 20, 2025

Essengue is still the only lottery selection at 12th overall who has yet to see any real playing time this season.

Donovan said Essengue plans to rejoin the Windy City Bulls for their Saturday home game.

“He’s got to get physically stronger, and again, I haven’t given him the opportunity. I’m going off the preseason when I saw him out there,” said the Bulls head coach via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun times.

“The pace and speed of the game, being able to guard multiple options with his feet, being able to play when he catches it against closeouts, I think those are going to be growth things that we need to focus on.”

A quick turnaround after Windy City absorbed its first loss of the season in a 156 to 128 matchup with the Iowa Wolves on Friday, where Essengue, on assignment from Chicago, led the scoring effort with 22 points while making more than half of his shots and collecting six rebounds.

— Windy City Bulls (@windycitybulls) November 22, 2025

Facing the Wolves on the second night of a back to back, the Bulls kept the game tight through the opening half, and Essengue’s 13 point surge in the second period helped trim the deficit to four by halftime.

Essengue benefits from the maturity he gained while playing professionally in the German League, a foundation that helps him stay grounded as he waits for a real opportunity. Donovan talks with him regularly to keep him encouraged through the dry spell, and he believes Essengue has the temperament to stay steady rather than letting the limited minutes wear on him.

“He’s really mature in a lot of ways. He knows this is going to be a process. At 18 years old, whatever his path will be, as long as he continues to keep the mentality where it is right now, he’s a good worker, he pays attention,” Billy Donovan added.

Bulls guard Kevin Huerter ejected after ball hits referee in loss against Heat

Earlier this week, Kevin Huerter delivered a masterful performance for the Chicago Bulls facing the Denver Nuggets. By the end of the week, he grabbed attention again, but this time for the wrong reasons. Huerter was ejected from Chicago’s 143-107 home loss to Miami on Friday night after tapping the ball in frustration over a foul call, sending it off the back of a referee.

On Friday, during the third quarter of a double-digit deficit against the Miami Heat, Kevin Huerter was ejected from the game, per Bulls on CHSN. The Bulls trailed 78-57 with just over eight minutes remaining when Huerter was called for a foul defending Pelle Larsson in midair.

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) November 22, 2025

The ball bounced near the free-throw line, and Huerter tapped it toward NBA referee Che Flores, the league’s first openly non-binary and transgender official, who was signaling the foul near midcourt.

Head coach Billy Donovan reacted angrily as the play was reviewed, and veteran referee Tony Brothers immediately assessed a technical foul on Huerter. Huerter raised both hands in disbelief as he realized he had been removed from the game.

Unsurprisingly, Bulls fans at the United Center and online reacted with outrage, and a loud chorus of boos echoed throughout the arena.

“Does the NBA know that it has a ref problem?” one user wrote.

Another noted that the officiating is spotty not just in the NBA, “And you know what? Go watch (or look at the box) of Northwestern/Virginia. 51 personal fouls. These refs, across all sports, are a fucking disaster. We need to start loudly boycotting sponsors.”

“How can I make this about me? Very easily given ejection” another user added.

One user also took a jab at Tony Brothers, “Brothers need to retire. Huerter has nvr done anything to a ref.”

“I was frustrated at the call, but again, I apologize if that was too much. Obviously it was,” Huerter said during his post-game availability. “I was not meaning to throw the ball at the official.”

While the ejection grabbed headlines, many see it as an overreaction in a frustrating game for Huerter and the Bulls. His tap of the ball was clearly born out of irritation over how the game was going, not intent to disrespect, and his prompt apology reinforced that.

“We played really soft”: Nikola Vucevic, Bulls grind out win over bottom of the barrel Wizards

Saturday had a celebratory feel at United Center as the Bulls paid tribute to six franchise greats during their Ring of Honor Ceremony while also trying to take care of a Washington team near the bottom of the league. The Chicago Bulls escaped with a 121 – 120 finish, the kind of narrow result that is an ugly win but a win nonetheless. Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic did not share that mindset, making it clear that edging out a struggling Washington Wizards squad was far from enough in his view.

He wrapped up the night with 28 points and 12 rebounds, but the numbers did little to soften his mood. Speaking with K. C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network, Vucevic made it clear he was frustrated, a reaction noted by Steph Noh of Sporting News.

“We didn’t do anything we talked about. We played really soft, it was really bad,” said the Bulls big man. “Obviously, we are happy we won, but we can’t keep doing this; it’s not sustainable. We have to be better.”

Vucevic did not hold back when he talked about the team’s effort, describing the first three quarters as soft before noting how the group finally woke up in the fourth and outscored Washington 29 to 22.

The interview itself had a brief interruption when Matas Buzelis and Jalen Smith drifted into the frame, both trying to annoy Vucevic. Smith kept joking around behind him until Vucevic told him to cut it out, then he turned his attention back to the conversation.

The Bulls spent most of the night playing from behind and only grabbed control once the fourth quarter arrived. The group looked worn down overall, with injuries thinning the rotation and the grind of five games in seven days clearly taking a toll.

Bulls coming up big in second halves

Chicago has leaned on big second halves more than once this season to pull games out of trouble. Their most dramatic example came on November 4, when the Bulls stormed back from twenty four points down against the Philadelphia 76ers. Vucevic capped that push by knocking down a three that gave Chicago its first lead with a little more than three seconds left, and they held on for a 113 – 111 finish.

The same script played out last Monday against the Denver Nuggets, when the Bulls seized control after the break and pushed ahead by winning the third quarter 40 to 29 before closing out a tight 130 to 127 win.

The Bulls have wrapped up a grueling stretch of five games in seven days, coming away with three wins and two losses to push their record to 9-7. On Monday, they will hit the road to face the New Orleans Pelicans.

“He’s the real thing”: Bulls’ rising star Josh Giddey gains nod from three-time NBA champion

NBA: New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls

Luc Longley, a three-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls, provides a measured take on rising star Josh Giddey. Still active in the sport as part-owner of Australia’s Sydney Kings and Flames, Longley offers perspective on Giddey’s growth and impact in a highly competitive environment.

“It’s a little bit of a weird deja vu thing, I guess, seeing him in those uniforms, in that arena, doing what he does,” remarked the three-time NBA champion via The Guardian.

Even though he does not watch every Bulls game, Longley follows Giddey’s journey closely since the young guard joined Chicago. Watching Giddey suit up in the Bulls’ iconic red and black sparks memories of Longley’s own career alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

The bond goes further back, reaching to Longley’s junior representative days in the late 1980s, when he shared the court with Giddey’s father, Warwick.

“It’s a little bit surreal for me. Especially with my connection to his old man,” Longley continued.

Giddey’s play this season has been impressive, flirting with a 20-point triple-double while helping the Bulls reach a 9-7 record. Longley highlights the “blue collar” spirit of Chicago fans and recognizes the pressure on Giddey in a city still yearning for another championship since the team’s glory days.

“He’s tough as nails, he’s not really a chest pounder, but he lets his actions do the talking,” he added.

Longley left Chicago 27 years ago, the same stretch the city has gone without adding to its six NBA titles. “The lean years have stung the Bulls, stung the fans, because going from the penthouse to the outhouse is worse than the other way around.”

The elder Australian stops short of comparing Giddey directly to Jordan, noting their different backgrounds and playing styles, but he praises Giddey’s expanding offensive game. He sees room for Giddey to sharpen his scoring and shooting, which could boost his influence on the team.

“The reality is his offensive game has to be strong, he has to shoot the ball and be attacking.”

Coach Billy Donovan’s decision to put Giddey on crucial inbounds plays in game-deciding moments shows the faith the Bulls have in him. As the season moves forward, Giddey’s play will be key not just for his growth but also for the Bulls chances as they aim to reassert themselves in the playoff picture.

“I believe in his talent. I believe in his intensity and I think his basketball intentions are pure. I really think he’s the real thing, and I can’t wait to sit in the stands and watch him do it. That would really join the dots for me,” Longley concluded.

NBA insider wants Chicago Bulls to swap young star for Anthony Davis

USATSI_27658542_168402676_lowres-1200x600.jpg

The Chicago Bulls may no longer be atop the Eastern Conference like they briefly were, but they are in the thick of it. They currently sit as the top play-in seed, but they’re over .500 and just 2.5 games back of the number two seed. They could easily make a run and get a high seed in the East, thereby passing over the play-in this time. To further complement their rise, one insider pitched a trade idea for Anthony Davis (not the first one, either), but it’s going to cost a beloved young player.

More News: “We played really soft”: Nikola Vucevic, Bulls grind out win over bottom of the barrel Wizards

More News: Chicago Bulls mega trade proposal nets Anthony Davis at high cost

The Chicago Bulls are in a good spot to pull off a blockbuster. They have a decent amount of draft picks, a few expiring contracts, and some good players they could deal. Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes believes they make a lot of sense for an easy, clean Anthony Davis deal, and he’s not the only one. So many mock trades have pitched a Davis-Chicago partnership.

The Bulls would get Davis, while the Dallas Mavericks would come away with Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, Kevin Huerter, a 2028 first-round pick (top-four protected), and a 2029 first-round swap. It would be costly, and it would give the Mavericks a young fan favorite in White, but it would bring back a possible future Hall of Famer.

Why would Chicago do this? Hughes wrote, “If Davis is healthy, he would give the fast-paced Bulls a lob threat and defensive anchor they don’t currently possess—all while theoretically making life easier for younger cornerstones Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis by providing back-line support and interior offensive punch.” The Bulls have not had a good defense, but Davis would dramatically improve that.

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White

Furthermore, the Bulls probably only see White as a loss here, so it’s not as if the Bulls are parting with a ton of important capital. The picks are valuable, but White is the centerpiece, with Huerter and Vucevic being trade fodder that Chicago might offload in the future anyway. Plus, White may be expendable anyway. “An offense designed to feature Giddey and Buzelis on the perimeter needs less creation and more of the defense, rebounding and interior scoring Davis provides,” Hughes added.

The Bulls have the opportunity, in Hughes’ eyes, to move on from two expendable assets, a future first-round pick, and Coby White to bring in Anthony Davis, which may not be an exorbitant price after all.

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan makes embarrassing admission on Derik Queen

Chicago Bulls Head Coach Billy Donovan looks on against the New Orleans Pelicans

The Chicago Bulls had a chance to see what could have been when the team was defeated 143-130 by the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.

More News: Bulls’ Josh Giddey sends urgent warning to team

Rookie center Derik Queen scored eight points, added five rebounds, one block, and one assist for the Pelicans in front of 16,690 fans at Smoothie King Center. The Bulls dropped to 9-8 with the loss, and New Orleans earned just its third win of the season.

Derik Queen was on the radar

More News: Bulls’ Billy Donovan admits team has been ‘disconnected’

Before the game, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan suggested the team was close to selecting Queen in this year’s draft.

“(Queen) was one of the guys the front office asked me to watch,” Donovan said, via Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic. “I spent time with him on his visit (to Chicago). His head coach at Maryland, Kevin Willard and I are very, very close…. Certainly (Willard) was all aboard there. There was probably five or six guys they wanted me to watch film on.

“And I had talked to Kevin, and Kevin thought really, really IQ, all those things.”

The Chicago Bulls panicked

Unfortunately, the Bulls appeared to panic when they were on the clock… and went with the same position they drafted a year earlier in Matas Buzelis instead of finding a replacement for an aging Nikola Vucevic.

“When the draft actually came, there’s things that happened in that moment, you’ve got five minutes to make a pick,” Donovan said without irony. “I think that they were looking at Noa as an opportunity long term. ‘This guy fits the way we really would like to play.’ I did not get from the front office, or even the scouts, like ‘he’s not a fit.’

“I think they felt like (Derik) was a very, very good player… But i think the way we were playing, I think they maybe thought that Noa, maybe from an upside standpoint, with another athletic wing, long defender, is maybe something we
need defensively.”

So if the Bulls had six minutes, they would have taken Queen?

Queen appears to be a steal for New Orleans. He came into Monday night averaging 12.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.

Essengue went 0-of-2 shooting but added a steal in his two minutes on the court Monday night. He has yet to score a point, add a rebound, or make an assist in six minutes played this season over a span of two games.

Billy Donovan’s Bulls stumble as Josh Giddey struggles against the Pelicans

Josh Giddey shouldered extra offensive responsibility with Nikola Vucevic sidelined, but neither he nor the Chicago Bulls could deliver. Chicago suffered a disappointing 143-130 loss to the struggling New Orleans Pelicans, who improved to 2-15 and snapped a nine-game losing streak on Tuesday AEDT.

The Australian, entered the game averaging 20.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 9.7 assists, struggled to run the offense efficiently and turned the ball over multiple times. With starting center Nikola Vucevic out with a knee injury, the Bulls lacked presence in the paint. Josh Giddey took 12 shots and scored 21 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists, but he also coughed up the ball five times and finished with a minus-13 plus-minus in his 35 minutes on the court.

“You’re just not gonna go on the road, give up 143 points and beat anybody,” Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said during his post-game interview.

Bulls broadcast analyst Stacey King called Chicago’s recent defensive play “horrendous” after the team allowed 143 points to the Pelicans, pointing out that the Bulls had also given up 143 points to Miami just days earlier.

After opening the season 5-0, the Bulls have dropped eight of their last 12 games, slipping to ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

The impact of Vucevic’s absence was glaring in New Orleans. Without a reliable post presence, the Bulls struggled to contain their opponents, allowing the Pelicans to surpass 100 points with more than three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Bulls staged a late rally, led by Ayo Dosunmu’s 28 points and Coby White’s 24. Jalen Smith contributed 13 points, while Tre Jones added a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists off the bench. The Bulls connected on 20 of 50 three-point attempts but could not overcome New Orleans’ balanced scoring effort.

Zion Williamson led the way for the New Orleans Pelicans with a season-high 29 points, while Saddiq Bey added 20 points and 14 rebounds, including two late three-pointers that helped seal the win in the final minutes.

The victory ended a nine-game losing streak and marked the first under interim coach James Borrego, who stepped in after Willie Green was fired. New Orleans got balanced scoring, with eight players reaching double figures, including Trey Murphy with 20 points and Jose Alvarado with 16, while Yves Missi recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Josh Giddey eclipses some NBA greats as Bulls pull off nail-biter

Josh Giddey moved past several legendary NBA figures on Sunday by recording his 22nd career triple-double in a hard-fought win over the struggling Washington Wizards. Washington held the lead for most of the night and seemed poised for only their second win of the season, but Giddey and the Bulls rallied from a sixteen-point deficit to pull out a 121 – 120 victory.

The defeat pushed Washington to 1-15 on the season, while the Bulls climbed to 9-7, rebounding from a 143 – 107 blowout loss to the Miami Heat on Saturday. Giddey was an assist shy of a triple-double in that game and then dominated the stat sheet on Sunday, delivering 18 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and three steals.

With the performance, Giddey climbed to 23rd on the NBA’s all-time triple-double list, overtaking legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Kyle Lowry, Michael Ray Richardson, and Chris Webber along the way.

The 23-year-old has already recorded four triple-doubles in 13 games this season and is flirting with a season-long triple-double average, putting up 20.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 9.6 assists per game.

Nikola Vucevic paced the Bulls with 28 points and 12 rebounds, building on a strong start to the season that has given Chicago plenty to consider, especially with his name often linked to trade speculation.

This Bulls team now looks like a legitimate contender in the hobbled Eastern Conference, and with Vucevic playing at a high level on both ends of the floor, it could be difficult to justify trading him without a truly significant offer.

Chicago started strong, grabbing a slim 41-40 lead after the opening quarter, but the Wizards fought back in the second. Washington outpaced Chicago 29-24 to take a 70-64 lead at halftime, setting up an intense second-half showdown.

The third quarter saw both teams exchanging baskets in a back-and-forth battle, each scoring 28 points, leaving the Bulls trailing heading into the final period. Chicago turned the tide in the fourth, outscoring Washington 29-22 and hitting key plays down the stretch to secure the slim victory.

The Wizards had an opportunity to snatch the win late when Coby White missed a long three, but tight pressure from Tre Jones forced a turnover, keeping Chicago in control.

Chicago Bulls receive major lift as Zach Collins readies comeback

After a surprisingly strong start, the Chicago Bulls have hit a rough patch of inconsistency. The team received encouraging news recently, as Zach Collins could make his season debut next week. Collins has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on October 17 to repair a non-displaced fracture in his left wrist, but he may finally participate in contact practices this week, according to The Athletic’s Joel Lorenzi.

“Billy Donovan says Zach Collins will try to get in contact practices this week, and that his target range to return to play is that home stretch after this post-Thanksgiving road trip, which features games vs Brooklyn, Indiana and Golden State,” the NBA insider wrote on a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Chicago kicked off a four-game road trip in New Orleans following three wins in their previous four outings. Defensively, they faltered badly in a 143-130 defeat to the Pelicans, marking the third time in six games they’ve surrendered at least 143 points.

The Bulls were hampered by multiple injuries in their loss to the Pelicans. Nikola Vucevic missed the game with a knee issue, while Kevin Huerter (pelvis), Dalen Terry (calf), and Isaac Okoro (back) also sat out. All four are expected to return when Chicago faces Charlotte on Friday.

Chicago likely held practice on Wednesday, but it’s unclear whether Zach Collins took part fully.

Even if he missed Wednesday’s session, Collins has time to prepare, as the team doesn’t play again until Friday. Coach Billy Donovan expects him to return in uniform when the Bulls begin a four-game home stretch next Wednesday against the Nets, followed by matchups with the Pacers on December 5, the Warriors on December 7, and the Cavaliers on December 17.

Collins’ return is urgently needed. The Bulls sit eighth in the Eastern Conference at 9-8, dropping seven of their last 10 games. They have been outscored by nearly three points per contest and rank in the league’s lower half in both offensive rating at 114.4 and defensive rating at 117.5.

The Bulls rank among the league’s top-10 shooting teams, yet they convert just 59 percent of shots at the rim, the third-worst mark in the NBA.

Collins may not be a scoring wizard, but he brings polished post skills and soft finishing around the basket. He excels as a screener and floor spacer, capable of stretching the defense when needed. At 28, Collins is also a strong rebounder and rim protector, qualities the Bulls desperately need as they sit in the league’s bottom third in offensive rebounding and are being outrebounded by roughly one board per game.

Bill Simmons’ mock trade gives the Bulls an explosive wing in three-way deal

The Chicago Bulls could play a key role if a three-way trade involving the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors comes to fruition.

Rumors have swirled about potential moves, including the possibility of Anthony Davis being traded, but the Bulls’ involvement could focus on strengthening their roster in other ways. NBA analyst Bill Simmons suggested a scenario in which such a trade could provide additional support for Cooper Flagg, giving Chicago a chance to bolster their lineup ahead of the trade deadline. The Bulls will need to weigh how any incoming pieces fit their current rotation and long-term development plans.

“They (Mavericks) finally at least realized that Cooper Flagg, how to try to grow his career instead of ruin it,” Simmons remarked in his podcast. “But what if it was (Jonathan) Kuminga to Chicago, Coby White to Dallas, and then (Daniel) Gafford and an expiring to Golden State. Does anyone have to throw a pick into that trade?

Daniel Gafford has emerged as a potential trade candidate for the Dallas Mavericks, but the situation is complicated. With Dereck Lively II facing a possible extended absence, the Mavs may hesitate to move Gafford, as losing both big men could leave the team thin in the frontcourt.

Should the Bulls move on from Coby White?

“The moment White came back to Chicago, it kinda screwed them up. I’m not positive they need him. I actually think they need another wing and more explosiveness. Coby White’s gonna be free agent. Do you wanna pay Coby White if you’re Chicago when you just paid (Josh) Giddey? There’s some sort of ring around the Rosie trade with that, but I like the idea of Coby White in Dallas who desperately needs somebody like him,” Simmons continued.

If Dallas moves Gafford, Simmons’ proposed three-way trade could work strategically. The Mavericks need backcourt support, and Coby White would complement Cooper Flagg nicely. At just 25, White offers both immediate contributions and long-term upside, giving Dallas a chance to build around Flagg and White for the future.

The Bulls could benefit from adding depth on the wing, making Jonathan Kuminga a plausible target. Meanwhile, Golden State would gain from acquiring a capable center like Daniel Gafford.

Whether it is Coby White or another guard, the Mavericks need to seriously consider strengthening their backcourt.

Chicago Bulls plotting for Western Conference All-Star

Feb 3, 2024; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (10) drives to the basket against Chicago Bulls center Andre Drummond (3) during the second half at United Center. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

The Chicago Bulls are reportedly exploring ways to strengthen their center position as trade rumors swirl around the NBA well ahead of the February deadline. Sources indicate that Sacramento Kings standout Domantas Sabonis and Dallas Mavericks center Anthony Davis are among the players the team is monitoring.

Sources suggest that Bulls general manager Arturas Karnisovas, who hails from Lithuania, may target Domantas Sabonis in a trade this season, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. There is also speculation that the team could pursue Anthony Davis to bring him back to Chicago. These possibilities are partly enabled by Nikola Vucevic’s trade-friendly contract.

“I’ve heard from more than a few rival executives who have noted Vucevic’s trade-friendly contract, plus the other expiring deals on Chicago’s books, which has led them to wonder aloud about the Bulls’ Lithuanian GM Arturas Karnisovas pursuing Sabonis. Similar curiosity about the Bulls as a potential suitor to try to bring Davis back to his native Windy City is also circulating,” Fischer wrote.

Will the Bulls pull the trigger on Domantas Sabonis?

Sabonis remains under a four-year, $186,016,000 contract with the Kings, collecting $46,504,000 this season. Beyond trade speculation, the Kings face a major setback with their offensive leader sidelined by a partial meniscus tear in his left knee. The team will reevaluate him in three to four weeks, leaving them without their central playmaker during a critical stretch when stability is essential.

The 29-year-old Lithuanian is a force on offense and the boards, elevating teammates with his passing, screens, and inside scoring. However, his defense limits his overall value. He lacks rim protection and struggles against fast, athletic penetrators. In today’s positionless NBA, centers cover extensive defensive territory, this weakness can be a major drawback.

On offense, teams regularly leave Sabonis open beyond the arc because he is a limited three-point threat, connecting on just 20% this season. While he can make midrange attempts, he rarely shoots them with enough consistency to pull defenders away.

For the Chicago Bulls, adding a player like Domantas Sabonis could be transformative. If general manager Arturas Karnisovas can navigate the trade market effectively, Sabonis could become a cornerstone in Chicago’s plans.

The 12th pick in the draft scored 11 points alone in the fourth quarter to help the Bulls pull to within six points in the final minute. He showcased his overall skill set, from his several finishes in transition to his 3-point shooting early in the contest.

Essengue has made two brief appearances with Chicago, totaling six minutes in their last two outings this week. Bulls coach Billy Donovan has used a 9-10 man rotation for much of the early going, leaving Essengue and others out of the fold.

The French teenager played his third game with Windy City on Wednesday, averaging 25.7 points, eight rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals on 50% shooting from the field. He has scored at least 20 points in each appearance, including a 28-point debut on Nov. 11.

Donovan said previously that Essengue would likely spend extensive time with Windy City to log minutes against high-level competition. The team has set forth a detailed development plan for Essengue and is looking to maximize his rookie campaign on the court.

Health returns to the Chicago Bulls as schedule softens

The Chicago Bulls have lost steam after a strong start to the season. Following a 6-1 opening, they’ve gone 3-8 over their last 11 contests. Despite pulling off a few surprise victories, including one over the Denver Nuggets, they have also dropped games to struggling teams such as the injury-hit Detroit Pistons, the Utah Jazz, and the two-win New Orleans Pelicans.

Beyond the weaker teams, the Bulls have faced a punishing schedule. They’ve squared off twice against Eastern Conference-leading Pistons, twice against the New York Knicks, and battled the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat.

The Bulls’ path looks easier over the next five games, with their opponents combining for just 22-68. Chicago will take on the Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers twice, Orlando Magic, and Brooklyn Nets, having already defeated the Magic, the only team above .500.

During a four-day break, the Bulls will see several key players return from injury. In their last game against the Pelicans, Chicago was missing Zach Collins, Kevin Huerter, Isaac Okoro, Nikola Vucevic, and Dalen Terry. The absence of both big men, Collins and Vucevic, hurt most, as the Bulls allowed 78 points in the paint while starting 6-foot-7 Patrick Williams at center.

As the Bulls prepare to face the Hornets, Zach Collins remains the only player listed as unavailable. Two weeks ago, coach Billy Donovan indicated Collins could return around Thanksgiving. The 6-foot-10 forward has been without his wrist splint for most of the month and is expected to rejoin the lineup once his conditioning and comfort are fully restored.

Apart from Collins, Isaac Okoro is doubtful for the Hornets game, making his participation uncertain. Kevin Huerter, Dalen Terry, Nikola Vucevic, and Patrick Williams are all questionable but likely to suit up if no issues arise.

Bulls are in urgent need of a change of pace, and a softer schedule along with the return of key players from injury could provide it. After starting the season with a surprisingly strong defense, the team has slipped back into the same struggles as last year. Over their last 10 games, Chicago sits 25th in defensive rating, 28th in forced turnovers, and last in points allowed in the paint per game.

Getting the full roster healthy will give a better sense of whether Chicago’s offense is genuinely elite or simply average.

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan suggests team is mentally weak

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan reacts to a call during the fourth quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

Cracks are starting to show in a few significant areas for the Chicago Bulls.

On Friday night, the Bulls dropped their third game in four tries in a 123-116 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in front of 19,453 fans at the Spectrum Center. Chicago was without forward Isaac Okoro, and he was a big miss for the defense.

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, the Bulls have given up 120 or points in 11 straight games, the first such streak in 35 years.

The Bulls gave up 143 points in a loss to the Miami Heat on Nov. 21 and 143 again in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. Frustrating losses to the Pelicans and Hornets have dropped Chicago to 9-9.

On Friday, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan suggested the defenses woes were a mental problem, with players not feeling good.

“It’s a mentality,” Donovan said via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “When you get into the season, you’re always fighting human nature. Human nature tells you you’re sore or you’re tired. There are a lot of physical things you have to do that are very challenging. I think we’ve been pretty clear on those things.

“There’s a level of consistency that has to be a lot better in those areas. They just got to do it, and they’ve got to do it when they don’t feel good.

Donovan thinks the Bulls should be able to overcome those obstacles.

“When you get into 20, 30 games, most of these guys don’t feel good. I don’t know any guy that’s 100 percent. It’s battling human nature all the time,” Donovan said. “How you do with internal talk, how you’re getting prepared, focusing on the things that you have control over? A lot of it is the controllable stuff.”

The Bulls aren’t controlling it, and they’re blowing games they should win.

Chicago has another winnable game upcoming when they travel to play the 3-16 Indiana Pacers on Saturday.
