News Blackhawks Team Notes

A Better Road Loss, Kantserov Talks Future, Nazar’s USA Chances, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks lost in overtime last night, but it was a much better, closer game than the previous tilt in Winnipeg. The Blackhawks held the Oilers to two goals in regulation — both coming on the power play. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Blackhawks had a 52-49 shot attempt advantage at 5-on-5 in regulation. The Hawks had a 9-5 advantage in high danger chances in regulation as well.

Connor Bedard, André Burakovsky and Ryan Greene were outstanding last night. They combined for 10 shots on net (of the Blackhawks’ 29 total), Bedard won 7 of 14 faceoffs in the game and they combined to score the only 5-on-5 goal of the night. The Blackhawks really might have something in Burakovsky and Bedard together.

  • Bedard (7 of 14) and Frank Nazar (8 of 16) combined to win 15 of their 30 faceoffs last night. The Blackhawks won 20 of 45 as a team (44 percent). That’s an impressive night at the dot from the Blackhawks’ top two centers.
  • Nazar finished tied for the team lead with five shots on net and also led Blackhawks forwards with three blocked shots.
  • Michael Russo at The Athletic went in on the Olympic bubble watch for the United States. I’m not going to tell you what he had to say about Nazar’s tremendous start to the season because it’s all positive. But when I think about Nazar’s potential opportunity and how he might fit into the USA roster, what matters most is what the team is looking for when building their roster. Here’s what USA GM Bill Guerin had to say about how he’s building a gold medal roster:
“We need goal scoring. We need power-play guys. We also need penalty killers. We need guys that can check. If we learned anything from the 4 Nations, it was like, I don’t want to say mistake-free hockey, but the checking, there was no room. That’s why you saw the shots weren’t very high. The scoring wasn’t very high. It’s because everybody could check. Everybody was responsible like that.

“So it’s not just goal scoring and offense. We will have plenty of that. You’ve got to be able to do the other stuff, too.”

  • Artyom Levshunov led the Blackhawks with four blocked shots last night.
  • Spencer Knight bounced back nicely from a rough night in Winnipeg. He stopped 27 of 30 in the game, but faced some tough shots from a few of the better players in the world.
  • I can’t believe Mitch Marner somehow blew Game 7 for the Blue Jays last night. Because that’s how this works, right?
  • Sergey Demidov at RG Media spoke with Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov about his season, his relationship with the Blackhawks and when he might come to North America. Kantserov, 21, leads the KHL with 13 goals and has 21 goals in 21 games to start a terrific season. This might be his final season in the KHL — his contract expires at the end of the league year and he told Demidov that he plans on making an NHL decision once his season with Magnitogorsk ends. Here’s what Kantserov told him about his relationship with the Blackhawks while playing professionally in Russia:
“Of course I follow [Connor] Bedard. They’re a young team in a rebuild, but they’re doing quite well. As for our communication, it’s normal, professional. They know I’m in the last year of my contract, and I can feel they’re showing more interest now. We have calls roughly every 10 games, go over clips, and discuss areas to improve. Still, the systems in our leagues are very different, so we mostly talk about individual skills.”
Chicago’s next breakout star might be skating 5,000 miles away. Roman Kantserov is tearing up the KHL – 13 goals in 21 games – and says his NHL move could come in 2026.

  • The Seattle Kraken activated Kaapo Kakko off the IL and he made his regular season debut last night. They host the Blackhawks on Monday night.

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

  • In the OHL, AJ Spellacy scored his second goal of the season but Windsor lost 6-3 at Saginaw. He also won 10 of a team-high 17 faceoffs in the game.
  • Jack Pridham opened the scoring for the Kitchener Rangers 41 seconds into the second period. That held up as the game-winning goal in a 4-0 win over Brampton. Pridham added an assist for a two-point afternoon.

Bedard, McDavid, Foligno/Sirianni, Who’s Healthy? Prospect Updates, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Yesterday I wrote a couple pieces about Connor Bedard. One was about his contract situation. The other was about Bedard having the best calendar month of his NHL career (so far). The two play hand-in-hand. Bedard waiting to sign a deal was betting he was going to have a big year. So far, he is.

The Blackhawks face the Oilers tonight in Edmonton. Bedard has as many points as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl entering November.

  • This came from the NHL in their October recap from across the league in a section discussing the impact of young players:
The Blackhawks rank among the top three in the NHL for goals (t-1st; 13), assists (1st; 20) and points (1st; 33) by players age 21 or younger, with Connor Bedard (6-8—14), 20, and Frank Nazar (5-6—11), 21, spotting Chicago a five-point improvement over their 11-game start last season.
  • With the Blackhawks in Edmonton tonight, a little intel on the opposition. Evan Bouchard got the bag this offseason, but things haven’t been great on the ice to start the new season.
Evan Bouchard's turnovers are the elephant in the Oilers' room but so far his ice time hasn't dipped. It's time for that to change, writes @sportsnetspec. https://t.co/lEjRquJ8PM

  • Some interesting comments from Jonathan Toews after facing his former team on Thursday night.
"A lot of years in Chicago felt like Groundhog’s Day… You start to think that things are never going to change, or at least you just assume that’s the way things are with every organization. But then things change really fast."

  • In the college ranks, Václav Nestrašil scored the game-winning power play goal with 99 seconds left in regulation as No. 13 UMass beat No. 20 Cornell 2-1.
Václav Nestrašil stayed hot, tipping one in with 99 seconds remaining to decide the game.

That makes it 7 goals in 8 games and he’s now well on pace to break the record for most goals scored by a Czech player in a single season, which is 15 goals from the 1950/51 campaign.

  • Adam Gajan stopped 25 of 28 as North Dakota stormed back to tie the game late and force overtime. No. 10 Minnesota-Duluth got the 4-3 win in OT.

Blackhawks Call Up Oliver Moore

On Monday morning (at least in Seattle, afternoon in Chicago), the Blackhawks recalled forward Oliver Moore from the Rockford IceHogs.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) November 3, 2025

Jason Dickinson was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 30.

Moore, 20, led all AHL rookies with six goals and has nine points in nine games with the IceHogs. The Blackhawks originally selected Moore with the 19th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He appeared in nine games with the Blackhawks last year, collecting four assists.

He was at the “morning” skate (which began at 1:30 PM CT) in Seattle on Monday.

Blackhawks 1, Kraken 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

This game felt a lot like the Blackhawks’ loss to the Kings at the United Center, except the Blackhawks dominated the puck more in this game. The Kraken just didn’t let them get a lot of good, clean shots off — and the Blackhawks couldn’t finish.

The Blackhawks had a 22-11 Corsi For advantage at 5-on-5 in the second period and a 35-23 overall advantage at 5-on-5 after 40 minutes of hockey (49-24 in all situations). The Blackhawks out-shot the Kraken 14-5 in the second period. Chicago had the puck in the offensive zone 55 percent of the game thru two periods. They had nothing but a two-goal deficit to show for it.

The effort plays continued into the third and the Blackhawks were able to break thru in the middle of the period. Unfortunately, a neutral zone turnover turned into a third goal for Seattle with 3:55 left in regulation.

Star 1: André Burakovsky

Burakovsky got the Blackhawks on the board in the middle of the third period. He’s now scored in three straight games and has five goals on the season.

GOAL: Andre Burakovsky finally gets the Blackhawks on the board. Great effort from Bedard to set it up pic.twitter.com/Jld5olLNk5

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 4, 2025

Star 2: Connor Bedard

I couldn’t make Burakovsky a star and not give Bedard credit for making a great play to set him up with a great scoring chance. Bedard extended his personal point streak to five games, during which he has nine points. The Blackhawks needed a play and Bedard made one to set up Burakovsky for the first Chicago goal. He won 10 of 14 faceoffs in the game as well.

Star 3: Wyatt Kaiser

Thru two periods, Kaiser was on the ice at 5-on-5 for 14 Blackhawks shots on net to just 5 for the Kraken. Kaiser’s expected Goals For (1.72) was the highest on the Blackhawks — almost 0.8 more than the second-best on the team (Oliver Moore — 0.95). In 11:34 total thru two periods, Kaiser was credited with one shot on net, one blocked shot and one hit.

Kaiser with a powerful stride to get the puck to Foligno on time. I love watching him skate, his movement is second to none pic.twitter.com/qzyH7vwx4q

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 4, 2025

Key Takeaways

  • The Blackhawks might want to throw out everything they’ve done on the power play and start over from scratch.
  • Moore’s speed was noticeable out of the gate, but he was looking to score more frequently than we saw when he joined the Blackhawks at the end of last season. He was buzzing in the first period and finished the frame tied for the team lead with two shots on goal (team-high four shot attempts).
  • Colton Dach had a strong first period as well. He led the Blackhawks with two shots on goal and three hits in the first. He barely got on the ice in the second or third periods, though.
  • Interestingly, 8 of the Blackhawks’ 11 forwards took at least one faceoff in the first period. As a team, the Hawks won 7 of 15 draws in the first period.
  • The Blackhawks won 16 of 22 faceoffs in the second period. Thru 40 minutes, Frank Nazar had won 7 of 9 and Bedard had won 6 of 9 at the dot. Nazar won 10 of 15 faceoffs in the game. Chicago won 60 percent of the faceoffs in the game.
  • Artyom Levshunov‘s Shots For ratio was 10-4 favoring the Hawks thru two periods. His expected Goal For was (0.93) ranked fourth on the team. He was playing quite well.
  • Arvid Söderblom had a mostly solid night. He didn’t have much of a chance on either of the first two goals; the first one had three layers of screens and the second was a missile. He would probably like the third one back, however, and appeared to be frustrated when Jordan Eberle beat him. He stopped 21 of 24 in the game.

Blackhawks 2023 Draft Class Showing Signs of Potential Future Impact

With the Blackhawks focusing their rebuild efforts on the draft, the hope each summer has been that the team would hit on a few picks and have those players turn into NHL regulars. But development takes time, and — as we’ve talked about a lot here — that timeline isn’t defined for each player and it certainly isn’t linear.

When players start to get to their age 20-22 seasons, you start looking for signs that players are going to be more prospect than suspect.

There’s been a lot of talk in recent days about some specific Blackhawks players and prospects who are playing in Chicago, Rockford, the college ranks in the United States and in the KHL in Russia. And they all share one thing in common: they were drafted by the Blackhawks in 2023.

Look at what five of the Blackhawks’ top six picks from the 2023 NHL Draft are performing to start the 2025-26 season:

1.1 — Connor Bedard, C — NHL star
1.19 — Oliver Moore, F — AHL rookie goals leader before promotion
2.35 — Adam Gajan, G — leads the NCAA with 8 wins
2.44 — Roman Kantserov, F — leads the KHL with 14 goals (22 points) in 22 games
2.55 — Martin Misiak, F — in Rockford
3.67 — Nick Lardis, W — named AHL Rookie of the Month for October

Obviously there are considerations with each of these guys other than Bedard, who is off to the best start of his NHL career.

Moore’s scoring was a question mark at Minnesota, but he’s been able to find the back of the net as a professional. We’ll see if the success he enjoyed in the AHL translates to the highest level.

Gajan’s freshman season was impacted by injuries, but his sophomore season has seen him be the guy the Blackhawks took early in the second round. But, with Spencer Knight appearing to be the long-term No. 1 in Chicago, there’s no rush for him to get to the NHL level.

Kantserov was a huge talent — in a small package. He’s putting up terrific numbers in his age-21 season in the KHL. He recently said he’ll make a decision on the NHL after the 2025-26 KHL season ends. He could need some time to adjust to the pro game in North America.

Lardis had a historic season in the OHL last year, but some questioned if his offense would make an easy transition to the pro level(s). So far, so good in Rockford. But the NHL is another level.

The great news is the Blackhawks went all-in on building through the draft, and the current look of this draft class is superb.

Getting 2-3 regular NHL contributors out of an NHL draft class as a whole is a sign that an organization’s scouts are doing a good job. If the Blackhawks can get four or five impact players from a single draft class? That could have an enormous impact on the trajectory of the franchise in the coming years.

Blackhawks Prospect Nick Lardis Named AHL Rookie of the Month

On Tuesday, Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times published an interview with Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson in which Lardis’ outstanding start to the season came up. Here’s what GMKD told Pope about Lardis’ performance thus far with the IceHogs:

“[Lardis has] carried through some of that production that he had in junior into pro,” Davidson said. “He’s in a good spot right now, just playing a ton of minutes and getting a ton of opportunity. You can’t really say there’s too much he needs to fix right now. He just needs to keep playing.”

From the AHL’s announcement:

Lardis registered his first pro point with an assist in a 6-2 win at Iowa on Oct. 12. He had his first multi-point game in Chicago on Oct. 18, scoring his first pro goal and assisting on the game-winning tally in a 3-2 overtime victory. The next night, Lardis notched a goal and three assists at Chicago, securing AHL Player of the Week honors following a seven-point weekend. He scored twice in the IceHogs’ 6-1 win over the Wolves on Oct. 28 to close out the month as the league’s top-scoring rookie.

A third-round selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft, Lardis is currently one point off the overall AHL scoring lead with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 10 games this season.

Blackhawks 5, Canucks 2 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

Remember when the Blackhawks lost to the Canucks at the United Center on Oct. 17 and the refs questionably took a would-be go-ahead goal away from Tyler Bertuzzi even after a lengthy review?

Puck don’t lie. Bertuzzi put together the fourth hat trick of his NHL career to lead a Blackhawks’ third period offensive explosion that ends the Canucks’ dominance of the Blackhawks in recent years.

The game started fast, with a back-and-forth first period ending without a score on either side. The second period picked up where the first one ended. With 11:26 left in the middle period the Canucks were able to put the puck in the net, but Drew O’Connor clearly pushed Spencer Knight down on the play. The Blackhawks challenged — and won this time! The game stayed tied to the second intermission.

After withstanding a Canucks onslaught in the second period, the Blackhawks rewarded their goaltender with four goals in 8:31 to blow the game open. Though Vancouver eventually got on the board, the Blackhawks added an insurance goal into the empty net to pick up the first win on the road trip.

Star 1: Spencer Knight

Knight was excellent in the first period, stopping all 16 shots he faced. He was much busier in the second period as the Canucks started to dominate the puck, but was still outstanding (when he wasn’t interfered with). He had to make 18 saves in the second period to keep the score tied. The Canucks had 17 high danger chances by the end of the second period and nothing to show for it. Knight’s shutout bid ended with 3:11 left in regulation on Vancouver’s 43rd shot of the game. He picked up an assist on the final goal of the night, too. Here’s his helper on the Blackhawks’ fifth goal of the night:

GOAL: Connor Bedard seals it with an empty-netter off a sick pass from SPENCER KNIGHT pic.twitter.com/SpeKx6nDTl

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 6, 2025

Star 2: Tyler Bertuzzi

The Blackhawks needed a goal after starting the third period much better than they played in the second and they got it off the… foot of Bertuzzi. He was having a good night before scoring the first goal of the game; Bertuzzi was on the ice at 5-on-5 for 11 of the Blackhawks’ 19 shots on goal thru two periods, the highest on the roster. Bertuzzi added a power play goal for a second in the period.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 6, 2025

Star 3: Connor Bedard

Bedard came out of the gates flying. He was credited with four of the Blackhawks’ nine scoring chances in the first period and attempted five shots. He was up to eight shot attempts and had a team-leading individual Expected Goals of 0.46 by the end of the second period. He beautifully set up Bertuzzi for his second goal of the night on the power play. Bedard scored into the empty net late off a nice outlet pass from Knight to close the books on a big win. He finished the night with 13 shot attempts and eight scoring chances — his best performance in his home town.

Key Takeaways

  • Moore was limited to just 6:57 thru two periods, the lowest ice time on the roster. He only got four shifts in the second period. The Blackhawks killing two penalties in the second might have impacted his ice time. He came out flying early in the third period and picked up his first NHL point of the season.
  • Matt Grzelcyk was terrific in the first period. In his 5:43 on the ice, the Blackhawks had a 10-1 Corsi For advantage and Grzelcyk had a team-best 93.32 expected Goals For percentage. He put a team-leading two shots on net in the period (Alex Vlasic was also credited with two shots in the first). Grzelcyk picked up the primary assist on Bertuzzi’s first goal.
  • When the Blackhawks finally got a power play almost six minutes into the third period, Artyom Levshunov was at the point instead of Sam Rinzel. Levshunov had the second assist on the Bertuzzi power play goal.
  • Donato had two assists in the game.
  • Vlasic had a team-leading five shots on net.
  • This was a potentially big moment in the first period. Elias Pettersson got behind everyone and decided to drop the puck to Evander Kane. André Burakovsky flew back and knocked the puck away beautifully. Rinzel played Pettersson well initially as well.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 6, 2025
  • The Canucks line of Evander Kane, Elias Pettersson and Conor Garland feasted on the Blackhawks thru two periods. At 5-on-5 that line was on the ice for 16 Canucks shot attempts in 8:06 to nine for the Hawks.
  • Vancouver got on the board when Levshunov pinched at a bad time with a four-goal lead. Thankfully, this learning moment came with a lead. Their second goal came after an attempt at their empty net was blocked on the other end of the rink.

Spencer Knight Should Be in the USA Olympic Roster Conversation

We’ve already talked a good amount here about the marvelous start to the season the Blackhawks have enjoyed from goaltender Spencer Knight.

Knight, 24, has started 10 of the Blackhawks’ first 14 games. Among goalies who have appeared in at least 5 games this season, Knight ranks fourth in save percentage (.919) and 11th in goals against average (2.56). Of course, GAA is a function of the number of shots he’s facing. And we don’t need to look much further than Wednesday night’s win to see a performance where he authored a “goalie win” for the Blackhawks.

So, should Knight be in the conversation for a spot on the United States’ roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics? Let’s get into it.

Spencer Knight Chicago Blackhawks Cole Caufield Montreal Canadiens

David Banks-Imagn Images

Spencer Knight: Olympian?

I referenced where Knight ranks among NHL goaltenders (min. 5 games played) thru Wednesday night’s games already. I cropped the save percentage rankings because I think Nos. 3 and 4 overall start to build the foundation for a compelling argument:

image-4.png

Hockey Reference calculates Goalie Point Shares (GPS), which they define as “an estimate of the number of points contributed by a player due to his play in goal.” Thru Wednesday night’s performance in Vancouver, Knight leads the entire NHL with 2.8 GPS.

MoneyPuck shares a number of their own metrics, including Goals Saved Above Expected. As you can see below, Knight ranks second in the league behind Lukas Dostal in that metric.

image-3.png

Source: MoneyPuck

I already know based on the title of this piece that there are going to be people who jump straight to the comments to remind me that Connor Hellebuyck and Jake Oettinger exist.

The conversation I want to have is about how Knight stacks up against the other options for the US: Jeremy Swayman, Thatcher Demko and Joey Daccord.

I won’t deny that Hellebuyck and Oettinger are the present for the United States.

The United States will undoubtedly ride Hellebuyck and Oettinger in the 2026 tournament. But, if the US wants to send the three best goalies at the time, Knight is making a case to be one of the three.

Also remember there will be another Olympic roster to start considering already for 2030. Hellebuyck turns 33 in May. Oettinger turns 27 in December. Swayman turns 27 later this month. Demko turns 30 in early December. Daccord turned 29 in August.

Knight won’t turn 25 until April 19.

Not only is Knight playing as well or better than the other top options at this point, but he’s younger. That might make him a viable option to be one of the top two netminders on the roster in four years when he’s still only 29.

Knight’s Previous International Success

Only five goalies have been drafted in the first round of an NHL draft since Knight in 2019. None of them has been drafted higher than 13th overall, where Florida selected Knight. The last time a goalie was drafted higher than Knight was Jack Campbell, who went 11th overall to the Dallas Stars in 2010.

Knight was the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft because of his exceptional play for the US at the USNTDP and strong performances at U17 and U18 tournaments the season leading up to that draft. In the years that followed, Knight went on to star at Boston College and internationally for the United States as well.

In 2021, Knight pitched a brilliant shutout in the gold medal game at the World Junior Championship. The 2-0 victory — with a US roster that included future Blackhawks forward Landon Slaggert — closed a spectacular tournament for Knight. He went 5-1-0 with three shutouts and a .940 save percentage in six games.

Knight’s play to start the 2025-26 season has been terrific. He’s playing like the young man who was viewed by many as one of the better goaltending prospects in recent years when his draft class came together.

Again, if the United States is looking to send the three best goaltenders at the time, Knight should be squarely in that conversation at this point. If they’re also considering the future, Knight’s age, pedigree, and international success should give him a very strong case to pack his bags for Italy in February.

A BIG Win, Heating Up, Seabrook Celebrates Keith, 900 for Ovi, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks picked up their first win on the road trip on Wednesday night, beating the Canucks 5-2 in Vancouver. This was another game in which the Blackhawks stayed close thanks in large part to exceptional play from their goaltender. Spencer Knight stopped 43 of 45 shots in the game and picked up an assist in the win.

After having the first three games of the road trip end in the loss column even though the play in the game might have favored the Blackhawks more than the scoreboard did at times, they held on through a second period dominated by the Canucks and blew the roof off the joint in the third period with five goals. The penalty kill was perfect. The power play got on the board. The goaltending was strong. And this one ended with a dub.

  • Connor Bedard made a statement in front of his hometown fans that he’s going to another level this year. He extended his personal point streak to six games, during which he has 11 points (five goals, six assists) and three multi-point games. Bedard has five assists in the four games on the road trip.
  • Last year, the Blackhawks had four players score at least 20 goals: Ryan Donato (31), Bedard (23) Tyler Bertuzzi (23) and Ilya Mikheyev (20). Thru last night’s win, the Blackhawks now have five players — Bedard (7), Bertuzzi (6), Donato (6), André Burakovsky (5) and Frank Nazar (5) — with at least five goals scored in the first 14 games of the season.
  • With his hat trick last night, Bertuzzi has six goals already in 14 games. It took him twice as many games (28) to score his sixth goal last year — it happened on Dec. 9 at Madison Square Garden.
  • After a five-game point streak in the middle of October, Donato had only one assist to show for his next five games. He picked up two helpers in the win last night. Hopefully he can go on another streak. Last night was Donato’s third multi-point game of the year.
  • With his apple on the Blackhawks’ second goal last night, Artyom Levshunov has an assist in four of his last five games.
Lukas Reichel went out to dinner with 14 of his former Blackhawks teammates last night here in Vancouver, but there won’t be any friendship tonight.

“I want to show that the Canucks made the right move.”

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 5, 2025
  • Lukas Reichel skated 15:53 last night. He was minus-two, won two of nine faceoffs and was credited with two shots on net and two giveaways.
  • We’re less than one week away from the Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony (it’s Monday night). Which means Duncan Keith will speak in front of cameras. I hope he breaks out his “Braveheart” speech again. For old times’ sake. If you read one thing today, it should be this: Brent Seabrook talking about Duncan Keith. All the feels.
Brent Seabrook is excited to see his close friend and former defense partner, Duncan Keith, inducted into the @HockeyHallFame on the first ballot.

  • For folks looking for Blackhawks prospects in action tonight with no NHL action:
  • OHL

at Peterborough — 6:05 PM CT
Kingston at Windsor — 6:05 PM
  • NCAA
No. 6 Maine at No. 13 UMass — 6:00 PM
  • Great read here from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times on Wyatt Kaiser becoming a critical part of the Blackhawks’ blue line.

  • Ryan Clark at ESPN took a run at predicting the Olympic rosters on Wednesday. He has one Blackhawks skater on a lineup: Teuvo Teräväinen for Finland. Nazar (USA), Bedard (Canada) and Burakovsky (Sweden) are among his Names to Watch.
Gajan was a rock in net for Minnesota Duluth during the first month of the season, starting all nine games while posting an 8-1-0 record. The eight wins led the NCHC and tied for first nationally, while his .931 save percentage and 1.45 goals-against average in October both also led the National, with the 1.45 GAA ranking second in the NCAA. Gajan totaled 176 saves last month, while twice being named NCHC Goaltender of the Week. He allowed one goal or less in six of nine games with one shutout.

  • Nazem Kadri skated in his 1,000th career regular-season game last night. And he scored a goal.
  • Alex Ovechkin made history last night, becoming the first player in NHL history to reach 900 career regular-season goals.
THE #GR8 IS THE FIRST PLAYER IN NHL HISTORY TO SCORE 900 GOALS pic.twitter.com/71gnsJQcYN

— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) November 6, 2025

Blackhawks at Flames — Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

The Blackhawks are coming off a big win in Vancouver, a team they hadn’t beaten since Jan. 31, 2022. Tonight, they invade Calgary to face a Flames team that boasts the following ranks in the NHL:

  • Points: 10 — last (tie)
  • Point Percentage: .333 — last
  • Goals For/game: 2.33 — 31st
  • Goals Against/game: 3.20 — 23rd
  • Power Play: 13.0 — 29th
  • Penalty Kill: 77.8 — 18th
  • Faceoffs: 46.0 — 28th

And yet, the Flames come in riding a two-game win streak (they’ve won four of 15 thus far). I don’t want to say a young team like the Blackhawks needs to avoid a trap game, but the Flames are clearly chasing their chances of landing Gavin McKenna more than they are the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

  • Jason Dickinson is on IR. Laurent Brossoit (hip) and Shea Weber (retired) are out long term.

Calgary Flames

  • Martin Pospisil is on IR.

What to Watch For

  • The big win in Vancouver should give the Blackhawks some optimism and momentum. But that’s only as good as the next game. Which is tonight.
  • Bedard has 11 points during his current six-game point streak. He’s facing a bad defensive team. Line up the fireworks.
  • Nazar, on the other hand, is in a bit of a mini-slump. Let’s see if he can break out against a team that doesn’t have as much speed as the Blackhawks.

Get Caught Up

Connor Bedard is taking a Bigfoot-sized step this season.

He's up to tied-for-9th in the NHL in scoring with 18 points in 14 games.

He's faster. He's winning faceoffs. He's playing solid defense. He looks like a true superstar.

Spencer Knight has been awesome for the #Blackhawks this season. His numbers are among the best in the NHL.

So he should be in the conversation for a spot with @usahockey 🇺🇸 at the 2026 Winter Olympics, right?

Blackhawks 4, Flames 0 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

This set up as a potential trap game for the Blackhawks. Calgary game in with the worst record in the league — but winners of their last two games. This was a game the Blackhawks should win this year.

The first period was pretty even at 5-on-5, but the Blackhawks were able to score a power play goal and kill a penalty in the opening 20 minutes to take a one-goal lead to the room. The Blackhawks were already down one injured forward and there were two fights in the first 2:19 of the second period. After 40 minutes, the Blackhawks had as many goals as they had injured players — and took their one-goal lead to the third period.

That one goal lead expanded with a couple goals that came off pretty passes from Connor Bedard and there was a little more breathing room. Then Bedard added the fourth goal for a four-point night — a goal that will be in a lot of highlight packages this weekend.

Star 1: Connor Bedard

With his assist on Bertuzzi’s goal in the first period, Bedard extended his personal point streak to seven games. With the primary assist on Bertuzzi’s second goal of the night, Bedard has four multi-point games during his streak. With his assist on the third goal of the night from André Burakovsky, Bedard has three games with at least three points already this season. His goal late in the third? Filthy. Dare I say Patrick Kane-esque?

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025

Star 2: Spencer Knight

The Blackhawks started the night with 11 forwards and then lost one in the first period. With three fights, the Blackhawks had an even shorter bench — especially in the second period with the longer change. The Flames had a 7-2 advantage in 5-on-5 high danger chances by the end of the second period and out-shot the Hawks 11-7 in the middle stanza but Knight wasn’t letting anything get through him. He finished the night with a 33-save shutout.

Star 3: Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi might have an office the same way guys like Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos have in the past decade. Bertuzzi’s is just posting up on the back door waiting for a pass to hit him and go into the net. He was in the right place at the right time — again — for a power play goal in the first period tonight. He added his fifth goal in two games early in the third off another feed from Bedard.

GOAL: Tyler Bertuzzi backdoor yet again. It's his fourth goal in two periods pic.twitter.com/TK6FTLpqgi

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025

Key Takeaways

  • With the second assist on Bertuzzi’s second goal and goal later in the period, Burakovsky now has eight points (four goals, four assists) in his last six games. He has points in four of the five games on the road trip. Here’s Burakovsky’s goal:

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025
  • With about seven minutes left in the first period, Joel Farabee got tangled up with Frank Nazar. Nazar went to the room and did not return to the bench or ice the rest of the period. On his next shift, Farabee accepted an invitation from Colton Dach to drop the gloves. Dach had a really good, strong, physical night all around. He would have been my fourth star of the game.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025
  • Nazar had a rough — and, unfortunately, short — night. He got clipped by a high stick from Rasmus Andersson to give the Blackhawks their power play in the first period. He got hurt in the collision with Farabee on his next shift. The Blackhawks ruled Nazar out for the rest of the game after the firest period. Hopefully he’s okay.
  • Early in the second period, MacKenzie Weegar ran Oliver Moore into the boards and Alex Vlasic didn’t appreciate it. Here’s Vlasic fighting Weegar.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025
  • Only 67 seconds after the Vlasic-Weegar fight, Nick Foligno put a good, clean hit on Connor Zary. Joel Hanley didn’t like that and the two danced. Three fights in less than 23 minutes of hockey tonight!
Another fight: Nick Foligno drops the gloves with Joel Hanley after Foligno laid a big hit pic.twitter.com/HVpxOodC7M

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025
  • Matt Grzelcyk had another solid night. He had to pick up a bigger role with Vlasic out for five minutes because of the fight and some of the other moving pieces and he did it well. He had a team-leading four shots on net thru two periods.
  • With his assist on Bertuzzi’s goal in the first period, Artyom Levshunov now has a point in four of the five games on the road trip. He has a power play assist in each of the last two games since he was moved to the top unit.
  • Flames defenseman Zayne Parekh left the game after sustaining an upper-body injury in the second period.

Special Bedard, Nazar Hurt? Another Great Knight, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I want to open our Saturday morning with a great point from Jonny Lazarus. We are indeed watching three generations of superstars in the NHL right now, from Ovi and Crosby to McDavid to Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini. The future of the NHL is happening right in front of us. The game is in a great place. We shouldn’t take times like this for granted as fans.

As hockey fans, we need to take a step back and appreciate what we’re witnessing right now.

We’re watching 3 different generations of NHL superstars.

This is the Golden Age.

— Jonny Lazarus (@JLazzy23) November 6, 2025
  • Bedard wakes up this morning one point back of the NHL leader (Macklin Celebrini — 23) with 22 points. Bedard put four points on the board last night, giving him 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) during his seven-game point streak. The mitts on his goal last night were… Patrick Kane-like? Haters are awfully quiet right now… He became the youngest Blackhawks player ever to reach 150 points in his career last night.
Absolute filth pic.twitter.com/16VS2TIC5G

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) November 8, 2025
  • Spencer Knight was magnificent again last night, pitching his first shutout as a member of the Blackhawks. He now has a .921 save percentage in four starts on the road trip. That includes allowing six goals in Winnipeg! Knight has stopped 103 of 108 shots in his last three games — a .954 save percentage. Just ridiculous.
  • Here’s the play last night where Frank Nazar got tangled up with Joel Farabee. Nazar didn’t return to the game.
Frank Nazar has gone to the locker room. He fell awkwardly here: pic.twitter.com/vPskUKWFzb

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) November 8, 2025
  • Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said after the game Nazar is only day-to-day, which is a great sign.
Frank Nazar is day to day. Jeff Blashill wouldn't even rule him out for Sunday just yet, so the Blackhawks might have dodged a very significant injury there.

— Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) November 8, 2025
  • A good point here from Charlie Roumeliotis on the fighting last night. The Flames were indeed targeting Nazar and Oliver Moore early and often with physical play. I guess when you’re a poverty franchise in dead last place you try to slow guys down by hurting them? So Nick Foligno put a couple good, clean hits on the young guys on the Flames. We’re going to see this a lot as the Blackhawks’ team speed continues to make life miserable for opponents.
Good on Nick Foligno, who recognized Calgary was targeting Frank Nazar and Oliver Moore with a few hits.

He clearly thought: You hit our guys, we'll hit yours. So he laid big hits on Zayne Parekh and Connor Zary, and that's what led to the fight. #Blackhawks https://t.co/4bE3R6B6qI

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) November 8, 2025
  • Going back to guys whose last names are the same but spelled differently, Mark Lazerus sat down with Bedard and Nazar together in Calgary on the off day. This is fabulous. I can imagine Laz trying to make heads or tails out of these two young guys talking about knee surgery and sending memes across the hotel room to crack each other up. Really good stuff.

  • The amount of quit from the veterans on the Flames last night was disappointing. Lots of dirty, cheap hits early and a lot of quit late.

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

  • On the Minnesota high school gridiron scene, Mason West led Edina to an upset of Eden Prairie. They’re on to the state semifinals!

  • In the NCAA ranks, John Mustard had two assists for Providence in their 4-1 win against UConn. Unfortunately, Julius Sumpf had had a goal taken off the board by the officials early in the game. Mustard extended his career-long point streak to eight games; he has a point in every game this season. Mustard now has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in the first eight games this season.
  • Václav Nestrašil had an assist as UMass bounced back with a strong win at home against Maine.
  • Adam Gajan was between the pipes again for Minnesota-Duluth with St. Cloud State visiting. He stopped all 18 shots he faced for his second shutout of the year!

Around the NHL

  • The Buffalo Sabres announced star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is taking a leave of absence and returning to Sweden to be with his fiancé after her heart transplant. Ruff did not provide a timetable for his return.
  • David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period has reported in a couple places this week that the Minnesota Wild are “in the market for a top-six winger, in a perfect world, but has cast a wide net in his search for extra secondary scoring up front.”
  • The Penguins announced forward Filip Hallander was diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg and will miss a minimum of three months.
  • In former Blackhawks news: the Maple Leafs suspended forward David Kampf on Nov. 2 for failure to report to AHL Marlies. Rumors are that the Leafs have been trying to trade him for a while. Contract termination might be in play here.
  • Pagnotta and Frank Seravalli have both reported the Blues are “open for business” already. They’re terrible and, at this time, have a better chance of landing Gavin McKenna than a playoff berth. Not only has their captain’s name been floated by multiple outlets, but Jordan Kyrou was a healthy scratch on Thursday night. Stay tuned here…
As he makes the scouting rounds, #stlblues GM Doug Armstrong has let teams know he's "open for business."
