NFL Draft Profile: DE Sai’vion Jones, LSU

Cleveland might have room for a DE who can be part of the rotation as a rookie and the potential to be something more.

The Cleveland Browns have taken the “whole is greater than the sum of the parts” approach to the defensive end position opposite Myles Garrett.

The club returns Ogbo Okoronkwo, Cameron Thomas, Alex Wright, Sam Kamara, Isaiah McGuire, and Elerson Smith from last year’s team. The only additions in free agency were Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Julian Okwara, both on short-term deals.

While it may seem as if the Browns are set, there is room to add talent from the 2025 NFL Draft if the right name comes along, and that name could be Sai’vion Jones of LSU.

What an Expert is Saying

Lance Zierlein at NFL.com:

A 4-3 defensive end who fits the NFL mold with size, toughness and effort. Jones has good bend and a couple of reliable moves to unlock the top of the rush. He rarely works beyond pocket depth and has an instinctive secondary rush to cook in the pocket. His hands are twitchy and violent but he allows blockers into his frame a little too often. Maximum energy is exerted on every rep but he might need to improve pacing to become more consistent against the run. Jones’ translatable traits and rush talent make him an ascending prospect who could see early third-down reps before taking on a starting spot in the future.

After seeing action in a rotational role as a freshman and sophomore, Jones became a full-time starter in 2023 and has his best year as a senior this past season. His 43 pressures wee tied for eighth among all edge defenders in the SEC.

While Jones was primarily an edge for the Tigers, he’s able to line up anywhere on the defensive line. He pairs his size with a motor that never quits while having solid tools. Jones employs multiple pass-rushing moves, but his hand size is still relatively unrefined.

Jones is a long and strong defensive end whose best traits fit for an odd front defense. He lacks the pass rush nuance to be a consistent backfield player, but can give you splash impact plays every week as a versatile defensive lineman.

Fit with the Browns

A rotational player who can line up anywhere on the defensive line sounds like someone who would interest defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Jones may not be ready to be an every-down player as a rookie, but he could be a nice addition to the current rotation and potentially grow into more than that over the next few years.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

Jones would compete for snaps with Isaiah McGuire, Sam Kamara, Elerson Smith, Cameron Thomas, which is not exactly a daunting lineup.

NFL Draft Profile: TE CJ Dippre, Alabama

Cleveland could look to add a blocking TE late on Day 3 of the draft.

The Cleveland Browns are likely going to select a tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft.

That is the reality for a team whose current depth behind starter David Njoku consists of Brenden Bates, Tre’ McKitty, and Blake Whiteheart. The trio has combined for 22 receptions, 168 yards, and one touchdown at the NFL level.

Fortunately for Cleveland, general manager Andrew Berry has 10 selections to work with, and if he wants to wait until Day 3 to address the position, a player to keep an eye on is CJ Dippre from Alabama.

Combination tight end who can help here and there as both a blocker and pass catcher. Dippre is a big target underneath and can win contested catches. His play speed appears to be average and he struggles to avoid contact when getting through his route. Dippre was used as a connected blocker and moving lead blocker at Alabama. He has the size to take on pro run-blocking challenges, but the aggression and finish is lacking. Dippre won’t stand out in either phase, but he’s adequate in both and has traits that should give him a chance to make a team.

Dippre is a physical blocker whose feet can get a bit wide and allow defenders into his chest, but he plays with a finisher’s mentality. He recorded multiple pancakes against Auburn and looks to put opposing players in the dirt whenever the opportunity presents itself. He’s predominantly an in-line and detached tight end and successfully executed various blocks, but he could improve the lining up of blocks on the move to be more impactful. The effort is what coaches will be enthusiastic about when it comes to Dippre, and when he gets attached to a block, he can ride it for a while and does well to take defenders in the direction they want to go, just further than they intended.

As a receiver, Dippre is a quick outlet who does well locating soft spots underneath and becomes available to his quarterback. While in-line, he runs good seam routes with manipulation tactics to move defenders in man or zone out of his way and uncover in the intermediate parts of the field. He runs with good pace and turns to locate the football with great timing. He doesn’t have the crispest route tree and struggles to create separation against man coverage, but he gets the proper depth when running a “pick” crossing route to uncover a teammate. When going to catch the football, contact at the catch point bothers him, leading to several drops this past season. Once he gets the ball, he made the first defender miss more than expected with quick catch-to-attack urgency and a great feel for space immediately after the catch. He isn’t the most dynamic athlete at tight end, but he’s efficient in his movements and gets upfield quickly.

There isn’t much production for Dippre across four collegiate seasons, but he profiles as a good blocking tight end with upside as a receiver in space. However, he lacks the ability to win in multiple ways as a receiver to be a true threat at the next level, and his athletic ability limits his upside.

Fit with the Browns

The Browns need to fill out the tight room, and having a player who projects to be a good blocking tight end and has upside as a second receiving option behind David Njoku has some potential in a Kevin Stefanski offense.

Browns Player Drafting Could Impact

Absolutely no one. The depth is pretty slim after Njoku, so Dippre could be battling only himself to earn a roster spot.
