Buffalo Bills 2026 schedule of opponents: Home, away matchups confirmed

gettyimages-1694566744.jpg

The Buffalo Bills settled into second place in the AFC East during Week 17, finalizing several of their opponents for the 2026 season. The rest of the opponent list came into focus on Sunday as the second-place team in the rest of the AFC divisions were finalized.

Buffalo Bills 2026 opponents

The Bills will always do the home-and-home series with the other three AFC East teams, so the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets are on the docket.

The three-year rotation brings together the AFC West and the AFC East in 2026, so the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Las Vegas Raiders will all be Bills opponents in 2026.

The four-year rotation with the NFC divisions will have the AFC East playing the NFC North. The Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Bears are all on Buffalo’s schedule.

The three final opponents are determined by division finish. The second-place team in the AFC South and the AFC North will play the Bills along with the second-place team in the NFC West. The Houston Texans were second in the AFC South, the Baltimore Ravens were second in the AFC North, and the Los Angeles Rams were second in the NFC West. That’s a tough gauntlet.

Buffalo Bills 2026 home game schedule

The Bills will have eight home games in 2026 as the NFC will get the extra home game this season.

  • New England Patriots
  • Miami Dolphins
  • New York Jets
  • Kansas City Chiefs
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Chicago Bears
  • Detroit Lions
  • Baltimore Ravens

Buffalo Bills 2026 away game schedule

Buffalo will play nine road games in 2026 with the NFC getting the extra home game on the rotation.

  • New England Patriots
  • Miami Dolphins
  • New York Jets
  • Denver Broncos
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Green Bay Packers
  • Houston Texans
  • Los Angeles Rams

Depending on the time of year, the Las Vegas and Denver trips could be really fun. Houston and L.A. in the winter will be a wonderful destination.

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook III rushing toward an All-Pro season in 2025

gettyimages-2237904121.jpg

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook III has put together an incredible campaign in 2025, having just claimed the NFL rushing title, finishing with 1,621 rushing yards — and over the likes of Derrick Henry, Jonathan Taylor, Christian McCaffrey, and Bijan Robinson. In short, Cook has paid massive dividends for the Bills since signing his contract extension last summer.

As the league’s leading rusher in 2025, does that mean Cook is destined for an All-Pro season? If NFL history is any indicator, the outlook is good for Cook. In the last 24 NFL seasons, 23 of 24 rushing title holders were also named All-Pro. The lone season where the winner of the rushing title wasn’t named All-Pro in that span came in 2017, when Kareem Hunt led the league in rushing yards, but was passed over for All-Pro by Todd Gurley and Le’Veon Bell.

Interestingly, the top three rushers of the 2025 NFL regular season match up in one regard with the top three rushers of that 2017 campaign. In 2017, Hunt rushed for 22 yards more than Gurley, and 36 yards more than Bell. In 2025, Cook out-rushed Henry by 26 yards, and Taylor by 36. The 2017 and 2025 NFL seasons are the only instances to this point where the top rushers were all within 50 yards of one another.

Does that mean Cook could be looking at a fate similar to Hunt, and be on the outside looking in at First-Team All-Pro for 2025? Time will tell, but Cook’s overall stat line is too impressive to easily ignore, and helped pave the way to this third-consecutive Pro Bowl selection:

309 carries for 1,621 yards (5.2 ypc) with 12 rushing touchdowns; 33 receptions (40 targets) for 291 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Cook joins NFL Hall of Fame running back O.J. Simpson as the only Bills players to lead the NFL in rushing yards in a single season. Simpson accomplished the feat four separate times, in 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. Bills legend Cookie Gilchrist led the AFL in rushing for two consecutive seasons, during the 1962 and 1964 AFL campaigns. Gilchrist was the first player in AFL history to rush for 1,000-plus yards (1,096), doing so in his first season with the Bills — an effort that won him AFL MVP.

NFL Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas never led the NFL in rushing yards in any of his 12 years with Buffalo, but he did lead the league in scrimmage yards for four consecutive seasons, from 1989 through 1992. Running back Fred Jackson led the NFL in combined net yards during the 2009 NFL season, when he gained 1,062 rushing yards, 371 receiving yards, 69 punt return yards, and 1,014 kick return yards.

Cook has proven indispensable to Buffalo’s offense in 2025, and the increased workload has only made him a better player. In forming a dynamite pairing with quarterback Josh Allen, Cook has become one of the NFL’s true elite featured running backs.

Mitchell Trubisky leads Buffalo Bills backups to victory in Week 18

gettyimages-2254656014.jpg

The Buffalo Bills came into their final regular-season game against the New York Jets with a playoff berth clinched. The Bills were guaranteed a wild card spot, but whether they would end up the five, six, or seven seed was still up for grabs. After the Houston Texans came from behind to beat the Indianapolis Colts during the early games on Sunday, Buffalo knew they could only be trendy and end up the six or seven seed.

Well, thanks to a loss by the Los Angeles Chargers and a dominant victory by the Bills, we now know that Buffalo is the six seed and heading to Duval County, FL to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday afternoon. The Bills didn’t play most of their starters in Week 18, instead letting the reserves do the heavy lifting. The Jets were no match for Buffalo’s backups, as the Bills racked up 470 total yards while allowing a season-low 122 yards to a Jets’ offense playing plenty of backups, as well.

Our five players to watch not only played on Sunday, but they played well. Here’s how our five players to watch performed in what will likely be the final game ever played at Highmark Stadium.
_____________________________________________________________________________

QB Mitchell Trubisky

After Josh Allen took the first snap, extending his league-leading consecutive start streak to 135 games (122 regular-season games plus 13 playoff games) by handing off to James Cook III, he jogged off the field and ceded the reins to Trubisky. The backup delivered one of his finest career performances against an overmatched Jets defense.

Full disclosure: I couldn’t watch much of the first matchup between these two teams. I was coaching my eight-year-old son’s soccer team in the fall, and we had a game at the same time as the first matchup.

Watching on Sunday, I was stunned by just how bad the Jets are. Trubisky moved Buffalo’s offense like Shakira — wherever, whenever — throwing for 259 yards and four touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes. Trubisky threw a few near-interceptions, which would have broken the Jets’ season-long streak without one, but New York was unable to secure any of the “turnover-worthy plays.”

Trubisky showed off his mobility, as well, scrambling once for nine yards, but also in moving in the pocket to buy time for his receivers to separate. His touchdown passes went to tight end Dawson Knox, running back Ty Johnson, wide receiver Gabe Davis, and running back Ray Davis.

Is Trubisky someone who can lead a team to contention over the course of a 17-game schedule? Perhaps not. However, he proved once again that he is more than capable of stepping in and leading an offense in the short term when called upon.

RB Ray Davis

What a day for Buffalo’s third running back. Davis has had a difficult season, with a far more limited (read: nearly non-existent) role on offense this year. However, he had a career day on Sunday.

Davis handled the vast majority of the offensive snaps, carrying 21 times for a career-high 151 yards in the game. While he didn’t manage a rushing touchdown, he did find his way into the end zone via a two-yard reception in the second quarter. He also gained 21 yards on a catch earlier.

Davis has carved out a role as a kickoff returner this year, as he led the NFL with 30.4 yards per kickoff return. However, it was nice to see him do some damage as a runner, too. With starter James Cook having a career year, leading the NFL in rushing yards with 1,621 yards, there were fewer touches for Davis and fellow reserve running back Ty Johnson this season. Given Johnson’s success in the passing game, Davis has been the odd man out of Buffalo’s three-headed attack.

Even though it was against a Jets team that looked completely checked out, it was still nice to see Davis have a big game.

WR Keon Coleman

The second-year man saw four targets in the game. He made some nice grabs, including a sliding catch near the front pylon that nearly resulted in a touchdown. He also did a nice job securing a grab on a two-point conversion, toe-tapping in the front corner of the end zone to convert just the second successful two-point play of the season for the Bills. While the game was run-heavy, it was perhaps a little disappointing that Coleman only had those two catches and four targets.

Coleman was unable to secure a pass that, while behind him, hit him in the shoulder. He also broke wide open for a 37-yard catch and run, which was a season-long reception for No. 0. Buffalo also used Coleman as the punt returner, as Khalil Shakir dressed for the game but did not play. Coleman returned one punt for just two yards.

It was good to see the Bills try to give Coleman something to build on heading into the playoffs, but his play did nothing to show that he needs to be active for the team on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Barring injury, Coleman has likely played his last snaps of the 2025 season.

C Sedrick Van Pran-Granger

I had a hunch that the team would rest some offensive linemen, and given the expiring contracts they have along the interior offensive line, I was particularly interested in watching SVPG to see if he would play a bit. Not only did he play, but he acquitted himself extremely well on Sunday.

Buffalo’s offensive line cleared the way for a 211-yard rushing performance. Trubisky saw little to no pressure up front. When the Bills were stuffed on some short-yardage plays, it was more an issue of the play call being obvious than it was a missed block.

What was really cool to watch was Van Pran-Granger running up to serve as each ball-carrier’s personal hype man after a big gain. On more than one big play, I saw the second-year center run up and celebrate.

With both Conor McGovern and David Edwards set to hit free agency in March, this was a test to see if the Bills can try to replace one of those players with an internal promotion. Van Pran-Granger passed the test with flying colors, with the obvious caveat being that the quality of opponent wasn’t exactly anything great.

DB Jordan Hancock

The rookie defensive back played like a man possessed, flying around on defense and throwing his body around to dole out punishment time and again. On more than one play, Hancock came in and finished off Jets ballcarriers. He seemed to be lined up mostly at safety, as the Bills went with Hancock and Darnell Savage for most of the game, but he played a few other places in the secondary out of necessity, as well.

Hancock saw some slot snaps in place of Cam Lewis, who played right around half the team’s defensive snaps. When rookie Maxwell Hairston suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter, it was Hancock who kicked outside to play corner. Special teams ace Sam Franklin came in to play safety at that point.

If Buffalo wanted to have a look at Hancock to see what kind of role he might play next year, Sunday was a good reminder that he can do a whole lot of good things for this defense. He finished the game with five tackles.

Buffalo Bills CB Maxwell Hairston “unlikely to play” against Jaguars

gettyimages-2247965353.jpg

The Buffalo Bills are no strangers to fielding a postseason roster compromised by injury woes. Like many teams, it’s seldom that the Bills have ever entered the playoffs at full strength, and utilizing their intended defensive starters. With that, Buffalo must now prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars without a key co-starter in the defensive backfield.

Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston is dealing with an ankle injury and isn’t expected to suit up against the Bills’ wild card opponent this coming Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters that Hairston is “unlikely to play this week,” due to the injury he suffered during the fourth quarter of action against the New York Jets in Week 18.

It remains to be seen how defensive coordinator Bobby Babich and head coach Sean McDermott will tackle the situation, but the good news is that veteran cornerback Tre’Davious White appears set to continue his role as co-starter opposite cornerback Christian Benford.White and Hairston had been rotating snaps since the rookie made his way into the starting lineup following a knee injury that sidelined him to begin the season.

Practices this week should reveal a lot about how they intend to replace Hairston’s snaps, whether that involves some combination of veteran cornerback Dane Jackson, rookie defensive back Jordan Hancock, or perhaps even defensive back Daryl Porter Jr., who was just signed to Buffalo’s practice squad. Porter was part of the team’s 91-man roster during the summer, and his most likely path to playing against Jacksonville could be via special teams.

None of the current options beyond White are ideal, but it’s not new territory for the Bills. It’s unfortunate that cornerback Darius Slay Jr. refused to report to One Bills Drive after general manager Brandon Beane put a successful claim in for his services.

Buffalo Bills sign kicker to the practice squad following Matt Prater injury

gettyimages-2247030763.jpg

The Buffalo Bills signed a kicker to their practice squad on Tuesday, adding veteran Matthew Wright ahead of Sunday’s playoff game at the Jacksonville Jaguars. To make room for Wright on the practice squad, they released offensive tackle Richard Gouraige.

Roster moves:

– The Bills have signed K Matthew Wright to the team’s practice squad & released OL Richard Gouraige.

– The team also signed K Maddux Trujillo to a Reserve/Future contract.

More info on Matthew Wright ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/nSUAoh2h8y

— Buffalo Bills PR (@BuffaloBillsPR) January 6, 2026

Wright, 29, appeared in four games this season, playing for three different teams. He kicked in two games for the Houston Texans, and one each for the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans. He was five-for-five on field goal attempts with a long of 46 yards this season. He was also perfect on PATs, nailing all four of the tries he attempted.

Wright originally entered the NFL in November 2020, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has appeared in 33 games across his six NFL seasons, kicking for eight teams in that time. In addition to the clubs mentioned above, he’s also kicked for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo’s opponent on Sunday.

Wright appeared in 14 games for Jacksonville during the 2021 season, his longest stint with one club during a season. He was 21-of-24 on field goals that year with a long of 56 yards. He made 13-of-15 extra points. For his career overall, Wright has made 60-of-68 field goals (88.2%) with a long of 59 yards. He is 45-for-47 (95.7%) on PATs.

Wright joins the practice squad with Buffalo’s regular kicker, Tyler Bass, having spent the duration of the season on injured reserve. His replacement this year, Matt Prater, has been excellent, hitting 18-of-20 field goals with a long of 52 yards this season. Prater is also 43-of-46 on extra point tries. However, Prater is dealing with an injured quad, which led him to miss Buffalo’s games against the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. Michael Badgley kicked in his place, and while he made his only field goal try, a 41-yard kick in Buffalo’s 23-20 win over Cleveland, he missed an extra point in both games.

Gouraige, 27, has been on and off Buffalo’s practice squad a few times this season. He has not appeared in a game this year, though he did play three snaps on offense in his one career game back in 2024.

Buffalo also signed kicker Maddux Trujillo to a reserve/future contract. Trujillo, 22, joined the Indianapolis Colts this spring as an undrafted free agent, but he was waived in August with an injury designation. He made 16-of-21 field goals with the Temple Owls during his final NCAA season, and he was a perfect 21-for-21 on PATs. By signing a reserve/future deal, Trujillo cannot participate with the Bills this year, but his contract will become official once the Bills’ season ends.

Buffalo Bills sign CB Dane Jackson to 53-man active roster

gettyimages-1767728193.jpg

The Buffalo Bills have announced a series of roster moves ahead of their playoff matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, January 11. Notably, veteran cornerback Dane Jackson was signed to the 53-man active roster.

Adding Jackson all but guarantees that rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston won’t be available to play on Sunday. Hairston suffered an ankle injury late in the fourth quarter of Buffalo’s Week 18 game against the New York Jets.

Jackson knows the system but it remains to be seen what he brings to the field from a physical standpoint at this stage of his career. If Jackson plays, he’s likely to be rotated in to spell cornerback Tre’Davious White — the latter of whom should be expected to play the lion’s share of snaps on the boundary opposite cornerback Christian Benford.

To make room for Jackson, the Bills placed defensive tackle Jordan Phillips on Injured Reserve, which effectively ends his 2025 season. That means rookie defensive tackles Deone Walker and T.J. Sanders should get plenty of snaps for what will be their first playoff game.

Buffalo also made a pair of moves with the practice squad, welcoming back quarterback Shane Buechele who was on the practice squad all season before signing to the Kansas City Chiefs’ active roster for a few weeks. Cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. (who spent the summer with Buffalo) was also signed to the practice squad.

Roster moves:

Bills news: First look at Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars

gettyimages-2174053096.jpg

The Buffalo Bills (12-5) have made the playoffs in the last seven seasons with Josh Allen as their starting quarterback, but unlike the previous five years where the Bills won the AFC East title, this year’s run to the Super Bowl begins on the road with the Bills as the AFC’s six seed.

Allen and the Bills have a tough task in front of them, drawing Trevor Lawrence and the red-hot Jacksonville Jaguars (13-4), who earned the three seed by winning the AFC South and bring an NFL-best eight-game winning streak into Sunday’s 1 p.m. EST clash.

Today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by previewing the wild card round matchup between the Bills and the Jaguars.

gettyimages-2174053096.jpg

Bills must slow down the NFL’s hottest team

The Jacksonville Jaguars are the hottest team in the league right now, with an eight-game winning streak heading into the playoffs. They have not lost since a 36-29 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 10.

Recently, playing in Jacksonville has been a house of horrors for the Bills, including one of then ugliest games in team history: a 9-6 setback on November 7, 2021, when Josh Allen was picked off twice and sacked four times and Jacksonville’s aggressive defense kept the Bills out of the end zone, and Lawrence and the Jags won despite amassing only 218 yards of total offense.

The Bills have not won in Jacksonville since the 2013 NFL season and have not won a road playoff game since knocking off Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins in the 1992 AFC Championship game.

We break down how Lawrence and Jacksonville’s passing attack has caught fire during their eight-game winning streak; how trade deadline acquisition Jakobi Meyers has made an immediate impact; how the pressure will be on Allen’s receiving targets to come through in the clutch against the Jags’ zone defense; how James Cook and Buffalo’s offensive line will be challenged by Jacksonville’s league-leading run defense; how Allen and Buffalo’s aerial attack can take advantage of Jacksonville’s secondary; and more!

Latest news on injured CB Maxwell Hairston

Head coach Sean McDermott said cornerback Maxwell Hairston is “unlikely to play” in Sunday’s playoff game in Jacksonville after the promising rookie suffered an ankle injury late in Sunday’s 35-8 win over the New York Jets.

OH MAN we're talking about this now!! Let's GO!!

First off, Trubisky absolutely BALLING OUT against the Jets was beautiful to watch. 259 yards, 4 TDs, 76% completion rate?? Against backups or not, the man showed he's a legit insurance policy. That's EXACTLY what you want from your QB2. Not saying he's gonna lead us to a Super Bowl, but if Josh needs a breather or god forbid goes down for a game, we're not completely screwed.

Ray Davis with 151 yards rushing had me hyped!! Kid's been buried behind Cook all year (rightfully so with Cook leading the league in rushing yards), but he showed he's got JUICE when given the opportunity.

Now the bad news... Hairston going down SUCKS. The kid was developing nicely alongside Benford and now we're rolling with Tre White and bringing Dane Jackson back?? Look, I love what Dane did for us in the past but let's be real - there's a reason he's been bouncing around. At least we know the system.

The Jacksonville matchup scares me a bit not gonna lie. Eight game winning streak, best run defense in the league, and we haven't won down there since 2013?? That 9-6 loss in 2021 still gives me nightmares. BUT this is a different Bills team. Josh is playing at an MVP level and we're battle tested.

Also bringing in Matthew Wright as kicker insurance is smart. Prater's been money but that quad injury is concerning. Can't be missing kicks in the playoffs!!

LET'S GO BUFFALO!! 🦬

Will the Buffalo Bills finally defeat the Jaguars in the NFL playoffs?

gettyimages-2254937452.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Bills fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The postseason is finally here, which, for fans of the Buffalo Bills, feels like ages in the making. Every ounce of belief Bills Mafia has in this team rides on their playoff journey. No pressure, right? Through 18 weeks of polls, we’ve asked Rumblers and Bills fans alike to weigh in with their confidence, whether full of it or lacking until elimination season starts.

If you needed a second reminder, here: It’s officially elimination season. With that, Buffalo’s looking to be the last team standing early in February. For the purposes of our poll here, we’re still perhaps at a bit of a disadvantage in tabulating data. I say that simply because playoff football hasn’t actually started yet, and all there is to reflect on are the 17 regular-season games. In those prior polls, a fairly consistent sub-50% of voters were compelled to state confidence in this season’s club.

Saying that, I don’t expect a huge swing in results simply because we haven’t seen how the Bills play in this season’s postseason. Even then, there may really be no major swing until Buffalo’s season ends, or at the point if and when they finally get over the AFC Championship Game hurdle.

It all starts on Sunday, where Buffalo must play efficient, complementary (read: turnover free) football against a Jacksonville Jaguars team that enjoys taking the football away. The Bills must put up points on offense each and every time they have the ball, ideally touchdowns. Should they find their way to a mid-game slump on either end of the half, it could prove too much for them to dig out of against a Jaguars team that also enjoys scoring points.

Buffalo has never defeated Jacksonville in the playoffs, though there’s just two games of history on that front. The first time they faced off was at the tail end of the Super Bowl greats careers, while the last time they met it was a plucky and under-powered Bills team just happy to have ended a 17-year playoff drought.

This Sunday, the Jaguars will have to contend with quarterback Josh Allen and running back James Cook III. Is that enough to finally get the Bills a playoff win over the Jaguars?

Buffalo Bills’ Joe Brady gets head coach interview with Baltimore Ravens

gettyimages-2245853253.jpg

Buffalo Bills fans have been very down on offensive coordinator Joe Brady during the 2025 season despite the offense being near the top of the league in every metric and sporting the league’s leading rusher in James Cook. Well, the Baltimore Ravens are very high on Brady and have requested an interview for their vacant head coach job.

Brady interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach job but lost to Liam Coen in 2025. He was also linked to the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets at the time.

The Bills and Ravens have played three times with Brady as the offensive coordinator. Buffalo scored 27 points in the playoff a year ago and dropped 41 on Baltimore in Week 1 of the 2025 season.

Buffalo was second in points scored in 2024, Brady’s first season as coordinator. The finished 2025 as the fourth-best team at scoring points and were first in rushing.

The Ravens moved on from longtime head coach John Harbaugh after the season. The first coach in Ravens history was also a former Bills OC in Ted Marchibroda from 1996 to 1998. Brian Billick replaced him and Harbaugh succeeded him in 2008. That’s the list.

Who would replace Joe Brady as Bills offensive coordinator?

The Bills don’t have an obvious in-house replacement for Brady should he get the job. That’s not a dealbreaker, because Brady never worked with McDermott before being hired as QBs coach in 2022. They share a common alma mater in William & Mary College, but were years apart.

Tight ends coach Rob Boras has previous experience as an offensive coordinator with the Jeff Fisher Rams in late 2015 and 2016. He has been with the Bills as TE coach since 2017.

Offensive line coach Aaron Kromer was the Chicago Bears OC in 2013 and 2014, but head coach Marc Trestman called the plays. He has been the OL coach since 2022 when Brain Daboll hired away Bobby Johnson to the New York Giants.

Quarterbacks coach is usually a place where folks look as a stepping stone to the offensive coordinator role. Ronald Curry serves that role and joined Buffalo in 2024 after Brady was promoted to offensive coordinator. Curry was with the Saints from 2016 to 2023, working beside Brady during 2017 and 2018. Despite his time in the system, he was never promoted to offensive coordinator in New Orleans despite heavy turnover there.

Another stepping stone to offensive coordinator is usually passing game coach, but the Bills list Marc Lubick in that role as a “specialist” not “coordinator”. He’s pretty green for the position.

Brian Daboll, Buffalo’s former offensive coordinator, is available after being fired as the New York Giants head coach. It’s unclear if he would return to Buffalo. He has a great relationship with QB Josh Allen, but I never got the sense that Daboll and Sean McDermott were on the same page to the point where it might be a slam dunk return.

Ken Dorsey is likely going to be on the market after the Cleveland Browns’ coaching staff overhaul, but it’s unlikely he would return after McDermott fired him a few years ago.

Kansas City Chiefs pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier worked on the same staff as McDermott with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009.

Former Bills QB coach David Culley hasn’t worked in the NFL since being fired as the Houston Texans head coach following the 2021 season.

3 Buffalo Bills ruled out for playoff game vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

gettyimages-2248563593.jpg

The Buffalo Bills wrapped up their week of practice on Friday, now ready to head down to Duval County, FL to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in a playoff rematch eight seasons in the making. Buffalo may have to do so without the help of a few key defensive players, namely a pair of starters who have been ruled out ahead of Sunday’s playoff game.

Buffalo Bills list 3 players as “OUT” vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Linebacker Terrel Bernard has been ruled out this weekend, having dealt with a calf injury that kept him a “DNP” throughout the week. Also ruled out is cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who suffered an ankle injury late in Week 18 against the New York Jets. Hairston also wasn’t able to practice at all this week, which didn’t predict good things for his availability on Sunday. It’s been an injury-filled season for Buffalo’s defensive captain.

Safety Damar Hamlin has also been ruled out as he continues to make his way back to the field following a pectoral injury that landed him on Injured Reserve (IR) earlier in the season. Hamlin just returned to practice this week after an extended time away, so the team is likely to take things slow with him for the time being after he logged a series of limited practices.

Bills list 4 players as “Questionable” for Sunday vs. Jaguars

Heading into Sunday’s matchup in Jacksonville, Buffalo has designated four players as questionable. Running back Ty Johnson suffered an ankle injury in Week 18, but was able to return to action in limited capacity. In the aftermath, Johnson has only been able to log one day of practice — and as a limited participant. Losing Johnson would be a huge hit for the Bills, as he’s a significant contributor at running back, and especially so during key third-down situations.

Wide receiver Joshua Palmer is also listed as questionable for Sunday, the product of an ankle injury that continues to derail his season. We don’t know the full extent of Palmer’s ankle injury, but for him to continue being listed as either out or questionable to play week to week doesn’t breed confidence that the injury is properly healing on its own.

Kicker Matt Prater is also listed as questionable after reportedly aggravating a quadriceps injury to his kicking leg in Week 18. Prater has stated that he’s ready to go, but the team is likely to proceed cautiously and see how warmups go for him before declaring their starting kicker active or not. Prater had an up and down week of practice, listed as a “DNP” on Wednesday, then as a full participant Thursday, before another “DNP” on Friday. Some of that could be due to the team being cautious so as not to overwork Prater ahead of Sunday.

Linebacker Shaq Thompson has also been given a questionable tag for Sunday. Thompson has been dealing with a neck injury, which rendered him a limited participant each day of practice in the lead up to Buffalo’s opening playoff game. Should Thompson be unable to suit up, that would leave the Bills without two of their three top linebackers in the rotation. Expect linebacker Dorian Williams to take up the mantle alongside Matt Milano if Thompson is sidelined.

9 Bills enter weekend with no injury designation

In positive news, the following nine players are expected to be full-go for Sunday’s playoff game in Jacksonville:

QB Josh Allen (foot)
S Cole Bishop (ribs)
DE Joey Bosa (hamstring) (limited Friday, but no game-day designation)
DT DaQuan Jones (calf)
TE Dalton Kincaid (knee)
DB Cam Lewis (toe)
LB Matt Milano (illness)
S Jordan Poyer (hamstring)
DT T.J. Sanders (shoulder)

Buffalo Bills trending up/down ahead of playoffs vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

imagn-27816225.jpg

The Buffalo Bills are putting finishing touches in their game plan ahead of Sunday’s playoff matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Buffalo enters the postseason with a 12-5, having secured the six seed in the AFC. The offense averaged 28.3 points per game (fourth in the NFL), with the defense allowing 21.5. The Bills’ league-leading 2,714 rushing yards drove the success, despite passing inconsistencies and run defense issues.

Finishing 4-1 in the last five games may give Buffalo some momentum, but there are key players who appeared on the decline in that stretch, and could make things bleak in certain aspects. My selections for this week are based on season performances with recency weight, supported by metrics like Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades, DVOA, and CPOE.

Heroes: Trending Up

1. RB James Cook III

imagn-27934311.jpg

Cook dominated as the NFL’s rushing champion, fueling the league’s top ground attack. He totaled 1,621 yards on 309 carries (5.2 YPC) and 12 touchdowns, exceeding previous highs. Over Weeks 14-18, Cook averaged 112 yards per game at 6.1 YPC, with a 78.4 PFF run grade and 4.2 yards after contact per attempt, forcing 42 missed tackles (top-10).

His burst supports a 28% play-action rate (eighth-highest), ideal against Jacksonville’s NFL-best run defense. Getting Jimbo and the running game going could make a huge difference in Sunday’s matchup.

2. WR Brandin Cooks

gettyimages-2253866704.jpg

Brandin Cooks has injected speed into the offense, struggling early with some drops but now surging at a crucial time. With five receptions on 11 targets for 114 yards (22.8 yards per catch) as a Bill this season, his Week 17 outing versus the Eagles — four receptions for 101 yards (25.3 average, including a 50-yarder) — demonstrated big-play potential in a tight 13-12 defeat.

Boasting a 75.0 PFF receiving grade, 3.0 average separation (Next Gen Stats), and 2.1 yards per route run, Cooks’ velocity challenges defenses, vital for stretching Jacksonville’s 24th-ranked pass DVOA and helping Allen.

3. TE Dalton Kincaid

imagn-27932884.jpg

The third-year pro has become a go-to option, thriving when healthy and compensating for wide receiver shortcomings. Kincaid accumulated 571 yards on 39 receptions (14.6 average) and five touchdowns in 12 games, earning an 82 PFF grade with only two drops and 4.8 YAC per reception. In the final stretch, he averaged 72 yards per game with four scores, posting +0.8 CPOE on targets and 2.4 yards per route run.

Looking healthy in his 10 snaps against the New York Jets in the Week 18 35-8 win, Kincaid moved sharply and appears healthy and set to impact the passing attack. His red-zone effectiveness (three TDs inside the 20) could help exploit Jacksonville’s 24th TE DVOA in coverage.

Head-Scratchers: Trending Down

1. QB Josh Allen

imagn-27931813.jpg

The star quarterback heads into the playoffs with some question marks, though capable of rebounds. Allen passed for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, adding 579 rushing yards and 14 scores for 39 total TDs — one short of 40 for the first time since 2021.

His Week 17 performance against the Eagles included a key missed throw that might have secured victory in the 13-12 loss, which may have cost Buffalo better playoff seeding. Health concerns persist: His foot injury is reportedly mending, but past resilience through a broken hand last season and a torn elbow ligament in 2022 fuels some doubt there. Possible concealment could affect mobility (5.2 YPC, below career 6.0) and precision (69.3% completion, -0.5 CPOE recently).

We know 17 plays at his best when the lights are the brightest, and it gives me hope. We also know his willingness to play through painful injuries, and it can rattle him during a tough matchup. This team will go as far as Allen can take them, so hopefully the foot is really feeling better, and he can count on some help from his coaching staff and teammates in such a way that he can begin trending in the right direction at the best possible time.

2. GM Brandon Beane

gettyimages-2247378935.jpg

Beane’s recent decisions have faced plenty of backlash, and reveal roster flaws. Opting against wide receiver additions at the trade deadline after misjudging the level of the room during the offseason has caused concerns regarding his ability to build a winning roster around Allen.

Also, head coach Sean McDermott’s dissatisfaction with the Ingram/Slay fiasco has been palpable. The potential rift between the two former Panthers doesn’t stop here, though. McDermott has highlighted Jakobi Meyers’ value for Jacksonville (483 yards, three TDs), an option Beane could have pursued but abandoned for an unsuccessful attempt at Jalen Waddle.

With eight years together in Buffalo and no hardware during Allen’s prime, the roar for change could increase without playoff success this season. Right now, McDermott just seems safer than Beane. Time will tell.

3. The Middle Linebacker position

gettyimages-2236325842.jpg

Linebackers Terrel Bernard and Shaq Thompson have struggled through a challenging season, hampered by injuries and inconsistent play, which has contributed to defensive instability. Bernard played 12 games, recording 44 solo tackles and 21 assists for 65 total, but a poor 48.8 PFF grade, with weak coverage (46.7) and run defense (57.1), often struggling to disengage from blockers and sidelined with lower leg injuries.

Thompson, when available, managed 33 solo tackles and 23 assists for 56 total in 12 games, with a 64.8 PFF overall (70.2 coverage), but injuries — including a recent neck issue restricting practice this week — have limited him.

The Bills’ 28th-ranked run defense (4.8 YPC allowed) relies on one of them stepping up; without it, the 12th DVOA unit risks further decline. The presence of one of those two leaders in the middle is vital for McDermott and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich’s success with the unit.

Honorable Mentions

Heroes:

  • Cole Bishop (S) with 85 tackles, three INTs, and an 82.1 PFF coverage grade (-0.15 EPA/target);
  • Gregory Rousseau (DE) tallying seven sacks (78.6 pressure rate);
  • Khalil Shakir (WR) offering reliability (719 yards, 75.8% catch rate).

Head-Scratchers:

  • Keon Coleman (WR) inefficiency (404 yards, 58.3 PFF);
  • Joshua Palmer (WR) low output (303 yards on 22 catches, 0 TDs), injured again;
  • Maxwell Hairston (CB) injured last week (14 solo tackles, two INTs), probably not healthy for the playoff run.

Buffalo Bills roster moves ahead of playoff game vs Jacksonville Jaguars

gettyimages-2250608314.jpg

The Buffalo Bills announced a series of roster moves ahead of their playoff matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hours after downgrading wide receiver Joshua Palmer to out for the game, they placed the veteran wideout on Injured Reserve, officially ending his first season with One Bills Drive. Palmer, 26, finishes his first season in Buffalo with just 22 receptions for 303 yards on 37 targets.

In Palmer’s place, Buffalo signed veteran linebacker Baylon Spector to the active roster from the practice squad. Additionally, the Bills elevated two players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game: defensive end Andre Jones Jr. and running back Frank Gore Jr.

Roster moves:

– Signed LB Baylon Spector from the practice squad to the active roster

– Placed WR Joshua Palmer on Injured Reserve

– Elevated DE Andre Jones Jr. and RB Frank Gore Jr. from the practice squad

— Buffalo Bills PR (@BuffaloBillsPR) January 10, 2026

Spector, 27, is a familiar name, as the four-year vet has appeared in 29 regular-season games and one playoff game for Buffalo during his career. This season, Spector appeared in three regular-season games, making two tackles. He played just three snaps on defense, but he played 40 special teams snaps. With linebacker Terrel Bernard already out for Sunday’s game, the Bills needed another linebacker, and Spector should supplement linebacker Joe Andreessen on special teams.

Jones, 27, has also appeared in three games for Buffalo this season. He totaled five tackles in those contests. Jones appeared on 38 defensive snaps and 44 special teams snaps during this season. He’ll likely slot in as an early down substitute on the defensive line, having proved particularly proficient in defending the run in 2025. Joey Bosa, Greg Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa, and Javon Solomon are also active at defensive end.

Gore, 23, has yet to play in a regular-season game or playoff matchup in his two-year career. He’s been on the Bills’ practice squad for the past two seasons. Gore was elevated for one contest, a Monday Night Football game against the New York Jets during the 2024 season, but he didn’t receive any snaps.

Bills Mafia likes Buffalo’s chances vs. Jacksonville Jaguars in playoffs

gettyimages-2173326395.jpg

Well, Rumblers, it happened. We’ve finally tipped the scales a bit in favor of confidence in this season’s Buffalo Bills team. In fact, the percentage of voters confident in the Bills mere hours before kickoff of their playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is the highest it’s been since Week 10.

You may remember that back in Week 9, Buffalo defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Voters were riding high and confident the Bills were headed in the right direction. Then the Chiefs lost the arrowheads to their spears and missed the playoffs. Meanwhile, Bills Mafia’s confidence nosedived for five weeks thereafter. Fandom is a fickle thing.

Fast-forward to today, and now 56% of voters are confident the Bills are headed in the right direction. It’s still a surprising figure when you consider their continued playoff ways, and entering the postseason with the NFL’s best rushing attack led by the league leader in rushing yards in James Cook III. It’s not just the Josh Allen show this season, but perhaps that has some folks uneasy. The 2025 season hasn’t looked like other recent campaigns featuring Allen, and much of that is due to the mess at wide receiver. Will it come back to haunt them during elimination play?

As you read on below, you’ll discover that while just over half of voters are confident in Buffalo, a much different percentage of those same voters further surprised us in discussing the Bills’ matchup with the Jaguars.

Buffalo_1_010626.png

Here’s what our chart looks like after a season’s worth of data and heading into this afternoon’s playoff game against the Jaguars.

Buffalo-Bills-fan-confidence-20258.png

Moving on…

It doesn’t make a lot of sense when you consider the above results, but almost three quarters of voters (73%) believe the Bills will finally get a win over the Jaguars in the playoffs. Somehow, 17% of fans are more confident Buffalo wins in Jacksonville than they are confident in the direction of the team. Fandom is fickle.

Buffalo_2_010626.png

Let’s glance at the results from Big Cat Country (BCC), where fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars mill about. It’s been a pie-in-the-sky season for the Jags, and their fans are similarly content with the team. Entering Sunday’s playoff game, 95% of BCC voters are confident the team is headed in the right direction.

And to think they don’t even have Josh Allen or James Cook.

Jacksonville_1_010626.png

How confident is Duval County? Well… really confident, even if they struggle to fill their stadium. In predicting the outcome of Sunday’s playoff game, 82% of BCC voters believe the Jaguars will win — 48% leads the way with Jacksonville winning by 7+ points; 34% see the Jags winning by 1-6 points.

Jaguars fans aren’t giving the Bills much of a chance in the playoffs, despite their experience. Just 18% of BCC voters see Buffalo winning.

Jacksonville_2_010626.png

In national polls, voters have a slightly different outlook on Sunday’s playoff game between the Bills and Jaguars. Results have the Bills as favorites to win in Jacksonville — with 55% of votes picking Buffalo, and just 45% of votes going to the Jaguars.

National_4_010626.png

There’s one more poll with results that may interest readers of Buffalo Rumblings. It’s never wise to look ahead during the playoffs, but that’s exactly what fans of the Denver Broncos must do while on their playoff bye. When asked which potential divisional round opponent Broncos fans would see as toughest for their team, the Bills came out on top, with 49% of voters seeing Buffalo as the worst matchup for Denver.
