NFL Draft Profile: DE Sai’vion Jones, LSU

LSU v Arkansas

Cleveland might have room for a DE who can be part of the rotation as a rookie and the potential to be something more.

The Cleveland Browns have taken the “whole is greater than the sum of the parts” approach to the defensive end position opposite Myles Garrett.

The club returns Ogbo Okoronkwo, Cameron Thomas, Alex Wright, Sam Kamara, Isaiah McGuire, and Elerson Smith from last year’s team. The only additions in free agency were Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Julian Okwara, both on short-term deals.

While it may seem as if the Browns are set, there is room to add talent from the 2025 NFL Draft if the right name comes along, and that name could be Sai’vion Jones of LSU.

STOCK-UP One prospect who made big jump in Week 1 from what @seniorbowl saw on summer tape was LSU's versatile DL #35 Sai'vion Jones.

What an Expert is Saying

Lance Zierlein at NFL.com:

A 4-3 defensive end who fits the NFL mold with size, toughness and effort. Jones has good bend and a couple of reliable moves to unlock the top of the rush. He rarely works beyond pocket depth and has an instinctive secondary rush to cook in the pocket. His hands are twitchy and violent but he allows blockers into his frame a little too often. Maximum energy is exerted on every rep but he might need to improve pacing to become more consistent against the run. Jones’ translatable traits and rush talent make him an ascending prospect who could see early third-down reps before taking on a starting spot in the future.

What an Expert is Saying (Bonus Round):

Pro Football Focus:

After seeing action in a rotational role as a freshman and sophomore, Jones became a full-time starter in 2023 and has his best year as a senior this past season. His 43 pressures wee tied for eighth among all edge defenders in the SEC.

While Jones was primarily an edge for the Tigers, he’s able to line up anywhere on the defensive line. He pairs his size with a motor that never quits while having solid tools. Jones employs multiple pass-rushing moves, but his hand size is still relatively unrefined.

Jones is a long and strong defensive end whose best traits fit for an odd front defense. He lacks the pass rush nuance to be a consistent backfield player, but can give you splash impact plays every week as a versatile defensive lineman.

Sai’vion Jones (@SaivionJ) slants inside, rips to clear & penetrates into the backfield for the TFL! #StopTheRun #SeniorBowl #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/7Zui9nim4c

— DLineVids (@dlinevids1) February 4, 2025

Fit with the Browns

A rotational player who can line up anywhere on the defensive line sounds like someone who would interest defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Jones may not be ready to be an every-down player as a rookie, but he could be a nice addition to the current rotation and potentially grow into more than that over the next few years.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

Jones would compete for snaps with Isaiah McGuire, Sam Kamara, Elerson Smith, Cameron Thomas, which is not exactly a daunting lineup.

Priority: Medium.

NFL Draft Profile: TE CJ Dippre, Alabama

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 28 Georgia at Alabama

Photo by Jeffrey Vest/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Cleveland could look to add a blocking TE late on Day 3 of the draft.

The Cleveland Browns are likely going to select a tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft.

That is the reality for a team whose current depth behind starter David Njoku consists of Brenden Bates, Tre’ McKitty, and Blake Whiteheart. The trio has combined for 22 receptions, 168 yards, and one touchdown at the NFL level.

Fortunately for Cleveland, general manager Andrew Berry has 10 selections to work with, and if he wants to wait until Day 3 to address the position, a player to keep an eye on is CJ Dippre from Alabama.

Alabama's CJ Dippre and Tim Smith are putting in work as the Senior Bowl approaches: pic.twitter.com/uWHAO19aEh

— Alabama Crimson Tide | AL.com (@aldotcomTide) January 30, 2025

What an Expert is Saying

Lance Zierlein at NFL.com:

Combination tight end who can help here and there as both a blocker and pass catcher. Dippre is a big target underneath and can win contested catches. His play speed appears to be average and he struggles to avoid contact when getting through his route. Dippre was used as a connected blocker and moving lead blocker at Alabama. He has the size to take on pro run-blocking challenges, but the aggression and finish is lacking. Dippre won’t stand out in either phase, but he’s adequate in both and has traits that should give him a chance to make a team.

What an Expert is Saying (Bonus Round):

Daniel Harms at The Draft Network:

Dippre is a physical blocker whose feet can get a bit wide and allow defenders into his chest, but he plays with a finisher’s mentality. He recorded multiple pancakes against Auburn and looks to put opposing players in the dirt whenever the opportunity presents itself. He’s predominantly an in-line and detached tight end and successfully executed various blocks, but he could improve the lining up of blocks on the move to be more impactful. The effort is what coaches will be enthusiastic about when it comes to Dippre, and when he gets attached to a block, he can ride it for a while and does well to take defenders in the direction they want to go, just further than they intended.

As a receiver, Dippre is a quick outlet who does well locating soft spots underneath and becomes available to his quarterback. While in-line, he runs good seam routes with manipulation tactics to move defenders in man or zone out of his way and uncover in the intermediate parts of the field. He runs with good pace and turns to locate the football with great timing. He doesn’t have the crispest route tree and struggles to create separation against man coverage, but he gets the proper depth when running a “pick” crossing route to uncover a teammate. When going to catch the football, contact at the catch point bothers him, leading to several drops this past season. Once he gets the ball, he made the first defender miss more than expected with quick catch-to-attack urgency and a great feel for space immediately after the catch. He isn’t the most dynamic athlete at tight end, but he’s efficient in his movements and gets upfield quickly.

There isn’t much production for Dippre across four collegiate seasons, but he profiles as a good blocking tight end with upside as a receiver in space. However, he lacks the ability to win in multiple ways as a receiver to be a true threat at the next level, and his athletic ability limits his upside.

CJ Dippre (Alabama TE) talks about his draft stock at the Senior Bowl and gives his thoughts on QB Ty Simpson #RollTide #TheDraftStartsInMOBILE https://t.co/t9QVTLPnCd

— J.B. #SportsTalkJB (@young_ent_) January 31, 2025

Fit with the Browns

The Browns need to fill out the tight room, and having a player who projects to be a good blocking tight end and has upside as a second receiving option behind David Njoku has some potential in a Kevin Stefanski offense.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

Absolutely no one. The depth is pretty slim after Njoku, so Dippre could be battling only himself to earn a roster spot.

Priority: Medium to Upper-Medium

NFL free agency: Browns add cornerback just days before the NFL draft

Atlanta Falcons v Miami Dolphins

Jerome Baker reunited with long-time Dolphins teammate Nik Needham

The NFL draft is just days away but the NFL isn’t a league that keeps things in silos. While NFL draft prep is finishing up, NFL free agency is almost always going on and some teams (those with new coaches) have started offseason programs.

The Cleveland Browns roster has needs and places in the draft to fill those needs. While we all assume WR/CB Travis Hunter will help fill some of those needs, what position he is best at is still up in the air. GM Andrew Berry, often active in NFL free agency, reunited LB Jerome Baker with his Miami Dolphins teammate, CB Nik Needham, to help fill out the roster just days before the draft:

Adding another vet to our secondary!

We've signed CB Nik Needham » https://t.co/jrG5DonT6z pic.twitter.com/srGp5vKp3M

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) April 21, 2025

An undrafted free agent out of Texas-El Paso in 2019, Needham has played in 63 games, including 27 starts, in six seasons with the Dolphins. A majority of those games (45 of 63) were played in his first three seasons in the league.

In 2021 and 2022, Pro Football Focus gave Needham coverage grades over 66 (light green, good) but below 50 in 2020 and 2023.

Injuries have limited Needham in the last few seasons. The defensive back might be helpful on special teams but has limited experience (249 snaps) with his career high of 147 coming in 2021.

Browns Reacts Survey - Are you excited to have a 1st round pick again?

It's been awhile since the Browns last had a first-round pick.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cleveland Browns fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

This is our final Reacts survery before the Cleveland Browns 2025 NFL Draft. We've already asked a lot of the most prominent questions, so for this one, we're taking it a little bit lighter by asking you how it feels knowing that Cleveland even has a first round pick.

Does it feel like you just woke up from a bad dream and Christmas is here? In other words, moving on from that Deshaun Watson disaster.

Do you still think "a draft is a draft, no difference," meaning you feel no more excitement than the past couple years, despite the addition of a first round pick?

Or, are you so tuned out that you don't even care about the draft?

NFL Draft Profile: DT Nazir Stackhouse, Georgia

Georgia v Tennessee

Photo by Steve Limentani/ISI Photos/Getty Images

Browns may be willing to take a flyer on a stout run stopper late in the draft.

The Cleveland Browns may boast the game’s best defensive end in Myles Garrett, but when it comes to the defensive tackle position, the situation is less impressive.

Dalvin Tomlinson is gone as a post-June 1 cut, Mike Hall Jr. dealt with an injury as a rookie, and Shelby Harris and Maliek Collins are getting up there in age, so an influx of youth appears to be on the checklist for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry has six selections at his disposal on Day 3, so as the hour grows late on Saturday, a name to possibly keep an eye on is Nazir Stackhouse from Georgia.

What an Expert is Saying

Lance Zierlein at NFL.com:

Two-down rotational defensive tackle with good strength but limited production. Stackhouse is a block-eater with tight hips that limit his ability at the point of attack, but he’s still hard to move out of the hole. He’s more powerful than twitchy and is slow getting off the ball and into his action upfield or laterally. His lack of quickness, production and pass-rush ability could cap his draft value but there is always a market for big, strong guys who can play the run.

What an Expert is Saying (Bonus Round):

Kyle Crabbs at The 33rd Team:

Stackhouse is a stout interior defender who has been primed for an NFL role with his responsibilities playing at the heart of one of the best defenses in the country. This isn’t an explosive athlete, and there’s not a lot of tangible value to be found on passing downs, but role players like Stackhouse can be vital cogs in the DNA of successful fronts.

He’s dense and well-built, providing a sturdy base for which to set his roots in the run game. Stackhouse complements his frame and anchor with a heavy set of hands. He’s not the longest player at the point of attack, but his reach should be considered sufficient, and he does create knock-back with his stun to help him claim and maintain incremental real estate and bog down surge in the middle.

However, there’s little to no value for Stackhouse in passing downs. He’s a stale rusher with single-digit pressures during the last two seasons combined (nearly 500 passing reps).

Teams will need deep rotations or viable alternatives to avoid putting him in disadvantageous reps — but Stackhouse does threaten to be a personnel tell and mismatch identifier for opposing coaches and quarterbacks.

Just wrapped up mock 2.0 with @DTereman and one guy we talked about late in rd 7 was @GeorgiaFootball DT Nazir Stackhouse.

Felt like he was getting tons of love last year.

Now he's not even in the day 3 discussion.

Watch him blow up the interior OL here which leads to a sack pic.twitter.com/Dqg0ymmKEa

— Glenn Naughton (@JNRadio_Glenn) April 17, 2025

Fit with the Browns

Having a player who is stout against the run will always play well in the AFC North. But if that player has “little to no value” against the pass it may be hard to find a roster spot. But defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz does like to mix things up on passing downs by moving guys around, and the Browns do have plenty of rotational guys at defensive end to utilize that way against the pass. So with five selections across Rounds 6 and 7, maybe the Browns take a chance on Stackhouse?

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

The Browns are not robust at defensive tackle, so take your pick between Jowon Briggs and Ralph Holley.

Priority: Medium.

NFL draft, Browns rumor tracker: Keeping updated on Wednesday’s reports

Syndication: Green Bay Press-Gazette

Sarah Kloepping/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

NFL draft rumors don’t always mean anything but they are interesting to follow

The Cleveland Browns have been unofficially on the clock for the 2025 NFL draft for some time. We’ve believed that QB Cam Ward will be the first overall pick by the Tennessee Titans since around the NFL combine. Over time, more things have all but confirmed that selection.

Leaving the Browns and the second overall pick on the clock.

Tuesday, rumors started to heat up that Cleveland, along with the New York Giants, were in conversations about trading out of their early picks. Even more reports about the rumored moves happened later Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

A deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars could make sense for the Browns.

With so many reports coming out about a myriad of things, we decided to start a rumor tracker on Wednesday, a day earlier than planned, to try to keep you up to date.

Did Abdul Carter really beat you in chess?

Kevin Stefanski (smiling): "I'm not going to confirm, nor deny. But, maybe I let him beat me."

— Andrew Siciliano (@AndrewSiciliano) April 23, 2025

12:59 PM: Travis Hunter is not who Ward would have GM Andrew Berry select:

Denzel Ward: “Me selfishly, I would love Abdul Carter. Him and Myles (Garrett) on both sides, I think that'd be pretty cool and dominating for the defense.” https://t.co/yIcCpWSgui

DBN’s Community Mock Draft continues with the 25-28 picks

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl - South Carolina vs Illinois

This year’s DBN Community NFL Mock Draft continues, as the second half of the first round draws closer to a conclusion.

It’s time to kick off the 2025 DBN Community NFL Mock Draft! We are releasing four picks at a time in one post to give you more substance to digest how the draft is unfolding. Here you can see all of our NFL mock draft coverage for the Cleveland Browns.

Now, let’s see what the 25-28 picks are.

No. 25 - Texans - Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State

The selection and write-up were made by Chris Pokorny:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 09 Youngstown State at Ohio State
Photo by Jason Mowry/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

With the top two offensive tackles in the Top 10 picks, we’ve had a bit of a run without offensive tackles going off the board. That should please the Texans, who need to provide more time for C.J. Stroud if they want him to grow as a quarterback. It just so happens that this pick pairs him with an Ohio State alum. The only downside is that he is coming off of a non-contact patella injury in his left knee in October, which required surgery, but hopefully he is all clear from that.

No. 26 - Rams - Jihaad Campbell, LB, Alabama

The selection and write-up were made by Jared Mueller:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 ReliaQuest Bowl - Alabama vs Michigan
Photo by Sarah Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Los Angeles has been aggressive in filling their needs on the defensive side of the ball while Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Kyren Williams and HC Sean McVay run the offense. A long-term QB could be in play here but Campbell is the best linebacker in the draft and comes in to help the Rams immediately behind a young, stout front. Recovering from a torn labrum, Campbell is on track to start training camp with his new team.

No. 27 - Ravens - Nick Emmanwori, S, South Carolina

The selection and write-up were made by Jared Mueller:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 31 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl - South Carolina vs Illinois
Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The NFL Combine breakout star has the ability to play either safety spot and will partner with Kyle Hamilton to create a dynamic duo that can play all over the field. Emmanwori has the physical traits that Baltimore is known for turning into an elite playmaker with size, strength and speed. The right coaching could, as his NFL Network profile states, lead him to being “a Pro Bowl-caliber player” during his rookie contract.

No. 28 - Lions - Mike Green, EDGE, Marshall

The selection and write-up were made by Mudville:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 07 Marshall at Virginia Tech
Photo by Lee Coleman/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Lions are a solid team on both sides of the ball. However, they need improvement along the interior offensive line and with getting after the quarterback. Losing Hutchinson to injury really exposed the lack of an additional pass rusher and depth at the DE position and Edge has the better value than an IOL at this point in the draft. Green led the FBS in sacks last year with 17, added an additional 23 tackles for a loss and forced three fumbles last year. He has an impressive quick first step and gets into the backfield with ease and plays larger than his size. He will give the Lions a pass rush threat opposite of Hutchinson from the get-go.

Up next will be the 29-32 picks in the 2025 DBN Community Mock Draft.

NFL draft: Browns make trade, moving up in 2025, adding to 2027 draft

NFL: Scouting Combine

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

While rumors swirl of Browns trading out of the second pick, possibly with the Jaguars, another trade completed

The NFL draft is a few hours away, but Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry has reportedly been working the phones. While most believed that those calls were about trading down out of the second overall pick, including with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where a lot of options would be there for the Browns, Berry has a lot of draft picks to work with.

Many wondered how the team would deal with having four picks in the sixth round and another late in the seventh. While the roster needs depth, that is a lot of late picks that might not make the roster. With three hours to go until the draft, the Browns have figured out what they want to do by making a trade with the Houston Texans:

Trade!

Texans trade
2025 5th round pick (166 overall)
2027 5th round pick

Browns trade
2025 6th round pick (179 overall)
2025 6th round pick (216 overall)
2025 7th round pick (255 overall)

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 24, 2025

The simplified way of breaking down the deal is that Cleveland traded their 7th-round pick to move up 13 spots in this year’s draft. They then dealt a 6th round pick this year to move up a round in the 2027 draft.

The Texans quickly confirmed the deal:

It’s starting early today

Texans Trade:
2025 5th round pick (166 overall)
2027 5th round pick

Browns Trade:
2025 6th round pick (179 overall)
2025 6th round pick (216 overall)
2025 7th round pick (255 overall) pic.twitter.com/b7VeYpJUNt

— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) April 24, 2025

What do you think of this trade from the Browns perspective? Do you like getting 2 better picks for the price of 3 (and having to wait two years on one of them)?

Browns NFL draft Day 2: Talking about Shedeur Sanders... with myself

NCAA Football: Colorado NFL Showcase

Michael Ciaglo-Imagn Images

NFL draft rumors and talk is mostly about Shedeur Sanders and it feels like a Browns fit... or not

Day 2 of the NFL draft has come and QB Shedeur Sanders is still on the board with the Cleveland Browns having a chance to select him with the first pick of the second round. The Browns might see leverage power with that pick and move down, but Sanders is/will be the talk of Friday of the 2025 NFL draft.

The Sanders conversation has been overwhelming, on both sides, throughout the draft process. At one point, Sanders was considered a top-five pick. Obviously, that didn’t happen.

There are anonymous folks within the league who have made negative statements about the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, but all that matters, for our sake, is what Cleveland’s brass thinks about Deion Sanders’ son.

If you came here looking for a stake-in-the-ground take about whether the Browns should take Sanders on Friday, you probably came to the wrong place. Me talking to me about that and I haven’t come to an answer yet. Much like the legend Terry Pluto, talking to myself about Sanders in Cleveland has been an interesting exercise.

For the sake of the readers, I’m going to try to create a version of that streaming consciousness here:

  • “Should Deion or personality traits really impact whether the Browns take Sanders?”

I don’t think so. All that matters is whether Shedeur is coachable and gets along with his teammates. I’ve heard from a number of sources that Sanders was the one who really helped run meetings for the Buffaloes and make sure players were detail-oriented about the offense. Fans and insecure people might feel some kind of way about confidence, being talkative or even flashy clothes and parties but much of that was celebrated as the reason Baker Mayfield was drafted with the top overall pick.

Yes and no. Yes, for Cleveland to become a top-level team, the quarterback needs to be better than what Mayfield was with the team (and honestly, better than he is with the Bucs). On the other hand, there is a big difference between investing a top-five pick in a prospect with a high floor, lower ceiling than doing the same in the second round. If Sanders is the pick, he has a season to prove to Browns brass (not the fans) that his skill set can elevate the team over time.

  • “Does Sanders have enough arm to play in Cleveland/the AFC North?”

I think so. There are just a few throws per game that really matter in that way. Is he Josh Allen with a howitzer? No but neither is Joe Burrow. Timing and anticipation is why the Bengals QB wins. Sanders can do that. Also, quarterbacks can improve their velocity with small tweaks to their motion on top of strength work.

  • “Isn’t accuracy still important?”

It should be. It is actually something I might overvalue. I want a quarterback who throws the ball where he wants it to go. Not just area but placing it where his receiver doesn’t get lit up, has a chance to run after the catch and helps limit drop rates. Sanders was the most accurate quarterback last year and the most accurate when pressured. That should translate at the NFL but might need a little time to reveal itself (likely not on the field so fans will be concerned).

  • “If accuracy should translate, Sanders taking sacks is a problem, Jared.”

Thanks, Jared. That is one where I start to struggle. Sanders is great when he is a point guard, making quick decisions and moving on. When he tries to be a shooting guard/slashing small forward, things fall apart more than you’d like. Taking sacks in college tends to lead to taking sacks in the pros unless you have elite physical traits. Shedeur did not get Deion’s athletic ability, that is for sure. Hard, strong coaching matters a lot here which is where Bill Musgrave could be the perfect fit.

  • “If you take Sanders, fans will call for him to play as soon as Flacco/Pickett struggle, that is a distraction!”

As a fan, I care greatly about everything the Browns do. As a logical media person (as best as possible), I never want the Cleveland organization to make a single football decision because of fans. Listen to fans, sit with fans. (Maybe be better at listening to fans about non-football things though, please!)

  • “Does drafting Sanders in the second round mean they can’t take a quarterback in 2026 with one of their top picks?”

Nope. Worst case, the “extra” second-round pick from the trade down gave them a year to evaluate Sanders and he either ends up a solid backup or traded for a third or fourth rounder while the Browns get THE guy in ‘26. It is not a ton of sunk cost if it doesn’t work. If Sanders shows he can be a top 15-20 quarterback as a rookie (again, to the tea,m not fans), Cleveland has two first round picks to build around him.

  • “Do you want the high floor of Sanders over the high ceiling of Milroe?”

If I knew that, this piece would be titled differently and have an actual answer. I want both, really. Not two different players, but I want a quarterback with a high floor and the chance of a high ceiling. Those are called top 5 picks, in most drafts those are called THE top pick. I think Sanders would help the team make a playoff push in 2026, but have fans wanting him replaced by 2027 or 2028, while Milroe could either be a running back by 2027 or a top 10 explosive quarterback.

In the end, I can easily talk myself into drafting Sanders or passing on him. The best option would be to get a good trade offer to allow me to move down a little bit and let someone else take him but even that means I miss out on a high-floor player at the most important position in the draft. (Selecting Milroe later would help that, getting neither puts a TON of pressure on 2026)

Now that I’ve talked to myself about Sanders, talk back to me and other fans in the comment section below. If you’ve never signed up for an account with us, which you will need to comment,
you can do so here then come back and share your Sanders thoughts.

Browns NFL Draft: Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel brings dual-threat ability to the QB room

Rose Bowl Game Presented by Prudential - Ohio State V Oregon

Cleveland selected Dillon Gabriel at pick 94 in the 3rd round

The Cleveland Browns selected Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel with the 94th overall pick in round 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Gabriel is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the 2025 class, having played in 64 total games throughout his six-year career at UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. One of his most sought-after traits has been his ability to protect the football by limiting turnover-worthy throws.

He’s also pretty effective with his legs, both when he’s evading pressure in or around the pocket and on designed runs. Gabriel has made a lot of exciting plays throughout his career by escaping pressure and keeping his eyes downfield to find open receivers following a broken play.

Despite being an older and smaller quarterback, he’s played extremely well within structure wherever he’s been.

Day 2 — Adequate Starter

What an Expert is Saying

“Gabriel is a challenging scheme projection. He doesn’t have the arm to match his eye for the shot plays down the field and will need to play with better timing on these plays to get the ball up and down before defensive backs fall off.

Physically, he’s a fit for a west-coast, play-action-heavy offense, but his stature creates challenges with seeing the intermediate middle of the field cleanly. I would attempt to groom him in a Shanahan scheme as a developmental backup and optimize his understanding and anticipation. If he needs to play, I would lean heavily on the run game and his ability to get outside the pocket. ” - Kyle Crabbs, The 33rd Team

Fit with the Browns

The team entered the offseason with an incredible amount of uncertainty at the quarterback position, and the Dillon Gabriel selection doesn’t seem to clarify much on the surface.

They haven’t added anyone of note in free agency, but seeing that the Browns used a third-round pick on Gabriel suggests that he could be a legitimate option to see the field in 2025. It’s undoubtedly going to be interesting to see how the quarterback depth chart looks throughout the summer months.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

It’s difficult to try and predict what Gabriel’s ultimate role will be with Cleveland. He has a decent enough skillset to stick as a long-term backup, depending on how things shake out with Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco in 2025.

As mentioned above, it looks like the Browns could be ready to give him a real shot at starting some games at some point based on where he was drafted.

NFL draft profile: Browns QB Shedeur Sanders has the upside for Cleveland after huge fall

Oklahoma State v Colorado

After NFL draft rumors in the first round, Browns bring in Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round.

The Cleveland Browns stopped the fall of QB Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft. Sanders, who at one point was seen as a potential pick at the top of the draft and the first quarterback off the board, fell far beyond even his biggest detractors. Some, like ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., believed Sanders was the best QB in this year’s draft but the league showed him something else.

Even the Browns selected QB Dillon Gabriel instead of Sanders at the bottom of the third round, another in a long line of strange picks late in the third for this regime.

Sanders is one of the best-known quarterbacks in the last few draft classes, but many have struggled to properly evaluate him properly. Somewhere between “best quarterback in this draft” and being selected in the fifth round is probably accurate.

SB Nation’s Mark Schofield shared why Sanders fell in the draft, including some of his positives.

The upside is clearly there with Sanders:

Love this play from Shedeur Sanders. Shows so many of the strengths in his profile.

ID's the post-snap rotation to single-high immediately. Draws the safety farther into the middle with his eyes, then delivers a perfect bucket throw on the EZ fade with a rusher bearing down. pic.twitter.com/rQC8tebN0s

— Ian Cummings (@IC_Draft) April 11, 2025

The two photos below show where Sanders was successful in throwing certain routes (on the left) and how often he was asked to throw those routes (on the right):

Shedeur Sanders' profile is live at @RecepPerception.

He's insanely accurate. And what gets lost in the shuffle of the high volume of short-game discourse that we have is that he also threw 15% of his throws over 20 yards, more than Ward.

As Kinnan notes, Sanders threw a lot of short passes and deeper passes, its the intermediate where he had much fewer throws.

As we prepare for another exciting quarterback offseason and training camp, a look at how Sanders profiles heading to the next level:

The Draft Network’s Pre-Grade/Round Value

Prospect Projection: Day 1 — Pro Bowl Caliber

What an Expert is Saying

Although not close to the athlete his father was, Sanders is a controlled, polished passer who gets the ball out accurately in structure and when throwing on the move. He is a cool customer, and his high completion percentage reflects his steady heartbeat. However, he benefited from a high volume of screens and checkdowns (just 23.7 percent of his completions the past two seasons were on throws over 10 yards). The chief concern on his college tape is his inconsistent pocket feel, which was highlighted by poor protection — he will climb and maneuver on some plays, then drift or retreat on others, vastly lowering his success rate. Overall, Sanders doesn’t have the physical traits to get away with some of his decisions, but he is a poised, rhythmic passer when he stays true to his skill set, and he shows the necessary touch and confidence of an NFL starter. He fits best in a timing-based offense. - Dane Brugler, The Athletic

Fit with the Browns

Cleveland’s offense has been seen as a scheme fit for Sanders for some time. As noted by Brugler above, a timing and rhythm offense can put him in the best position to be successful and minimize some of his mistakes. Even as we all worked our way through why Sanders was falling, it is clear that teams (including the Browns, who selected Gabriel earlier) have concerns about his overall fit within the team, but the zone-scheme, west-coast offense is where Sanders could prove everyone wrong.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

Kenny Pickett?

The question mark is because we have so little understanding of what kind of prospect Sanders is and whether it was talent or something else that led him to fall. Joe Flacco could also be the answer to this question as his contract is mostly incentive-based. Perhaps the New Orleans Saints, who don't have an answer on Derek Carr’s injury, want someone to compete with Tyler Shough and trade for Flacco to assist with that process.

Browns Roster: Scouting the UDFA signings

NCAA Football: Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl-Miami (OH) at Colorado State

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

A deeper look at what the Browns are getting from their UDFA signings.

The 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Cleveland Browns stole the show by making two blockbuster moves involving the marquee stars from the University of Colorado. The front office has turned its attention to the remaining talent that went undrafted, and reports are already pouring in of signings.

You can follow along with our live tracker, but remember as of now, these are being reported by agents and media, and aren’t official until the teams announce them. It is common for players to change their minds during the process.

As of now, the Browns have reportedly agreed with the following players:

OT Jason Ivey - North Carolina A&T

Ivey appears to have a swing on athletic upside, but he may need time to put on more weight and add strength to become playable in the NFL. The Browns didn’t draft a tackle, so carving out a spot on the practice squad could be a real possibility.

Jason Ivey is a OT prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 6.22 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 571 out of 1508 OT from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/0PAOdn6mJg pic.twitter.com/oCDL94nFbq

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 10, 2025

S Donovan McMillon- Pittsburgh

McMillon fits the ideal profile of what the Browns tend to covet with undrafted free agents. His athletic testing and size suggest he can play in the league, and while in college, he proved to be a solid tackler and played well in coverage.

Donovan McMillon is a SS prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 9.20 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 99 out of 1228 SS from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/zoGwxIJZn0 pic.twitter.com/qsn2QhSPDU

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 4, 2025

CB Lamareon James - TCU

James should bring versatility to the corner room as he has experience on the outside although he may fit better as a slot in the league. He tested very well in speed and explosion drills.

LaMareon James is a CB prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored an unofficial 7.72 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 579 out of 2538 CB from 1987 to 2025.

Times unofficial, some splits may be projected.https://t.co/p0yh6VYiyU pic.twitter.com/SNAQT6sEk1

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) March 22, 2025

CB Dom Jones - Colorado State

Jones fits the Browns' mold of a long, rangy, athletic CB who excels as a press corner. He reportedly signed for guaranteed money as a part of his deal, so he has a shot to stick around.

Dom Jones is a CB prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 8.11 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 522 out of 2752 CB from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/OXTRSfUJYY pic.twitter.com/4unH0cETRT

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 3, 2025

OG Dartanyan Tinsley- Cincinnati

Tinsley has the rare combination of a thick, compact frame to go along with an incredible wingspan. He only played one year of high school football, and his traits make him worth the camp spot as a developmental prospect.

Dartanyan Tinsley is a OG prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 5.54 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 772 out of 1730 OG from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/FeAhqpLUTb pic.twitter.com/i6lQRGkLla

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 11, 2025

RB Ahmani Marshall - Appalachian State

Marshall is a compact runner with with good size. While his agility testing wasn’t great he may be able to fill a role as a short yardage back.

Ahmani Marshall is a RB prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 5.81 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 881 out of 2099 RB from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/fjq5GnYZaj pic.twitter.com/slnUWU8T4p

— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 8, 2025

TE Eli Wilson - Appalachian State

Wilson profiles as a move tight end and had decent production as a receiver last season. Overall, he is a decent athlete but a bit undersized and will need to get stronger and add weight.

Eli Wilson is a TE prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 5.67 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 578 out of 1332 TE from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/AvzrsbCjST pic.twitter.com/efuhy5wFcK

Browns Shedeur Sanders prank called during NFL draft by NFL coach’s son

NCAA Football: Colorado NFL Showcase

Michael Ciaglo-Imagn Images

Shedeur Sanders’ NFL draft slide was compounded by childish prank call, details involve Falcons DC

What most expected to be a huge celebration on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL draft turned into a three-day slog for QB Shedeur Sanders. The Cleveland Browns ended Sanders’ slide in the fifth round, on Day 3 of the draft, adding him to a quarterback room with four others.

The selection of Sanders is bound to bring more attention to a Browns franchise that is used to it, but mostly for negative reasons. The selection of Sanders is leading to positive NFL draft grades, including from Mel Kiper. Cleveland is hoping that a couple of key relationships help Sanders’ transition.

On Sunday, we learned about a different relationship that led to Sanders receiving a prank phone call on Day 2 of the NFL draft from someone saying he was with a team that was coming to get the falling QB:

from the Falcons: pic.twitter.com/BtEMZ33Fsi

— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) April 27, 2025

What looked like a random childish prank now has even more layers as the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator allowed information to become available, and his adult son used that information, trying to gain attention. Jax Ulbrich released a statement on social media stating he has spoken to Sanders to apologize:

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 27, 2025

There have been reports that other players, including TE Tyler Warren, received similar prank calls during the course of the NFL draft but, so far, those have not been connected to Ulbrich or the Atlanta franchise.

According to Adam Schefter, the Falcons do not plan any action against their defensive coordinator but will review their protocols to try to prevent a recurrence.

Browns NFL Draft: Greg Cosell praises one of Cleveland’s rookie quarterbacks

2025 NFL Draft - Round 1

Cosell spoke very highly of Dillon Gabriel on a recent addition of the Ross Tucker Podcast.

The Cleveland Browns’ 2025 NFL Draft class has been complimented by multiple members of the national media over the past two days, but one player in particular was praised by NFL Analyst and NFL Films Senior Producer Greg Cosell.

Cosell had some good things to say about Cleveland’s third-round pick, Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, on a recent edition of the Ross Tucker Podcast.

“I think that Gabriel is a guy that has a natural feel for the position. I think he’s got subtle and nuanced pocket movement, which you don’t see from a lot of college quarterbacks. I think he has a pretty refined feel for when to come off intermediate route concepts and check the ball down. He rarely gets stuck in the pocket.”

“I think that (Dillon) Gabriel is a guy that has a natural feel for the position.”@GregCosell breaks down why the Browns might’ve preferred Gabriel to Shedeur Sanders, Quinn Ewers, etc. pic.twitter.com/8aEfilnHKx

— Ross Tucker Podcast (@RossTuckerPod) April 28, 2025

He then goes on to describe how Kevin Stefanski’s offense is built on rhythm and timing with RPO and quick-game concepts, which is exactly what Gabriel needs to operate in at the NFL level to be successful.

NFL free agency: Browns apply seldom-used tender to wide receiver

NFL: Scouting Combine

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Just before reportedly signing Diontae Johnson, the Browns applied free agent tender to Elijah Moore

The Cleveland Browns were 3-14 last year and have almost totally remade their quarterback room in response to those failures. However you might rank those five quarterbacks, the Browns still have needs at wide receiver and safety, two positions that have only lost or potentially lost players of significance this offseason.

Specifically at the wide receiver position, things started to pick up in NFL free agency on Monday. Former Cleveland WR Elijah Moore took a visit with the Buffalo Bills, then the Browns reportedly signed well-traveled WR Diontae Johnson.

Cleveland GM Andrew Berry wasn’t done with Moore, showing why being the “smartest guys in the room” isn’t always a bad thing. Applying a seldom-used tag to Moore in case he does sign with the Bills also gives the Browns a chance to bring Moore back on a one-year, $3.428 million deal. The tender was last used in 2022, twice by the Kansas City Chiefs:

The UFA tender is rarely used. It was last used by the New York Giants in 2020. If either player signs with a new team before July 22 or the first day of training camp, whichever is later, the signings would count toward the NFL’s compensatory formula.

If they don’t sign by the deadline, the teams would retain exclusive negotiating rights to the respective players at 110% of their 2021 salaries, according to the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Before the move, if Moore had signed with Buffalo or any other team, it would not have counted against their compensatory picks for next year’s draft, nor would Cleveland benefit in the same formula. Now, any team signing Moore could see their formula impacted, which could lead to a reunion with the Browns this offseason.

As of now, Moore signing elsewhere would not lead to a comp pick for Cleveland, so the move indicates a strong desire to keep the former second-round pick with the Browns.

Having just completed his rookie contract, the 25-year-old Moore has spent most of his career as a slot receiver with a career high 61 catches in 2024 and a career high 640 yards in 2023, both with Cleveland.

Do you think the Browns should want to bring Moore back? How do you feel about a receiver room of Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, Diontae Johnson, Elijah Moore, DeAndre Carter and Jamari Thrash?

Browns lose front office exec just days after he spoke to media on Day 3 of NFL draft

2025 NFL Draft - Rounds 4-7

Dan Saganey was the Browns Director of Player Personnel, with the team since 2009

The NFL calendar is a unique one. Immediately following the season, “Black Monday” brings about a fresh batch of head coaches and general managers. After that, the pre-Combine process helps those coaches fill out their staffs while the new front office leader mostly keeps the scouting departments and the rest of the front office together through the NFL draft.

NFL free agency follows the NFL combine, with the NFL draft coming almost two months later.

Now, with the draft complete, and most of NFL free agency except the occasional signing like the Cleveland Browns just made, front office staffs undergo a second change. The Tennessee Titans are one of those teams with a new general manager, Mike Borgonzi, hired in January and now making more changes by robbing from the Browns front office:

#Titans Hiring #Browns Director of Player Personnel Dan Saganeyhttps://t.co/81fh4qmMva

— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) April 29, 2025

Saganey has been with the Cleveland organization since 2009 and spoke following the Browns draft on Day 3:

— Daryl Ruiter (@RuiterWrongFAN) April 26, 2025

This is not the first time recently that Tennessee has found an important member of their team. Last offseason, Bill Callahan was hired to be his son’s offensive line coach with the permission of the Browns.

Saganey has been in his position with Cleveland since 2016. His new role with the Titans has not been announced at this time.
