The Cleveland Browns have been struggling with injuries, both on and off the field, amid the outside noise. Hosting the talented Buffalo Bills, with their creative and difficult pass defense, is not what the doctor ordered in advance of Christmas in Week 16.

Who knows what the future holds for the Cleveland Browns, especially for HC Kevin Stefanski. The immediate future has the Buffalo Bills coming to town looking to build their playoff resume, while Browns fans hope for 2026 NFL draft positioning and another chance for QB Shedeur Sanders to prove something.

The first injury report of the week was loaded with players sitting out, a majority on the home team’s side. Thursday’s report saw a few changes for Cleveland (in bold below):

Browns Injury Report

Browns line, QB play dramatically hurting RB Quinshon Judkins’ performance

gettyimages-2251383034.jpg

The highly touted Cleveland Browns 2025 NFL draft class has had only two standouts on the offensive side of the ball, with hope coming from RB Dylan Sampson. There is still a chance that QB Shedeur Sanders could help put the class over the top, but the inconsistency means the team is more likely to draft a quarterback at the top of the 2026 NFL draft than to roll with him moving forward.

While TE Harold Fannin Jr. has only increased his production as the season has gone on, RB Quinshon Judkins has been the victim of bad offensive line play and the lack of concern defenses have for the Browns passing attack. His raw numbers (805 yards, 7 TDs) are good for a rookie, but his yards per attempt average is down to 3.6 and his game logs show a problematic trend:

  • Week 6: 12 carries, 36 yards
  • Week 8: 9 carries, 19 yards
  • Week 11: 17 carries, 59 yards
  • Week 12: 16 carries, 47 yards (the lone victory in this group of games)
  • Week 14: 14 carries, 26 yards
  • Week 15: 12 carries, 21 yards

The three weeks skipped in those game logs combine for 70 carries and 250 yards, still a 3.5 yards per carry average.

You gotta feel for Judkins, who is getting hit constantly behind the line of scrimmage. In the last 5 games, 37 of his 82 carries have gone for 2 yards or less with a staggering 12 negative-yard carries. https://t.co/uGcSSrQWoA

— Anthony Lima (@SportsBoyTony) December 17, 2025

The advanced data is even more staggering:

Browns Run Game Analysis

Quinshon Judkins
EPA: -34.43 (37th of 39)
EPA/ATT: -0.155 (35th)
DVOA: -3.6% (29th)
Yards before contact: 1.5 yards (28th)
Yards after contact: 2.1 yards (29th)
Forced Missed Tackle Rate: 20.7% (21st)
Explosive Play Rate: 8.1% (33rd)
Stuff Rate: 22.5%… pic.twitter.com/Wsh2gDKiV6

— Dan Mitchell (@realdanmitchell) December 17, 2025

At one point, Judkins was squarely in the conversation for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Now, he’s been passed by Fannin and former Ohio State Buckeyes teammate TreVeyon Henderson in the award’s odds. Seventh-round pick RB Kyle Monangai has the same odds as Judkins.

One of the best parts of football is how 11 guys work together and impact each other. It is also why evaluating individual players sometimes is really difficult and nuanced. Is Judkins on track to be the next Nick Chubb? Maybe, but the play of those around him on offense makes it very difficult to know for sure.

Browns fans have been arguing about whether the team should draft a quarterback or focus on building around him on the offensive line and receiver groups. For Judkins’ sake, hopefully the answer is all of the above, or Sanders turns out to be great in the last three games of the season.

Are you surprised by the numbers above? How do you evaluate Judkins’ performances given the struggles around him?

Philip Rivers’ return: Which recently retired player from Browns history could help the team?

gettyimages-1043883074.jpg

The recent return of Phillip Rivers to the Indianapolis Colts prompts consideration of which players might be pulled out of retirement to help other teams in the league. Given the dysfunction that the Cleveland Browns have had over the years, there aren’t many great players who have spent a large portion of their career dominating in Cleveland. Even with that, there are still a few players who have retired in the last few years who could maybe help out this struggling roster.

Wide receiver Amari Cooper spent just over two seasons with the Browns after Andrew Berry made a trade to bring him over in 2022. Cooper had two seasons with over 1,000 yards receiving and was a real focal point of the Cleveland offense. He announced his retirement from football in September 2025, but at just 31 years old, it’s easy to wonder if Cooper could help contribute to this Browns roster. The Cleveland offense has struggled to find any consistency in its wide receiver group this year, and even with Cooper’s decline, he would certainly be a better option than several guys on the current roster.

Another previous Browns receiver who had some success during his time in Cleveland is Rashard Higgins. His career really took off due to his connection at the time with Baker Mayfield, and fans were endeared by his love for the Browns. Though a lesser talent than Amari Cooper, a 31-year-old Higgins could bring a spark to the Cleveland offense and an appreciation for the city that is so desperately missing from this current group.

Christian Kirksey also signed a one-day contract to retire as a Brown last year and Za’Darius Smith quickly after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles this year as well, but Cleveland’s defense doesn’t have the same need as the other side of the ball.

Let me know what you think in the comments – What Browns player would you pull out of retirement to help this team?

Bills, Browns each rule out multiple key players for Week 16 matchup due to injuries

gettyimages-2250588008.jpg

When the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills hit the field in Week 16, some key players from both sides will not be playing due to injuries. For the Browns, compared to the inactive list full of injured players who were ruled out due to injuries in Week 15, Week 16 is an improvement, but they need all the help they can get against a formidable Bills squad.

At the start of the week’s practices, 13 players were not practicing. On Thursday, things improved slightly for Cleveland. On Friday, Buffalo saw some key players return to practice, leading to each team ruling out a few key players for Sunday’s matchup.

Browns Injury Report

  • OT Jack Conklin – Concussion – Out
  • CB Denzel Ward – Calf – Out
  • QB Deshaun Watson – Achilles – Out (Left on injured reserve with just a few days left to make a decision)
  • TE David Njoku – Knee – Out
  • LB Winston Reid – Back – Out (Opened practice window this week)
  • RB Dylan Sampson – Hand – Out
  • OL Wyatt Teller – Calf – Questionable
  • DT Sam Kamara – Elbow – Questionable

Bills Injury Report

  • DT Jordan Phillips – Ankle – Out
  • K Matt Prater – Right quad – Out
  • OT Chase Lundt – Knee – Out
  • WR Mecole Hardman – Calf – Questionable (Eligible to return from IR)
  • DB Cam Lewis – Hamstring – Questionable

We will find out 90 minutes before kickoff which of the questionable players are able to play on Sunday, just a few days before Christmas.

Cleveland Browns vs. Buffalo Bills Week 16 Predictions – It’s not going to be pretty

gettyimages-1187445892.jpg

This Sunday, the Cleveland Browns take on the Buffalo Bills. Below, we analyze a few advantages, disadvantages, or general thoughts about the two teams before getting to our predictions for the game.

What’s There Left to do but Tank?

gettyimages-1187445892.jpg

Things fell quick, and fast. For many of weeks, I saw a Cleveland Browns team that had that formula of a good defense, but was plagued by bad field position and occasional untimely drives allowed. Special teams has been so far below average most weeks that it is ridiculous. And the offense, which has been bad all season, gave a glimmer of hope with Shedeur Sanders taking the reigns. Ultimately, those things still combined for a loss more times than not, but at least there was reason to believe the team could pull off an upset.

Not anymore. Last week’s loss to the Bears was lifeless. The combination of a few more injuries, the offensive line being really out of sorts, and facing an actual good team, showed how this team has no shot of playing spoiler at this time of year. If it were earlier in the year, I think you could make the case that the defense holds Josh Allen in check for a decent portion of the game, and then you just hope for the best. Now, though, with the running threat that he and James Cook present, coupled with the fact that the secondary can’t stop anyone, the defense has fallen to below average in my estimation. The offensive line makes it so the ground game just can’t get any traction, and that makes things challenging for the passing game to really get going. And special teams is still horrific.

Why win now, anyway? Like last week, there are two things I’m still cheering for: Sanders to look good at quarterback, and Myles Garrett to get his sack record, however cheap the sacks may come. Those two elements alone aren’t going to beat a team like the Bills, and ultimately, better draft position is what helps the Browns from here on out.

Quick Hitters

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was asked whether injuries are the reason the defense has struggled the past two weeks:

“No, I mean everybody’s got injuries. We don’t look at that. I mean anybody’s on the field; we expect to do their job and be able to play. I think probably the biggest thing, like I said the last couple weeks, has been run game. We held San Fran in pretty good check with Christian McCaffrey. And then we gave up a couple big plays against the Titans. And then last week it wasn’t big plays, it was more the consistency of the run game. And we need to be able to shed blocks a little bit better. We didn’t tackle very well in the Chicago game, particularly out on the perimeter and we paid the price for it. So, when it’s all said and done, defenses are judged by your ability to tackle, your ability to stop drives, and a big part of that is stopping the run. So great challenge this week with Buffalo, they’re the best run offense in the NFL. So if we don’t get it corrected, we won’t stand a chance in this game.”

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees was asked about how to combat the Bills’ second-ranked pass defense:

Yeah, look, they do a lot of good things in coverage. They got veteran players in the back end that have been in that system a long time. Obviously head coach is a defensive back guy by trade and they take a lot of pride, in their ability to have a vary of coverage, to have disguise in their coverages and trying to keep you off balance. They do a really nice job there. They focus on coverage. I think we have to find a balance. We have to find the ability to run the ball. You know, it’s kind of been hot and cold for us throughout the year, and we got to really rely on that and find ways to get Q (Quinshon Judkins) going and allow our offense to be complementary like when you can run the ball well, it really opens up a lot of things and you can stay efficient and it keeps you in better situations on third down. So definitely a huge point of emphasis for us.”

Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone talked about multiple kickoffs (with the Browns fielding) going for touchbacks to the 20 yard line last week:

“No, not necessarily. I mean, we want to try to field every single ball possible. I will say that there are times where if the ball doesn’t take…like say the ball does hit the ground and you don’t field it clean and it does end up rolling into the end zone, don’t make a bad play worse, because then you can still get the touchback at the 20. But ideally, we want to field every ball if possible and then obviously return it. It does affect the return when the ball gets to the ground, there’s more time that you have to sustain a block, there’s more space for the coverage player to be able to run around. So, the timing of the return doesn’t really match up if the ball is on the ground and you don’t get it clean. Now, if it hits the ground, you get it on, like, one hop, that’s just less time that it’s taking for the return, so everything impacts it. Now, the other thing that hurts, too, is like, when the ball does hit the ground, as a blocker, you don’t really know how long the ball’s on the ground for because you’re not watching the returner pick the ball up. So, as you go back, as you’re seeing the returner, ‘okay, the ball’s on the ground, my eyes go back to my guy – does he field it clean? Does he not?’ So, there’s some gray area there as a blocker, you don’t know how long. So, we give our guys some things that they use in their technique, so.”

Some other notes to look forward to:

  • Harold Fannin had 11 targets two weeks ago and 14 targets last week. I’m all for him seeing the ball more, but it did appear as though the Bears keyed in on him more, believing he was the main person Sanders was looking for. It’s an indictment of this Browns receiving group in general. It’d be nice to tell Sanders to spread the ball to everyone, which I think he actually tries to do, but how can you be confident in it when a guy like Jerry Jeudy gifts a touchdown to the opposition last week?

Predictions

Here are predictions from multiple staff members at DBN:

Chris Pokorny: “It should say something when my optimistic spirit for the season has burned out. We’ve seen this same song-and-dance one too many times.” Bills 31, Browns 10

Jared Mueller: “The Bills lost to the Falcons because of Atlanta’s run game and pass rush. The Browns have a good running back (but not good run blocking) and a great pass rush. Cleveland will give the Bills more trouble than many are expecting, creating a tasty little betting line, and Buffalo could be in position for a trap game.

All that said, the Bills are going to beat the Browns pretty handily.” Bills 24, Browns 13

Curtiss Brown: “I can’t really gauge whether or not the Bills are a legit Super Bowl contender or not. Make no mistake this team is good but the flaws are evident. Defensively, the unit is okay but flawed in some areas (mainly against the run). Offensively, the Bills generate a ton of big plays mainly due to quarterback Josh Allen and running back James Cook. Tight end Dalton Kincaid and wide receiver Khalil Shakir chips in from time to time.

Considering how the Bills were down 24-7 last week and were about to get ran out of Foxboro to come back and outscore the Pats 28-7 in the second half shows the mental fortitude this team has. Cleveland’s offense will struggle but I think the defense will find a way to make Allen work. Again, this Bills team has had questionable losses and they can be prone to it. But not this time because Josh Allen won’t allow it.” Bills 23, Browns 13

Barry Shuck: “A tune-up game for the Bills before the playoffs? Maybe play all their scrubs in the second half? The Browns should be using these final games to see what they have at the backup positions. Get good scouting on guys like Donovan McMillion, Zak Zinter, Jeremiah Byers, Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, Sam Webb, D’Angelo Ross, and both rookie QBs.” Bills 41, Browns 17

Ezweav: “Good guys got rolled by a decent-not-great Bears team last week. Bills might be a legit super bowl contender so this looks like a horror show on paper, which is probably how it will play out. Shedeur struggled but also did show some progress on things last week. But all it took was a sequence of a bad read/throw/pick followed immediately by a real (if lucky) FQB play by Chicago and the lights were turned all the way out. I’d expect about the same this week.

Defense will (once again) show up but this one won’t be close. Myles will get closer to the record but not quite break it.” Bills 28, Browns 7

Who do you think will win, Browns fans? Let us know in the comments section below.

Browns, Bills Week 16 inactives: Wyatt Teller, Mike Hall status official

gettyimages-2249758066.jpg

As the Cleveland Browns host the Buffalo Bills in Week 16 of the 2025 NFL season, Browns fans get to see what a playoff-caliber NFL team looks like while rooting for 2026 NFL draft order positioning. Cleveland may or may not be looking for new leadership, according to recent speculation, while also looking for the “Quarterback of the Future” if Shedeur Sanders doesn’t have a couple of breakthrough games.

That will be difficult against a versatile pass defense from the Bills.

Not having OT Jack Conklin (now on IR), TE David Njoku, and RB Dylan Sampson, along with OL Wyatt Teller and DT Mike Hall Jr. (added Saturday with illness) being questionable, won’t help Sanders either. Cleveland did not elevate or sign an offensive lineman on Saturday, a good sign that Teller will be able to play.

Now, with 90 minutes to go until gametime, both teams have submitted their inactive lists for Week 16’s matchup off the shores of Lake Erie.

Browns Inactive List

  • CB Denzel Ward
  • TE David Njoku
  • RB Dylan Sampson
  • DT Mike Hall Jr.
  • OL Wyatt Teller
  • WR Jamari Thrash
  • DT Sam Kamara

Hall and Teller are inactive, another set of huge hits to the talent base for Cleveland.

Bills Inactive List

  • DT Jordan Phillips
  • K Matt Prater
  • OT Chase Lundt
  • WR Keon Coleman
  • WR Gabe Davis
  • S Darnell Savage
  • DT Larry Ogunjobi
  • OL Tylan Grable

Some big names on Buffalo’s list for today, including a former first-round pick (Coleman) and a former Browns starter (Ogunjobi).

Browns NFL Draft order 2026: Where Cleveland stands after Week 16

gettyimages-2211390118.jpg

The Cleveland Browns head into the final two weeks of the 2025 NFL season with a clear chance to clinch one of the first two picks in the 2026 NFL draft. The Browns moved up to the third spot after the early Week 16 games on Sunday, but saw the Las Vegas Raiders fail to knock off the Houston Texans in a very close game that would have helped Cleveland move up even further.

The Browns close loss to the Buffalo Bills was made much worse by the significant injuries to RB Quinshon Judkins. While there was a positive estimate after the game, Cleveland fans await confirmation on whether Judkins’ ligaments are intact.

With just two games left in Week 16, the Browns remain locked into the third spot in the 2026 NFL draft order, with the pick they acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars likely awaiting the results in the NFL playoffs.

Updated NFL Draft order

  1. New York Giants
  2. Las Vegas Raiders
  3. Cleveland Browns
  4. New York Jets
  5. Tennessee Titans
  6. Arizona Cardinals
  7. Washington Commanders
  8. New Orleans Saints
  9. Cincinnati Bengals
  10. Miami Dolphins
  11. Los Angeles Rams (via Atlanta Falcons)
  12. Kansas City Chiefs
  13. Dallas Cowboys
  14. Minnesota Vikings
  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  16. Baltimore Ravens
  17. Detroit Lions
  18. New York Jets (via Indianapolis Colts)
  19. Carolina Panthers
  20. Pittsburgh Steelers
  21. Dallas Cowboys (via Green Bay Packers)
  22. Philadelphia Eagles
  23. Houston Texans
  24. Buffalo Bills
  25. San Francisco 49ers
  26. Los Angeles Chargers
  27. Cleveland Browns (via Jacksonville Jaguars)
  28. Los Angeles Rams
  29. Chicago Bears
  30. New England Patriots
  31. Denver Broncos
  32. Seattle Seahawks

The Giants and Raiders play each other next week, with Las Vegas also set to play the (zombie) Chiefs in Week 18. The Browns seem destined to pick in the top two in the 2026 NFL draft at this point, as long as they lose their final two games.

Week 17: NFL likely rooting for Browns over Steelers; DK Metcalf suspension incoming?

gettyimages-1789739245.jpg

It has come to this. The Cleveland Browns are facing off with the Pittsburgh Steelers at home off the shores of Lake Erie in Week 17. The Browns only have 2026 NFL draft order rooting goals, Myles Garrett’s chase of the single-season sack record, and a chance to play spoiler against their longstanding rival. Even the most draft-focused Cleveland fan cannot find themselves hoping out loud that their team loses to the Steelers.

For one of the first times ever, Browns fans and “the NFL” might have the same rooting interest. For the longest time, it has seemed like the league has been against Cleveland’s team, especially when playing Pittsburgh or the Baltimore Ravens. In Week 17, the NFL needs the Browns to beat the Steelers.

Why? To make Week 18 matter in the AFC North race.

Pittsburgh currently holds a two-game lead over Baltimore for the division, but the two teams play each other in Week 18. If the Steelers lose to the Browns and the Ravens can knock off the Green Bay Packers on the road in Week 17, the Week 18 matchup would decide the AFC North crown. A meaningful game that is likely destined for a primetime spot.

If Pittsburgh beats Cleveland or Baltimore loses to Green Bay, neither of the Week 18 matchups in the AFC North will matter. A big game that would have big ratings could hang in the balance.

To add intrigue to the Browns versus Steelers matchup, beyond Garrett’s record pursuit, is whether or not the NFL will suspend WR DK Metcalf for his actions in Week 16:

ANOTHER ANGLE OF THE DK METCALF PUNCH TO A FAN🥶 pic.twitter.com/q3fI31MwRO

— CulturePlaybookX (@CulturePlaybook) December 22, 2025

Many are speculating that Metcalf will not only miss Week 17 in Cleveland but could be suspended for multiple games for those actions. That it could be in the NFL’s ratings interest for the Steelers to lose in Week 17 only adds intrigue to their decision on Pittsburgh’s star receiver.

The NFL might finally be “on the Browns’ side” in Week 17, only if you believe in league-level conspiracies.

In a lost season, these 2 rookies continue to shine for the Browns

gettyimages-2246999232.jpg

The Cleveland Browns have not had much go right during the 2025 season.

The wide receivers continue to be non-existent, with Jerry Jeudy leading the group with 43 receptions, while Cedric Tillman, Isaiah Bond, Jamari Thrash, Malachi Corley, and Gage Larvadain have combined for just 60 more.

The run game, which had stalled since the game against the Las Vegas Raiders, finally caught a break on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills and their No. 30-ranked run defense, only to see running back Quinshon Judkins go down with a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula.

The quarterback situation has gone from bad with Dillon Gabriel to … just as bad with Shedeur Sanders, whose minus-0.24 EPA/dropback is the lowest of any quarterback since TruMedia began tracking such things in 2000, according to The Athletic. (Hey, don’t shoot the messenger here!)

The defense has shown the strain of having to carry the water for the woeful offense, especially when it comes to defending the run. In the past three games, the Browns have allowed seven rushing touchdowns and 490 rushing yards.

There are two bright spots, however, in addition to defensive end Myles Garrett and his pursuit of the NFL record for sacks in a single season, that need to be celebrated: tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and linebacker Carson Schwesinger.

A few Harold Fannin Jr. plays, including the first catch that broke the franchise single-season reception record for a #Browns rookie and the opening drive touchdown that came a few snaps later. pic.twitter.com/fi01Y0d01z

— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) December 22, 2025

Fannin had a pair of touchdowns on Sunday against the Bills, one rushing and one receiving, and leads the Browns in receptions (70), receiving yards (701), and receiving touchdowns (5). His 70 receptions are now the franchise record for catches by a rookie, surpassing Kevin Johnson’s 66 receptions in 1999.

In the five games since Sanders took over the starting quarterback role, Fannin has averaged 5.2 receptions and 55.8 yards per game. If he matches those the numbers the rest of the season, he would finish with 80 receptions, tied for No. 11 with Jordan Cameron and Braylon Edwards for most in a season by a Browns player, and 812 yards, which will just barely inside the franchise’s Top 50 list, would still represent a nice rookie season.

shedeur this, shedeur that, I'm still thinking about Carson Schwesinger shutting Ashton Jeanty's water off in space pic.twitter.com/PyNtKoyef6

— Jordan Zirm (@JordanZirm) November 24, 2025

As for Schwesinger, he finished Sunday’s game with 12 tackles, his sixth consecutive game with double-digits in tackles, tying him with Luke Kuechly of the Carolina Panthers for the longest streak by a rookie since 2000.

Schwesinger, who leads all rookies in tackles (148) and tackles for loss (11.5), now has seven games with at least 10 tackles, tied for the fifth-most by a rookie since 2000. And in a season where injuries have hit the Browns hard, Schwesinger has been on the field for 96 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.

Add it up, and it is clear to see why Schwesinger is the favorite to win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

It has been another lost season for the Browns, but at least they have been able to count on their productive rookie duo of Fannin and Schwesinger to shine a bit of light on the darkness.

Browns defense torched early, then oddly shuts Buffalo down in Week 16 vs Bills

gettyimages-2253167181.jpg

The Cleveland Browns’ defense allowed 209 yards of offense on the first three drives, all of which results in touchdowns for Buffalo. It was as bad as a defense could look, and I thought it would continue that way the rest of the game. However, over the Bills’ next seven drives, they totaled a combined 50 yards of offense, a pretty stunning turnaround that allowed Cleveland to stay in the game.

Below, we analyze the snap counts and stats on defense for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 16 game against the Buffalo Bills.

  • For once, we have what was considered a rather pedestrian game for Myles Garrett. He did get credit for the half sack where Josh Allen backpedaled and fell down near the end zone. Buffalo didn’t throw the ball very much, and when they did, it was often quick release passes out to the right side. Garrett was the seventh-highest graded player on defense per PFF, grading out to a 63.8.
  • On the plus side, Mason Graham was the second-highest graded player on defense, per PFF, grading out to a 74.5. He and Shelby Harris, along with Maurice Hurst with fewer snaps, were the three highest-graded players on defense, which might say something about Buffalo’s interior offensive line.

  • It was another solid week for Carson Schwesinger, who logged 10+ tackles and had the one true sack on Allen. We still know nothing about the future of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, but that would be awesome imagining both of those guys in the lineup together. Schwesinger was the fourth-highest graded player on defense, grading out to a 71.5.
  • Jerome Baker saw more snaps this week, but was the team’s lowest-graded defender, per PFF, grading out to a 28.8, with his run defense and coverage suffering.

By PFF standards, he’s often on the polar opposite end of things: sometimes really good, and other times really bad. This week, he was the team’s second-lowest graded defender, grading out to a 35.4 overall, with poor run defense, tackling, and coverage.

Browns make important Deshaun Watson decision

imagn-27666876.jpg

For many Cleveland Browns fans, the beginning of the end for the current roster came when the team traded for QB Deshaun Watson and gave him a huge guaranteed contract. Since that move in the 2022 offseason, Watson has played in just 19 games with a record of 9-10, 61% completion percentage, 3,365 yards, 19 TDs and 12 INTs.

Watson was designated to return from injured reserve at the beginning of December with a chance to play in the last few games of the season, especially if Shedeur Sanders struggled. With the 21-day deadline looming, reports came out that Cleveland planned to keep Watson around for the 2026 season, valuing his mentorship.

On Tuesday, before the Browns Week 17 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, HC Kevin Stefanski announced that Watson would not join the team’s roster and would remain on the reserve list for the rest of the 2025 season:

That means that Watson will not add any stats to the above totals, leaving his four-year journey with the Browns lacking over two and a half years’ worth of games.

Steelers primed to ruin Browns 2026 draft plans

gettyimages-2240593922.jpg

The Cleveland Browns close out the home portion of the 2025 regular season on Sunday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Most years, the home game against Pittsburgh is a highlight, as even in the worst of times, the Browns tend to play the Steelers tough at home, having won five of the last six meetings at Huntington Bank Field. But, this year, the game may take on more of the feeling of a funeral.

The Browns are closing out yet another disappointing season, with their ninth year of double-digit losses under the 14-year ownership of Jimmy and Dee Haslam, while the Steelers are on the brink of their 12th playoff season under head coach Mike Tomlin.

The afternoon could also be the last time the home fans see some familiar faces in a Cleveland uniform, with the uncertainty surrounding veterans like Joel Bitonio, Wyatt Teller, and David Njoku. (At least there is no fear of seeing Deshaun Watson on the field.)

Watching the losses pile up each week has not been fun, but with just two games to go, the Browns may as well do everything they can to ensure a high first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. Cleveland enters the weekend in control of the No. 3 overall selection and still has a 24.4 percent chance of earning the No. 1 overall selection.

The Giants odds of landing the No. 1 in next year's draft skyrocketed Sunday. They're now at 36.1% to land the top pick, per ESPN Analytics.

Up from 16% last week and 10% week prior. Thank the Titans.

— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) December 22, 2025

While the Steelers are focused on the playoffs, an added bonus, at least in their eyes, would come from hurting Cleveland’s draft position, which could come about from two situations completely out of Cleveland’s control.

The first came on Tuesday when the NFL upheld the two-game suspension of Pittsburgh wide receiver DK Metcalf for his altercation with a fan during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Metcalf is second on the Steelers in receptions (5), and first in receiving yards (850) and receiving touchdowns (6), so his absence makes it a little easier on Cleveland’s secondary.

The second won’t be known until late Saturday night. If the Baltimore Ravens lose to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, the Steelers will wake up Sunday morning as champions of the AFC North Division.

In that scenario, the Steelers could choose to sit many of their starters and give the Browns an easier path to victory. Even if Pittsburgh wins out, they would finish with 11 wins but would still be locked in as the No. 4 seed as long as the Jacksonville Jaguars win one more game.

Would the Steelers make the decision Sunday morning to sit out their starters and treat the game as a glorified scrimmage? And, if they do, would that still be enough for the Browns to pull out a win?

We are still a few days away from finding out, but would anyone be all that surprised if the Browns stumble their way into a victory and have their draft position hurt at the hands of the Steelers?

If that happens, there will be more than a few people channeling their inner Ralphie and uttering, “Oh, fudge!”

NFL Christmas Day games: 2 matchups important for Browns NFL draft order goals

imagn-27608789.jpg

With two weeks left in the 2025 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns are in the “Race to the Bottom” with a strong chance at selecting with one of the first two picks in the 2026 NFL draft order. In Week 17, the Pittsburgh Steelers could “ruin” the Browns chances for one of those top picks, and the NFL could have a desire for a big upset to keep the AFC North race wide open.

The NFL decided to give football fans some gifts on the Christmas Day schedule, but, like a kid growing out of a gift that was bought months ago, the outcome is less favorable. Of the six teams playing on Christmas, only the Detroit Lions are still fighting for a playoff spot. The Denver Broncos have secured a postseason bid and are still playing for seeding.

The matchups on Thursday will be full of backup quarterbacks with starters Patrick Mahomes, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy missing the games for their teams.

For the Browns rooting guide, two games matter but for different reasons:

  • Broncos over Chiefs – With Cleveland having the Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick, Browns fans do not want the Jags to have a chance for the top overall seed in the AFC, which would push that selection down a few spots automatically
  • Commanders over Cowboys – Washington already has their fourth victory this year, but Cleveland has a chance to win both of their last two games. Another Commanders victory, even if it seems highly unlikely, will push another team further away in the standings

Neither game is as important as the games that will be played on Sunday. We will bring you another 2026 NFL draft order rooting guide for the weekend’s matchups.

6 takeaways from Cleveland’s coordinators about the Steelers

gettyimages-2251383029.jpg

The Cleveland Browns are home for the final time in 2025 on Sunday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Huntington Bank Field.

Cleveland enters the contest on a four-game losing streak, while the Steelers could take the field with the AFC North Division title in hand if the Baltimore Ravens lose to the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.

It is setting up to be another dreary afternoon on the shores of Lake Erie, although the Browns have won five of the past six meetings between the teams in Cleveland. Could the Browns have some leftover coal to put in Pittsburgh’s holiday stocking?

On Wednesday, Cleveland’s coordinators held their weekly meeting with the media, and here are the key takeaways from what they had to say about the upcoming game against the Steelers.

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz

The Browns have struggled against the run the past three weeks, allowing 490 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. This week presents another challenge with the way Pittsburgh utilizes its running backs, according to Schwartz:

“It’s not just Jaylen Warren; Kenneth Gainwell’s really increased his role since the first time we’ve played, not just in the run game, but in the passing game. And one of the things Pittsburgh does with Aaron Rodgers is they throw a lot of short RPOs, quick passes, little option routes to the running back, which are high percentage plays that are sort of an extension of the running game. And both of those guys are really good at runs after the catch. A lot of short throws, a lot of quick throws, and run after the catch, and both Warren and Gainwell give those guys a little bit of a different style.

“They’ll use both of them, so we got to know which guy is out there, and then also just really work hard for tackling and allowing no run after contact, but also no run after the catch.”

There is a possibility, even if it is a small one, that the Steelers may rest some of their starters if they have clinched the AFC North Division title because of a loss by the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. But the defense is not focusing on that possibility, according to Schwartz:

“We always get ready for backup players and backup quarterbacks, that’s part of our preparation anyway, knowing the skill sets of everybody that’s on the field. So, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. We concentrate a little bit more on us and what our game plan is and how we’re going to play. And if that’s something they choose to do, then we’ll adjust accordingly.”

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders has struggled the past two weeks as the Browns have faced better defenses. Against Pittsburgh, giving Sanders a clean pocket to work in will be vital, according to Rees:

“It starts with our ability to protect, which I thought our protection Sunday was excellent for the majority of the game. There are a lot of times we’re in our actions, and we have plenty of time back there. You look at (the Steelers), who they’ve been over the past however many years, it starts for them up front. So, it needs to start with us up front. Our ability to protect the passer is going to be critical.

“But protection against this group is everybody. It’s getting open on time; it’s playing on time. It’s everybody that’s part of the core being in protection. So that will allow us to have a chance in the passing game.”

The Browns will be without leading rusher Quinshon Judkins as he suffered a season-ending injury against the Bills. But Rees has confidence in Raheim Sanders and Trayveon Williams after seeing them in action against Buffalo:

“Q’s a great player, we’re going to miss him, and he’s provided a lot for us. We have trust in the group we have. We’re going to continue to find their strengths, try to highlight those, and we’ll see how this week goes with the other backs and getting them back here.

“(Raheim and Trayveon) came in that second half and did a really nice job for us and (picked up some) critical third down conversions. We got a nine-yard run, we got an eight-yard run from the nine-yard line. Like really big moments, you know, for those guy,s and they were well prepared.”

Special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone

Another week, another miscue on special teams as a botched snap on a field goal attempt at the end of the first half denied the Browns three points. Those are the type of plays the Browns need to eliminate, according to Ventrone:

“Kind of short on the ball, but I do think that obviously both of those guys (long snapper Rex Sunahara and punter Corey Bojorquez) own it. We need to be able to execute that. I think Corey can still get the ball down (in that situation). He would tell you the same thing. So just gotta eliminate bad football like that.”

Even with a down year, starting safety Grant Delpit was named a Pro Bowl alternate at special teams this week. Delpit’s willingness to play on special teams is, well, special, according to Ventrone:

“I think two things to know from that are, obviously, he’s a starter that’s willing to do whatever it takes for our team. So he’s played on two units, you know, most of the season for us. We’ve created two turnovers, and he’s been a part of both of them. So obviously, the fumble against Miami and then the recovered fumble against Baltimore here at home. He does everything I ask him to do, and he’s a great teammate, a great player.”

The Browns and the Steelers kick off on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland. Stay tuned to Dawgs By Nature for coverage throughout the weekend and all day on Sunday.

2026 NFL draft order tanking: Raiders, Giants rule out key players for Week 17 matchup

1360546325.jpg

The Cleveland Browns future could depend on what happens in Week 17 of the 2025 NFL season. The Pittsburgh Steelers may have nothing to play for when the two AFC North teams matchup, while the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants, two teams ahead of the Browns in the 2026 NFL draft order currently, play each other in a tank-off as well.

In the “Race to the Bottom” of the 2025 NFL standings, the top of the upcoming NFL draft is up in the air. After facing each other, the Raiders take on the zombie (missing a ton of key players) Kansas City Chiefs, while the Giants will play the Dallas Cowboys.

The best-case scenario that is likely for Cleveland is the Giants winning in Week 17 and the Raiders beating the Chiefs in Week 18. It seems like neither New York nor Las Vegas is interested in winning this week, with the Raiders going against DE Maxx Crosby’s wishes to play, ruling him out after he said this, leading to him leaving the team facility:

This was Maxx Crosby earlier this week on the No. 1 overall pick being on the line vs. the Giants on Sunday:

“Yeah, I don’t give a sh*t about the pick. I don’t play for that. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world.”

pic.twitter.com/W6aJJwUFan https://t.co/Ujs1zIDKT2

— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 26, 2025

Las Vegas placed star TE Brock Bowers on injured reserve this week as well.

Not to be outdone, the Giants ruled out OT Andrew Thomas, along with a number of other players, and listed others as questionable:

While Week 17’s matchup between the Browns vs Steelers will be the most important game for Cleveland’s 2026 NFL draft order, the tank-off between the Raiders and Giants will be a must-see.

Browns make roster move at QB position for Week 17 vs Steelers

gettyimages-2230496098.jpg

The Cleveland Browns will have a better idea of what kind of fight the Pittsburgh Steelers will put up in Week 17 when Saturday’s slate of games concludes. Browns fans will also be very focused on the tank-off matchup between the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders, as the 2026 NFL draft order is a primary focus for the team’s future.

Cleveland is likely to select a quarterback early in next year’s draft unless QB Shedeur Sanders lights it up in the final two weeks. The Browns will have to protect the young quarterback and put him in positions to be successful in order for that to happen.

If Cleveland is unable to protect Sanders and he needs to depart the game, Bailey Zappe, not Dillon Gabriel, is likely to replace him versus the Steelers. Gabriel’s shoulder injury, popping up Friday, led the Browns to elevate Zappe, along with TE Sal Cannella, for Sunday’s Week 17 matchup.

TE David Njoku has already been ruled out for the game, while rookie sensation TE Harold Fannin Jr. was also injured on Friday and is questionable for the game, which explains Cannella’s elevation.
