Bulls’ NBA trade deadline plans are already being sabotaged

The Chicago Bulls got off to a 5-0 start this season, but clearly, it was a mirage. Since then, they have gone just 5-14 and are back in NBA purgatory: not good enough to make a playoff run, but also not bad enough to land a top pick in the NBA Draft.

As such, the Bulls are widely expected to sell off some pieces between now and the February trade deadline, and guard Coby White appears to be their chief trade chip.

But unfortunately for Chicago, White’s trade value already appears to be falling off a cliff.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, for example, have expressed interest in White, but because the 25-year-old is headed toward free agency this summer, his price point has dipped “precipitously,” per Sam Amick of The Athletic.

It’s not just White’s contract that is an issue, either.

White had a breakout campaign last year, averaging 20.4 points per game while posting a true-shooting percentage of 60.1 percent. This season, however, has been a different story for the former first-round pick.

Through mid-December, White is registering a career-high 21.9 points a night, but on miserable 42.7/29.8/80.0 shooting splits in eight games (he missed considerable time due to a calf injury) White’s significant dip in three-point percentage is very alarming, and while he is taking 8.1 free throws per game, his conversion rate at the charity stripe has also fallen by over 10 percent.

What exactly is going on? Is White feeling the immense pressure of a contract year? Were his last couple of seasons of strong play just a fluke?

Couldn’t be lower​

Whatever the case may be, White’s trade value couldn’t possibly be any lower at the moment. Teams are never eager to surrender a pool of assets for an impending free agent. Throw in White’s declining efficiency on top of that, and it’s a perfect storm of bad news for the Bulls.

Is there a chance Chicago ends up re-signing White in free agency? Possibly, but he is due to earn quite a hefty pay day, and if the Bulls do retain him, it could end up hurting them in the long run.

Expect Chicago to aggressively shop White over the next couple of months, but whether or not it is actually able to get a decent return is another story.

Chicago Bulls target Warriors’ young two-way forward

Despite a solid start to the season, the Chicago Bulls have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games and may seek a significant move before the trade deadline.

NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Bulls could be in the mix to acquire Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga.

“There has been no evidence to date to suggest that the Bulls plan to act upon persistent speculation that they harbor trade interest in Mavericks big man (and Chicago native) Anthony Davis,” Stein wrote in his article.

“Yet I was advised this week that Chicago should continue to be classified as a team to watch when it comes to Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga. The Warriors are increasingly expected to trade Kuminga between Jan. 15 — who is not trade-eligible this season until that date — and the Feb. 5 trade deadline.”

The 23-year-old entered the summer as a restricted free agent and only came back to the Warriors after prolonged talks. This isn’t the first time the Bulls have been connected to Kuminga. They reportedly targeted the Goma native in the offseason and could re-emerge as a potential suitor as the trade deadline approaches.

“And Chicago has certainly registered trade interest in Kuminga in the past, bringing up the 23-year-old in negotiations with Golden State on trades that never came to fruition in which the Warriors were engaged in talks of varying degrees of seriousness featuring Alex Caruso, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vučević. The Bulls, meanwhile, continue to field trade interest in guard Coby White,” the NBA insider continued.

The Warriors wing’s value took another hit this week when he was marked as a healthy DNP-CD in Golden State’s blowout victory, notably on the road in Chicago. He didn’t see any minutes, even in garbage time, suggesting that head coach Steve Kerr no longer considers him part of the rotation.

Kuminga, still only 23, brings the qualities the Bulls are missing. He combines explosive athleticism with two-way potential at the forward position, has room for long-term development, and carries a contract that works for both a short-term retool and a longer rebuild.

Through 17 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting around 44 percent from the field. It’s still unclear whether the Warriors will trade him or if the Bulls will make a strong push to acquire him.

White has made his feelings known about how he wants to end the season, but it will be up to the team’s front office. Let’s take a deeper dive into what he said and what the team should do.

Coby White doesn’t want to be traded away this season​

K.C. Johnson, a Chicago Bulls insider for the Chicago Sports Network, shared what White said about his status with the team this season. He explained how he wants to stay with the team, but he understands the team will do what is best for them.

“I love being here,” White said. “I love being on this team. But I understand it’s a business and it’s different going into (unrestricted free agency). They have to do what they think is best for the organization. It’s out of my control.”

White is currently on the final year of his three-year, $36 million contract and has a $12.8 million cap hit. However, with the season more than a quarter over, that cap hit will not be as hefty for a team trading for him. White has shown when healthy, he is still a quality player.

The answer to this really depends on the value they see in White. According to Spotrac, the Bulls are projected to have the sixth-most cap space this offseason at $35.0 million.

There are some impactful players who should be available, and it seems White is not interested in signing an extension during the season. The Bulls need to do what he said for them to do: do what is best for the organization.

With a max slot available this offseason and this year going nowhere, get a draft pick and/or a young player for White as soon as possible.

Trading away White also allows the young core to develop. Noa Essengue, Matas Buzelis, Josh Giddey, and Patrick Williams are all under 25 years old and have multiple years remaining on their contract.

The Chicago Bulls should focus on a year or two down the line, which is without White being on the roster.

The Chicago Bulls are in a position where they need to figure out their direction as a team. It appears that they are not good enough to be a playoff team. However, they do not want to just tank the season away and pile up losses on purpose. That makes the present very difficult to navigate, but they need to do something. The team needs to do something as they sit with a 10-14 record and are looking at four consecutive losing seasons. There is one player they should be shopping for right now in order to improve the team for the long haul.

Guard Coby White is a player the Chicago Bulls should be selling right now before the season gets more drastic. He has shown to be an impactful player when on the court this season, but the Bulls are not in a position where they should keep him. White is currently on the final season of a three-year, $36 million deal, so he could be a rental for a team with championship aspirations. That is not the 2025-26 Chicago Bulls, so getting pieces for the future, whether draft picks or young players, should be the key move for Bulls executive vice president of operations Arturas Karnisovas.

He has preached the idea of “competition integrity” for years, but looking where the team is right now, this is the only move that makes sense. White is averaging 21.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in his eight games this season, so he can improve on that while getting healthy.

What teams would be interested in trading for Coby White?​

There are going to be a few teams that are interested in a guard who can handle the basketball and drive it up the court. One team is the Minnesota Timberwolves, who would get backcourt help for Anthony Edwards while transitioning Mike Conley to the bench when he is healthy. The deal may include a player like Donte DiVincenzo, but White fits the T-Wolves’ needs better this season. Minnesota is in a win-now mode and getting White could put them in a better position.

Get a draft pick, or DiVincenzo in the deal, and the Chicago Bulls should immediately send the agreement to the league offices. There are other teams like the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and Milwaukee Bucks who need a player like Coby White. Do not wait until February’s trade deadline to rip the band-aid off for this season.

Chicago Bulls are interested in trading for this NBA Champion

The Chicago Bulls may need to make a move after snapping their seven-game losing streak to improve to 10-14. While we have more than a quarter of the season in the books, the roster has shown inconsistencies that leave some room for improvement. The deadline for players who signed this offseason to be traded is approaching, so there will be more names involved in trade discussions. Let’s take a closer look at one player who makes sense for the Chicago Bulls and brings a Larry O’Brien Trophy with him.

The Chicago Bulls are showing interest in Jonathan Kuminga​

Mark Stein wrote on his Substack, The Stein Line, that the Chicago Bulls are one of the teams that have shown interest in forward Jonathan Kuminga from the Golden State Warriors. Kuminga is not eligible to be traded until January 15th after signing a two-year, $48.5 million contract with the Warriors this offseason as a restricted free agent. However, the free agency period was rough as it took a long time until the two sides agreed to the deal.

Kuminga started the season as a starter, but coach Steve Kerr has had him fall out of the rotation. Instead, players like Gui Santos and Will Richard have been getting minutes. The two teams have shown interest in making a deal with Kuminga as the centerpiece before, so there is no worry this is just trade speculation for no reason. Kuminga’s name will generate interest ahead of this year’s NBA Trade Deadline on February 5th. He has struggled to see the court since winning the NBA Championship in his rookie season. In 17 games (13 starts) this season, he is averaging 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. His shooting numbers are also below his career averages as he is posting a 43.8/32.0/74.1 shooting split over 25.6 minutes per game.

It will be intriguing to see if the Chicago Bulls could pull a deal off for Kuminga, as their frontcourt could use a player of his status. If they are able to move Nikola Vucevic in this deal as well, this could really give the team an idea of a young core to build around in the Eastern Conference. The future of the Bulls could look a lot clearer with this trade.

Per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the 15-9 Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to nab point guard Coby White. And they want a deal done sooner rather than later.

“According to a source, Coby White has been inquired about, and time is of the essence in the Bulls making a decision,” Cowley wrote.

“The source said that Minnesota is not looking to wait until February and the trade deadline to get a deal done, looking to fix the primary ball-handling situation that’s been an issue all season long for them.”

The calls for White comes amid reported tension in the Bulls locker room. White has been trying to ease tensions amid the losing streak, but right now, the battered and injured group isn’t coming together.

Per Cowley, the hold up in trade discussions is the desire of executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas to field a competitive roster instead of openly tanking. Cowley thinks the Bulls might be more intrigued if they got a player back in return.

Chicago isn’t going anywhere with this team. Frankly, the roster appears to be in disrepair.

The Bulls should offload White and get draft picks in return. But that’s not AK’s way.

Nikola Vucevic confronts frustrations as Bulls navigate tough season

Nikola Vucevic has found himself under intense scrutiny this season. Entering the final year of his contract with the Chicago Bulls, he has been surrounded by constant trade speculation. According to Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune, the pressure is taking its toll. The team is struggling, Vucevic’s defensive impact has been limited, and the nonstop trade chatter has left him drained.

Despite everything, Vucevic is questioning why he is still in Chicago.

“It’s not always easy, to be honest with you, when the team is struggling, when you are struggling, when things are not going your way,” remarked the Bulls big man. “It’s happened a couple times now and sometimes it’s hard. Those questions do creep into your mind and you think about it and you get caught into it, especially when things are not going well. On Sunday, the Bulls dropped a 114-104 contest to the New Orleans Pelicans, with Vucevic recording 12 points and eight rebounds. This season, he has been vocal about the team’s struggles, offering criticism even in games the Bulls managed to win.

“I’m not going to sit here and be like, ‘Nah, it’s not happened to me.’ It has. You get frustrated and you shut down. But you try to regroup and find a way to stay locked in because we all have a part in this,” Vucevic continued.

The Bulls brought Vucevic to Chicago in 2021 via a trade with the Orlando Magic, and two years later, he signed a three-year, $60 million extension with the team. Now 35, Vucevic has averaged 18.2 points per game over his six seasons in Chicago, while this year he is posting 15.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest.

However, his defense has been a clear weakness, something that has not escaped the notice of head coach Billy Donovan.

Chicago Bulls add former NBA Champion in this trade proposal

The Chicago Bulls are continuing to look for ways to improve their roster. Now that players who signed contracts this offseason are officially eligible to be traded, more possibilities have emerged. Let’s take a closer look into one hypothetical trade proposal between the Bulls and the Brooklyn Nets that would send some shockwaves throughout the league.

The Chicago Bulls add a former NBA Champion in a trade proposal​

Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley wrote an article discussing one trade that each NBA team should make. The trade proposal he suggests is the Bulls adding Michael Porter Jr from the Nets in exchange for Patrick Williams, Zach Collins, and a 2026 first-round pick (top-7 protected).

“The Bulls feel perpetually short-sighted enough to pay something of a premium for Porter, and the Nets should jump on this kind of offer, since there’s a decent chance that pick falls somewhere near the mid-point of the lottery in a loaded draft. This would be a salary dump of Williams-Collins’ expiring $18.1 million contract would help make the money work-but you could see why Brooklyn might have some level of interest in a 24-year-old former No. 4 pick with defensive versatility and a 39.5 career three-point percentage.”

This trade feels like a lot on paper, but the top-7 protected first-round pick would likely not happen in the upcoming draft as they would win more games.

Does this trade make sense for the Chicago Bulls to accept?​

This seems like a more likely trade than the other trade the Bulls are involved with in this article. The Bulls seemingly prioritize play-in appearances rather than rebuilding/retooling their roster and this trade gets them closer to that. Patrick Williams and Zach Collins are two rotational pieces, but the draft pick is what the Nets are going to be intrigued with. This makes sense if the team views this as a chance to succeed, as they also own the Portland Trail Blazers’ 2026 first-round (top-14 protected). However, Portland is at a similar spot in the standings as the Bulls, so this pick likely won’t happen this season.

Either way, adding Michael Porter Jr adds a player averaging 25.6 points on 49.7/39.9/81.3 shooting splits. This gives the team another scoring threat and can play well with an older Nikola Vucevic. Adding the forward upgrade for 1.5 seasons would certainly help the offense step up to an even better position.

Ayo Dosunmu fights through thumb injuries as Bulls search for spark

Injuries have continued to pile up for the Chicago Bulls, with Ayo Dosunmu among the latest affected. According to K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Sports Network, Dosunmu revealed Tuesday that he sprained both thumbs and is dealing with a bone bruise on his right thumb. He has been taping both hands, with the left thumb causing him the most trouble.

Even so, Dosunmu remains hopeful he can recover in time for the Bulls’ home matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. He has missed the last two games because of the thumb injuries. Chicago enters the game at 10-14 and is coming off a 114-104 loss to the struggling New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday.

Through 20 games this season, Dosunmu is averaging 15.2 points while logging 27.8 minutes per night. Last year, he finished with averages of 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

A shoulder injury that required surgery ended Dosunmu’s season early. The Bulls drafted him in 2021 out of the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana, and he has spent his entire NBA career in Chicago. A hometown product, Dosunmu continues to represent the city he grew up in while carving out his role with the franchise.

For a team built around a motion-based offense, Dosunmu raises the tempo with his aggressive style. He consistently puts pressure on the rim, welcomes contact, and earns trips to the free-throw line. On the other end, he routinely takes on larger assignments and holds his ground defensively. His versatility adds to his value, as he can slide into the starting lineup when needed or provide steady production off the bench.

The Bulls currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference at 10-15, narrowly trailing the 10th-place Bucks, who are just a game ahead at 11-16. Getting Dosunmu back on the floor could provide a boost on the perimeter, an area where Chicago has struggled, and that improvement on defense may play a role in helping the Bulls close the gap on Milwaukee in the standings.

Coby White could be key piece in Bulls potential rebuild

The Chicago Bulls have lingered in the NBA’s middle ground in recent years. They have fallen short of mounting serious playoff runs, yet they haven’t performed poorly enough to secure a top draft pick.

That spot is one of the most frustrating in the league. The Bulls have been reluctant to fully rebuild, holding off on a complete teardown even when it might benefit the franchise. Chicago has not won a playoff series since the 2014-15 season.

Currently, the Bulls sit 11th in the Eastern Conference standings. Bleacher Report recently suggested a trade scenario that would have Chicago acknowledge the need to rebuild, moving Coby White in exchange for valuable assets.

The full trade proposal would send Coby White to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Rob Dillingham, Joan Beringer, and Leonard Miller, signaling a potential step toward a full rebuild for the Bulls.

You may look at the trade proposal and believe it is a massive overpay for Chicago. However, this trade would guarantee Jones under contract through the 2028-29 season, when he has a $24.1 million player option. This move cannot happen until Jan. 16 due to the contract situation as well. This would significantly improve the defense for the Bulls, who are currently 25th in the league with 122.0 points per game allowed. Losing Kevin Huerter would be difficult as he has been a strong rotational piece, but adding Jones would benefit the team.

Trading away multiple first-round picks could be difficult, but this gives Chicago its all-in approach. They own all their first-round picks currently, so this trade isn’t something that ruins the future either. This is more of believing in Jones to help the defense rather than pushing all the chips into the center of the table.

Jordan could be a bench piece in case of injury. It also helps if the team decides to trade Nikola Vucevic as well and wants to develop a younger center. Jordan has an amazing amount of experience and could be a player-coach for the young big men in Chicago. He can also be a different look to an undersized center in Zach Collins or Jalen Smith.
