Detroit Lions vs. Dallas Cowboys Week 14 ‘TNF’ fan discussion

gettyimages-2250042598.jpg

Week 14 of NFL action gets underway tonight with a great NFC matchup between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. Yes, it’s irksome to see the Cowboys be given a primetime game almost every week, but here we are — living in Jerry’s World. Interesting as it may be, tonight’s Thursday Night Football game sees two Thanksgiving mainstays doing battle. That’s allowed both teams to escape the dreaded short week found in playing primetime games on Thursday — at least for this week.

So yes, while we’ve really seen a lot of Jerry’s Cowboys in the past month — broadcast ratings tell us any complaint about it is moot. Now that they’re playing winning football and quarterback Dak Prescott has found magic with wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, we’re sure to see more of this here Dallas football team in the years to come.

In terms of Week 14 rooting interests for the Buffalo Bills, there’s nothing to be found. What there is, however, is another spotlight occasion to root on the Lions while rooting against the Cowboys. At 7-5, Detroit is in a fight now to make the postseason, while a 6-5-1 Dallas team is seen as surging thanks to better opportunities within their division.

Some good news for Detroit is that wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown will play this evening. To keep up with all the news surrounding the Lions and Cowboys, head to Pride Of Detroit and Blogging The Boys.

Here’s your open thread to kick off Week 14 of NFL football. As always, be kind to one another — and in all things… Go Bills!

Buffalo Bills playoff odds & Week 14 NFL power rankings

The one where James Cook III ran away with the football

The Buffalo Bills survived a potential letdown in Week 13, laying waste to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second half of last Sunday’s game. It might just be that it took a bit longer than usual for the tryptophan to wear off for the Bills. That, or someone finally woke up offensive coordinator Joe Brady to remind him about the very special talent lining up with quarterback Josh Allen in the offensive backfield.

Running back James Cook III is a bona fide stud, and he should be an NFL MVP candidate — though his chances of that are null and void after running back Saquon Barkley failed to claim the title over Allen in 2024. Still, in 2025 Buffalo tends to go as James Cook goes.

It’s not that Allen has fallen off a cliff, but he has had to hunt too often for reliable pass catchers. That can only be sustainable for so long before something detrimental enters the frame. At least the Bills have the NFL’s best rushing attack to “lean on” in moments where the passing attack fails to matriculate the ball down the field.

These Bills are a bit of a time capsule on offense, more similar to those teams that dominated in the 1970s than the ones that lay waste to passing records in the 2020s. That’s okay, because it’s clear that even when a team knows Buffalo’s going to run (and to do so using the same play over and over again), they very well may struggle to stop it.

How do the Bills make a triumphant run toward the playoffs? By letting Cook lead the way, and allowing Allen to leverage his magic when the moment dictates. The New England Patriots are a problem, but everyone dismissing Buffalo’s chances in the postseason at this point in time may eventually ask for a side of salt with their shoe.

What does any of this mean for the glamorous world of NFL power rankings — and how does it impact the Bills’ standing in those eyes of the beholder? Let’s dive in to the latest batch, those rankings preceding Buffalo’s Week 14 home tilt against the Cincinnati Bengals.

To those of you new to Buffalo Rumblings’ power rankings roundup, I provide you, the reader, with a convenient one-stop shop to catch up with the Bills’ weekly rankings from a wide variety of outlets and writers covering the NFL. There’s no need to click away to find out more about what each analyst says, but the links are provided in case you want to dive deeper into rankings for other teams.

Before we get to the latest rankings, let’s catch up with the latest ESPN playoff odds for the Bills in four key metrics. A positive development here, Buffalo moves back up the ladder, now at three. People may have panned the Bills’ win against a seemingly hapless Steelers group, but the win was important to Buffalo’s postseason hunt.

Entering Week 14, Buffalo’s odds of making the playoffs now sit at 90% (was 79%); their odds of winning the division improved slightly to 15% (was 14%). As for earning a playoff bye, the Bills’ odds are back up to a still-unlikely 5% (was 3%), while Buffalo’s odds of making it to the Super Bowl are back up to 13% (was 9%). ESPN: 9 (up from 10 in Week 13)

X factor for final stretch: Running back James Cook III”

“The Bills’ rushing attack — fueled by Cook and his offensive line and coached by Aaron Kromer — has been a vital piece of the team’s success. To secure a spot in the postseason, the Bills need production on the ground when their inconsistent passing game falls short. All four of the Bills’ losses have come when Cook rushes for fewer than 100 yards.” — Alaina Getzenberg

NFL.com: 9 (up from 10 in Week 13)

“If you look at what Buffalo did offensively without its two starting offensive tackles, that was a pretty strong effort in Pittsburgh, all things considered. The Bills’ pass game hasn’t really been pretty this season, outside of some occasional Josh Allen magic and a few big YAC plays. So, for Buffalo to run the ball for 249 yards and control the clock for 42 minutes — out-Steelering the Steelers in their stadium — it was a character victory on offense. Eight runs of 10-plus yards and 16 rushing first downs. Defensively, it was even more impressive, arguably the Bills’ best performance of the season. The game turned at the start of the third quarter on Joey Bosa’s strip sack, which was run back for a touchdown by Christian Benford, who added a pick on the next series. Winning games without Allen going nuclear isn’t always a bad thing, folks. The Bills have their foot in the playoff door, occupying the final wild-card spot, and the division isn’t lost yet. We’ll see you in Foxborough in two weeks.” — Eric Edholm

Pro Football Focus: 4 (up from 6 in Week 13)

Chance of making playoffs: 94%
Chance of winning Super Bowl: 9%

“It took a while for the Bills to get going — they only scored three points in the first half — but once they got there, they didn’t let up in a 26-7 Week 13 win against the Steelers. The offense leaned on a huge performance from James Cook (80.3 grade; 10th) — who ran the ball 32 times for 144 yards — to carry the offense while the passing game felt stuck in the mud.

And the defense, which has been oft-maligned in recent weeks, shut down the Steelers’ offense and came up with a defensive touchdown on an Joey Bosa (79.2 grade; 21st) strip-sack. Better for the Bills.” — Thomas Valentine

The Athletic: 7 (up from 9 in Week 13)

Best-case scenario: The defense is turning things around”

“It hasn’t been a great year for that side of the ball in Buffalo, but the defense was dominant against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Sure, maybe that says more about the Steelers offense than the Bills defense, but if the Buffalo D can play even average football the rest of the way, this will be a dangerous team come the postseason.” — Chad Graff/Josh Kendall

CBS Sports: 12 (down from 9 in Week 13)

“They ran it right down the throats of the Steelers defenders to win Sunday. That, plus the improved run defense, are reasons for hope down the stretch.” — Pete Prisco

USA Today: 7 (up from 12 in Week 13)

“The league’s No. 1 rushing attack is fresh off producing a season-high 249 yards − which are also the most gained at Pittsburgh in half a century.” — Nate Davis

Bleacher Report: 7 (up from 8 in Week 13)

“The Bills were missing both of their starting offensive tackles, Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown, Sunday because of injuries. Ten days earlier, the team surrendered a career-high eight sacks on Josh Allen. The Steelers’ T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith were poised to light up Allen, right?

Wrong. Buffalo’s offensive line responded. Allen wasn’t sacked once. In fact, he was barely touched. The group opened the way for another big day from running back James Cook, who accumulated 144 rushing yards on 32 carries. The Bills dominated at the point of attack and made the Steelers look soft in Pittsburgh. ” — Brent Sobleski

Sportsnaut: 9 (up from 12 in Week 13)

“Sunday’s victory in Pittsburgh might not have erased the concerns many have for the Buffalo Bills’ passing game, but all that matters right now is the win. By moving to 8-4 on Sunday, the Bills keep themselves in a favorable position for a playoff spot ahead of a critical two-game stretch versus the Bengals and Patriots. For the time being, Buffalo gets to control its destiny.” — Matt Johnson

The Sporting News: 7 (up from 9 in Week 13)

“The Bills ran all over the Steelers to establish their dominant strength of the season and had to be inspired by all the big plays its defense was able to make when not gashed by the run.” — Vinnie Iyer

Yahoo! Sports: 8 (up from 11 in Week 13)

“It’s hard to tell if Sunday’s result in Pittsburgh was due to the incompetence of the Steelers’ offense or a resurgence from Buffalo’s defense. The Steelers had 166 yards and got only 10 first downs. Buffalo was allowing 317.1 yards per game before Sunday. The Bills are getting healthier on defense, and if Sunday was a sign of a big improvement, Buffalo can still be a factor this postseason. They still have a lot to prove though.” — Frank Schwab

NFL Spin Zone: 9 (up from 10 in Week 13)

“The Bills got a much-needed win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, but I don’t think anyone’s declaring them officially “back” after that one.

Beating up an injured Aaron Rodgers isn’t going to be the moment this team looks back on at the end of the season as a turning point or anything, but winning against the Steelers this week absolutely had to be done, because the Bills have fallen way behind the New England Patriots in the race for the AFC East.

Their loss on Thursday night against Houston in Week 12 was brutal, and really exposed a lot of issues with the team overall. I think a couple of things can be true about the Bills right now. Of course they are a legitimate and viable threat in the AFC. You can’t count them out with the big games Josh Allen has been in and how he plays when he has to put on the Superman cape.

But also, this Bills team is not nearly as good as others they’ve had in their recent window.” — Sayre Bedinger

New York Post: 7 (up from 10 in Week 13)

“Josh Allen set the career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (76) and the Bills had the most rushing yards by an opponent in Pittsburgh in 50 years during a 26-7 victory against the Steelers. James Cook’s 144 yards set the pace for a 249 on the ground. Christian Benford had two takeaways and scored a touchdown in a 90-second span to start the second half.

With their 26-7 victory, the Bills are now 8-4 for the season. They’re still slightly behind the Patriots in the race atop the AFC East, but they’re in a favorable position for a playoff spot. With that roster’s talent, they should be a serious threat to win the conference at this pace.” — Ryan Dunleavy

Pro Football Network: 6 (up from 8 in Week 13)

“Things looked ugly for the Buffalo Bills in the first half against the Steelers, scoring only three points before halftime. Though they went into halftime down by four, they pulled away quickly with their second-half performance, outscoring Pittsburgh 23-0 in the final two quarters of the game.” — Jacob Infante

theScore: 11 (no change from Week 13)

“The Bills making easy work of the Steelers despite a beat-up offensive line is a promising sign. I need to see a lot more from the passing game before they climb back up this list, though. Josh Allen’s 1.7 air yards per attempt against Pittsburgh is the lowest mark of any quarterback in a game this season.” — Dan Wilkins

Sports Illustrated: 4 (up from 7 in Week 13)

“If we were to take our own expectations out of the fold, we would be overwhelmingly praising an offense and a coordinator for logging a venue-record number of rushing yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers without their two starting tackles. I think with this iteration of the Bills, we have to stop hoping it looks like something and appreciating that each game is kind of its own survival effort.” — Conor Orr

FOX Sports: 10 (up from 11 in Week 13)

“Josh Allen may not look like an MVP anymore, but RB James Cook sure does. And if their defense can play like they did against the Steelers, maybe they’ve got something there.” — Ralph Vacchiano

Tom Brady with FOX Sports: 7 (unranked in Week 13)

Buffalo Bills place CB Darius Slay Jr. on Reserve/did not report list

gettyimages-1815894301.jpg

The Buffalo Bills’ relationship with cornerback Darius Slay Jr. was over before it began. After successfully claiming Slay on waivers earlier this week following his release by the Pittsburgh Steelers, only for the veteran cornerback to rebuff One Bills Drive by refusing to report, Buffalo has now placed Slay on the Reserve/did not report list.

The move allows the Bills to retain Slay’s rights, and he doesn’t count toward Buffalo’s 53-man active roster. By initially claiming Slay, he was set to count as part of their active roster. To make room for him, the Bills had to release someone in-house, which ended up exposing cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram to waivers. Ingram was subsequently claimed by the Houston Texans after they placed former Bills defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. on Injured Reserve.

It became clear almost immediately that Slay was looking to return to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played in two Super Bowls, winning one as part of the 2024 roster. The Eagles had also placed a claim, but the Bills were ahead of Philadelphia in the processing order.

Slay instead decided it was Philly or bust, and claimed he wasn’t certain about his playing future after learning he was Buffalo bound. Now, Slay will forfeit $350,000 in salary that was due to him over the course of the final five weeks of the 2025 regular season. If Slay wants to play football again this season, it’s going to be with the Bills. He can’t be picked up by another team until free agency opens for the 2026 NFL season.

There’s also another potentially interesting development here for the Bills (as pointed out by Mike Florio with NBC Sports), which could see them trying to recover a portion of the $8.745 million signing bonus the Pittsburgh Steelers paid out to Slay as part of the terms on his one-year $10 million deal in the Steel City. The Steelers took on $8.5 million of Slay’s salary in the form of a bonus upon his release.

In a corresponding move, the Bills claimed safety Darnell Savage on Friday, December 5 after the Washington Commanders released him.

Buffalo Bills claim safety Darnell Savage Jr.

gettyimages-2241310322.jpg

The Buffalo Bills made and were awarded another waiver claim on Friday, adding veteran safety Darnell Savage Jr. to the 53-man roster. Savage Jr. will fill the roster spot vacated by cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram, who was waived to accommodate a successful waiver claim for veteran cornerback Darius Slay Jr. When Slay Jr. failed to report to Buffalo, the Bills placed him on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, thereby opening a spot on the active roster.

The Bills officially placed CB Darius Slay on the reserve/did not report list, which opens up a roster spot. With that open spot, the Bills were awarded S Darnell Savage after a successful waiver claim.

Savage had most recently been with Washington.

The Bills retain Slay’s…

— Joe Buscaglia (@JoeBuscaglia) December 5, 2025

Savage Jr., 28, is a former first-round draft pick, as he was the twenty-first overall selection by the Green Bay Packers in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Packers, logging 302 tackles, nine interceptions, 32 pass breakups, nine tackles for loss, and one sack across 72 games with the club. He signed a three-year free agent deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March of 2024, but he only played 15 games in Duval County before he was released by the team this past September. He totaled 52 tackles, one interception, and 7 pass breakups as a member of the Jaguars.

Savage Jr. signed with the Washington Commanders on September 22, just six days after his release from Jacksonville. He played in eight games with Washington this season, starting two. He totaled 15 tackles, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble with Washington. He asked for and was granted his release by the club on December 4.

Savage Jr. is a phenomenal athlete, as he ran a 4.36-second forty-yard dash at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. He also displayed a 39.5” vertical leap and a 10’6” broad jump. At worst, Savage is a fantastic addition to Buffalo’s special teams group. At best, he’s quality depth at a position where the team has already lost a starter, Taylor Rapp, and another veteran reserve in Damar Hamlin.

Savage Jr. joins Buffalo’s current safeties: Cole Bishop, Jordan Poyer, Cam Lewis, and Jordan Hancock.

Gabe Davis, A.J. Epenesa of Buffalo Bills fined following Week 13 game

gettyimages-2249560878.jpg

The Buffalo Bills’ Week 13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers carried a bit of a cost for a pair of players at One Bills Drive. The NFL has handed out fines to wide receiver Gabe Davis and defensive end A.J. Epenesa, per a report shared by Bills reporter Sal Capaccio.

Davis received a $6,500 fine for unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet), following a play during the second quarter of action in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Epenesa was handed an $11,593 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting) in the third quarter — a play in which he also received a penalty for knocking the football out of wide receiver DK Metcalf’s hands after a completion.

Two notable situations that didn’t merit penalties, also failed to see players fined in the aftermath. The most notable omission being what was arguably a late hit on quarterback Josh Allen by linebacker Patrick Queen in the first half. It was a hit that bothered lots of viewers, but the officials and NFL front office saw no reason to penalize.

The other reported situation that received a lot of press was the idea that Allen supposedly kneed defensive tackle Cam Heyward in the abdomen. Heyward took exception to this, and laid it out as the root cause for his continued jawing at Allen. In the end, no penalty was levied, and no fine was handed out to Buffalo’s quarterback after film of the game was reviewed in full by the league offices.

Cam Heyward wasn’t left off the docket this past week, however. Reportedly, he received an $11,593 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting) in the aftermath of a touchdown by the Bills.

Bills WR Gabe Davis was fined $6,500 for Unnecessary roughness/use of the hemet last week against the Steelers.

Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week 14 news, game coverage

gettyimages-1777434850.jpg

The Buffalo Bills are finally back home in Highmark Stadium, their first home game since hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 16. It’s safe to say Buffalo’s excited to be back home, and to welcome the Cincinnati Bengals yet again, snow has arrived.

The last time these two teams met in Orchard Park, NY for a snow game, things did not go the Bills’ way. Unlike that day, this isn’t a win-or-go-home matchup. But a loss would have major implications for Buffalo’s playoff hopes. You can bet that head coach Sean McDermott has drilled that concept home, and that each game should be viewed as a one-game season from this point on.

Quarterback Josh Allen and the offense get a few familiar faces back in the huddle including left tackle Dion Dawkins and tight end Dalton Kincaid. Right tackle Spencer Brown and wide receiver Joshua Palmer remain sidelined for Week 14.

The defense will have its hands full trying to contain the likes of quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. That’s especially true with linebacker Terrel Bernard, and defensive end Joey Bosa out.

To keep up with all of Buffalo Rumblings’ coverage of Bills-Bengals, we’ve put together this post to serve as your guidebook during the game, and in the hours and days following Buffalo’s Week 14 home game.

AFC Playoff Picture: Buffalo Bills move up with Week 14 win

gettyimages-2250588008.jpg

The Buffalo Bills have finally moved up in the AFC playoff picture after their win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The win coupled with the loss by the Indianapolis Colts moves the Bills from seventh to fifth. The Los Angeles Chargers play on Monday night, and a win by them would move the Chargers into fifth and the Bills back to sixth.

The Colts also suffered a major injury on Sunday with quarterback Daniel Jones out with a torn Achilles. If that’s the case, the back end of the AFC Playoff Picture is even more wide open.

Elsewhere in the playoff picture, the Denver Broncos won on Sunday to pass the idle Patriots into first place. The Jacksonville Jaguars won to stay third. The Ravens and Steelers changed places with Pittsburgh moving into fourth place with their win and the Ravens dropping out of the playoff picture with their loss.

A very large game in the playoff picture takes place on Sunday night as the Kanas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans. A seventh loss by the Chiefs would be very tough to overcome for KC.

AFC standings during Week 14

The New England Patriots are on a bye in Week 14

1. Denver Broncos (11-2, 7-2 AFC)
2. New England Patriots (11-2, 6-2 AFC)

15. e-Las Vegas Raiders (2-11)
16. e-Tennessee Titans (2-11)

The Tennessee Titans were eliminated from playoff contention as were the Las Vegas Raiders. The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns joined them in Week 14.

AFC East standings after Week 14

The New England Patriots are on a bye this week and if they beat the Bills in Week 15, they win the AFC East. Another division crown is almost out of reach for the Bills and they will need a lot of help.

1. New England Patriots (11-2)
2. Buffalo Bills (9-4)
3. Miami Dolphins (6-7)
4. New York Jets (3-10)

The Jets and Dolphins were previously eliminated from the AFC East race.

Bills news: What stood out from Buffalo’s win vs. Cincinnati Bengals?

gettyimages-2250604002.jpg

The Buffalo Bills looked dead in the water, trailing Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals 24-18 halfway through the fourth quarter on a snowy Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. The Bills seemed poised to suffer another demoralizing loss, seal their fate as runners-up in the AFC East and potentially fall out of the playoff picture with four weeks remaining in the regular season.

But then Josh Allen scampered 40 yards through the snow for a pivotal touchdown, Christian Benford picked off Burrow and scored the go-ahead TD and A.J. Epenesa corralled a tipped pass for another INT as the Bills seized momentum and rallied for an improbable 39-34 victory.

Today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off with observations and analysis from terrific win over Cincinnati.

gettyimages-2250604002.jpg

Thoughts on Bills win over Bengals

Joe Burrow and the Bengals looked unstoppable for three quarters on Sunday. The Bills defense couldn’t get off the field on third down all day, allowing the Bengals to convert their first six third-down attempts while finishing 10-of-12 on third downs. When Cincinnati scored another TD to take a 28-18 lead, the Bills were in serious trouble. Until Superman Josh Allen and a resilient defense stepped up to deliver a thrilling win.

Following Allen’s 40-yard TD run, Benford anticipated Burrow’s pass, snagged the pass out of the air and ran it back for a momentum-swinging pick-six. On the very next pass attempt, Jordan Phillips got his hands on a Burrow pass and Epenesa intercepted it, setting the stage for a three-yard TD toss to Jackson Hawes and a 39-28 Bills lead. Cincinnati made it interesting, with Burrow connecting with Tee Higgins for a touchdown that pulled the Bengals within 39-34, but Allen sealed the improbable win by scrambling 17 yards on a third-and-15 to finish off Cincinnati.

Linked below: For the second straight week, Benford changed the tone of the game by scoring a touchdown, becoming the first player in franchise history to score a touchdown in consecutive games. Also how Josh Allen played brilliant, turnover-free football and showed how he is capable of carrying the team on his back; how Dawson Knox and Buffalo’s tight ends played a critical role in sparking the offense; how a resilient Bills team refused to let the Bengals beat them at home and scored 21 points in 4:30 of the fourth quarter; how head coach Sean McDermott’s aggressive play-calling on fourth down resulted in a pair of TDs and another that led to a TD; how Buffalo’s defense shook off a poor first three quarters and delivered key plays in the clutch; and more!

Christian Benford huge in Buffalo Bills’ Week 14 win probability swing

gettyimages-2250584560.jpg

The Buffalo Bills’ Week 14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals wasn’t without drama, After getting off to a slow start and falling into a 28-18 hole early in the fourth quarter, it meant that quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills would have to find the same sort of magic required of their Week 1 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

In scoring 21 unanswered points with under nine minutes to play in regulation, Buffalo once again showed an AFC North foe that their brand of toughness and fortitude wasn’t exclusive. After Allen scored on a 40-yard scramble to pull the Bills to within 3 and trailing 28-25, Buffalo still needed to find quite a bit of luck to stop quarterback Joe Burrow and a passing attack capable of scoring at will.

Enter cornerback Christian Benford, who had already played a masterful game in pass defense while covering wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Benford had completely shut down Chase, allowing him to see just two targets, zero catches, and one massive pick-six in 16 snaps. For as compelling a story line as that is, it proved to be just the beginning of Benford’s unforgettable day.

Benford’s 63-yard pick-six that played perhaps the most pivotal role for the Bills against the Bengals in terms of win probability. Per NextGenStats, as shared below by Henry McKenna, Buffalo’s win probability experienced a near-complete flip from 16.2% before Benford’s pick-six touchdown, to 77.0% following the score.

That play now stands as the single biggest win probability swing (+60.8 percentage points) on a play outside of the last two minutes in the NGS era (since 2016), per NextGenStats.

Following Benford’s game-changing play against Burrow and the Bengals, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips caused a second-consecutive turnover of Cincinnati’s quarterback in as many plays. By getting his hands up to block Burrow’s throwing lane, Phillips deflected the football that eventually wound up in the hands of Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa. Having now given the ball back to Allen and the offense two plays in a row allowed Buffalo to build a lead the likes of which Cincinnati could not erase.

#Bills CB Christian Benford had one hell of a game:

🔒 Against Ja'Marr Chase, Benford allowed 0 catches and 2 targets in 16 matchups.

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots NFL Week 15 odds, spread, betting info

gettyimages-2239979040.jpg

The Buffalo Bills took down quarterback Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14, and now turn their attention to perhaps the most important regular-season game of their season in Week 15. Up next is an AFC East rematch with the now-mighty New England Patriots. It’s a game that carries a lot of playoff implications, even if New England still holds a two-game lead over Buffalo.

The Patriots already have a win over Buffalo, whom they defeated 23-20 at Highmark Stadium back in Week 5. With a win, New England will re-claim the AFC East crown, stealing it back from its resting place in Orchard Park, NY the last five seasons. After starting the season 1-2, New England hasn’t lost in months (10 straight games), yet right now the odds find favor with quarterback Josh Allen and the 9-4 Bills more than the 11-2 Patriots.

Odds for Bills at Patriots in NFL Week 15

Entering Week 15, FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Bills as 1.5-point (-1.5) road favorites over the Patriots, with an over/under set at O/U 49.5.

Screenshot-2025-12-07-at-19-33-48-NFL-Odds-Betting-Lines-and-Point-Spreads-FanDuel-Sportsbook.png

The moneyline continues to change since opening at -116 for the Bills and -102 for the Patriots. As of publishing, the current moneyline was at Bills -122 | Patriots +104.

Screenshot-2025-12-08-at-16-27-42-NFL-Odds-Betting-Lines-and-Point-Spreads-FanDuel-Sportsbook.png

There’s a lot of swagger in New England these days, as head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have returned to the Patriot fold and have fans believing in a renewed dynasty behind the arm and legs of second-year quarterback Drake Maye. But there’s more to New England’s success than those three, where a stout defense and overall improved roster have allowed the Patriots to feast on a last-place schedule based on the team’s AFC East finish in 2024.

Despite that, a team going 11-2 after two seasons of 4-12 is nothing short of impressive, and they’ve already shown capable of defeating Josh Allen and the Bills. Yet the one thing that they don’t have is a roster loaded with playoff experience — which often serves as a benefit at this point in the regular season. Will that prove true in Week 15?

It certainly didn’t matter in Week 5, when New England handed Buffalo its first loss of the season — and in a game where the Bills debuted their NFL|Nike Rivals uniforms, too. In that game, Josh Allen finished 22-of-31 for 253 yards and two touchdowns, while adding nine rushes for 53 yards. Drake Maye went 22-of-30 for 273 yards, with three carries for 12 yards. Buffalo was unable to corral former Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who finished with 10 receptions on 12 targets for 146 yards. Running back James Cook III was also held in check by New England’s stingy run defense, finishing with just 49 yards on 15 carries. Ultimately, a pair of costly fumbles by wide receiver Keon Coleman and Josh Allen proved too much to overcome as Buffalo lost by a field goal.

The Bills and Patriots face off at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA at 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, December 14.

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots a high-stakes AFC East rematch in Week 15

gettyimages-2239978058.jpg

You can expect a playoff-like atmosphere in Foxborough, MA this Sunday. There’s a lot at stake for both the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots weeks before the playoffs begin. After back-to-back 4-13 seasons, the Patriots have turned things around under hard-nosed head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel.

Now 11-2 and in first place within the AFC East, New England welcomes their Buffalo rivals to Gillette Stadium for a pivotal game that could decide the division winner. With a win against the Bills on Sunday, the Patriots will officially retake the division, being crowned 2025 AFC East Champions.

Quarterback Josh Allen and One Bills Drive should be extra motivated this week, interested in spoiling the planned “hat and t-shirt” party at their expense, but a win won’t come easy. Games between Buffalo and New England haven’t been this competitive in decades, and second-year quarterback Drake Maye, an NFL MVP front-runner, is a key reason the Patriots are once again the talk of the league.

To be certain, there’s nothing team owner Robert Kraft and everyone inside the Patriots’ organization would love more than to re-claim the AFC East from Buffalo, where the title has remained the last five NFL seasons. New England is in prime playoff position, currently the AFC’s two seed and with an identical record to the one-seed Denver Broncos. The Patriots haven’t lost since Week 3, and are riding a 10-game winning streak.

When Buffalo and New England met in Week 5, the Bills failed to contain Maye and former Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs outside the red zone. Though neither player finished with a touchdown of any type, Maye went 22-0f-30 for 273 yards while Diggs caught 10 passes on 12 targets for 146 yards to keep the chains moving.

It’s been an impressive two-week stretch for Bills cornerback Christian Benford, who has returned turnovers for a touchdown against both the Pittsburgh Steelers (fumble-return TD) and Cincinnati Bengals (pick-six). Buffalo could look to have Benford follow Diggs around next Sunday in hopes of slowing down what hurt the defense in Week 5.

Interestingly, the Bills opened as slight road favorites over the Patriots — perhaps a nod to people seeing Buffalo as battle-tested in these situations. There’s no doubt head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane hope to avoid watching Diggs put on a division champions hat and shirt in a different shade of red, white, and blue.

Keon Coleman benched: Buffalo Bills receiver has spoken to Andre Reed about ‘being a pro’

gettyimages-2247377597.jpg

Earlier this season, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman was benched for two games for being late to a team meeting. It was at least the third publicly documented time Coleman was disciplined by the organization for off-field problems.

Since then, his teammates have rallied around him while also giving very direct and specific guidance to the 22-year-old second-year player.

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed also spoke with Coleman. The pair talked for nearly two hours on the phone, with Reed sharing what it takes to make it as a professional football player.

“I didn’t berate him or say ‘you did this’ or ‘you did that’. I mean, he’s a young kid. I was 21 at one time,” said Reed via video chat this week. “I came into the league and I had to learn how to be a pro. Basically that’s the whole thing in one sentence: You gotta learn how to be a pro.”

It’s unclear whether or not Coleman fully received the message and internalized the changes he needs to make. While Reed says he thinks the conversation made sense to the young receiver, Coleman also brought up things he can’t control as part of the reason he hasn’t being successful.

“He was like ‘I got you’ and talking about what’s going on in the building as far as play calling and not enough targets and all that. I go, ‘you know every team has that. Believe it or not.’”

It’s that type of dismissive behavior that drew some pushback after the first game he missed due to the benching. He was dancing on the sideline before the November 16th game and while he did stand up and answer questions after the game, his answers weren’t entirely self-critical.

“Just got to be better,” said Coleman when talking to reporters in the tunnel after the game. “Better on my end… Mistakes happen. Things happen.”

Thad Brown from WROC in Rochester asked Coleman if there is a lesson he hasn’t learned at this point or a message that isn’t being received.

“Nah, I wouldn’t say that,” responded Coleman.

How the Buffalo Bills have mentored Keon Coleman should be questioned

When the Buffalo Bills drafted Josh Allen, they surrounded him with coaches and older players that had a ton of NFL experience. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey, quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Derek Anderson and later Davis Webb, Mitchell Trubisky, and Case Keenum. Not only did Allen seek outside counsel on his own during the offseason, there was a structure in place inside the building to help him.

It’s hard to say the Bills have done that Coleman, at least with the other players in the room. Wide receivers coach Adam Henry has a ton of experience coaching in the league.

Buffalo went into Coleman’s rookie season with journeymen Mack Hollins and Marquez Valdes-Scantling as the elder statesmen in the receiver room. Curtis Samuel at 28 was the closest thing to a successful veteran presence in the room and was a top-40 pick like Coleman. Eventually, Amari Cooper was added to the mix at the trade deadline, but he’s known more as being a soft-spoken member of a team, not a vocal leader.

In 2025, the Bills brought back veteran Gabe Davis but only in September after the entire offseason. They added Brandin Cooks in November. Outside of Samuel, every other player in the room was 26 or younger during the entire offseason and training camp.

After Coleman’s suspension, it wasn’t a receiver who talked to the media about taking Coleman under his wing to mentor, it was left tackle Dion Dawkins. That’s great, but Dawkins isn’t with Coleman nearly as much as someone in the room would be.

Not having a player in the room led to the call with Reed, as well.

“That’s what I’m here for. Somebody mentored me. If I have to ask questions and I need somebody who’s been there and done that, I’m going to call somebody who’s been there and done that,” said Reed. “Keon came out from Florida State highly touted, there’s a stigma. I came from a small school as a fourth-round pick and nobody heard of me, so I didn’t have that on my back, but still it doesn’t matter. There’s still an expectation for you when you come in a building every single day to be that professional that they want you to be and if you can’t do that then it doesn’t matter what school you go to, you’re not going to be there. So it was a very, very good talk I had with him and I hope it made it made some sense to him and I think it did.”

When Reed joined the Bills, they were in the middle of consecutive 2-14 seasons, so he got to play right away despite being a mid-round pick. But he also had a great mentor to lean on and learn from.

“Jerry Butler was the man when I got there in ‘85. Coming from a D2 school back then, it was very unknown for a D2 guy to be starting on an NFL roster and I ended up starting and punt returning, too. Maybe it was because of the team dynamic and the players so I had more of a chance to show if I was able to play at this level, and Jerry Butler was always there for me to tell me how to be a pro out at practice, how to stay in your playbook, how to do all this stuff and I had to do more because I came from a small school.”

Reed was lucky to have Butler, as the veteran missed half the 1983 season and the entire 1984 season with a knee injury. The pair played together in 1985 and into the 1986 season before Butler shattered his ankle on a touchdown pass from Jim Kelly. He took his last NFL snap at age 29.

Big changes could be coming for Buffalo Bills wide receiver room this offseason

No Buffalo Bills receiver is on pace for more than 760 receiving yards in 2025, and Reed thinks that means big changes are coming this offseason led by general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott.

“You know obviously they don’t have a Ja’Marcus Chase, they don’t have a Justin Jefferson, or a Puka [Nacua], or a ‘number one’ guy that when you see him on film you go ‘Yep we can’t let that guy beat us. We’ll take our chances with everybody else.‘ Obviously probably in the offseason that will be the first issue that they have is we need a playmaker on the outside who’s consistent enough to change the dynamic of a game. All the good teams to a certain point have that guy.”

Coleman’s lack of growth both on and the off the field probably accelerates that timeline, too.

The Bills aren’t afraid to move on from top picks. They traded first-round pick Kair Elam after three disappointing seasons with the team. They traded second-rounder Boogie Basham after his first two seasons and third-round pick Zack Moss at the trade deadline inside his third season.

Andre Reed spoke with us at Buffalo Rumblings as part of the promotion around a special release by Bud Light this December. “Blizzard Brew” is made with real snow from Highmark Stadium as the team closes that historic building. Check out the link for more information.

Buffalo Bills fan survey: Week 15

gettyimages-2251040602.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Bills fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

At 9-4, the Buffalo Bills march into a Week 15 road matchup against the AFC East-leading 11-2 New England Patriots. It’s as important a game as they come outside the regular season — the proverbial “hat and t-shirt” event should the Patriots win to re-claim the division crown over their Western New York Rivals.

If you were to reverse time, stepping back a few months to those preseason record prognostications for the Bills, a 9-4 record at this point in the season likely sounds like something most of Bills Mafia signs up for in August. The trouble with that reality is that it’s still two games shy of New England. It’s a record that’s good enough to float among those teams fighting for wild card supremacy.

The question one should probably stop and ponder a bit is thus: Does their record matter, if they make the playoffs? Furthermore, does how they win matter, or just that Buffalo wins by any means necessary? If it’s the latter, then continued debates about the run defense and wide receivers who aren’t getting open downfield may not hold the amount weight given in 2025.

But they do hold that weight. Fans who go back long enough in time understand that time is not endless for this era of Bills football. That the future is anything other than guaranteed. So, a sense of urgency is masked in public complaint. Make no mistake that Buffalo is well-positioned for postseason play. They’re perennial playoff favorites, but also perennially eliminated by the Kansas City Chiefs. Oh, yes… KC might not make the postseason in 2025. Well, wouldn’t that be interesting?

Speaking of such things, those Patriots are all but guaranteed a playoff spot at this point, and could wind up with the one seed in the AFC, and a bye. That’s not ideal, but how much does it really matter to Buffalo’s playoff journey? The Bills do boast the best rushing attack in the NFL, and also the league’s best passing defense. There’s a lot of real estate an NFL franchise can cover playing well in both of those areas. Thankfully, there’s also Buffalo’s Winter Soldier — and Josh Allen has shown capable of carrying this team plenty already in 2025.

Where does that leave you at this moment in time? Are you confident in these Buffalo Bills, being led by this coaching staff, and the incumbent front office? Or do you need them to win the AFC East again to fully trust the process?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons Week 15 ‘TNF’ fan discussion

gettyimages-2251466434.jpg

Week 15 of NFL action begins tonight, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosting the Atlanta Falcons for an NFC South battle bathed in the lights of Thursday Night Football. At 7-6, the Buccaneers really need a win to keep their lead over the also 7-6 Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile the 4-9 Falcons have since turned things over to veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in the last month following a season-ending injury to quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Tonight’s game doesn’t carry the same glitz it appeared to hold early in the season, thanks mostly to Atlanta’s woes. That matters not, as every NFL game holds football fans’ interest, and you can never be sure when something dramatic might unfold.

What about Buffalo Bills rooting interests this evening? Nothing to be found, right? Buffalo did face both these teams already, having squared off with the AFC South in 2025. So if you’re looking for a reason to cheer on one side, go with the Buccaneers since a win by Tampa Bay improves the Bills’ Strength of Victory (SOV) score and tiebreaker.

Are you ready for some primetime football? Here’s your open thread for all of tonight’s action on TNF. As always, be kind to one another — and in all things… Go Bills!

Buffalo Bills CB Christian Benford add to Thursday’s injury report

gettyimages-2247963905.jpg

We knew a clean injury report was too good to be true. On the second day of practice ahead of their Week 15 showdown with the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills had a new injury to report.

Thursday injury report pic.twitter.com/X8yw1FkOLM

— Buffalo Bills PR (@BuffaloBillsPR) December 11, 2025

Christian Benford is now listed as limited with a toe injury. Maybe it’s a hangnail. Maybe it’s turf toe. Hopefully it’s not of the needs-surgery variety – aka Joe Burrow’s season-deterring injury. Benford, who has scored touchdowns, recorded two interceptions, and has a fumble recovery over the past 12 days, is critical to the Bills’ game plan on Sunday.

A limited designation after not being listed at the all day before always elicits a lot of questions. Did the player get injured from the facility? Was the player sore previously but passed it off as tolerable and didn’t say anything until now? Or the most common, and most worrisome, did the player start the day’s practice perfectly healthy and then experience an injury?

Benford’s participation status in practice tomorrow is going to be a big indicator of how serious the injury is, when it happened, and if he will be available to help contain former Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs on Sunday.

On a more positive note, defensive end Joey Bosa continued to practice and looked good pushing off despite having injured a hamstring in Week 13. The Bills’ posting Bosa’s practice video to their social media is a good indication that he’s trending upwards, and we could see him on the field in Foxborough, MA this week.

The same could be said of linebacker Terrel Bernard. He dislocated his elbow back in 12, and today is the first we’ve seen Bernard working with his teammates. While he has a hinged brace on his arm, that isn’t indicative of him not being ready to play. Linebacker Dorian Williams and safety Jordan Poyer have both played in those in recent seasons and it’s likely that we will see Bernard wearing it for the remainder of this year.

Terrel Bernard practicing. Has a pretty big brace on his right arm/elbow. pic.twitter.com/eAvM6flm7Z

— Sal Capaccio 🏈 (@SalSports) December 11, 2025

Wide receiver Joshua Palmer is still a big question mark. Not unexpectedly, he continues to be limited and, with not much video on his progress, it’s likely he will stay inactive for another week. The Bills have wide receivers Gabe Davis and Brandon Cooks, neither of whom were on the active roster the last time Palmer was in uniform, so there’s no need to rush him back back onto the field.

Right tackle Spencer Brown continues to be limited but has said he intends to play this week. Tight end Dawson Knox is back to practice after being excused from Wednesday’s walkthrough for personal reasons, while quarterback Mitch Trubisky stayed home with an illness on Thursday.

Buffalo Bills playoff odds & Week 15 NFL power rankings

gettyimages-2251470315.jpg

The one where Josh Allen broke more records while doing Josh Allen things.

It’s time once again for us to walk the aggregate path that is the Buffalo Rumblings’ NFL power rankings roundup. In getting this to you far later than preferred, I’ll dispense with a ton of the free jazz build-up and get down to business. I do love a good build in so much as it helps to more meaningfully engage you, our readers, with one another. But… time’s a wastin’!

It’s fair to say that Week 15 is going to be huge in terms of postgame narratives. Will those center around a Buffalo Bills team that proved again that winning in December is on the menu, and that January football is a given with Josh Allen at quarterback? Or will it instead be how the New England Patriots have usurped their AFC East foes, now set to put the AFC and eventually an NFC opponent on notice? We’ll have to wait and see what Sunday reveals, if any of that or otherwise.

For now, it’s clear that most NFL power rankings prognosticators see Buffalo as a team ascending at the right time, even if it took some miraculous plays to claim victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. In fairness, the Bills have played the Bengals and Baltimore Ravens when both were at near-peak health, so current records only hold so much weight.

Let’s get to it here, but note that we have nothing to share from Pro Football Network (PFN) or NFL Spin Zone this week. It’s uncertain what happened with PFN, and the latter of the two provided content. Yet, for NFL Spin Zone it’s a constantly swinging goal post where some weeks they rank conferences, others each division, and still other among those with identical records. It’s just a bit much, and lacks consistency that sports fans crave in digesting numbers and rankings.

After you take a few minutes reading what others have to say about the Bills and whey they were placed anywhere from between three and 10, sound off in the comments!

One last thing before we get to the latest rankings: As we like to do here, it’s best we catch up with the latest ESPN playoff odds for the Bills in four key metrics. Why ESPN? I like the chart, and unlike some other outlets it’s material that isn’t hidden behind a paywall. I really enjoy what The Athletic provides, but for many it’s inaccessible. I mean, I really do like their 2025 NFL Playoff Simulator. Here’s a capture of the Bills’ latest figures within The Athletic’s playoff simulator:

Screenshot-2025-12-12-at-21-43-58-2025-NFL-Playoff-Picture-Each-teams-path-to-the-postseason-The-Athletic.png

It lists the Bills with the sixth-best playoff odds in the path to the NFL playoffs. There’s also the graph below, which you may have seen elsewhere. It’s a great visual feast. I’m not here to sway your decision to pay The New York Times / The Athletic for access to this content — rather, hoping to share something with readers who otherwise might not see it. There’s far more than what I’ve shared here, of course.

Screenshot-2025-12-12-at-21-46-36-How-the-Buffalo-Bills-can-make-the-playoffs-through-Week-15-The-Athletic.png

Onward with the ESPN content… Continuing a trend from last week there are more positives developments. Buffalo actually moved down the latter to the four spot, where previously they were at three.

Entering Week 15, the Bills’ odds of making the playoffs now sit at 97% (was 90%); their odds of winning the division improved to 18% (was 15%). As for earning a playoff bye, Buffalo’s dipped to 4% (was 5%), while their odds of making it to the Super Bowl improved to 16% (was 13%). (ESPN’s latest and full AFC playoff odds chart)

Now, let’s live in the present and dive into the latest NFL power rankings, passing the mic to hierarchy experts around the country. Ready? (Week 14 Power Rankings for comparison)

ESPN: 6 (up from 9 in Week 14)

Most shocking statistical ranking: Defensive end Joey Bosa is first in forced fumbles”

“Much of what the Bills are doing statistically is to be expected, including offensive numbers that are down from last season’s difficult-to-replicate lack of turnovers or sacks. But there was some uncertainty as to what Bosa would be at this point in his career. The one-year signing has aged well overall, and the highs have included his five forced fumbles. Bosa’s most recent turnover came versus the Steelers in Week 13, leading to a Christian Benford touchdown. This is already his second-most forced fumbles in a single season (seven in 2021).” — Alaina Getzenberg

NFL.com: 6 (up from 9 in Week 14)

“Down 10 points late, with the snow really piling up, Josh Allen and an opportunistic Bills defense dominated the final eight minutes with an incredible flourish against the scrappy Bengals, keeping Buffalo’s faint divisional hopes alive. The Bills will need to beat the well-rested Patriots on Sunday in Foxborough — and do more than that — to even harbor those thoughts, but it’s possible. Yet, I think this team remains dangerous as a wild card, if that’s the way it goes. With the Bengals, Ravens and Chiefs all falling off, and even the upstart Colts falling on hard times, you simply cannot count out an Allen-led group in the playoffs. I’m not ignoring Buffalo’s defensive limitations, nor am I looking away from James Cook’s rising fumble total. But with Allen, the Bills nearly always have a chance.” — Eric Edholm

Pro Football Focus: 4 (no change from Week 14)

Chance of making playoffs: 98%
Chance of winning Super Bowl: 9%

“The Bills rallied from a 28-18 deficit midway through the fourth quarter to score 21 points and defeat the Cincinnati Bengals, thanks to a superhuman Josh Allen (85.8 grade; 5th) performance in Week 14. Allen completed 22-of-28 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns, adding nine carries for 78 yards and a touchdown — which resulted in a 90.4 overall PFF grade.

Buffalo needed its offense to spring to life in the fourth quarter — the defense struggled to contain the Bengals in the western New York snow, allowing six yards per play. However, corner Christian Benford (66.2 grade; 40th) scored a pick-six as the Bills picked off Joe Burrow on back-to-back plays. The Bills weren’t at their best, but they made the big plays at the right times.” — Thomas Valentine

The Athletic: 6 (up from 7 in Week 14)

Worst-case scenario: Moving out of this stadium”

“This is the Bills’ last season in Highmark Stadium. The new stadium will be palatial, but it’s never going to feel like Buffalo’s beautiful bandbox of a building. On Sunday, Bills quarterback Josh Allen became the first player in NFL history with at least one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown in 50 games. He had 235 total yards and three touchdowns in the second half of a snow game straight out of a Disney movie.” — Chad Graff/Josh Kendall

CBS Sports: 10 (up from 12 in Week 14)

“Josh Allen carried them past the Bengals in the snow, showing exactly how this team needs to play to win. It’s his time. Let him loose.” — Pete Prisco

USA Today: 7 (no change from Week 14)

“They’re holding steady at No. 7 − and QB Josh Allen, who might be the league’s best quarterback at this point and perhaps the most dangerous and experienced one on the AFC side of the playoff bracket, is looking like a man who could finally be on a fruitful Super Bowl mission.” — Nate Davis

Bleacher Report: 6 (up from 7 in Week 14)

“Despite questions about their pass-catching group, the Buffalo Bills are built to win scoring shootouts, and Josh Allen shines in big moments.

The Bills needed the MVP version of their star quarterback, and that’s who they saw throw for three touchdowns and rush for 78 yards and a score on nine carries in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Buffalo’s defense has allowed 30 or more points in three of the team’s previous five outings, which raises concerns for this club down the stretch, but Allen is the ultimate equalizer with his arm and legs.” — Maurice Moton

Sportsnaut: 7 (up from 9 in Week 14)

“Trailing by 10 points midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills were in real danger of dropping to 8-5 and that would mean having to fight for one of the last wild card spots. Josh Allen and Buffalo’s defense responded to that with some of their biggest plays of the season, including a pick-six and a career-long rushing touchdown by Allen. Now, Buffalo is in firm control of its playoff destiny and a win next week versus New England would re-open the door to a division title.” — Matt Johnson

The Sporting News: 6 (up from 7 in Week 14)

“The Bills needed Josh Allen to go nuts late to save the day against the Bengals, but it wouldn’t have been possible without their defense digging deeper to make big plays. Buffalo keeps looking more like the true AFC team to beat, but a New England rematch this week will provide proof for or against that thinking.” — Vinnie Iyer

Yahoo! Sports: 8 (no change from Week 14)

“We’re looking at the very real possibility of the AFC playoffs beginning without Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. Can Josh Allen and the Bills take advantage of that? They were on upset watch again for most of Sunday against the Bengals. Allen, who is up to 34 total touchdowns (22 passing, 12 rushing) this season, gives them a chance against anyone. It’s just hard to depend on everything else around him.” — Frank Schwab

New York Post: 7 (no change from Week 14)

“Christian Benford and A.J. Epenesa intercepted back-to-back fourth-quarter passes by Joe Burrow to spark a 10-point fourth-quarter comeback in a 39-34 win against the desperate Bengals. Benford returned his interception for the go-ahead 63-yard pick-six. Josh Allen threw for three touchdowns – including the knockout punch on fourth down to Jackson Hawes – and ran for another.” — Ryan Dunleavy

theScore: 9 (up from 11 in Week 14)

“Buffalo has been completely helpless when it comes to stopping the run, ranking 31st with -0.07 EPA/rush. That makes this the worst Bills rush defense since 2005. The good news? There may not be too many AFC playoff teams capable of exploiting their fatal flaw.” — Dan Wilkins

Sports Illustrated: 3 (up from 4 in Week 14)

“My takeaway from Sunday’s game is that, so long as the Bills have Josh Allen, the team can never play in a closed-roof stadium in Buffalo in the winter. Against a pocket passer—even one as good as Burrow—he is like riding a tank into a demolition derby.” — Conor Orr

FOX Sports: 10 (up from 11 in Week 13)

Look, Glenn Clark takes an offbeat approach to this exercise. If you’re looking for quick-hitting deep analysis, you’ll probably have to find someone from another generation. At least this week he shouts out Christian Benford’s Maryland hometown. Onward, we trudge…

Just watching this again now. Top tier Highmark Stadium moment and memory. Cincy was moving the ball to put that game away and Christian Benford said “no.” #BillsMafia

Scoring metrics revealing between Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots

gettyimages-2239475479.jpg

Before I get going with my thing, please make a detour to Buffalo Rumblings reader garsimeon’s post on The Feed for a very in depth breakdown on opponent adjusted metrics. Consider my article here the 101 level on the topic with gar’s the PhD version.

Bills vs Patriots: A Revolutionary Battle | Buffalo Rumblings

The New England Patriots have been on a roll, currently sitting two games ahead of the Buffalo Bills. What’s been the secret to the Patriots’ success this season? Most metrics have New England rated very highly. Critics suggest a weak schedule. Let’s take the most important metric there is (the score) and see how the Patriots have done adjusted for their opponent averages.

New England Patriots adjusted by opponent

As you might have expected, here’s a table of data.

Pats-adjusted.png

These are pretty straightforward so I’ll explain a little and then pick out some fun facts. The first three columns compare what the Patriots scored against each of their opponents, followed by the average score that opponent allows and then the difference. You want to be on the positive side of this metric — for example the 19.2 points above what the Carolina Panthers typically allow is much nicer than the -12.5 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The next three columns are the same deal, but in the other direction. Here, though, negative is good for the difference, as it’s the amount the Patriots’ defense held that opponent under their usual. Now let’s dissect a bit.

New England’s opponents allow 25.3 points per game, which is 2.2 more than the league average of 23.1 points per game allowed. This means that on average the defenses the Patriots have faced have been weaker than the mean. Despite that, the Patriots still are outperforming expectations by putting up 1.7 points more than what their opponents collectively allow.

It’s a similar story on defense. The same average of 23.1 points scored would apply for the league measure of offenses. The Patriots’ opponents are weak in this regard too, averaging 2.7 points less per game than the league average. But also like we saw on the other side of things, the Pats are nearly two points better than even this expectation.

In summary, both sides of the argument are correct. The Patriots have 100% faced a relatively weak field, but they’ve also played well even with that context. You know we’re not quite done yet.

The Buffalo Bills

Here’s the same table, but now it’s the Bills and their opponents.

Bills-adjusted.png

The Bills’ opponents have allowed 23.3 points per game — just 0.2 points per game worse than league average, or pretty much exactly average. In a full season, when you run these kinds of analytics, most teams’ opponent averages wind up around league average, so this is no surprise.

What is also not too terribly shocking for Josh Allen fans is that the Bills are scoring 5.6 points more than what would be expected based on their opponents’ adjust defenses. That’s a huge jump.

The other side is a mixed bag. Buffalo’s opponents score 22.0 points on average, or 1.1 points less than league average. That’s quite a bit closer to league average than the Patriots’ opponents, but still a bit on the weaker side of things. The Bills’ defense is allowing half a point more than what would be expected based on their opponents. That’s not a terrible defense by any stretch of the imagination, but the most optimistic argument is the Bills have an average defense.

The Final Straw

This is a very simplified version of adjusted metrics but, if you’re buying what they’re selling, it points to a Patriots team winning against a weak field. The Bills on the other hand are in general tearing apart average defenses and having a “meh” experience against a slightly weak slew of opposing offenses. While that paints a favorable picture of Buffalo, there’s one thing still hanging over our heads.

That two-game lead the Patriots have. There’s a phrase used a lot in football about “beating the teams you’re supposed to.” The Patriots are essentially doing that week in and week out. The Bills have stumbled a few times in that regard, and that’s the big difference.

Or as Elvis would put it, it’s all about TCB. The Bills have a shot to Take Care of Business this weekend and put on display what the metrics suggest. They need to avoid some volatility that’s sunk them, including against New England earlier in the year.

Buffalo Bills elevate Dane Jackson, Andre Jones Jr. from practice squad

imagn-27495166.jpg

The Buffalo Bills have elevated two defensive players from the practice squad, and both are veteran NFL players. The team announced on Saturday that defensive end Andre Jones Jr. and cornerback Dane Jackson have been elevated from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game at the New England Patriots.

— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) December 13, 2025

Jones, 27, was originally a seventh-round draft choice of the Washington Commanders in the 2023 NFL Draft. Over the last two seasons, he appeared in 16 games, making two starts while with Washington. He has five total tackles and three pass deflections on his career. This is the first elevation for Jones, who has been with Buffalo’s practice squad for most of the 2025 season. He joined the Bills in August after Washington released him.

Jackson, 29, was a seventh-round pick of the Bills in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has 178 tackles, 30 pass breakups, and three interceptions in 63 NFL games. Most of those games have come with the Bills, as he has been with Buffalo for all but one of his six professional seasons. He played in nine games with the Carolina Panthers last season before returning to Buffalo this offseason.

For Jackson, this is his third and final call-up from the practice squad this season. He has three total tackles, all of which came in Buffalo’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Jackson has played three snaps on defense and 23 snaps on special teams this year.

Buffalo has just three boundary cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, and one of them, Christian Benford, is dealing with a toe injury he suffered in practice on Thursday. Tre’Davious White and Maxwell Hairston are the other outside corners. The Bills also have just four defensive ends on the 53-man roster. Joey Bosa missed last week with a hamstring injury, and veteran Morgan Fox played 11 snaps in his place after receiving the practice squad elevation last weekend. A.J. Epenesa, Greg Rousseau, and Javon Solomon are the other defensive ends on the roster. This is the first elevation of the season for Jones.

Bosa and Benford are both listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Bills Mafia losing confidence in Buffalo ahead of Week 15 AFC East clash

gettyimages-2251864774.jpg

The results are in, Rumblers! We’re now 15 weeks into our season-long look at your confidence in the Buffalo Bills. From the start, it’s been about one thing: the postseason. While it’s still too early to find out how all that will go, the Bills are in the home stretch fighting to stay in the picture as a current wild card team.

Buffalo gets a shot at reclaiming some ground in the AFC East over the New England Patriots, but how do many of you feel about the Week 14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals while framing it as an appetizer for today’s clash in Gillette Stadium? Let’s take a look at the results from our latest Reacts survey.

Let’s just say you’re consistent… ly unsure about this team. Yes, it took another miraculous fourth quarter from the Bills to take down quarterback Joe Burrow and the Bengals and, yes, they’re two games back of New England in the AFC East race. It’s still safe to say this team has yet to hit its full stride, and the great news is that playoff season requires plenty of those strides. And luck. Lots of luck.

It’s pretty clear at this point that those who aren’t happy with the folks in charge at One Bills Drive will remain so until new folks are in charge of things. With that will come sweeping changes, which may not bring all things desired. But, it is the season of dreaming and a time for giving. So until doubt is fully removed from the equation, it’s likely these results continue this trend, even in victory. What trend?

Right now, just 26% of you gave a vote of confidence towards the direction of these Buffalo Bills. There’s a lot of work for general manager Brandon Beane, head coach Sean McDermott, defensive coordinator Bobby Babich, offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor.

Also, it would help if the wide receivers got their acts together, and then took it up several notches in the coming weeks.

Buffalo_1_121025.png

Okay, so what about those Patriots and their fans over at Pats Pulpit? Well, things are going better, as one might imagine. Much better, actually — where 95% of readers polled are confident New England is headed in the right direction.

NewEngland_1_121025.png

But wait, there’s more! Pats Pulpit asked about today’s outcome, and only 26% of those polled believe the Patriots lose today. Half of those who voted say New England wins, somewhere between 1 and 8 points, while 24% see the Pats winning by 8 or more points.

NewEngland_2_121025.png

It gets worse here, folks. Pulpit readers are really confident in quarterback Drake Maye and his supporting cast. The vast majority of their readers, 79%, believe Maye will win a Super Bowl before Josh Allen.

NewEngland_3_121025.png

Anyway…

National polls once again had readers pick the winners of Week 15, and there’s a clear trend:

Nationally, fans still believe in the Buffalo Bills. In terms of fan bases, Bills Mafia is precariously perched on the fence, while Patriots fans are currently bathing in the vintage light of the Tom Brady era.
