Bedard Out, Lardis Time? Kane Chasing History, a Brossoit Goal! West Scores Two! and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Usually I have prospect highlights a little lower in our bullets, but the injury suffered by Connor Bedard last night makes it feel like a call to Rockford might need to happen. The good news is the IceHogs were at home, so it’s only a drive to get someone to Chicago.

The most likely candidate to bring some offense to help the Blackhawks if Bedard is going to miss any significant time would be Nick Lardis, who scored his 13th goal of the season for the IceHogs last night. Here are a couple angles of the goal (Landon Slaggert had the primary assist).

  • Patrick Kane returns to the United Center with a chance to make some history tonight. If he stole the show on the night the Blackhawks retired Chris Chelios’ jersey, imagine if he can produce a hat trick on the night they give away a Chelios bobblehead to reach 500 career goals — in the building where he built his legend. Kane comes into tonight’s game with 497 career regular season goals.
  • Good read here from Scott Powers on the Söderblom brothers. Arvid will get the nod between the pipes tonight.

  • Before I get into a trade big board, two significant deals went down on Friday. The first saw the Pittsburgh Penguins acquire goaltender Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and the Edmonton Oilers’ second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft in exchange for goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin. In a separate deal, the Oilers acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators for a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
  • The folks at ESPN put together a lengthy, detailed trade big board this week. The headline is all of the mind-numbing Quinn Hughes scenarios; those are obviously now out-dated. But they discuss the top tier guys who are in walk years, guys with some term left, short-term rentals who could help a team in the postseason, bargain shoppers’ delights and the always-entertaining goalie market. There are a few Blackhawks mentioned: Laurent Brossoit, Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy. A good one to look thru and consider if there are any names out there that would make sense for the Blackhawks to consider adding at this point.
The new NHL trade big board on ESPN has dropped!

  • Sticking with Brossoit, strong comments here from the Blackhawks’ netminder as he works his way back with the IceHogs.

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

  • Staying in Rockford but shifting our focus to the younger guys, the IceHogs scored four times in the second period last night. Both Sam Rinzel and Ethan Del Mastro picked up two assists in the middle frame. And Martin Misiak scored his first professional goal last night for the IceHogs as well.
  • In the OHL last night, Jack Pridham had an assist for Kitchener in a 4-1 loss.
  • AJ Spellacy had an assist in the third period for Windsor in a 4-3 loss.
  • In the WHL, Nathan Behm had an assist on Kamloops’ first goal of the night.
  • In the USHL, Mason West scored his first and second goals of the season in his second game. He also had an assist.

Around the NHL

  • The Kraken will be without Jared McCann for three weeks with lower-body injury. Seattle is right there with the Blackhawks in the wild card race.
  • On Friday morning the Carolina Hurricanes announced they fired Chicago Wolves head coach Cam Abbott. Assistant coach Spiros Anastas will serve as the Wolves’ interim head coach.
  • A huge blow to Tampa. Victor Hedman is out until the Olympics.
Injury Update: Victor Hedman will have a procedure on his elbow on Monday. He is expected to return in early February and play for Team Sweden in the Olympics.

Blackhawks 0, Red Wings 4 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

After an incredible, emotional opening ceremony that celebrated the old Chicago Stadium, the Blackhawks proceeded to give up the first goal of the game — to Alex DeBrincat, after only 55 seconds of game time. Because the Blackhawks were celebrating their past, Patrick Kane scored the second goal of the game. Why not, right? It was a good first period for the former Blackhawks, not so much for the present.

This was a flat offensive performance in which the Blackhawks really needed their goaltender to make a few saves and keep them in it until they woke up. Unfortunately, Arvid Söderblom wasn’t sharp right out of the gate and the Blackhawks were chasing early.

Detroit got the first goal in the second period, this time opting to not have a former Blackhawk score. Which was a nice change of pace, but the Blackhawks were now chasing three. DeBrincat closed the books with an empty net goal in the third.

Star 1: Wayne Messmer

With the Blackhawks celebrating the Chicago Stadium tonight, having Messmer in the 300 level standing next to the old organ to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” like back in the day was remarkable. I didn’t think we would ever see him back in this arena. Lots of feels before the game began.

I’m 45 & grew up going to the old barn

And now I’m a mess

This was incredible. Well done, #Blackhawks

Well done indeed 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/R6S9VnrNQd

— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) December 14, 2025

Star 2: Nick Lardis

In his first period in the NHL, Lardis skated 4:01 and was credited with one hit and had one shot miss the mark. His line with Oliver Moore and one of Ryan Greene or Frank Nazar was decent. He got to slide into Connor Bedard‘s spot on the top power play unit immediately. At the end of two periods, Lardis was tied for the Blackhawks’ team lead with four hits. He looked like an NHL player in the midst of an underwhelming team performance. He led the Blackhawks with eight shot attempts by the end of the night.

Lardis rips a shot off the post pic.twitter.com/32nwbA9udO

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 14, 2025

Star 3: Colton Dach

Dach was buzzing all night. At the end of the second period, he led the Blackhawks with six shot attempts (three on net), two high danger chances and four hits in 8:52 on the ice. Unlike many of his teammates, Dach was noticeable on most of his shifts.

Key Takeaways

  • The Blackhawks actually had a 20-11 shot attempt advantage at 5-on-5 and matched the Red Wings’ four high dangers chances in the first period. Chicago’s speed had a few chances to make something happen, but the Hawks didn’t finish when they got there.
  • The Blackhawks won 19 of 32 faceoffs (59 percent) thru two periods. Nazar won 6 of 9 and Greene won 5 of 7 in the first two periosd.
  • Without Bedard, the power play looked lost.

Lardis’ Debut, Bedard Update, an Incredible Anthem, Pridham Hat Trick, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Let’s start with where the game began last night. I made Wayne Messmer my No. 1 star in my postgame thoughts last night because the Blackhawks weren’t great (got shutout). But that was truly a great moment. The Blackhawks are really doing a great job with their Centennial celebration, but not everything you would love to see celebrated can be possible. One of the things I didn’t think was possible was Messmer coming back to a Blackhawks game to sing the anthem. Last night, he did — right next to the old organ in the balcony like it was back in the day.

Even Patrick Kane was impressed by the anthem last night. He talked about it after the game (video courtesy Charlie Roumeliotis)

Patrick Kane on United Center anthem: "I don't know if I kind of forgot how it was or you take it for granted but the national anthem was incredible. It was really loud tonight. • Nick Lardis made his NHL debut last night. He got things started with a bucketless rookie lap. Once the game began, Lardis looked increasingly comfortable out there. He admitted after the game that early on he was a little starstruck with Kane and Alex DeBrincat on the other side. Lardis tried to generate offense but, like his teammates, wasn’t able to finish. I liked what I saw, and head coach Jeff Blashill liked his game as well.

  • Well, this is kinda crazy. Last year, when the Blackhawks recalled Frank Nazar, he had 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 21 games with the IceHogs. He got the call on December 13. This year, Nick Lardis comes up on… December 13. And Lardis has 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) in 24 games with Rockford.
Frank Nazar had a fun little fact about Nick Lardis' recall from Rockford. It occurred on the same day, Dec. 13, as Nazar's did last season.

  • Terrific read from Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff on Marek Vanacker‘s late invite to Hockey Canada’s camp to set their World Juniors roster. Vanacker skated on the left side of Canada’s fourth line at practice on Saturday (per Scott Wheeler).
I asked Canadian #WorldJuniors coach Dale Hunter if having #Blackhawks' Marek Vanacker on his team is more fun than facing off against him.

"Oh, definitely," he said, with a big smile.

  • The Vancouver Canucks put Lukas Reichel on waivers yesterday. Please, for the love of everything sacred, please do not ask if the Blackhawks should put in a claim. The Blackhawks tried to trade Reichel for almost two years. They sent him to Vancouver for almost nothing — and the Canucks overpaid. We’ve seen Reichel. We know him. Thinking about this should last about as long as a fart in a hurricane.

  • Let’s stick with the Canucks for a moment, however. Pierre LeBrun at The Athletic got all of the good inside dirt on how the Quinn Hughes trade went down. He reports the teams that were apparently involved in the bidding were the Devils, Red Wings, Rangers, and “to some degree,” Carolina and Buffalo. Terrific reporting here. LeBrun also reports the “Flyers were among the teams that kicked tires but didn’t get to the next level.”

Blackhawks Head Coach Jeff Blashill Talks About Connor Bedard’s Injury (Sort Of)

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill talked roughly seven hours before the Blackhawks host the Red Wings on Saturday. That isn’t a normal timeline for a head coach talking on the second day of a back-to-back with travel between games and no morning skate; usually the coach will talk a couple hours before the game starts.

Obviously, the circumstances were slightly different for the Blackhawks head coach on Saturday. His best player, Connor Bedard, suffered an injury inside the final second (singular) of regulation and will not play against the Detroit Red Wings in Chicago on Saturday night. Nick Lardis will make his NHL debut, getting the call from Rockford with Bedard not available.

Did Blashill have a significant update on Bedard’s status when he spoke to the four of us who made the drive in around lunchtime? Not really.

The update on Connor Bedard from #Blackhawks HC Jeff Blashill is: there is no update pic.twitter.com/YHqy1wQJfo

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) December 13, 2025
“I don’t have any update,” Blashill said. “I knew I wasn’t going to yesterday. He’s undergoing further evaluation, so we’ll know more in the next couple of days. I just don’t want to say stuff that’s not super accurate”

When asked about the role the perceived check/shove from Blues captain Brayden Schenn played in injuring Bedard, Blashill actually said a couple interesting things.

“First of all, Brayden Schenn’s a really good hockey player,” Blashill said. “He’s not trying to do damage to him there. He literally, Connor gets injured before any push happens, to be honest with you. So it really had no bearing on the play. It’s super unfortunate. Point 8 seconds left, we didn’t foresee that happening.”

The part about Bedard getting hurt before the contact from Schenn was interesting.

The other thing Blashill said that was subtle but got my attention was part of his response when asked about Lardis being called up.

“I know for sure Connor’s not playing tonight, so we just felt it gives us another potential offensive guy that can come in and provide some scoring punch.”

When Nick Foligno got hurt, Blashill was pretty confident/comfortable telling us pretty quickly that it was probably a four-week injury and not of the eight-week variety. Him limiting his comment here to “Connor’s not playing tonight” gave me at least a little hope that maybe this isn’t necessarily a longer term (days, not weeks) situation.

Around the NHL: Sabres Fire GM, Kane Hurt, Zibanejad Scratched, Trade Rumors, More

There’s a lot going on around the NHL on Monday, including a general manager getting canned. That, some significant injury news — including two former Blackhawks — and a couple veteran names getting tossed into trade speculation means it’s a good time for us to take a quick lap around the NHL.

Adams Out in Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres have fired general manager Kevyn Adams. Jarmo Kekäläinen will take over as the new GM in Buffalo.

Kekäläinen was the first European-born general manager in NHL history, spending parts of 12 seasons as general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets (2013 to 2024). He also held front office jobs in St. Louis and Ottawa. The Sabres brought him in as an advisor in May.

We’ll see if this leads to any significant roster adjusting in Buffalo. They’re riding the longest playoff drought in the NHL.

Injury Issues Continue

Connor Bedard going on IR isn’t the only big injury news in the NHL on Monday.

  • Patrick Kane apparently got hurt (upper-body) playing the Blackhawks this weekend and will Detroit’s next two games.
  • The San Jose Sharks placed both Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev on injured reserve.
  • The St. Louis Blues announced forward Dylan Holloway is going to be out for at least six weeks because of an ankle injury suffered in practice. Forward Alexey Toropchenko was activated from IR in the corresponding move.
Dylan Holloway sustained a right ankle injury in Sunday's practice and will be re-evaluated in six weeks. https://t.co/El20bx6PT2

Odds & Ends

  • In this week’s “too little, too late” trade rumors: Kevin Weekes tweeted on Monday that he’s hearing the New Jersey Devils are shopping defenseman Dougie Hamilton and forward Ondrej Palat. Maybe they should have cleared cap space before Quinn Hughes got traded to Minnesota?
  • After missing the Penguins’ game against the Sharks this weekend, Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak have made it through the immigration process and were added to the Pens’ active roster on Monday.
  • The Oilers announced they’ve recalled forward Quinn Hutson from AHL Bakersfield.
Lukas Reichel will be reporting to Abbotsford until a trade happens.

Connor Bedard Placed on IR (UPDATE), Blackhawks Recall Two from Rockford

The Blackhawks announced some roster moves before practice on Monday morning in Chicago.

  • Connor Bedard (upper body) was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Dec. 12.
  • Defenseman Ethan Del Mastro was recalled from Rockford.
  • Goaltender Laurent Brossoit was recalled from Rockford.

After practice, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said Bedard “will be reevaluated after the New Year.” The Blackhawks have seven games between now and the end of the calendar year, and host the Dallas Stars on New Year’s Day. Bedard does not need surgery.

“He’s been really smart about not over-training,” Blashill said. “His attitude is good. I think he wants to be back next week, that’s the approach he takes.”

Bedard will be reevaluated after the New Year. Blashill said the prognosis “could be worse” and Bedard wants to be considered “day to day.” pic.twitter.com/Gy1MUuIIaT

— jon greenberg (@jon_greenberg) December 15, 2025

Del Mastro, 22, comes back to Chicago after producing 11 points in 27 games with Rockford this season. A left-handed defenseman, he’s been playing the right side on the IceHogs’ top pair recently. He’s a big, physical defenseman. The Blackhawks will have seven defensemen available for their road trip should they choose to go back to an 11-7 lineup.

UPDATE II: Brossoit returned from his rehab assignment, but only briefly. The Blackhawks will place Brossoit on waivers Monday with hopes of him going back to Rockford to get some more run. It will be very interesting to see if he clears. There’s been trade speculation around him since he started getting close to returning.

Laurent Brossoit will be placed on waivers today, Blashill said. If he clears, he will go back down to Rockford.

Blackhawks at Maple Leafs — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

The Blackhawks hit the road to swing thru some big Canadian markets and they start in Toronto without Connor Bedard. Obviously that isn’t ideal.

But the Leafs are seventh in the Atlantic Division and have 33 points in 31 games; the Blackhawks have 32 points in 32 games. Toronto is allowing the second-most shots on net per game (31.5) in the NHL (the Hawks are fifth-worst at 30.3). The Leafs’ power play ranks 30th in the league. This is not a dominant Toronto team to fear going in.

Note: it looks like Artyom Levshunov is getting the night off after arriving late and having a rough practice on Monday.

  • With the offense finding ways to score without Bedard, the Blackhawks will likely need Knight to be on his game to keep them in it.
  • The Leafs will get Woll back between the pipes after he missed four games because of an injury.

Blackhawks 2, Maple Leafs 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

If you tuned into tonight’s game looking for some offensive firepower early, I’m sorry. The two teams combined to put three shots on net in the first 10+ minutes of action. Of course the game game back from a commercial break and the Blackhawks scored on the fourth shot of the game. The Blackhawks’ speed was a problem for the Leafs all over the ice and they controlled most of the first period.

Craig Berube wasn’t a happy camper behind the Leafs’ bench tonight. Toronto pushed back and had a few chances early in the second period, but the Blackhawks speed continued to expose the lack thereof on the Leafs’ roster as the period progressed. Neither side scored in the middle stanza.

In the middle of the third period, you could hear the booing of the Leafs from their home fans. So of course they scored off a faceoff to cut the Blackhawks’ lead in half. When the Leafs got a power play inside the final four minutes of regulation, Auston Matthews scored on his first credited shot on goal in the game. Dakota Joshua then scored eight seconds later to give the Leafs a 3-2 lead. The Hawks passed the puck about five times more than they should have inside the final 20 seconds of regulation and failed to get a real shot on net.

This is a tough loss.

Star 1: Jason Dickinson

Dickinson’s line got to see a lot of Auston Matthews early on Tuesday night — and they were good. In the first period, Dickinson was credited with a team-high two hits and scored the Blackhawks’ second goal (twice). After his first “goal” was taken off the board after a review, he scored a short-handed goal they couldn’t take away. Dickinson took 22 of 49 total faceoffs in the game for the Blackhawks.

Star 2: Wyatt Kaiser

Another good night for Kaiser, who was skating primarily with Matt Grzelcyk. They’re both left-handed, so with Artyom Levshunov scratched Grzelcyk played a lot on his off-side. Kaiser’s patience on the first goal of the night was impressive. He was physical on both ends of the ice and was smart with the puck.

GOAL: Dominic Toninato tips in Wyatt Kaiser's shot to get the Blackhawks on the board! pic.twitter.com/2x63JxFzGu

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 17, 2025

Star 3: Frank Nazar

Nazar had a really good night defensively. He created a second scoring chance on the penalty kill in the first period and then broke up a potential scoring chance for Toronto in the middle of the second period. Nazar led the Blackhawks in shot attempts, scoring chances and high danger chances. He continues to weaponize his speed and his effort is making a difference, even if the goals haven’t come yet.

Key Takeaways

  • Spencer Knight had a good night until the wheels fell off in the third period. It’s a shame the Blackhawks wasted is effort tonight.
  • At 11:27 into the first, it appeared Dickinson scored a second goal for the Blackhawks. After a challenge by Toronto (the team), Toronto (the league office) ruled there was goaltender interference and the goal was taken off the board.
  • Ethan Del Mastro had a really good first period. He skated 5:28 at 5-on-5 in the first, during which the Blackhawks had a 6-2 shot attempt advantage. Del Mastro had a team-high three shots attempts in the first and one scoring chance. Yes, he got stripped by Scott Laughton that led to a Leafs power play. But overall, his first period was solid. Overall I thought Del Mastro showed well in his return to the NHL.
  • Louis Crevier led all Blackhawks skaters in the first period, skating 8:07. He started the rush that ended in Dickinson’s short-handed goal. He added one blocked shot and a shot on net of his own to that assist in the opening 20 minutes. He was having a good night until Joshua just out-worked him to score the go-ahead goal.
  • The Blackhawks’ young line of Nick Lardis, Ryan Greene and Oliver Moore was a problem for Toronto. Lardis made this sweet pass to set up a potential scoring chance for Moore early in the second period. Greene finished the night tied for the team lead with three hits and won 5 of 8 faceoffs.

Connor Bedard’s Incredible Start, Updated Olympic Chances

Fans who have watched Connor Bedard thus far this season have seen him take a big jump in almost every aspect of his game. He has become the superstar the Blackhawks selected first overall, and is jump-starting the talk about his “generational talent” that we read so much about before he was drafted.

Bedard has also gone from “a guy Canada might think about but it’s a long shot” to “a guy who should be on the Olympic roster” in a few short months of dominant hockey.

With Bedard on the sidelines because of injury for the next couple weeks, the Blackhawks are going to have to figure out how to generate offense without him. There have been a few posts about just how good Bedard has been to start the season in the last couple days that are worth some your time and consideration.

Bedard’s outstanding start

First off, a really good deep dive piece from Paul Pidutti (aka AdjustedHockey) at Daily Faceoff about the remarkable seasons being produced by four emerging NHL stars. “Using era adjusted stats to level the intergenerational playing field, we’re exploring the feats of four phenoms: Matthew Schaefer (18 years old); Macklin Celebrini (19); Connor Bedard (20); and Leo Carlsson (21 next week). The future has arrived.”

Here’s part of what Pidutti wrote about Bedard’s season to date:

Bedard’s upper-body injury will temporarily halt a fun breakout by a special player saddled with immense expectations. An offseason focus on speed and explosiveness — supported by NHL Edge metrics — has been a key factor in Bedard’s glow up. Some of us thought his launch would happen last season but his sophomore showing didn’t move the needle. A slower but steady road to superstardom like Patrick Kane remained a great path. Instead, Bedard has gone nuclear through 31 games. The pace the third-year center is riding has few equals among 20-year-olds. Bedard’s era adjusted point rate stares up at only Gretzky and Crosby. Bedard’s sniping pace hangs with Alex Ovechkin’s 20-year-old rookie season. Take it away, Panger: “Holy jumpin’!” While Chicago is improving and new talent is marinating around Bedard, he’s often been a one-man show, dragging the Hawks from the NHL’s cellar.

Bedard’s Olympic chances

Bedard’s injury may have caused some pause from a few folks out there regarding his shot at making Canada’s roster for the Olympics, especially because the roster will be announced on New Year’s Eve — before he’s expected to return to the Blackhawks’ lineup.

But, if he’s healthy by February, why wouldn’t Bedard be on the roster?

Before he got hurt, TSN’s Craig Button and Mike Johnson put together their updated consensus roster for Canada at the Olympics. They have Bedard playing the right wing on Canada’s top line with Sidney Crosby on the left side and Nathan MacKinnon between them. Oh my! Here’s their roster breakdown:

Matt Larkin at Daily Faceoff updated his roster projections for Canada on Tuesday. He does not have Bedard on the roster, but says he would be the toughest cut.

It’s been a ton of fun watching Connor Bedard level up into borderline superstardom this season, but I still expect Canada to bring only one of Bedard and Celebrini, and I believe Celebrini being a good soldier attending the 2025 World Championship will break the tie. Perhaps Bedard’s upper-body injury makes the decision easier, too.

The fabulous Dom Luszczyszyn updated his projections for Canada’s roster at the upcoming Winter Olympics at The Athletic on Wednesday morning. He has Bedard on a second line that I consider… well, dead sexy. Two Connors and a Macklin? Hoo boy!

image-70.png

Source: The Athletic

Here’s part of what he wrote about Canada considering both Bedard and Macklin Celebrini for the roster:

Can you really bring both youngsters?
Yes, you can and should — although after doing the work, I can see why Connor Bedard’s case might be a little softer.

What Bedard and Macklin Celebrini are doing this year on two otherwise terrible teams has been out-of-this-world good. On a per-game basis, there’s an argument to be made that the only two Canadian forwards who bring more impact offensively are McDavid and MacKinnon. What they’ve done with so little help shouldn’t be ignored; it’s firepower that shouldn’t be left at home.

The question for both regards their defensive game. Their numbers aren’t great, but Celebrini has the tools while Bedard has made serious strides this season. Their defensive numbers would probably look a lot better if they had a single legit top-four defenseman to play with. On Team Canada, that obviously won’t be a problem and a shift to the wing also lessens their defensive load.

The other concern is where they fit in this lineup. I think the argument that they “can’t play in the bottom six” is genuine, but also silly considering who Canada’s other wingers are.

We’re going to have to wait until Dec. 31 to find out the final selections for Canada. Certainly, the remarkable start to the season has put Bedard not only in the conversation for the Olympics, but back into some elite, historic company for players at his current age.

Want vs. Need, Vlasic’s PIM, Brossoit Clears, Hogs Outdoors, Saban Buys In, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The loss in Toronto last night sucks. There’s really no other way to put it, even after sleeping on it. It’s a hard one to take because, as Jason Dickinson said after the game, it seemed like the Blackhawks played about 50 minutes of ideal hockey. They were structured. Their speed was giving the Leafs problems. They were creating — and taking advantage of — opportunities while limited the Leafs’ chances.

And then the final four minutes happened.

The way the game ended last night is an example of want vs. need. The Blackhawks wanted to win. The Maple Leafs needed to win.

If you read anything out of Canadian media in the couple days before the game, there was everything from “there needs to be a big shake-up” to “is Berube’s job on the line?” The Leafs got booed off the ice at the end of the first period. It was louder after 40 minutes. And it was noticeably increasing before the media stoppage that came just before the Leafs scored their first goal.

The Maple Leafs have big expectations on them to win, and they’ve been bad.

The Blackhawks have hopes of showing significant improvement from last year. And they’ve been… okay for the most part.

One team wanted to win. The other needed to win. And, as is often the case, need defeated want.

  • A seemingly crazy note from last night: Alex Vlasic was called for a (soft) penalty late in the second period. That was the first minor penalty called on Vlasic this season. Last night was his 32nd appearance.
  • Laurent Brossoit cleared waivers on Tuesday. He’ll head back to Rockford and get some more run; the Hawks assigned him to the IceHogs on Tuesday. I’m sure the Blackhawks will continue to shop him, and can now see if their options improve with salary retention. During the pregame show last night, Frank Seravalli said the Hawks “didn’t really receive much of any activity at all” in looking for a Brossoit trade before now. Again: he’s appeared in 3 AHL games in almost two years. At $3.3M, everyone needs to see more.
  • The Blackhawks are expected to practice in Montreal this afternoon. We’ll see how things shake out with Artyom Levshunov hoping to get back into the lineup after he was a healthy scratch last night.
  • The NHL writers at The Athletic put together a list of the fastest rising prospects in every organization thus far this season. Scott Powers took care of the Blackhawks’ pipeline, and he named forward Roman Kantserov. Here’s what he wrote:
Kantserov, a 2023 second-round draft pick, looked like he had a chance to be a decent prospect after the last couple of seasons in the KHL. He’s gone to a whole other level this season. Through 34 games, he leads the KHL with 22 goals and is tied for second in 39 points. Kirill Kaprizov was the last player around that age to produce similarly in the KHL. With increased production, Kantserov looks a lot more like a top-six NHL winger. His KHL contract expires after this season, and he is expected to sign and join the Blackhawks next season.
  • For those starting to look ahead at the 2026 NHL Draft — especially with the Blackhawks owning two first-round picks and three more in the second — here’s a good read on the recent World Junior A Challenge from David St-Louis at Elite Prospects.

Artyom Levshunov Will Be a Healthy Scratch in Toronto

After the morning skate, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed that rookie defenseman Artyom Levshunov will be a healthy scratch on Tuesday night in Toronto.

Levshunov was late getting to the rink for practice on Monday, so it was disciplinary — not based on his play. This is another reminder that this season is about setting standards for everyone involved. I like the move by head coach Jeff Blashill.

It helps that the Blackhawks called up a seventh defenseman before the issue arose, too. Ethan Del Mastro will draw into the lineup for Levshunov and the Blackhawks will skate 12 forwards.

Matt Grzelcyk was running the top power play at the morning skate and Wyatt Kaiser was running the second unit for the Blackhawks with Levshunov getting a night off.

Blackhawks at Canadiens — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

After a massively disappointing loss in Toronto, the Blackhawks will look to bounce back in Montreal against a Canadiens team that’s hanging around the edges of the playoff picture. The Habs are banged up right now, and haven’t been great defensively. The Blackhawks are still without their most important offensive player.

If the Blackhawks can play a full 60 minutes the way they played the first 55 in Toronto, they can skate out of Montreal with a win. Let’s see if they can put together a complete effort tonight. I haven’t seen lines from the morning skate, but with Artyom Levshunov back in the lineup I’m assuming the Hawks go back to 11-7. We’ll see if that’s the case during warm-ups.

Injury Report

Chicago Blackhawks

  • Connor Bedard and Nick Foligno are on IR. Shea Weber (retired) is out long term.

Montreal Canadiens

  • Sam Montembeault, David Reinbacher and Mike Matheson are out. Kirby Dach, Alex Newhook, Patrik Laine and Kaiden Guhle are on IR.

What to Watch For

  • The Blackhawks need goals. Bedard is still out. Who steps up?
  • Levshunov will draw back in tonight. He was a healthy scratch for the home opener, so this will be the first time he plays head-to-head against Demidov. And Levshunov is coming off a disciplinary scratch in Toronto. He’s got something to prove, and will be back on the power play tonight.
  • The Habs have been disappointingly mediocre on home ice this year (8-9-1). And they’re allowing the most goals per game in the NHL (3.48 – tied with Nashville for last in the league). There will be opportunities for the Blackhawks to score.

Get Caught Up

Blackhawks 1, Canadiens 4 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

It took 4:07 for this game to have a shot on net credited. The shot came from Alex Vlasic — and it went in. But, after review, it was ruled there was goaltender interference (which took the shot on net and the goal off the board). At that point, we got just the second faceoff in the game. The Blackhawks did score first, but the Habs were able to answer seven minutes later. The Blackhawks were officially out-shot 7-2 in the first but were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The second period saw the Blackhawks making fans on social media write like fans in the 300 level shout during games. Shoot the puck! Lots of looks, not much rubber on net. Late in the second, it appeared the Canadiens took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal. But the Blackhawks challenged the play was offside — and won! The numbers were strongly in favor of Montreal before they got two late power plays in the period, but the game remained tied.

Unfortunately, a funky ricochet fooled Knight 20 seconds into the third period and Montreal took the lead. 53 seconds later, Montreal scored again to add to their lead… but the Blackhawks challenged this, too, was offside. And it was. For a second time in the game, the Blackhawks won a challenge and stayed within one. The Canadiens got a fluky third goal and a fourth into the empty net.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

You can go ahead and hit the reset button the “days since Nazar scored a goal” board because, for the first time since Oct. 28, he put the puck in the net! The goal came at 7:27 into the first period and was the Blackhawks’ first shot officially credited as being on net. Nazar had a lot of giddyup all night and was one of few guys on the roster consistently looking to shoot the puck. At the end of two periods, Nazar had three individual scoring chances; nobody else on the Chicago roster had more than one.

GOAL: Grzelcyk to Nazar who's FINALLY on the board! pic.twitter.com/R4QpzwQH42

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 19, 2025

Star 2: Spencer Knight

This game was tied after two periods because Knight was awesome in the second. He officially faced 16 shots in the middle frame and stopped them all. The Canadiens had 13 high danger chances in the opening 40 minutes but only one goal to show for it. Montreal’s third goal looked like Knight thought he had it and batted it in with his glove.

Star 3: Matt Grzelcyk

Grzelcyk had the primary assist on Nazar’s goal and was the Blackhawks’ best defenseman at trying to generate offense.

Key Takeaways

  • The Canadiens put 16 shots on net in the second period. The Blackhawks put 15 shots on net in the game. That can’t happen, even if Montreal is one of the better shot blocking teams in the league.
  • You know that goal took a weight off Nazar’s back!

  • Artyom Levshunov returned to the lineup and led the team with 6:57 of ice time and two hits in the first period. He was on the ice for six of the Blackhawks’ 12 shot attempts in the first period as well. He led Blackhawks defensemen in ice time in the game (21:58).
  • Colton Dach got mixed up with Arber Xhekaj late in the first period and appeared to be in a good amount of pain on the bench. Thankfully, he was able to stay in the game. Here’s the contact:
Colton Dach is hunched over in pain on the bench after getting tangled up with Xhekaj pic.twitter.com/8PCjZo0Lh6

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 19, 2025
  • The Blackhawks won only 11 of 32 faceoffs thru two periods (34 percent). Ryan Greene won four of eight. Jason Dickinson was once again taking the largest share at the dot; he won just four of 13 thru two periods. For Montreal, Jake Evans won nine of ten in the first two periods.
  • The kids line of Greene, Nick Lardis and Oliver Moore had a tough night. They were the Blackhawks’ worst in shot attempts percentage, and the Hawks didn’t put a shot on net while they were on the ice.
  • Here’s the goaltender interference from the first period:

Marek Vanacker Cut From Canada’s World Junior Camp

On Thursday morning, Hockey Canada announced three players were sent back to their junior clubs. Included: Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker.

ROSTER UPDATE | 🇨🇦’s National Junior Team has returned the following players to their club teams.

MISE À JOUR | L’équipe nationale junior du 🇨🇦 a renvoyé les joueurs suivants à leurs équipes de club.

-Jake O'Brien
-Jackson Smith
-Marek Vanacker#WorldJuniors | #MondialJunior

— Hockey Canada (@HockeyCanada) December 18, 2025

This is disappointing, but not a shock. Vanacker was a late invite to Canada’s pre-tournament camp for evaluation and didn’t blow anyone away in their first practice game.

Vanacker and Jake O’Brien will both head back to Brantford to continue their successful seasons in the OHL. Vanacker still leads the OHL with 26 goals — four more than any other player.

Blackhawks Announce Star-Studded Centennial Championship(s) Celebration

On Friday morning, the Blackhawks announced some details of the next on-ice celebration of their Centennial season.

On Friday, Jan. 17 with the Boston Bruins are in town, the first 8,000 fans to enter the United Center will receive an exclusive Duncan Keith bobblehead giveaway. The pregame ceremony will focus on “The Banner Years” — celebrating the six Stanley Cup championships in franchise history.

In addition to the Keith bobbleheads, the Blackhawks announced 25 players from the dynasty teams of the 2010s will be in attendance. And there are some fan favorites included. Here’s the full list (subject to change):

Unfortunately, the two faces of the franchise on those rosters — captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane — are still active. Toews’ return to Chicago as a visitor for the first time will take place two days later when the Jets land at the United Center.

Lineup Changes the Blackhawks Should Consider to Drive More Offense

The Blackhawks have now played (and lost) three games without Connor Bedard in the lineup. In those three games, the Blackhawks have been outscored 11-3. And they’re averaging only 22 shots on goal per game.

Obviously losing Bedard takes their most important, productive player out of the lineup. But the Blackhawks have been searching for combinations on lines without Bedard to consistently create offense for longer than he’s been out.

The Blackhawks were able to do some good things early in the season, but opponents have made adjustments. Now, it’s time for the Blackhawks to adjust to those changes. Bedard being out of the lineup gives the Blackhawks more of an opportunity to experiment with some lineups to see where there might be chemistry that works.

Here are three changes I would make before the Blackhawks take the ice in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon and a proposed lineup to see if they can at minimum see more shots on net, if not more shots going in.

Frank Nazar Chicago Blackhawks

Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

Put Nazar and Teräväinen back together

This one feels pretty simple for me. When Frank Nazar and Teuvo Teräväinen have been on the ice together, they’re both better. Natural Stat Trick tell us (at 5-0n-5) the Blackhawks have out-scored their opponents 12-10 when Nazar and Teräväinen are on the ice together. Nazar without Teräväinen: 4 Blackhawks goals to 10 for the opposition. Teräväinen without Nazar: 1 Blackhawks goal to 7 for the wrong side.

In 243:43 together at even strength this season, the Blackhawks have a 9.47 expected goals for with these two on the ice together.

If we add Tyler Bertuzzi to that mix — a trio that’s been on the ice for 127:24 together at 5-on-5 — the Blackhawks have a 51.45 Corsi For percentage and have out-scored opponents 7-4.

Ryan Donato Chicago Blackhawks

Matt Marton-Imagn Images

Try Donato with Burakovsky more

Ryan Donato and André Burakovsky have only spent 29:49 together thus far at 5-on-5. But they have a 53.03 Corsi For percentage when they’re on the ice together in that time; they’re both at 48 percent when they’re separated.

Donato is a trigger man; Burakovsky carries the puck and enters the zone well. The Blackhawks have also generated 18 scoring chances and six high danger chances in that limited amount of ice time. Give it a look.

If we add Ryan Greene to this line, it would give us a larger sample size to digest with Burakovsky. I will note that the majority of the time those two have been on the ice together has been with Bedard; they’ve only spent 20:58 together without Bedard. But they do have a decent overall sample size (189:36 total 5-on-5 ice time together).

Nick Lardis Chicago Blackhawks

Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

Limit Lardis — somewhat

Nick Lardis has the ability to generate offense, we saw that in his first NHL game. And I can appreciate the coaches putting him on a line with Greene and Oliver Moore because of their familiarity with each other. Moore and Lardis spent time together in Rockford and both performed well. But we now have a three-game sample size in the NHL, and breaking them up might make more sense.

When Moore has been on the ice in the NHL at 5-on-5 without Lardis, the Blackhawks have a 48.56 Corsi For percentage. When Moore and Lardis are on the ice together (27:22 at 5-on-5), the Blackhawks have a 38.30 Corsi For percentage. The Blackhawks have 42 high danger chances and have been out-scored 13-11 when Moore is on the ice without Lardis at 5-on-5. The Blackhawks have an expected Goals For percentage of 53.24 with Moore on the ice at 5-on-5 without Lardis.

If the Blackhwaks put Moore’s speed on a line with Ilya Mikheyev, that could be scary for opponents.

This isn’t a knock on Lardis, but he’s the newest guy to come up. The Blackhawks have effectively sheltered Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel in their roles in the NHL this season. Why not employ a similar strategy with Lardis?

Potential Lineup with Tweaks

Ryan Donato — Ryan Greene — André Burakovsky
Oliver Moore — Jason Dickinson — Ilya Mikheyev
