News Blackhawks Team Notes

Camp Tomorrow, Prospect Rankings, College Hockey, Rangers New Captain, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Earlier this morning, I dropped my pre-training camp updated top 20 Blackhawks prospect rankings. Coincidentally, Cam Robinson and the crew at Elite Prospects released their rankings of the Blackhawks’ prospects on Tuesday as well. They have the Blackhawks’ pipeline ranked fifth in the NHL. Here’s their top ten in the Blackhawks’ system (they ranked 27, and these are the positions they assigned to the players):

  1. Artyom Levhunov, RHD
  2. Sam Rinzel, RHD
  3. Anton Frondell, C
  4. Oliver Moore, LW
  5. Sacha Boisvert, RW
  6. Václav Nestrašil, RW
  7. Nick Lardis, RW
  8. Ethan Del Mastro, LHD
  9. Colton Dach, C/LW
  10. Nathan Behm, LW/RW

A couple thoughts here: they didn’t include Frank Nazar, Landon Slaggert, Kevin Korchinski, Wyatt Kaiser or Nolan Allan. So take that with a grain of salt. I’m also interested that they list Boisvert as a winger and not at center. Finally, here’s some of what they wrote about Lardis, who finally gets a little love as a top-ten prospect in the Blackhawks’ pipeline:

“Lardis isn’t just a scorer, having steadily become more of a passer and transition driver. Like Robertson before him, he might have strong enough elements outside of his shot and speed to earn a top power play and scoring role. So, continuing to develop his contact skills, defence, and, in particular, vary his scoring threat are keys to becoming a 30-goal scorer in the NHL.”

  • Laurent Brossoit is still listed as “injured” on the initial roster for the Blackhawks’ training camp.
  • Wyatt Kaiser is listed on the Blackhawks’ roster for training camp — but with a no-contract designation. So there’s still hope for a deal to get done at some point before the regular season begins.
  • A fun comment here from Cam Robinson about the 2026 NHL Draft class. It’s a good one. Which is nice when you remember the Blackhawks have two picks in the first round.

DONE DEAL: Blackhawks Sign Defenseman Wyatt Kaiser

With the Blackhawks opening training camp on Thursday morning, something had to give. It finally did — Wyatt Kaiser got his new contract.

The Blackhawks announced a two-year deal for Kaiser with a $1.7M AAV on Wednesday night.

A two-year deal is likely not quite what Kaiser’s camp was hoping for, but he will now get his chance to prove to the Blackhawks that he can be a middle-pair defenseman. He took big steps forward with his game last year after missing the start of camp because of illness.

With Kaiser signed, the Blackhawks’ crowded blue line competition for NHL ice time should be intense in training camp.

Jason Dickinson Ready to Help the Blackhawks Create Opportunities, Winning Ways

I have always appreciated and respected how thoughtful Blackhawks center Jason Dickinson‘s perspective is about a wide range of topics. We’ve talked about everything from effort in practice to penalty kill style to approaches in the faceoff circle and having young kids. (Which, by the way, congrats to the Dickinsons for adding a beautiful baby to their family this summer.)

So when the Blackhawks opened a new year on Thursday with a new head coach, a very different (read: younger) roster, I chatted with him about his early perspectives where things are and where they’re headed.

The good news: Dickinson is healthy and feels great starting camp. After having the best offensive season of his career and earning votes for the Selke Trophy votes, Dickinson was limited to 59 games last year. His absence was painfully apparent in the Blackhawks’ bottom six in the second half of the season; having him back on the ice will be important this year both from an on-ice production standpoint and because of his leadership role.

Opportunity Knocks

Last year, Ilya Mikheyev — another player the Blackhawks seemingly stole from the Canucks in a salary dump trade — followed Dickinson’s lead and had a really nice bounce-back season after injuries left his time in Vancouver underwhelming. This year, the Blackhawks are hoping André Burakovsky can be the next in the line of “salary dump” reclamation projects who take advantage of an opportunity in Chicago.

Dickinson likes what Burakovsky can bring to the current situation in the Blackhawks’ room and on the ice.

“I had a tough year in Vancouver and I was given a shot here and it worked for me,” he said. “The beauty of a rebuild is it gives opportunities not only to young guys to make the team and show what they can do, but also veterans get a chance to refresh and get back to what they once were with, I don’t want to say lower expectations, but without the pressure of where you were and what they wanted from you and who you were ‘supposed’ to be.

You come to a new team in the middle of a rebuild and maybe we’re not asking Burkie to put up 70 points a year like Seattle would’ve been hoping for. We’re asking him to come in and set a standard and create a culture. The points will come, but primarily your job is be the guy that won a Cup in Colorado and Washington. Bring that standard here and help show the guys what it took to win those Cups and be a winning player. And he did it young in his career, so he can relate to all these guys in that age bracket to be like, ‘I was there in the biggest moment at your age.'”

Take this for whatever it’s worth because today was the first day of camp, but the Blackhawks had Burakovsky on a line with Ryan Donato and Connor Bedard on Thursday. If those three get some run together and it works, we could see a really nice bounce-back campaign from the guy Seattle needed to dump this summer.

A New Day

We’ve talked a lot about the Blackhawks “working to establish the right culture” over the past three years, so I know going there again might feel a bit cliché to some in our midst. But this year’s camp is unique: there’s a new head coach and a collection of young players beginning their professional careers together at the same time. Some young players, like Bedard, Frank Nazar and Landon Slaggert, might have a year or two of professional hockey under their belts, but the volume of new players on the ice who are staying pro this year is significant for the organization.

I asked Dickinson about how different the start of this year’s camp is to the previous training camps he’s attended with the Blackhawks. This will be Dickinson’s fourth season with the Blackhawks, but he wasn’t here for the start of training camp his first season; the Blackhawks acquired him from Vancouver on Oct. 7, 2022.

Dickinson said he didn’t want to try to compare any coaches’ styles or approaches and didn’t want to go back over past players, teammates and roster makeups. But his first impressions from new Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill are that he’s going to work as hard as he’s asking the players to work this year.

“One thing I’ve noticed with Blash is he is extremely intense and he expects us to match his intensity. And he’s extremely detailed and expects us to match his detail,” Dickinson said Thursday. “So, what he brings to the table, he expects nothing less [from the players]. It doesn’t seem like he’s going to ask us to do something that he’s not willing to do himself, and he’s pushing us extremely hard. His expectations for us are high — but that’s because his expectations for himself are just as high.”

Both Dickinson and Blashill talked about how critical it is for young players to start their professional journeys with the right, winning habits. That was a point of emphasis with the structure in Blashill’s first day as the Blackhawks head coach. And it’s going to continue to be something they focus on moving forward.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno said it was an intense practice — more than many of the first days he’s experienced during his career. Dickinson and Foligno both talked about how important it is for the youth movement to learn to play the game the right way at the NHL level, and their new head coach echoed those statements after two long practices.

Dickinson said Blashill working to set the bar right away is only going to make the players — and the Blackhawks as a team and organization — better.

“The hardest thing is to create a habit or break a habit,” he said. “So if [Blashill] can create habits from day one for them in the NHL, their career is going to benefit. This organization is going to benefit. Everybody that gets to play with those guys is going to benefit. It’s a trickle down effect of — it’s so cliché, but it is the only term that works — the culture. Creating that culture that there are no freebies; there’s no other way to do it. The expectation is this, and if you don’t meet it, then move on. There’s no time for it. There’s no time for holding hands because we’re grown men and this is a business and a hard league to stick in. And if he sets that standard, then it’s going to be a high standard and it’s expected from every single one of us, no matter who you are and how long you’ve been here.”

The Blackhawks are embarking on a new season, the likes of which we haven’t seen in nearly two decades. The youth movement is finally starting to arrive. Blashill is now charged with creating the culture that changes course for the franchise from losing with purpose to winning with speed.

And the good news for Blashill as the new head coach is he has veterans like Dickinson in the room that are buying in and have the same expectations. The legacy for the players in the room like Dickinson and Foligno will be how the new culture of the Chicago Blackhawks turns years of finishing at or near the bottom of the standings into sustained winning at the highest level.

Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson Talks: Big Picture, Injuries, Kaiser, Knight, Reichel, Korchinski, More

As the Blackhawks open training camp on Thursday morning, Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson addressed the media. We talked about a wide range of topics, which is always the case when the season begins.

Here’s what he shared with us in a few easy-to-consume buckets:

Injuries (already)

  • Laurent Brossoit had offseason hip surgery and will be out long term. At this point, he’s a ghost; he’s never joined the Blackhawks for a full skate since signing last July because of a series of injuries and setbacks. Davidson did say Brossoit wants to play again. I’m guessing that won’t be with the Blackhawks, however.
  • AJ Spellacy suffered a shoulder injury during the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase and will be out of action for 7-10 days.
  • Jack Pridham has an infection and is day-to-day.
  • Ty Henry, who took an awful spill during the first practice before the showcase last week, is having knee surgery this week.

Big Picture

Davidson is still expecting there to be improvement from the Blackhawks, but there will be more patience this year than he had with a veteran roster that started last season poorly.

“I think the composition of our team is just so different from last year,” Davidson said Thursday. “Honestly, my expectation was that we would’ve performed better than we did, especially out of the gate, last year. We had a veteran-laden team. We were one of the more veteran teams in NHL — which was by design — which led us to believe that we would be a little bit further ahead in last year’s standings than we were. We made mid-season changes because of the results. …

Now that we’ve seen this influx of young talent at the end of the season and coming in [now], there will be a patience factor with young players in the NHL. But there’s also an excitement factor and a future impact that we should see throughout this season from some players that will be here for a very, very long time.”

Specific Players

  • On getting Wyatt Kaiser‘s deal done in time for camp:
“Happy to have Wyatt under contract. I think he’s going to be a big part of our team this year and [we’re] looking forward to him continuing to establish himself in the NHL and grow his game.”
  • On Spencer Knight‘s extension:
“We traded for Spencer for a reason and he was a big part of a very big deal for us. Part of that is because we believe in his potential to be a top flight starter in this league. I think getting him under contract for the next couple of years gives him and us some runway to further establish ourselves, put him in a position to be the number one guy and give him some runway in that role and we can … revisit things in a couple of years and make sure he is here for a really long time.”
  • The organization’s view of Lukas Reichel:
“I think it’s a little bit of a prove it camp for Lukas. It’s been an up and down couple years for him, but we still see Lukas as an extremely talented, high-upside player that has just as good a shot as anyone of breaking camp with this team. But he’s got to earn it just like everyone else and he’s got to find that niche. Where are you going to find yourself? Where are you going to line up in the roster? And that’s up to him to perform in camp and then coaches to deliver feedback and have that give and take to make sure that he’s got all the information necessary to make this team. … It’s not that different from any other player, but he has some history here that has had some highs and some lows and so hopefully with the new coaching staff and new year, it’s a fresh start for him to reestablish himself.”
  • On Kevin Korchinski‘s development:
“I think Kevin took a really nice step in the second half last year. I thought he had a nice playoffs for Rockford as well and I’d like to see him continue that. Again, he’s got an opportunity to make this team, but he’s still very young and if he doesn’t then Rockford’s a great option. He’s still very young. We’ve known [his] name and he’s been on the scene [for a while]. He started early, but there’s still a growth for all young players to undergo to make sure they stick and are impact players in the NHL.

And I think, with a player like Kevin, confidence and that willingness to go out and make plays is going to be a very big part of his success in pro hockey in the NHL. And so we want to make sure that that’s there, want to make sure that he’s doing everything he can to play to his strengths. He’s still very much in the developmental stage of his career and so if he shows that he’s ready for the NHL, then he’ll be here. If there’s some things that we feel he needs to work on and continue to grow and play really big minutes and in every situation, then Rockford’s available to us.”

Blackhawks Day Two Training Camp Takeaways: Bag Skate, Moore’s Shot, Attention to Details

The Blackhawks rolled out for the second day of training camp on Friday. It was another day of practices that were run hard and precise. Here are a few takeaways from the two skates.

  • We’ll start at the end. Head coach Jeff Blashill skated the **** out of the guys on Friday. After a full hour on the ice working on hockey, the entire groups went to the second sheet for conditioning. The guys were gassed. Thankfully by the time we got in the room they were able to joke about how much it hurt but… yeah, there were a few guys that probably didn’t sprint to lunch.
Conditioning drills. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/EUn1G8Zi55

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) September 19, 2025
  • Since before Luke Richardson was named the Blackhawks’ head coach, if you came to a training camp practice there were times during drills that a puck bounced over a stick or a pass wasn’t on the mark and someone on the side would just throw a puck out into the middle of the drill so the group/line in action could finish the rep. That isn’t happening in this camp. Blashill is stopping everything and making the players get every element of the rep right.
  • “Team 2” was on the primary ice working first on Friday morning. Frank Nazar and Nick Lardis were spending a fair amount of time together during drills; they weren’t together when the Blackhawks were taking full line rushes. The lines were the same as Thursday. There looked to be some nice chemistry between Nazar and Lardis. Maybe that could be a thing soon.
Nazar + Lardis #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/v3y6vOyulG

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 19, 2025
  • There were a couple times that I heard Blashill getting on Artyom Levshunov over something seemingly not huge, like which top corner of the net to shoot at in a specific drill. That’s not a shot at Levshunov doing anything wrong necessarily — and he wasn’t the only one who got this from the head coach — but the attention to small details has been noticeable not only in completing drills correctly, but making the right choice with a shot location or when to defer vs. when to shoot in a 2-on-1.
  • The second group had two things that were notably the same as Thursday: Sam Rinzel and Ethan Del Mastro spent a lot of time together as a defensive pair, and Connor Bedard skated between Ryan Donato and André Burakovsky again.
  • If finishing was an area where Oliver Moore needed to improve to solidify his chances of being an impactful top-six forward in the NHL, the early returns have been very positive. After closing out his one game in the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase with the OT GWG, he’s shown some really nice hands around the net and a sneaky release. I’ve been impressed with his shot so far.

Landon Slaggert A “Perfect Fit” On New-Look Blackhawks

As Blackhawks fans sit back and over-analyze who’s skating with Connor Bedard and how a lot of the other young players look in camp, one younger player who’s flying under the radar is forward Landon Slaggert. But he might be in the perfect place at the perfect time.

Slaggert, 23, appeared in 33 games with the Blackhawks last year after making his pro debut for a 16-game stint at the end of the 2023-24 campaign following a successful senior season at Notre Dame. The Blackhawks’ front office saw enough from him in that brief intro to pro hockey that they handed him a two-year extension already last October.

He’s a coach’s son who plays the game the way you’d expect with an older brother playing pro hockey and a father who’s been a coach in South Bend for a long time; new Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill told us on Friday that Andy Slaggert actually recruited him as a player back in the day.

After skating thru his first NHL training camp last year and starting the regular season in Rockford, Slaggert feels a lot more comfortable and settled this year in camp. He told me at the end of last year that he learned a lot about what he needs to do to be ready for a full, 82-game NHL season. He spent his summer working on winning board battles, attacking pucks in corners and his skating.

Landon Slaggert Chicago Blackhawks

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

Thru the first two days of Blackhawks training camp, Slaggert has been skating on a line with Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev. After Friday’s skate, Blashill spoke highly of both Dickinson and Slaggert. He sees Dickinson as a workhorse who can be a really effective third-line center who makes life hell for opposing teams’ top lines. Dickinson was terrific at that when he was healthy the past two seasons in Chicago.

I asked Blashill about how he sees Slaggert in the lineup and he confirmed that he’ll get a long look in that checking-line role. The new Blackhawks head coach said he likes how Slaggert is a “dog on a bone” attacking the puck with speed.

Slaggert used the same phrase to describe his game. He’s excited because he believes his style of play fits perfectly in the new systems the Blackhawks coaches are beginning to install in camp. Play fast, attack pucks, flip the ice and work hard. Those are all of the things that made Slaggert a captain as a senior at Notre Dame, and elements of his game that have shown early in his NHL career.

Blashill believes Slaggert can be a piece on this roster. Slaggert loves where the roster is going and how he can be an impact player for the Blackhawks moving forward. As a guy who’s played a number roles with the Fighting Irish and USA hockey during his journey to the NHL, this could be a strong season for Slaggert to show he belongs in the league.

Camp Continues, Grzelcyk’s Options, Draft Prospects, Dahlin’s Scary Summer, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks had a tough practice yesterday working on breakouts and transitions. Then they got a nice bag skate on a fresh sheet of ice, a sprint that had a lot of the skaters grabbing their knees and looking to the sky. When we got in the room after the first and second half of practices, the skaters were feeling it. We’ll see how their legs feel with a couple practice sessions today — which, again, are open to the public.

Alex Vlasic was definitely questioning his life choices in the room after the conditioning skate #Blackhawks coaches put them thru one today… lots of gassed skaters after each practice

— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) September 19, 2025
  • André Burakovsky‘s wheels look good so far in camp. And I like the way he fits the new identity of the Blackhawks coaches. When I projected a potential opening night lineup for the Blackhawks less than one week after free agency opened, I had him penciled in on the wing of Connor Bedard‘s top line. That’s where the coaches are skating him now. I had Teuvo Teräväinen on that line; the Blackhawks have been skating Ryan Donato there. Either way, this is a terrific situation for both Bedard and Burakovsky to see their games elevate to another level this year.
  • You know what’s fun? Today is Day Three of training camp — and the Blackhawks are three days away from their first preseason game in Detroit.
  • The good folks at Elite Prospects ranked the top prospects heading into their pre-draft seasons. This is a good one to bookmark for Blackhawks fans; Chicago owns two picks in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft.

  • Veteran defenseman Matt Grzelcyk in in camp with the Blackhawks on a PTO right now, which was a surprise to a lot of people — including Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill. Blashill told us on Friday he was surprised a player who performed as well as Grzelcyk did in Pittsburgh last year was still available at the beginning of camp. With Wyatt Kaiser getting his new contract done in time for camp, the need for an insurance policy on the left side of the blue line isn’t as big. And there are reportedly still a line of potentially interested parties if the Blackhawks don’t retain Grzelcyk into the regular season.
Per @TheAthleticNHL @PierreVLeBrun, the #Isles are one of the teams to monitor when it comes to UFA LHD Matt Grzelcyk.

Why bringing in the veteran defenseman would make a ton of sense @thehockeynewshttps://t.co/CrZ2fGVME4

Sam Rinzel, Ethan Del Mastro Developing Chemistry on the Blackhawks’ Blue Line

One of the somewhat surprising roster looks early in the Blackhawks’ training camp has been on the blue line, where Sam Rinzel has been skating almost exclusively with Ethan Del Mastro thus far.

Rinzel is an excellent skater and brings a lot of offensive ability into his first full professional season. After a season in the USHL and two at the University of Minnesota, one of the Blackhawks’ first-round picks in 2022 has been turning heads since he arrived in the NHL at the end of last year. Because he was playing college hockey, this is his first professional training camp. Couple that with a new coaching staff, and there’s a lot to learn.

“Sometimes I’ll get caught up in trying to do the drill right and then I’ll miss just playing hockey,” Rinzel said. “But it’s hard, right? Drills are set up to fail and also set up to learn. So it’s good to push yourself that way. … [I need to] just kind of go out and play on instincts. I’m confident in myself and I learn from the older guys.”

Del Mastro, on the other hand, was a fourth-round pick by the Blackhawks back in 2021. He spent a couple seasons in the OHL — including being the captain for Mississauga — after being drafted before joining the professional ranks. Over the past two years, Del Mastro has appeared in 26 games in the NHL and 116 in the AHL with Rockford. This is his third training camp since turning pro and fifth hockey season since being drafted. But he told me you cannot replicate NHL experience.

“I think you just feel a lot more confident in yourself and your game and then just where you are, stacking that up against actual NHL players,” Del Mastro said Saturday. “It’s kind of tough when you don’t play too many games and you don’t really know too much what to expect going into the season. But I think once you’re able to get a couple games in your belt, you kind of settle down and know what it’s going to be like and know what they’re expecting and I think that makes it a lot easier coming into a fresh season.”

The Blackhawks have a unique situation right now where they have a group of young defensemen from three consecutive draft classes showing they’re close to — if not already — ready for the NHL at the same time. Some coming from juniors, some from college, and all with varying degrees of time spent in the AHL to show they’re fully ready for prime time.

That range of experience — or lack thereof — is something that’s going to continue to be talked about with this year’s Blackhawks team, especially on the blue line. Prospects coming out of juniors can have more professional training camp experience than college players, who can’t attend pro training camps because they’re already on campus. Quickly getting comfortable with and against NHL players is the key.

Getting to know each other

Rinzel and Del Mastro skating together makes a lot of sense, even if most onlookers have Rinzel penciled in on the Blackhawks’ top defensive pair with Alex Vlasic once the season starts. Not only do they both have a gold medal at home from the World Junior Championships, but their styles of play should complement each other well.

“Obviously he’s a big guy, he’s a physical guy,” Rinzel said of Del Mastro. “He likes to kind of shut things down early as well. He complements me well. I like to get in the rush and play offense, but I want that two-way game as well. Learning things from him is important for me. Even just watching him on defensive side is good with as long as his reach is and how that helps him out. Deli’s been great. I think we work well together.”

Del Mastro has enjoyed working with Rinzel as well.

“We’re starting training camp together for now and I’ve enjoyed that and hopefully that can be a place that I can play with him for a while,” Del Mastro said. “It’s been great so far and I think we really work well off each other. It’s good that we’re both young and close in age and we’re able to chat off the ice and on the ice, so it’s been great so far.”

Thru three days of camp, the Blackhawks have primarily had Vlasic skating with Connor Murphy and Wyatt Kaiser with Artyom Levshunov. Kevin Korchinski has been skating with Nolan Allan (on his off-side). All four of those defensive pairs has a chance to stick, whether it’s in Chicago or Rockford.

After Saturday’s practice, head coach Jeff Blashill said the Blackhawks are going to start camp with these pairs and see where things go. He did mention that Vlasic and Rinzel spent a lot of time together last year (it felt like that’s where this will go eventually) but, at least for now, we’ll see some of Del Mastro and Rinzel together.

Even though there’s strong competition with a lot of young guys battling for roster spots, Del Mastro told me they’re all working together to make each other — and the Blackhawks — better.

“We’re all young but I think we’re all in the mindset that we want to play and we want to be able to do this together, which is a great thing,” Del Mastro said. “None of us are hoping one of the other guys fails. We’re all working together and trying to make sure each other is better. Iron sharpens iron. We have a lot of guys fighting for spots and I think that makes all of us better and makes all of us closer.”

Fourth Line Looks, Thompson’s Compete, Crevier’s Start, Reichel? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Over the past couple days I’ve written about a two guys who appear to be locked into roles on the Blackhawks’ third line to start the season: Jason Dickinson and Landon Slaggert. That makes a lot of sense, but it then leaves the door wide open to which young players are going to fill in roles elsewhere. During the second practice on Saturday, I paid a little attention to what might be your fourth line to start the year: Colton DachSam LaffertyNick Foligno.

There’s some tenacity in this trio that could make it a fun fourth line to watch this season. And I like the situation for Dach to get some valuable experience with two guys who play the game in a way he could/should emulate. Ben Pope wrote a good piece about what Lafferty brings (back) to the table in his second run in Chicago with the Blackhawks.

Sam Lafferty knows the Blackhawks brought him back for one thing: his speed.

In a grueling drill today, he showed he hasn't lost a step.

  • What’s interesting about what you might consider to be the top four lines of Blackhawks forwards thus far in camp is the omission of Lukas Reichel. He’s been skating exclusively on a line with Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene. That line can absolutely fly, and they’re young. But… two of the three have options to potentially start the season in Rockford. Which begs the question: what’s Reichel’s role to begin the year? And… is it even in Chicago?
  • I will note that, with the new coaches being especially focused on details to start training camp, I have noticed Reichel being corrected more than most. Not necessarily a bad thing automatically, but also not ideal. Especially when there are 12 guys seemingly ahead of you on the (yes, incredibly early) depth chart.
  • Harman Dayal at The Athletic wrote about ten potential breakout candidates in the NHL this season. Frank Nazar is front and center on the list.
The NHL’s top 10 breakout candidates: Leo Carlsson, Frank Nazar, Jet Greaves and more https://t.co/roUr7upmEN

— The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) September 20, 2025
  • You know who’s looked really good in camp thus far? Louis Crevier. He’s been skating incredibly well and looks like a guy who doesn’t want to be forgotten with the younger defensemen — Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov — possibly taking up the top two spots on the right side of the blue line moving forward.
  • In a couple of the drills on Saturday things got physical to the point that it was chippy a few times. Aidan Thompson was right smack in the middle of it again, getting after it with Kevin Korchinski a few times. Blashill said after practice he loves that.
“I think it’s great. [Thompson’s] a guy who probably draws people into the fight. That would be the best way to kind of describe him is, he definitely competes hard, he’s in people’s faces and he draws you into fights, so good for him. he’s been fun to watch.”
  • The Blackhawks shared the rosters for today on Saturday afternoon and André Burakovsky and Connor Murphy won’t skate.
  • Now-officially-former Blackhawks prospect Dominic James signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday morning. James, originally a sixth-round pick by the Hawks in 2022, was the captain at Minnesota-Duluth last year. He’s a terrific skater who can win faceoffs. I wouldn’t be shocked if he found a way into some NHL ice time with Jon Cooper at some point. Good for him!

  • Interesting read here from Anthony DiMarco on Marin Brodeur’s journey to being a powerful member of the Devils’ front office.

Day One Thoughts, Lines and Defensive Pairs, College vs. Junior, LA Retirements, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks started their 2025 training camp with two physical practices. They weren’t “ease back into hockey” skates — they were intentionally hard. Because new head coach Jeff Blashill is working to establish his culture in the organization. Blashill doing things the right way and getting the bar set high with such a young group of players is critical for the team to take a step in the right direction this year.

  • I don’t want anyone writing these things down in Sharpie quite yet because it was Day One of training camp, but we got an early look at some potential lines on the ice on Thursday. Here’s how the first group skated:
#Blackhawks Team 1 lineup:
Donato-Bedard-Burakovsky
Slaggert-Dickinson-Mikheyev
Moore-Greene-Reichel
Vanacker-Ludwinski-Behm
Savoie-Seney

Del Mastro-Rinzel
Vlasic-Murphy
Kuzmin-Harding
Fitzgerald-Mast

Knight
Commesso

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) September 18, 2025
  • On that top line, Blashill said: “[Burakovsky is] really good at bringing pucks up through the neutral zone. I think he can play off Connor. There’s a give-and-go component to his game, so it could be a good match there. Donato is a good scorer.
  • I’m on board with a line of Landon Slaggert, Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev. Lots of speed there, and they’ll be a pain in the ass to play against.
  • Here’s how the second practice looked:
#Blackhawks Team 2 lineup:
Teravainen-Nazar-Bertuzzi
Dach-Foligno-Lafferty
Thompson-Toninato-Lardis
Cates-Hayes-Anderson
Misiak-Holmes

Kaiser-Levshunov
Grzelcyk-Crevier
Korchinski-Allan
Cumby-Perrott

Söderblom
Berezhnoy

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) September 18, 2025
  • The biggest area of competition in camp is on the blue line, where a young group is going to fight over roster spots through camp and likely during the regular season. Here’s what Blashill had to say about what he’s seen from that group thus far:
“It’ll definitely be the youngest D core that I’ve been a part of in the NHL, but it’s a very talented group. Talented in a way that I think translates to success. They’re extremely big, extremely long, extremely good skating. They’re not like a bunch of guys who just beat people 1-on-1. They’re efficient in their games.”
  • It’s noteworthy that the Blackhawks had Ethan Del Mastro skating with Sam Rinzel and Alex Vlasic with Connor Murphy on Thursday. The “automatic” of Vlasic-Rinzel not being Day One was interesting. I’m also fascinated to see Kevin Korchinski with Nolan Allan (Rockford’s top pair to start the season?) while one pair we thought we would see, Wyatt Kaiser with Artyom Levshunov, was on the ice.
  • For those who are wondering about Connor Bedard after seeing all of the clips of his workouts on social media this summer, he looked quick with his feet and releasing the puck. Here’s a nice clip of one of his highlight goals from the practice on Thursday:
Connor Bedard with a Connor Bedard-like goal pic.twitter.com/5hUjru87J3

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) September 18, 2025
  • Corey Pronman at The Athletic dropped his first 2026 NHL Draft rankings this week. Gavin McKenna is No. 1 because of course. He only ranked 18 players (with some honorable mentions) but put them into tiers, which has been the trend from The Athletic recently. Good read.
  • Since we’re on the subject of the draft and current Penn State forward Gavin McKenna, I asked Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson about how the organization views college vs. juniors from a development perspective. He gave a fairly lengthy answer. Here it is:
“There are certainly differences and advantages to each one,” Davidson said Thursday. “There’s a bit of a heavier playing schedule and more games in Junior. There’s more practice time and off ice workout opportunities perhaps in college. And [in college] they’re playing against older, stronger players, which there’s a uniqueness to playing against guys that are closer to being men.

But we don’t prefer one or the other. Every case is situational. And, a lot of times … we take the lead of the player. Where do you think your development is best served? … we want them to have skin in the game. It’s their career, it’s their development. And a lot of times there isn’t a clear best path. So, if they feel college is the best for them, we support that. If they feel that Junior is the best for them, we support that. We don’t push one way or the other. There are benefits to both.”
  • The Blackhawks were able to get a deal done with Kaiser, but it looks like the Ducks and forward Mason McTavish aren’t close to getting something done. McTavish is reportedly skating in Ottawa. Something to keep an eye on for sure.
With training camp on-ice sessions beginning today, Mason McTavish is skating with the OHL’s Ottawa 67s

The contract stalemate continues in Anaheim. It’s believed the Ducks prefer not to do a bridge, but no common ground yet

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) September 18, 2025
  • Matthew Tkachuk isn’t skating yet, but apparently we’ll see if he knows anything about the gridiron this weekend when he’s the celebrity guest picker on College GameDay.

  • The Penguins aren’t going to be very good this year, and they started their training camp with an unfortunate piece of news: forward Rutger McGroarty is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury.
  • Finally, yesterday was a tough day for the sports landscape in Los Angeles. In the matter of a few hours, both Clayton Kershaw and Anze Kopitar announced they will retire at the end of their respective seasons. Kershaw’s season will end at some point between now and the end of the first month of the NHL’s regular season. Kopitar will take a victory lap — and he deserves his flowers. He’s been one of the best, more under-appreciated centers in the game for a long time. Much respect.

META: Bears Podcast Coming, Comment Section Moderator Wanted

Hey, first and most importantly, I want to inform and remind you that the BN Bears Podcast is officially launching today, thanks to support from our sponsors at Obvious Shirts!

We’ll have an article up when the first episode goes live, but you can subscribe right now on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or keep an eye out for the next episode/video on the Bleacher Nation YouTube channel.

We hope you like it!

Now for the less fun conversation … The comment section has been an absolute disaster lately, and honestly, I’m not going to waste my breath asking you guys to be better. I just ran through the moderation back-end and started aggressively banning people and deleting comments. And now, I’m going to ask for a couple of you guys to become moderators (and you can bet they’ll be more aggressive than I have been).

I’ve already had one long-time user volunteer, but I’m looking for 1-2 more people to step up. So let me know if you’re interested by dropping a comment down below. And then we’ll take it from there.

Sucks that it has to go this way, but the trolls and awful people are ruining it for everyone else.

Blackhawks Training Camp Notes: Special Teams, Scrimmage Takeaways

The Blackhawks had a long practice on Monday, working on their new special teams systems for almost an hour before a scrimmage that included two, 20-minute periods and a few 75-second special teams breaks.

Blackhawks special teams work

While working on the power play, we got to see a little of what the Blackhawks will be trying to build as the season progresses. Bedard looked good, and I’m with Ben Pope on this one. His speed entering the zone was noticeable.

This play by Connor Bedard caught my eye. It would be huge if he’s able to be this effective on solo entries in actual games this season: pic.twitter.com/so03NB2935

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 22, 2025

Part of him being able to enter the zone clean will be dependent on the skill players around him on the top unit. Sam Rinzel was on the top unit and looks ready-made to run the show from the point. On the top unit, Rinzel and Bedard were joined by Nazar, Teräväinen and Bertuzzi (who was in front of the net).

On the penalty kill, Blashill talked after practice about how they’re going to be more aggressive on the puck this year. The options he has to employ speed on the PK could not only flip the ice, but turn a short-handed situation into scoring opportunities. When you think about Nazar, Oliver Moore, Ilya Mikheyev, Jason Dickinson, Ryan Greene and Sam Lafferty as some of the options on the kill, there’s a lot to love with the potential for shorties this coming season. And the coaches are going to encourage that early and often.

Dickinson has looked really good in practices thus far. He’s so good with his stick; he’s been taking the puck away at will. If he can bounce back from an injury-plagued season to be closer to the guy who got Selke votes, that would be a huge help to the Blackhawks overall.

Scrimmage notes

The forward lines the Blackhawks skated in the scrimmage were… interesting. The only one that stuck from what we’ve seen thru the first few days of camp was Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teräväinen and Frank Nazar.

There was some buzz on social media when Lukas Reichel found himself on the wing of Connor Bedard; Reichel’s fans were excited for the opportunity. Pause button. After the skate, head coach Jeff Blashill said everything was by design because they were trying to balance the power plays and penalty kills. Reichel isn’t staying there.

I will also note that Landon Slaggert and Brett Seney weren’t available Monday and are considered day-to-day. Also, Samuel Savoie left the scrimmage during the second period and André Burakovsky was a limited participant in practice after not skating on Sunday.

Blackhawks at Red Wings — Preseason Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Let there be (preseason) hockey! The Blackhawks players are excited to get on a plane and go hit someone who isn’t family for the first time this fall, and their first run will be in Detroit against the Red Wings. Somewhat surprisingly, the Wings aren’t going to field many bona fide NHL players tonight on their home ice. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, will have their top two centers in the lineup and some interesting guys who are battling for roster spots.

Let the games begin!

What to Watch For

  • Reichel gets a chance to show what he can do with Bedard on the top line. Could be an important night for him to show off to help his future in Chicago (or elsewhere).
  • Greene getting some run with Lafferty and Anderson is a nice preseason checking line. Greene has good wheels and has a little more offense than I think people give him credit.

Blackhawks 2, Red Wings 3 — Preseason Takeaways

The Blackhawks sent a young roster to Detroit on Tuesday night for the first preseason game of the year. With a new coaching staff, new systems and five tough days of practice in the books, it was time to put the practices to the side and hit somebody in another jersey.

It’s the preseason, and with as many young players as the Blackhawks sent to this game let’s focus on takeaways from the performance.

First Period: 1-0 Detroit

  • Connor Bedard‘s jump was noticeable the entire period. He also won 4 of 5 at the dot in 5:44 of ice time.
  • Colton Dach missed a stretch pass from Artyom Levshunov and then got called for a slash. The Red Wings scored on the power play.
  • When you change special teams systems, there will be issues early. When you play young players, there will be issues. The Blackhawks left too much space in front of the net on the first power play and got burned — albeit by a really good pass.
A power play goal from Carter Mazur gives the Detroit Red Wings the 1-0 lead over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Emmitt Finnie with a beautiful backwards pass to Mazur through the legs of Sam Rinzel. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. #gogrg #lgrw @GracedByRainPod pic.twitter.com/LH4YQ5fruk

— Elaine Shircliff (@imaraindancer) September 23, 2025
  • Levshunov took a penalty late in the period to put the Blackhawks short-handed again.
  • The line of Oliver Moore, Frank Nazar and Aidan Thompson was absolutely flying. Thompson saved an icing early. Their speed really stood out. They needed to shoot the puck more, though. Too many pass attempts when there could have been pucks on net.
  • The Blackhawks sent Moore and Nazar out together for the first short-handed shift. I love that speed combination.
  • Ethan Del Mastro was credited with two hits in a team-leading 10:03 in the first period. Sam Rinzel skated 8:28 in the first. They looked good together.
  • Wyatt Kaiser got hit hard a couple times early but bounced back easily.

Second Period: 2-1 Detroit

  • The Blackhawks got a power play early in the period and made it count quickly. Nazar won the faceoff and then Rinzel and Bedard played catch until Bedard unloaded for his first goal of the preseason.
Power play goal for the #Blackhawks!!

pic.twitter.com/M1cSBGW5Ci

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 24, 2025
  • Detroit took the lead back 100 seconds after the Bedard goal, but the Blackhawks got another power play soon after the goal. There was too much traffic in front of Arvid Söderblom on the second goal.
  • Söderblom made a few really nice saves in the second period, including this one:
Arvid with a huge save on a backdoor chance for Ian Mitchell pic.twitter.com/MNNDYQO2ve

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) September 24, 2025
  • Late in the period the Blackhawks sent out Nazar, Bedard and Moore (with Nazar taking the faceoff).
  • I thought Kevin Korchinski got off to a quiet start but looked better in the second period. He made a few nice plays to take the puck away and skated out of trouble as well. He was paired with Louis Crevier most of the night.
  • The Blackhawks took two penalties in the first period and two more in the second. Levshunov went to the box with 80 seconds left in the first; Thompson went off with 39 seconds remaining in the second. Penalties late in periods can’t happen. That’s way too much time in the box in the first 40 minutes.
  • Söderblom stopped 27 of 29 thru two periods. He was the only reason the Blackhawks were within one.
  • Bedard won 6 of 7 faceoffs in the first period. Nazar won 6 of a team-high 11 draws.
  • Your ice time leaders thru two periods: Rinzel (15:58), Del Mastro (15:57) and Levshunov (14:07). Bedard (12:40) led all Blackhawks forwards.

Third Period: 3-2 Detroit

  • Kaiser tied the game a little more than six minutes into the third period. The assists: Thompson and Levshunov. Moore was posting up in front of the net.
#Blackhawks tie the game

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 24, 2025
  • A little more than 12 minutes into the third, Bedard got his pocket picked and the Hawks started scrambling. A rebound found an open Emmitt Finnie to the side of the net and he banked a shot in off Rinzel to give the Wings a 3-2 lead.
  • When the Blackhawks got desperate at the end of regulation, there were too many passes that were too hard. Lots of grenades. No tying goal.

Overall takeaways

NHL GameScore Impact Card for Chicago Blackhawks on 2025-09-23: pic.twitter.com/q0lrkA7Yhe

— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) September 24, 2025
  • For Detroit, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård looks like the real deal. He was a problem all night and had two assists in the game. Finnie had a good night as well.
  • Söderblom stopped 40 of 43 in the game. Once again, he deserved better.
  • In his one preseason appearance, I thought Jack Pridham was pretty good. He’s headed back to Kitchener after the game.
  • Dach played a physical game and led the Blackhawks with six hits. I thought he had a good night.
  • Del Mastro finished the night skating 20:44 with four hits, one shot on net and one blocked shot. I thought he had an okay game overall. There were a few moments that weren’t great, and he was skating in a top-pair role. Will tonight’s performance guarantee him a roster spot in Florida on Oct. 7? Probably not; it’s the first preseason game. Will he be with Rinzel when the season opens? Maybe not. But all things considered, I think he was okay.
  • Rinzel skated a team-leading 23:04, attempted eight shots (five were on net) and was credited with four hits. He got off to a relatively slow start but looked better over the final 40 minutes of regulation.
  • They’re going to need more time working on the defensive zone. Lots of issues in that end tonight. There are going to be plenty of learning moments this year with so many young guys back there, so a reminder that this was the first preseason game.
  • Bedard won 7 of 10 faceoffs, scored a power play goal and skated 20:27.
  • After a nice rush to get the first good look of the night in the first period, I barely noticed Lukas Reichel the rest of the night.

Three Blackhawks Need to Make a Strong Early Impression

Since the end of the 2024-25 season, three Chicago Blackhawks skaters have been working to help their NHL club get better. But they’ve also had an eye on the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were asked to represent the United States and helped win a gold medal at the World Championship. Nazar really stood out in that tournament; he was the leading point-producer for the USA in the tournament. Both were then invited to the USA’s summer orientation camp as well.

Connor Bedard wasn’t on Canada’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off and opted to pass on playing for his country at the IIHF Men’s World Championship early in the offseason. He wanted to focus on getting ready for a strong third NHL season. He was invited to Canada’s summer orientation camp, meaning he’s on the radar for the roster.

All three hope to impress the groups making the final selections for their respective rosters, and will need to start the season strong to remain in consideration.

When I say start the season strong, I mean really start the season strong.

On Wednesday, David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported countries need to narrow their lists of prospective players for the 2026 Winter Olympics to 42 skaters and five goalies by October 15.

2026 Winter Olympic note: IIHF National Associations must submit lists of 42 skaters and 5 goalies by Oct. 15.

— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) September 24, 2025

That gives Bedard, Vlasic and Nazar four games (not including the game they’ll play in St. Louis on that Wednesday night) to make a statement they belong on their respective national rosters for further consideration. Nazar and Bedard will be playing the final seasons of their respective entry-level contracts as well. Nazar signed a seven-year extension in August. Bedard’s deal will get done.

The final rosters are expected to be announced by early January 2026.

As a reminder: Lukas Reichel was one of the first six skaters named to Germany’s roster for the Games, so we already know he’ll be there. (But will he do so representing the Blackhawks as well?)

The men’s hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will begin Feb. 11 in Milano Cortina, Italy. The teams will play in these three groups:

  • Group A: Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, and France.
  • Group B: Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, and Italy.
  • Group C: United States, Germany, Latvia, and Denmark.

Blackhawks Announce First Round of Roster Cuts

With one preseason game in the books, the Chicago Blackhawks announced their first round of roster cuts on Wednesday. The following players have been sent back to their junior clubs:

  • Marek Vanacker — Brantford (OHL)
  • Parker Holmes — Brantford (OHL)
  • Jack Pridham — Kitchener (OHL)
  • Nathan Behm — Kamloops (WHL)

Vanacker and Pridham played in Detroit on Tuesday night. Holmes and Behm will not see action in an NHL preseason game apparently.

The Blackhawks current training camp roster has 49 players: 26 forwards, 17 defensemen and six goaltenders.

Blackhawks Training Camp Takeaways: Injury Updates, Roster Moves, More

The Blackhawks took the day off on Wednesday after a less-than-spectacular preseason opener in Detroit on Tuesday night. Getting back on the ice on Thursday saw plenty of changes to the players in each group, and we got a few updates on the health of missing Blackhawks.

Here are some updates from during and after practice:

Blackhawks health updates

André Burakovsky and Teuvo Teräväinen were both on the ice with an almost full NHL group. But there were a few missing skaters still. Head coach Jeff Blashill shared that:

  • AJ Spellacy should return to practice Friday and be available for the weekend.
  • Joey Anderson is having a procedure for “something chronic” and will miss the remainder of the preseason. His regular season start is TBD.
  • Landon Slaggert, Samuel Savoie and Brett Seney “will skate on their own tomorrow and will not play on the weekend.”

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 25, 2025

Roster Moves?

I noted before the practices started on Thursday that the Blackhawks had two pretty clear groups set up: one looked a lot like the bulk of the Rockford IceHogs’ roster to start the season, while the other appeared to be the guys fighting for a spot on the Blackhawks’ opening night roster.

Indeed, during the practice it was Rockford head coach Jared Nightingale who was running the practice for the group that looked like they’re headed to the AHL to start the season. They were on the ice for an hour before the NHL group came out. We asked Blashill about the decision to make the moves he did with the practice groups:

“I made a decision to try and ramp it up a little bit to get to a group of guys who are competing more for NHL jobs and not necessarily spread the two teams out.”

However, Blashill also said there are guys in the second group who could still be in the mix for an NHL spot to start the season, and he might flip a few guys between the groups for Friday. Stay tuned there…

The #Blackhawks will have a split practice again today. But, after the first day off of camp, it sure feels like they're already making some roster decisions.

Today's groups give us a glimpse into where it appears guys are headed to start the seasonhttps://t.co/rmoJnoNGx1

— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) September 25, 2025

Takeaways from Tuesday’s loss

From Blashill:

“Going into the game, I was a little bit concerned on how tired we were going to be, based on not having taken a day off before that. I think that was our sixth straight day after a hard camp. I thought the second, third period we were slow to pucks and I would say we were slow to pucks probably for two reasons: we were thinking a lot, so that makes you slow, and we were a little bit tired. And the game, whatever, gets away from you a little bit.

“I thought [Arvid Söderblom] was great. In the first period when we had legs we did some good stuff. it’s a step and it gave us an opportunity to watch some video in some areas and practice it today and we’ll do the same thing tomorrow. That’s what you want the exhibition games for. I never put too much weight, especially in the early ones. As you get closer to real hockey, they become more important.”

Preseason expectations

With the final two sentences of Blashill’s quote above in mind — “I never put too much weight, especially in the early ones. As you get closer to real hockey, they become more important.” — we asked about what to expect from the guys who are expected to be in the NHL this year.

Blashill isn’t a big fan of the Blackhawks having two sets of back-to-backs during the preseason, and doesn’t want to put his veterans in both games. So expect a split squad this weekend on the road, and next weekend at home one of the two closing games at home will probably be the IceHogs.

The new head coach did acknowledge, however, that they’re doing things differently than the Blackhawks have the past few years and there is a learning curve. So guys like Nick Foligno and Connor Murphy will probably skate in three preseason games to make sure things are buttoned up before the results matter where they might ordinarily skate in only two at this stage in their respective careers.

Around the NHL: Barkov Hurt, Benn Out, Edmonton’s Nuclear Option Already? More

As training camps continue and preseason games begin, there’s a lot of of interesting news going on around the NHL.

On Thursday, we got a scary update from Dallas, a significant injury in Florida and word that Edmonton might go big up front to start the season. So let’s take a quick lap and catch up with some news and notes.

Panthers lose Barkov?

The Florida Panthers are coming off three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Final and two straight championships, so their veterans didn’t report to training camp until Thursday. Unfortunately for the Panthers, it didn’t take long for the first significant issue to pop up. As you can see in the clip below, captain Aleksander Barkov went down. He needed help from two trainers to leave the ice and is being evaluated.

This is obviously significant for the Blackhawks because Chicago opens the regular season in Florida in less than two weeks.

Scary news from Dallas

The news out of Dallas on Thursday was scary. Jamie Benn suffered a collapsed lung in their preseason game on Tuesday and required surgery. The team says he’ll be reevaluated in four weeks, which is obviously a full two weeks into the regular season. That doesn’t mean he’ll be skating and available for games at that time. Here’s hoping for a healthy recovery for the long-time leader in Dallas.

Oilers loading up already?

Over the past few years, the “nuclear option” for the Edmonton Oilers has been putting arguably the two best players on the planet — Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — together on the same line. Reports out of Edmonton already in camp are that the Oilers might start the season with the two superstars skating together.

Some really good comments on the idea from Pierre LeBrun on TSN here:

Odds & Ends

LeBrun updated a number of the situations surrounding potential 2026 free agents. Three potentially big-ticket forwards had my attention. We’ll start there:

  • Adrian Kempe — LA Kings: still working on a long-term extension with the Kings. Trying to gauge the market and what the future of the cap means for a 29-year-old winger.
  • Alex Tuch — Buffalo Sabres: ditto everything I wrote about Kempe. In fact, Kempe getting a deal done might help this one get done.
  • Martin Nečas — Colorado Avalanche: “There’s no question Colorado has communicated clearly to the Necas camp that it wants to extend him at some point this season. And there have been preliminary talks, but my sense is that they haven’t yet gotten into the nitty-gritty of exchanging offers and counteroffers.
  • The Oilers shared that forward Vasily Podkolzin’s father suddenly passed away, and he will be taking a leave of absence to return to Russia.
  • Finally, Pittsburgh was trying to hit some non-residents for a “jock tax” that was thrown out on Thuresday by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Around the NHL: Surgery for Barkov, Habs Lose a Defenseman, Waivers, Leafs’ Goalies, More

The Blackhawks play two preseason games this weekend, which at least gives us some somewhat-real hockey to watch. But we’re nearing the middle of training camps around the NHL, so let’s take a quick Friday lap and get caught up.

Barkov out — for the year?

The biggest news in the NHL on Friday was news that Sasha Barkov underwent surgery on his right knee after suffering an injury in practice Thursday. Multiple reports are that his 2025-26 season might be over before it begins, which is obviously a huge blow to the Panthers’ chance of playing in a fourth consecutive Stanley Cup Final — or winning a third straight.

The Blackhawks’ first game of the regular season is against the Panthers for their banner raising ceremony on Oct. 7 and clearly Barkov won’t be in the lineup. Matthew Tkachuk won’t be, either; he’s out until December. Also remember the new salary cap rules for the playoffs are happening now, so Barkov missing the entire season actually gives the Panthers more cap flexibility to do something than if he can come back at some point.

Per HC Paul Maurice, Florida Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov is currently undergoing surgery (right knee injury).

Maurice says they will hopefully have a detailed update later today.

Another injury helping the Blackhawks early?

The Montreal Canadiens announced defenseman David Reinbacher will be out for four weeks because of a broken metacarpal bone. Reinbacher, 20, was the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He has yet to appear in an NHL game and has only 21 regular-season AHL games on his resume, but there are high hopes for him to be an impact skater on the blue line for the Habs.

That means he’ll likely miss facing the Blackhawks in their home opener on Oct. 11.

Waivers Season

NHL teams have started placing players on waivers already. Utah goalie Connor Ingram cleared waivers on Friday, so that’s a situation to keep an eye on moving forward. The club and player have agreed Ingram needs a change of scenery. Chris Johnston shared the list of players on waivers for Friday, led by goalie Ivan Fedotov. He appeared in 26 games for the Flyers last year and was traded to Columbus on Sept. 14. Will be interesting to see if a team that needs a goalie makes a claim there.

Placed on NHL waivers today: Ivan Fedotov (CBJ), Liam Foudy (NYI), Julien Gauthier (NYI), Cole McWard (NYI), Gavin Mitchell (NYI), Kevin Connaughton (UTA), Calle Rosen (WSH) and Spencer Smallman (WSH).

Odds & Ends

  • Alex Ovechkin hasn’t practiced with the Capitals since leaving a few minutes into the first session of training camp Sept. 18 because of a lower-body injury, but they’re hoping he can join the team this weekend. He’s still expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are having a bit of a reunion. With Joseph Woll away from the team for personal reasons, the Leafs signed veteran netminder James Reimer to a tryout agreement.

Busy Weekend, Prospect Highlights, Blashill on Nazar, Dickinson’s Wrist, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks play a preseason game tonight. And another one tomorrow! What a time to be alive! The lineup was the same on Friday as the one we saw on Thursday (I detailed in my bullets yesterday) with a couple minor tweaks: Oliver Moore and Lukas Reichel got a few laps with the third and fourth lines, respectively, and Kevin Korchinski and Nolan Allan were the fourth defensive pair while Matt Grzelcyk and Louis Crevier were with the AHL group. AJ Spellacy returned to the ice with the AHL group as well.

ICYMI I wrote about the deep context around the status of Kevin Korchinski. There’s a lot to consider when discussing the development of a young defensemen, and I tried to unpack all of it.

  • Here’s what Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said about Frank Nazar‘s camp thus far on Friday:
“Frank had a great end of the year. What happens then is expectations rise. Frank could play almost the exact same, but the expectations are different, so his game has to rise. It can’t stay the same. And I think Frank knows that.”
Chicago head coach Jeff Blashill instructs his team twice to skate to the boards and back after some sloppy passes before blowing his whistle and screaming: “We’ve got to get better today with passing!”

  • Ben Pope shared that Blackhawks veteran center Jason Dickinson had wrist surgery this summer.
Jason Dickinson quietly had surgery on his left wrist this summer, which restricted his training until July.

He still can't rotate or flex it as much as his right wrist, but he doesn't expect it to affect him this season.

  • Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham scored this game-winning power play goal last night in Kitchener’s 5-2 win over Erie.

  • Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm started his WHL season with a (couple) bang(s). He scored twice — both at even strength — and put six shots on net to lead Kamloops to a 4-3 win over Seattle. He was named the game’s No. 1 star.

  • The Florida Panthers confirmed their captain, Sasha Barkov, had surgery to repair both his ACL and MCL in his right knee on Friday. He will be out for 7-9 months, which is (counts on fingers) the entire regular season.
  • Front Office Sports was the first to report that ESPN is moving Emily Kaplan from being a sideline reporter to a studio insider this season.
  • A good resource here from the folks at The Athletic. They’re going to keep a running tracker of players put on waivers.
