News Blackhawks Team Notes

Ovechkin’s Night, Moore on the Board, Reichel Sits, Mean Harding, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Last night the Blackhawks hung around against a Capitals team that might win the Presidents Trophy this year. A couple nights after being ten seconds from beating a Colorado Avalanche team that is a legit Stanley Cup contender. Does it suck that these games are ending up in losses? Sure. Absolutely. But the fact is the lineup the Blackhawks are putting on the ice probably has the least collective NHL experience in the entire league right now — and that’s with Pat Maroon and Nick Foligno. Learning to compete in the NHL can be the hardest part for some teams. That doesn’t necessarily appear to be the Blackhawks’ issue right now. They’ve moved on to learning how to win/finish games.

  • I want to say it again this morning because it bears repeating: Alex Ovechkin telling his head coach point blank “no” when asked if he wanted to break the record into an empty net at home is why he’s an all-time great. Knowing the Caps’ next game is on the road, he could have easily tapped in. He didn’t. That gets a ton of respect from me.
  • After a tough loss last night, the Blackhawks stayed on the ice and paid their respects to Ovechkin after he tied the record. Class move.
Respect. pic.twitter.com/9Y8D9heRJA

  • Frank Nazar was the Blackhawks’ best forward last night. Again.
  • Lukas Reichel was a healthy scratch on Friday because he missed a team meeting before the morning skate, according to interim head coach Anders Sorensen. So the young man who has struggled to stay out of the dog house based on production oversleeps on one of the last road trips of the season. I hope he’s only renting in Chicago…
  • On Wednesday night, the line of Reichel with Landon Slaggert and Oliver Moore had a 2-11 CORSI For ratio and a 1-5 shots on goal ratio at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick). Last night, Philipp Kurashev got Reichel’s spot with the same two young forwards. He scored a goal and both Slaggert and Moore had two assists in the game. Hmm…

  • Good read here from Ben Pope on the early days of Moore’s professional career. As I noted many, many times throughout the season as he moved up and down the lineup at Minnesota, the Gophers were using him in situations to help develop his complete game. I would absolutely love it if he paid incredibly close attention to Ilya Mikheyev as a role model. Get the puck, keep the puck and make things happen at an extremely high speed.

Oliver Moore's production at Minnesota this season wasn't spectacular, but he believes he quietly improved a lot.

He shifted his mentality to tell himself, "I’m going to hold onto this puck, and no one is going to knock me off of it."

  • Good read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic on newly signed defenseman Taige Harding. Y’all have been begging for there to be some big nasty in the organization and I’ve been trying to tell ya he’s precisely that. Now he’s in Rockford, and we might get to see more of it in training camp finally this fall.

“He was a mean son of a b—- all year.”

Newly-signed Blackhawks prospect Taige Harding could bring something different to the defense.

  • Jack Pridham and Kitchener hosted Flint and sent them home for the summer. Pridham did not have a point in a 2-1 elimination win for the Rangers.
  • Windsor hosted Sault Ste. Marie and eliminated the Greyhounds with an 8-4 win. AJ Spellacy was a scratch again. We’ll see if he’s available to start the next round.
  • We’ve got two playoff games in the OHL on the slate tonight. Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford host North Bay. And Martin Misiak, Ty Henry and Erie visit Saginaw.
  • Congrats, Kaner.

Blackhawks Prospects Lardis, Mišiak BOTH Produce Hat Tricks in OHL Playoffs

Hey, it’s Saturday night and the NCAA’s Final Four is on television. But two Blackhawks prospects in the OHL playoffs had enormous performances that deserve your attention.

Blackhawks prospects Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker and Brantford hosted North Bay, and Lardis did Lardis things. Three of those things, specifically.

The OHL’s record-setting goal leader had a hat trick. Check the move on his second goal, where he goes between his own legs to get the shot off! Vanacker had an assist on the first goal. Brantford’s win ends the series and the Bulldogs advance.

Martin Mišiak Doubles the Fun

Blackhawks prospects Martin Mišiak, Ty Henry and Erie visited Saginaw and Misiak did… dare I say… Lardis things? Misiak also had a hat trick (and an assist for a four-point night) to lead Erie to a series-clinching win as well.

Moore’s Impact, Dach Not Close, Kantserov, OHL Stars, Söderström Coming? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Because the first few days of being a professional athlete haven’t been quite crazy enough for Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel, their gauntlet will go from Nathan MacKinnon on Wednesday night to Alex Ovechkin making history on Friday night to… an early evening date with Sidney Crosby on Sunday. Talk about “welcome to the NHL” moments stacking up in three of their first four games! I loved this comment from Moore on Saturday when asked about being part of that history — while having his first career multi-point NHL game get massively overshadowed.

Oliver Moore now has one of the most unique "First NHL Point" stories ever. (And second point, too.)

"That was a surreal game. That was absurd."

"He's the greatest goal-scorer of all time…so I was happy for him, to be honest with you. It was really cool to see."

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) April 5, 2025
  • Here’s more from… Moore… about the Blackhawks’ roster and, again, it being about learning to win as much as anything for the young players right now. (Shoutout to Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune for tweeting the video.)
“We have all the pieces, it feels. … But winning games is definitely a mental battle, and you have to be mentally focused all the time.”

  • The “update” we got on Saturday on Colton Dach isn’t exactly ideal. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen said Dach “isn’t close” to returning from his hyperextended left elbow. Including today, there are nine days left in the regular season.
  • According to a report from Jennifer Engstrom of Swedish outlet Expressen on Saturday, there is buzz that right-handed defenseman Victor Söderström will join the Blackhawks next year. Söderström reportedly won the Börje Salming Trophy as the the top defenseman in the Swedish Hockey League. His rights were acquired from Utah at the trade deadline. He recorded 37 points in 49 regular-season games for Brynäs. He’s listed at 6-0 and 196 pounds, so we’ll have to wait and see if/how he fits on a right side that appears to have Rinzel, Artyom Levshunov and Connor Murphy in the mix to start next season.
  • And now an update from Russia courtesy Scott Powers. Roman Kanteserov‘s season has come to a close. It was a good one. He’ll be back in Russia again next year.

Metallurg & Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov were eliminated from the KHL playoffs today after winning the Gagarin Cup last year.

He had two assists in six playoff games and 13 goals and 25 assists in 47 regular-season games. He has one more year on his KHL contract.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) April 5, 2025
  • The two teams in the OHL playoffs with multiple Blackhawks prospects — Erie (Martin Mišiak, Ty Henry) and Brantford (Nick Lardis, Marek Vanacker) — both advanced to the second round of the playoffs with huge wins last night. And they did it because BOTH Mišiak and Lardis had a hat trick last night!
  • Mišiak now has 7 goals and 5 assists for 12 points in five playoff games this spring. Lardis also has 7 goals with 2 assists for 9 points in his five playoff games. They’re tied for second in the entire OHL playoffs in goal scoring.
  • I went ahead and put those six clips out last night. ICYMI here’s the link:

  • We’ll (hopefully) get a matchup of Blackhawks prospects in the second round of the OHL playoffs beginning Thursday. Jack Pridham and Kitchener will face AJ Spellacy and Windsor. Spellacy has missed the last two games because of an upper-body injury.

Blackhawks 3, Penguins 1 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

I would have a hard time describing the opening 20 minutes of this game as anything better than mediocre. The best scoring chance of the first period for either team came for the Blackhawks on a breakaway for Landon Slaggert that got denied on the doorstep. Pittsburgh had a few good looks but either shot it high/wide/whiffed completely.

The second period was equally depressing for the top five prospects in the 2025 NHL Draft for about 17 minutes until the Blackhawks had to kill the first penalty of the game. Not only did they kill it, but a short-handed goal gave the Hawks a lead! They took that one-goal lead to the room, but had 75 seconds left to kill on a second penalty to open the third.

The Penguins started to put more pressure on the Blackhawks and it felt like the dam might break at some point, but it didn’t. Ryan Donato created a breakaway for himself to end an extended period in the wrong zone that didn’t end with a goal, but the Blackhawks flipped the ice. Moments later, Connor Bedard made a nice pass to Ilya Mikheyev who hit the burners and scored a huge next goal to give the Blackhawks a two-goal lead. Unfortunately, the Penguins ended the shutout bid with a power play goal inside the final six minutes of regulation.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

Nazar got the assignment of skating against Evgeni Malkin’s line and was on the ice for zero (0) Blackhawks shots on net to 7 for the Penguins in the first period. At the end of two periods, Nazar had a team-leading three shots on net, one blocked shot, one hit and the short-handed goal to give Chicago the lead. And it was the first shorty of Nazar’s career. Once again, he was doing it all for the Blackhawks.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) April 6, 2025

Star 2: Sam Rinzel

Thru two periods, Rinzel led all Blackhawks in ice time at 14:36 during which he was credited with two shots on net, one hit and one blocked shots. There were a couple times where he used his speed and length to break up would-be rushes for the Penguins during the second period where things started to look like they might go sideways as well. Oh, and he was drawing the Sidney Crosby line on most shifts (Rinzel spent 6:28 on the ice at 5-on-5 against Crosby in the first two periods). He picked up his first career NHL point on Mikheyev’s goal in the third period.

Star 3: Ilya Mikheyev

Mikheyev scoring his 19th goal of the season when the Blackhawks really needed the next score. Mikheyev scored his 20th into the empty net. He was great the entire night.

Key Takeaways

  • Holy **** the Penguins are terrible. And they have at least three future Hall of Famers on their roster…
  • Donato and Spencer Knight could have easily been stars in this game as well. They were both really good, with Donato’s defensive play flipping the ice in the third. Knight made some huge saves whtn the Blackhawks needed them.
  • The Blackhawks were out-shot 8-6 in the first period. They won three of ten faceoffs. No Chicago skater was credited with more than one shot on net.
  • At the end of the second period, the Blackhawks had won 9 of 26 faceoffs (35 percent).
  • I thought this was a much better, more confident Kevin Korchinski tonight. He was skating with the puck better and using his reach to get the puck out of trouble. Give me more of that.
  • Wyatt Kaiser (0.73) and Artyom Levshunov (0.61) had the highest expected Goals For rate thru two periods at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick). Joe Veleno (0.60) was the best among Blackhawks forwards.

Connor Bedard Made Some More History on Sunday Night

On Sunday night, Connor Bedard made a little history that got lost in the shuffle with between Alex Ovechkin breaking the record and the Blackhawks beating the Penguins. He became the 11th player — third active — in NHL history to have multiple 60-point seasons as a teenager.

Here’s the full list of players who recorded multiple 60-point seasons as a teenager in NHL history:

  • Patrik Laine – 2016-17 & 2017-18
  • Sidney Crosby – 2005-06 & 2006-07
  • Jimmy Carson – 1986-87 &1987-88
  • Steve Yzerman – 1983-84 & 1984-85
  • Brian Bellows – 1982-83 & 1983-84
  • Phil Housley – 1982-83 & 1984-85
  • Bobby Carpenter – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Dale Hawerchuk – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Ron Francis – 1981-82 & 1982-83
  • Wayne Gretzky – 1979-80 & 1980-81

And, with his assist on Ilya Mikheyev‘s game-winning goal, Bedard became just the sixth active player to record a 40-assist season as a teenager. He joined Crosby (84 in 2006-07 & 63 in 2005-06), Patrick Kane (51 in 2007-08), Clayton Keller (42 in 2017-18), Mitch Marner (42 in 2016-17) and Anze Kopitar (41 in 2006-07). Pretty good company on both lists!

2025 NHL Mock Draft: Early April First Round Projections

We’re now into the final ten days of the 2024-25 NHL regular season. Teams are clinching playoff berths and getting eliminated every day. For some teams, the hope of a run for a championship is alive and well. For others, the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery can’t come soon enough (it’s reportedly going to be the first week of May, Blackhawks fans).

As we inch closer to the draft order/lottery odds being finalized for the non-playoff teams, let’s take one last run at the first round with an updated mock draft. There are a plenty of teams with multiple picks in the first round this year and one specifically that is dangerously close to either moving or not moving.

Here’s our latest run at how the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft might play out this summer.

2025 NHL Mock Draft — First Round

1. San Jose Sharks — Matthew Schaefer, LHD
6-2, 183
Shoots: Left

Schaefer is the consensus No. 1 prospect in the 2025 class, and he would be a great addition to the Sharks’ pipeline. If their top four includes Schaefer and Sam Dickinson, San Jose’s second pick in the first round last year, they’re in great shape on the back end. The Sharks are one of the teams that owns multiple picks in the first round this year.

2. Chicago BlackhawksMichael Misa, C/LW
6-1, 184
Shoots: Left

Since our last mock draft, the Blackhawks have signed Oliver Moore and Sam Rinzel and inserted them into the NHL lineup. And the returns have been good early in their professional careers. Adding Moore to a young forward group with Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar and Landon Slaggert is a solid foundation already in the NHL. With a truckload of cap space and a healthy number of draft picks again this year, the Blackhawks adding a potential top-line center with dynamic playmaking ability and good size in Misa feels like a no-brainer.

3. Nashville Predators — James Hagens, C
5-11, 170
Shoots: Left

Barry Trotz has long coveted top centers, and he can grab one with Hagens available here in our mock draft. Hagens has had a very good freshman collegiate season. The Preds are one of the teams with a truckload of picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, so get used to seeing them in our mock draft.

4. Boston Bruins — Porter Martone, RW
6-3, 208
Shoots: Right

Boston dumped at the deadline and it appears to be working perfectly. They’re now in the top four in the lottery, which puts them in position to grab a difference maker who could be in Boston soon. Martone is a big forward who plays with an edge — something the Bruins could use. If you can’t sign a Tkachuk, draft the next best thing?

5. Philadelphia Flyers — Anton Frondell, C
6-0, 196
Shoots: Right

Philly has 11 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, including seven in the first two rounds — so they’re going to be frequently listed in this mock draft. Frondell looks like a lock to be a top-five pick at this point and would be a great fit with Matvei Michkov and some of their other young forwards.

6. Seattle Kraken — Caleb Desnoyers, C
6-1, 178
Shoots: Left

Desnoyers has been climbing rankings over the past couple months and feels like he’s establishing himself as the top prospect in the next tier after the top four are off the board. Seattle is still building organizational depth and this would be a terrific pick.

7. Pittsburgh Penguin — Roger McQueen, C
6-5, 197
Shoots: Right

The Penguins now have 12 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft, so they’ll be busy trying to retool around Sidney Crosby so they aren’t picking in the top ten frequently in the final years of his career. McQueen missed most of this season because of injury but the comps to Evgeni Malkin (pun intended, but largely because of his size) could make this an easy call for Pittsburgh.

8. Buffalo Sabres — Victor Eklund, RW
5-11, 161
Shoots: Right

Eklund is a solid all-around forward who could go anywhere between 7-14. With Buffalo sliding out of the top five, Eklund would be a really good value for them at this point in our mock draft. There might be more changes to the mix in Buffalo this summer, though. So stay tuned.

9. Anaheim Ducks — Radim Mrtka, RHD
6-6, 207
Shoots: Right

I’ve been on Mrtka to Anaheim with them picking anywhere between 5 and 12 thus far. They need a big right-shot defenseman and he does that. This is a good spot for him in the draft, too.

10. Columbus Blue Jackets — Jackson Smith, LHD
6-3, 195
Shoots: Left

The Blue Jackets are likely disappointed their playoff dreams didn’t fully materialize this year but their young forwards are showing a lot of promise. Smith is a really good defense prospect who could impact their blue line soon.

11. New York Islanders — Jake O’Brien, C
6-2, 172
Shoots: Right

O’Brien is one of the helium prospects in this draft who has really elevated his stock with a strong performance on a stacked Brantford team (including a couple Blackhawks prospects). He has ideal size for an Eastern Conference team looking to add down the middle, and the Isles need all the offensive help they can get.

12. New York Rangers* — Kashawn Aitcheson, LHD
6-1, 196
Shoots: Left

This pick is one to watch in the final games of the regular season. The Rangers traded this pick to Vancouver in the JT Miller deal, and it was subsequently flipped to the Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson trade. But it’s top-13 protected — and the Rangers are currently selecting 12th overall. If the Rangers make this pick, Aitcheson may be viewed as an eventual replacement for K’Andre Miller on the left side of their blue line.

13. Detroit Red Wings — Carter Bear, LW
6-0, 179
Shoots: Left

Bear has been a hot name in draft rankings since the start of the calendar year. He has decent size and has a game that scouts love. Detroit is going to be a team to watch this summer with another playoff miss this season. They have some good young pieces, but at some point the Yzerplan needs to get them into the postseason.

14. Utah Hockey Club — Cameron Reid, LHD
6-0, 175
Shoots: Left

Utah has lots of needs, but their forward group is pretty good and young right now. Reid looks like a future power play quarterback who can skate and get the puck on/in the net frequently.

15. Vancouver Canucks — Malcolm Spence, LW
6-1, 203
Shoots: Left

The Canucks have been a hot mess all season and need to restock their forward group; they might lose Brock Boeser to free agency this summer. Spence is a polarizing prospect who could go earlier than this and might slide into the 20s as well. This feels like a nice spot for him and a good pick for the Canucks.

16. Montreal Canadiens — Justin Carbonneau, RW
6-1, 191
Shoots: Right

Some Guy named Carbonneau in Montreal would stir all of the nostalgia for Habs fans, but this would be a nice landing spot for him in our mock draft. He’s a good winger with a lot of skill who could help Montreal’s collection of skaters.

17. Montreal Canadiens (from CGY) — Logan Hensler, RHD
6-2, 192
Shoots: Right

With consecutive picks, the Habs can get creative. Hensler is the second right-handed defenseman on most boards and has solid size to help their blue line eventually. Splitting their picks between a forward and defense makes sense.

18. Calgary Flames (from NJ) — Lynden Lakovic, LW
6-4 , 190
Shoots: Left

The Flames landing Lakovic here would be tremendous value; he could do somewhere in the 11-14 range as well. He has good size and can move on the wing. In a Western Conference that’s getting bigger, the Flames getting a player like this here is a nice pick.

19. Columbus Blue Jackets (from MIN) — Brady Martin, C
6-0, 178
Shoots: Right

The Blue Jackets taking a center with decent size feels like a luxury pick, but Martin would be good value for them at this point in our mock draft. I have the Blue Jackets going with a defenseman earlier in this mock draft, so a forward here makes sense.

20. Ottawa Senators — Cameron Schmidt, RW
5-8, 152
Shoots: Right

Schmidt is small but he can score, which is why his name comes up into the early teens in some mock drafts. Ottawa has plenty of size up front and could us a sniper; they tried it with Alex DeBrincat but that didn’t work. Maybe they’ll view Schmidt as that guy.

21. St. Louis Blues — Joshua Ravensbergen, G
6-5, 195

St. Louis is the hottest team in the NHL and is sprinting into the playoffs. There are lots of areas they could address here, but an eventual replacement for Jordan Binnington makes a lot of sense. Ravensbergen is the only goalie with a first-round grade and this would be a good fit for both the payer and the organization.

22. Calgary Flames (from FLA) — Cole Reschny, C
5-10, 187
Shoots: Left

Calgary is stockpiling assets and Reschny is a good player who’s been up and down in a lot of prospect rankings since the start of the calendar year. There seems to be buzz now that he’s climbing again and could wind up coming off the board in this range.

23. Philadelphia Flyers (from EDM) — Blake Fiddler, RHD
6-4, 207
Shoots: Right

The son of Vernon Fiddler is a big right-shot defenseman who would be a nice addition to the the Flyers’ blue line. His size makes him feel like an old school Flyers player and makes sense at this point in our mock draft.

24. Nashville Predators (from TB) — Cullen Potter, C
5-9, 168
Shoots: Left

It’s going to be an interesting summer in Nashville after a shockingly bad regular season following a summer in which Trotz went for it in free agency. Potter is a great skater who’s playing college hockey this season. He likely projects as a wing because of his size. More offense in Nashville.

25. Philadelphia Flyers (from COL) — Braeden Cootes, C
6-0, 183
Shoots: Right

Another pick for the Flyers is really good value if Cootes is still available at this point in the draft. He could wind up at center or on the wing as a pro and would be a nice addition with their third pick in the first round of our mock draft.

26. Carolina Hurricanes — William Moore, C
6-2, 161
Shoots: Left

Carolina has tried to add size up front via trade the last two years, but both Jake Guentzel and Mikko Rantanen haven’t wanted to sign there. Moore has good size for a center prospect and could help them accomplish that goal thru the draft.

27. Los Angeles Kings — Ben Kindel, C
5-10, 176
Shoots: Left

The Kings are looking to add quality to their system and Kindel would be a nice value pick for their pipeline at this point in the first round. He isn’t the biggest prospect on the board but he’s likely the best available.

28. Chicago Blackhawks (from TOR) — Jack Nesbitt, C
6-4, 185
Shoots: Left

The Blackhawks are getting plenty of looks at Nesbitt this season; he plays with AJ Spellacy in Windsor. Adding another big center would be ideal for the future. Nesbitt has been quietly climbing draft rankings as a nearly point-per-game center in the OHL, and his size makes him a fascinating center to project. Nesbitt has seven points (one goal, six assists) in five games to start his postseason for Windsor this year.

29. Nashville Predators (from VGK) — Ivan Ryabkin, C
6-0, 170
Shoots: Left

Ryabkin left Russia and came over to play in the UHSL this season. His rankings are all over the place, so this might be a good spot for a team to take a shot on him as a luxury pick with big upside — and Nashville having three picks in the first round makes this a valuable lottery ticket for them to use here.

30. San Jose Sharks (from DAL) — Bill Zonnon, LW
6-2, 190
Shoots: Left

The Sharks went with a defenseman at the top of the draft and will be back on the clock with the 33rd pick in the draft, so this is best player available territory for San Jose. Zonnon is a big, physical forward who could complement their existing group of forwards well when he’s ready.

31. Washington Capitals — Henry Brzustewicz, RHD

The Capitals enjoyed the celebration surrounding Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record this weekend, but now the focus shifts to trying to make the magical season end with a parade. Their big roster addition after the deadline has been young forward Ryan Leonard, who scored his first goal against the Blackhawks. They should look to help the future of their blue line here, and Brzustewicz is a nice prospect at this point in the draft.

Yes, this would mean Canada’s Stanley Cup drought has come to an end. That in itself would be a huge story. If it is Winnipeg, who were thought to be on the verge of a rebuild just a couple years ago, it would be a magnificent story for the Jets and the league. Murtagh is a solid center prospect with decent size who figures to be in this range in the draft and would be a nice add for the Jets’ system.
