News Blackhawks Team Notes

Ovechkin’s Night, Moore on the Board, Reichel Sits, Mean Harding, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Last night the Blackhawks hung around against a Capitals team that might win the Presidents Trophy this year. A couple nights after being ten seconds from beating a Colorado Avalanche team that is a legit Stanley Cup contender. Does it suck that these games are ending up in losses? Sure. Absolutely. But the fact is the lineup the Blackhawks are putting on the ice probably has the least collective NHL experience in the entire league right now — and that’s with Pat Maroon and Nick Foligno. Learning to compete in the NHL can be the hardest part for some teams. That doesn’t necessarily appear to be the Blackhawks’ issue right now. They’ve moved on to learning how to win/finish games.

  • I want to say it again this morning because it bears repeating: Alex Ovechkin telling his head coach point blank “no” when asked if he wanted to break the record into an empty net at home is why he’s an all-time great. Knowing the Caps’ next game is on the road, he could have easily tapped in. He didn’t. That gets a ton of respect from me.
  • After a tough loss last night, the Blackhawks stayed on the ice and paid their respects to Ovechkin after he tied the record. Class move.
Respect. pic.twitter.com/9Y8D9heRJA

  • Frank Nazar was the Blackhawks’ best forward last night. Again.
  • Lukas Reichel was a healthy scratch on Friday because he missed a team meeting before the morning skate, according to interim head coach Anders Sorensen. So the young man who has struggled to stay out of the dog house based on production oversleeps on one of the last road trips of the season. I hope he’s only renting in Chicago…
  • On Wednesday night, the line of Reichel with Landon Slaggert and Oliver Moore had a 2-11 CORSI For ratio and a 1-5 shots on goal ratio at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick). Last night, Philipp Kurashev got Reichel’s spot with the same two young forwards. He scored a goal and both Slaggert and Moore had two assists in the game. Hmm…

  • Good read here from Ben Pope on the early days of Moore’s professional career. As I noted many, many times throughout the season as he moved up and down the lineup at Minnesota, the Gophers were using him in situations to help develop his complete game. I would absolutely love it if he paid incredibly close attention to Ilya Mikheyev as a role model. Get the puck, keep the puck and make things happen at an extremely high speed.

Oliver Moore's production at Minnesota this season wasn't spectacular, but he believes he quietly improved a lot.

He shifted his mentality to tell himself, "I’m going to hold onto this puck, and no one is going to knock me off of it."

  • Good read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic on newly signed defenseman Taige Harding. Y’all have been begging for there to be some big nasty in the organization and I’ve been trying to tell ya he’s precisely that. Now he’s in Rockford, and we might get to see more of it in training camp finally this fall.

“He was a mean son of a b—- all year.”

Newly-signed Blackhawks prospect Taige Harding could bring something different to the defense.

  • Jack Pridham and Kitchener hosted Flint and sent them home for the summer. Pridham did not have a point in a 2-1 elimination win for the Rangers.
  • Windsor hosted Sault Ste. Marie and eliminated the Greyhounds with an 8-4 win. AJ Spellacy was a scratch again. We’ll see if he’s available to start the next round.
  • We’ve got two playoff games in the OHL on the slate tonight. Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford host North Bay. And Martin Misiak, Ty Henry and Erie visit Saginaw.
  • Congrats, Kaner.

Blackhawks Prospects Lardis, Mišiak BOTH Produce Hat Tricks in OHL Playoffs

Hey, it’s Saturday night and the NCAA’s Final Four is on television. But two Blackhawks prospects in the OHL playoffs had enormous performances that deserve your attention.

Blackhawks prospects Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford hosted North Bay, and Lardis did Lardis things. Three of those things, specifically.

The OHL’s record-setting goal leader had a hat trick. Check the move on his second goal, where he goes between his own legs to get the shot off! Vanacker had an assist on the first goal. Brantford’s win ends the series and the Bulldogs advance.

Martin Mišiak Doubles the Fun

Blackhawks prospects Martin Mišiak, Ty Henry and Erie visited Saginaw and Misiak did… dare I say… Lardis things? Misiak also had a hat trick (and an assist for a four-point night) to lead Erie to a series-clinching win as well.

Moore’s Impact, Dach Not Close, Kantserov, OHL Stars, Söderström Coming? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Because the first few days of being a professional athlete haven’t been quite crazy enough for Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel, their gauntlet will go from Nathan MacKinnon on Wednesday night to Alex Ovechkin making history on Friday night to… an early evening date with Sidney Crosby on Sunday. Talk about “welcome to the NHL” moments stacking up in three of their first four games! I loved this comment from Moore on Saturday when asked about being part of that history — while having his first career multi-point NHL game get massively overshadowed.

Oliver Moore now has one of the most unique "First NHL Point" stories ever. (And second point, too.)

"That was a surreal game. That was absurd."

"He's the greatest goal-scorer of all time…so I was happy for him, to be honest with you. It was really cool to see."

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 5, 2025
  • Here’s more from… Moore… about the Blackhawks’ roster and, again, it being about learning to win as much as anything for the young players right now. (Shoutout to Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune for tweeting the video.)
“We have all the pieces, it feels. … But winning games is definitely a mental battle, and you have to be mentally focused all the time.”

  • The “update” we got on Saturday on Colton Dach isn’t exactly ideal. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen said Dach “isn’t close” to returning from his hyperextended left elbow. Including today, there are nine days left in the regular season.
  • According to a report from Jennifer Engstrom of Swedish outlet Expressen on Saturday, there is buzz that right-handed defenseman Victor Söderström will join the Blackhawks next year. Söderström reportedly won the Börje Salming Trophy as the the top defenseman in the Swedish Hockey League. His rights were acquired from Utah at the trade deadline. He recorded 37 points in 49 regular-season games for Brynäs. He’s listed at 6-0 and 196 pounds, so we’ll have to wait and see if/how he fits on a right side that appears to have Rinzel, Artyom Levshunov and Connor Murphy in the mix to start next season.
  • And now an update from Russia courtesy Scott Powers. Roman Kanteserov‘s season has come to a close. It was a good one. He’ll be back in Russia again next year.

Metallurg & Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov were eliminated from the KHL playoffs today after winning the Gagarin Cup last year.

He had two assists in six playoff games and 13 goals and 25 assists in 47 regular-season games. He has one more year on his KHL contract.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) April 5, 2025
  • The two teams in the OHL playoffs with multiple Blackhawks prospects — Erie (Martin Mišiak, Ty Henry) and Brantford (Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker) — both advanced to the second round of the playoffs with huge wins last night. And they did it because BOTH Mišiak and Lardis had a hat trick last night!
  • Mišiak now has 7 goals and 5 assists for 12 points in five playoff games this spring. Lardis also has 7 goals with 2 assists for 9 points in his five playoff games. They’re tied for second in the entire OHL playoffs in goal scoring.
  • I went ahead and put those six clips out last night. ICYMI here’s the link:

  • We’ll (hopefully) get a matchup of Blackhawks prospects in the second round of the OHL playoffs beginning Thursday. Jack Pridham and Kitchener will face AJ Spellacy and Windsor. Spellacy has missed the last two games because of an upper-body injury.

Blackhawks 3, Penguins 1 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

I would have a hard time describing the opening 20 minutes of this game as anything better than mediocre. The best scoring chance of the first period for either team came for the Blackhawks on a breakaway for Landon Slaggert that got denied on the doorstep. Pittsburgh had a few good looks but either shot it high/wide/whiffed completely.

The second period was equally depressing for the top five prospects in the 2025 NHL Draft for about 17 minutes until the Blackhawks had to kill the first penalty of the game. Not only did they kill it, but a short-handed goal gave the Hawks a lead! They took that one-goal lead to the room, but had 75 seconds left to kill on a second penalty to open the third.

The Penguins started to put more pressure on the Blackhawks and it felt like the dam might break at some point, but it didn’t. Ryan Donato created a breakaway for himself to end an extended period in the wrong zone that didn’t end with a goal, but the Blackhawks flipped the ice. Moments later, Connor Bedard made a nice pass to Ilya Mikheyev who hit the burners and scored a huge next goal to give the Blackhawks a two-goal lead. Unfortunately, the Penguins ended the shutout bid with a power play goal inside the final six minutes of regulation.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

Nazar got the assignment of skating against Evgeni Malkin’s line and was on the ice for zero (0) Blackhawks shots on net to 7 for the Penguins in the first period. At the end of two periods, Nazar had a team-leading three shots on net, one blocked shot, one hit and the short-handed goal to give Chicago the lead. And it was the first shorty of Nazar’s career. Once again, he was doing it all for the Blackhawks.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) April 6, 2025

Star 2: Sam Rinzel

Thru two periods, Rinzel led all Blackhawks in ice time at 14:36 during which he was credited with two shots on net, one hit and one blocked shots. There were a couple times where he used his speed and length to break up would-be rushes for the Penguins during the second period where things started to look like they might go sideways as well. Oh, and he was drawing the Sidney Crosby line on most shifts (Rinzel spent 6:28 on the ice at 5-on-5 against Crosby in the first two periods). He picked up his first career NHL point on Mikheyev’s goal in the third period.

Star 3: Ilya Mikheyev

Mikheyev scoring his 19th goal of the season when the Blackhawks really needed the next score. Mikheyev scored his 20th into the empty net. He was great the entire night.

Key Takeaways

  • Holy **** the Penguins are terrible. And they have at least three future Hall of Famers on their roster…
  • Donato and Spencer Knight could have easily been stars in this game as well. They were both really good, with Donato’s defensive play flipping the ice in the third. Knight made some huge saves whtn the Blackhawks needed them.
  • The Blackhawks were out-shot 8-6 in the first period. They won three of ten faceoffs. No Chicago skater was credited with more than one shot on net.
  • At the end of the second period, the Blackhawks had won 9 of 26 faceoffs (35 percent).
  • I thought this was a much better, more confident Kevin Korchinski tonight. He was skating with the puck better and using his reach to get the puck out of trouble. Give me more of that.
  • Wyatt Kaiser (0.73) and Artyom Levshunov (0.61) had the highest expected Goals For rate thru two periods at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick). Joe Veleno (0.60) was the best among Blackhawks forwards.

Connor Bedard Made Some More History on Sunday Night

On Sunday night, Connor Bedard made a little history that got lost in the shuffle with between Alex Ovechkin breaking the record and the Blackhawks beating the Penguins. He became the 11th player — third active — in NHL history to have multiple 60-point seasons as a teenager.

Here’s the full list of players who recorded multiple 60-point seasons as a teenager in NHL history:

  • Patrik Laine – 2016-17 & 2017-18
  • Sidney Crosby – 2005-06 & 2006-07
  • Jimmy Carson – 1986-87 &1987-88
  • Steve Yzerman – 1983-84 & 1984-85
  • Brian Bellows – 1982-83 & 1983-84
  • Phil Housley – 1982-83 & 1984-85
  • Bobby Carpenter – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Dale Hawerchuk – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Ron Francis – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Wayne Gretzky – 1979-80 & 1980-81

And, with his assist on Ilya Mikheyev‘s game-winning goal, Bedard became just the sixth active player to record a 40-assist season as a teenager. He joined Crosby (84 in 2006-07 & 63 in 2005-06), Patrick Kane (51 in 2007-08), Clayton Keller (42 in 2017-18), Mitch Marner (42 in 2016-17) and Anze Kopitar (41 in 2006-07). Pretty good company on both lists!

2025 NHL Mock Draft: Early April First Round Projections

We’re now into the final ten days of the 2024-25 NHL regular season. Teams are clinching playoff berths and getting eliminated every day. For some teams, the hope of a run for a championship is alive and well. For others, the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery can’t come soon enough (it’s reportedly going to be the first week of May, Blackhawks fans).

As we inch closer to the draft order/lottery odds being finalized for the non-playoff teams, let’s take one last run at the first round with an updated mock draft. There are a plenty of teams with multiple picks in the first round this year and one specifically that is dangerously close to either moving or not moving.

Here’s our latest run at how the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft might play out this summer.

2025 NHL Mock Draft — First Round

1. San Jose Sharks — Matthew Schaefer, LHD
6-2, 183
Shoots: Left

Schaefer is the consensus No. 1 prospect in the 2025 class, and he would be a great addition to the Sharks’ pipeline. If their top four includes Schaefer and Sam Dickinson, San Jose’s second pick in the first round last year, they’re in great shape on the back end. The Sharks are one of the teams that owns multiple picks in the first round this year.

2. Chicago BlackhawksMichael Misa, C/LW
6-1, 184
Shoots: Left

Since our last mock draft, the Blackhawks have signed Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel and inserted them into the NHL lineup. And the returns have been good early in their professional careers. Adding Moore to a young forward group with Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar and Landon Slaggert is a solid foundation already in the NHL. With a truckload of cap space and a healthy number of draft picks again this year, the Blackhawks adding a potential top-line center with dynamic playmaking ability and good size in Misa feels like a no-brainer.

3. Nashville Predators — James Hagens, C
5-11, 170
Shoots: Left

Barry Trotz has long coveted top centers, and he can grab one with Hagens available here in our mock draft. Hagens has had a very good freshman collegiate season. The Preds are one of the teams with a truckload of picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, so get used to seeing them in our mock draft.

4. Boston Bruins — Porter Martone, RW
6-3, 208
Shoots: Right

Boston dumped at the deadline and it appears to be working perfectly. They’re now in the top four in the lottery, which puts them in position to grab a difference maker who could be in Boston soon. Martone is a big forward who plays with an edge — something the Bruins could use. If you can’t sign a Tkachuk, draft the next best thing?

5. Philadelphia Flyers — Anton Frondell, C
6-0, 196
Shoots: Right

Philly has 11 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, including seven in the first two rounds — so they’re going to be frequently listed in this mock draft. Frondell looks like a lock to be a top-five pick at this point and would be a great fit with Matvei Michkov and some of their other young forwards.

6. Seattle Kraken — Caleb Desnoyers, C
6-1, 178
Shoots: Left

Desnoyers has been climbing rankings over the past couple months and feels like he’s establishing himself as the top prospect in the next tier after the top four are off the board. Seattle is still building organizational depth and this would be a terrific pick.

7. Pittsburgh Penguin — Roger McQueen, C
6-5, 197
Shoots: Right

The Penguins now have 12 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, so they’ll be busy trying to retool around Sidney Crosby so they aren’t picking in the top ten frequently in the final years of his career. McQueen missed most of this season because of injury but the comps to Evgeni Malkin (pun intended, but largely because of his size) could make this an easy call for Pittsburgh.

8. Buffalo Sabres — Victor Eklund, RW
5-11, 161
Shoots: Right

Eklund is a solid all-around forward who could go anywhere between 7-14. With Buffalo sliding out of the top five, Eklund would be a really good value for them at this point in our mock draft. There might be more changes to the mix in Buffalo this summer, though. So stay tuned.

9. Anaheim Ducks — Radim Mrtka, RHD
6-6, 207
Shoots: Right

I’ve been on Mrtka to Anaheim with them picking anywhere between 5 and 12 thus far. They need a big right-shot defenseman and he does that. This is a good spot for him in the draft, too.

10. Columbus Blue Jackets — Jackson Smith, LHD
6-3, 195
Shoots: Left

The Blue Jackets are likely disappointed their playoff dreams didn’t fully materialize this year but their young forwards are showing a lot of promise. Smith is a really good defense prospect who could impact their blue line soon.

11. New York Islanders — Jake O’Brien, C
6-2, 172
Shoots: Right

O’Brien is one of the helium prospects in this draft who has really elevated his stock with a strong performance on a stacked Brantford team (including a couple Blackhawks prospects). He has ideal size for an Eastern Conference team looking to add down the middle, and the Isles need all the offensive help they can get.

12. New York Rangers* — Kashawn Aitcheson, LHD
6-1, 196
Shoots: Left

This pick is one to watch in the final games of the regular season. The Rangers traded this pick to Vancouver in the JT Miller deal, and it was subsequently flipped to the Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson trade. But it’s top-13 protected — and the Rangers are currently selecting 12th overall. If the Rangers make this pick, Aitcheson may be viewed as an eventual replacement for K’Andre Miller on the left side of their blue line.

13. Detroit Red Wings — Carter Bear, LW
6-0, 179
Shoots: Left

Bear has been a hot name in draft rankings since the start of the calendar year. He has decent size and has a game that scouts love. Detroit is going to be a team to watch this summer with another playoff miss this season. They have some good young pieces, but at some point the Yzerplan needs to get them into the postseason.

14. Utah Hockey Club — Cameron Reid, LHD
6-0, 175
Shoots: Left

Utah has lots of needs, but their forward group is pretty good and young right now. Reid looks like a future power play quarterback who can skate and get the puck on/in the net frequently.

15. Vancouver Canucks — Malcolm Spence, LW
6-1, 203
Shoots: Left

The Canucks have been a hot mess all season and need to restock their forward group; they might lose Brock Boeser to free agency this summer. Spence is a polarizing prospect who could go earlier than this and might slide into the 20s as well. This feels like a nice spot for him and a good pick for the Canucks.

16. Montreal Canadiens — Justin Carbonneau, RW
6-1, 191
Shoots: Right

Some Guy named Carbonneau in Montreal would stir all of the nostalgia for Habs fans, but this would be a nice landing spot for him in our mock draft. He’s a good winger with a lot of skill who could help Montreal’s collection of skaters.

17. Montreal Canadiens (from CGY) — Logan Hensler, RHD
6-2, 192
Shoots: Right

With consecutive picks, the Habs can get creative. Hensler is the second right-handed defenseman on most boards and has solid size to help their blue line eventually. Splitting their picks between a forward and defense makes sense.

18. Calgary Flames (from NJ) — Lynden Lakovic, LW
6-4 , 190
Shoots: Left

The Flames landing Lakovic here would be tremendous value; he could do somewhere in the 11-14 range as well. He has good size and can move on the wing. In a Western Conference that’s getting bigger, the Flames getting a player like this here is a nice pick.

19. Columbus Blue Jackets (from MIN) — Brady Martin, C
6-0, 178
Shoots: Right

The Blue Jackets taking a center with decent size feels like a luxury pick, but Martin would be good value for them at this point in our mock draft. I have the Blue Jackets going with a defenseman earlier in this mock draft, so a forward here makes sense.

20. Ottawa Senators — Cameron Schmidt, RW
5-8, 152
Shoots: Right

Schmidt is small but he can score, which is why his name comes up into the early teens in some mock drafts. Ottawa has plenty of size up front and could us a sniper; they tried it with Alex DeBrincat but that didn’t work. Maybe they’ll view Schmidt as that guy.

21. St. Louis Blues — Joshua Ravensbergen, G
6-5, 195

St. Louis is the hottest team in the NHL and is sprinting into the playoffs. There are lots of areas they could address here, but an eventual replacement for Jordan Binnington makes a lot of sense. Ravensbergen is the only goalie with a first-round grade and this would be a good fit for both the payer and the organization.

22. Calgary Flames (from FLA) — Cole Reschny, C
5-10, 187
Shoots: Left

Calgary is stockpiling assets and Reschny is a good player who’s been up and down in a lot of prospect rankings since the start of the calendar year. There seems to be buzz now that he’s climbing again and could wind up coming off the board in this range.

23. Philadelphia Flyers (from EDM) — Blake Fiddler, RHD
6-4, 207
Shoots: Right

The son of Vernon Fiddler is a big right-shot defenseman who would be a nice addition to the the Flyers’ blue line. His size makes him feel like an old school Flyers player and makes sense at this point in our mock draft.

24. Nashville Predators (from TB) — Cullen Potter, C
5-9, 168
Shoots: Left

It’s going to be an interesting summer in Nashville after a shockingly bad regular season following a summer in which Trotz went for it in free agency. Potter is a great skater who’s playing college hockey this season. He likely projects as a wing because of his size. More offense in Nashville.

25. Philadelphia Flyers (from COL) — Braeden Cootes, C
6-0, 183
Shoots: Right

Another pick for the Flyers is really good value if Cootes is still available at this point in the draft. He could wind up at center or on the wing as a pro and would be a nice addition with their third pick in the first round of our mock draft.

26. Carolina Hurricanes — William Moore, C
6-2, 161
Shoots: Left

Carolina has tried to add size up front via trade the last two years, but both Jake Guentzel and Mikko Rantanen haven’t wanted to sign there. Moore has good size for a center prospect and could help them accomplish that goal thru the draft.

27. Los Angeles Kings — Ben Kindel, C
5-10, 176
Shoots: Left

The Kings are looking to add quality to their system and Kindel would be a nice value pick for their pipeline at this point in the first round. He isn’t the biggest prospect on the board but he’s likely the best available.

28. Chicago Blackhawks (from TOR) — Jack Nesbitt, C
6-4, 185
Shoots: Left

The Blackhawks are getting plenty of looks at Nesbitt this season; he plays with AJ Spellacy in Windsor. Adding another big center would be ideal for the future. Nesbitt has been quietly climbing draft rankings as a nearly point-per-game center in the OHL, and his size makes him a fascinating center to project. Nesbitt has seven points (one goal, six assists) in five games to start his postseason for Windsor this year.

29. Nashville Predators (from VGK) — Ivan Ryabkin, C
6-0, 170
Shoots: Left

Ryabkin left Russia and came over to play in the UHSL this season. His rankings are all over the place, so this might be a good spot for a team to take a shot on him as a luxury pick with big upside — and Nashville having three picks in the first round makes this a valuable lottery ticket for them to use here.

30. San Jose Sharks (from DAL) — Bill Zonnon, LW
6-2, 190
Shoots: Left

The Sharks went with a defenseman at the top of the draft and will be back on the clock with the 33rd pick in the draft, so this is best player available territory for San Jose. Zonnon is a big, physical forward who could complement their existing group of forwards well when he’s ready.

31. Washington Capitals — Henry Brzustewicz, RHD
6-1, 194
Shoots: Right

The Capitals enjoyed the celebration surrounding Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record this weekend, but now the focus shifts to trying to make the magical season end with a parade. Their big roster addition after the deadline has been young forward Ryan Leonard, who scored his first goal against the Blackhawks. They should look to help the future of their blue line here, and Brzustewicz is a nice prospect at this point in the draft.

32. Winnipeg Jets — Jack Murtagh, C
6-0, 185
Shoots: Left

Yes, this would mean Canada’s Stanley Cup drought has come to an end. That in itself would be a huge story. If it is Winnipeg, who were thought to be on the verge of a rebuild just a couple years ago, it would be a magnificent story for the Jets and the league. Murtagh is a solid center prospect with decent size who figures to be in this range in the draft and would be a nice add for the Jets’ system.

Blackhawks at Penguins — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

If this feels redundant, it’s because it is. These two teams played each other on Sunday evening. They’re playing again tonight. Because why face each other in the first 76 games of the year when you can play twice in the final nine days of the regular season? Right?

Injury Report

Chicago Blackhawks

Pittsburgh Penguins

  • Bokondji Imama and PO Joseph are on IR. Tommy Novak is banged-up.

What to Watch For

  • These two teams played each other on Sunday evening and the Blackhawks ended Crosby’s personal point streak. Crosby was minus-three in the game. He won’t be a happy camper tonight.
  • Mikheyev and Nazar presented big problems for Pittsburgh with their speed on Sunday night. Let’s see if they can create and finish more scoring chances tonight.
  • Loving the young defense stepping up against some tough competition lately.

Blackhawks 0, Penguins 5 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

On Sunday night, the Blackhawks kept Sidney Crosby off the board (he was minus-three) and Spencer Knight came within about six minutes of a shutout. They weren’t as fortunate tonight. Kevin Korchinski got clipped for two penalties in the first period (the second of which was soft). Crosby scored six seconds into the second advantage — with 16 seconds remaining in the period — to give Pittsburgh a one-goal lead heading to the first intermission.

After a first period in which the Blackhawks had some decent jump and were creating a few chances, there was… nothing. It appears the Crosby goal took any life out of the room for the visitors because Pittsburgh scored four more unanswered goals against a Blackhawks team that looked like they were ready to pick up some Dunkin at the Boston airport before getting to the hotel later tonight. This was a non-event from the Blackhawks. And poor Knight was basically going it alone for most of the night.

Star 1: Sam Rinzel

Rinzel was easily the most noticeable Blackhawks skater in the first period. He was shooting whenever he got a decent look at the net and came *this close* to his first goal early when his shot went bar down — but stayed out. He was credited with a team-leading four shot attempts and had a 0.81 expected Goals For in the first period. He finished the night with seven credited shot attempts

Star 2: the Bus Driver

Somebody got them to the arena tonight (physically at least). And that somebody has to get them to the hotel/airport after the game. Thus far, they’ve been effective.

Star 3: the Pilot

Somebody has to get the team to Boston for Thursday night.

Key Takeaways

  • The Blackhawks came into this game 7-25-5 on the road this season. That record did not improve.
  • Here are the first period Corsi For numbers for Rinzel and Alex Vlasic from the first period (at 5-on-5 per Natural Stat Trick):
image-10.png

  • If you go back to Sunday night, I pointed out that Frank Nazar had a tough first period against Evgeni Malkin’s line. Basically, they ate his line for an early dinner in the opening 20 minutes. But, as the game progressed, Nazar and his linemates started to figure a few things out. Here’s how Nazar looked at 5-on-5 against Malkin’s line in the first period tonight (again, the line he saw the most):
image-11.png

  • Nazar won 7 of 11 faceoffs in the game. Oliver Moore won 6 of 9 draws. Solid night for the young Blackhawks at the dot.
  • If you’re going to raise your hand and say “Hey, Lukas Reichel just needs an opportunity” there isn’t going to be a ton of energy from me to engage at this point. His numbers thru two periods tonight are just the latest evidence from the prosecution that he might not be a guy. (Corsi For and Shots For numbers from Natural Stat Trick at 5-on-5 thru two periods; full stat line from ESPN.com.) He was the only skater on the roster with nothing but doughnuts in the box score after two periods. He was in uniform and he got shifts… but I’m not sold his alarm went off to wake him up from his afternoon siesta.

Pat Maroon Named the Blackhawks Masterton Trophy Nominee

On Wednesday morning, the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) — of which I am a member — announced the 32 nominees for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The Chicago Blackhawks’ nominee for the 2024-25 season is forward Pat Maroon.

Maroon, 36, is calling it a career when the Blackhawks’ season ends on Tuesday evening in Ottawa. To date, he has appeared in 846 regular-season games (plus another 163 in the postseason).

Originally a sixth-round pick (No. 161 overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft by Philadelphia, Maroon spent most of five seasons in the AHL (plus one with London in the OHL) before finally getting a full-time shot at the NHL with Anaheim in during the 2012-13 season. He went on to become a three-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the most beloved and respected teammates in the league.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually “to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” Local chapters of the PHWA nominate a player from each team and then vote for the winner. The trophy was first awarded following the 1967-68 season.

The only Blackhawks to previously win the Masterton Trophy are Pit Martin (1970) and Bryan Berard (2004).

Demidov is Coming, Chicago Speed, Brodie Buyout Likely, Scouting Harding, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The biggest news in the NHL on Tuesday afternoon came from Russia. Ivan Demidov, the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, was granted his wish to leave the KHL and signed his three-year, entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens. Lots of Blackhawks fans wanted Chicago to select Demidov second overall, where they opted to pick Artyom Levshunov. The Blackhawks reportedly tried to trade back into the top four to take Demidov as well, though.

Assuming Demidov joins the Habs by the end of the weekend — his ELC begins with the 2024-25 season but he still has some paperwork to finish to be able to work in Canada — there’s a possibility we get our first look at Levshunov vs. Demidov in Montreal on Monday night in the penultimate game of the Blackhawks’ regular season.

The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract (2024-25 to 2026-27) with forward Ivan Demidov.

  • Speaking of players who have unique ties between the Blackhawks and Canadiens, the Blackhawks received two draft picks from Montreal for Kirby Dach before the 2022 NHL Draft. Both of those players are now signed and playing with the Blackhawks organization. Gavin Hayes has spent this season in Rockford. The other: Frank Nazar, the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
  • Nazar is one of only three rookies in the NHL with a short-handed goal (Mikael Pyyhtia from Columbus and Collin Graf from San Jose are the other two).
  • Let’s talk about top skating speeds for some Blackhawks since we’ve been so focused on the Blackhawks getting faster this season and when looking at recent drafts. Entering Tuesday’s game, Nazar’s top speed (per NHL EDGE) was 23.07 mph, which ranks in the 86th percentile in the NHL. He has also produced 126 speed bursts of at least 20 mph already, which ranks in the 80th percentile in the NHL. And that was in only 48 NHL games.
  • Entering Tuesday’s game, Ilya Mikheyev‘s top speed was 23.18 mph, which ranks in the 91st percentile in the NHL. Mikheyev had produced 184 speed bursts of at least 20 mph, which ranks in the 94th percentile in the NHL. I wrote about Mikheyev’s excellent season yesterday.
  • Entering Tuesday’s game, Lukas Reichel‘s top speed was 23.04 mph, which ranks in the 85th percentile in the NHL. He had produced 196 speed bursts of at least 20 mph, which ranks in the 96th percentile in the NHL. Also impressive: Reichel 580 bursts of 18-20 mph ranks in the 89th percentile in the league.
  • Quickly departing from the speed conversation for a quick update on a couple guys who have been in the press box recently. After the morning skate on Tuesday, interim head coach Anders Sorensen said the team does have a plan to get both Pat Maroon — who is retiring at the end of the season — and Alec Martinez back in the lineup. Martinez has been out injured, so we’ll have to wait and see when he’s ready to be available.

Sörensen said they have a plan in place to get Maroon and Martinez in the lineup down the stretch.

  • On the other hand, TJ Brodie is not on the two-game road trip with the Blackhawks. A buyout feels automatic here this summer. He didn’t fit well when he did play and the way the young defensemen have emerged have made him unnecessary for a second season. Here’s what a buyout of Brodie would look like from the good folks at PuckPedia:
image-9.png

  • Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff put together scouting reports on more than 20 college players who have signed since their respective NCAA seasons ended. We’ve been able to watch Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel with the Blackhawks in the NHL and have been able to break down a lot of what they’re doing already. So I wanted to share part of what Ellis wrote about another college player who signed with Chicago: defenseman Taige Harding out of Providence. He’s skating with Rockford right now.
At 6-foot-7, he’s hard to miss, and it felt like he really started to use his bigger frame to his advantage this past season. I like his powerful shot, although I wish he’d use it more. He takes up a lot of space with the way he moves around the D-zone, although I wouldn’t call him a particularly quick or efficient skater. That’s more on how he reads plays, which I think has been one of his biggest improvements in recent years. I think he might become a bottom-pairing defender one day, but one with some decent upside.

What to Watch For

  • The Blackhawks are 2-7-1 in their last 10 games. The Bruins are 2-8-0 in their last 10. Something has to give. Maybe a lot of goals?
  • It’s another night to watch Moore and Rinzel learn the NHL. They’ve both been impressive thus far. I’m still looking forward to one of them scoring their first goal in the league.
  • If the game is as exciting as the one in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, at least we’ll have the Frozen Four with Ryan Greene and Boston University getting under way around the end of the second period.

GMKD Talks, Maroon’s Finale, Del Mastro, Frozen Four, OHL Playoffs, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

And then there were three. Yes, three games remain in the 2024-25 regular season for the Chicago Blackhawks. Just one of those is at the United Center — tomorrow evening with the Winnipeg Jets visiting. Darren Pang opened the game last night with the news that Pat Maroon will play his final NHL game against the Jets; he will not travel with the Blackhawks to Montreal or Ottawa to close out the season. It was lovely to see him finish his career a winner on the road last night in the 5-2 win in Boston.

  • A quick thought after doing a little postgame digging last night: Ethan Del Mastro is really good. And I would love it if the Blackhawks would just leave him with Artyom Levshunov for the last three games of the season to see how that plays. Del Mastro and Levshunov spent 13:51 together at 5-on-5 last night during which the Blackhawks had a 16-11 Corsi For advantage and a 10-6 shots on goal advantage. It seems like every time Del Mastro comes back into the lineup after being a healthy scratch, whomever he skates with sees a big improvement in their performance. Just look at where Levshunov finished in these StatCards from the Penguins and Bruins games:

  • Blackhawks general manager joined the guys on 100% Hockey to talk about the current state of the Blackhawks’ rebuild, Connor Bedard and more. Good listen here (roughly eight minutes).

Frozen Four Updates

  • In the first game, Denver was completely overwhelmed by Western Michigan in the first two periods. Shots on goal were 32-8 after 40 minutes. But a 2-0 lead isn’t safe in hockey, and the Pioneers just needed one to make it interesting. They got their first goal off the stick of Blackhawks prospect Aidan Thompson at 6:49 into the third period to cut the lead in half. Denver was able to erase the two-goal deficit in the third and the game went to a second overtime period — but lasted only 26 seconds before Western Michigan ended a fabulous game and advance to the NCAA championship game.

— NCAA Ice Hockey (@NCAAIceHockey) April 10, 2025
  • In the late game — that started significantly later than expected because of the multiple overtimes in the first game — Ryan Greene and Boston University beat Penn State 3-1. Greene did not have a point but he won 11 of a team-high 23 faceoffs (there were 65 total faceoffs in the game and no other Terrier took more than eight).
  • Boston University will play Western Michigan for the NCAA championship on Monday night at 6:30 PM CT on ESPN2.
  • Scott Powers at The Athletic wrote a nice piece on Greene returning to Boston University with a list of boxes he wanted to check this year. He wanted to be a leader — he was a co-captain. He wanted to win the Beanpot — accomplished. And he wanted to win a national championship after two empty trips to the Frozen Four as a freshman and sophomore. I really liked this comment from BU head coach Jay Pandolfo about Greene’s game:
“He looks like a pro — his game overall, his details defensively,” Pandolfo said. “He can skate, coming through the neutral zone with speed, attacking with speed, better at protecting pucks. Just all the things that go into making you a good pro, he’s really developed in all those areas in the last three years. He’s taken a huge step this year. I like where his game’s at. … In practice sometimes, just the way he moves and the way he plays the game and has an understanding of the game, he looks like an NHL player.”
Ryan Greene could be playing for the Blackhawks by the weekend. For now, his focus is on winning a national championship at Boston University. My story on why Greene returned to school this season and his development ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/626…

  • Brantford got off to a good start in their second-round series thanks to their Blackhawks prospects. The Bulldogs were down 2-0 at the end of the first period but scored five unanswered after that to win the game. Let’s Celebrate the Remarkable Career of Pat Maroon

On Saturday, Pat Maroon will play his 848th and final career NHL regular-season game. Originally a sixth-round pick (No. 161 overall) by Anaheim in the 2007 NHL Draft, he didn’t make an NHL roster full-time until 2013-14 season. Since then, Maroon has become a three-time Stanley Cup Champion and one of the most beloved players in the game.

On March 22 before his final game in his hometown, Maroon told Darren Pang that this will indeed be his final season.

"Sometimes you've got to give up everything you know and everything you dreamed of your whole life. I just know it's time for my family to start a new chapter in our lives."

Pat Maroon gets emotional talking about his career with @Panger40. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/p5fPFP6O5S

— Blackhawks on CHSN (@CHSN_Blackhawks) March 22, 2025

In that game in St. Louis, Maroon did what he’s done so many time in his career: he dropped the gloves. Maroon has always been a willing combatant and has handled his business with class. After the game, Blues forward Tyler Tucker told the media he was down to go with Maroon knowing it was his last game in St. Louis. Even though the Blackhawks lost that game 4-1, Maroon was rightfully named the game’s No. 1 Star.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) November 23, 2024

The other side of Maroon that so many people might hear about but don’t get to see on the regular is his personality in the room. He’s hilarious. If you’ve been to a Blackhawks game in the last couple months, they play a video series in which they ask old guys (Maroon, Alec Martinez) and the young Blackhawks about terms that are either new (skibidi, Ohio) and old (what’s a fax machine?). Maroon is absolute gold.

Pat Maroon, hockey player from soup to nuts pic.twitter.com/b9946HCsML

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) December 11, 2024

The combination of being a warrior on the ice — who still has some of the best hands in the game — and being such a great teammate and personality in the room has won over teammates he’s had in every stop along the way during his career. He refers to Lukas Reichel as his adopted son and took him home with him to St. Louis for Christmas this year. That’s just the latest example of the things he’s done to make an impact on other players’ careers. Here’s Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno talking about playing alongside Maroon.

"He's a guy that you love to come to the rink and see everyday."

Nick Folingo on Patrick Maroon and his plan to retire. pic.twitter.com/k2UiXPh8wM

— Blackhawks on CHSN (@CHSN_Blackhawks) March 22, 2025

In his career, Maroon has appeared for the following teams (with regular-season games played for each franchise):

  • Anaheim — 204
  • Tampa Bay — 280 (2020, 2021 Stanley Cup Champion)
  • Edmonton — 154
  • St. Louis — 74 (2019 Stanley Cup Champion)
  • Blackhawks — 68 (including Saturday)
  • Minnesota — 49
  • New Jersey — 17
  • Boston — 2

From the 2007 NHL Draft, only 17 players have appeared in more regular-season games than Maroon (including Martinez, who is just ahead of him on the list at 861). Only two players above Maroon on that list — Jamie Benn and Nick Bonino — were drafted after the third round in that draft class. His longevity in the game is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the game.

The PHWA named Maroon the Blackhawks nominee for the Masterton Trophy this year. That award is given “to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” There are some other great nominees this year, including Marc-André Fleury (who will also retire at the end of the season), but I cannot think of someone in the league who represents what the Masterton Trophy is about better than Maroon.

At the end of the day, Maroon is a hockey player. He’s emotional. He loves the game and he loves his teammates. And he’s respected by everyone in the league.

"I play between the whistles and as hard as I can…every time I get over the boards it's like my last shift ever."

Patrick Maroon addressed the media to discuss his decision to retire from the NHL, as well as being name No. 1 star of the game in St. Louis. pic.twitter.com/MNbLNZEfNq

Maroon’s Farewell, Rockford Help, James, Thompson, Greene’s Title Shot, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Tonight is the final home game on the schedule for the Blackhawks this season. It is also the final game in the career of Pat Maroon, who won’t travel with the team to Montreal or Ottawa to close out the regular season. He leaves a legacy of teammates who loved him, opponents who respected him and three championship rings on his resume. I’m sure there will be all of the emotions for Maroon and his family tonight at the United Center. And I’m also sure Blackhawks fans will show him plenty of love in his finale.

  • On Friday morning, the Blackhawks assigned defenseman Ethan Del Mastro to the Rockford IceHogs. This was expected at some point; he was one of the paper transactions before the trade deadline so he could be available for the IceHogs in the AHL playoffs. He could/will likely be joined at some point by Kevin Korchinski, Artyom Levshunov and (if healthy) Colton Dach.
  • Of course the Blackhawks sent Del Mastro down a couple hours after I praised him in my bullets. He showed enough in the NHL this season that there should be confidence that he’s ready for the top level full-time next year. This is not a negative for Del Mastro. The Blackhawks want the IceHogs to make some noise in the playoffs.
  • A couple interesting nuggets from Scott Powers on Friday afternoon. He reports the Blackhawks have made an offer to Minnesota-Duluth captain Dominic James that is similar to the one defenseman Taige Harding recently signed (ATO with Rockford for the rest of this season with his entry-level contract beginning next year). He has not accepted the deal — yet. He could become a UFA on Aug. 15.
  • Powers also reports the Blackhawks are expected to make a similar offer to Denver forward Aidan Thompson, whose season ended on Thursday night at the Frozen Four.
  • One more: Powers says indications are the Blackhawks coaching search could see them need to offer a contract “likely a guaranteed four-year deal and somewhere around $3 million or more.” So stay tuned here… cough, David Carle, cough

  • Ryan Greene and Boston University will battle Western Michigan for an NCAA championship tonight on ESPN. Puck drop will be at 6:30 PM CT. This is Greene’s third straight trip to the Frozen Four, and he turned down an opportunity to turn pro last summer to win a championship. Tonight’s his chance to check that box.
  • There are two games to watch for Blackhawks prospects in the OHL playoffs today. Martin Misiak, Ty Henry and Erie play at London at 7 PM CT. And then AJ Spellacy and Windsor host Jack Pridham and Kitchener at 7:05 PM CT.
  • Blackhawks interim head coach Anders Sorensen has reportedly joined Sweden’s staff for the World Championship.

Anders Sörensen has been added to Sweden's coaching staff for next month's IIHF World Hockey Championship in Stockholm.

The Blackhawks hosted the team with the best record in the entire NHL for their home finale. The visitors had the likely runaway Vezina Trophy winner in net. Oh, and Alec Martinez returned to the lineup from injury… to skate in his final NHL game.

So it made perfect sense that the Blackhawks would get out-shot 8-4 in the first period and take a 2-0 lead to the intermission. Oh, and both of the goals came on special teams; the first was short-handed and the second was on the power play.

At the end of 40 minutes, that lead was gone. The Blackhawks actually put 14 shots on net in the second period and had some good momentum in the first half of the frame, but a couple penalties slowed that and a power play goal got the Jets on the board.

Winnipeg took a 3-2 lead a little more than two minutes into the third period. The Blackhawks tied the game and then took a lead, but Winnipeg answered quickly and the final four minutes of regulation had some energy in the stands. We were treated to an exciting overtime period in which young guy after young guy came over the boards for the Blackhawks and looked comfortable and good and fast. And Spencer Knight was ridiculous.

Neither team won the game in overtime so the Blackhawks’ home finale went to a skills competition.

Star(s) 1: Pat Maroon and Alec Martinez

Six combines Stanley Cups. Respect from every player in the league. And standing ovations at the United Center after tribute videos on the day Maroon and Martinez play their final career NHL games. In a game that had very little meaning to either team in the standings, these two champions got their flowers.

Star 2: Connor Bedard

Bedard scored his 21st goal of the season and established a new career high with 62 points. This was a bona fide snipe on the power play beating one of the best netminders on the planet. Would love to see 98 ripping these more frequently with this level of reckless confidence. Bedard picked up an assist on the game-tying third goal in the third period — the 81st of his career, a new Blackhawks record for a player in their teens.

Star 3: Frank Nazar

Nazar was flying all night — again — and finished this gorgeous goal with the prime time celly to give the Blackhawks a lead… that lasted all of 2:07. Nazar had an assist on Bedard’s power play goal in the first period and was also very good at the dot once again (8 for 14).

Key Takeaways

  • How about two straight games with a short-handed goal for the captain? Nick Foligno was also the busiest Blackhawk at the dot (he won 6 of a team-high 11 thru two periods).

  • How about 31 goals this year for Ryan Donato? (And now how about keeping him beyond this season?)

  • For those scoring at home, the Blackhawks’ power play goal in the first period was score by a 19-year-old (Bedard) with assists to a 20-year-old defenseman (Sam Rinzel) and a 21-year-old forward (Frank Nazar). Keep that power play combo filed away for September and October.
  • Knight made some fabulous saves in the second period to keep the Blackhawks in the lead as long as he could. His performance in overtime was fabulous. He would probably like another look at Winnipeg’s second goal, but this might be his best save since being acquired.

— Blackhawks on CHSN (@CHSN_Blackhawks) April 13, 2025
  • Late in the second period, Winnipeg forward (and summer UFA… and potential Blackhawks target?) Nikolaj Ehlers got caught up with an official and went down hard. He needed help to get to the Winnipeg bench and went straight to the room. That would be a huge loss for the Jets heading to the playoffs.

  • If you want to know why Blackhawks fans should buy in next year, this game is your evidence. The best team in the conference came into the United Center and the young Blackhawks did not blink.

Emotional Farewells, Exciting Future, Another Bedard Record, Greene Time, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Last night was a lot. There was so much to process before, during and after the last regular season game at the United Center for the 2024-25 Chicago Blackhawks. We knew there would be some noise and emotions for a couple days with the knowledge that this would be Pat Maroon‘s last career game. Though he hasn’t been in Chicago very long, it’s become clear to those in the building and the stands why he’s one of the more beloved players in the league.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) April 12, 2025

But then there was another layer added to the story. During warm-ups, Darren Pang spoke with veteran defenseman Alec Martinez during which he announced last night would also be his final career NHL game. Now, two three-time Stanley Cup champions were hanging up their skates for good on the same night. Maroon was there for the celebration; Martinez was thankful he didn’t have to absorb all of the attention by himself.

The two shared a few emotional moments during the game. They each got a tribute video during the game. After the shootout closed the books on their careers, the Winnipeg Jets lined up to shake their hands and show respect — which speaks to the class of those players and what both Maroon and Martinez mean to opponents as well. The two then thanked the crowd at the United Center for accepting them into the Blackhawks family and shared an embrace as they called it a night together.

Bigger than the game. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/wIKatnKrwe

— Blackhawks on CHSN (@CHSN_Blackhawks) April 13, 2025

Those were the emotional events off the ice…

  • On the ice, the Blackhawks had a young lineup around the two elder statesmen and they skated with a team that, at the moment, has the best record in the entire NHL. The baby Blackhawks took the Winnipeg Jets to a shootout in a game they needed to stay on top of not only the Central Division, but the Western Conference and, potentially, have home ice in the Stanley Cup Final. This was far from a rollover game for the Jets. And the Blackhawks gave them everything they could handle.
  • I mentioned this in my postgame notes, but Connor Bedard broke the Blackhawks franchise record for assists by a player as a teenager last night with his 81st career helper. When you consider how easy it is to complain about the “thousands of line combinations” he’s dealt with over his two NHL seasons, having two 40-assist seasons is pretty remarkable.

  • Since Seth Jones was traded on March 3, the Blackhawks rank just 27th in the league on the power play (15.0 percent entering Saturday’s game). I think you can make an obvious connection between replacing Jones with defensemen who are either 19 (Artyom Levshunov), 20 (Kevin Korchinski) or, more recently, 20 (Sam Rinzel) is a good start for the dip in success. But Ben Pope had some good stuff here about the number of scoring chances the Blackhawks’ power play has been generating since Jones was dealt.

Blackhawks' scoring chances per minute with different power play quarterbacks:

Seth Jones: 0.95
Korchinski: 0.86
Rinzel: 0.79
Levshunov: 0.74

That's one area where Jones' departure has hurt. Story: https://t.co/TEi9CExG41

  • Congrats to the Western Michigan Broncos for winning the first NCAA championship in program history last night. They beat Boston University with a shocking amount of ease, grabbing a 3-1 lead early in the second period and then scoring three unanswered goals in the third to take a 6-2 victory. That game being in the books means it’s now time for Ryan Greene to make a decision about the next step of his hockey journey. I’m hearing he could be with the Blackhawks in Montreal on Tuesday night. Stay tuned…
  • Greene had an assist on BU’s second goal and 11 of a team-high 19 faceoffs in the championship game. There were only 60 total faceoffs in the game.
  • One of the Blackhawks’ college prospects got a deal done on Saturday. Aidan Thompson signed a two-year, entry-level contract that begins next season. He’ll report to Rockford on a PTO deal.
  • The NHL staff at The Athletic named the most valuable player on each NHL team. Ryan Donato earned that distinction for the Blackhawks, and I have a hard time arguing against his credentials. He earned at least this recognition — how about a new contract?
  • The NHL staff at The Athletic named the most disappointing player on each NHL team. The Blackhawks representative on this list was Philipp Kurashev.
  • I’ll have my own Blackhawks season superlatives when we get into the offseason and don’t want to spoil those here, but I’m not sure I’ll have Kurashev as my most disappointing Blackhawk this year.
  • AJ Spellacy was a scratch for Windsor again last night. He’s been dealing with an upper-body issue.
  • Only one Sunday game for Blackhawks prospects in the OHL playoffs: Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford host Oshawa at 2 PM CT.
  • Finally, this is potentially enormous news!

Hearing the @USHL, @NHL and @usahockey have reached a landmark agreement that includes player-first initiatives and funding resources that will finally put the USHL on a more level ice surface with its Canadian major junior equivalents.

Blackhawks Sign Ryan Greene

On Sunday morning, the Blackhawks announced the team has signed center Ryan Greene to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal begins immediately, and carries a $950,000 salary cap hit.

Greene, 21, was originally a second round pick (No. 57 overall) by the Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL Draft. His collegiate career came to an end on Saturday night in the NCAA championship game where his Boston Terriers lost to Western Michigan. He was one of the better faceoff guys in college hockey this season while posting 38 points (13 goals, 25 assists) in 40 games as a junior at BU.

He is expected to appear in the final two games of the regular season in Montreal and Ottawa.

Corey Crawford is a Hall of Famer!

This is absolutely awesome! On Monday afternoon, the QMJHL announced its Hall of Fame induction class for 2025. And two-time Blackhawks Stanley Cup champion goaltender Corey Crawford is on the list!

Watch as Crawford finds out he’s a QMJHL Hall of Famer (from X):

What a wave of emotions! Check out Corey Crawford's reaction when he learned he'd be inducted into the QMJHL Hall of Fame! 🥹#QMJHLHOF | @monctonwildcats | @NHLBlackhawks pic.twitter.com/1664UYvJfn

— QMJHL (@QMJHL) April 14, 2025

The other honorees this year are Mathieu Benoit, Raymond Bolduc, Claude Julien and Patrick Lebeau.

Here’s what they wrote in the release announcing the induction class:

A man of heart and family, Corey Crawford will forever remember his journey, from his street hockey games with his brother and friends to his prowess in the National Hockey League. His determination has earned him a brilliant career at every level he played.

Having lived his childhood in Châteauguay, in the Montérégie region, he found himself far from home to begin his time in the QMJHL, with the Moncton Wildcats.

After the Wildcats scouts saw him enjoy a season of 17-wins in 21-games, with a 1.92 average in the Midget AAA ranks with Gatineau, they secured his services for four seasons, selecting him in the 1st round of the 2001 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Draft. A masterstroke that Moncton will not regret.

Seasons and playoffs included, in 231 games, his 117-83-18 record and 12 shutouts tell us a lot about the impact he had on the Wildcats’ success. At the end of his junior season in 2005, he was the QMJHL record holder with his lifetime save percentage in the regular season of .914.

In 2003-04, he led the Wildcats to their first appearance in the QMJHL final, losing to the Gatineau Olympiques in five games. Beginning in the 2005-06 season, he spent five full seasons honing his game and technique with the Norfolk Admirals and Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League, allowing him to equip himself for the next step.

Almost seven years after being their 2nd round pick in the 2003 NHL Draft, Corey Crawford became the 25-year-old Chicago Blackhawks’ trusted goaltender for 488 games in 2010-11. He has had 10 consecutive seasons of 28 or more games, with save percentages ranging from .903 to .929 annually.

His consistent performances have earned him 10 seasons in a row with an average of fewer than three goals allowed per game; His best campaign was in 2012-13 with an exceptional goals-against average of 1.94 in the regular season, and 1.84 in the playoffs, leading his team to a Stanley Cup, his first of two (2013 and 2015).

In 2014-15, for the second time in his career, his name will be inscribed on the William Jennings Trophy, awarded to the goaltenders of the team with the best goals-against average in the NHL. In 2015 and 2017, he participated in the NHL All-Star Game.

Among goaltenders with 100 or more NHL games, his 2.45 goals-against average ranks him 28th all-time, while his save percentage stands at .918, 13th all-time in the NHL, close to legendary co-leaders Ken Dryden and Dominik Hasek, at .922. He also added 26 shutouts.

During the QMJHL’s 50th season, in 2018-19, he was selected to the 2000 team of the decade as a goaltender, along with Ondrej Pavelec and Nicola Riopel.

Blackhawks 4, Canadiens 3 (SO) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The environment in Montreal as absolutely electric on Monday night. Between the Habs being able to clinch a playoff berth and Ivan Demidov making his NHL debut, this was as hot a barn as the Blackhawks have played in since… well, it’s been a while. And it only took Demidov six minutes to have a point in the NHL as he set up the game’s opening score.

A little more than seven minutes later, Demidov scored his first career NHL goal and I can only hope the social media team for the Blackhawks turned off notifications for their mentions until September (at least). But the Blackhawks got a late power play and were able to get on the board to escape the first period emotions chasing only one.

With the noise settled after the first intermission, the Blackhawks really outplayed the Habs in the second period. The Hawks had a couple gorgeous short-handed chances and then scored a power play goal to tie the game. Chicago was short-handed at the end of the second but took a tie score to the room after 40 minutes.

Then the Blackhawks scored the next goal and had a 3-2 lead in the third period and suddenly all of the pressure was on the Canadiens. But a hilariously soft call gave the Habs a power play inside the final four minutes of regulation down one and they were able to slip a puck thru Arvid Söderblom and tie the game. And the game stayed tied thru the end of the third period and we were treated to free hockey. Five minutes of overtime didn’t finish it so this one went to the shootout.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

Demidov might have stolen all of the eyeballs and headlines with two points in the first period, but the best player on the ice on either team thru 40 minutes was Nazar. He made a pretty pass to set up the power play goal in the first period and ripped home a power play goal of his own in the second to tie the game. When he wasn’t putting points on the board, he was making athletic plays all over the ice. Nazar is putting the league on notice lately (he’s up to 8 points in his last 7 games).

Oh, and Nazar scored the shootout winner, too.

Star 2: Sam Rinzel

Rinzel was really good again. His skating made a difference a few times when the puck needed to get out of the zone. He had an assist on the second goal of the night for the Blackhawks. Rinzel skated 25:04 in regulation! Rinzel also finished the night with a team-leading four shots on net (plus two more that missed the mark) in a final ice time total of 26:52.

Star 3: Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi was really good and active tonight on the line with Nazar. He attempted five shots in the game.

Key Takeaways

  • Ryan Greene took the most faceoffs for the Blackhawks in the first period (he won one of five). His line with Nick Foligno and Oliver Moore had a couple really strong shifts in the middle of the second period as well. He had taken a team-high nine faceoffs thru two periods (won three). Greene finished the game with three blocked shots as well. He didn’t look out of place jumping into a hostile Montreal environment at all.
  • Artyom Levshunov clearly knew the narrative tonight. He was skating hard and playing physically. He took a couple penalties that weren’t ideal but he also led the team with three blocked shots thru two periods. He finished the night with a team-high four hits with those three blocks in over 20 minutes of ice time. I thought Levshunov played a good, strong game tonight.
  • I don’t know what exactly Lukas Reichel was doing (other than reminding us why he’s scratched as frequently as he is) on the first goal of the night, but he put Connor Murphy in a tough spot by just backing off Demidov and watching him go to work. Reichel was minus-two in the first period. But he scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, soooo…..

Blackhawks at Senators — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

This is it, folks. The 2024-25 regular season comes to an end for the Blackhawks tonight in Ottawa. And you know what? That kinda stinks. The way this team played against Winnipeg in the home finale and then last night in an incredible atmosphere in Montreal makes me want this roster to play another 20 games. The arrow is pointing up right now for the Chicago Blackhawks, and that’s truly exciting.

Will they bring the energy out again tonight that we saw when the game ended in Montreal? Or will there be an emotional let down playing against a team that’s already clinched a playoff berth and is trying to stay healthy? That is the test tonight for the young Blackhawks.
