Blackhawks at Golden Knights — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

The Blackhawks begin a busy month of December with a western road trip beginning tonight in Vegas — against a goaltender who hasn’t appeared in an NHL game in 22 months. Carter Hart will be between the pipes for the Golden Knights when the puck drops against the Hawks tonight.

Connor Bedard will look to carry his electric November performance into the new calendar month and lead the Blackhawks to a big road win. Get your coffee on, because it’s a late start — and it’s only streaming tonight (don’t blame me!).

Vegas Golden Knights

  • Alex Pietrangelo, Adin Hill, William Karlsson and Jeremy Lauzon are on IR.

What to Watch For

  • Hart will start for the first time since January 2024. The Blackhawks should test him early — and, preferably, often.

Connor Bedard wasn't the only #Blackhawks player who had a strong month of November. Chicago had a top-2 power play and had skaters among the league leaders in a few areas.

A Late Night Beauty, West on Ice, Brossoit Back, 2 for Pridham, Busy Blues, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

If you stayed up late enough to watch all the way to the end of an extended shootout that ended just a few minutes before midnight, you were treated to an outstanding hockey game. That was a Vegas team with Stanley Cup aspirations and the game was played at a playoff level. Spencer Knight and Carter Hart were both spectacular in net. Connor Bedard put on a show. It’s an absolute shame the Blackhawks didn’t walk away with two points, but that was a great game to watch.

  • With two points last night, Tyler Bertuzzi extended his personal streak to five straight multi-point road games. The only other Blackhawks to do that in the history of the franchise: Denis Savard and Bobby Hull. Pretty good company!
  • Bedard attempted nine shots last night. His goal in regulation was ridiculous. His shootout goal was filthy. He was the highlight reel among the skaters in the game last night. The goalies stole the show, but Bedard was the best player in the game.
  • Frank Nazar had a nice night. He attempted seven shots (three on net) and won half of his 12 faceoffs. As I mentioned in my postgame notes, Nazar has an assist in seven of his last nine games. He had a few great looks at the net tonight and couldn’t get the safety off in time. At some point, he’s going to find the back of the net and I think there’s going to be a run from Nazar.
  • I didn’t mention Ryan Greene last night but he had a really strong game as well. He won the faceoff against Jack Eichel to begin overtime; Greene won 11 of 14 draws and blocked two shots in 20:57. His assist on Bedard’s goal in the third period extended his point streak to three games.
  • In the only game on the slate in the OHL last night, Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham scored twice for the Kitchener Rangers. His second goal came on the power play in a 3-2 loss to Erie.

  • State champion quarterback and Blackhawks first-round pick Mason West was on the ice with Fargo. Pics or it didn’t happen? Here you go! That’s him in green on the lower left.
  • Dana Grey shared a nice clip of Laurent Brossoit working between the pipes with the IceHogs on Tuesday morning. The Blackhawks finally activated Brossoit earlier yesterday.

  • The Rockford IceHogs announced defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald will miss to three to four weeks with a lower body injury.
  • It sounds like things are going incredible… well… getting ready for ice hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

  • Tuesday was a busy (putting it nicely?) day in St. Louis. The Blues announced winger Nathan Walker was placed on injured reserve (upper-body). Walker will be re-evaluated in eight weeks.
  • Staying in St. Louis, Jordan Binnington got pulled quickly on Monday night and appeared to share a few thoughts with his head coach, Jim Montgomery, on his way to the bench. Here he is talking about it the next day. Doesn’t give off “happy camper” vibes, eh?

  • The St. Louis Blues also made a minor trade on Tuesday. The Blues acquired forward Akil Thomas from the Los Angeles Kings for forward Nikita Alexandrov.
  • After the trade with St. Louis, the Kings announced they signed Kings signed forward Samuel Helenius to a two-year contract. Helenius, 23, was a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
  • Tough injury news for Philadelphia: forward Tyson Foerster will be out 2-3 months with an upper-body injury.

MUST READ: On Connor Bedard’s “Leap” to Superstardom

On a lovely, snowy, day-after-a-late-game Wednesday for Blackhawks fans, I want to share a terrific, highly recommended read from Dom Luszczyszyn and Sean Gentille at The Athletic. Especially after the absolute show he put on in Vegas last night, it’s a great perspective on Connor Bedard‘s ascent to the elite tier of NHL superstars this season.

The piece isn’t exclusively about Bedard; Macklin Celebrini and Leo Carlsson are both also on ridiculous paces to have huge, breakout seasons. But the deep dive is worth your time. They look into what each of the three has done to not turn a corner, but sprint up the stairs in the NHL — and how that historically compares to the current generation’s “franchise” players, and when those players saw a significant statistical jump in production into that “elite” tier.

This graphic gives you a very, very surface-level look at some of the other “franchise” players they considered:

image-7.png

Source: The Athletic
That hint toward something special was also evident for Bedard and Celebrini and while each player’s growth differed, the end goal was the same: Turning those dominant flashes into consistent greatness. It’s those types of players who can change the game in more ways than one.

Here’s part of what they wrote about Bedard:

Bedard, coming off a relatively underwhelming second NHL season, had a bit more room for improvement. That’s evident in his skating; he now ranks in the 92nd percentile or better in 18-20 mph bursts, 20-22 mph bursts and 22-plus mph bursts. In the latter two categories, he’s already topped his totals from 2024-25. Physical maturation and improvement, especially for players in their teens or early 20s, count for plenty.

What might be bigger for Bedard, though, is a better understanding of the mental side of the game. He’s got more than two seasons’ worth of NHL games under his belt at this point, the coach said, and it’s easy to see.

“I think a lot of people might say something along the lines of ‘He’s simplified his game.’ I don’t think that’s true,” the coach said. “I think he’s a creative, dynamic offensive mind who’s figured out what’s worked and, more importantly, some stuff that won’t work.

“For elite players that are dominating at their previous level, it’s hard to accept, ‘Hey, you’ve got holes now.’ It took him two years to say, ‘OK, I get it now, and I’m willing to change stuff and adjust my approach.’ For players that are that good, what they need to understand is there are certain things they have to do consistently that will enable them to use their unique ability.”

The scout put it more succinctly: “He went to the well with the s— that worked in juniors. Subsequently, the reason why he’s so much better this year is that he’s learned different dimensions to play the game and different ways to solve problems.”

Luszczyszyn tweeted an individual player card for Bedard (and Celebrini and Carlsson) on Wednesday as well:

image-8.png

Source: Twitter/X

What’s interesting about this player card graphic is it gives us a “market value” of Bedard’s performance and has some projections into the future. These projections do fluctuate as a player’s performance goes up and down, but I think we’re at a point now where things like this get filed away for when the Blackhawks and Bedard announce his second NHL contract in the coming months.

Again, marvelous read. Recommend you spend a few minutes in it.

"There are other young guys who are 'maybes.' Leo Carlsson, Macklin Celebrini, Connor Bedard — they're 'for sures.'"

Canada is expected to announce their preliminary roster for the World Juniors on Monday, so we’ll have to wait and see if either Sacha Boisvert or John Mustard gets an invite there.

With all of that excitement for Blackhawks prospects, it doesn’t change the schedule. And there are still games to be played in the college ranks over three days this weekend. Here’s the schedule and your weekly stat updates.

Teuvo’s Spin, Canada’s Decisions, Playoffs? Prospects in Action, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I would like to start our Friday with a fabulous read on the magic of Teuvo Teräväinen. The Blackhawks “throwing him in” on the deal that sent Bryan Bickell’s contract to Carolina in 2016 is one of the more painful trades of the Bowman Era. He was really good for the Canes for almost a decade before coming “home” to Chicago.

He’s been great on any line the Blackhawks need him on this year. But the way his teammates talk about how he passes the puck in this piece by Mark Lazerus at The Athletic is eye-opening. Hopefully he’s okay after taking a puck to the mouth inside the final minute of regulation last night.

Frank Nazar called Teuvo Teräväinen "one of the smartest players" he's ever played with.

I wanted to know exactly what he meant by that. The more I asked around, the more I heard things I'd never heard in all my years covering hockey.

Read it: https://t.co/wunZxD29Qj

  • This video mashup has been making its way around social media and it’s amazing. A side-by-side of a rookie Patrick Kane in the shootout and Connor Bedard‘s ridiculousness in Vegas on Tuesday night. If the move felt like it looked familiar…
It’s just like seeing Patrick Kane for the first time 🥹😪 #NHL pic.twitter.com/MYtsG35vAf

— Dobber (@DobberHockey) December 4, 2025
  • Greg Wyshynski at ESPN posted his NHL Award polling update on Thursday morning. He has Bedard as one of the finalists for the Hart Trophy, with Macklin Celebrini and Cale Makar. Understandably, he has Nathan MacKinnon winning the most valuable player award right now.
  • Wyshynski writes that Spencer Knight received votes for the Vezina Trophy but wasn’t among the top three. Right now, his polling has Scott Wedgewood of the Avs winning it ahead of Jeremy Swayman and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
  • Harman Dayal at The Athletic wrote about the breakout teams this season and how likely they are to make the playoffs. The Blackhawks came up. Here’s the water he poured on the Blackhawks’ playoff dreams (he gave them a 3/10 shot of making it, which is better than he gave San Jose):
The Blackhawks don’t dictate five-on-five play like most playoff-caliber teams. They’ve controlled less than 46 percent of scoring chances this season, which ranks 28th in the NHL. They’re at a notably better baseline than the Sharks in this regard, but it still isn’t the most sustainable recipe for success. We’re already seeing potential evidence of that, as the Blackhawks have lost six of their last seven games.

Chicago’s power play could also be in danger of regressing in the second half. Despite their gaudy results on the man advantage, the Blackhawks rank 30th at creating shots per 60 and 28th at creating high danger chances per 60 on the power play.

The Avalanche, Stars, and Wild are very likely to claim the three divisional playoff spots in the Central. That would mean the Blackhawks need to beat out more established/talented teams such as the Oilers, Jets, and Mammoth for a wild-card spot, which seems unlikely.
  • This is a big weekend for Hockey Canada. They’ll name their roster for the World Junior Championship on Monday (I expect Marek Vanacker to be there). Their management group for the Olympics is meeting beginning Sunday to make some big decisions on their roster for Milan. Good notes here from Pierre LeBrun.

  • It’s a relatively light Friday night slate for Blackhawks prospects in college and juniors tonight:
  • NCA
    No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth at No. 7 Western Michigan — 6 PM CST
Vermont at No. 18 Boston University — 6 PM
  • OHL
Peterborough at Kitchener — 6 PM
  • WHL
Penticton at Kamloops — 9 PM
  • The Rockford IceHogs host Colorado at 7 PM tonight. We’ll see how soon/often Laurent Brossoit gets into game action now that he’s on his rehab assignment. Here’s the IceHogs’ coach talking about him working his way back into the crease.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning signed veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh to a three-year extension that has a $4.1M cap hit. He’ll be 39 when the deal expires.

Blackhawks Prospect Notes: World Juniors Invites, Behm’s Stock Rising, Eaton Talks, More

December is going to be a busy month for the Blackhawks’ prospects. NCAA and CHL games are heating up, but there will be players who leave their respective teams for camps to get ready for the World Junior Championship as soon as next week. It’s also worth noting again that Minnesota-Duluth goaltender Adam Gajan will play in the Spengler Cup on the college select team; that tournament overlaps with the World Juniors.

Just this past weekend I updated our top 20 Blackhawks prospect rankings. But there’s a lot going on with the Blackhawks’ pipeline right now, so let’s look at a few notes, news items and updates.

World Junior Championship invites

We have now seen three Blackhawks prospects receive official invites to preliminary rosters for the 2026 World Junior Championship. AJ Spellacy is on the list for the United States and Václav Nestrašil is on the list for Czechia. Canada will name their preliminary roster on Monday, and I expect Marek Vanacker to be included (it would be disappointing if he somehow isn’t).

Sweden made it officially official and has Blackhawks prospect Anton Frondell on their preliminary roster for the World Juniors. He’s expected to play a significant role on that team — which is a legit gold medal contender.

Mark Eaton Talks Development

Ben Pope provided some really good updates and comments on a number of Blackhawks prospects from Mark Eaton this week. They talked about Spellacy, Jack Pridham, John Mustard, Sacha Boisvert and, of course, Roman Kantserov. I love these comments from Eaton about the KHL’s scoring leader transitioning his game to the NHL at some point in the not-too-distant future:

“He’s short in stature, but he’s stocky,” Eaton said. “He’s very solid and strong on his skates. He has that low center of gravity where he’s hard to knock off-balance. That will certainly serve him well over here. And he’s such a smart player, as well.

“The tough areas…get even tougher when you get over to the NHL. The netfront areas, the walls, the corners — those will be a step up for him. But he’s proven all along he learns to adjust and find a way. I wouldn’t expect anything different at the NHL.”

My other big takeaway from Eaton’s comments in this Pope article are that the Blackhawks are really high on Mustard’s ability to create and generate offense. He’s another great skater, and he’s had a really good start to his sophomore season.

Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov leads the KHL with 22 goals and continues to raise his stock ahead of his expected 2026 NHL arrival.

"He has the skill but also the bulldog mentality where he’s going to battle."

Behm’s Stock Rising

Mitch Brown at Elite Prospects published a stock watch for prospects in the WHL on Friday, and it was headlined by Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm. Brown writes that he’s emerging as an elite scorer in the WHL (he ranks second in the league with 41 points). Here’s part of his evaluation of Behm’s game this season:

Combining vision, creativity, and reach, there isn’t a pass Behm can’t make. He fakes defenders before dropping pucks back, shows shot before ripping a pass across the slot, and uses his full reach to adjust to passing lanes, ensuring pucks always get through. Really leaning into that rush and high-cycle playmaking has only amplified his scoring threat, too, as he’s on pace to eclipse last year’s 31 goals by 10.

What’s particularly exciting about Behm’s offensive surge is how it’s complemented by more power elements. He’s taking the puck hard to the net more often, leveraging his frame to win more battles, and has become a more engaged forechecker. While there’s still work to be done in those facets, his unique skill set and upward trajectory make him a big-time riser in the prospect sphere.

Colton Davies shared this terrific November highlight package of Behm on Twitter this week:

A big November for #Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm: 8G • 12A • 20PTS

Now at 41 points in 26 games and 2nd in WHL scoring.

Here are his November highlights@DraftProHockey | #WHL pic.twitter.com/NWvVHGI5gh

— Colton Davies (@coltonrdavies) December 4, 2025

League Leaders

  • WHL — entering Friday’s action, Behm ranks second in the league with 41 points and is tied for fifth in the league with 25 assists.
  • OHL — entering Friday’s action, Vanacker is tied for fourth in the league with 38 points. Vanacker leads the OHL with 24 goals — still five goals better than second place. He’s also tied for third with seven power play goals. Pridham ranks second in the OHL with three short-handed goals.
  • NCAA – entering this weekend’s action, Nestrašil’s 19 points are good for a tie (with Porter Martone) for second among all freshman skaters. His five power play goals rank second among freshman and are tied for eighth in the country.
  • NCAA — entering this weekend’s action, Gajan’s 12 wins rank second in the NCAA. His 1.78 goals against average is tied for third among goalies with at least 10 appearances. And his .925 save percentage ranks eighth among goalies with at least 10 appearances.

Blackhawks 2, Kings 1 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks came out fast and did a lot of really good things in the opening 20 minutes. They dominated the chances, but didn’t get anything past Darcy Kuemper. The attacking continued to start the second period. On their first full power play in the second period they were finally able to find the back of the net.

Late in the second period, the Blackhawks were a complete mess but found a way to get a loose puck in the offensive zone and score a huge second goal to take a 2-0 lead to the second intermission. The second goal came with 5.1 seconds left in the period.

It took more than ten minutes into the third period, but the third goal of the night came from the Kings. It looked like it got a piece of Sam Rinzel on its way into the net. It seemed fitting the Blackhawks would have to kill a fifth penalty with 86 seconds left in regulation — which they did successfully.

Star 1: Connor Bedard

The Blackhawks really needed to score the first goal of the game after dominating the first period but coming up empty. Leave it up to Bedard. He has a goal in four of the last five Blackhawks games. Tonight marked the 17th time in his young NHL career that Bedard scored the first goal of a game, which ranks sixth among active players since the start of his rookie year behind Sidney Crosby (21), Leon Draisaitl (21), Adrian Kempe (21), David Pastrnak (19) and Artemi Panarin (19).

pic.twitter.com/9aG6mml5Mj

— BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) December 5, 2025

Star 2: Frank Nazar

It might feel like Nazar will never score another goal right now, but he’s still making an impact on the game. He had assists on both of the goals in the second period. And, after 40 minutes, he had the Blackhawks’ highest expected goals for (0.82) and was tied for the team lead with two individual high danger chances at 5-on-5. He was also credited with two blocked shots and two hits before the end of the second period. Nazar has an assist in four straight games; he has two, four-game assist streaks in the last ten Blackhawks’ games. Tonight was Nazar’s first multi-point game since Oct. 28.

pic.twitter.com/WZlw2QfFL1

— BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) December 5, 2025

Star 3: Wyatt Kaiser

Beyond scoring his first goal of the season, Kaiser was really good tonight at even strength and on the penalty kill. He skated confidently with the puck and moved it out of trouble pretty well for the most part. The coaches rewarded him with the most ice time on the roster.

Key Takeaways

  • Spencer Knight was really good again tonight. He stopped 26 of 27 in the game.
  • Teuvo Teräväinen took a puck to the mouth with 56 seconds left in regulation and needed help to the room. Hopefully he’s okay… but he might have left a tooth or two on the ice. Helluvan effort.
  • At 5-on-5 in the first period, the Blackhawks had a 22-10 shot attempt advantage, a 9-6 advantage in scoring chances and a 4-2 advantage in high danger chances.
  • Colton Dach had a terrific first period. At 5-on-5 he was on the ice for 2:48 during which the Blackhawks had advantages of 8-0 in shot attempts and 3-0 in shots on net. He was credited with two shots on net and had two of the Blackhawks’ four hits in the opening 20 minutes. And he did that getting only four shifts in the period.
  • The Blackhawks sent three guys to the box in the first period. The good news: their penalty kill was terrific. They finished the night killing all five penalties.
  • The Kings predictably flipped the script in the second period, especially after the Blackhawks’ first goal. At 5-on-5, LA had the advantage in shot attempts (26-18) and scoring chances (11-9) in the second.

Blackhawks at Kings — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

For the second consecutive game, the Blackhawks will face the Kings in Los Angeles tonight. At least this game starts an hour earlier? And at least the Blackhawks were able to pull out an important, impressive win the previous meeting.

Teuvo Teräväinen is a game-time decision after taking a puck to the mouth late in the win two nights ago. He’s been terrific for the Blackhawks this season, no matter who’s on the ice with him. The Blackhawks did not have a morning skate, so we’ll have to wait for warm-ups to determine his status and who’s in net. Keep in mind the Blackhawks close this road trip with a back-to-back in LA tonight and Anaheim tomorrow night.

Chicago Blackhawks

  • Nick Foligno is on IR. Shea Weber (retired) is out long term.

Los Angeles Kings

What to Watch For

  • The Blackhawks did a lot of good things on Thursday night. There were also areas they need to clean up. And, now, there’s more familiarity between the two sides. Let’s see how the Kings adjust to what the Blackhawks did to them a couple nights ago.
  • Nazar played his best game in a couple weeks on Thursday night. It was his first multi-point game since late October. Let’s see if he can get the puck in the net tonight.
  • Dach filled up the box score (two shots on net, three blocked shots, four hits) in spite of skating a team-low 8:23 on Thursday night. Maybe he gets more ice time as this game could be more physical?

Kopitar Respect, Rinzel’s Ice Time, Quinn Hughes Rumors, Prospect Action, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I wanted to start our Sunday morning with something before we jump into Blackhawks-centric notes. If last night was the last time the Blackhawks face Anže Kopitar — which would require a playoff meeting — I want to take a moment and recognize how special it’s been to watch and write about his performances against the Hawks over the years. Especially when he was facing Jonathan Toews. They were two of the best centers in the entire NHL, and those series in the mid-2010s were some of the best hockey I’ve ever seen.

Nothing but respect to Kopitar on a magnificent career. And I’m glad the Blackhawks stayed on the ice to shake his hand even though they got their butts kicked.

  • Teuvo Teräväinen didn’t play last night after taking a shot to the face on Thursday. I’m assuming he’s doubtful for tonight’s game in Anaheim as well. In his absence, Sam Lafferty joined the lineup and contributed two giveaways in 8:47. Kudos to him, however, for not being on the ice for a goal against in his 13 shifts.
  • Sam Rinzel skated a total of 12:40 last night — the lowest ice time among the seven defensemen. Since the Blackhawks got home from their six-game road trip early in November, Rinzel has skated over 15 minutes in a game only twice in 11 games.
Seems like the Blackhawks coaching staff's patience with Sam Rinzel has been wearing thinner lately. He has played 5:33 of 5v5 time and 7:49 total through two periods.

  • Really good read here from Ben Pope on a subject I’ve written about a few times here. The PDO farm tells us the Blackhawks have been “lucky.” Analytics tell us what they’re doing is not sustainable. But… what if it is? At least in some fashion? (Note: we are all hoping what happened last night is not sustained and/or replicated any time soon. )
Can the Blackhawks be a "PDO team"? Can they keep defying the analytics models with efficient scoring and goaltending?

With Bedard, Knight and a system that reduces blocked shots in both ways, they might have a chance.

  • This tweet (and others citing these comments from Elliotte Friedman) got a little attention last night…
Elliotte Friedman – I do believe the Devils and Canucks did have a conversation about Quinn Hughes after the Canucks sent out that memo.

But I stress nothing nothing imminent.

— Rick Dhaliwal (@DhaliwalSports) December 7, 2025
  • As I noted in my tweet below: there is nothing to this but a hypothetical question. There are no rumors or reports that the Blackhawks have expressed interest in Quinn Hughes or that the Canucks have interest in anything the Blackhawks could offer. There have been other teams — New Jersey, Detroit, Philadelphia — tied to him recently. Again: nothing tying him to the Blackhawks. Even so, there are Blackhawks fans who are constantly bringing up Hughes as a dream scenario. So, I ran a poll question on Twitter yesterday. Again: this is exclusively a hypothetical.

Blackhawks 1, Ducks 7 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

When the Blackhawks hosted the Ducks one week ago, Anaheim jumped all over them and took and early lead. They pressed the Blackhawks early and often in the first period again tonight, but it took move than 10 minutes for the home team to take the lead tonight. The Ducks only scored once in the first period.

The Blackhawks were completely overwhelmed in the second period, and the dam eventually broke. That tends to happen when the shots on goal ratio is nearly 4:1 in favor of the other team. The Blackhawks were out-shot 27-7 in the second period. Four of those shots went in. The 27 shots on goal in a single period broke the Ducks’ franchise record for 20 minutes.

A Ducks power play carried over to open the third period and they scored 15 seconds into the period. It certainly felt like there was some get even happening from last Sunday’s game in Chicago.

Star 1: Arvid Söderblom

The Ducks’ power play goal in the second period (their second goal of the night) was their 30th shot on goal in the game — and it came less than 27 minutes into the contest. I know it’s easy and popular to just blast him when the goals against is ugly, but this game wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated even when it was 5-0 late in the second period. He faced 53 shots tonight.

Star 2: the bus driver

Here’s hoping they get the Blackhawks to the airport safely.

Star 3: the charter flight pilots

Here’s hoping they get the Blackhawks back to Chicago safely.

Key Takeaways

  • Tyler Bertuzzi scored a power play goal early in the third period. The assists went to Connor Bedard and Artyom Levshunov. Here’s the goal:
Goal: Andre Burakovsky scores a huge goal to cut the lead down to five pic.twitter.com/6nOuFshhqa

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 8, 2025
  • Levshunov and Sam Rinzel were credited with two shots on net each in the first period. The rest of the Blackhawks’ roster had two shots on net in the first — combined. And none of them came from a forward!
  • The Blackhawks were out-shot 18-6 in the first period. At 5-on-5, scoring chances were 13-2 and high danger chances were 8-0 in favor of the Ducks in the opening 20 minutes.
  • The Blackhawks were out-shot 27-7 in the second period. At 5-on-5, scoring chances were 15-3 and high danger chances were 9-0… those are just in the second period.
  • After spending the entire game on social media, I’ll say one thing in closing: this game wasn’t one person’s fault. Pointing a single finger after this performance (or the one last night in LA) is just lazy. Not much went right this weekend. Two days to reset and figure it out before hosting the Rangers…

A BAD Weekend, Vanacker Snubbed? Slaggert’s Role, Patience, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

One week ago, the Blackhawks came back from a three-goal deficit to blow the doors off the Anaheim Ducks in Chicago. The game was chippy. The two teams were chirping each other the entire 60 minutes. And the Blackhawks let them know what the final score was as they left the ice.

One week later, Joel Quenneville may have dusted off his Michael Jordan “and I took that personally” meme collection and got his team ready to play. The Blackhawks didn’t get off the bus, and the Ducks didn’t take their foot off the gas. The result: one of the most thorough butt kickings in the NHL this season. “Boat raced” feels like an understatement for how badly the Blackhawks got whipped yesterday.

The Blackhawks' 12.0 expected goals percentage at 5v5 tonight was the second lowest of any NHL team in a game this season, according to Natural Stat Trick. They also finished with the lowest 5v5 scoring chance percentage and tied for worst high-danger percentage.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) December 8, 2025
  • How bad was this weekend? Historically bad — for the Blackhawks and the NHL.
FINAL: Ducks 7, Blackhawks 1

First time since 1951 that the Hawks have lost by 6+ goals in consecutive games.

First time any NHL team has done so on consecutive nights since the Atlanta Thrashers in November 2000.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 8, 2025
  • Stray thought I had last night before the game even started: if there was ever a time to think about abandoning the 11-7 model, maybe last night would have been the time with Teuvo Teräväinen coming back into the lineup with a full cage and a swollen face. He skated 15:29 in the game and was minus-three. He spent 4:02 of that ice time killing penalties — time that could have been given to one of Sam Lafferty or Landon Slaggert.
  • Speaking of Slaggert, the Blackhawks brought him back up from Rockford on Nov. 12. He played in five games in the first two weeks he was back in the NHL. He hasn’t dressed for a game since No. 26. At this point, if you’re only going to dress 11 forwards, why carry 13? Get him some ice time in Rockford. The IceHogs could use another good player and he’s gathering dust in Chicago.

  • For as bad as this weekend was, I have a request of Blackhawks fans. And it’s something I’ve been saying since July. We all need to employ some patience. There are going to be clunkers and bad nights. This Blackhawks team exceeded expectations for long enough that teams aren’t going to overlook them on the schedule any more. And they’re good enough that they’re going to win a few games they probably shouldn’t this year. But, the flip side of that is there will be teams that put it on them and don’t take their foot off the gas because the Blackhawks have shown the ability to come back. Don’t throw the whole thing out because of two bad games.
  • With that in mind, if you’re going to jump into my replies with something to the effect of “what does Jason Dickinson do here?” I really cannot help you. As I said in the postgame piece and on social, pointing a finger at one individual after those two games is lying to yourself. Trying to make one person a scapegoat is lazy. I’m not specifically defending Dickinson here; that was an actual question I got on Twitter (an embarrassing one at that).
  • One week ago, we were talking playoff odds. This morning, people are offering to buy one-way plane tickets for guys. This Blackhawks team is somewhere in the middle, folks.
  • Hockey Canada will name its preliminary roster for the 2026 World Junior Championship today. Scott Wheeler from The Athletic tweeted a list of names he heard received invitations on Sunday. Blackhawks prospects Sacha Boisvert and Marek Vanacker were noted as not having received an invite. Vanacker being left home would be extremely disappointing; he leads the OHL with 24 goals. Of course Canada left Nick Lardis home, too, and look at how that worked out for them…
  • Václav Nestrašil is on the preliminary WJC roster for Czechia. He scored an empty-net goal for UMass in a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

Experts Discuss Blackhawks Prospect Marek Vanacker Getting Left Off Canada’s WJC Roster

On Monday, Hockey Canada officially named the roster for its World Junior Championship training camp. As I mentioned in our Monday bullets, Marek Vanacker is not on the list. Vanacker, like his then-Brantford teammate Nick Lardis one year ago, is left off despite leading the OHL in scoring.

The Blackhawks do not have a single prospect on Canada’s roster. Providence sophomore John Mustard and Boston University sophomore Sacha Boisvert were also reportedly on Canada’s radar.

Here’s Canada’s preliminary roster:

image-23.png

What the Analysts are Saying

Scott Wheeler and Corey Pronman at The Athletic listed Vanacker and Blues prospect Justin Carbonneau as the two most notable names not on Canada’s list. Here’s what they wrote about Vanacker:

Blackhawks first-rounder Marek Vanacker isn’t a late birthday, but this was also his last crack at it. He has scored five more goals than the next-closest player in the OHL this year and plays a power-speed game. Perhaps he could have been a valuable bottom-sixer for this team. We wonder if it came down to him and Red Wings prospect Carter Bear for a similar left-shot role. Bear got off to a slow start in his return from an Achilles injury this season with Everett, but has come on strong enough that Hockey Canada likely felt he was just a better fit for the role it was trying to fill there.

— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) December 8, 2025

Chris Peters at FloHockey shared his instant analysis of Canada’s roster announcement. He wrote this about Vanacker being left off the list:

Another player that I thought we’d see at least in camp was OHL leading goal scorer Marek Vanacker. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect has been a scoring machine for Brantford, which is one of the biggest wagons in junior hockey in years. A number of his teammates got spots, but not him. I don’t think Canada is going to struggle to score goals, but there isn’t a hotter hand in junior hockey right now than Vanacker.
Instant analysis of Canada's roster including thoughts on the makeup, the NHL Draft angle and some notable omissions. #WorldJuniors https://t.co/9MDxigfGbh

— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) December 8, 2025

Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff wrote his initial thoughts on Canada’s roster. He listed four significant omissions from the roster, and two of them were Blackhawks prospects. Here’s what he wrote about Canada opting to leave both Vanacker and Mustard off their camp roster:

John Mustard‘s (Chicago Blackhawks) hot first half in the NCAA helped get him on Hockey Canada’s radar, but he ultimately ran out of time. He had never represented Canada internationally in the past, and if you believe in all the political talk, the fact he has spent his entire junior career in the United States likely didn’t help his case. His recent cold streak – one point in his last six games – was poorly timed, too
The exclusion of Marek Vanacker (Chicago Blackhawks) means the top scorer in the OHL has not been invited two years in a row. Vanacker has been downright lethal with the Brantford Bulldogs. Some scouts have expressed concerns about his game away from the puck, though, and with a handful of skilled shooters, some wondered if he was redundant on this group. I would have taken him, personally.

Rockford Resets, World Juniors Reaction, Depth, Kane Chasing History, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks sent two players to Rockford on Monday. Sam Rinzel and Landon Slaggert were in different situations, but wound up in the same place.

Slaggert was enjoying the press box buffet for the past couple weeks, getting healthy scratched almost every night. His season got off to a delayed start because of injury and illness and he was still trying to find his groove. Going back to Rockford is the right move for Slaggert. Regular ice time in every situation will help him be ready for when he’s needed back in the NHL.

Rinzel, on the other hand, started the season as a guy getting mentioned for the Calder Trophy. He was expected to be the Blackhawks’ top-pair right-handed defenseman, run the top power play, skate 24+ minutes every night and look like a guy who’s been in the league for a decade… even if he’d only appeared in nine NHL games before this season.

He’s been moved off the top pair, off the top power play unit, got a healthy scratch and now gets to visit Rockford for a bit. Going to Rockford (for the first time) is the right move for Rinzel, too. He needs to get his confidence back and work on some things without the pressure of the NHL.

Oliver Moore started this season in Rockford. It served him well. Wyatt Kaiser has been up and down a few times. It’s been good for him, too. I’m not worried about either of these guys at all. I think they’ll both be good contributors for the Blackhawks’ NHL roster in the future. But, right now, they need to be the best version of themselves and they aren’t doing that on the NHL roster.

  • ICYMI: in the wake of Hockey Canada naming their preliminary roster for the World Junior Championship, I curated what some of the experts and analysts said about Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker being left off the list.

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) December 9, 2025
  • A quick two cents because the cynics in the crowd (largely on the artist formerly known as Twitter) are celebrating the Blackhawks having a top prospect left off the list because they’ll still take any chance they can get to crap on GMKD’s rebuild. The fact that the comments about Vanacker — who leads the OHL in scoring — largely had him as a potential bottom-six forward option for Canada isn’t any kind of a projection for what he might be in the NHL. It’s more of a statement of how good this crop of Canadian players is this year.
  • Furthermore, this is a moment to take a step back and acknowledge as well that there are only six spots open in the top six. I know, a revolutionary concept! There are going to be good players who somehow don’t make it into the top six for a deep team like Canada at this year’s WJC and, in a couple years, the Blackhawks because of the amount of talent, speed and skill coming thru the pipeline.
  • If, in three years, the Blackhawks’ third line is Vanacker, Ryan Greene and Nathan Behm, I think the Blackhawks are in really, really good shape. And there’s a chance a couple power forwards who can score like Vanacker and Behm find their way into those roles because of the other pieces in the pipeline. Which, again, is not a derogatory comment about their ability. It’s more of a statement about the depth in the pipeline.
  • Good stuff here from Ben Pope on Bedard getting better at faceoffs. I was told many times in the comments here that he was too small and needed to be moved to the wing because, at 18 and 19 years of age, he wasn’t winning enough faceoffs to think about maybe giving him more time to develop. To the shock of some, he’s still a center and he’s getting better at the dot, too.
Connor Bedard deserves credit for his improvement with faceoffs:

2023-24: 38.9%
2024-25: 38.3%
2025-26: 48.1%

"I’m trying to keep that consistency, and I feel like I’ve done a better job of that this year."

That's part 2 of this Bedard update: https://t.co/td7mZemMgt

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 8, 2025
  • Patrick Kane has scored 497 regular-season goals in his brilliant NHL career. He’s always put on a show in Chicago — both for the years he was the centerpiece of the Blackhawks’ offense and, of course, when he returned and spoiled Chris Chelios’ night with the dramatic game-winner. As a reminder: the Red Wings are in Chicago on Saturday of this week. They’re giving away Chelios bobbleheads that night. Stay tuned!
  • This is a magnificent read on Kane as a Red Wing. Highly recommend.
Patrick Kane is on the verge of scoring his 500th goal and passing Mike Modano on the all-time U.S.-born scoring list. Here's @m_bultman on how Kane has written a second chapter to his storied career in, of all places, Detroit:https://t.co/hlcSHKBzNx

Blackhawks Call Up Dominic Toninato

For everyone wanted the Blackhawks to call up a forward for additional depth before playing three games in four days, your wish is granted.

No, it’s not Nick Lardis.

On Tuesday morning, the Blackhawks recalled forward Dominic Toninato from the IceHogs.

Toninato, 31, has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 24 games this season with Rockford. He appeared in 20 NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets the previous three seasons combined. The Blackhawks signed Toninato to a two-year, two-way contract on July 1.

Blackhawks vs Rangers — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Okay, so we’ve all had a couple days to put the ugly weekend in the rearview mirror and move forward. The Blackhawks made the decision on their off day to sent a couple young guys to Rockford to get some work and called up just one forward, which means they’ll be skating a “normal” 12-6 lineup.

The great news for all of us is tonight’s nationally broadcast game is actually an early game! Love me a 6:30 start on a weeknight. Let’s see if the Blackhawks show up on time and get back to what works.

Oh, and keep an eye on warm-ups tonight… we might see dark jerseys on both teams in their centennial seasons for the national television audience.

New York Rangers

  • Adam Fox and Matt Rempe are on IR.

What to Watch For

  • The Blackhawks have had a couple days to digest, flush and move on from two of their worst performances of the season. Let’s see if they bounce back in a big way on home ice against a vulnerable Rangers team tonight.
  • The Blackhawks will go back to skating 12 forwards tonight. Head coach Jeff Blashill said after the morning skate that hopefully they can find a little more consistency from the forwards being able to roll with “normal” linemates.
  • The Rangers come into this game having lost their last two games. But they’re a strange team this year. The Rangers are 12-4-1 away from Madison Square Garden and only 3-8-3 at home.

Blackhawks 3, Rangers 0 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

After as bad as they looked in the back-to-back blowout losses over the weekend, this was about as good of a response as you could hope for from the Blackhawks. This was a complete, surgical win.

Igor Shesterkin is one of the best goaltenders on the planet, and he kept the Blackhawks off the board about four minutes into the first period with a ridiculous save. He did it again less than three minutes later, this time robbing Connor Bedard. There were a couple other good saves against the ten shots Shesterkin faced in the opening 20 minutes — a period that ended scoreless.

Shesterkin remained very good in the second period. But the Blackhawks beat him three times on excellent effort plays. Unfortunately, only two of the three pucks that went into the net counted. But the Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead to the second intermission. Chicago added the ever-important next goal in the third period.

Star 1: Louis Crevier

Shesterkin was stoning the Blackhawks all night until Crevier did THIS short-handed. What???

GOAL: Louis Crevier HOW DO YOU DO! Wow! pic.twitter.com/WVTrpoV45A

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 11, 2025

Star 2: Spencer Knight

Knight was fabulous the entire night, but his two saves against point blank shots from Noah Laba during a third period Rangers power play with the Hawks up 3-0 were huge.

Spencer Knight with back-to-back stops on Noah Laba pic.twitter.com/ENiClWbocU

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 11, 2025

Star 3: Connor Bedard

After 40 minutes, Bedard was tied for the team lead with three shots on net. This finish probably felt easy after the gorgeous set-up from André Burakovsky. Bedard picked up an assist on the third goal of the night for another multi-point night.

GOAL: Burakovsky to Bedard! Blackhawks make it 2-0 again pic.twitter.com/liuplRPC9B

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 11, 2025

Key Takeaways

  • Tyler Bertuzzi led the Blackhawks with two blocked shots in the first period. He found some loose change in front of Shesterkin right as he came on the ice early in the third period to extend the Blackhawks’ lead to three.
GOAL: Tyler Bertuzzi jams in a loose puck in front to extend the lead pic.twitter.com/VmA8W519NC

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 11, 2025
  • Ryan Donato appeared to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 10:40 into the second period, but Colton Dach moved the puck with his hand. The Rangers asked for a review, and won it.
  • Moments before Bedard’s goal, Frank Nazar made a brilliant play backchecking on Artemi Panarin to break up a potential scoring chance. Nazar was tied with Bedard for the team lead with three shots on net thru two periods.
  • Down to only three right-handed defensemen with Sam Rinzel in Rockford, Connor Murphy saw a might bigger workload tonight and he was really good — especially on the penalty kill.

Let’s Talk About Frank Nazar, Scoring Struggles, Process and Still Having a “Really Good Night”

The Blackhawks’ win over the Rangers on Wednesday night checked almost every box that you would want from the team. Connor Bedard scored a highlight-reel goal. Tyler Bertuzzi deposited loose change again. Spencer Knight was spectacular in net and got a shutout. The Blackhawks were able to beat Igor Shesterkin three times. It was the right bounce-back effort that you hoped to see.

When I say almost every box, that’s because Frank Nazar still can’t buy a goal.

He had a few chances. One opportunity specifically will get a lot of clicks because it seemed like he had another golden opportunity to break his goal-less drought but whiffed on the attempt — twice.

Frank Nazar with the steal for a clear-cut breakaway but he fumbles away the puck. He’s soooo due for a goal pic.twitter.com/cqkXhxbrbu

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) December 11, 2025

But there’s more to this specific moment and the rest of Nazar’s night that is worth discussing. How did he got the puck in that position to score? Nazar took the puck away and skated away from the Rangers around him to be completely clear of the defense. His defense continues to be good. And his effort in that part of his game continues to be noteworthy.

There were a few moments last night where Nazar’s defense made a difference. The biggest was breaking up a would-be scoring chance for Artemi Panarin while the Blackhawks were up two. If the Breadman finishes there, the complexion of the game changes. But Nazar sprinted back and got just enough to break up the play.

Other areas of Nazar’s game aren’t taking a step back as he searches for a goal. That shows the young forward is implementing what the coaches are preaching into his game.

Trust the Process

Nazar is learning in his first full season in the NHL something that the coaches have talked about frequently this year: sometimes, a break-even shift is a win.

That’s a hard reality for a lot of young players to understand and appreciate because, if you get to the NHL, you were probably a great scorer at some point along the way — and you want to show that in the League.

That learning process isn’t lost on Nazar.

“I mean, the greatest players in the world are out there going out each shift and even if it’s like, okay, you’re stuck in the D zone, you’re stuck in the neutral zone chasing and then you got to get off, sometimes those shifts are all right,” Nazar said. “You have to break teams down, you’ve got to make them not want to work and tire them out. Until you get that opportunity to execute — then you execute. It’s something that I think everybody’s struggled with. It’s something you learn from.”

I talked to Nazar before the game on Wednesday about playing the complete game while the goals have been hard to come by. His locker is right next to Jason Dickinson’s in the room at the United Center, and Dickinson made eye contact with Nazar a couple times while we talked about how veterans on the bench are helping him with the process. Nazar said Dickinson has been a big help for him and the other young guys.

“There are times when you’re going to score and other when you’re not going to score. You go through tough times,” Nazar said Wednesday morning. “Guys like Jason, Bert [Tyler Bertuzzi] are always giving good advice about keeping your head up. It’s definitely something we talk about. Maybe this didn’t happen, but that was still a good shift. It’s something that me, Mooresy [Oliver Moore] and Bert have brought up playing together.”

For a 21-year-old who’s trying to not only learn how to handle an 82-game NHL schedule for the first time but also live up to a big extension this season, Nazar seemingly being able to keep his focus on process is impressive. Lots of young guys get lost in their struggles and get frustrated with a goal drought like Nazar is experiencing right now.

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill was asked about Nazar’s scoring struggles after the game. His response helps explain how and why the young players on the roster talk about process as much as they do. Blashill isn’t focused exclusively on Nazar struggling to put the puck in the net.

“Honestly, I thought Frank Nazar was as good as he’s played probably all season,” Blashill said after the game. “I thought he was excellent tonight. I look at process, I look at things like being over the puck and being strong on the puck and having those opportunities to make plays and using his speed. Yes, there have been nights where maybe St. Louis, in St. Louis he was flashier. But I thought for the things it’s going to take for Frank to be a really, really big-time difference maker, he was excellent tonight. Is it frustrating when you’re not scoring? Yes. Our job as a coaching staff is to keep him focused on the process because points come and go. I’ve seen it all the time. He’ll get his points if he plays like that on a consistent basis.”

After the Blackhawks got blown out in Anaheim, I wrote about Nazar having a better night than the highlights might lead you to believe. Focusing exclusively on offense leaves a lot of hockey being played out of the conversation.

If we as media and fans focus only on the singular moment in which a player like Nazar fails to score, we’re all missing a big part of the game. Right now, Nazar is working on every aspect of his game to be an impactful player in the NHL. Scoring isn’t happening, and that’s frustrating for everyone. But him doing the other things to help the Blackhawks win will continue to give him chances to end that drought.

Crevier?!? Good Knight, Rockford Highlights, Frondell, West Debut, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The first thing I want to say about last night’s fabulous, wonderful, much-needed bounce-back Blackhawks win was my goodness the blue and red on the ice together was magnificent! The NHL really should consider more dark vs. dark matchups, especially when the colors pop as much as last night’s did on the ice and television. The Rangers’ centennial jerseys are beautiful. Next to the Blackhawks’ red centennial sweaters? *Chef’s kiss*

  • And now another look at Louis Crevier‘s game-winning, short-handed goal:

  • Spencer Knight may have “only” made 21 saves last night, but he was really good again. After the game, Crevier became the latest of Knight’s teammates to note how him being calm in net helps settle down the skaters in front of him at times. I asked him after the game if there’s any extra excitement when he goes up against another all-world goalie like Igor Shesterkin last night, and I got an answer I should have expected. No, he doesn’t get more up for those games; he just wants to continue playing his game. But he does appreciate the excellence on the other end of the rink. Here’s Knight on TNT after his second shutout of the season:

  • Landon Slaggert and Sam Rinzel joined the IceHogs’ lineup last night and helped Rockford pick up a nice 4-3 win in Iowa. Slaggert scored the first goal of the night for Rockford.

  • Here’s Nick Lardis scoring the IceHogs’ second goal of the night. This is his 12th goal of the season.

  • Here’s Kevin Korchinski scoring Rockford’s third goal of the night:
  • Nolan Allan scored into an empty net, and that held up as the game-winner for the IceHogs. Rinzel had two assists in his first career AHL game, which was great to see. And Brett Seney’s two assists moved him second place all-time on the IceHogs’ scoring list with 181 points. He trails only Brandon Pirri, who had 214 points for the IceHogs.
  • Here’s Bedard on TNT before the game last night talking about learning from a rough weekend in southern California. The Blackhawks will look to avoid a rough back-to-back weekend tomorrow and Saturday with a game in St. Louis and then hosting the Red Wings.

  • Roman Kantserov continues to do really impressive things in the KHL. And he’s so far ahead of the rest of the players who haven’t celebrated their 23rd birthday yet in the league (reminder: Kantserov is only 21!).

  • Really good read here from Ben Pope on Anton Frondell‘s season in the SHL. He’ll play a big role for Sweden at the World Juniors in a couple weeks.
Anton Frondell's ice time with Djurgarden has fluctuated.

But the Blackhawks are telling him to prioritize himself.

"He can still dominate that game. He’s that strong. He’s that good. He doesn’t need to defer to the older players."

  • Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff began his previews of the teams heading to the World Junior Championship at the end of this month with Czechia. When he starts discussing their forward group, the first name mentioned is Blackhawks prospect and UMass freshman Václav Nestrašil. Here’s what he wrote about Nestrašil:
While the Czechs don’t have a superstar forward by any means, their offense is well-balanced, powered by multiple players having career years. Václav Nestrašil (Chicago Blackhawks) is an absolute force, using his 6-foot-6 frame to routinely win battles in college. Seriously, he’s tracking for well north of 40 points as a freshman, and his play makeup is something we rarely see in a scoring role. Nestrašil didn’t represent Czechia at any event last year, but I liked him in the summer and fully expect him to be a play-driver at this event.
It's #WorldJuniors preview time at @DailyFaceoff.

  • Jordan McAlpine at FloHockey reports Blackhawks’ 2026 first round pick and Minnesota high school football state champion quarterback Mason West “is expected to make his highly-anticipated season debut on Thursday with the USHL’s Fargo Force, as Fargo hosts Sioux City.” (checks notes) That’s tonight!!
Less than three weeks after winning a Minnesota football state championship with Edina High School, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Mason West is set to begin his season in the USHL with the Fargo Force.

  • Ordinarily I don’t make a big deal about rankings for the draft when they’re updated in our bullets because, frankly, rankings can be so fluid. But Corey Pronman at The Athletic updated his 2026 rankings on Wednesday and they changes are absolutely noteworthy. Gavin McKenna dropped to No. 4 on Pronman’s board behind Tynan Lawrence, Keaton Verhoeff and Ivar Stenberg.

  • The Los Angeles Kings announced they have signed forward Vojtech Cihar to a three-year entry-level contract. Cihar was a second-round pick by LA in the 2025 NHL Draft.
  • Yesterday was another busy day in St. Louis. The Blues will be without Jordan Kyrou, who’s week-to-week. They signed forward Robby Fabbri to a one-year, two-way contract ($775,000 in NHL, $300,000 AHL). And the Blues also made some headlines by signing Dillon Dube, who was one of the players involved in the sexual assault trial earlier this year, to an AHL PTO. The Blackhawks are in St. Louis on Friday night.

Blackhawks at Blues — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

When the Blackhawks were in St. Louis on Oct. 15, it did not go well for the Blues. The Blackhawks scored eight goals and exacted a little payback for last years’ Winter Classic debacle.

Fast forward almost two months and the Blackhawks are fighting for a playoff spot. The Blues have the third-worst point percentage in the NHL and are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. St. Louis also has some important guys hurt right now. Beware the trap game against a division rival, though. Especially with Patrick Kane in Chicago tomorrow.

Yeah, this is another game streaming exclusively on ESPN+ and/or Hulu. I don’t make these decisions, so please don’t blame me.

Injury Report

Chicago Blackhawks

  • Nick Foligno is on IR. Shea Weber (retired) is out long term.

St. Louis Blues

  • Torey Krug Jordan Kyrou, Alexey Toropchenko and Jimmy Snuggerud are on IR.

What to Watch For

  • The Blackhawks are coming off a really good win. The Blues got their butts kicked last night. Let’s hope both repeat tonight.
  • Bedard is one goal away from tying Eddie Olczyk for the most goals by a Blackhawks player 20 years old or younger. He’s also still making a great impression on Hockey Canada, who will likely be watching Binnington tonight as well.
  • Nazar scored a goal in St. Louis in October. Let’s get that box checked tonight!
  • The Blackhawks haven’t been good in back-to-backs this year. The first half is important. They’ve talked about that and know that going into tonight’s game.
