Morning Skate: Intermission

gettyimages-2237816703.jpg

Welcome to October, folks!

It certainly feels like it in the Boston area, with chilly morning temperatures, a bit of a breeze, and some playoff baseball in the news.

If you’re a Red Sox fan, you’re in good spirits this morning after their 3-1 win over the Yankees last night.

As someone who has drifted away from baseball fandom in recent years, last night’s game was a good reminder of how tense playoff baseball can be.

Anyways, on to more relevant topics for this audience: the Bruins are free from preseason game action until Thursday night, when they’ll play the Capitals in DC in the penultimate game of the preseason.

They’ll be back on the ice at Warrior Arena for two split-squad practices today, one at 10 AM and one at 11:30 AM.

It seems likely that they’ll be another round of cuts at some point today, as there’s still a bit of roster trimming to do before Opening Night.

For guys on the bubble, Thursday’s game with the Capitals looms large as a last best chance to show something to Marco Sturm and Co.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • The Minnesota Wild got hit with some “good news, bad new,” as they signed pending UFA Kirill Kaprizov to the biggest contract in NHL history, then found out Mats Zuccarello will be out for a couple of months.
  • Former Canadien Max Pacioretty, who will always be intertwined with the Bruins after the injury he suffered at the hands of Zdeno Chara/the stanchion, retired this week and joined the University of Michigan’s coaching staff.
  • Gavin McKenna, the top prospect for next year’s draft, shared why he made the surprising decision to go the NCAA route.

Other than that, enjoy this last few days of relative calm — the regular season starts one week from today.

What else is on tap for the day?

Boston Fleet: Schedule released

gettyimages-2199639220.jpg

The PWHL dropped their schedule yesterday And there will be 30 Fleet games this season, 8 of their home games will be in Lowell while they currently have 4 games scheduled at Agganis Arena, the other 3 home games are TBA, with at least one likely two being located outside of New England for the Takeover Tour.

Once again the schedule makers were not kind to Fleet season ticket holders as only four of the home games with announced locations are on weekend dates, one at Agganis the others at Tsongas, six are on Wednesday, two at Agganis four at Tsongas, and two on Tuesday, one at each location.

It has been a long standing gripe for fans that Boston gets more weeknight home games then any other team and those calls will only be getting louder as of their 15 road games only five are not on a Friday Saturday or Sunday. Those games will also be particularly hard on the Fleet as they include two trips to Vancouver and one to Seattle, the other two are at New York.

Boston has two long road stretches, one after each of the breaks. The league will take a week long break after only two weeks and then a month long break for the Olympics in Italy. After the first break Boston will play four road games. After the Olympics Boston will not be at home for almost a month meaning a nearly two month stretch between home games, both of which are weeknights, during the period in which attention on the sport will be highest.

The Fleet will open the season in Lowell on a Sunday against Montreal, whom they will not see again until March. Montreal will also face the Fleet twice in the final month of the season.

A week later they travel north to Toronto for their first road game. They won’t see the Scepters for two months when they host Toronto and will play them twice more in March.

Next up will be Vancouver at Agganis. Boston plays Vancouver five times, twice on the road and three times as the home team, though two of the meetings do not have a location announced.

The last game before the first break is a rematch of the first Walter Cup Finals as Minnesota will head to Agganis. Minnesota will host Boston a few weeks later after the break before the two don’t meet again until March.

The first game out of the break will be a trip to New Jersey to play New York. Boston will send off their Olympians with a weeknight matinee against the Sirens and then their second game after the Olympics will be a mother trip to New Jersey before these teams will beet in the season finale.

Next up will be a trip to Seattle, where they play three times this season. The Fleet have Seattle three times before the Olympics and then the remaining two will be in March.

Closing out 2025 will be a trip to Ottawa. The Fleet do not have an announced home game against Ottawa until the penultimate game of the season with a second game in Ottawa and an unannounced ‘home’ game.

Just the Facts

  • Place to Watch: NESN, Monument Network
  • Place to Listen: 98.5 The Sports Hub

Game Preview

One more game, and this preseason, which as been nothing but deeply fun, deeply concerning, and deeply long, will at long last be over.

The Caps will be lining up with a mostly NHL roster, as one might expect for having so few spots really open to them. It’s a testament to how that team drafts that the Hershey Bears are usually graduating one or two guys a year; if not into the NHL with Washington, then at least somewhere. Boston sure could use a little bit of that.

Boston meanwhile is still experimenting with lines, but one would imagine they are planning to lineup with something resembling their opening night configuration. This is the last chance for guys like Fraser Minten and Matthew Poitras to perhaps solidify their place on the roster fully, so let’s hope they have enough of that vaunted “juice” to show a mostly-ready Caps what for.

Let’s find out how both sides interact…together!

Bruins make another round of cuts with one preseason game to go

gettyimages-2238413433.jpg

It’s getting close to crunch time for those on the Bruins roster bubble, with just one preseason game left and less than a week until Opening Night in D.C.

The B’s took another step towards finalizing their roster today, releasing a handful of players from NHL training camp.

Players sent directly to the Providence Bruins were Frederic Brunet, Riley Duran, Brett Harrison, and Fabian Lysell.

Players placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Providence were Patrick Brown, Michael Callahan, Georgii Merkulov, Victor Soderstrom, and Riley Tufte.

The waiver players can now be claimed by any NHL team, with the Bruins hoping to sneak them through for future use.

You might be able to make an argument for placing a claim on a player or two here, but it’s also worth pointing out that just about every other NHL team is also busy trying to finalize its Opening Night roster right now.

For the first group, it was always likely that Brown and Harrison would be going to Providence, but it’s awkward timing to send them down just after a two-goal (Harrison) and two-assist (Brown) night.

And then we come to Lysell, who appears to be facing another year of not being ready to make the jump.

He certainly didn’t have an awful training camp, but also didn’t really have the kind of camp required to seize an NHL roster spot either.

He’ll have a shot to earn an NHL recall at some point soon, but this feels like the second or third year in a row where we’ve heard that same story.

The Bruins will wrap up the preseason on Saturday, with a 2 PM game against the New York Rangers at TD Garden.

The P-Bruins have a preseason game on Friday night, then their regular season gets underway on October 12.

Preseason Public Skate: Bruins vs. Rangers

gettyimages-2237022331.jpg

Happy Saturday, folks!

The Bruins will face the New York Rangers in their last preseason tune-up this afternoon, with Opening Night just a few days away.

  • When: Today, 2 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Blueshirt Banter

As you may already know, the Bruins made a series of roster cuts on Friday, sending guys like Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, and Michael Callahan to Providence either or directly or via the waiver wire (provided no one gets claimed).

As a result, the B’s will likely ice a much more NHL-ready roster for this afternoon’s game, both because it’s the last chance to shake off some rust and because many of the fringe players have been released from camp.

While there’s always the chance of an in-season call-up, today represents the best chance for some on-the-bubble guys to earn their spot on the roster in Washington four days from today.

Playing for the Bruins today will be:

  • Goalies: Michael DiPietro, Jeremy Swayman, Joonas Korpisalo
  • Defensemen: Mason Lohrei, Henri Jokiharju, Andrew Peeke, Hampus Lindholm, Jordan Harris, Jonathan Aspirot, Charlie McAvoy, Nikita Zadorov
  • Forwards: Casey Mittelstadt, Matej Blumel, Pavel Zacha, Johnny Beecher, Alex Steeves, Elias Lindholm, Morgan Geekie, Mark Kastelic, Jeffrey Viel, Matthew Poitras, Sean Kuraly, Viktor Arvidsson, Mikey Eyssimont, Tanner Jeannot, David Pastrnak, Marat Khusnutdinov, Fraser Minten

Unlike the Bruins, we will not be demoting any of you fine folks to the Providence Cup of Chowder after today’s game, so you have plenty of time to round yourself into mid-season commenting form.

Discuss.
