Morning Skate: Intermission

gettyimages-2237816703.jpg

Welcome to October, folks!

It certainly feels like it in the Boston area, with chilly morning temperatures, a bit of a breeze, and some playoff baseball in the news.

If you’re a Red Sox fan, you’re in good spirits this morning after their 3-1 win over the Yankees last night.

As someone who has drifted away from baseball fandom in recent years, last night’s game was a good reminder of how tense playoff baseball can be.

Anyways, on to more relevant topics for this audience: the Bruins are free from preseason game action until Thursday night, when they’ll play the Capitals in DC in the penultimate game of the preseason.

They’ll be back on the ice at Warrior Arena for two split-squad practices today, one at 10 AM and one at 11:30 AM.

It seems likely that they’ll be another round of cuts at some point today, as there’s still a bit of roster trimming to do before Opening Night.

For guys on the bubble, Thursday’s game with the Capitals looms large as a last best chance to show something to Marco Sturm and Co.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • The Minnesota Wild got hit with some “good news, bad new,” as they signed pending UFA Kirill Kaprizov to the biggest contract in NHL history, then found out Mats Zuccarello will be out for a couple of months.
  • Former Canadien Max Pacioretty, who will always be intertwined with the Bruins after the injury he suffered at the hands of Zdeno Chara/the stanchion, retired this week and joined the University of Michigan’s coaching staff.
  • Gavin McKenna, the top prospect for next year’s draft, shared why he made the surprising decision to go the NCAA route.

Other than that, enjoy this last few days of relative calm — the regular season starts one week from today.

What else is on tap for the day?

Boston Fleet: Schedule released

gettyimages-2199639220.jpg

The PWHL dropped their schedule yesterday And there will be 30 Fleet games this season, 8 of their home games will be in Lowell while they currently have 4 games scheduled at Agganis Arena, the other 3 home games are TBA, with at least one likely two being located outside of New England for the Takeover Tour.

Once again the schedule makers were not kind to Fleet season ticket holders as only four of the home games with announced locations are on weekend dates, one at Agganis the others at Tsongas, six are on Wednesday, two at Agganis four at Tsongas, and two on Tuesday, one at each location.

It has been a long standing gripe for fans that Boston gets more weeknight home games then any other team and those calls will only be getting louder as of their 15 road games only five are not on a Friday Saturday or Sunday. Those games will also be particularly hard on the Fleet as they include two trips to Vancouver and one to Seattle, the other two are at New York.

Boston has two long road stretches, one after each of the breaks. The league will take a week long break after only two weeks and then a month long break for the Olympics in Italy. After the first break Boston will play four road games. After the Olympics Boston will not be at home for almost a month meaning a nearly two month stretch between home games, both of which are weeknights, during the period in which attention on the sport will be highest.

The Fleet will open the season in Lowell on a Sunday against Montreal, whom they will not see again until March. Montreal will also face the Fleet twice in the final month of the season.

A week later they travel north to Toronto for their first road game. They won’t see the Scepters for two months when they host Toronto and will play them twice more in March.

Next up will be Vancouver at Agganis. Boston plays Vancouver five times, twice on the road and three times as the home team, though two of the meetings do not have a location announced.

The last game before the first break is a rematch of the first Walter Cup Finals as Minnesota will head to Agganis. Minnesota will host Boston a few weeks later after the break before the two don’t meet again until March.

The first game out of the break will be a trip to New Jersey to play New York. Boston will send off their Olympians with a weeknight matinee against the Sirens and then their second game after the Olympics will be a mother trip to New Jersey before these teams will beet in the season finale.

Next up will be a trip to Seattle, where they play three times this season. The Fleet have Seattle three times before the Olympics and then the remaining two will be in March.

Closing out 2025 will be a trip to Ottawa. The Fleet do not have an announced home game against Ottawa until the penultimate game of the season with a second game in Ottawa and an unannounced ‘home’ game.

Game Preview

One more game, and this preseason, which as been nothing but deeply fun, deeply concerning, and deeply long, will at long last be over.

The Caps will be lining up with a mostly NHL roster, as one might expect for having so few spots really open to them. It’s a testament to how that team drafts that the Hershey Bears are usually graduating one or two guys a year; if not into the NHL with Washington, then at least somewhere. Boston sure could use a little bit of that.

Boston meanwhile is still experimenting with lines, but one would imagine they are planning to lineup with something resembling their opening night configuration. This is the last chance for guys like Fraser Minten and Matthew Poitras to perhaps solidify their place on the roster fully, so let’s hope they have enough of that vaunted “juice” to show a mostly-ready Caps what for.

Let’s find out how both sides interact…together!

Bruins make another round of cuts with one preseason game to go

gettyimages-2238413433.jpg

It’s getting close to crunch time for those on the Bruins roster bubble, with just one preseason game left and less than a week until Opening Night in D.C.

The B’s took another step towards finalizing their roster today, releasing a handful of players from NHL training camp.

Players sent directly to the Providence Bruins were Frederic Brunet, Riley Duran, Brett Harrison, and Fabian Lysell.

Players placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Providence were Patrick Brown, Michael Callahan, Georgii Merkulov, Victor Soderstrom, and Riley Tufte.

The waiver players can now be claimed by any NHL team, with the Bruins hoping to sneak them through for future use.

You might be able to make an argument for placing a claim on a player or two here, but it’s also worth pointing out that just about every other NHL team is also busy trying to finalize its Opening Night roster right now.

For the first group, it was always likely that Brown and Harrison would be going to Providence, but it’s awkward timing to send them down just after a two-goal (Harrison) and two-assist (Brown) night.

And then we come to Lysell, who appears to be facing another year of not being ready to make the jump.

He certainly didn’t have an awful training camp, but also didn’t really have the kind of camp required to seize an NHL roster spot either.

He’ll have a shot to earn an NHL recall at some point soon, but this feels like the second or third year in a row where we’ve heard that same story.

The Bruins will wrap up the preseason on Saturday, with a 2 PM game against the New York Rangers at TD Garden.

The P-Bruins have a preseason game on Friday night, then their regular season gets underway on October 12.

Preseason Public Skate: Bruins vs. Rangers

gettyimages-2237022331.jpg

Happy Saturday, folks!

The Bruins will face the New York Rangers in their last preseason tune-up this afternoon, with Opening Night just a few days away.

  • When: Today, 2 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Blueshirt Banter

As you may already know, the Bruins made a series of roster cuts on Friday, sending guys like Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, and Michael Callahan to Providence either or directly or via the waiver wire (provided no one gets claimed).

As a result, the B’s will likely ice a much more NHL-ready roster for this afternoon’s game, both because it’s the last chance to shake off some rust and because many of the fringe players have been released from camp.

While there’s always the chance of an in-season call-up, today represents the best chance for some on-the-bubble guys to earn their spot on the roster in Washington four days from today.

Playing for the Bruins today will be:

  • Goalies: Michael DiPietro, Jeremy Swayman, Joonas Korpisalo
  • Defensemen: Mason Lohrei, Henri Jokiharju, Andrew Peeke, Hampus Lindholm, Jordan Harris, Jonathan Aspirot, Charlie McAvoy, Nikita Zadorov
  • Forwards: Casey Mittelstadt, Matej Blumel, Pavel Zacha, Johnny Beecher, Alex Steeves, Elias Lindholm, Morgan Geekie, Mark Kastelic, Jeffrey Viel, Matthew Poitras, Sean Kuraly, Viktor Arvidsson, Mikey Eyssimont, Tanner Jeannot, David Pastrnak, Marat Khusnutdinov, Fraser Minten

Unlike the Bruins, we will not be demoting any of you fine folks to the Providence Cup of Chowder after today’s game, so you have plenty of time to round yourself into mid-season commenting form.

Morning Skate: Rafters

gettyimages-2059253956.jpg

Welcome to the first week of the regular season, folks!

You’ve officially made it through the offseason, with Opening Night just two days away.

In preparation for the new season, the Bruins made another round of roster cuts on Sunday, preparing their group for Wednesday’s game in Washington.

Perhaps the biggest “on the bubble” news was that Matt Poitras was sent to Providence; it’s not exactly a shock, but Poitras was one of the guys who was in the mix for a roster spot but apparently didn’t quite make it.

Poitras was the only Bruin assigned to Providence outright, as he doesn’t require waivers.

The guys placed on waivers were Jonathan Aspirot, Matej Blumel, Michael DiPietro, and Alex Steeves.

Again, no major surprises, with Blumel in a similar “he might make it” boat as Poitras.

And while he was a long shot to make the NHL roster, Aspirot had himself a decent training camp and will likely be in line for an NHL call-up at some point in the near future.

The B’s will practice this morning ahead of Wednesday’s season-opening game against the Capitals. Also on the books for today: the team’s start-of-season press conference.

Don Sweeney, Charlie Jacobs, and Cam Neely will meet the media at TD Garden this afternoon at 2 PM.

There probably won’t be any breaking news coming out of this availability, but all three will have a chance to say “we expect to make the playoffs,” “this is a competitive group,” etc.

Lastly, the B’s announced some expected (but welcome) news on Monday morning: Zdeno Chara’s number 33 will be retired.

A ceremony celebrating the number retirement will be held on January 15, after which Chara will become the first player to just reach up and place his number in the rafters.

What’s on tap for today?

Potential lines

It remains to be seen how Marco Sturm chooses to set up his group, but as we get into the swing of this season, I thought it might help to have an idea of how the players will line up.

Per the Bruins’ Belle Fraser, this is how the lines and pairings looked on Tuesday:

Geekie-Lindholm-Pastrnak

Zacha-Mittelstadt-Arvidsson

Jeannot-Minten-Eyssimont

Khusnutdinov-Kuraly-Kastelic

Lohrei-McAvoy

Lindholm-Peeke

Zadorov-Jokiharju

Game notes

  • Welcome to a new season, folks! We’re glad to be back for another season here at Stanley Cup of Chowder, and we appreciate you following along. The community has grown a lot over the past few years, and I don’t remember having a more engaged comment section. Let’s all have fun out there.
  • It doesn’t mean much (or anything, really), but these two teams played twice in the preseason. They split the two games, with the Caps winning 5-2 and the Bruins winning 3-1.
  • The Capitals overachieved by a significant margin last season, finishing atop the Eastern Conference. It’s not fair to say their season was a fluke, but it’s reasonable to wonder if they can maintain the same level of play this season. I’m also curious to see how the hangover from the “Gr8 Chase” affects Ovechkin, if at all.
  • This Bruins team looks drastically different from the team we saw on Opening Night last year, so you can be forgiven if it takes you some time to remember who’s who. I won’t hold it against you.
  • I’m not sure what else to say here. It’s a new season. Get your takes ready.

Since a new season is upon us, get ready by giving us your predicted finish for the Bruins this season. We will hold you to it via contractual obligation, and if you’re wrong, you get banished to Habs Eyes on the Prize.

I say the Bruins will be better than most think this year, finishing in a wild card spot in the East.

Have your say!

You made it, folks!

Summer has come and gone, the preseason is done, and now the real games begin.

This seems like a bit of a weird Bruins season to me. On the one hand, they were bad last year and didn’t improve significantly in the offseason.

On the other hand, there’s some exciting young talent, healthy Hampus Lindholm/Charlie McAvoy…oh yeah, and David Pastrnak is still here.

I’m going into the season cautiously optimistic.

Recap: Bruins edge out Blackhawks, 4-3, in OT

gettyimages-2239618513.jpg

gettyimages-2239618513.jpg

After a back-and-forth 60 minutes, the Boston Bruins battled it out to beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-3, in overtime.

Back-to-back wins? The Bruins are already winning the season!

“‘Those are the kinds of wins you need,’” Head Coach Marco Sturm said Zdeno Chara told the coaches after the victory.

Here are the highlights!

First period

Casey Middlestadt went five-hole to open the game after he picked up a loose puck in the paint. 1-0 Bruins.

View Link

Conor Bedard evened things up with a one-timer for Chicago from the left-wing circle. 1-1 game.

View Link

Second period

After a face-off win, Bedard found Louis Crevier at the right point where he sent a wrist shot over Joonas Korpisalo’s glove shoulder. 2-1 Blackhawks.

View Link

Tanner Jeannot picked up the rebound from Mikey Eyssimont shot to tie the game. 2-2 game.

View Link

Third period

On a 5-on-3 power play to start the period, Elias Lindholm collected the puck from 5 skates, which Pavel Zacha intended to pass, and put a shot past Arvid Soderblom from the goal line. 3-2 Bruins.

View Link

Just as the bruins capitalized on the huge power play, it was a tie game again when the Bruins were beat up the ice and down the center lane as Andre Burkovsky beat Korpisalo’s glove in the slot. 3-3 game.

View Link

Overtime

On a 2-on-1 with Morgan Geekie, Fraser Minten threw snap shot on net, beating Soderblom blocker side. Final: Bruins 4-3.

Game notes

We know that the Bruins are a different team, in many ways from last year. And while they are only two games into the season, the team has at least kicked things off with some heart and it’s paid off.

Postgame, Head Coach Marco Sturm said those are the types of wins needed to build what the organization is trying to build with the team this season. “They aren’t always pretty, but you guys got the job done,” he said. Sturm added “mentally it’s a lot,” playing back-to-back games, getting back home on a late flight and starting the process over for Game 2.

Hampus Lindholm only had 4:26 TOI before the Bruins announced in the first intermission that he would not return to the game with a lower body injury. While hopefully nothing, his season-ending injury last year came early November and also lower body.

Down a defenseman, Charlie McAvoy had a whopping 27:26 TOI.

While Game 1 was all about the top line, tonight the Bruins’ had some help from the other lines getting pucks into the back of the net.

The Bruins PK once again shut out their opponent. Two games in and it’s a perfect 8/8 PK.

The Bruins are back at it, and at home, on Saturday when they welcome the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m.

Know your enemy

  • The Sabres opened their 2025-2026 season on Thursday night, losing at home to the New York Rangers, 4-0.
  • I don’t mean to be snarky about it, but they have no point leaders as their team has not recorded a goal on the season. Sorry.
  • It’s also good that the Bills lost to the Patriots in primetime.

Game notes

  • With the third game of the season, the Bruins kick off their divisional slate by hosting fellow Atlantic-dwellers Buffalo. This will be the first of back-to-back Atlantic games for the B’s, who will host Tampa Bay on Monday afternoon.
  • Buffalo’s season got off to a less-than-ideal start on Thursday night, as the Sabres were thoroughly beaten by their in-state rivals, the New York Rangers, 4-0. That game was at home as well, which won’t do much to endear this year’s Sabres to an already-restless fanbase.
  • To make matters funnier (from a Bruins perspective), the Sabres held a rather long, very public “choose this year’s goal song” contest during preseason, only to come out and not score at all in their first game. Good times.
  • For the Bruins, you’re looking to keep the good times rolling here in Game 3 of the season. Games 1 and 2 weren’t without their flaws, but ultimately, the B’s are 2-0. There’s room for improvement, of course, but the results are what they are.
  • No concrete word yet on the status of Hampus Lindholm, who left Thursday’s win with a lower-body injury. The only thing Marco Sturm confirmed is that the issue isn’t related to his fractured kneecap, which is good (I guess). A healthy Lindholm was a reason for optimism heading into this season; if he’s out for a bit, it’s a pretty big blow.

That’s about it. It’s early in the season, game notes are hard to come by.

See ya tonight!

Welcome to Saturday night, folks!

Hopefully you’ve had yourself a decent weekend thus far. We’re in for some rainy weather in New England this weekend, which we kind of need based on recent weather patterns.

Anyways, that’s my meteorology update.

The Bruins are back in action tonight, playing host once again, this time to the Buffalo Sabres.

Buffalo got shut down by Igor Shesterkin on Thursday night, so they’ll undoubtedly be eager to break their dry spell tonight.

For the Bruins…more of the same? A bit of chaos, some good goaltending, David Pastrnak being David Pastrnak. It’s been relatively fun so far, right?

Let’s hope for more of the same tonight.

  • Andrei Vasilevskiy: 0-2-0, 4.67 GAA, .855 save percentage

Game notes

  • Matinée hockey! The Bruins will player their second Atlantic Division game in as many outings, hosting Tampa at TD Garden today just two days after beating Buffalo at home as well.
  • It’s silly to draw conclusions after three games, but if you looked at the schedule in September and were told one of these teams would be winless and one would be undefeated, you could be excused for getting things backwards.
  • It hasn’t been a good start for Tampa, as the Bolts have not only lost their first two games, but have given up a whopping 10 goals between the two. They scored seven of their own, sure — but giving up five goals a game doesn’t sound like the stingy Lightning we’ve come to expect in recent years.
  • Per Raw Charge, this is the first time since Jon Cooper took over that Tampa has lost its first two games of the season.
  • It’s probably too early to sit your world-class goalie, but if Tampa wants to give Vasilevskiy a spell to try to get his game back on track, Phoenix Copley is their backup goalie.
  • We could be in for some fisticuffs today, with Tampa recently adding Curtis Douglas on waivers; he promptly fought in his first shift of his first game.
  • Hampus Lindholm skated on his own before practice on Sunday, and he’s officially still day-to-day.
  • After today’s game, the Bruins will head out west for games against Vegas, Colorado, and Utah.

  • As the Bruins continue to build upon their team and new line combos, you can already see things start to come together as 10 Bruins have registered at least a point through two games.
  • It’s only two games in, but Elias Lindholm already looks better than he did all last season. Lindholm has collected a goal in each game with three points total. David Pastrnak already has four points on one goal and three assists.
  • The Bruins were off yesterday so there hasn’t been an update on Hampus Lindholm who left after the first period on Thursday with a lower-body injury.
  • There’s something so nice about seeing the B’s power play at 28.6% and penalty kill at 100% — it’s not going to last so enjoy the nice stats now! Again, everything is too early to tell how special teams will play out, but penalty kill looks solid with how its killed off all eight penalties so far.
  • Buffalo dropped its first game of the season on Wednesday as they were blanked, 4-0, by the New York Rangers.
  • The Sabres are only one game in and already stricken with some injuries and illnesses. Josh Norris is being evaluated for an upper-body injury after leaving Thursday’s game. Owen Power remains out on illness. Zach Benson had a face injury, and isn’t slated to return until next well.

Morning Skate: Defeated

gettyimages-2240480356.jpg

Welcome to Tuesday, folks!

While it’s important to have goals, dreams, and aspirations, all good things come to an end — and that’s what happened on Monday afternoon, as the Bruins’ completely reasonable dream of going 82-0 came to an end.

Tampa Bay skated to its first win of the season, handing the B’s their first loss in the process, a 4-3 decision at TD Garden.

On the minus side, the Bruins had a pretty messy time in their own zone and spotted Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead, looking more like the “this season could be a grind” team many feared.

On the plus side, the B’s remained very much in the game until the final whistle, and showed some moxie to hang around.

The choice is yours, and yours alone.

Sorry about the lack of full recap yesterday, but it was tough to cover the game on a work day.

Joonas Korpisalo made 19 saves in the loss, while Casey Mittelstadt, Jordan Harris, and Morgan Geekie were the goalscorers for the Bruins.

You can catch full highlights from today here, if you’d like to catch up.

While he didn’t end up scoring, David Pastrnak had himself quite an eventful game — or, more specifically, an eventful final 90 seconds, as he managed to make a kick save and lay out Nikita Kucherov on the same shift.

BOS comeback effort fell short, but it was certainly an eventful final few minutes for David Pastrnak including an empty net save on Brandon Hagel, and a great open ice hit on Nikita Kucherov. pic.twitter.com/ByOrmfEFkK

— Brian DeFelice (@briandefelice_) October 13, 2025

It continues to be silly that Pastrnak hasn’t been named captain, but we can argue about that for the rest of the season.

Anyways, the Bruins are now heading out on their first real road trip of the season, visiting Las Vegas, Colorado, and Utah.

Thursday’s game in Vegas will be at 10 PM, followed by a 9 PM start in Denver on Saturday and a far more reasonable 7 PM start in Salt Lake City on Sunday.

I appreciate the schedule-makers looking out for those of us who are well past our prime.

What’s on tap for today?

The Bruins’ choice of Lindholm as a third “A” isn’t surprising, but was hoping to see Pastrnak get the “C” with his growth in leadership of the last few seasons.
  • It’s going to take some time to adjust to new names and numbers, but overall the Bruins looked pretty good last night. Pastrnak didn’t miss a beat. With his goal, he’s now eight goals away from 400 career goals.
  • Will numerous penalties hurt the Bruins again though? The B’s took a few stick infractions despite managing to kill them off. Only the first game, but we’ll find out if old habits can be reversed. On the flip side, the penalty kill had a strong game, killing off all five penalties.
  • On the other side of things — after a season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Matt Grzelcyk is donning some new colors in another hometown return to the Garden. Grzelcyk recently inked a one-year, $1 million salary cap hit with the Blackhawks.
  • Chicago dropped its first game of the season on Tuesday night on the road, dropping 3-2 to the Florida Panthers. Knight made 34 saves in the lost while Tyler Bertuzzi picked up assists on both goals.

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Golden Knights

A 10 PM Eastern start?! In this economy?!

Yes, it’ll be the Bruins vs. the Golden Knights, far, far past my bedtime as the B’s begin a three-game trip through the western United States.

While we’ve all been impressed by the Bruins’ spirited start to the season, including the fight back-ability (just go with it, it’s a word) in Monday’s loss to Tampa, this trip should serve as a good measuring stick as to where this team is at the moment.

Vegas and Colorado both have Stanley Cup aspirations and are always tough places to play, so let’s see what the Bruins are made of.

If any of you fine folks have been to a game in Vegas, share your experience in the comments. I feel like their game presentation/general atmosphere gets a lot of press, but also wonder if it’s truly that different.

Anyways, something to talk about while we wait for 10 PM.

Discuss.

Morning Skate: Dazed

Welcome to Friday, folks!

In classic Las Vegas fashion, you can forgive the Bruins and their fans if they woke up a little fuzzy this morning.

It was a wild one at T-Mobile Arena, with the B’s ultimately falling to the Golden Knights, 6-5.

Similar to the game against Tampa, the Bruins were far too sloppy and far too careless in their own zone to really have a shot at winning.

However, just like in the Tampa game, they somehow found themselves in the game until the final whistle.

The Bruins fell behind 4-2 and 6-3 before eventually clawing back into the game early in the third. A late power play went by the wayside, and that was all she wrote.

It was a pretty dizzying affair overall, with two goals in the first four minutes of the game and three goals in five-plus minutes to start the third period.

Ultimately, it will go down as a loss, but to me, it’s another one of those “hey, they hung in there when they clearly weren’t playing their best” type efforts.

Those will get old at some point, of course, but with a positive start to the season, there’s enough goodwill built up for now.

(To me, anyways — you might be ready to fire and trade everyone already.)

A visit to Denver is up next for the Bruins, as they’ll face the Avalanche on Saturday night.

The Avs are 4-0-1 to start the season, including a thorough, tidy 4-1 win over Columbus on Thursday night.

A win over the Avs seems like a tall order, but the Bruins have shown that they’re capable of scoring thus far on the young season…it’s just the other end that needs some work.

What’s on tap for today? Will you take a nap to recover from the late game? No shame in that.
