News Blackhawks Team Notes

Wyatt Kaiser Earning Blackhawks’ Faith, Confidence

Wyatt Kaiser is an important piece of the Chicago Blackhawks’ future.

His name has come up frequently in comments before an after games here and on social media. And we talked about him a lot this summer and all the way up to the start of training camp as his contract negotiations dragged until hours before the first practice in September. His play after he was recalled from Rockford for good was impressive, and led to expectations he could be a significant player for the Blackhawks this season.

Thru the first seven games of the 2025-26 season, Kaiser has backed up the words and data telling us he could be a critical player on the Blackhawks’ blue line. Indeed, we’ve been seeing more GameScore Impact Cards for the Blackhawks with Kaiser listed where he was on Sunday night: near the top.

— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) October 20, 2025

I went to Natural Stat Trick and search for skaters who have played at least 110 minutes thru Sunday’s games. Kaiser ranks tenth overall — ninth among defensemen — in expected Goals For percentage (xGF%) in the entire NHL.

image-39.png

Some of the defensemen who had played at least 110 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time with a lower xGF% than Kaiser: Vladislav Gavrikov, Moritz Seider, Seth Jones, Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber.

According to MoneyPuck, Kaiser ranks 19th out of 119 defensemen in the NHL (with at least 100 minutes played in all situations) in On-Ice Expected Goals Against/60 minutes (2.58). Kaiser’s on-ice goal differential (plus-five) is tied with Lane Hutson, Mikhail Sergachev and Josh Manson for fifth-best in the league in that group.

Matt Marton-Imagn Images

Kaiser has been more physical that we’ve seen in his previous NHL stints. He’s been credited with 10 hits in 7 games (1.42 per game), which is well higher than his career rate (0.83). Kaiser has been credited with six takeaways in seven games; last year, he had a career high 23 takeaways in 57 NHL games. Again, well above what we’ve seen previously.

When we look at the players the Blackhawks have selected in the first rounds of drafts since Kyle Davidson began his aggressive rebuild, so much has been said and written about the pressure on the organization and players for those youngsters to develop into top-tier players. Especially the guys taken at/near the top of the first round.

Artyom Levshunov and Sam Rinzel are viewed as the top defensemen for the future of the Blackhawks. They’ve spent the majority of their ice time early this year with Kaiser and Alex Vlasic, respectively. In many ways, that puts pressure on Kaiser (23) and Vlasic (24) — both of whom are still developing in their own right — to help the progress of the program as a whole.

I’ve referenced it previously, but Mark Lazerus wrote a nice piece on how — and why — Kaiser and Levshunov have worked so well together this season. Helping a young, raw defenseman like Levshunov isn’t an easy assignment for any veteran defenseman. But a guy who has skated a whole 98 NHL games before the start of this season?

There will be moments where we’re reminded Kaiser is still young, like the penalty he took late in the third period on Sunday night. But there are increasingly more moments where he looks like he belongs playing big, important minutes on a team that has bigger aspirations than not drafting in the top five any more.

2026 NHL Draft Watch List: NHL Central Scouting’s First Round Grades

On Monday, NHL Central Scouting released their preliminary watch list for the 2026 NHL Draft.

They rate players as an A, B, C, W or LV, with an “A” grade meaning they’re labeling the player as a first-round prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft. A “B” is a second- or third-round grade, “C” is the fifth or sixth round, “W” is a sixth- or seventh-round grade and “LV” is for limited viewing (usually because of injury).

A couple of the NHL draft writers I cite frequently shared their thoughts on the preliminary watch list:

You will notice a four player are on teams you’ll recognize on the list below because they’re teammates of current Blackhawks prospects. I have noted those players with asterisks after their teams.

Here are the 27 players who received an A grade from NHL Central Scouting on their preliminary watch list for the 2026 NHL Draft.

Blackhawks College Prospects: Ranked Action Including a Battle in Minnesota

Usually I post my college updates and weekend schedule for the Blackhawks on Thursday mornings, but three days between games and the Hawks having an early evening game in Tampa on Thursday gives us an opportunity to look ahead a day earlier than usual.

This new weekend of college hockey marks the first time this season that all four teams with Blackhawks prospects are ranked. Thanks to a hot start from their sophomore netminder, the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs have joined the rankings.

I’m going to have my attention on how Sacha Boisvert plays for Boston University this weekend. He’s missed a few games and has started his sophomore season banged up. Václav Nestrašil‘s hot start at UMass will also have my eyes. He’s on a roll.

Here’s the when and where the Blackhawks’ prospects play their college hockey games this week.

Friday, Oct. 24

No. 11 UConn at No. 4 Boston University — 6 PM
No. 13 UMass at Omaha — 7 PM
No. 19 Minnesota-Duluth at No. 12 Minnesota — 7 PM
No. 14 Providence at St. Thomas (MN) — 7:07 PM

Saturday, Oct. 25

No. 13 UMass at Omaha — 7 PM
No. 19 Minnesota-Duluth at No. 12 Minnesota — 7 PM
No. 14 Providence at St. Thomas (MN) — 7:07 PM

Blackhawks College Prospects

Fly Boys, the Double Standard, Knight’s Success, Marchand’s Return, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Since the Blackhawks took Tuesday off the ice to fly to Florida before playing Tampa on Thursday evening, we’ll start our Wednesday with these fabulous photos from the team boarding the plane. Or, were the young guys flying the plane?

  • With these fun pictures of the young Blackhawks in mind, I want to speak on some bull**** that continues to happen in some areas of hockey media. If you haven’t seen it yet, a video of Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith sitting on the street having a laugh with someone talking about playing the Rangers is making its way around the interwebs. Here it is, with the comment that got me fired up:
it's funny that the sharks are basically having the Blackhawks' season from last year so far but while bedard basically spent the whole year seething with rage these guys have to keep doing cute tiktok stuff https://t.co/4Qft2lLO9F

— JFresh (@JFreshHockey) October 22, 2025
  • First: having actually been in the Blackhawks’ room last year, it is patently false that Connor Bedard was “seething with rage” the entire season. Passionate about winning and frustrated when they lost games? Yes. But I’ve written about his perspective being on the long game since he arrived. This is not accurate whatsoever.
  • Second: who would Bedard have sat on the corner having a latte with to have a comparable moment two weeks into last season? Pat Maroon? Alec Martinez? “Hey, why didn’t Bedard have the fun videos with the other young Blackhawks last year?” fails to recognize there weren’t any other young Blackhawks before the middle of the season. Now? Look at the IG post I opened with this morning.
  • Third: if Bedard had gone out with someone and had a good chuckle on a street corner two weeks into the regular season and the Blackhawks were still winless like the Sharks are now, the narrative would have been that Bedard doesn’t care or that he’s checked out and wants be traded out of Chicago — not that he’s a fun young guy. It’s a real shame Bedard couldn’t go on Spittin’ Chiclets last year and tell fun stories about a teammate leaving crap in their bathroom on the road. What an image breaker for the young man! He’ll never be the face of the league!
  • Look, I love the work JFresh does and don’t want to put them specifically, personally on blast here. But this is another example of how the Sharks get a pass and get to be the fun young team while the Blackhawks — who wake up on Wednesday in a wild card spot by the way — will forever be the team/organization that sucks and isn’t allowed to be fun.
For all of the excitement around Frank Nazar and Connor Bedard … have the #Blackhawks found their goalie?

Spencer Knight has been lights out to start the season.

  • Now, on to another story. Let’s talk a little about hos magnificent Spencer Knight has been this season. But, as Ben Pope wrote, the Blackhawks’ defensive systems and structure are built around what Knight does well. Really good piece here on those dynamics early this season.
The Blackhawks' new defensive system allows fewer shots but gives goalies less support on rebounds.

That plays into Spencer Knight's strengths while minimizing his weaknesses. And so far, Knight has been spectacular.

New story: https://t.co/snrpRt6HkA

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 21, 2025
  • Let’s talk a little about development for a moment. Nick Lardis is off to a great start to his professional career in Rockford. He was named the AHL Player of the Week for the first week of the year on Monday. Tuesday, he spoke with the media in Rockford about how he’s taking to the pro ranks.

  • While we’re talking development, Louis Crevier is already a success story. Only two players drafted after the end of the fourth round in 2020 have appeared in more regular-season games than Crevier to date, and he’s establishing himself as a legitimate NHL defenseman. Good read here from Scott Powers on how Crevier has emerged as a solid defenseman for the Blackhawks — not just a tall guy on the blue line.
Stories about Blackhawks defenseman Louis Crevier used to focus on him being a seventh-round pick and him being 6-foot-8. Now, he's proving he's much more than that.

That story ⤵️ https://t.co/LITup0uHko

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 21, 2025
  • Tough news from Rockford on Tuesday: forward Paul Ludwinski will be out for the remainder season with a left knee injury. Ludwinski was a second-round pick (No. 39 overall) by the Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL Draft. He appeared in 65 games for the IceHogs last year, his first full professional season. His 2025-26 campaign is being cut short after only three games.
  • The Colorado Avalanche are celebrating their 30th anniversary… in Denver. On Tuesday, they introduced their Quebec Nordiques specialty jerseys, which will be worn for for seven games during the regular season. Sadly, they won’t wear them against the Blackhawks. But they will wear them against the Carolina Hurricanes a couple times — and the Canes are going to dust off their Hartford Whalers throwbacks!

  • Apparently the Islanders fired their goalie coach last night after only beating the Sharks 4-3. According to Elliotte Friedman on Wednesday morning, “Sergei Naumov — who was at AHL Bridgeport and has a history with Ilya Sorokin — replaces Piero Greco.”
  • Yes, the Sharks are now 0-4-2. They remain the final winless team in the NHL.
  • Speaking of the Islanders, apparently the goalie coach’s office keys weren’t the only thing taken away at UBS Arena last night. Emily Kaplan at ESPN reported there will no longer be an Olympic sendoff event this season. They’ll get the 2027 NHL All-Star Game instead.
All Star news: NHL canceling Olympic sendoff event at UBS Arena in February. NHL & NHLPA decided to allow players to focus on their preparation and travel to Milan.

Traditional NHL All Star Game and Skills Competition is returning. Feb 5-7 2027 at UBS Arena on Long Island.

  • Finally, Brad Marchand returned to Boston for the first time as a member of the Florida Panthers last night. Kudos to the Bruins for a terrific tribute video and the fans for letting the former captain know how much they appreciate him. This certainly sets the bar for when a certain former captain returns to Chicago later this season…

Blackhawks 3, Lightning 2 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks invaded Tampa, and their fans were there. You could hear the Hawks fans in the stands throughout the game, and the Blackhawks gave their fans reasons to be excited. Chicago scored goals in each of the first two periods and had some other good chances. But the game was tied at two after 40 minutes.

The Blackhawks got a power play early in the third period and Yanni Gourde caught Connor Bedard in the mouth with his stick, cutting Bedard pretty well. The Hawks got 37 seconds of a 5-on-3 and Gourde was hit with a double minor for drawing (a good amount of) blood. But they didn’t have Bedard on the ice for the two-man advantage while Bedard got repairs. Tampa killed all three penalties, and the Blackhawks went short-handed almost immediately after the clock expired on their advantage. But an even strength goal won it for the Blackhawks.

Star 1: Ryan Donato

Donato scored for the fourth straight game in the middle of the second period to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. He then scored his fifth goal of the season with 53 seconds left in regulation to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 24, 2025

Star 2: Spencer Knight

The Lightning carried the action in the first period before penalties took things off the rails. And Knight was once again brilliant. He stopped all 11 shots he faced in the opening 20 minutes. He made one ridiculous save on a Nikita Kucherov scoring chance in the first period. The first goal Tampa scored came after a brilliant save; Tampa tried to shoot the puck off his backside, but it went reverse five-hole all the way back to the point. I’m not sure Knight ever saw the puck on the way back through traffic.

Star 3: Frank Nazar

Nazar rifled home a power play goal in the first period to get the Blackhawks on the board. He was the most accurate shooter on the Blackhawks and was taking a big portion of the faceoffs. His shot created the juicy rebound that Donato deposited for the lead inside the final minute of regulation.

Key Takeaways

  • Teuvo Teräväinen had two assists in the game. He was excellent.
  • I’ve got absolutely, positively no problem with Nick Foligno going after Mitchell Chaffee for boarding Sam Rinzel in the first period. Those are the penalties your teammates kill because they’re necessary. That wasn’t a clean hit by Chaffee. Rinzel was bleeding above his left eye and went to the room for repairs.
  • Natural Stat Trick had the 5-on-5 shot attempts at 15-8 in favor of Tampa in the first period, but the Blackhawks had a 2-1 advantage in high danger chances at even strength.
  • The 5-on-5 shot attempts thru two periods favored Tampa 44-22. High danger chances were tied at five each. The score on the scoreboard was also tied — at two.
  • Colton Dach had a really good first period. He was tied with Landon Slaggert for the team lead with four hits thru two periods. I like how Dach was attacking the front of the net and working to get the puck. He had a good scoring chance early in the first but couldn’t quite finish.
  • Slaggert also looked a lot more comfortable at game speed in his second game back from injury. Here’s a good rush from early in the third period. Unfortunately he was called for hooking with 11:39 left in the third period.
Slaggert uses his speed to create a chance on the first shift of the third pic.twitter.com/h7eZ3vDHDg https://t.co/4MSFuUMSR4

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 24, 2025
  • The Blackhawks getting clipped for too many men on the ice while skating 4-on-4 is a penalty that can’t happen, though.
  • Ryan Greene got some run during the power play and 4-on-4 ice time tonight. It appears the coaches are getting more comfortable with him in more situations.
  • I honestly didn’t notice Lukas Reichel dressed for the game before he was credited with the only assist on Donato’s goal. At the end of the second period, Reichel had skated 9:48 with one assist, one giveaway, two blocked shots and was minus-one. He was stapled to the bench in the third period, even with the Blackhawks having almost six straight minutes of power play time.
  • The Blackhawks got a power play late in the third period but Rinzel killed it for Tampa; he got called for holding JJ Moser (who had just made a nice play to take a chance away from Nazar). The Hawks have taken penalties while on the power play a few times more than one would like this year. Need to clean that up.

A Good Win, Reichel Rumors, Mikheyev’s Value, Kantserov Stays Hot, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks won a really good game last night. They skated into Tampa and played a Lightning team that needed to get its act together. From the reports I heard and read, the Bolts’ coaches let them know it was about time to get their stuff together and start winning games. They didn’t play a bad game last night, either. The Blackhawks just didn’t get the memo that the veteran team is supposed to win games in that situation. Which was lovely.

A few quick thoughts about the game last night:

  • No, they didn’t win all of the faceoffs. The Blackhawks won 20 of 51 total draws in the game (39 percent). Nick Foligno (9 for 20) and Frank Nazar (5 for 15) took 35 of the 51 faceoffs. It’s really not ideal to have two guys taking the majority of the draws. Nazar was actually over 50 percent at the dot until Jon Cooper put Anthony Cirelli against him; Cirelli won all seven faceoffs he took against Nazar in the second half of the game. The advantage of being the home team.
  • No, they didn’t out-shoot the Lightning. The final totals were 31-25 in favor of Tampa. Nazar led the Blackhawks with four shots on goal, followed by three each from Ryan Donato and Connor Bedard. The number that matters most to me in this category is the Blackhawks out-shot the Lightning 12-9 in the third period and won the game. In recent years, if a game was tied heading to the third, the Blackhawks were more than likely going to get out-shot and lose the game. Last night they were the aggressor and won the game on a break that was well-executed and displayed the elite speed they have as a team — that’s going to be a problem for a lot of people moving forward.
  • They beat Andrei Vasilevskiy — who had a good night, for what it’s worth. So the “they beat another backup goalie” excuse isn’t valid.
  • Here’s Nazar’s interview from the first intermission last night:

  • I am fairly confident that the Blackhawks have some things planned for the Centennial season that have not been formally announced yet.

  • David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported on Friday that the Blackhawks are still actively trying to find Lukas Reichel a new home. Pagnotta reports the Blackhawks are looking for a draft pick as compensation, and the “Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings, among others” have expressed interest.

  • Ilya Mikheyev has been incredibly valuable to the Blackhawks since he was acquired in a salary dump trade with the Canucks last summer. (As a reminder: the Hawks traded a fourth-round pick in 2027 to Vancouver for Mikheyev and a second-round pick in 2027.) Mikheyev scored 20 goals and posted a career-high 34 points last year, and has been an exceptional defensive player; he received a vote for the Selke Trophy last year. Ben Pope wrote about his immense impact on the penalty kill.
Ilya Mikheyev has given a Herculean effort to keep the Blackhawks' overworked penalty kill afloat this month.

His teammates and coaches are amazed.

  • Good read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic on Donato’s start to the season. This was written before Donato scored twice last night. Writers love it when they put something out about a guy doing something well and they then do it in the game that night, so kudos to Scott for getting the proof from Donato on the ice last night.

  • The Nashville Predators recalled forward Matthew Wood from Milwaukee.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes announced defenseman Jaccob Slavin has been placed on injured reserve. He is eligible to return at any time; they did it for roster flexibility.
  • Reports on Thursday are that Zach Hyman is nearing a return for the Oilers. If he is available for their game on Nov. 1, that would be in Edmonton with the Blackhawks visiting.

Blackhawks Trade Lukas Reichel to Vancouver

The Blackhawks finally found a new home for forward Lukas Reichel.

On Friday afternoon, the Blackhawks traded Reichel to the Vancouver Canucks for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Reichel, 23, was originally a first-round pick by the Blackhawks (No. 17 overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. He leaves Chicago having appeared in 174 games over five seasons, scoring 22 goals with 36 assists. He was minus-60 in his Blackhawks career.

Before the trade, the Blackhawks did not have a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Ironically, the Hawks traded that pick to Vancouver for Ilya Mikheyev and a second-round pick in 2027. (LOL) Chicago now has seven picks in the 2027 NHL Draft, including one first-round pick, two second-round picks, one third-round pick, one fourth-round pick, one sixth-round pick, and one seventh-round pick.

Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson’s History of Strong Trading with Vancouver

On Friday afternoon, the Blackhawks and Canucks made a trade. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as the two teams have been dumping pieces they didn’t know to do with on each other for years.

That’s especially been the case since Kyle Davidson became the general manager of the Blackhawks. Since taking over as the interim GM, Davidson has made five separate trades with the Canucks.

As a reminder: I continue to have Davidson’s entire history as the Blackhawks’ general manager here.

However, this is a trend that actually pre-dates Davidson becoming the interim general manager of the Blackhawks. On April 21, 2021, then-GM Stan Bowman traded defenseman Madison Bowey with a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (Jonathan Myrenberg) for a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. That fourth rounder (No. 105 overall) became Ethan Del Mastro.

Let’s consider the five trades Davidson has now made with the Canucks since becoming the general manager of the Blackhawks.

Kyle Davidson — Canucks Trade History

  • Oct. 7, 2022 – traded defenseman Riley Stillman to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Jason Dickinson and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 61 – subsequently traded to the New York Islanders).
Not really sure if I need to dig into this one again here because I’ve been celebrating it for more than three years. Dickinson has been a terrific leader in the room, he’s been excellent on the ice and he was acquired for a surplus defenseman who has played for three NHL teams and three AHL teams since the deal.

  • Nov. 28, 2023 – traded a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (No. 131 – Colton Roberts) to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Anthony Beauvillier.
The Blackhawks rented Beauvillier through a portion of the 2023-24 season in which injuries — including one to him, unfortunately — crushed their roster. Beauvillier scored two goals with four assists in 23 games for the Blackhawks before he was flipped to Nashville at the deadline (also for a fifth-round pick). The Blackhawks effectively rented Beauvillier for the cost of seven spots in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

One other side note here: the fifth-round pick the Blackhawks got from Nashville for Beauvillier was transferred to Toronto to complete the McCabe/Lafferty trade. That trade specified that the Blackhawks would send their least favorable pick in the fifth round to the Leafs. Chicago was able to keep No. 138 (Joel Svensson) because of this deal.

  • June 27, 2024 – traded their fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Ilya Mikheyev, the rights to pending UFA forward Sam Lafferty and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
Pure salary dump a second time by the Canucks, this time sending the Blackhawks the final two years of Mikheyev’s contract at the cost of moving the Blackhawks up from the fourth to the second round of the 2027 NHL Draft. Since arriving in Chicago, Miheyev’s legs are back and he’s been one of the best defensive wingers in the entire NHL.

  • June 28, 2025 – traded the rights to forward Ilya Safonov to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations.
Safonov is a big center who, at one time, was an interesting prospect for the Blackhawks. As time went on and he remained in Russia, the depth at center in the organization got significantly deeper. Maybe the Blackhawks owed the Canucks a little something?

Our first full-circle moment as GMKD gets his own fourth-round pick that was sent to the Canucks in the Mikheyev trade. The Blackhawks give Reichel his fresh start, and effectively trade Reichel to Vancouver for two seasons of Mikheyev and a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Knight Helping Hawks Learn to Win, Bertuzzi TBD, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

With the Blackhawks back on the ice tonight at the United Center, I wanted to swing back to this story from Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times because, in part, if it’s excellent framing. We’ve been talking in this space since July — when the Blackhawks didn’t overwhelm in free agency and made it clear they were going to be much younger this year — that there are going to be mistakes this season. A lot of them. Young players whiff sometimes. And the 2025-26 Blackhawks season is going to be about learning moments, the learning curve and how quickly/how well the young players make the adjustments needed to start winning games.

What I like so much about how Ben wrote this is that the young Blackhawks are still making mistakes. Some of those are costing them penalties and goals. But they’re starting to find ways to win games in spite of those errors. And that, dear friends, happening a week before Halloween is really exciting.

The Blackhawks are still making plenty of mistakes, and Spencer Knight’s torrid streak is covering up some flaws.

But the Hawks also are finding ways to win, which matters. They did so again last night in Tampa.

  • Nashville all-star defenseman Roman Josi is out week-to-week. We’ll see if that’s long enough that the Blackhawks miss him in their first game against the Preds on Black Friday at the end of November.
  • The Canadiens announced forward Patrik Laine had surgery for a core muscle injury and will miss the next four months.

Hey, how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

  • In the AHL, Drew Commesso pitched a 38-save shutout for the IceHogs to move into third place all-time in shutouts for Rockford.

  • In the college ranks, Adam Gajan won another game as Minnesota-Duluth swept Minnesota. Gajan stopped 27 of 28 last night. Remember all the people who said he was a wasted pick because he wasn’t that good last year when he was an injured college freshman? Those were good times…
  • Boston University beat UConn 3-1. Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert picked up an assist in the win.
  • Blackhawks prospect Václav Nestrašil scored his sixth goal of the season and added an assist but UMass lost 5-2 to Omaha.

Blackhawks 1, Kings 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks might have been able to get away with some little miscues here and there against their last few opponents, but a good, veteran team like LA isn’t going to let them off the hook. They didn’t tonight. And it cost the Blackhawks a game with a few bad shifts early in the second period.

This game started pretty well, though. There were really very few things to complain about after 20 minutes. The Blackhawks out-shot the Kings 11-6, had a 17-10 shot attempt advantage at 5-on-5, won 10 of 18 total faceoffs (including 3-for-3 from Connor Bedard) and had the game’s only goal. If we want to nitpick, the power play wasn’t great. But the Blackhawks did a nice job of controlling things in the first.

The second period was a trainwreck from start to finish. Wyatt Kaiser got clipped for slashing Alex Laferriere 30 seconds into the period (the Blackhawks killed that penalty). Kaiser and Sam Rinzel got themselves into some trouble three minutes later when Rinzel got his pocket picked, resulting in Laferriere tying the game. Unfortunately, Kaiser got caught on the wrong end of a Kevin Fiala breakaway less than 90 seconds later and the Kings quickly took a 2-1 lead.

The Blackhawks started the third period on a penalty kill, but Ilya Mikheyev killed it by himself; he got a penalty called on Adrian Kempe 20 seconds into the third. He didn’t return and the Blackhawks’ offense failed to ever find its groove from the first period again. An empty net goal from Joel Armia with 68 seconds remaining closed the books on a very lackluster loss.

Star 1: Connor Bedard

Bedard scored the game’s first goal, won all three of his faceoff attempts and was credited with a team-leading three shots on goal in the first period.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 26, 2025

Star 2: Ilya Mikheyev

Mikheyev’s speed was evident on almost every shift, but especially on the penalty kill. We’ve talked about him being arguably the best penalty killing wing in the league early this season, and he showed that off tonight. He was credited with two hits and two takeaways in the first two periods. That speed on the penalty kill got a penalty called on Kempe when the Blackhawks needed to start the third period with some momentum. Unfortunately, he appeared to be favoring his arm/shoulder after crashing into the boards and went straight to the room.

Ilya Mikheyev has not taken a shift since sliding into the boards hard here: pic.twitter.com/W4xX1L5UKC

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 27, 2025

Star 3: Teuvo Teräväinen

Teräväinen had another quietly really good game tonight. He was on the ice a lot (second-highest ice time among Blackhawks forwards behind Bedard), actually shot the puck (had two on net) and was solid defensively as well. Teräväinen’s expected Goals For percentage (xGF%) was around 70 percent all night — also the highest on the Blackhawks roster.

Key Takeaways

  • On the shift before Bedard scored the game’s first goal, Colton Dach had a very good shift. He was physical in the corners and behind the net and had three potential scoring chances that just didn’t finish. Dach was on the ice for a team-best 8-0 Corsi For advantage for the Blackhawks in 3:24 at 5-on-5 in the first period.
  • The Blackhawks’ record (read: their goaltending) has allowed some troubling early trends to be overlooked. One of those is the Hawks getting away from their structure in the second period after a really good first, and then scrambling themselves into bad penalties that crush any attempt to get back into a flow offensively. Tonight wasn’t the first time we’ve seen that — it probably won’t be the last, either.
  • Kaiser has had better nights. The second period was tough for him, but he was far from alone in that regard on the Chicago bench.

— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) October 27, 2025
  • I know there are people in the comments here that are sick of me saying it, but mistakes are learning experiences. Rinzel had a big one early in the second period when he got his pocket picked trying to make a play just inside the blue line. There are going to be moments when his offensive instincts make us say “wow.” Tonight, that moment made many of us say… something else.
  • The Blackhawks power play hasn’t been good yet this season. It’s clicked in moments, but the overall experience has been underwhelming. It might be time to reconsider the personnel in a few spots.
  • Jason Dickinson had a terrific night at the dot against one of the better faceoff teams in the league.
  • Arvid Söderblom had a solid night in net. He kept this a one-goal game a few times in the second and early in the third period.
  • In the first period, Nick Foligno hit Warren Foegele in the corner and it appeared to injure Foegele’s right arm. The hit didn’t look bad or malicious, but Foegele stayed down in pain for a moment and then went straight to the room favoring his arm. Here’s that play:

Is Ilya Mikheyev the Most Valuable Defensive Wing in the NHL?

On Sunday night, the Blackhawks lost a game to the Los Angeles Kings. Early in the third period, forward Ilya Mikheyev put his speed on display while killing a penalty. He was in the process of creating a potential scoring chance — skating 1-on-3, I might add — when he got tripped. Mikheyev went into the boards hard behind the LA net and left the game. He did not return.

Ilya Mikheyev has not taken a shift since sliding into the boards hard here: pic.twitter.com/W4xX1L5UKC

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 27, 2025

Mikheyev’s status was left at day-to-day by Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill after the game, saying the team would hopefully know more on Monday. Mikheyev was seen leaving the United Center without any noticeable bandages/sling/wrap on his right arm.

Hopefully that’s a good sign that the injury wasn’t serious. Because Mikheyev has become the most valuable defensive winger in the entire NHL.

Ilya Mikheyev’s Value

Mikheyev’s speed makes him dangerous in all situations. Thru Thursday’s game in Tampa (the most recent game included in NHL EDGE stats when I’m writing this on Monday morning), Mikheyev’s 27 speed bursts between 20-22 mph rank in the 95th percentile in the NHL.

That speed was a question mark during his two injury-plagued seasons in Vancouver; it impacted his production on the ice without question has he worked his way back from a season-ending ACL injury suffered in January of 2023. That led the Canucks to feel the need to get his contract off their books, which has benefitted the Blackhawks tremendously since he was acquired before the 2024-25 season.

Mikheyev’s legs were back under him last year and he rebounded to have a terrific season. He scored 20 goals and had a career-high 34 points. And he received a vote for the Selke Trophy, which is given to the best defensive forward in the NHL.

Wingers getting considered for the Selke is hard to do. Marian Hossa was one of the best defensive forwards of his generation and he never won the award. It’s been given almost exclusively to centers. So Mikheyev even getting a single vote — especially on a team with a bad record — was both a surprise and a worthy acknowledgement of his performance defensively.

Starting his second season in Chicago, Mikheyev has been phenomenal.

Ilya Mikheyev Chicago Blackhawks

Perry Nelson-Imagn Images

Thru Sunday’s game against the Kings, the Blackhawks have spent 60:39 killing penalties in nine games. Mikheyev has been on the ice for 36:30 of that short-handed ice time. That’s more than 60 percent of the Blackhawks’ penalty killing time. It’s also more than 15 full minutes more than any other forward on the Blackhawks thru nine games (Teuvo Teräväinen is second at 21:43).

Mikheyev is averaging 4:03 per game of short-handed ice time. That leads all NHL forwards entering Monday’s action by 30 seconds per game. His total short-handed ice time (36:30) is more than four minutes more than any other forward in the entire NHL entering Monday.

According to NHL.com, Mikheyev has generated six short-handed individual shot attempts (SH iSAT) and three short-handed shots on net already. His six SH iSAT ranks third in the entire NHL entering Monday’s action behind Calgary’s Blake Coleman and Monteal’s Jake Evans, both of whom have played ten games to Mikheyev’s nine.

The Blackhawks’ penalty kill ranks tenth in the NHL thru Sunday’s action at 85 percent. The Hawks have allowed six power play goals against. Opponents have scored three power play goals while Mikheyev has been on the ice.

Among players who have appeared in at least eight games thru Sunday, Mikheyev’s on-ice even strength goals for percentage of 85.7 is tied for fourth-best in the NHL.

I’ll point out again at this point that the Blackhawks not only got Mikheyev from Vancouver with a second-round pick in 2027 for a fourth-round pick in 2027 (which they just got back on Friday in the Lukas Reichel trade), but they also got the Canucks to retain 15 percent ($712,500) of Mikheyev’s cap hit for the two years he’ll be in Chicago.

Mikheyev being healthy this season will play a huge role in the Blackhawks taking the step forward competitively that they want to (and fans expect). His play defensively has allowed the coaches to focus other players’ ice time and efforts on other aspects of the game early in the year. If he continues to make the impact that he has early on, Mikheyev should be worthy of more than one vote for the Selke Trophy this year.

Learning From a Loss, Mikheyev’s Status, Rinzel’s Oops, Traded at Portillo’s? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I asked Connor Bedard after the Blackhawks’ 3-1 loss last night about the Kings’ style of play — specifically from the perspective that the Blackhawks have been preaching process thru the lens of playoff approach/intensity. The Kings play a very specific style of game that suits their personnel. Bedard said the Kings play was “boring” — but did it in a way that he was very intentional to say it was “not a dig.” Just that the Kings crowded the blue line when the Hawks wanted to enter the zone and made a young, fast team play in the mud with them. Both Bedard and head coach Jeff Blashill said that’s something the Blackhawks will need to learn from.

Five minutes of mistakes were all it took to seal the Blackhawks' fate tonight against a Kings team that knows how to protect a lead.

"I think we stopped taking what was given."

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 27, 2025
  • Doug Armstrong, who responsible for putting together Canada’s roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics, was at the United Center to watch Bedard and Drew Doughty.
  • After the game the best we could get from Blashill regarding forward Ilya Mikheyev‘s injury was that they’ll “know more tomorrow.” Meaning the Blackhawks will need to chat with him on Monday to see how he’s doing. We did see Mikheyev leaving the United Center last night and he didn’t appear to be requiring anything to stabilize a shoulder or anything else.
  • Tyler Bertuzzi did not play last night. The only update we got from Blashill after the morning skate was that he remains day-to-day. So we’ll likely have to play wait-and-see for Tuesday night’s game with both Bertuzzi and Mikheyev. Maybe they’ll actually put Sam Lafferty into a game?
  • Sam Rinzel didn’t have his best game last night. Blashill talked about him learning from moments like the one that turned into the first goal of the game for the Kings. We saw a lot of moments in Bedard’s first season in the NHL where he tried to do things that he got away with at previous levels and found out quickly that it won’t work in the NHL. There are still moments where a lot of the young guys on the Blackhawks are learning that.
  • Ben Pope wrote a good piece about Rinzel’s improving play at 5-on-5 before the game last night that’s still true, even if the results against the Kings weren’t his best.
During Sam Rinzel's 5v5 ice time the last 4 games, the Blackhawks are up 5-1 in goals with a 59.8% xG ratio.

Things are coming together for him. Story: https://t.co/PncH2KjziT

  • I really liked how Landon Slaggert played last night. After looking back at a few things, his relentless attack of the puck in the offensive zone is why this coaching staff likes him so much. He blocked a shot late in the third period that sounded like a shotgun going off. The buck bounced off him so far that it created an offensive rush for the Blackhawks the other way.
  • Marek Vanacker had an assist in a 4-1 win for Brantford last night.
  • Jack Pridham had an assist on the game-winning goal for Kitchener in a 3-1 win last night.
  • Apparently Lukas Reichel was redefining what a “to go” order is on Friday. He told the media in Vancouver he was in a parking lot outside a Portillo’s getting food with Teuvo Teräväinen when he got the call that he had been traded. As far as last meals in Chicago go, he could have done worse….

  • The Penguins announced forward Rickard Rakell will miss the next 6-8 weeks after having surgery on his left hand on Sunday.
  • On Sunday morning, multiple outlets reported Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love was suspended by the NHL for the entire 2025-26 season following an investigation into alleged domestic abuse. On Sunday afternoon, Love’s title changed to former Capitals assistant coach.
Mitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The organization is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability.

Blackhawks Draft-and-Develop Roster Building Approach Increasingly the NHL Reality

We continue to talk our way thru the Blackhawks’ building process, and the progress we’re starting to see on the NHL ice with younger players beginning to impact the top-level product has started to provide some confidence that the draft-and-develop route the Blackhawks have taken is bearing fruit.

But there are still consistent, constant conversations all over Blackhawks nation about how — and with whom — the organization can bolster their roster to go from nice to seriously dangerous. Patience is a virtue, but it’s rarely practiced by sports fans. Especially during a lengthy rebuild.

With the Blackhawks having a truckload of cap space to play with in coming summers — as they had this past summer — there are some expectations that they can and will spend that money to improve the club. This past summer, to the dismay of many in this space, the Blackhawks were not extremely aggressive

One frustration point for many Blackhawks fans has been the lack of elite players ever hitting the market. Mitch Marner was never available in 2025. And, as we look ahead to 2026, I have already spent time here sharing the potential big-ticket players who won’t be hitting the market. Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Kirill Kaprizov and Kyle Connor have already signed extensions with their current clubs.

Big names rarely hit the market. And, with the NHL’s salary cap continuing to go up aggressively in the coming years, that reality is going to be increasingly rare.

So how are teams getting their best players?

How NHL Teams Are Building

On Tuesday, Shayna Goldman at The Athletic took the publication’s Player Tiers project that ranks the top 150 players and did some in-depth digging to discuss how those players arrived at their current locations.

This is an especially important exercise for fans of teams like the Blackhawks that have been focused on building thru the draft. Because what Goldman provides gives us some very real data from which we can realistically project how the next steps are taken by franchises.

While we might disagree on how and where they ranked the top 150 players in the game, how they got to their current teams is important context.

This specific graph in the piece feels especially important for some in the Blackhawks’ fan base who still believe free agency is going to supply the magic pill that turns the team into a championship roster overnight. Here’s a breakdown of how the current employers of the top 150 players acquired said players:

image-45.png

Source: The Athletic

Yes, 60 (sixty) percent of their top 150 players are still with the team that drafted them. If we include trades, 129 of the top 150 — 86 percent — were not added to their current roster via free agency.

The point being: assuming another Marian Hossa will appear like manna from heaven right when the Chicago Blackhawks have the right amount of cap space and the perfect situation to sign that player is, sadly, the same logic we employ when we buy a single ticket for the Powerball. Is there a chance? Sure. Are the odds good? Hell no.

Obviously, the outlier in this discussion is the team that’s won the last two Stanley Cup championships: the Florida Panthers. They have been fortunate to make some brilliant trades (Matthew Tkachuk) and one incredible waiver claim (Gustav Forsling) to supplement really good drafting.

As we look into the future of the Blackhawks, the fact that they’ve had as many first-round picks as they have (like Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, Sam Rinzel, Artyom Levshunov) picks in the later rounds (like Landon Slaggert, Ryan Greene) and guys who are just starting to turn pro and make an impact (Nick Lardis, Oliver Moore), bodes well for the Blackhawks to not only have internal options to build around, but also the ability to trade for the right pieces if/when the opportunities present themselves.

Big Bounce Back, Bedard’s Mojo, Nazar’s Compete, Hot Prospects, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

It wasn’t perfect. Heck, it wasn’t even pretty at times. The second period felt like the same script we’ve seen too many times already this year — especially against a team that was playing the second half of a back-to-back. Young guys made mistakes. The foot came off the gas pedal for about five minutes and things went from lovely to uncomfortable real quick.

But you know what? Unlike the games against Vancouver and Los Angeles — the two previous back-to-back opponents — the second period implosion did not do the Blackhawks in completely. They didn’t lost the game. In fact, the Blackhawks came out of the room with a one-goal lead for the third period and proceeded to score three unanswered goals. They got hit — illegally, frequently — and fought back. They took their shots and continued to play hockey. And, when the final horn sounded, the Blackhawks had put a 7-3 beating on a pretty good Ottawa Senators team that came in playing quite well.

  • Let’s not get it twisted: Connor Bedard is playing like a young man who’s on a mission this year. When he get slashed, he whacks back. When he gets tripped, he gets up and chases down the puck. And when he gets an inch of daylight, he’s making something happen that results in a goal on the board for the Blackhawks. Last night was a great showcase game on a big national night for the NHL with a lot of extra eyeballs on hockey for the Frozen Frenzy. A reminder that Bedard might not be a finished product, but he can do some spectacular things on ice.

  • Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Frank Nazar scored a short-handed goal and added an assist as well last night. He spent 3:51 of his 17:33 on the ice killing penalties and the Senators — who own the No. 2 power play in the entire NHL — were 0-for-4 with the advantage. Without Ilya Mikheyev available, Nazar stepped into a more prominent role on the PK and was terrific.
  • Speaking of Mikheyev, head coach Jeff Blashill said he’ll travel with the team for the six-game swing and they hope he can play in Winnipeg on Thursday night. But still consider Mikheyev day-to-day.
  • I asked Blashill about Tyler Bertuzzi coming back from injury and jumping into the fight when things got chippy in the third period. Blashill described Bertuzzi as a “foxhole guy” who he’d go to battle with any day of the week. You can tell Bertuzzi has the respect of his teammates, and it’s because he’s willing to get into it even if he’s not 100 percent physically.

How about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

  • I wrote about Nick Lardis making a strong impression in the AHL last night after he had a big afternoon for the IceHogs. He’s tied for the AHL lead in points.
  • Oliver Moore is tied for the AHL lead with six goals, the latest of which came in the first period against the Wolves on Tuesday. He also had an assist in the first period. Here’s his goal:

  • Kevin Korchinski also had two assists in a big win for the Blackhawks’ prospects on Tuesday. Unfortunately, Korchinski was on the receiving end of a filthy dirty hit by noted ECHL goon Yannick Turcotte, who was playing for the Wolves for some reason. He should get a call from the AHL league office and have a few extra free days to consider this cheap shot.
Here’s the hit on Kevin Korchinski by Yannick Turcotte. Expect a suspension for that one. From behind, high, into the boards. A dirty hit from an ECHL goon. Mylymok may receive one for coming off the bench, but oh well. Good to see the Hogs standing up for each other. pic.twitter.com/2Ws0xi3gxW

Blackhawks 7, Senators 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The message from head coach Jeff Blashill to his players after the Blackhawks lost to the Kings on Sunday evening was pretty simple. When you get a team in the second half of a back-to-back, don’t take your foot off the gas. And take advantage of your opportunities.

Against the Kings, the Blackhawks dominated the first period but skated away with only one goal. Tonight, the Blackhawks put three goals on the board before the opening 20 minutes came to a close. And, when that horn sounded, the fans at the United Center gave the players a well-deserved ovation.

The Blackhawks took a 4-0 lead with one of the easiest goals you’ll ever see… and then the wheels came off completely. Jake Sanderson scored at 4:58, Michael Amadio scored at 7:09 and, when Tim Stützle scored at 8:31 the previously exuberant crowd at the United Center was now quiet and nervous — and the four-goal lead was down to only one. The lead stayed one into the second intermission.

Thankfully, Connor Bedard checked something off the “haven’t done that yet” list and his third goal padded the lead. A Bedard rebound then found Ryan Donato for goal No. 6 for the Hawks on the night and there was some breathing room again. The cheap shots weren’t done, and the Blackhawks weren’t done scoring. But the Hawks were able to finish the job this time.

Star 1: Connor Bedard

Bedard absolutely ripped his power play goal in the first period (that’s in the key takeaways) for his fourth goal of the season. His second goal of the night was also a well placed shot. But… look. I’m not saying the Senators are trying to get someone fired but the effort on this coast-to-coast free skate from Bedard leaves a lot to be desired in Ottawa. Bedard’s second goal of the night was the 50th of his NHL career. His 51st career goal completed the first hat trick of his NHL career!

Star 2: Louis Crevier

Coming into tonight’s game, Crevier had nine points in 64 career regular-season games. He had two points 12:06 into the first period tonight! During the second period, Crevier went down after taking a shot to the knee that kept him from putting weight on his leg. He was able to get to the bench and went straight to the room. Thankfully, he was able to return to the game.

Star 3: Colton Dach

You know how there have been lots of complaints about “if only Dach could finish one of those juicy rebounds?” early in the season? Yeah, he got one tonight in the first period and put it home. Dach was a physical player in the first period as well. He was only credited with one hit, but he threw his body around pretty well a few times.

Key Takeaways

  • Ryan Donato had a very physical game. He had three big hits in the second period. His goal in the third period really allowed fans to exhale a little.

  • The move of André Burakovsky onto the top power play unit paid immediate dividends. He had the pretty setup to Bedard near the end of the first period. Burakovsky also had the second assist on Donato’s goal in the third.

  • How about an empty net, short-handed goal from Frank Nazar — with 7:16 left in regulation. Nazar had an assist on Bedard’s power play goal in the first period as well.

  • The Blackhawks had a 25-11 Corsi For advantage at 5-on-5 after 20 minutes. And they won 10 of 18 faceoffs in the first period (56 percent). Nazar won 4 of 8 and Jason Dickinson won 3 of 6 to lead the way at the dot.
  • Why was the second period a disaster? The Senators had a 19-9 Corsi For advantage at 5-on-5 in the second period. And Ottawa won 15 of 18 faceoffs in the middle stanza.
  • The third period in this game was the opposite of the game against the Kings. The Senators tried to get physical, the Blackhawks pushed back. And the Blackhawks scored when they had good looks at the net — which is the most important part. It’s good they finished this one.
  • Artyom Levshunov picked up an assist on Bedard’s second goal of the night, which is a nice present for his 20th birthday (which is Oct. 28).
  • The Blackhawks challenged Ottawa’s third goal. It appeared to be offside, but the league decided it wasn’t. Here’s their explanation for those who want that.

  • With the second assist on Dach’s goal in the first period, Nick Foligno recorded the 600th points of his NHL career.

You Can Scratch Another Star Off the Potential 2026 Free Agent List

We keep talking about how limited the options are for teams to make significant improvement via free agency. One name many Blackhawks fans have liked for a couple years — including me — is now off the market for the 2026 shopping season.

On Thursday, the Colorado Avalance signed forward Martin Nečas to a blockbuster contract. The deal is reportedly an eight-year, $92M extension ($11.5M AAV).

Nečas, 26 was the centerpiece of the huge, three-team trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to Carolina last year. Rantanen, of course, was later shipped to Dallas — where he signed an eight-year, $96M deal ($12M AAV).

He joins potential 2026 free agents Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Kirill Kaprizov and Kyle Connor in signing extensions with their current teams.

Blackhawks 3, Jets 6 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Winnipeg Jets came into this game 7-3-0 and really hadn’t played their best hockey yet. They’re a well coached, excellent veteran team and it showed tonight. Good teams make you pay for mistakes, and Winnipeg did that all night.

Colton Dach took a quick penalty and the Jets converted, taking a 1-0 lead 102 seconds in. The Blackhawks didn’t score on an early power play of their own, but did start generating chances with their speed. Frankly, the Blackhawks dominated the first period for about 15 minutes, but a terrible pinch by Louis Crevier gave up a 2-on-1 and the Jets scored on their second shot in almost 12 minutes of action.

Less than two minutes into the second period, Mark Scheifele scored what can only be described as a bad goal that Spencer Knight undoubtedly wants back. When Gabe Vilardi scored for a second time at 11:19 into the second period, it felt like the better team was simply imposing its will. The Blackhawks actually had a 14-13 Corsi For advantage at 5-on-5 in the second period but the Jets scored the only two goals in the period.

Chasing three goals on the road against a good team is hard. When the Blackhawks announced Jason Dickinson would not return for the third period — leaving them with 10 available forwards — the climb became harder. Especially when Connor Hellebuyck is on his game. When Josh Morrissey rifled a shot off the post that ricocheted off Knight’s leg and into the net, you knew it really just wasn’t the Hawks’ night. But they never quit, and scored twice in a span of 2:01 in the third to make it interesting.

Star 1: André Burakovsky

In a game that wasn’t great overall for the Blackhawks, this highlight reel goal will stand out for the Blackhawks. It got Chicago within two late in the game. Wow!

GOAL: Andre Burakovsky HIGHLIGHT REEL GOAL to get the Blackhawks within two pic.twitter.com/kmo3auOXMm

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 31, 2025

Star 2: Frank Nazar

Nazar won the game’s opening faceoff against… Jonathan Toews. Toews spent the majority of his time against Nazar’s line in the game. In 4:31 against Toews at 5-on-5 before the end of the second period, Nazar’s line had a 5-1 Corsi For advantage. Individually, Nazar was credited with 5 of the Blackhawks’ 14 shots on goal in the first two periods. When the final horn sounded, Nazar had taken a team-leading 23 of 53 total faceoffs in the game. He won nine of them and skated 21:24 in the game. No other Blackhawks skater took more than nine faceoffs.

Star 3: Ryan Greene

Greene was noticeable all over the ice tonight. He skated 12:39 in the first two periods and won half of his six faceoffs with one shot on net. His work on the second power play unit was solid and he was around the net a lot, which led to him being tied for the team lead with two high danger chances before the end of the second period. Greene finished the night plus-two and won six of nine faceoffs in 19:24.

Key Takeaways

  • Teuvo Teräväinen was in the right place at the right time when an insane bounce off the boards on a dump-in found him all alone in front of the net for an easy first Blackhawks goal. Hellebuyck had vacated the crease to get the dump-in and the goal was wide open.

  • Alex Vlasic scored the Blackhawks’ second goal of the game.
GOAL: Alex Vlasic picks up his 1st of the season late in the third pic.twitter.com/1BxcYAmlgk

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 31, 2025
  • The Blackhawks power play was not great. Again.
  • Knight has been terrific this season. He had an off night tonight.
  • With the exception of the crazy bounce off the boards in the first period, Hellebuyck was outstanding. That should be expected; he’s the reigning Vezina and Hart winner for a reason.
  • The Blackhawks won 7 of 21 faceoffs as a team in the opening 20 minutes. The Blackhawks won 6 of 16 in the second period (13 of 37 total — 35 percent). The Blackhawks won 10 of 16 in the third period to finish at 43 percent in the game.
  • Toews had one assist and won 14 of 20 faceoffs in the game.
  • Gustav Nyquist needed help to the room eight minutes into the first period for Winnipeg and did not return to the game.
  • The Connor-Scheifele-Vilardi line dominated the Blackhawks in the first two periods — before Dickinson was ruled out for the third period.

Connor Bedard Just Had His Best Month in the NHL

I don’t think I’m making a bold statement when I say the Chicago Blackhawks exceeded expectations in October. They finished the month with a 5-4-2 record and in percentage points behind the Edmonton Oilers — who they’ll play on Saturday night — for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.

Connor Bedard has led the way. His improvement all over the ice has been noticeable from the first game, and the numbers he’s put up with a full calendar month of Blackhawks games in the books is impressive.

Indeed, Bedard just had the best calendar month of his NHL career.

In his two-plus seasons in the NHL, Bedard has now had five months in which he’s been at least a point-per-game player in at least 10 games. Here are Bedard’s best months by point production:

  • March 2024 (rookie) — 14 games, 4 goals, 13 assists, 17 points (1.21 pt/gm), -10
  • December 2023 (rookie) — 15 games, 5 goals, 10 assists, 15 points (1.00 pt/gm), -5
  • November 2023 (rookie) — 12 games, 6 goals, 6 assists, 12 points (1.00 pt/gm), -9
  • December 2024 — 15 games, 6 goals, 10 assists, 16 points (1.07 pt/gm), -13
  • October 2025 — 11 games, 6 goals, 8 assists, 14 points (1.27 pt/gm), +5

A couple thoughts on those numbers in a vacuum. First, Bedard was a point-per-game player (11 points in 11 games) at even strength. In his first two seasons at 5-on-5, Bedard produced 34 points in 68 games as a rookie and 35 points in 82 games last year. Bedard had 10 points at 5-on-5 in the first 11 games of the season. That’s huge.

Also, while I regularly discount plus-minus as a significant stat in macro conversations, the fact that Bedard was plus-five in the month while producing at the level he did was both impressive and important. Plus-minus is a stat largely depends on the entire group of players on the ice; Bedard has been better, but the other Blackhawks on the ice with him have been as well.

A testament to having better skaters around him: Bedard had four primary assists at 5-on-5 in October. Last year, Bedard had 21 primary assists in 82 games. He had 12 in 68 games as a rookie.

What about Bedard’s new speed?

When I wrote about Bedard’s “new” wheels back in early October, the dissenting voices in the comments were quick to (rightfully) point out the small sample size. Well, now we’re a full month into the regular season. So let’s revisit that discussion with 11 games on the resume.

From NHL Edge, here are the speed report cards for Bedard’s first two full seasons in the NHL and the first month of the 2025-26 season:

image-49.png

Thru 11 games to start the 2025-26 season, Bedard is in the:

  • 92nd percentile in 22+ mph bursts
    — already more than he had in his entire career before this season
  • 97th percentile in 20-22 mph bursts
    — well on pace to be his best season by a wide margin
  • 98th percentile in 18-20 mph bursts
    — an improvement from his previous two seasons

Not only is Bedard’s top speed near/at the best of his career, but he’s consistently playing with better pace (Joel Quenneville’s favorite word). The work he put in over the summer to be a better skater is clearly paying early dividends.

Bedard’s other improvements

Faceoffs

I know there are folks in the comments that like to bark about Bedard’s faceoff percentage on a daily basis. Here are his faceoff percentages at 5-on-5 from his first two seasons and thru October this year:

  • 2023-24: 38.78
  • 2024-25: 38.10
  • 2025-26: 41.56

Great? Not yet. But a significant improvement.

On-Ice Rates

From Natural Stat Trick, here are Bedard’s macro on-ice numbers at 5-on-5 for his first two seasons and thru October:

image-51.png

Thru October, Bedard is on pace for career bests in:

  • Corsi For %
  • Fenwick For %
  • Shots For %
  • Goals For %
  • Scoring Chances For %

And he’s less than one percent behind his expected Goals For percentage best from his rookie season. All of these areas of improvement are impressive.

But the biggest up arrow on the sheet is the Goals For percentage at 5-on-5. He’s up to 60 percent — almost a 17 percent improvement from last year. That’s an enormous improvement that’s, again, both a testament to Bedard’s individual improvement and the quality of his teammates.

2026 NHL Mock Draft: November Update

We’re now almost one full month into the NHL season, and the standings are… not what we expected when the season began. Some young teams are exceeding expectations and some older teams (cough, Calgary, cough) are a hot mess. So it’s a good time to take another run at a 2026 NHL Mock Draft!

As we get further into the season, my mock drafts will get into more detailed analysis. But we now have regular season stats to consider from players all over the world whose names could be called in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft. With that in mind, I’m including links to the EliteProspects profiles for each player in this mock draft so you can see where they’re playing and how they’re producing.

  • Note I: for the order of selections in this mock draft, I am using the NHL standings thru games played on Thursday, Oct. 30.
  • Note II: the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft will only consist of 31 picks. Ottawa has forfeited their pick because of the Evgenii Dadonov trade. As such, this mock draft will include 31 selections.
